mona lisa's smile | 1418
pairing: fernando/lance
rating: teen and up
word count: ~7000
tags: pre-relationship, 2021 season, non-driver lance au
summary:
Two-time world champion. Robbed from his third. A villain’s making—a slow descent from glory, trajectory fixed on an unfulfilling end. Back from his sabbatical. Fernando Alonso.
director's cut:
don't let my ramblings influence ur interpretation of the fic!
these are my notes/reflection on the fic. they don't have to be urs. different minds can come to different conclusions that are equally fantastic!
mona lisa's smile is supposed to disappear when u view her directly, but out of ur peripheral, she is always smiling mysteriously (eerily). i thought it was fitting given the characterisation of lance and the facade he kinda keeps up in the fic
my obvious issue is that since it is an incomplete fic, the focus on lance and esteban's friendship overshadowed his developing one with fernando
i thought the risotto scene was corny, i'm glad people liked it
yes, it's written so that u can't really tell if someone's talking about something or somehow implying it or thinking it
i'm impartial to when people portray lance as having daddy issues and lawrence being a bad father. obviously i don't know jackshit about lance's relationship with his dad, but i wanted to depict it in a positive light this time around
whether or not scotty was going behind chloe's back with daniel is up to u. i couldn't decide whether he would or wouldn't so i left it vague
i don't know shit about ice hockey. i had to google who the canadiens were. they're not mentioned more because i couldn't be stuffed doing more research
i back read way too many articles about lawrence buying racing point, because i thought the dts portrayal was a bit inaccurate
lance and esteban do speak french when they're together so i'm glad i at least got that part of their characterisation correct
i actually started taking duolingo lessons for french because of this fic
the style is choppy on purpose because i hate grammar and tense
the line of 'offers security physically in the only way he knows how' is not implying that lance fucks este. i think lance often grabbing parts of himself to kinda subconsciously reassure himself, i tried to transfer that vibe into his friendship with esteban
to be clear, fernando does not give a shit about lance really until he meets him again when lance is like 20/21
the part that goes 'lance had watched from the grandstands that day. the crowd roared. he hadn't thought much of it' was actually regarding fernando's abu dhabi retirement donuts, and not him winning in spain in 2013
if misappropriating classical writing in my trashy fics was a crime, i would be on death row
at this point, it is not clear whether fernando is approaching lance as part of his El Plan or if he's genuinely interested in him
re: esteban and pierre possibly both being in renault. hindsight is a beautiful thing
fernando's "we are like lions. podiums soon" is another reference to the iliad. i wasn't sure if the implication was strong enough
i was originally going to scrap the 'must've misheard italian for indian' line because i wasn't sure if it would offend people
in the risotto scene, sebastian is actually oblivious as to what's happening. he's not pretending to be. he is fully unaware
my most despised line in this fic is: a son of a billionaire he may be, but a waster of food he is not. i think it's too cheesy and doesn't fit with the style of the fic. looking back now, i'm not sure why i kept it
i think the 'lance's lack of passion' character choice stems a lot from how f1 fans think lance is somehow detached from the sport and doesn't really care for it as much as, let's say, fernando or max, who are always very clearly enthusiastic about racing. it's probably also got something to do with lance's 'monotonous voice' that people like to complain about. it's ok, though, because lance is plenty expressive in his face and body language
fernando's post-race interview after his bahrain dnf is an amalgamation of some of the actual post-race interviews he's given
my favourite line in this fic is: Un jour, vous en ferez l'expérience. Cela fait battre votre cœur pour la première fois et votre cœur ne cessera de battre après. too bad it had to be in french
the ass-tap was inspired by the video of fernando congratulating lance after lance got p3 in the wet qualifying for brazil 2023 (i believe, need to double check on that)
the aston engineer is 100% suspicious about lance and fernando
thanks for putting urself through all of that!

I adore the snippet of your figure skating AU!! 😍I love all of the AUs you come up with for them!Sebchal and skating(particularly ice dancing) are two things near and dear to my heart. I know you said you’re hand waving a lot of things but I still have many questions: Are Charles and Seb partnering each other or is Seb supposed to be only a mentor/coach? Were Seb’s medals in ice dancing or in individual skating? Is Charles gonna be the “leading” partner since he is bigger (taller and heavier) or is Seb gonna have to lift him lol? Is this inspired by the show spinning out?(i loved that show!) ANYWAYS I already love the atmosphere you’ve created with just that little sneak peek. The tension and uncertainty from Charles’ pov is *chefs kiss*. Whether or not you finish it i think it’s very nice!!💕
Ahh, thank you so much for this lovely ask 🥺 I love chatting about fics and AUs and headcanons! 🥰
I had two ideas for a figure skating AU, actually: one where Charles is in singles and Seb's his ex-skater-turned-coach, and another one (less plausible but more self-indulgent) which is where they're paired up for ice dance. The skater/coach approach would've made more sense, but I've recently developed major brainrot for ice dancing in particular. As "research" I binged this mini docu-series on the official Olympics channel, On Edge, where they follow a bunch of ice dance couples training at the same academy in Montreal; showcasing their training, prep for competitions, costume fittings, stuff like that. It's really cool and I highly recommend it! I also binged this honestly ridiculously cheesy docu-series Tessa & Scott, which followed Virtue and Moir throughout the 2013 Grand Prix season as they prepared for the Olympics in Sochi. It was... very 2010s lol but it was interesting to see how things work "from the kitchen" and all the prep that goes into preparing a program.
I watched Spinning Out when it was first released, too! That must've been...early 2020, I think? And it was a lot of fun, though they were I believe pairs skaters so there were jumps and throws involved.
Anyway, back to the fic. I'm thinking Seb's medals were in ice dance. I like incorporating "canon" elements into AUs so I'm imagining Seb being at his peak in 2010 and 2014. In 2014 they also had the inaugural Team Event, so that's another medal. Maybe he narrowly missed out on an individual medal in PyongChang and the media's sort of picked up this "well he's washed up, he's done for" narrative from that point onwards. I was thinking his long-term partner (Hanna, maybe?) retires from the sport, and he's about to follow her into retirement, but then the Italian Ice Sports Federation decide to pair him with Charles in a last-ditch effort to try for another medal.
Speaking of Charles...Much like in F1, he's hailed as a generational talent. He's dominated the junior circuit and then won all he could win in senior competitions as well. In PyeongChang he became the first - and so far only - skater to land the mythical quadruple axel, but narrowly missed out on gold due to a mistake in one of his programs. I also fell down a rabbit hole of watching video essays on the whole Russian women's skaters controversy, and how brutally they're being coached and how unsustainable that level of constantly jumping quads really is, to the point where they're being forced to retire, often due to persistent injuries, at the ages of like 17-20, which is obviously insane. So anyway, Charles lands the quad axel but because of all the training he did to get there, he ends up with a back injury and is told not to perform any more jumps not to exacerbate the injury. Which, considering skating's obsession with jumping quads at the moment, essentially translated to his career in singles being over.
I'm also handwaving the citizenship requirements and just treating it more like F1 does, where you're "loaned out" to represent a certain country while under contract, and you have to meet certain residency requirements, but don't have to apply for citizenship. Anyway, after representing Monaco in singles Charles gets an offer from the Italian Federation to join Team Italy and skate with Seb. It's a tentative partnership, but they both know it's their only chance of trying to win another medal in the upcoming Olympic cycle. So here they are.
Oh, also, I almost forgot: yes this makes no sense and is totally self-indulgent but Seb’s the lifter sjdefjrgj Maybe he’s stronger than he looks! 🙈 And considering how complex some of the lifts are, I figured Charles would be insane enough to be like, “hey, let’s do this, I trust you, it’ll look cool.”

Best Formula 1 Books
When you’re looking for the best Formula 1 books to buy and read, one of the biggest problems you come across is that all the reviews are the same – copied and pasted from Amazon. Also, how do you know if the books you like are what the reviewer likes?
The Formula 1 books below have been read by me, not just copied and pasted from other listings. I like books that share stories, that get into the emotion of the subject and leave you feeling something. I’m not a facts and figures guys, so a book full of dates, cold facts, and specifications will have me putting the book back on the shelf half-read.
I like my books like I like my F1 – fast-paced and dramatic.
So if you’re like me, the below Formula 1 books will be for you…
The Best Formula 1 Books
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Life to the Limit: My Autobiography by Jenson Button
This is actually my favourite Formula 1 book, which is why it is at the top of the list. When you read it, you can’t help but have the voice of Jenson Button in your head, which makes his jokes funnier (and this is a very funny book). While there is a lot of humour, often self-deprecating, the tone definitely takes a turn and you can’t help but be moved when Jenson talks about losing his father.
Some of the chapters are super short too, as in a handful of pages, so if you’re someone who likes to read before bed and has to finish at the end of a chapter, this book will make sure you get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Senna versus Prost
Before I read Jenson’s book, Senna versus Prost was my favourite.
Malcolm Folley has done a cracking job of creating a space for people to share their stories of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost in a way that instantly transports the reader back to those great battles of the 80s and 90s.
What’s even better is Folley speaks with a lot of team personnel, people in the background who we’ve not really heard of, and lets us know what it was really like to be on the ground as the battles took place out on the track.
So much has been made of Ayrton Senna over the years, that Prost’s version of events was somewhat overlooked – until now. And although he could have used the book as an opportunity to lay the boots into his rival, Prost does a brilliant job of relaying events as he saw them.
Le Professeur off the track as well as on it.

Murray Walker: Unless I’m Very Much Mistaken
Murray Walker is the voice of Formula 1. He has one of those voices that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you’re watching an old race and his enthusiasm for F1 jumps through the speakers.
Some artists use paints, some use pencils, Murray Walker used a microphone.
Walker is a quintessential storyteller, so once again this is a book that you will most likely read in his voice. He tells vivid stories about growing up, his time in the war, all the way through to the Murray Walker we know from our TV screens commentating on Formula 1.
Known for the odd gaff in the commentary box, Walker isn’t shy about having a laugh with it, and understands it helped endear him to fans over the years.
Unless I’m very much mistaken, this is a must-read book that you will thoroughly enjoy.

Niki Lauda – The Biography
If a book about a man who had a horrific crash at the wheel of a Formula 1 racing car, was given the last rights, then was back on the grid a month later doesn’t move you, then nothing will.
Niki Lauda was a man of little fuss or sentiment, and Maurice Hamilton has written this book in much the same vein. Starting from Lauda’s early days growing up in a proper family who felt motor racing was beneath their station, to his racing years, to flying, and much more.
If there is to be one criticism of this book, it’s that it doesn’t go into a great deal of detail on his time with Mercedes. However, the vivid recollections of his racing days from people who witnessed it definitely make up for this.

The Unknown Kimi Räikkönen
The Unknown Kimi Räikkönen gives great insights into Kimi’s path to F1, his upbringing, and now the importance of time with his growing family.
If you’re looking for a book of anecdotes from Kimi’s time in the paddock, this book isn’t it.
But if you want to learn more about Kimi’s path to F1, his motivation for quitting the sport, and his motivation for coming back to it.
The photos he shares are excellent too.

Aussie Grit: My Formula One Journey
This is one that most Australian’s will love, as the Aussie legend shares anecdotes or ‘yarns’ from his time in F1 racing against some of the best drivers on the planet.
Those who remember the ‘Multi 21’ saga and breakdown in the relationship with Sebastian Vettel will like this book, as Webber gives his version of the events that unfolded in front of our eyes on race days.
A highlight of this book is Webber walking us through his personal struggles, as it’s not something often associated with the stoic Australian. This book is brutally honest in parts, and will give you a deeper appreciation of the man, not just the driver.

The Mechanic: The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane
Marc ‘Elvis’ Priestley was one the number one mechanic at McLaren, who as well as this book has an incredible YouTube channel where he shares his insights and analysis of Formula 1 regularly.
Simply put, his book needs to be on the bookshelf of every Formula 1 fan, it’s that good.
I’ll admit I’d never really thought about the pit crew. We see them for a few seconds each race, maybe more if something dramatic happens to one of their drivers.
This book takes us well and truly behind the scenes, into the life of partying and fast-living away from the track.
Priestley also shares a lot of secrets about the rivalries he was part of during his time in F1, which may make him a little unpopular with a few people…

Chequered Conflict: The Inside Story on Two Explosive F1 World Championships
You could be forgiven for thinking this book by Maurice Hamilton is the work of a family member of Lewis Hamilton, but it’s not. Maurice Hamilton is the author of amazing F1 history books on the likes of James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart, Frank Williams, and more.
Grand Prix racing in 2007 and 2008 was an explosive affair between Ferrari and McLaren, and this book captures all the drama perfectly.
2007 was the first time since 1986 that three drivers had a chance of winning the title going into the final race, and this book puts you back on the edge of your seat again as you re-live this piece of F1 history.

The Mechanic’s Tale
This book by Steve Matchett is quite different to The Mechanic: The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane in that it is more about the author’s life, from trying desperately to break into the world of Formula 1. Although he’s not a racing driver, the struggles he faced are on par with some of the drivers mentioned in the books above.
Steve Matchett also shares a lot of his own eye-witness accounts of some of the greats such as Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, and Michael Schumacher. Plus there is a lot on his time with Benetton which is great reading.

Flat Out Flat Broke: The Original Stig
When you think of Formula 1, names like Lewis Hamilton, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jackie Stewart come to mind straight away, but what about Perry McCarthy? No? Didn’t think so.
McCarthy spent the 1992 Formula 1 season ‘racing’ for the Andrea Moda Formula team, but unfortunately, never qualified for a Grand Prix.
That hasn’t stopped him from writing a hilarious autobiography that has already become a motorsport best seller.
While he didn’t have much luck in F1, or in a lot of other things, McCarthy bounced back to become the first ‘Stig’ on TopGear.
If you want to share a story with someone you care about that will inspire them to chase their dreams and never give up, then this is the one to give them. They don’t even need to be a Formula 1 fan to enjoy this one.

Tagged by @misskyoh, @meyymuh and @sebs-blue-eyes Thanks guys!
Nickname(s): Don’t have one.
Zodiac: Pisces.
Height: I´m 1,66 m.
Time: 16:30
Favorite band/artist: so many! But if I had to pick one, that would be Ivan Torrent.
Song stuck in my head: that would be my own song because I like making music too, but that’s just for fun.
Last movie I saw: probably LOTR, the extended version, because I got my DVD’s back. I used to re-watch it every year, but a friend was not returning my DVD’s for around five years???
Last thing I googled: john elkann.
Other blogs: the-eyes-of-seb (only gifs and good pics of Seb’s eyes, with an emphasis on his eyelashes :)), seikki (most of the pics and gifs and videos of Seb and his ex-physio of 2012-2013)
Why this username?: because I first started using tumblr looking for writing tips and inspirations.
Following: 53 (some are inactive since years...) I’m very picky, I don’t like too much stuff on my dash that is not Seb related. Recently started to be more careless with my following and unfollowing.
Average amount of sleep: 8 hours. Proud of myself. Going to bed early, getting up very early. Morning person.
Lucky number: not sure if something like that exists. luck is random.
What I’m wearing: dark trousers and a cosy sweater because it’s sweater weather.
Dream job: making music or writing would be awesome, but I have no self-discipline.
Dream trips: haven’t thought about it... Would like to go for a trip to an F1 race again, perhaps, but only if Seb is winning.
Favorite food: I like eating in general, Italian food is great. But I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Canadian people for the maple syrup. This shit is so good!
Instruments I play: piano/keyboard.
Eye color: brown.
Hair color: Light brown? Taupe? It’s a weird colour that’s very common in Poland.
Aesthetics: hmm, food, autumn, mountains, dogs... stuff like that.
Languages I speak: I usually write, I don’t speak :))) My native language is Polish, so I’m quite good with this one. I think English would be second. I understand German and Italian. Had 2 semesters of French but no, thanks, that’s too much.
Most Iconic song: I can’t choose.
Random fact: I’m a lefty. As in left-handed. :)
I tag (feel free to ignore, I often do): @v3tt3i, @inappropriatestork and @simibutton.

Week 1 - The Creator Economy
This lecture was our first one back after the Christmas break, and within it we began to discuss the creator economy. We looked at what forms the creator economy and saw some previous examples of portfolio work that could be used for our assessments. We then listed our strengths and areas we were interested in as part of our ‘Creator Relatability Mapping’ that we could use in future sessions. My list was as follows:
Playing Piano - I play piano, and it is the main instrument I use for my music I release on streaming platforms (as JUST!JOSH).
Music Performance - I enjoy performing music, both as a solo artist, as well as in other settings such as bands, accompanists, musicals and improvisation
Composition - I love composing music, I want part of my career to be based around composition, as both TV/Film & Game’s composition, as well as other original instrumental work.
Music Arrangement - Arrangement is something I also really enjoy. I love creating instrumental sections to songs, and arranging my own versions of popular songs.
Eurovision - I am looking to become more involved within this area, as I have been a fan of the contest since 2013, and is an area I know a lot about.
Music Competitions - I enjoy music competitions and am looking to get involved with more like this in the near future.
Songwriting - This is an area of music I have only gained an interest in since lockdown, where I had time to develop some basic songwriting skills, but this is an area I am looking to develop further into the future.
Talking - I enjoy talking, mostly because I can’t help but waffle half the time, but I think it is a skill that I can put to good use through areas such as podcasting, radio and interviews
Meditation/ASMR/Binaural Beats - Have gotten into this over the last 2 years (and properly over the last few months) due to my Heart Arrhythmia caused by my Vagus Nerve misfiring (which I use to calm down & stop being as energetic), but the whole mediation and music therapy is something I want to invest more time into.
Football - I am a massive football fan, and I love watching and playing football. I have a long history of playing, including 2 appearances at The World Youth Cup. I would love to re-involve myself within football over the coming years.
Tennis - I both enjoy playing and coaching tennis. I am a Level 2 qualified Tennis Coach (having coached both voluntarily and paid since I was 11), and I currently play for the Uni’s Men’s 2nd Team.
F1/Motorsport, Handball, Cricket, Badminton - These are all sports I enjoy watching. I love watching sports in general, however these are the other main sports I enjoy watching other than Football & Tennis.
Music Teaching - I love teaching music, I have run music workshops in the past whilst at college, and I am looking to start teaching private music lessons on piano (and possibly keyboard) asap.
Video Games - I really enjoy (watching) video games, especially on sites such as YouTube and I was videos on games such as FIFA, Minecraft and other games to relax.
Podcasts - Over the last few months, I have really become interested in podcasts and podcasting, hoping to start my own into the future.
Comedy - I love comedy, I will always watch it when I feel in a bad mood, or when I want to relax with lunch or before bed.
Drinking - I’m a university student, this one is self-explanatory.
There are many other aspects that I enjoy, both in and out of music, however these are most of the main ones. We were also asked to read a document ready for next week’s lecture.
Off the back of this I started looking at ideas for my portfolio. After creating a podcast mini-series in the previous semester, I knew it was something I wanted to do more of. I had previously been researching into the idea of creating a Eurovision themed podcast, as I was interested in Eurovision, however I quickly discovered that I wouldn’t be able to do it as it would be too much effort alongside my studies. But, due to the nature of this module, I am able to go ahead with the idea. I decided I would spend this week conducting further research into the idea of creating a long standing weekly podcast series.

One part of the team success lies in the financial side. Money is gained by getting companies to sponsor the team and by getting good results in the races. The budget limits the quality of the driver and the other employees. Besides the driver the most important part of the athletic success comes from the used car. Like in the real world it needs to be constantly evolved and tuned. If the player doesn't want to do this part himself he can hire engineers which take this job on. This part of the game is played in several menus in a 1st person view which are reached by a main menu.
The actual race is shown in real time and 3D and can be watched with several camera angles. There the player can see if his preparations and pit stop strategies were useful. The preparations are optimisations referring to the course and the expected weather, e.g. using the right tires or fuel. Pit stop strategies can be changed during the race.
During the multiplayer mode the time which every player has to his disposal can be chosen freely. The game has no official licenses so all names are alienated but can be changed with the editor. Registered owners of the predecessor can buy an upgrade version for less money.
F1 Manager Professional is an excellent, comprehensive, and highly underrated F1 manager game by German developer Software 2000. The game lets you control every aspect of F1 team management, from manufacturing and financing, to race performance and even merchandising. Getting ahead in F1MP requires a skillful combination of business savvy and engineering know-how, because your goal is not only to take your team to the top, but also to make money while doing so.
A more advanced and improved version of Software 2000's earlier F1 Manager, this Professional version uses a user-friendly and intuitive icon-driven interface to navigate through the literally hundreds of menus, charts, models, and diagrams that give you all the information you need to plan an effective business and race strategy. There is a lot of text and variables you need to grasp, especially in the design and testing of race car models. The game uses excellent SVGA resolution to present all the menus and the actual racing action in flawless detail, down to the sponsor's advertising and background scenery. Beneath the polish lies an incredibly deep simulation that is sure to appeal to both the hardcore business simulation crowd and die-hard F1 fans. If you enjoy the likes of Grand Prix Manager but don't want to deal with business aspects, you can toggle off many micromanagement details that limit the game's scope. You can also choose from multiple difficulty settings and change most other variables that affect the game to suit your preferences and skills. This excellent customizability F1MP should appeal to both casual and hardcore gamers alike. All in all, F1MP is one of the most underrated titles you will ever come across - not only as a F1 manager sim, but even as a business simulation in general. If you are interested in professional sports management and want to play something a little different from the many soccer managers on the market, you definitely have to take a look at F1 Manager Professional.
F1 Management Professional is a strategy/simulation hybrid that challenges the user to manage, from the ground up, a Formula 1 racing team. German developer Software 2000 added this great sports game to the list of sports simulations in the late nineties.
To begin with, F1 Management Professional has an extended learning curve due to the high attention to detail required to succeed in the game. A user could play for years and still find new things to do and challenges to meet. Obviously, the game has great replay ability for that reason. It is very complex and users looking for an imitation of Pole Position or some other basic driving game need not apply here.
The goal of F1MP is the same as most games of this nature. The user's team must be successful in order to make more money. More money can be used to make the user's team still more successful. Some of the decisions that are place in the user's hands include: choosing a capable pilot for the car; testing different styles of car; enhancing the performance of the car through mechanical knowledge; manufacturing merchandise; and otherwise financing the team and the car. In order to be at all successful in F1MP, the user must not only have some business knowledge, but because he also does the job of the crew chief he needs to have some engineering skills, as well.

With such a complex system to learn, one might fear F1MP would present an insurmountable challenge, but the developers included a wonderfully intuitive and manageable user interface that takes you through each aspect of micromanagement cleanly and clearly. The interface is icon driven and presents all the charts, business models and other information very nicely. Moreover, for those gamers who are not seeking such a hardcore micro managerial experience, many of the game's aspects can be toggled off to become non-factors, making the game much simpler.
In short, F1 Management Professional is a great upgrade from F1 Management. The graphics are bright and colorful! At its finest, this game is a challenge and fun one, at that. Any sports or business simulation fanatic is going to love F1 Management Professional. I highly recommend downloading it!

After the drawing opens, the command line feedback shows a substituted font(s), such as 'Substituting [simplex.shx] for [archquik.shx]' and when looking at the Text Style dialog box, the font is indicated as missing. Note: In some drawings, the text will disappear because of missing fonts.
I know talking about styles in Word makes eyes glaze over but they are a really useful part of Word (plus Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
Today I watched an ‘experienced’ Word user reformatting a document. He laboriously worked through the document, selecting paragraphs, phrases and even individual words then clicking on the ribbon to change the look. It took 10 minutes or more. With styles it would have taken a few seconds.
Authors using Word for Mac 2016 will need to read the Word for Mac2016 User Guide. We have created video documentation to help you through tagging document header, body, and references. We've also provided a video which walks you through the template validation process.
If the font for Heading 1 is changed then the font for Heading 2 will also change due to style inheritance. In a standard Word document, styles can usually be traced back to some base Word styles like Normal and Default Paragraph Font (paragraph and character styles respectively).
Microsoft Word vs Apple Pages review Which is the best word processing option for iPad and iPhone: Microsoft Word or Apple Pages? Our Pages vs Word review tests both iPad and iPhone text editors.
There are typically 2 factors that might create this result. The first is that you do not have WORD set to use the Adobe PDF printer when you are printing (though I do not think this is the issue).
Re: Font spacing goes haywire when Word document is saved to PDF Bill@VT Sep 4, 2011 2:19 AM ( in response to ghumdinger ) Try changing to the press or print job settings before creating the PDF.
Styles have been around for all of Word’s history. They have changed and expanded over the years but the fundamentals are the same.
In this article we’ll explain the different types of styles including at least one that sneaked in without many people noticing. From just one type in the early days of Word, there’s five different style types in Word 2007, Word 2010 and Word 2013.
What is a Style?
A style is a collection of formatting instructions put under a single name.
For example ‘Heading 1’ has these default values in Word 2013 (choose Heading 1 style, right-click and choose ‘Modify Style’.
So ‘Heading 1’ means Cambria font, 14pt, Bold with a color setting, Left justified, 1.15 line spacing and 24pt line space before the text, plus other settings.
Instead of having to apply all those separate formatting options for each main heading, just apply the ‘Heading 1’ style.
Even better, if you decide to change the look of the headings, change the ‘Heading 1’ settings and all the headings with that style will be changed automatically.
Paragraph and Character styles
There are different types of style that can be applied to different parts of a document. Originally there were only Paragraph styles – styles you could apply to an entire paragraph.
That was OK but no help if you wanted consistent formatting for words in a paragraph like a product name Office-Watch.com or just emphasis.
So Microsoft added character styles. These are styles that can be applied to a word or even a single letter. A character style could be called ‘Product Name’ to ensure all references to a product or service look consistent.
Character styles have all the attributes of paragraph styles that are applicable to individual characters. Things like font, size, color, bold, italic etc are in both character and paragraph styles. Line spacing, Left/Right/Center/Justify etc. can only apply to entire paragraphs.
Adding character styles created a new problem. Microsoft discovered that users sometimes had two styles with the same name – one as a paragraph style, the other as a character style. Or people would have two styles such as ‘QuoteP’ and QuoteC’ with the same settings, one for paragraphs and another for word/characters.
Linked styles
So Word 2007 introduced ‘Linked Styles’ which act as both a paragraph style and character style, depending on the situation.
A linked style acts like a paragraph style when a paragraph/s is selected and the style applied.
It acts like a character style when less than a paragraph (a character/word/phrase) is selected and the style applied.
Gone is the need for ‘twin’ styles – now you can have a single style that can applied to any text in a document.
The best example of a linked style is already in Word 2007 or later. All the Heading styles were changed to linked styles. Here’s an example of ‘Heading 1’ style used as both a paragraph and character style at the same time.
Both the paragraph and words were changed to the same style by selecting them and pressing the ‘Heading 1’ shortcut Ctrl + Alt + 1 . The Style Gallery or styles list could have been used to do the same thing.
In the Modify Style dialog you’ll see the style type just under the name.
‘Linked’ isn’t the best choice of terms for this type of style. Most styles are already ‘linked’ to others through style inheritance. ‘Merged’ or ‘Combined’ might have been clearer to most people – but we’re stuck with ‘Linked’.
Which is which?
On the styles list, the three types of style have their own markers.
The lower case ‘a’ next to a character style.
The ‘backwards P’ or Pilcrow is used as an end of paragraph mark in Word and also serves to denote a Paragraph style.
The combined pilcrow and a is, unsurprisingly, for a linked style.
A detailed and independent look at Windows 10, especially for Microsoft Office.
Fully up-to-date with coverage of the May 2019 major update of Windows 10.
This918 page book shows you important features and details for all serious Windows 10 users.
Alas, the Style Gallery on the ribbon isn’t as clear. Among various (ignored) complaints about the Style Gallery is the inconsistent marking.
Paragraph styles (e.g. Normal, Pictures etc.) have the pilcrow next to the style name.
Linked paragraphs (Heading styles etc.) have no marking next to the name.
But neither do the character styles! In the above image there’s no way to know that ‘Subtle Emphasis’ is a character style.
Inheritance
A brief mention of style inheritance.
Styles are normally based on an existing style so only changes from the inherited style need to be made. This lets you apply broader changes to a document a lot faster.
For example, here’s settings for Heading 2
Heading 2 is based on the Heading 1 style, so all the settings for Heading 1 are linked into Heading 2 as a starting point.
The settings like ’13pt, Not Bold …’ etc. are only the differences between Heading 1 and what’s been changed to the look for Heading 2.
If the font for Heading 1 is changed then the font for Heading 2 will also change due to style inheritance.
In a standard Word document, styles can usually be traced back to some base Word styles like Normal and Default Paragraph Font (paragraph and character styles respectively). However you can create a style ‘from scratch’ with no inheritance. Here’s the same Heading 2 style with the ‘Style based on’ removed.
Now you can see all the formatting attributes in detail.
Unlinking styles might seem like a good idea that makes things simpler, but experienced Word users almost never do it. Style inheritance can be a nuisance at times, but its more helpful than a hindrance.
What’s going on?
Sometimes the formatting can get confusing. What’s a paragraph setting, what’s a character style and what is directly applied with no style? WordPerfect had a ‘Reveal Codes’ feature which Microsoft resisted copying but finally added to Word.
There’s two options for exposing what Word is up to. The Style Inspector (Word 2007 and later) and Reveal Formatting. Here’s both in action side-by-side.
As you can see the Style Inspector is a small box that can be dragged around the screen. Open the Style Inspector from the button at the bottom of the Styles pane:
Reveal Formatting has a lot more detail and sits in the right-hand pane. There’s a button for Reveal Formatting on the Style Inspector box.
The Shift + F1 shortcut will open the Reveal Formatting pane. This shortcut has worked since Word 2002 (XP).
Table and List styles
Also added in Word 2007 were two more styles.
Table styles, let you group together all the many formatting options for tables.
Similarly, all the options for list formatting were a nightmare until Word 2007 when List Styles were introduced. Now all the, sometimes complex, choices for lists (numbering, indenting at each level) can be more easily and consistently applied.

Symptoms
Word For Mac 2016 Font Issues Jan 2018 Calendar
When you use Microsoft Office programs, you notice that visual features differ from one computer to another. For example, you see animations in Excel when you scroll through a worksheet on one computer, but you do not see the same animations on another computer.
Additionally, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms that reduce the functionality of an Office program:
Quark 2016 Font Issues
An Office program is blurry.
Your screen flickers or flashes.
An Office program is either mostly all white or all black.
Text in your document is not displayed well.
Your Office program crashes.
The performance of an Office program (other than startup and shutdown) is reduced.
In Microsoft Lync, there may be video delays or slowness when you are on a video call.
Cause
You may experience these symptoms if you have a video configuration on your computer that is incompatible with the Office feature set that is responsible for displaying the application and for animations in the application.
Office 2013 and later versions use a more efficient and accelerated method to draw the Office UI and the content. This includes relying on hardware acceleration, which is managed through the operating system. The hardware acceleration function of the operating system relies on up-to-date and compatible display drivers.
Note Hardware acceleration that uses the video card is always disabled when Office is running in a Remote Desktop session, and also when the application is started in safe mode.
Resolution
The resolution varies depending on your version of Windows and the symptom you are experiencing.
For the symptom: Poorly Displayed Text in Office Documents
If your symptom is 'Poorly Displayed Text in Office Documents,' try the following solutions first. Otherwise, skip to the next section titled All Other Symptoms.
Step 1: Use the 'ClearType Text Tuner' Setting
Search for ClearType.
Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8: On the Start Screen, search for ClearType.
Windows 7: Click Start, and then enter ClearType in the Search Programs and Files box.
Select Adjust ClearType Text.
In the ClearType Text Tuner, enable the Turn on ClearType option, and then click Next.
Tune your monitor by following the steps in the ClearType Text Tuner, and then click Finish.
If you are still experiencing a problem after you adjust the ClearType settings, go to Step 2.
Step 2: Disable the Sub-Pixel Positioning Feature
Word 2016 and Word 2013 use sub-pixel text rendering by default. While this provides optimal spacing, you may prefer the appearance of pixel-snapped text for a minor improvement in contrast. To disable the sub-pixel positioning feature in Word 2016 or Word 2013, follow these steps.
On the File tab, click Options.
Click Advanced.
Under the Display group, clear the Use the subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen option.
Click OK.
If you are still experiencing a problem after you turn off the sub-pixel text rendering setting, re-enable the Use the subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen setting, and then go to Step 3.
Step 3: On Windows 7 clients, install the Windows 8 Inter-operatibility Pack
If you are using Windows10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, skip this section and go to the steps under the For All Other Symptoms section.
If you are using Windows 7, install the update for improving video-related components that is available in the following Knowledge Base article:
2670838 Platform update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
If the previous steps did not resolve the 'Poorly Displayed Text in Office Documents' symptom, continue to troubleshoot your issue by using the steps in the next section.
For all other symptoms
Update your video driver
The best way to update your video driver is to run Windows Update to see whether a newer driver is available for your computer.
To run Windows Update based on your version of Windows, follow these steps:
Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 8
On the Start Screen, click Settings on the Charms Bar.
Click Change PC Settings.
In the PC settings app, click Windows Update.
Click Check for updates now.
If updates are available, click the driver that you want to install, and then click Install.
Windows 7
Click Start.
Type Windows Update in the Search programs and files box.
In the search results, click Check for updates.
If updates are available, click the driver that you want to install, and then click Install.
If your video-related problems in Office were fixed by when you updated your video driver, you do not have to take any further steps. Go to step 2 if updating the video driver does not fix the problems.
Note
Word For Mac 2016 Font Issues Jan 2018 Printable Calendar
Video card manufacturers frequently release updates to their drivers to improve performance or to fix compatibility issues with new programs. If you do not find an updated video driver for your computer through Windows Update and must have the latest driver for your video card, go to the support or download section of your video card manufacturer's website for information about how to download and install the newest driver.
More Information
Automatic disabling of hardware acceleration for some video cards
By default, hardware acceleration is automatically disabled in Office programs if certain video card and video card driver combinations are detected when you start an Office program. If hardware acceleration is automatically disabled by the program, nothing indicates that this change occurred. However, if you update your video card driver and it is more compatible with Office, hardware acceleration is automatically reenabled.
The list of video card/video driver combinations that trigger this automatic disabling of hardware graphics acceleration is not documented because the list is hard-coded in the Office programs and will be constantly changing as we discover additional video combinations that cause problems in Office programs. Therefore, if you do not see the same animation functionality on one computer that you see on another computer, we recommend that you update your video driver by using the instructions provided in the 'Update your video driver' section. If you still do not see the expected animation on your computer, update your video driver again soon. Microsoft is working with the major video card manufacturers on this issue, and these video card manufacturers will be releasing new video drivers as such drivers are developed.
Note
If two computers have the same video card/video driver combinations, you may still see a difference in the Office animation features between the two computers if one computer is running Windows 7 and the other computer is running Windows 8. On a computer that is running Windows 7, animations in Office are disabled if the video card/video driver combination appears on the incompatibility list. However, the same video combination on Windows 8 does not have animations disabled because of the improved video capabilities in Windows 8.

F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 14 - South Korea
It's Winter break and I am FINALLY picking back up my 2023 watch through (given how it's December, I probably won't finish this before 2024, but that's okay!).
This is another one I watched live at the time at my friend's house, and my main memory apart from Seb winning is Mark Webber's car having an alternator failure and then going on fire (right after his Singapore last lap DNF which, ouch) and Nico Rosberg having a very sparky front wing. iirc Jenson had an alright race and scored points, though I cannot recall how Lewis did, so let's jump in!
Once again saying how much of a core memory the old F1 intro is
and also asking why can't F1 provide alternate commentary options, why must Crofty and Brundle be forced upon us 😭
On a more practical note, I never knew why this race was officially called the Korean GP instead of the South Korean GP
But Yeongam was a fun track even if the layout looked a bit odd.
Alrighty: Starting grid whiplash time! SEWIS FRONT ROW!!!! (this is for meeeeee) Grosjean P3 and Rosberg P4 Jenson P11 and Jev down in P16
[Formation Lap]: Almost everyone on the super soft tyres apart from Ricciardo who's on the mediums
and immediately cut to the mad rush of mechanics and engineers running back to the garages
huh, so today I learned that no one is allowed to sit on the pitwall at the race start in case there's an on-track incident. I really feel like I should have known this before now 😅
[Start/Lap 1]: Seb has in Seb fashion just shot off into the distance
CARNAGE
One of the Ferrari's got tagged, someone else span round, turn 3 was like a dodgems rink
right before all that happened Grosjean overtook Lewis and is in P2
[Lap 2]: But Seb is already 2 seconds ahead of P2. Just GOAT things.
[Lap 3]: Now 2.6 seconds 👑 (When Seb dominates in a Red Bull it's sexy, when anyone else does the same it's not - hope that helps x)
The Top 5 after the lap 1 nonsense is Seb, Grosjean, Lewis, Nico R and Hulkenberg.
[Lap 4]: Jenson has minor front wing damage 😭
ooh cut to Raikkonen and Ricciardo scrapping over 7th
and now Jenson has to come in for a new front wing 😭😭😭
it's apparently affecting his brake temps, fml
Okay start replay: oh my days the field was five wide before the braking zone for turn 3 no wonder that there was dodgems.
[Lap 6]: I'm starting to wonder if I mis-remembered Nico's front wing failing and sparking along the track. I'm sure it was at this Korean GP bc I remember my friend being so upset over it
[Lap 7]: JENSON FASTEST LAP!!!!!!!
Though this was years before getting the fastest lap was worth a point, but it's worth a point in my heart
[Lap 8]: Cars starting to make their first pit stops
[Lap 9]: Back to Seb fastest lap, he's over three seconds ahead of P2
Meanwhile Lewis just got told to push before his first stop
[Lap 10]: And in he comes for stop number 1! Super softs off for Mediums, he comes out in P9
So according to Ted the two stop is actually quicker, but the cars that have stopped already are likely going to have to do the three stop. inch resting.
[Lap 11]: And saying that, Grosjean comes in to cover Lewis, and comes out juuuust ahead
[Lap 12]: And in comes Seb! Also putting on the mediums
but we need to cut back to the Lewis & Grosjean battle bc it was getting spicy
And a Lewis fastest lap for funsies 🥰
[Lap 13]: He's now 8 tenths behind Grosjean
[Lap 16]: Hmm, there is not much happening
I am enjoying watching the cars go round though, but then again that's just me 😅
Saying that, Hulkenberg is leading a train of Alonso, Raikkonen and Webber from 6th-9th.
oh it's a DRS train before we called it a DRS train
[Lap 18]: And Rosberg gets past Ricciardo for 4th
[Lap 20]: Jenson, who's in P9, is apparently not having a fun time with his tyres
Meanwhile Fernando is trying very hard to break through past Hulkenberg
sadly it's not happening
[Lap 22]: And *another* Seb fastest lap
I do love it when he collects them like pokemon
[Lap 23]: Jenson pits again :(
tbf it would be very on brand for me to deliberately forget if Jenson had a bad race
[Lap 24]: Breaking News: Fernando has still not gotten past Hulkenberg
I am starting to remember this part of the race and I'm pretty sure Hulkenberg does end up finishing in 5th
"Right front is destroyed" "I've been through the graining phase, and it's dead" the precursors to 'Bono my tyres are gone'. Lewis also sounds painfully done on the radio 😭😭😭
[Lap 26]: and there's a somewhat stranded Force India in the barriers.
oof Di Resta had a slow spin into the barriers after getting on the kerbs
[Lap 28]: Meanwhile Lewis is painfully slow compared to everyone else
Ah ha! There's Rosberg's front wing failure (not that I was wishing ill on him, more well done me for remembering correctly)
He was about to pass Lewis on the straight when the nose of the car just dropped down.
And it is now trailing on the ground putting sparks everywhere
[Lap 29]: So either by choice or circumstance Lewis wasn't able to get past Nico while he was driving slowly with his borked front wing.
"When are you gonna call me in man these tyres are fucked?" Lewis' very not fun Korean GP
[Lap 30]: and he FINALLY pits for another set of mediums
the race is 55 laps long so he should in theory make it to the end
[Lap 31]: FUCK Perez's tyre just failed
I do NOT want anymore Silverstone flashbacks, that was not fun
The whole tread of the tyre just ripped itself off the canvas while he was going down the straight, NOT GOOD
[Lap 32]: Very understandably we have a safety car
"And Pirelli are here to inspect the remnants of their tyre, not that there is much" Ted Kravitz committing murders live on air since 2013.
Well I have to say that certainly spiked up my blood pressure, it's the fact that Perez just happened to be in the camera shot when it happened.
[Lap 33]: So while we have the SC, the current top 5 is: Seb, Grosjean, Raikkonen, Lewis and Hulkenberg
[Lap 34]: Cut to a probably quite stressed Pirelli engineer in the Merc Garage looking over someone's shoulder
[Lap 35]: Shoutout to Webber, who had to pit again for running over the debris from Perez's car so dropped down to P11, and was given a set of super softs because Red Bull did not have any mediums left
You can see why he went over to WEC
[Lap 36]: And we're back racing!
[Lap 37]: Thankfully for my nerves all clean through turns 1 and 2
...
and then there was turn 3
Sutil divebombed into Webber, who's car is now on fire.
Don't cut to the depressed RBR mechanics 😭
also WHERE ARE THE FIRE MARSHALLS?!
okay there they are
oh now we have Lotus on Lotus violence
and.... there's a fire car on the track??????
aaaaand safety car again.
[Lap 38]: Well... Lap 37 chose far, far too much violence
That was certainly a sequence of events
right before all that happened, Hulkenberg overtook Lewis for P4
so I'm not having a fun time
[Lap 39]: Good news: they put out Webber's car, bad news: it looks like a wreck
iirc Japan was seven days after Korea so yeah, a very not fun time for the mechanics who needed to fix that
[Lap 41]: And we're racing again. Boys I beg of you NO NONSENSE
Turn 3 I am watching you like a hawk
Lewis and Fernando are scrapping over P5
Jenson sighting!!!! he's in P7
[Lap 42]: Meanwhile Seb is still leading out front, by almost 2 seconds this time
[Lap 43]: So the top 5 is: Seb, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Hulkenberg and Lewis
[Lap 44]: Grosjean's been given the all clear to race Raikkonen for P2 🍿
[Lap 45]: Breaking news: Lewis is still behind Hulkenberg
but in actual news we have FIVE cars fighting over 10th
Maldonado, Guiterrez, Massa, Perez and Bottas
and I legit cannot keep up with who is where they're chopping and chaning so fast
[Lap 46]: Okay it's Massa (P10), Gutierrez, Checo, Valtteri and Maldonado
Make that Perez now in P11
that was a great battle though!!!
[Lap 47]: Lewis is very close to Hulkenberg...
...but still doesn't get past through turn 3
[Lap 48]: LEWIS IS INTO P4!!!!
...nvm Hulkenberg got back past on the second straight
And Fernando was very briefly in P5 but Lewis managed to hold fim
[Lap 49]: Bless at least the Sauber team are having fun
[Lap 50]: Lotus telling Grosjean that he can overtake Kimi but Romain saying he can't???? Team Enstone doing Team Enstone things
Massa and Perez under investigation for causing a collision, fellas...
At least Seb has a 4 second lead
[Lap 51]: 5 laps remaining klaxon!!
[Lap 52]: slow-mo shot of Seb's tyres, his front right does not look pretty
which was the same tyre that went on Perez's car
[Lap 53]: Lewis asking on the radio if anyone has suggestions for how to get past Hulkenberg. idk if Merc can gaslight, gatekeep girlboss their way out of this one
And Rosberg takes P8 from Jenson
[Lap 54]: uh no not another yellow flag
oop, Ricciardo's car decided to stop working
[Lap 55]: FINAL LAP!!
Lewis has properly closed up to Hulkenberg 👀
and Fernando has closed up to the back of Lewis
and SEB WINS THE SOUTH KOREAN GP!!!!! 🥳🍾
(gosh I've missed a driver sounding happy over the radio when they win)
The rest of the top 10: Raikkonen P2, Grosjean P3, Hulkenberg P4, Lewis P5, Fernando P6, Rosberg P7, Jenson P8, Massa P9 and Perez P10
lol at me saying Jenson has a nice race when he Did Not. But Lewis finish in the top 5 so that was positive bc I really had no recollection of how he did. Seb goated as per, and Lap 37 owes me financial compensation for all that nonsense.
Next race - Japan!

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium — Sebastian Vettel made a crucial early overtaking move on Lewis Hamilton to win the crash-marred Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday and trim his rival’s overall lead.
Hamilton started from pole position for a record fifth time at Spa, and a record-extending 78th in Formula One, with Vettel second on the grid.
But Vettel has a knack for quick starts, and nudged his Ferrari past Hamilton’s Mercedes on the first lap with a smart move down the left.
“I had a great start. I knew my chance would come,” Vettel said. “Timing is crucial and I managed that perfectly I thought.”
It came moments after Fernando Alonso’s McLaren flew through the air and landed on top of Charles Leclerc’s Sauber. Leclerc, unharmed, was likely spared a head injury by the protective halo device surrounding the cockpit area of F1 cars.

Vettel finished about 12 seconds clear of Hamilton, with Red Bull driver Max Verstappen an impressive third after starting seventh.
Vettel’s 52nd career win closes the gap to Hamilton to 17 points heading into next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza — Ferrari’s home.
Montreal’s Lance Stroll finished 13th.

Moments after his victory, Vettel removed his steering wheel and held it aloft, almost like a trophy, as he stood on his car to celebrate. Then he jumped into the arms of his mechanics and grabbed a Ferrari flag. With eight races remaining, it was a crucial win to halt Hamilton’s momentum.

It also moved Vettel one ahead of four-time F1 champion Alain Prost for third in all-time wins behind Hamilton (67) and Michael Schumacher (91).
“He drove past me like I wasn’t even there on the straight,” Hamilton said, expressing concern for Ferrari’s greater speed. “Congratulations to Seb.”
Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas, starting near the back after being penalized for too many engine changes, overtook Sergio Perez late on to place fourth.
Vettel’s Ferrari teammate, Kimi Raikkonen, and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo both retired.
Hamilton initially held his lead, but Vettel overtook him sharply as they headed onto the Kemmel Straight. Vettel then held off Perez, who had jumped up from fourth to third by overtaking his Racing Point Force India team teammate Esteban Ocon.
The heavy crash at the start happened when Hulkenberg bumped into the back of Alonso, sending Alonso’s McLaren spinning and then flying up in the air.
It led to a safety car coming out on track.
Under safety car rules, drivers have to hold position and are not allowed to accelerate.
Starting from sixth place, Raikkonen lost his rear right tire after being clipped by Ricciardo — who retired later after running a lap down because of time he lost while his team repaired the damage on his car picked up during the chaotic start.
Vettel has been sloppy recently, crashing in the rain while leading the German GP and then losing position in qualifying for the Hungarian GP, once again in the rain.
This time the rain stayed away, and Vettel looked more composed.
When the race re-started, on lap 4 of 44, the German driver smartly blocked an overtaking attempt by Hamilton.
“I had a great re-start, I kept it clean,” Vettel said. “After that it was a very smooth race.”
Verstappen, meanwhile, displayed his usual slick overtaking by getting past Ocon and making light work of catching Perez to move into third — delighting the orange-clad Dutch fans congregated around the 7-kilometre (4.3-mile) Spa track nestled in the Ardennes forest.
Raikkonen was the previous Ferrari driver to win here, back in 2009, but his quest for a first F1 win since the season-opening Australian GP in 2013 ended with a mechanical failure on lap 9 — the third time the Finnish driver has failed to finish this season.
Up ahead, his teammate led Hamilton by 3.5 seconds at the halfway stage, when Hamilton pitted for new tires.
Vettel came in moments later and his stop was clean enough to see him regain the lead, but only a narrow 1.3 seconds ahead of Hamilton.
Ferrari’s greater speed on the straights helped him pad that advantage out within a few laps, and he coasted home.
Both drivers have five wins this season as they seek to win a fifth F1 title and move level with Argentine great Juan Manuel Fangio, and move within two of Schumacher’s all-time record.

F1 2018 review: making headlines for all the right reasons
New Post has been published on https://www.etechwire.com/f1-2018-review-making-headlines-for-all-the-right-reasons/
F1 2018 review: making headlines for all the right reasons
The sport of Formula One is a world of glamour, cutting-edge technology and high-octane drama. When we watch Lewis Hamilton and co do battle wheel-to-wheel at speeds of over 200mph, we only see half the story. We don’t see the hours of development, fitness work and media interactions that go into making the modern F1 driver. And as much as the TV cameras can give us an insight into what happens behind the scenes, only a videogame can put us directly into that fast-paced world and let you live the life of an F1 driver.
Enter F1 2018
Since taking over from Studio Liverpool in 2009, Codemasters have overall had a strong track record (no pun intended) with the F1 license. Last year’s F1 2017 was arguably the best F1 game Codemasters had ever made, and a strong contender for best F1 console game of all time. So in lieu of this and the fact that annual sports games can often struggle to innovate year-on-year, can the latest instalment live up to the hype?
Short answer: yes. Long answer: yes, definitely.
Let’s tackle the basics first. Spoiler alert: F1 2018 is a racing game. And any racing game with rubbish handling is doomed to fail no matter what other features it has. Thankfully, F1 2018 delivers on that front with a driving experience that balances hardcore simulation with pick-up-and-play accessibility. Traditionally this is an area Codemasters have always excelled in, and the current iteration adds refined chassis physics with more detailed suspension and tyre modelling.
The former is especially noticeable when playing on a steering wheel; bouncing over kerbs gives far more feedback through the wheel and is more likely to cause a loss of stability and a very ugly crash. Other additions such as a manually controllable Energy Recovery System serve to simulate real-life aspects of Formula One more than ever. But whether you are a casual player or veteran sim racer, you’ll still be able to jump in to F1 2018 and have a good time right off the bat.
The competition is tougher than ever
You’ll also have a stern challenge to contend with – the AI opponents are more aggressive than ever. They throw blocks, make bold overtakes, and fight for every inch of road with both the player and other CPU drivers. It makes every battle for position an intense white-knuckle scrap. Not quite Dark Souls on wheels, but certainly a far stiffer test than previous F1 games. Naturally this does mean an increased chance of things going very wrong and your race ending in a tire barrier, but the ubiquitous Flashback feature means you can pull a Prince of Persia and pretend that spectacular 160mph pile-up never happened.
Complementing the re-tooled gameplay are some genuinely gorgeous visual effects. The graphics themselves are largely unchanged from 2017; instead the devil is in the detail. Shimmering heat haze. Dust kicked up off the road. Mist. Fog. True-to-life depth of field. It all contributes to perhaps the most realistic-looking F1 game we’ve ever seen – some of the preview screens genuinely looked like stills from TV broadcasts.
This does come at a cost, however. On our review copy, pre and post-race cutscenes would often tank the framerate hard, and one particular podium celebration froze and crashed the game completely. Given we were playing on a regular PS4, it could be an optimisation issue and the PS4 Pro‘s upgraded hardware can deal with the workload better. And thankfully, the actual races ran smoothly at 60FPS in all weather conditions, so the core gameplay was unaffected.
Career mode
Now let’s tackle the big one; career mode. It’s what most Codemasters F1 games are built around – it’s no coincidence that F1 2015, the game regarded as the worst of the series, was the one that did away with Career Mode altogether. By contrast, F1 2018 provides the most richly immersive career mode we’ve yet seen in F1 console gaming. Not since F1 2010 have we seen quite as much interaction with NPCs in settings away from the racetrack – and crucially, it all matters.
Claire the pit reporter is a recurring character who will interview you at various moments each weekend, and what you say to her can have various affects. Each answer will directly influence your character and reputation, earning points towards either Sportsmanship or Showmanship. Are you a solid team player? You’re the former. Are you a brash personality who shoots from the hip? You’re the latter. Additionally everything you say will have consequences – expect a frosty reception from your engine department if you go off on a rant about how slow the car is in a straight line.
And when it comes time for contract negotiations, all of this will be taken into account. It can feel very Dragon’s Den when you tell a prospective team boss that you’re the best thing since sliced bread, only for them to turn around and lowball you with a meagre offer. Throw in a refined upgrade system, and F1 2018’s Career Mode is nearing full-blown RPG status at this point. Short of Yakuza-style minigames involving partying on yachts in Monaco, it’s hard to imagine what else they can add to flesh out their world further. We’re not far off Mass Effect: F1 Edition, and that is an incredible achievement on Codemasters’ part.
Outside of Career Mode, Championships mode offers plenty of varied challenges to just dive into, and the roster of historic cars is beefed up nicely with each new car adding its own gameplay challenges. Powersliding around in James Hunt’s championship-winning McLaren re-enacting scenes from the 2013 movie Rush is endlessly fun and contrasts nicely with the more modern cars, like the 2003 Williams and its screaming V10 engine. As for multiplayer, the addition of a Super License system and ranked lobbies which reward players for clean racing should make it easier to find a fun, competitive experience online away from griefers and Max Verstappen wannabes.
Verdict: play it now
Using last year’s game as a jumping-off pad, F1 2018 is a game made with a genuine passion and love for the real sport of Formula One. And it shows in every aspect. For motorsport fans, it’s a wonderful recreation of what we see on television every weekend. For sim racers, it’s a fun racing experience with plenty of challenge and replayability. And for gamers in general, it’s an engaging world to dive into and immerse yourself in.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to negotiate a deal to replace Fernando Alonso. I think I’ve got a pretty good chance…

WEEKEND TV HOT FILM PICKS!
Check out my guide to the top films on TV this weekend, best of the rest and what to avoid at all costs. Enjoy!
LATE FRIDAY 24th NOVEMBER
HOT PICKS!
More4 @ 2100     Rush (2013) *****
Tumblr media
You may see this film advertised on TV and think it’s not for you as you are not really a big fan of Formula 1…STOP. This film transcends a simple “sports film” and is a fantastic film for all. It’s a biography of F1 champion Nikki Lauda, specifically around the 1976 F1 season, focusing on the intense relationship between himself and arch rival James Hunt, we see the highs and the lows of one of the most competitive relationships in sporting history. Ron Howard has pulled out all the stops here and created something quite amazing, packed full of emotion, with characters you can really feel, combined with some of the best action facing sequences I’ve seen for a long time - Rush is a great success. Sit down, strap in and hold on tight.
Horror @ 0220     Let the Right One In (2008) *****
Tumblr media
This is my favourite film of 2009 (UK release date). This amazing vampire drama from Sweden did suffer the indignity of a U.S remake “Let Me In” - but luckily they somehow pulled that one off - but here’s the original in all its glory. A thoroughly engrossing and touching film based on a superb book. Watch this! 5 Stars. It’s a dark love story set in Sweden. The bleak and snowy back drop compliments the pace and mood of the film. The sound, direction and acting are all perfect. I find it very difficult to find fault with any part of it. The relationship that is built between our two young lead actors is simply fascinating to watch, there’s so much realism. This is a tender and touching film but also subtly horrifying. The end of this film will stay with me for a long time. So much is said with so few words. It really leaves a mark on you. A truly great film.
Best of the rest:
TCM @ 2100     Kill Bill Vol 1 (2003) *****
C4 @ 0005        Boyhood (2014) *****
ITV3 @ 0030     The Theory of Everything (2014) ****
TCM @ 2310     Goodfellas (1990) *****
Film4 @ 2310    Aliens (1986) *****
***SO BAD IT'S GOOD!***
Film4 @ 0215 Piranha DD (2012) * SO BAD IT'S GOOD!
Tumblr media
I expected awful and even potentially unwatchable. I saw the reviews and prepared myself that I could even be angry with how bad this film would be... but would you believe it, it's not as bad as the majority say. This is a B-Movie that knows exactly what it is, doesn't apologise and really doesn't care. It makes no attempt to cover up its shortcomings, it uses them to its advantage. Don't get me wrong, this film isn't great, it's not even good but it just about squeezes in enough gratuitous wobbling body parts, awful jokes, ridiculous death scenes and, most importantly, appearances from Gary Busey and David Hasselhoff to make this throw away comedy better than you've read about in the press. If everyone understood this films place as well as its makers did, I think it would get a little less horrendous panning.
***AVOID AT ALL COSTS!***
W @ 2100    Dark Shadows (2012) * AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Tumblr media
Dark Shadows marks a definitive end to my patience for the continuing dross being offered from the Burton / Depp camp. I fail to actually see who this film was supposed to be for. If it's for adults it's far too childish, if it's for kids there is far too much innuendo and sexual themes. I personally think it's was for Burton himself who seems to know he can somehow churn out whatever tickles his fancy and still get paid. Very disappointing indeed.
SATURDAY 25th NOVEMBER
HOT PICKS!
C4 @ 2100      Ex Machina (2014) *****
Tumblr media
I can't believe this was Alex Garland's directorial debut. He was the writer on 28 days Later and Sunshine - so here's his directorial debut and it's unmissable. It's hard to even think this is his first film at the helm. The film oozes beauty in every shot - the clinical setting and awesome camera work produce some fantastic visuals in what is in essence a very tight and small set with 3 main characters in the most part. Ex Machina is one of the best Sci-Fi films to come out in recent years. It follows Domhnall Gleeson as Caleb, a 26 year old coder for the world’s largest internet company. He wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain retreat of the company CEO - Nathan (Oscar Issac). Nathan is a recluse and the social interactions between the two are fascinating. Caleb finds out that he is to participate in an experiment interacting with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl played by Alicia Vikander. This is true Sci-Fi. It could very easily be set right now. It's only a matter of time before one of the big players launch something truly stunning. Thought provoking, brilliantly story telling that keeps your eyes glued to each interaction and the wonderful script wraps its way right through you. It lingers long after the credits roll. Don't miss this. Look out for the trailer for his next step into Sci-Fi that I for one am very excited about… Annihilation.
Horror @ 2100     The Descent (2005) *****
Tumblr media
The best British Horror film of the noughties. Neil Marshall’s superb Brit Shock Horror “The Descent” is chilling, creepy and full of suspense. It’s packed full of shocks, not just run of the mill cheap tricks, these are great shocks, perfectly timed with fantastic twists. This was just what the genre needed. It withstands multiple watches and has become a firm favourite of mine. If all else fails… Stick The Descent on.
A group of young women go on a caving expedition that goes horribly wrong and they soon become lost in an uncharted cave system. As panic escalates they come across some strange and very dangerous creatures. Here begins a fight for survival. This is a very accomplished Horror that excels in all aspects; the relatively unknown cast are all superb and help along the back story nicely. The cinematography is second to none, capturing all the awkward angles of the confined spaces as well as the vast open space of the caves; the story is wonderfully layered and is excellently told. This certainly is NOT a cheap teen horror. Neil Marshall hit our radar with his 2002 debut “Dog Soldiers” which was a lot of fun and showed a lot of talent, but in 2005, he had obviously honed his skills and produced this dark, bloody and claustrophobic Horror with a fantastic story line. It has some beautifully executed twists that will stick in your mind for a long while. From the very off this film is set at full speed and rarely lets up - every time your adrenalin begins to drop you are thrown back into heart stopping tension and fantastic frights that all add up to one of the great Horrors of modern times. If you like Horror… Love this.
Best of the rest:
Film4 @ 1300     Field of Dreams (1989) *****
ITV2 @ 1850       Inception (2010) *****
TCM @ 2100      Goodfellas (1990) *****
ITV4 @ 2300       Full Metal Jacket (1987) *****
SUNDAY 26th NOVEMBER
HOT PICKS!
Sony @ 1630     Another Earth (2011) ****
Tumblr media
Through all the improbabilities and implausible ideas in this elaborate work of fiction, Mike Cahill brings us a subtle, affecting and intimate story that takes place as we discover another planet, another Earth, getting closer and closer to our planet. An exact replica. This huge and admittedly outrageous Sci-Fi concept is merely a sub plot to the main event - It is a story of how two people meet and how their relationship, forged through tragedy, grows.
Brit Marling, who not only co-wrote this film but it is also her fantastic debut in the lead role as Rhoda, turns this light weight, low budget story of a tragic relationship into a serious heavy weight contender. This is no doubt the start of a great career for her. I still haven't managed to catch her in the 2012 release Sound of My Voice which I'm very much looking forward to.
The film does raise a ton of unanswerable questions but sensibly chooses to stick to its guns and focus purely on Rhoda, her decisions and the reasons for the path she takes. This emotionally charged Indie Sci-Fi fascinates and mesmerises with its subtle, slow pace, mysterious soundtrack and affecting performances.
C5 @ 2100       Fury (2014) ****
Tumblr media
There are plenty of war films with the same old formula, and this film does follow a rather formulaic approach, but here we focus solely on a U.S. Sherman tank crew. Not since the amazing Kelly’s Heroes had I seen a film focus on these tanks. A history lesson in itself for the ignorant and uneducated - the Nazi Tiger tanks they are up against completely and utterly out gun them and with armour so strong - the Sherman’s found it extremely difficult to stop them. Comparatively this film is nothing like the almost light hearted, satirically barbed Kelly’s Heroes, here we have a film attempting to capture the realism of war, the death, the squalor and the sheer inhumanity. It does this very well.
It’s dark, rich colour palette and beautifully framed cinematography certainly keep your eyes glued to the screen. The poor Sherman crews did not have much hope. We are taken deep inside the belly of “Fury” the Sherman tank with crew of 5 led by Don “Wardaddy” Collier played by Brad Pitt. Never before have I seen such oddly perfect hair styling in a war zone since Clint Eastwood’s barnet in Where Eagles Dare.
The claustrophobia of the tank is captured really well but it also somehow creates space with every odd angle when we see times where this crew felt secure in their new found home. The performances are the icing on the cake here with everyone pulling out performances to be very proud of. Not a film that will survive a re-watch mainly down to its bleakness, but never the less a film I am very pleased to have seen.
Film4 @ 2320     The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) ****
Tumblr media
Before McConaughey did anything good at a time when mediocrity saturated his filmography with sub-standard Rom-Coms and Sahara… I hate Sahara…. Anyway - Here we see him in a fantastic role as (you guessed it) a lawyer who works out of the back of his car - a Lincoln… See what they did there! I’m a sucker for a good court room drama and this is certain one of those. Plenty of twists. Stand out McConaughey. Great supporting cast. Don’t miss it.
Sony @ 2320      Sunshine (2007) *****
Tumblr media
It’s been a while since this has graced our TV schedule. Don’t miss Danny Boyle’s splendid venture into the space Sci-Fi genre: Sunshine. I love this film. It pulls from so many influences from Science Fiction greats such as Alien, 2001, and even Event Horizon. The film is set 50 years in the future, a team of astronauts are sent on a mission to reignite the dying sun. They are Earth’s last hope of survival.
Sunshine relies heavily on the quality of the cast to drive this through and they all do a sterling job. Particularly Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans. They all capture the essence of how 16 months cooped up in a confined space must make you feel. The mission takes a turn when they find the original lost ship from a failed mission in a decaying orbit around the sun. This is the beginning of a string of unfortunate and strange events that put not only their lives but their mission to save the world as well.
Boyle dishes out some seriously tense scenes and towards the end of the film it changes from Sci-Fi to Horror as certain things are revealed. Although not everyone welcomed these changes, I think they worked really well and it was a good twist ultimately carrying film to conclusion. Sunshine is a thrilling and very gripping Sci-Fi feast from a great British Director. A must see film.

First off - Ignore the cast. You would wrongly assume that a film with Harrison Ford / Daniel Craig / Sam Rockwell / Olivia Wilde / Paul Dano / Walter Goggins & Clancey Brown would at least be slightly watchable. You would be wrong. It may as well have cast Hugh / Pew / Barney McGrew / Cuthbert / Dibble & Grub. Disjointed, Unentertaining, dull and horribly boring - Nothing stands out here. I haven’t felt this disappointed in a “Western” since Wild Wild West and I’m still angry about the sheer existence of that grot. Why was this film even made?? Maybe it’s a cover for something bigger, maybe Money Laundering!!? - filtering money through the stinking bowels of this “film”…Who knows… What I do know - AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
BBC2 @ 2240     John Carter (2012) * AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Tumblr media
What an unfortunately boring waste of a colossal budget. Slap-dash, hurried and choppy story with some ludicrous ideas. We’ve seen enough special effects to now not be simply wow-ed by that alone. John Carter looks good but bored the hell out of me. AVOID!

Today, the first three agents recruited into MAYHEM are here to showcase why they make the perfect team – Franchise Force.
As the “Face of MAYHEM”, Hollywood thinks of the agency as a franchise which needs to be marketed.  With Fortune and Hardtack making up some of the first recruited agents, it only seemed natural the three of them should be the driving “force” behind that “franchise”. Thus Franchise Force was born! Of course, it also helps their combat capabilities complement  each other well since Fortune is swift and damaging, Hardtack is tough and deadly at close range, and Hollywood is a good mix of the other two.
youtube
With the teleport technology capability of MAYHEM, agents in your squad are able to instantly teleport into and out of combat. This allows on-the-fly swapping of agents in the field, allowing one to heal while another takes their place, or allowing the best agent for a particular fight or task in your squad of three to replace the currently active one.
Agents of MAYHEM is a single-player, open-world, third-person action game for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC gaming systems releasing on August 15th in USA / August 18th in all other territories.
