Ghosts remind us that we live in an impossible present -- a time of rupture, a world haunted with the threat of extinction. Deep histories tumble in unruly graves that are bulldozed into gardens of Progress. [...] Ghosts, too, are weeds that whisper tales of the many pasts and yet-to-comes that surround us. [...] Worlds have ended many times before. Endings come with the death of a leaf, [...] the death of a friendship, the death of small promises and small stories. [...] Whereas Progress trained us to keep moving forward, to look up to an apex at the end of a horizon, ghosts show us multiple unruly temporalities. [...]
Some kinds of lives stretch beyond our ken, and for us, they also offer a ghostly radiance.
The lichen that grows on tombstones is one example.
Every autumn, mycologist Anne Pringle goes to the Petersham Cemetery near Boston to trace the outline of individual lichens, watching their growth on the gravestones of local residents and dignitaries. They grow slowly, and sometimes some disappear. Some are probably the same individuals as those that first found a place to settle when those dignitaries died centuries ago.
For fleeting creatures such as ourselves, lichens are more-than-ghosts of the past and the yet-to-come.
Lichens are symbiotic assemblages of species: filamentous fungi and photosynthetic algae or cyanobacteria. Lichens are themselves a kind of landscape [...]. Many filamentous fungi are potentially immortal. This does not mean they cannot be killed [...]. Until cut off by injury, they spread in networks of continually renewed filaments. When we notice their tempo, rather than impose ours, they open us to the possibility of a different kind of livability.
Many kinds of time -- of bacteria, fungi, algae, humans, and Western colonialism -- meet on the gravestones of Petersham. The ghosts of multispecies landscapes disturb our conventional sense of time, where we measure and manage one thing leading to another. [...]
These temporal feats alert us that the time of modernity is not the only kind of time, and that our metronomic synchrony is not the only time that matters.

Whats the difference between lichen, moss, mould and mushrooms if they're all fungus? Aren't they all the same sorta thing?
so, interestingly, all of these groups are very different !! instead of naming the differences, let me quickly explain what exactly these organisms are.
lichen :
lichens are symbiotic organisms, meaning they are in themselves the product of a relationship between different organisms. to simplify it, lichens are big part fungus, & smaller part algae (protista) or cyanobacteria (monera). these different forms of life together create lichen, which grows on trees, rocks, leaves, mosses & sometimes other lichens !! to read more about lichens, check out @/lichenaday's blog :-)
moss :
mosses are actually not fungi at all !! they are small, flowerless plants. they grow on trees & in soil. :-)
mould :
mould is a type of structure that fungi can form - it is entirely fungal. it reproduces through airborne spores :-) there are many different types of mould ; some are toxic, some are used medicinally, & some are saprotrophs. (note : slime moulds & water moulds are unrelated to fungal moulds !!)
mushrooms :
so, lots of people think mushrooms are a species of fungus, but they are not. "mushroom" refers to the fruiting body of a fungus ; what a mushroom is to a fungus is comparable to what a flower is to a tree - the part that reproduces !! not all fungi produce mushrooms (e.g. moulds, which do not have fruiting bodies as the entire organism is able to release spores). there are currently only 14 000 discovered fungi that produce mushrooms !! more fungi that don't produce mushrooms include mildew, yeast & lichen.
so, yes !! they're all quite different in structure, cells & function in the ecosystem.

Okay but given that you can make alcohol from just about any plant, a world built around Minecraft could have SUCH a liquor cabinet.
You’ve got your basics, the potato and wheat vodka, gin, whiskey, then rum from sugarcane or beet sugar if you’re feeling a little adventurous.
Then you’ve got the fancier things. Dandelion and melon wine, spike vodka, pumpkin liqueur, applejack. Zhuyeqing jiu and chocolate liquor if you REALLY want to go for the cool stuff.
You’ve got mead and all kinds of moonshine, everything from carrots to kelp to sawdust brandy if you live out in the Badlands. Sunflower and rose spirits, lilac wine, even milk liquor and advocaat if you want to deviate from plants a bit.
But then you’ve got the plants that don’t exist in our sphere.
Chorus liqueur, dripleaf absinthe, glowberry champagne and sweet berry wine, glow lichen beer and crème de spore blossom, golden apple cider, glistering cordial. For the truly danger-seeking, wither rose lanique.
