[The building] was designed with a unique shutter envelope made of perforated white aluminum, which features a recurring motif. It envelops the facades of the building like lace. Like the old Mashrabiya (lattice) shutters, the envelope regulates the amount of sunlight that enters the different spaces in the apartments, as well as the degree of the tenants’ privacy. The shutters open like a harmonica, facilitating dynamic and diverse opening configurations that affect the façade. There is a large patio in the middle of the building that provides an additional light and air exposure, and also enables a view of the sky from some of the apartments. There are also columns of vegetation on the patio that are hung from the ceiling, reminiscent of an upside-down forest.

I'm really intrigued by the concept of shutter on a facade \ mashrabiya shutters, and its use in sustainable, environment-specific designs. The idea is perfectly suitable in areas with warm weather and plenty of sunlight, and I find it very clever. Good on humanity for realizing this such a long time ago!

This beautiful project by pitsou kedem architects really caught my eye. I think the concept of the shutters is utilized here in a beautiful way that fits well as a facade for a building in the middle of the city.

It's either during construction or has just been finished and is awaiting occupancy, so the only photos I found are from during construction. We'll have to settle for these simulations.

According to their website, this 6-story housing project contains 70 apartments with a total floor area of 6500 sqm.
