tw: brief mentions of miscarriage and suicide attempt
the dichotomy of the level of stakes in each episode of Downton Abbey will always be funny to me. Some episodes are like
“Thomas is on the brink of being fired for being gay”
“it’s the actual World War I”
“Sybil could very well die in childbirth”
“Bates has been arrested for a murder he didn’t commit”
“one of the staff caused a MISCARRIAGE of someone from Upstairs”
“Thomas has been found half dead in a self-inflicted bloody bathtub”
And then other episodes are like
“Will Carson let the staff go to the town fair”
“who will win the flower competition”
“The cooks dropped the chicken on the floor”
“Sybil is wearing pants”
“Branson is still fraternizing with the Downstairs”

downton downstairs and how they eat their toast:
carson: lightly toasted with a very thin layer of butter on top. look me in the eye and tell me he'd like it done any other way.
mrs hughes: not the biggest fan of toast. prefers scones, but when she absolutely has to eat it, she likes it toasted with jam only. she is eventually influenced by mr carson and puts minimal butter before she slathers it in strawberry jam.
mrs patmore: toast connoisseur; she has to be the one to crisp the bread and will not eat it otherwise. butter and preserves are the way to go. in a modern context she is a marmite lover; not a huge fan of crusts though
thomas: eats it plain with absolutely nothing on it. will put parsley butter if available though (but it never is so the mystery of whether thomas actually puts condiments on his toast remains very much intact). avid marmalade hater.
o'brien: would be gluten-free in a modern context. does not enjoy toast. don't even think about giving her some she will bite your hand off
william: he likes english muffins. if forced to eat toast he nibbles at it until it vaguely resembles an English muffin.
gwen: cuts the crusts off her bread and gets the most bombastic side eye from mrs p. liker of marmalade and heckler of daisy's anti-marmalade stance
anna: does not toast her bread and likes a thin layer of jam, so long as it doesn't overpower that taste that makes bread, well, bread. likes scones more but isn't excessively picky about it. will occasionally pop scrambled eggs onto her toast, and gets mr bates into it.
mr bates: toasts his bread, and puts butter and jam in even quantities. apparently he is a liker of marmalade, but this was only said in response to thomas' denouncement of it at the table. does he actually enjoy it? we'll never know. crust enjoyed. as mentioned above he puts scrambled eggs on his toast every once in a while.
daisy: very particular about how it's done. she wants untoasted bread, lots of butter, and lots of jam, but not too much of either condiment or it'll make her sick. she despises marmalade and would actually cry as a child if someone forced her to eat it. always eats her crusts, and will eat toast as a midnight snack. she's clearly a fan.
ivy: no crusts, no toasting, no butter, and just puts jam. fights with daisy sometimes about their stances on how toast is supposed to be enjoyed. eventually caves and starts toasting it.
alfred: did not inherit his aunt's genes and is a huge fan of bread. he will literally talk to you for hours about baking bread and how much butter is too much butter. will literally not shut up about toast. eats it with what he believes is the golden ratio of butter (it isn't).
jimmy: likes it a little burnt. that's it he has no other preferences
ms baxter: anna got her scrambled egg thing from her. ms baxter is the original inventor of scrambled eggs on toast actually she patented the term
mr molesley: huge toast enjoyer. initially very adamant that it should be eaten with just butter but changes his ways after ms baxter comes into his life <3

i’m rewatching downton (don’t look at me) and episode 3 of s1 has that moment moment where bates throws the brace off the lil dock and mrs hughes makes him promise to never again “try to cure [himself]” and all i can think about is the moment of solidarity or parallel we could’ve had between him and thomas when he tried to use the the electro shock treatment

For in box love ask, have any unpopular opinions about Downton Abbey?
I'm sure I have a few unpopular opinions. Not quite sure tho what is considered as unpopular.
I like Mr Bates a lot. In fact, when I watched the show for the first time I was very much focused on Anna and Mr Bates. But Julian Fellowes did them so ugly with their harsh storylines, that I don't enjoy watching them as much anymore and feel more distanced to these characters now. But I still like them and their pure relationship very much.
I'm an Edith apologist. I know she did some nasty things in the beginning but her character development is just my favourite. She turned out to be my favourite Crawley sister, even though I adored Sybil from the beginning.
On the other side, I always feel conflicted about Mary. She is a great character for the show, absolutely. But I can't really relate to her and feel very distanced to her. But the duality of her character is definitely great characterisation.
Oh, and I think this is pretty unpopular but I actually shipped Isobel and Dr Clarkson. Only in my last rewatches I got around to really like the relationship of Isobel and Dickie. Now I think they're pretty good together but I would've preferred to see more of Isobel and Dr Clarkson.
I don't want a prequel of Downton Abbey, especially not for Cobert because the characters are strictly connected with their actors for me. I couldn't see anyone else as Cora but Liz McGovern and no one else as Robert but Hugh Bonneville. And in addition, I'm not sure if I want one official precanon story for Cobert. I want to believe that all the great fanfics that exist could be true.
I'm sure there are more but I can't think of anything else at the moment :)

It’s so sad to me that Thomas opens up to Anna about missing Jimmy and liking to belong and be more likable and than Mr. Bates comes in and he instantly shuts down. You can tell he’s basically scared of men, maybe not younger men like Andy & Jimmy but definitely more masculine or older men like Bates, Carson, the Earl, at least before the movies happened. He was definitely a bit intimidated by Richard and Guy at first as well btw. I am certain his father hurt him, it’s very sad.

Do you believe the arts (visual, written, music, film and TV, etc) can change the world…?
I think I’m seeing it happen right in front of me… and it’s awe-inspiring!
I think the writers, producers, directors and actors of the ITV true drama “Mr Bates v The Post Office” are making just this happen as they provoke public outrage at a story all about balancing ledgers and financial systems… As a qualified accountant, I know this is an outstanding creative achievement!
Sometimes artists do try to change the society they live in. Pablo Picasso’s 1937 painting “Guernica” which represents the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians - is one example. At about 16:30 on Monday, 26 April 1937, warplanes of the German Condor Legion, commanded by Colonel Wolfram von Richthofen, bombed Guernica for about two hours. On completion, Picasso’s response to the atrocity was displayed around the world in a brief tour, becoming famous and widely acclaimed. This tour helped bring the Spanish Civil War to the world's attention.
Many of the others I’ve looked at - bearing the description of “art that literally changed the world” - changed the arts rather than fundamentally benefitting large numbers of people’s lives, something that makes those involved in the “The Bates” program’s achievement all the greater. That team have called out in a compelling way a collapse of justice, and so a collapse of part of our society. They have changed the welfare and life chances of more than 700 sub-postmasters, convicted of theft after the faulty accounting system Horizon showed money was going missing around the UK.
I may be an idealist, but I believe visual artists can change the lives of other individuals, giving them images that are special to them, that can lift their spirits and give them comfort in difficult times. That’s what I aim to do.
In the UK, we’re nations who are good at the arts: taking a blank piece of paper, silence or an unknown character and injecting life into it. Our creativity is one way we’ve created wealth. Just think of Harry Potter…!
I believe great art finds a way to tell the deeper truths within its creativity. So maybe now it’s time for some of us to think bigger, like the “Mr Bates” team, to change society for the better with our art…
What do you think…?
Thanks!

Letters From Watson Liveblog - Oct. 18
Thor Bridge, Part 2 of 3
Tumblr media
Conan Doyle has made this unfortunate sort of fetishization of "tropical" women in other stories as well, but at least in this instance it's coming from a very clearly terrible person.
Tumblr media
If there's one thing I have taken away from all these stories, it's that people back then married way too fast, resulting in many relationship issues, made worse by the fact that divorce was incredibly difficult.
Tumblr media
What a roundabout justification to be an awful person. Out of all of Holmes' clients, maybe even out of all the characters, Neil is definitely one of the worst. And I'm including the murderers.
Tumblr media
I don't want to make every comment I make about this story to be pointing out how unpleasant Neil is, so I'll just say how great it is to see Holmes point out the uncomfortable position Miss Dunbar was in.
Wait actually, Neil literally just said the problem with his marriage was that he and his wife had nothing in common, and then he attempted to be with Miss Dunbar out of nothing but pure attraction. So he either didn't learn his lesson, or he just didn't care.
Tumblr media
Good on Miss Dunbar for making the best out of a bad situation. I doubt how realistic this would actually be (good business rarely equals honest actions), though it does make her seem resourceful at least.
Tumblr media
I've always found it funny how old the "gun-loving American" trope is. Also, while I would love for Neil to be the actual murderer, it's too obvious, and now that the local policeman is saying it might be him it's definitely not.
Tumblr media
The revolver was part of a set. If Miss Dunbar hypothetically were the murderer, maybe she was planning on returning it to the display and that's why she didn't get rid of it. Then again, if no obvious weapon were found soon, they'd probably be all over Neil's cache, so it probably would be better to just get rid of it.
