Scotland Fix of the Day: The evening was supremely quiet as the moon came up over the Callanish Stones; it was calming and settling to be there alone amongst the stones – and the spirits of the people who put them up 5,000 years ago. This religious site was central to Neolithic life on Lewis for well over 1,000 years and then fell out of use. Gradually blanket peat rose in layers around the stones until only the tops were visible. In 1857 the proprietor of Lewis, James Matheson, had workers strip away five feet of peat, revealing the chambered tomb in the center. Today Callanish is cared for by Historic Monuments Scotland, one of the gems of ancient life in the Hebrides islands. #scotland #epic_landscape #highlands #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #scotland_greatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland #lovetheouterhebrides — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/kVs4rPW

Scotland Fix of the Day: Seeing Ceapabhal hill towering in the distance over the long beaches of the Isle of Harris beckons you to an historic walk in a unique Scottish Landscape. Begin by driving on down to Northton where you look out over the tidal saltings to the crofting community of An Taobh Tuath, farmhouses lining the road in traditional fashion, each croft a narrow strip of land running from the beach up the hill. Walk on out towards Ceapabhal past idyllic beaches and you'll come to Rubha na Teampaill, an ancient church built atop the ruins of an earlier broch. (The broch would be roughly 2,000 years old. The Vikings came raiding and ransacked the place in the 800's. The church you see here was rebuilt in 1528.) This is common grazing land so don't be surprised to see sheep sheltering in the church. If you are lucky you might find a crofter like Kenny MacKay out amongst the flock at lambing time. But most like you'll have the peninsula all to yourself, one of the gems of any Scottish island tour. #lovetheouterhebrides #scotland #scotlandtravel #epic_landscape #hebrides #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #scottishhighlands #scotland_greatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland #scotlanddreams — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/AySuPCI

Scotland Fix of the Day: With summer coming a Scottish travel plans in the making here's a nudge towards thinking farther afield. Consider the wild (and less trampled) realms of Harris and Lewis, islands of the Outer Hebrides where you really can get away from the crowds, with beaches like you'll find at Seilebost and Luskentyre, or explore the rugged realms of the west coast of Lewis around Uig (the blowing beach grass) or Mangersta (the broad beach at sunset.) It'll take a bit more preparation (a ferry out and back, fewer accomodations) but the adventure quotient is much higher. (And while you are there consider a far flung chance to get to St. Kilda.) #scotland #highlands #outlander #scotlandtrip #scotlandtravel #epic_landscape #highlands #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #scotland_greatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland #scotlanddreams #outerhebridescollective — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/NL3QvOi

Scotland Fix of the Day: Orkney isn’t big but it packs incredible variety into this archipelago of North Sea islands. About twenty are inhabited, connected by ferries (and airlines) running back and forth, lending a sense of busy life to the wild and ancient landscapes. You can “do” Orkney in a day but that barely scrapes the surface of everything you can find, much less do justice to the UNESCO World Heritage sites. (And besides, there are two great whisky distilleries, Highland Park and Scapa, to sample.) I’ll share just a brief sampling of Orkney here: 1. Sweeping Rackwick Bay on the Isle of Hoy. 2. The Ring of Brodgar stone circle 3. St. Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall 4. Harbor cats on Shapinsay 5. The Ness of Brodgar neolithic archeology dig 6. Scotland Fix of the Day: Last night a friend sent an urgent request that was right down my alley. His buddy is in Scotland right now, doing a looping trip around the far Northwest coast. Did I have any advice of things he should do? Well, since he was in Ullapool I thought he should go on up to Stan Pollaidh (Stac Polly) and have a go at the popular climbing peak. Not daunted by doubtful weather, he did it today in snow squalls – and had the time of his life. What a great report, filled with intrepid adventure and the serendipity of travel. It is spectacular territory, another realm from what we usually think of the "Highlands." Worth finding the wee one-track road to get here. By the way, this view is taken from atop Sgorr Tuath with the weathered red sandstone framing up the Stac. #scotland #highlands #hillwalking #epic_landscape #highlands #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #thehighlandcollective #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #scotlandmagazine #scottishhighlands #scotland_greatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/iNzwv5B

Scotland Fix of the Day: Travelers to Scotland who come to me for advice have learned that I may well send them farther afield. One of my favorite suggestions? Take a fling and head for the Outer Hebrides, to Lewis and Harris. These islands rate pretty high on the off-the-beaten-track scale because travel there involves a couple of ferry connections, a sure way to cut the number of fellow travelers you’ll encounter. My favorite route departs from Ullapool and takes you out to bustling Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. From there it’s an hour drive out to the rugged west coast to places like Uig Bay and Mangersta Beach. You can include the Butt of Lewis, too, where you’ll find on of those iconic Stevenson lighthouses. Central to any Lewis journey will be the Callanish Stones — second only to Stonehenge amongst Neolithic monuments (and much more accessible.) Then drive down to the Isle of Harris. (You’ll notice that Lewis and Harris are not actually separate islands, but they are distinct territories in the minds of of the islanders and I wouldn’t argue about it with a local in the pub.) Harris is more mountainous than Lewis and has some of the world’s greatest beaches, like Luskentyre Strand. The road there from Tarbert meanders through the hills before descending to a glorious road that hugs the west coast. You’ll loop on down to Leverburgh, continue east to Rodel (where you can see the old church with islands strewn beyond to the south.) Then swing north through a moonscape where the road twists and turns to snake through boulders and down into fishing villages with names like Scadabay and Plocropol. Continue on and you are back in Tarbert where you can catch the other island ferry that goes back to the Isle of Skye. Taken all together this is a stunning journey; everyone comes back raving. #scotland #outerhebrides #islandjourney #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #scotland_greatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #scotlandtravel #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland #scotlanddreams #offthebeatentrack #travelphotography #unesco #worldheritage #remoteislands #historicscotland — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/8sWUL3l

Scotland Fix of the Day: If my last advice, to venture to Lewis and Harris, got your wanderlust revved up you might consider extending your journey into a truly epic island road trip. Cut loose, catch the ferry from Leverburgh (on Harris) to North Uist, South Uist and Barra beyond for a saga-worthy drive down the Outer Hebrides. You'll arrive on Berneray with it's stunning white sand beach (and flowering macharir in season) on the west coast looking out over the Minch. These islands are much lower than Lewis and Harris, sprinkled with lochs and lochans, crofting townships and never far from the sea. Their pleasures are subtle, best found by searching souls. My own journeys there have been filled with serendiptiy: seeing a sheep dog out freelancing around the sheep on a summer evening, commiserating with an island pony on a sodden day, meeting Donald MacDonald, a gaelic bard, in his thatched cottage for tea. At the southern end you'll wind up at Barra and it's aptly named town, Castlebay. (And more beaches. Always more.) From there you can take a ferry all the way back to Oban (always check seasonal sechedules) or it's possible to fly back. The airport is famous for the fact that flights land on the beach. (Flight times vary a bit with the tides.) #scotland #islands #outerhebrides #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #thehighlandcollective #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #scotlandmagazine #scottishislands #scotland_greatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #scotlandtrip #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland #scotlanddreams #islanddreams #scotlandoffthebeatentrack — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/8Seto4r

Scotland Fix of the Day: Tobermory always vies for prettiest coastal village in Scotland but this evening it had an extra sparkle. It says something about the Isle of Mull that Tobermory with only 1,000 people is the biggest town on the island. It maintains an authentic feel busier islands (Skye) struggle to maintain. But interestingly it's a planned village, the product of the famous engineer Thomas Telford in 1788. Two hundred years before that in 1588 a Spanish galleon fleeing the Armada debacle anchored in the bay to take on provision. Stories vary but the gunpowder magazine exploded and it sank, taking with it (so the legend says) £300,000 worth of gold bullion. Treasure hunters have been diving for it ever since, the last serious effort taking place in 1950. Mostly travelers get here by ferry from Oban, but there is a smaller ferry there at the end of the pier that takes you over to the Ardnamurchan peninsula, a much more adventurous exploration route. #tobermory #scotland #highlands #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #thehighlandcollective #visithebrides #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland #scotlanddreams — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/71ilyd4

Scotland Fix of the Day: There are days in Scotland where I relish nothing so wonderful but the fresh breeze on an island shore, rain racing away to reveal a bright landscape, or the melancholy of clouds gathering at sunset. Right now, in the depth of winter, it might be worth thinking forward to such times coming again – and hatching a plan to be there when they do. Island locations: 1. Berneray in the Outer Hebrides 2. Westray in Orkney 3. Fair Isle 4. Isle of Lewis 5. Scotland Fix of the Day: Scots have been building with stone for a very long time. I could see that standing on the hill above Carloway Broch, built two millennia ago by Iron Age folk here on the Isle of Lewis. When new it was roughly thirty feet (ten meters) high, a perfect cylindrical tower house that exuded wealth and status. But as I looked I wondered, "Where did all the stones go?" The answer was (most likely) into the (newer) nearby stone fence that you see here or just maybe into the stone houses down the road. "Robbing" stones, the practice of reusing stones leftover from previous structures, has been common since ancient times and makes perfect economic sense. (Why quarry new stones when there's a pile of old stones just over there?) I saw that pattern when I watched a builder repair an old drystane dyke (stone fence built without mortar) on the north coast. Stone by stone he robbed an old fallen down fence and fitted them into the new fence. Slowly it dawned on me that these very same stones have probably been carried back and forth across this ancient landscape many times over the centuries, reused over and over to suit new purposes and needs. He wasn't disturbing some artifact, he was just carrying on a tradition of life thousands of years old in the stony land. #scotland #highlands #outlander #epic_landscape #highlands #hebrides #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #thehighlandcollective #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #scotlandmagazine #scottishhighlands #scotland_greatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland #scotlanddreams #lovetheouterhebrides — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/uht7nJU

Scotland Fix of the Day: The coasts of Scotland are spectacular but treacherous. The towering cliffs and submerged reefs were wrecking ships and killing sailors for centuries before the Northern Lighthouse Board started building the lighthouses that we here today just expect to grace scenes of nautical splendor like Noup Head (built 1898) on Westray in Orkney. Amazingly one family – the Stevensons – was responsible for the design and building of 82 of the most spectacular lighthouses. Right now I'm reading their story in the excellent book, The Lighthouse Stevensons by Bella Bathurst. The scion of the family was Robert Stevenson, who in 1789 as a young engineer, assisted his father-in-law in building the Dennis Head Old Beacon on North Ronaldsay in Orkney. It was classically beautiful but a poor aid to stormswept sea captains. But in the succeeding decades his innovations set the standard for lighthouse design and construction, not just in Scotland but around the world. Over the years I have (like many travelers) been drawn to these fantastic structures built at such cost to in remote locations. Neist Point on the Isle of Skye is one, built in 1909 by David Alan Stevenson (Robert's grandson), features perhaps the most spectacular setting of any. Another, at the Butt of Lewis (built 1860s by David Stevenson, Robert's son) guards hazardous cliffs. And Cape Wrath, seen form my cabin porthole as we rounded Scotland's northern headlands, refers not to vengeful terrain but the Norse word for a "turning point", one that would take them home. (Robert 1828.) Fair Isle South (1892 by David and Charles) was bombed in WWII. Altogether I find the Stevenson's story both compelling and daunting, like a myth from a lost world. Like a place you might find in a tale by Robert Louis Stevenson who shunned the family business to write books. #scotland #heather #highlands #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #thehighlandcollective #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland #scotlandgreatshots #scottishhighlands #scotland_greatshots #igersscotland #unlimitedscotland #scotlandtrip #scotlandtravel #thescottishcollective #simplyscotland #moodyscotland #scotlanddreams #orkney — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/tbBcf5G
