my tablet is currently halfway across the country for repairs (my brother's the most tech-savvy in my family and asking him to take a look at it was cheaper than taking it to a shop) so i haven't been able to draw lately. i've made a bunch of traditional sketches in the meantime, but none of them are presentable enough to post here, so i decided to take a trip down memory lane and fill out one of foxorian's influence maps!

below the cut are the names of the artists featured here, as well as a little bit of director's commentary on how they've influenced me :]

yugo limbo (website, tumblr, twitter) - some time last year, i realized something profoundly unnerving: i actually... don't like the art in smile for me's original release all that much? that's not to say it's bad, just that there isn't a whole lot about it outside of maybe its architecture that stands out to me. which is REALLY WEIRD, considering i wrote a whole retrospective about how much this game means to me. art-wise, however, it was only after smile for me's release that yugo limbo's art evolved in a way that really resonated with me; i love how textured everything is, i love the way they simplify clothing folds and the way that skin wrinkles around the joints, i love their love for puppets; all of those things ended up worming their way into my art style and tastes one way or another, and i couldn't be happier!! it didn't feel right to leave smile for me out of the equation entirely, though, so i chose a piece that was both related to that game and that i felt reflected a lot of what i love about yugo's more recent art.

echobsilly (twitter, tumblr) - oh god, speaking of yugo limbo - god. i fucking love echo's art so much i have no idea how to even do it justice in writing. like many people i first found him through his smile for me/limbolane fanart and animations - and those are some of his best work, don't get me wrong, but i really wanted to include one of his original designs to make a point that he's just fuckin great at art in general. character design, facial expressions, body language, composition, LIGHTING... he makes it all just. so so so gorgeous. i always liked "painterly" art styles for lack of a better word, but i think his art is what first pushed me to embrace that more in my digital art. i also like how he talks about dr. habit like he's his dead wife. i'm very proud to call him a friend these days :]

japhers (tumblr, twitter, instagram) - i first found japhers' art in high school and he very quickly became a HUUUUUGE influence on my taste in character and costume design. one of the big reasons i never fully bought into the idea that men's fashion is inherently harder to design is bc so much of his art is already dedicated to exploring fashion Without the restrictions of a gender binary in place which is to say that he's really good at drawing buff dudes in frilly outfits. i also think he gave me more confidence to draw more intricate costumes without having to worry about super dainty and clean lineart, bc a lot of his art looks like it's kinda been carved/rendered out of sketches, and it is Gorgeous.

moe suppe (website, tumblr, cohost) - another artist i found in high school, albeit originally from a long-gone instagram account. his art is what kickstarted my desire to have some Roughness in my art, some Texture. it may not have stuck to my lineart, but it Definitely stuck to my rendering. it helped that i was going through a pretty big angel/demon phase at the time, which meant i was pretty immediately drawn in by his delightfully weird worldbuilding. i should probably read fear not now that it's an actual serial...

val wise (website, itch.io, twitter, instagram) - a more recent influence, but a pretty significant one nonetheless. i featured the cover of délicatesse here because it was the first thing from him that i had ever read, but in general his grasp on the human body really blows me away given how deceptively simple his style looks at first glance, especially his faces. the way fat and hair sits on her bodies, and how much it varies from character to character... it's beautiful without being So glamorous that it feels untouchable. his costume design is also great. i recommend his comics for low fantasy/ursula k. le guin fans who are Dying to see more fat characters in leading roles. i also just found out that i am of two hearts is free on itch.io, so i'll be treating myself to that over spring break.

partycoffin (tumblr, twitter) - if you have known me for any amount of time at all then this should not come as a surprise to you. i actually wasn't going to include partycoffin in this map at first, because while welcome home has inspired me in Many creative pursuits, i didn't think visual art was one of them? i definitely picked up some of clown's love for dramatic lighting and thinner lines with just a smidge of well-placed hatching subconsciously, though.

ryoko kui - probably the most recent artist featured here? anyways i have a confession to make: i have yet to read dungeon meshi. i just know that when i saw a post compiling a bunch of ryoko kui's sketches from her daydream hour series, i was so overwhelmed with this feeling of, like… "oh, yeah, these capture almost everything i love about women as flesh and blood people. when i draw women this is the kind of beauty that i want people to see in them." of course, ryoko kui is a great character designer in general, but something about her women specifically really speak to me. the earthier color palettes and rendering also do a lot to endear her art to me.

shuzo oshimi - specifically his art in blood on the tracks. something that really stood out to me in that series was whenever the shadows would get really intense, and you'd get these big blocks of black with just the faintest bit of hatching to soften out some of their edges. it was always very effective in creating this sense of claustrophobia. i really want to keep incorporating that in my more intense pieces!

person918x (tumblr, instagram) - i don't work with 3d art often and i don't see myself doing so any time soon, but the composition of person918x's pieces is something i take a lot of inspiration of. i also love his sequential art, as someone who does a lot of dream journaling it's sick to see the exact Vibe of a dream be put to (digital) canvas. i also firmly believe that he's one of the only people out there who knows what he's doing when it comes to using generative AI in art.

oops i made this list too long so now i have to put the last two artists in a new block.

10. meatgiri (twitter, instagram) - definitely the artist i've known about the longest out of this selection. i think i've been following her since…. oh god. since i was in middle school. way before she was meatgiri, even. i think her influence probably shows up the least in my art, but there are definitely some characteristics that stuck with me for a very long time (the lil block of black accompanied by one or two lines for shading on the neck, the looser lineart making it really easy to incorporate soft curves and sharp edges, the Eyes, etc etc.) i chose this drawing of her oc juniper bc i thought it was both reflective of her current art And a good embodiment of a lot of things i wanted to emulate from her art as a young'un.

11. dragan bibin (website, instagram) - specifically his 'deimos' series. much like with person918x, it's his compositions that really stand out to me the most, and you probably know by now that i'm a sucker for high contrast. i find it interesting though that he uses high contrast to obscure more than he does to highlight... helps a lot with giving the deimos paintings that air of Quiet Unease. another thing i want to incorporate in my horror-adjacent art! manmade environments gone wrong!

Halve vaste steken. In den 3. en 4. toer haakt men, een wieltje nabootsende, om elk d. st. van de rozet 1 h. v. st., in den 3. toer 1 kett., in den 4. toer 2 kett. na elken h. v. st. Aan het einde van den 4. toer met 1 h. v. st. aan den 1 h. v. st. van dezen toer verbonden. Nu keert men het werk om, zoodat de verkeerde zijde boven ligt, haakt langs het naastbijzijnde d. st. eenige h. v. st., dan 4 à 5 kett. Men is hierdoor tot aan den bovenrand van de moes gekomen en haakt nu voor den buitenrand van de rozet 3 toeren, als volgt: 1. toer: 1 v. st. om den 2. rechten knoop van de moes, 5 kett., * 1 st. tusschen de beide naastaanzijnde moezen, 5 kett., 2 maal afwisselend: 1 v. st. om den tweeden volgenden rechten knoop van de naastbijzijnde moes, 5 kett. De fond van deze pelerine is met den geschulpten haaksteek met bruine castorwol gewerkt; de rand, die den rug omgeeft en aan de voorstukken een soort van epauletten vormt is van grijs en witte perléwol. Fig. 29 geeft de helft van de pelerine en wel fond en rand in verband met elkander; laatstgenoemde is op het knippatroon gedeeltelijk door een gladde lijn aangeduid. Men begint de pelerine aan den onderrand van den fond van den rug en maakt hiervoor met de wol een opzetsel van 11 steken. Hierop teruggaande werkt men den 1. toer met den geschulpten haaksteek. (Zie afb. No. 53 benevens de daarbij behoorende beschrijving. Aan het einde van den toer 2 kett. In den 2. toer begint het meerderen, hetgeen overeenkomstig het fatsoen van het knippatroon en aan het begin en einde van den toer gescheiden moet, daar men aldaar telkens een patroonfiguur meer haakt. Men bevestigt den draad aan den laatsten opzetsteek voor het eerste patroonfiguur, haakt dan 5 kett. en werkt in de 4 volgende kett. een patroonfiguur. Dan haakt men de volgende figuur op eene figuur van den vorigen toer. Aan het einde van den toer meerdert men, daar men de beide laatste steken van de figuur, die de meerdering vormt, om de beide kett. aan het einde van den toer haakt en werkt daarop nogmaals 2 kett. voor het meerderen van den volgenden toer. Op deze wijze haakt men overeenkomstig het knippatroon; als men tot aan de uitsnijding van den hals is gekomen, dan werkt men elk voorstuk in aansluiting aan den rug voort, terwijl men hierbij naar vereischte mindert. Den vervaardigden fond omgeeft men met een toer vaste steken van witte wol, die den 1. toer van den rand vormt. 2. toer. * 1 v. st. om een v. st. van den vorigen toer, dan dezen steek niet in aanmerking nemende, eene lus door den volgend. steek van den vorigen toer, 3 kett. en de beide op de naald zijnde lussen te zamen afwerken; daarna haakt men 1 v. st. in den volgenden steek. Van * af herhalen. 3. toer. Men legt de perléwol aan en haakt 1 v. st. om 1 v. st. van den vorigen toer, om denzelfden steek stekende werkt men eene moes, men neemt hiervoor 3 lussen op de naald, waarbij men na elke lus eenmaal omslaat, zoodat men in het geheel 3 omslagen en 3 lussen op de naald heeft, die met den laatsten omslag te gelijk worden afgewerkt; dan volgt 1 kett., dan weder 1 moes om den volgenden v. st. (dus 1 steek van den vorig. toer overslaande) en zoo voort. De smalle rand, die den fond in de rondte omgeeft, is met deze 3 toeren gereed; nu begint de breede rand van den rug die nog met 10 toeren meer wordt voortgezet. Den nu volgenden toer (4. toer) begint men op de plaats van het knippatroon door een dubbel punt aangewezen. De overige toeren van den rand komen gedurig eenige steken meer naar het voorstuk, zoodat de rand naar de einden langzaam schuin afloopt, zooals het knippatroon aantoont. 4. toer. (Perléwol) 1 v. st. om een kett. van den vorigen toer * 1 kett., 2 st. om de volgende kett. Van * af herhalen, tot aan de overeenkomende plaats aan de andere zijde van den rug. 5―8. toer als de 2. toer, doch de 5. en 8. toer worden geheel met witte, de 6. en 7. toer worden met guimpewol gewerkt, bovendien moeten de kettingsteeklussen gedurig verzet worden. 9. en 10. toer als de 3. en 4. toer. 11. toer (witte wol). 1 v. st. in 1 st. * 4 st. telkens 2 door 1 kett. gescheiden, om 1 kett. van den vorigen toer; 1 kett., hiermede afwisselend 2 en 3 stokjesfiguren van den vorigen toer overslaan. Van * af herhalen. De 12. en 13. toer worden op dezelfde wijze gewerkt en wel de eerste met zwarte, de andere met witte wol. De stokjesfiguren worden gedurig om de kett. gewerkt die tusschen de twee aan twee stokjes van den vorigen toer gehaakt worden. De 14. toer begint bij ster van fig. 29. Daar de toeren gedurig eenige steken maar naar voren gaan, zoo haakt men tot aan de plaats, waar de stokjesfiguren van den 11.―13. toer in eene rechte richting zijn, met de perléwol telkens om de kett. tusschen de 4 stokjes een boog van 3 st., 1 kett., 3 st.; na elken boog 2 kett., 1 v. st. om 1 kett. van den vorigen toer, 2 kett. Heeft men ongeveer 4 zoodanige bogen gewerkt, dan verbindt men nu gedurig, in plaats van 1 v. st. te haken, de 2 kett. aan genoemde plaats van den vorigen toer, haakt weder 2 kett., verbindt ze in eene rechte richting aan den kett. van den 12. toer, dan volgen er weder 2 kett., die aan de overeenkomende plaats van den 11. toer bevestigd worden, daarna 2 kett., 1 v. st. om den kett. die zich tusschen de 2 st. van den 10. toer bevindt. Teruggaande haakt men op dezelfde wijze tot aan den 13. toer, zoodat de bogen en de stokjesfiguren elk door 2 zoodanige kettingsteekbanden gescheiden zijn. De rand is nu voltooid. Twee koorden met kwasten van achteren in het midden en aan de voorste hoeken dienen om de pelerine vast te maken.

Pelerine voor meisjes van 8―10 jaar Haakwerk. Afbeelding No. 13 en 48. Knippatr. keerz. van het Supp. No. XI, fig. 30. 4½ lood grijze en witte 6 draads perléwol, ¾ lood zwart en witte guimpe, 1 lood witte 4 draads zephirwol. De fond van het model is met grijze perléwol met den tunischen, den zoogenaamden victoria-haaksteek (zie afbeelding No. 48) gewerkt en met kettingsteken van zwart en witte guimpewol versierd, dat een geruit patroon vormt. Na voltooiing van den 32. patroontoer, die aan ons model 69 steken telt, haakt men op de 30 eerste steken hiervan het rechter voorstuk, daarna op de 30 laatste steken van genoemden patroontoer het linker voorstuk. Elk voorstuk heeft volgens ons model 51 toeren. Het minderen geschiedt naar aanwijzing op het knippatr. eerst telkens aan den voorrand van het voorstuk, alleen in de 4 of 5 laatste toeren aan beide zijden, zoodat het voorstuk spits toeloopt. Als de fond is voltooid, dan voert men daarop het bovenvermelde geruitepatr. uit. Men naait er eerst de dwarsloopende lijnen op, die evenwijdig met de loodrechte rijen steken moeten wezen, en wel in eene tusschenruimte van 3 patroontoeren. Bij het werken van de schuine lijnen, die met de eerste schuine ruiten moeten vormen, kan men de richting hiervoor afteekenen door eerst draden door den fond te rijgen. Ter vervaardiging van den rand van witte zephirwol omgeeft men eerst den fond met 1 toer vaste steken, in elke loodrechte stekenlus van den buitenrand 1 v. st. werkende. 2. toer. In elken steek van den vorigen toer 1 v. st., gedurig om de beide bovenste lussen van den steek gestoken. 3. toer. * 1 v. st. om den naastaanzijnden steek, 1 moes om den volgenden steek van de voorlaatste, dus van den 1. toer; een moes wordt gevormd, door 3 maal afwisselend eenmaal omslaan en eene lus opnemen; alle lussen en omslagdraden die op de naald zijn worden met eenmaal doorhalen van den draad te zamen afgewerkt. Van * af herhalen. Nu werkt men aan den buitenrand van de pelerine, uitgenomen de uitsnijding van den hals verder als volgt: 4. toer. Om elken steek van den vorigen toer 1 v. st. Dan herhaalt men nog 2 maal den 3. en 4. toer, waarbij de moezen, die gedurig 2 toeren overspannen, verzet worden. Ook moet bij de eerste herhaling van den toer moezen, elke tweede volgende moes met zwarte en witte guimpewol gewerkt worden, deze moes wordt evenwel gedurig met witte wol afgewerkt, de draad van de guimpewol wordt aan de achterzijde van de eene moes tot de andere gevoerd. Eindelijk omgeeft men de pelerine in de rondte met 1 toer picots van perléwol, daar men in elken 2. volgenden steek 1 v. st., daar tusschen gedurig voor een picot 4 kett. en 1 st. in den 1. steek hiervan werkt. Aan den achterrand, als ook aan de voorste hoeken van de pelerine brengt men een koord aan van dubbele grijze wol met kettingsteken gehaakt.
