F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 6 - Monaco

Alrighty! Ticking another race off the re-watch list before we go away (and before I completely forget about this re-watch project being a thing).

According to the list I made to keep track of my watch through, this is the third last race I haven’t seen anything from, though Monaco being the procession it normally is most years idk if that’ll mean much. This was the first of Rosberg’s 3 Monaco GP wins, and I think there’s some late race chaos but apart from that I’m going into this completely blind, so let’s jump in!

ngl I go miss the pre-race graphic that had the world map before zooming in on the host race du jour, as I geography nerd I really enjoyed it

Okay, starting grid whiplash:

A Merc front row before it was cool (Rosberg pole, Lewis P2); Seb P3; Jenson P9, Jev P10.

Honestly, not that whiplash inducing, the beloveds have not been screwed over for once

Helmet watch: Lewis’ rainbow helmet visor is still the prettiest thing ever

Also it is so weird seeing all the Merc guys in white overalls, even though we haven’t had the all-black look for that long I’m astounded as to how quickly I’ve gotten used to it dsvhdfvhd

Also also: this race happened in the mist of some classic off-grid drama (Merc had a non-sanctioned tyre test with Pirelli after the Spanish GP, no one was happy about it bc in-season testing was banned at this point in time, mouthing off with and in the press ensued)

Not that has anything to do with the race action, I just find it funny

[Formation Lap]: All but 4 cars starting on the super softs, though back in 2013 all the cars in the Top 10 had to start the race on the tyres they ran in Q3, unlike the free choice they have now

“I think Raikkonen’s got a great chance of winning this race” Brundle he’s down in 5th find some sense

(the things I endure for this)

[Start/Lap 1]: Juuuuuust about all clean into turn 1, Lewis and Seb were VERY racy

oh maybe not all clean there’s a yellow flag

OH SHIT one of the Caterhams just lost it’s front wing

oh god more McLaren on McLaren violence

[Lap 2]: Seb is still harassing Lewis, brat Seb be bratting

and they’re still at it into the swimming pool

[Lap 3]: Meanwhile Rosberg has a 1.4 second lead

I love how unstressed I am about Lewis v Seb, it’s always so spicy but such good racing

meanwhile Jenson has been complaining about Perez being too aggressive, make of that what you will

and another yellow flag somewhere

[Lap 4]: oh the shot of the cars going through swimming pool is 👌

(I am occasionally a Monaco apologist, it’s v pretty)

[Lap 6]: Okay the race has calmed down 😅

Classic precession time, everyone will be trying to stay close to the car in front in the hope of jumping them at the pit stops

5 and a half seconds covering the top 6, which somewhat proves my point

oh jeez the McLaren violence replay, can we not race each other into the chicanes lads?! 😵‍💫

[Lap 9]: aaaand there’s the second Caterham on fire, right at the pit lane entry too

Caterham’s not good, very bad Monaco GP

oh the smoke is blowing across the track, excellent

man how did F1 manage before the Virtual Safety Car, bc it’s just a yellow flag rn

though maybe I think it should be full SC

there is a very large group of marshals pushing the car back into the pits like 😳

well that was mildly terrifying

[Lap 11]: Jenson potentially chasing down Fernando 🍿

2000s F1 intensifies

[Lap 12]: Di Resta fastest lap????

Okay so bc the Mercs aren’t pulling away from the rest of the field as quickly as everyone expected, it’s apparently forcing the rest of the grid into a one stop bc of how small the gaps are between everyone

(or at least that’s how I’m interpreting what Crofty and Brundle are saying, either I’m dumb or they’re dumb one of the two)

[Lap 16]: Jenson is still reasonably close to Fernando, but maybe not quite close enough to get the pass done on track

[Lap 17]: cut to the Merc garage prepping tyres 👀

[Lap 19]: Livery watch: as much as I am a black Merc stan, the old silver livery does look very pretty in the sunshine

[Lap 21]: somewhat related it is SO STRANGE being on board with Lewis and not seeing the number 44.

Like 10 is Gasly’s number to me, I am getting whiplash asfuhasufh

(2013 was the last season before drivers got to pick driver numbers, before then car numbers were assigned based on where a team finished in the constructors. For example Merc had 9 and 10 for finishing 5th in 2012)

[Lap 23]: and we have out first proper pitstop folks!! It’s Danny Ric, who swapped his softs for super softs, which doesn’t make much sense

And Bottas pits too

...and he’s still in the pits. I fear the graphic is stuck

[Lap 24]: Yeah I think the graphic is borked Val is still being shown as being in the pits

“target minus 1.6 on your dash” Bono I don’t think Lewis has actual rocket fuel in his car please be serious

[Lap 26]: And Webber pits for softs!

sounds like a pit stop shuffle is incoming since the Mercs were given the hurry up

will they double stack? or will they pit on sequential laps?

Meanwhile Di Resta did a pretty decent pass on Massa into Saint Devote

[Lap 27]: And Raikkonen pits, as does Jenson

Disco music ensues for the pit stop shuffle

And a wild Dan fastest lap just for funsies

[Lap 28]: Still not Merc stops

the hilarity of the entire grid pitting to for Mercedes’ hand and them going ‘lol no we’re better than falling for your mind games’

(Merc have always been the funniest team on the gird)

[Lap 29]: Still no pit stop for the Mercs as Alonso pits

Just Seb and Perez still to pit in the top 10 alongside the Mercs

oh add Sutil and Jev to that list, thank you pit stop graphic

[Lap 30]: ah shit Massa’s car is sideways in the barriers at turn 1, he’s out the car thank goodness

not a very nice crash though

[Lap 31]: Seb pits

and unsurprisingly, Safety Car to clean up Massa’s car

[Lap 32]: And Rosberg finally pits

as does Lewis, the famous Merc double stack will always be famous

But as a result Lewis is behind the two Red Bulls, while Rosberg retains the lead

[Lap 33]: And a wild Daft Punk sighting... because Monaco

Man this race really had been more eventful when Monaco’s usual standards considering it’s bone dry and bright sunshine

“Fourth Monaco Grand Prix in a row to feature the safety car” and absolutely no one is surprised

I am not going to comment on the ‘lapped cars may now overtake graphic’ other than the fact it required a warning.

[Lap 36]: Anyway apparently a seized gearbox caused the fire on Pic’s car, not a fun fact

[Lap 37]: Oh Rosberg’s engineer coming in with some proper tyre stats (60% remaining on the rears and 50 odd on the front, if you’re wondering)

[Lap 38]: and SC in this lap!

we’ll also be getting back under way at half distance

[Lap 39]: green flag!

oh jeez, Maldonado in the barriers (he’s fine) but the impact pulled the tecpro barriers into the track.

my goodness has this race been eventful

and cut to all the mechanics and engineers running down the pitlane to get back onto the grid

ohhhhh yeah people can change their tyres on the grid under a red flag. inch resting.

zdvuhdfuvhdf Ted cornering Horner in the pits for a quick quote, I adore his tenacity

so with some very rough maths there’s 33 laps to go, assuming the race ran to full distance, so it would absolutely make sense to change tyres here.

(look at me trying to be Ted)

Speaking of Ted, he’s playing team boss bingo. He’s added Toto Wolff and Martin Whitmarsh to his red flag interview list.

And in breaking news apparently Alonso has to give Perez P6 for going off track.

And Ted’s now chatting to Claire Williams. Just one more for team boss bingo.

(Also I miss Claire SO MUCH the paddock has way less braincells without her)

[Lap 47]: and looks like the race is getting back underway!

(less red flag chatter bc it’s just hit midnight and I need to get better at timing these re-watches)

Raikkonen & Hulkenberg on the softs, everyone else re-starting back on the supers

And Alonso did give Perez P6 under the SC.

Safety Car pulling in and the camera once again followed it instead of the lead car

[Lap 48]: Anyway, green flag!

thankfully all clear through Sant Devote

Lewis once again resuming to chance down Webber

[Lap 49]: While Alonso is trying to get P6 back from Perez

[Lap 50]: Rosberg already 1.2 seconds ahead of Seb

and DRS re-enabled

Lewis is SO CLOSE to the back of Mark

and he once again tries into Rascasse but nothing comes from it

[Lap 51]: once again the shot of all the cars running through swimming pool is sexy

[Lap 52]: oh damn Raikkonen and Perez fisticuffs now, once again at the nouvelle chicane, both of them went wide

[Lap 55]: Lewis being told to mind to tyres so he has some grip left at the end of the race

[Lap 56]: idk what Rosberg is running on but he’s 2.7 seconds ahead of Seb now

This is turning out to be a poor choice of late night viewing my blood pressure is likely not having a fun time

I swear the only thing missing from this race is rain, and I’m very glad it never happened

[Lap 65]: So we’re past the 2hr mark, but the race is still going somehow

idk my understanding of time limits is very foggy at this point, the incidents combined with it being half past midnight had left my brain mush

oh jeez the bird on the apex of the nouvelle chicane, v pretty slow mo shot of it flying away though

aka ah shit here we go again

(Raikkonen’s engine is losing water bc it’s too hot so that’s fun)

I also forgot to mention is lovely Francois Cevert tribute helmet, you can find the pics in my ‘monaco grand prix 2013′ tag

but back to racing, the fisticuffs between Raikkonen and Perez got upgraded to violence.

Perez tried it down the inside and got pinched as Raikkonen turned in for the chicane and bits of carbon fibre went flying

[Lap 70]: And Raikkonen has a puncture

[Lap 71]: And Jenson gets past Fernando!!

oh the replay of Jenson getting past Fernando through Anthony Noghes 👌

[Lap 73]: the incidents don’t stop coming, Perez just shot over the nouvelle chicane

ah he’s pulling off, might be a brake failure

[Lap 74]: But that promotes Sutil to fifth, Team Silverstone truly living their best lives

[Lap 75]: 4 laps remaining klaxon

and jeez a 4.4 second gap between Rosberg and Seb

well we know which Merc was filled with rocket fuel

[Lap 77]: wild that with all the chaos of the race, Rosberg has still led every lap of the race

big ‘call an ambulance but not for me’ energy

[Lap 78]: Final lap!!

vhfduvhs Seb going 1:16.5 and getting fastest lap

[Finish]: and Monaco Man wins the Monaco GP!!

Seb P2, Webber P3, Lewis P4, Sutil P5, Jenson P6, Alonso P7, Jev P8, Di Resta P9 and Raikkonen P10.

Whew, I am Niki Lauda looking around dazed and he is me. That race was EVENTFUL. Like so eventful I’m glad I’m going straight to bed after this. Though in classic Monaco fashion is was more incident central as opposed to lots of racing, but gosh so much happened we really do not have time to unpack all of the that. What a race 😵‍💫

Fernando Alonso & His Relationship With Cards

I'm sure we're all familar with the cards on the back of Fernando's Vegas GP helmet by now, but did you know his relationship with cards goes a lot deeper?

I. Magic Tricks

You've probably seen or heard someone at least mention Fernando's propensity for card tricks. As far as I can tell he was doing them(publically) as far back as 2003 all the way to as recently as 2018. Even once performing a card trick, with a condom and a teddy bear(!??!?!??!!), in front of Valentino Rossi who said "How was that possible?"(x)

But how did this start? According to James Allen, "Fernando admits to having been heavily influenced by his grandfather, a mercurial figure, who taught him magic and card tricks, still one of his passions away from the race track."(x) And I'm not sure the validity of this one, because I couldn't find an actual source, but apparently he once said: "My parents are responsible for the two things I like doing most - driving and magic tricks. They bought me my first go-kart and a magician's kit."

In several interviews he described it as his hobby off track, and that he loved learning new tricks and surprising others in the garage with them! So clearly cards are pretty important to him both as a hobby but also to who he is as a person since they've been with him just as long as racing has.

II. Card Symbolism in His Helmets

This is the reason I originally made this post, but I thought I should also explain the origins of his card fascination first. As I said, we probably all remember the cards on the back of his helmet in Vegas, but did you know that wasn't the first time he had cards on the back of his helmet?

From 2008-2013, he used to have a pair of cards on the back of his helmets. The symbolisms of the cards themselves as well as the evolution of their design is really fascinating to me! Even more so with the recent development of the card choice in 2023.

Fernando said he wanted to reference his two titles in some way on the back of his helmet and after his friend sent him several ideas, he decided on having two cards(an ace of clubs and an ace of hearts, sometimes pictured with 05 and 06 on them as well), saying: "I picked the cloverleaf [the ace of clubs - Ed] to give me luck, but the only pity is that it doesn't have four leaves!"(X)

2008.

Here's the very first appearance of the cards! They're displayed flat, with the 05 and 06 clearly visible

2009.

Very similar to 2008, but with a slightly different design, and they're maybe a bit more straight with less shadow?

2010.

This is the first major change! I was sad they didn't have the years on them anymore, but then I realized they're sparkly to match with his signature lightning bolts on the top of the helmet!!

2011.

Honestly I'm still somewhat unsure if this is the actual 2011 helmet? It's pretty difficult to find clear photos of the back of helmets from older seasons. It's easiest to find them on replica sites or auction sites so I'm not 100%? But anyways, I like that this has the championship years on the underside of the cards

2012.

This is when I started getting weirdly emotional about the helmets. Do you see how they've progressed from being a centerpoint to being curled up and sad at the bottom of the helmet? Not listing the year anymore??

2013.

Same thoughts as 2012. And after this season, they cease to exist (just like his ferrari chair in the garage, WOAH CALLBACK), until cards make a reeappearance in his Vegas helmet, albeit in a different form

2013 Monaco(Honorable Mention):

For some reason 2013 helmets were easier to find proper pictures of, so I happened to witness this absolute beauty. The creativity of this helmet genuinely blows me away??? Wanting to keep the card motif, but making sure to incorporate it into the rest of the puzzle piece design?? Mwah! There was another special 2013 helmet but they didn't change the cards at all so I really applaud this one

2023 Las Vegas(The Return of The King):

The magnificent return! But look! The cards are different cards! Instead of being two aces, it's now an ace of hearts, a four of hearts(his driver number of course!) and, the, now iconic, representation of himself as a Joker. I literally could not believe my eyes when this helmet was released and I saw the Joker card, what a fucking silly old man....I really wonder if he felt nostalgic having cards on his helmet again or if he didn't think about it all and was just like, "ah cards because Vegas!!!"

III. Why Does This Matter?

*The rest of the post was factual, this is moreso my personal thoughts on the symbolism of the cards/designs

This post spawned from me recently watching the 2010 Bahrain gp and noticing "hey wait a minute...are those CARDS ON THE BACK OF HIS HELMET!?" It's a really tiny detail that's unfortunately covered up by the HANS device pretty much whenever he's wearing the helmet, so it's really difficult to spot! But I became fascinated with the fact that he had cards on his helmet before that recent helmet, and now here we are!

There's something to me about how the design of the cards evolves over the course of six seasons from the cards being front and center to being smaller, more folded up and closer to the bottom of the helmet. As I said, the 2012-2013 ones genuinely made me depressed because it feels, symbolically, like his hopes for getting another Ace are becoming more and more unlikely and falling away until they eventually fall falt and fade away entirely after 2013 and disappear for basically a decade.

But when they return? They're not the same cards! Instead of representing Fernando's championships, they now represent him as a person, displaying his driver number and his persona of being a Joker!! Though I do think it's interesting he happened to keep the Ace of Hearts, even though he talked more about the Ace of Clubs before. I'm not sure it's actually this deep in reality, but I like to think that it's him not letting his championships(and the lack thereof) define him, but rather letting who he is as a person shine and be the centerpoint instead! But on a sadder note, as @suzuki-ecstar said to me, maybe the Aces aren't there anymore because he's lost all hope for a chance at a third Ace entirely :(

She is known for being the only woman to be an official Formula One driver since Giovanna Amati in 1992 and the second female driver with points since Lella Lombardi in 1976, thus creating history in the world of motorsport. At the 2019 Spanish Grand Prix she took her first victory, becoming the first woman in history to win a grand prix.

After a competition against Valtteri Bottas with whom she remained tied in terms of points during the last three races of the 2019 season, she won the title of sub champion in the drivers' world championship giving Ferrari the second place in the constructors' world championship.

In 2020 she suffered a horrible accident that made her unable to finish the Tuscan Grand Prix, after that race her results during the last eight races went down.

In the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix she returned to the podium (and in the championship) in second position after a close competition against Max Verstappen due to losing control of her car causing both of them to almost collide, but she managed to regain control and finish the race without no harm.

Her younger brother, Oliver Torres, is a Moto GP driver for Yamaha Motor Racing.

Arabella was born in Leganés, a Madrid’s municipality, on 26 may 2000, as the eldest of two siblings: she and her little brother, Oliver Torres. Since she was a little girl she grew up with Formula 1 at home, as her father was a big fan and never missed a race although she was not too interested in the motor world of until one of her uncles gifted her brother a mini kart for christmas that she ended up using it, which sparked her curiosity about cars.

Her interest in cars began to grow, she began to watch Formula 1 with her father and her uncle, she noticed car brands and models and was passionate about car movies. She has mentioned several times that the Fast And Furious saga is one of her favorites.

From December 2018 to December 2020 she resided in Monte Carlo, Monaco. In 2021 she bought an apartment in London, England with her partner, the spanish football player Hector Bellerin. She currently lives between Monte Carlo and London.

Torres began her racing career in karting at the young age of 9, competing in different categories. She won the Spanish Championship in the novice category in 2009, won the cadet category in 2010 and two more consecutive times. In 2013, in the KF3 European Championship she had a horrible accident when she reached second place, thus being the only race that she has not finished, a tire on her car burst causing her to fly several meters until she crashed into a fence in front of the stands. She had several spinal injuries and had to undergo surgery several times so she had to retire for a year, losing the opportunity to be signed by the Red Bull Junior Team.

At the age of 14, a year after her accident she returned to the world of motorsport in Formula 3 with Prema PowerTeam, finishing in sixth position in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, in 2015 she finished on the podium in second position.

In 2016 she signed with the Ferrari Driver Academy and entered Formula 2 where she won first place in the 2016 and 2018 seasons.

Two years later, in 2019, she was announced as a driver for Scuderia Ferrari for Formula 1 alongside Charles Leclerc. During her contract with Ferrari she raced 38 races of which she won 9 and came second in the 2019 drivers' championship.

On December 13 2020, during the race in Abu Dhabi, Ferrari announced that Torres would not be part of the team for the following season and a week later it was announced that she would be replaced by Carlos Sainz Jr. On March 2 2022 during the presentation of their new car Mercedes announced, after almost three months of confusion about Arabella's future in Formula 1, that the driver had signed a contract with them for a duration of eight years, that is, until 2029.

“Max,” Daniel calls to him from the bedroom, just as he is rinsing the shampoo from his hair. Not wanting shampoo in his eyes or his mouth, Max keeps them all firmly shut.

“Baby?” Daniel says again, louder.

The warm water is a gentle relief running over his sweat sticky skin, nowhere near the scalding temperatures Daniel sets their shower to at home. It’s why Max had insisted that they clean off separately, the Austin heat far too much for Max to endure boiling water too, despite Daniel’s pouting and dramatic insistence that Max couldn’t just ‘fuck and flee.”

“Yes,” he calls when all the suds are safely sliding past his shoulders, but he didn’t need to shout. When he opens his eyes he sees Daniel leaning against the doorway with a smirk, still wearing his unbuttoned satin shirt, cowboy hat and nothing else. His wedding ring sits heavy on his finger, and Max thumbs over the matching one on his own hand.

Max’s come is a shiny presence he can still see smeared between Daniel’s thighs.

The sight of him makes Max’s dick twitch. Daniel notices and his grin only widens.

“Baby,” he says again, too sweet. “Baby, why is your most recent Google search is it weird that my husband saying yeehaw makes me come?”

And just like that, Max suddenly longs for a hot shower, an excuse for why his cheeks start to burn red.

“Why are you snooping through my phone?” He demands, forcing himself not to turn away casually and instead keep rubbing the hotel’s own body wash under his armpits.

“I wasn’t snooping,” Daniel says easily, “I was looking to get us some ribs delivered, my phone died at the track, remember?”

Max makes a noncommittal noise because vaguely he does remember Daniel saying he needed to put it on charge. That was before Max started pawing at him the moment the hotel door shut behind them though, and then it had been forgotten by both of them.

There’s just the noise of the extractor fan whirring for a moment, but Daniel doesn’t move. When Max sneaks a glance at him, he’s still leaning against the door frame looking amused.

“Sooo.” He drawls out the word in the stupid Texas accent that Max wishes he didn’t find so strangely sexy. “Are we going to talk about this, little lady, or-“

“Nope,” Max says firmly, turning off the shower.

Daniel nods. It makes the lights of the bathroom catch on his chain and Max- Max really wants to fuck him again.

“What about the one below it?” He asks, “Daniel Ricciardo Austin 2023 photos?”

“Nope,” Max says again, stepping out of the shower and reaching for his towel. He’s smiling now too, because he knows that beneath Daniel’s teasing that one will have made him happy to see.

“Okay,” Daniel says, then he unlocks Max’s phone. “What about how to ask my husband to-“

“Daniel,” Max interrupts, taking the phone from his hand and putting it into the empty sink. “Do you want to read more of my internet history, or do you want to get back on the bed and play good cowboy, bad cowboy again?”

Daniel grins, takes the cowboy hat from his head and puts it onto Max’s. When his arms wind around Max, the silky fabric of his shirt presses cool against Max’s shower-warm skin, his nipples.

“Well, when you put it like that,” Daniel says, leaning in to put his mouth on the skin just beneath Max’s ear. “Yeehaw, baby.”

Max laughs and pinches Daniel’s ass, at the same time as his dick twitches again. Backing him out of the bathroom, towards the bed, his phone is forgotten in the bathroom.

Google never had all the answers when it came to them, anyway.

Sebastian Vettel x RBDesignEngineer! Reader

Set in 2013 during the GP, Jennifer is fresh out of uni and has made a name for herself within the F1 world. She joins Redbull-Renault as one of their engineer designers and easily fits into the team, forming friendships easily. Most of all, she captures the attention of three time world champion, Sebastian Vettel.

Part 3 - here’s the LINK to part 2. After Red Bull’s first and second place win in Malaysia, the team enjoy a 3 week break, and partying ensues for the youngsters in the team. Sebastian finds himself steering more and more in Jen’s direction, the two dance a little too close and Luke is pissed. Warning: the bf does get a little physical but nothing in detail so just a tw.

My eyes trailed after Sebastian, swooning uncontrollably for the driver. He was kinda sweaty, his hair was a mess from attempting to rid his helmet hair, and there was just something about that smile that made me want to sigh out loud at his beauty. I was quite literally admiring him, it felt like I had no control, but there was just something so overwhelmingly attractive about him that hurt my soul. When he turned, he caught me looking, so I offered him a friendly smile in response. Shit, that was slightly embarrassing. Sebastian smiled to himself, making his way over as I pushed myself up further on the bench. “Hey you.” He gently spoke, coming to sit besides me. I didn’t doubt for a second that he had seen me staring, now I knew I was burning up hotter than ever.

“Hiya, good practice today.” I commented, glancing down to my knees, sucking my bottom lip in to avoid smiling so much. When it was just Sebastian and I, I felt like a completely different person, I knew it was bad, but something deep inside of me softened in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. The feeling was addictive, the sensation of butterflies filling my stomach filled me with joy- followed by a sickening guilt shortly after. “Thanks. It went good, how has- how has your day been?” He asked as I scanned my eyes over his expression. He just seemed so genuine and pure, I hadn’t felt any man so intrigued with me before.

“Good, thank you. Busy as always, it’s been fun… I- that sounds so nerdy.” I facepalmed, “no, it is fun. This whole thing is fun.” He pointed out as I glanced around. “So crazy that we’re actually doing all of this.” “I know… who would’ve thought? Anyway- we’re going out tonight, are you coming?”

“Yeah sure.” I cringed at how fast I answered, my eagerness sounding a little too obvious.

“Ah, that was easy!” Seb giggled, eyes wide in amusement. “I just haven’t been out in a while.” I was quick to defend. “If only I could ask you on a date that easily.” He nudged into my shoulder as I scoffed out a laugh. “Shut up, Seb. What’s the plan for tonight??” On the inside I was a raging, blushing mess- yes Seb, I do wish it was that easy to say yes to you but- no! No I couldn’t think that way.

I ended up in some random bar, Luke of course following behind me, his grip was tight on my hand as he steered me away from saying a real hello to Mark. I watched the Australian’s eyes narrow towards my boyfriend in distaste. “Hey um… when do you think you’ll be heading home?”

“Well aren’t we going together?” Luke frowned. “Oh… I was going back to Monaco. Not England…” “Oh, I’ll come too.” He shrugged, barely even sparing me a glance as he stared up and down at the woman behind the bar serving drinks. I scoffed, pulling my hand away.

“Don’t you have work?” “Do we have to talk about this now?!” He groaned before he even replied, rolling his eyes and staring back down to me with a defensive look in your eye. “Yes. We do.” He had a funny look in his eye, one that just screamed to me that something was wrong. “What? What’s happened?” I sighed, automatically knowing there had to be something with him- as always.

“I lost my job, I don’t need it anway, I’ll just come to Monaco with you an-“

“What?!” Had I heard that right?! He’d lost his god damn job?! Something inside me raged as I looked back up to him with wide eyes. “You’re not coming to Monaco with me.” I firmed. “Baby, I’ve got nowhere else to go!” “Go to your mums!” I exclaimed, grateful the music was relatively loud in here. My comment didn’t sit right with him, I knew I shouldn’t have said it as soon as the words fell off my lips. Luke hated feeling like a failure in life. He likes to be in Monaco where he could ‘pretend to feel rich’. Jokes on him because when we were in Monaco it was too expensive to even do anything.

“What do you mean? Go back to my mums?” Luke harshly spun to face me directly now, causing me to step back slightly as he attempted to get up in my face. In return I swallowed, cowering my head. The smaller I looked, the less people would notice me, including him. My voice weakened instantly. “Don’t do this again…”

“We’re fucking leaving!” He snarled as I felt tears welling up in my eyes. “Oh- oh my god no you’re not crying.” But I was, and he was laughing now at me. Luke losing his job and deciding he’d follow me to Monaco meant he just wanted to sponge off me. I had no love for this man, just pure guilt that kept us together. The only reason he was here was because I was weak. I’d spent years and years and used my dads will to pay for the apartment in Monaco. He couldn’t come and invade that place.

As quick as Luke’s anger began, he was quick to morph it into a different emotion. Fake humiliation. “I’ve got no fuckin’ life baby…” wait? No real humiliation, he stood up straighter, noticing Sebastian nearby. Luke would catch nobody overhearing him speaking to me like this. The fact I had tears welling in my eyes was a huge give away to everybody that things weren’t ok, and that panicked Luke. Despite Luke’s numerous complaints about me working with Seb, he still tried to impress the man who seemed to give him daggers at any given point.

“Let’s not talk about this- hey mate!” Luke chimed as Sebastian awkwardly allowed him to give him an informal handshake. “Hey, uh- you good?” Sebastian’s eyes were on me, I could tell. Then there was a few, the more I glanced around the more mechanics, engineers, friends m, managers; people were glancing over in all different directions. I can’t believe we’d caused a scene, oh my god. “She’s good.” Luke falsely threw an arm around me as Sebastian attempted to walk around him in an attempt to get closer to me. “I’m asking her, not you.” He defended as I grimaced my teeth harshly together, offering a fake smile and nod. Sebastian getting involved just seemed so brave and I yearned for the care he offered- but, I knew this would and could only end ugly with him getting semi involved.

“I’m taking her home now anyway.” Luke sounded angry once again, his calm mask not lasting so long. Truthfully, he was threatened by Sebastian Vettel, who wouldn’t be. But he knew Seb as doing the decent thing like a decent human being would.

“Hey, you good?” Seb attempted to ask again, the urge to step out and go be with my friend was stronger than the urge to be with my own boyfriend. This time, Luke held his arm out, preventing Seb from getting closer, he even applied some force, nudging him away. That was the exact moment I completely lost it.

“Stop it!” I harshly yanked Luke’s arm back. “Don’t touch him like that, let’s go.” I cursed through now falling tears to my boyfriend who’s jaw was tight and he was shaking his head furiously. Seeing Luke ever lay hands on anybody was unsettling, never mind it being Seb out of all people. That had something inside of me wound up like never before.

When we got outside, he practically dumped me to one side as I sobbed loudly, the complete and utter disgust and humiliation I felt for this man becoming overwhelming. “What the fuck are you crying for?” He walked forwards, speaking harshly in my face as I flinched back, wiping harshly at the wet streams down my face. He’d ruined the night before it had even began. How was that possible? It had to be an all time record for him, and I was so fucking done. This was my life, my new life. I didn’t need this or him ruining it. “I’m the one that lost my fucking job! I don’t have any fucking money!” He threw himself forwards and for a second I thought he was going to hit me. I gasped, jumping out of the way as his fist collided with the metal door behind me with a curse. The bang rattled through my body and I desperately gasped for air, stunned by the aggressive act. All I could feel was my breathe heaving and falling in a petrified manner, I felt frightened to move, horrified that Luke had done something he’d promised to never do again. It made me self aware, I was better than this, that was abuse.

That evening we took our own methods of travel back to the hotel. I’d never had a man cry and sob on their knees for me before until he was begging me not to leave him, it was exhausting and in the end, the argument spun back onto other men including those who I worked with. In return I’d begged him to let me leave him, and despite it being the worst situation in my life, it worked. It worked and by the end of it and almost a grand on flight tickets for him later, he was gone. He was gone and I was alone, single, free- my body still rattled all night with the fear of his aggressiveness. It wasn’t until 5am that I caught a wink of sleep. I was haunted of the idea that he may return, and the calls from a ‘No Caller ID’ continuously buzzed through my phone. In the end, I turned it off, blocking all forms of life from outside the hotel room. Everything and anything could wait until the morning. I hadn’t slept well that night, I had a plane to catch and a cut to cover on my face. I felt ashamed, embarrassed, I didn’t even say my goodbyes to anybody in person, I just threw a text in their direction, claiming I was completely ‘good’ after they’d questioned me. On my ride to the airport however, my phone buzzed, this time with an unknown number. Hey, I hope you’re all good? Would you come talk to me when you’re free?

I almost shit myself at the text, raking my mind for who on earth it could possibly be. Could it be Christian? Ready to fire me? Somebody higher up, a CEO? Hi, sorry, who is this? It’s Sebastian, Hannah gave me your number My heart squeezed tighter and I felt tears well up in my eyes over the guilt I felt for my boyfriend laying hands on him last night. Extreme or not, he saw what happened, he tried to take care of me, ask if I was ok…

Hi, I’m so so sorry about last night, I’m good, I hope you are too? I’m on my way to the airport right now or I would’ve stopped by earlier to speak xx

It’s all good, I just wanted to see if you were okay? Hope you have a safe flight, I’ll see you when we get to China

I let out a sigh, wiping quickly at a fallen tear. “Miss? Miss we are here.” The driver politely spoke, eyeing me up in the rear view mirror. I didn’t even have a chance to reply to Sebastian’s message with all the hustle and bustle. It would be two weeks later when I arrived in China that I realised my mistake.

for some dumb reason while i was watching the usopen i got this idea of jenson and here we are so lets goooo

ps: this is a agegap, jenson is 9 years older than the mais character and I made some adjustments to fit the character, all the team mentioned here do exist and are the ones i support in real life

2009, Monaco

It was my dad's favorite time of the year, the Monaco GP and the one and only that we always go to watch, since I was a child. I skipped class that week just to be there, and probably my volleyball couch would be very angry once i went back to college, but family traditions are here for something. My oldest brother, Jeremy, was very close friend to someone inside the Brown garage, so not only we were watching the grand prix but we were also watching the grand prix from the big tv inside the garage.

And Jenson Button, of course.

He was fighting for the championship, something no one thought Brown could do it, especially this year. Jenson and Jeremy were close in age and they had something in common, they really like to party, and that's how they became friends - and also how i got a crush on him.

Jenson won the Monaco grand prix, he was dripping champagne and sweat once my brother introduced us. We shaked hands and shared a polite smile, nothing more. He said hi to my dad and that's all. But he and my brother went partying together, that's for sure. And tomorrow my brother would brag about it, as he always did every once in a while when they went out.

After all, he was one of the Jenson Button friends.

That's me. All me. I couldn't believe that i was here. Inside of a court. Playing pro. If you asked me how this happened, I wouldn't be able to answer. One day I was 7 playing beach volleyball with my friends and a few years later I was 23 playing pro in Turkey.

It was the finals of the European Championship, we were down 2-0, all they had to do was to win the current set, but we really wanted that title, and we were fighting for it.

We can do it. I know we can.

My dad's voice is echoing trough my mind. Play smart. Play safe. Don't risk. You can do it. Your team can do it. Trust them.

We were goind the best of 5.

That title was ours. I had the best of the best. I trust my team. The title is ours.

I looked trough the court. I knew where they weren't defending. I knew those players.

I set the ball, my outside hitter put on the block.

I made the first touch.

The libero set to me.

That point was the 14x15 we needed.

Just one point.

We can do it.

We did it.

The court went insane. The cheering. The noise. The hugs. We did it. We won. We were European champions. I made it. I the middle of the noise, the crowd, the yellow jerseys I spotted my family, my mom, my dad, my brother. And him. Jenson was there too. He was there, he was wearing the jersey with my name and number.

Rossi. 1.

The award ceremony was always my favorite part of every competition. The warm. The love. The anticipation.

"And the MVP award is going home. Is going to Turkey, Yolanda Rossi, congratulations, you are the most valuable player on this tournament."

I don't know how I'm here today. I don't know what I did to deserve the blessing of be on court, doing what I love, with people that I love. But I was.

I don't remember how I ended up being held in the air, hugging Jenson Button himself, while he was wearing my name and my number. But i remember that day was the day that we finally had something in common. I remember how we talked about our lives, our family, about England, US, about formula one, volleyball, and I remembered the crush I used to have for him. And that he's an insanely good kisser. And that after that day, there wasn't one sigle day I wanted to spend without him.

2023, California

"We met in very different moments of our lives, Like, I was in college, Jenson was being champion that year. I was 19, I didn't knew shit of life, he was on the road far more time than I was. Looking back, it makes sense why we didn't get along in the beginning. 2009 was a very strange and very distant year. But when we met again in 2013, it was different, I mean, I was in a very different place, I was already in national team, playing pro, at that point, I was the best..."

"You're still the best." Jenson cut me halfway my sentence, taking a smile from the hosts of the podcast we were on.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm still the best... but like, 2013 made sense for us. I remember that final match when I saw him wearing that infamous yellow shirt with my name on it, one of my teammates at time had to hold me. And it sounds cliche, brother best friend and so, but I crushed him so hard and took him 4 years to notice."

"It didn't, I knew way sooner. The way you were looking at me on the Monaco podium? I knew it, babe, I always knew. But as you said, the first time it didn't make sense, but later i thought that, looking back, was the right moment, we didn't rushed things and they worked the way they should. Plus, your brother would kill me if I had asked you out in 2009."

"Yeah, he would, and at this point I wouldn't have a husband." The hosts just let us tell them the story. Asking questions once in a while, just letting us talk about it.

"Yolanda had for a very long time the most insane agenda. Like, the club season went from October to May, sort of, and than the national team season was about May to September, she was almost always on court, the free periods of time she had free was like, I don't know, once in a lifetime? And my agenda was also very messy, I was traveling around the world every week and when I was not I was in Turkey with her. At the same time she was a formula one master I was a volleyball master, I got myself thinking where the other team player was missing to defend a ball, how the block wasn't right and sometimes, during a grand prix, she was on the phone with my race engineer talking about strategy, thats why we worked so well together."

Jenson love to tell people about that, it happened twice but he was very proud about how those two times I made the right call.

"I thought about stopping after Rio Olympics, and I did, for a year and a half I was traveling with Jenson around the world, and it was magical, but I miss the court, and the game, and ny teammate so badly that i take myself out of retirement. Rio was the most amazing thing in my life, i achieved my goal, I was a gold medalist at an Olympics. I never thought I could do it twice you know? Winning the title is not impossible, but it is very difficult to hold the gold for the next Olympics."

The flashbacks from that day was on loop on my mind. That game was insane. That atmosphere were amazing. It was one of the best days of my life.

"She called me and she was like "I'm on the final" as if I didn't watched the game for the semifinal, the next thing I knew was McLaren very mad at me because I was going to the airport to see my girl play her first Olympics final, and once I got there, she was also mad at me because I was supposed to be on factory. I didn't care where I was supposed to be."

"He said that but he was also very mad because I lost a game to be there to his final race and imagine how surprised I was in 2017 whe he was racing in Monaco? But we made those sacrifices to be there for each other."

Our wedding was always on topic. Always.

"Yeah, my man of honor were Seb, Mark and Lewis. And Lan's friends kept looking at them with a very intrigued face, as my friends kept looking at that amout of volleyball players walking around. I think that at our wedding there was like 20 gold medals, or more, Lewis, Seb and I together we didn't have the amount of titles they had and that was insane."

"At the end of the night we were almost competitively showing our titles to them, especially Priya and Lewis, they were on each others neck about who was the most victorious and Priya would kill me if she listen to me saying that unfortunately for her, Lewis had more titles than her."

We took a break to have a coffee, take a few pictures, eat something and to finish the episode.

"Yeah, I'm retiring after Paris. I didn't think I was coming back for Tokyo but Karch called me and I went, it was worth the price, but I'm gonna be like 34 in Paris, and all the pre Olympics and VNL apart from the club season is taking the price very seriously, but after Paris I'm retiring, I have achieved all my goals, gold medal, won everything with my teams, world champion, like, I rather retire while I'm still considered the best than to put mediocre seasons in the future."

"She says that but she was on edge once I did that. But our bodies pay the price. Being a high level athlete is very expensive, the traveling, the training, the exhaustion, being away from home, our friends, family... it's difficult, I'll be there for her last set and I'll bring every friend of mine, Lewis said that he and Seb will also be there, and Mark is still believing that she's going to Australia 2028. And fun fact, every time she's at the paddock with me, the young drivers are surrounding her, like, yeah, I'm jealous."

We had amazing 10 years of just traveling around, playing and driving for a living and sharing more things that we could ever hope to. Jenson and I build a life together. We grew and learned things about love that I know I wouldn't lear from anyone in the world. A lifetime wasn't enough to the amount of happiness we share.

yrossibutton oops, we did it again. THANK YOU to my team, my coach, my family, my husband, my friends and all the support. after rio i find it very difficult to believe that i would be here again, but my people show me how wrong i was and it was a privilege to be on the highest spot on the podium with them one more time. congrats to the brazilian team, they did amazing during these olympics and im honored to play against them. thank you tokyo, you treated me very nicely and ill be forever grateful for these days.

yrossibutton last ride with this team couldn't be different. im wearing yellow and black for the past 8 seasons in my pro life, it was a great last ride. thank you turkey, im forever grateful for all those 10 years, thank you girls, i love all and each one of you. gabi, i know you'll be the most amazing captain this team could ask for, it was a pleasure to see you grow and become the amazing player you are. see you all outside the court.

yrossibutton three in a row. wow. i dont even know where to start. the first time i put these colors on i was 22, i wear them for 12 years, i won and i lose with them. i was very happy and very disappointed too. 2016 was dream coming true. just to be there and play an olympics i was happy, and we won. 2021 was the "i made it", it was a dream i didn't knew i had it. that gold medal is more than i could have ever expected. this one i have no words to describe. i don't know what im feeling while i hold this medal. or how to say goodbye, but thats it, 12 years later and im resting that shirt, resting the captains belt and saying goodbye to the most memorable career i could ever dream about it. thank you, paris, you'll be forever in my dreams. thank you, girls, you deserved it. to priya and dahlia who are here since 2016, it was an honor and a pleasure to play with you and share more than the court with the two of you. thank you. thank you. thank you.
