When I was younger there was this older cousin that was a bit of a bully and one time he tried to convince me that some broken glass he found was diamond. I didn't believe him NOT because we found it on the ground OR because it very obviously looked like broken glass but because I was a rock nerd and it didn't pass the Mohs hardness test.

This is the same location as Taiju passed through on his journey, but taken from an angle slightly further back. Some parts look a little different, but the same broken statues are present.

The monkeys that follow Senku around are Japanese macaques, which are a species of Old World monkey present across most of Japan. They are also the most northern-living primate (not counting humans), and as such are adapted to the colder Japanese climate in the year 5738.

Senku couldn't start a fire with this setup, but neither would Taiju or Yuzuriha. The wood is wrong: the bottom should be stable like a plank, with a divot and a notch in it for catching the embers. The drill part should be much thinner, without bark, and rounded at the end.

Chert is a 7 on the Mohs scale, so it's hard, but not "off the charts".

Senku uses two percussion techniques to shape the stone: hard-hammer and bipolar. The former is used more frequently as it is more precise, but the latter is used when the stone isn't good quality.

After the rough shaping, Senku grinds the stone to have a polished edge, which makes it more durable. Polishing flint/chert is one of the markers of the transition from the Mesolithic to Neolithic Stone Age, as polished axes were more efficient at clearing trees for farmland.

I spent some time testing how to make plant cord, and Senku's methods are correct. Scraping away at the plant removes the bark and non-fiber-y parts leaving the long strings behind. Flax, hemp, and nettles are good plant choices, as they have longer fibers for twisting.

Senku's rope looks like 1-ply, meaning only a single strand is being twisted. This seems to contradict his earlier hand motions, as twisting parts in both hands would result in 2-ply, but his inexperience may be the reason it didn't work correctly. More plys means stronger rope.

Rubbing sticks raises the heat of the wood through friction, but the goal is to get the wood hot enough to decompose into what's known as pyrolysis products. Those products burn in oxygen, which then raises the heat more and creates a chain reaction, setting the wood on fire.

Assuming this deer is an adult Japanese sika deer, it weighs around 40-70kg. Senku at this point probably weighs under 61kg. In order to confidently lift a deer, Senku needs to have a counterweight of at least 70kg.

In this case, he bends a small tree using his own weight (one handed, even), but the chance of this tree being that elastic and capable of lifting over 60kg without simply breaking is almost impossible.

The more realistic option would have been using a counterweight such as a large log or stone, so that when the trap is activated, the counterweight falls and the trapped animal goes up.

However, that requires Senku to be able to lift something that heavy above his head.

Making leather requires several steps that can take several weeks to several months to complete. The hides need to be scraped and soaked in special solutions, have tannins added, and other processes.

The gnawing Senku is doing happens after the tanning, and is used to soften the leather. The modern way to do it is to rub it across a smooth/rounded surface, such as a sawhorse or metal pipe. The bending will make it more supple and won't destroy your jaw.

We see that one of the snow monkeys has a baby on their back. Snow monkey babies are normally born from April to June. Four months after birth, the babies are too big to hang from their mother's underside, so they move to her back.

The earliest this time scene could be is therefore August, which is about 2 months before Taiju depetrified. Any of Senku's experiments or builds likely happened in those last 2 months, since we don't see him progress with anything else before then.

I know this chapter took a while, but the topics were too interesting and also testable so I went a little overboard with how hard I was looking things up haha!

Show and tell time cuz I got some new rocks with my rock tumbler and I am excite!!!!!!!!

Gonna start with the easiest to identify for me cuz I've had 2 giant raw pieces of it for years now: rose quartz!! Its about half the size of the smaller piece I already had. Which seems wild cuz its still bigger than all the tumbled pieces I have. Obviously its gonna shrink in the tumbler but I think it'll still be my biggest piece of tumbled rose quartz.

Next we have sodalite!! Another one thats easy for me to identify. I only have raw sodalite and only recently encountered polished sodalite in a crystal shop so im pretty familiar with how it looks raw. These are definitely the biggest pieces I have. The others all came in one of those "sift for gemstones" things at silver dollar city.

Unakite!!!! This is my first piece of unakite. Ive only seen the raw stuff in youtube videos but its relatively identifiable by its colors

Raw tigers eye!!! Another thing I've only seen in pictures tho i do have a tumbled piece

Fluorite! Another one im fairly familiar with. Another rock that i have a fair amount of but none this big.

Some yellow calcite. I believe I have some small pieces of this but id need to check my box.

This is where things start to get dicey. In the picture it looks more orange but in person its more pinkish salmon-y color. I THINK its feldspar. But it could also be orange calcite. I need to test the hardness to be sure. Feldspar is 6-6.5 on the mohs scale while calcite is a three. If id thought about it when I was taking pictures I wouldve held my phones flashlight up to it to check its transparency (feldspar is opaque while calcite is translucent) but now theyre a few feet away and I have a cat laying on me so that'll have to wait lol. Also, fun fact, feldspar has been found on Mars!

I THINK this might be a really rough piece of amethyst. COULD also be purple fluorite. Hard to tell in this lighting (and dry) but in the bathroom light when it was wet its very purple. The more I think about it its probably fluorite tho

I am almost positive this is garnet. I have a few raw pieces of garnet but theyre pretty small. But it definitely looks like the pieces I already have.

hello! i have a bunch of crystals. i fell out of spirituality for a bit bc of mental health issues and i’ve forgotten what the crystals were. could you please help me identify them?

I’d love to, but I'm afraid that I won't be able to do well if sent pictures or videos. Pictures and videos make it difficult to assess colour, lustre, weight, and density.

However, I can abridge essentially what you'll need to do to work through to identify them.

Colour.

Lustre, or how light interacts with the surface of the rock. If you have tumbles or cut crystals, ignore this because both processes mess with lustre.

Weight and density. Coal is rather light for its size, while my piece of galena is dense. You don't need exact numbers, but it should feel lighter or heavier for its size.

Streak, or what colour marking the crystal leaves behind when scratched on a surface. If you can get a suitably flat stone, you could probably test this, but professionals use porcelain tiles.

Crystal habit, or the shape of the crystals themselves. This can be a bit murky, since a lot of crystals share habits. Similar to lustre, if your crystals have been tumbled or cut, you can't check for this.

Hardness. This is a little destructive for the crystal, so do this on a side that you won't see or care about. Using the Mohs hardness scale, scratch it with different materials. When you find something that scratches it, then its hardness is below that object's hardness.

Other features. Some crystals smell. Some crystals glow under blacklights. Some crystals are magnetic. There's a lot of specific properties a crystal can have. You don't necessarily need to test for these unless you need to or feel as if they're relevant, but they can help in identification.

I have intentionally left off cleavage, fracture, and tenacity, which, while important for identification, involves breaking your crystal apart.

When it comes to keeping track, I have a display case I've put labels in to organise them. Before that, I made origami boxes, wrote the crystal names on the boxes, and kept those boxes in a file box. Digitally speaking, the only thing I've ever used is Minerals, but it can be pretty finicky to get working and use.

I can also point to a few places that do offer identification. These communities will also ask you about the things I listed above, so you'll need to have them on hand.
