Oh look! More late night writing! I didn’t get around to drawing ship stuff but I did find a poly one so I will work on that tomorrow but in the meantime have some Tomas x Hallvard head canons! I know no one really cares about my OC but I did promise y’all I would write these anyway so I did! Questions are from ask games, please feel free to ask me any you might have about well anything MK! Especially anything Lin Kuei! It’s my favorite thing to write about well them and Syzoth 🥺
Describe their first date.
Hallvard and Tomas’ first date was a very simple lunch date. It really wasn’t much of a first date as they didn’t go anywhere and do anything but they did sneak off away from Bi-Han and Kuai Liang to have lunch alone. Hallvard was the one who asked Tomas out after confiding in his closest ally, Bi-Han, and asking his advice on what to do. Bi-Han had suggested lunch together as they were all still quite young and not yet allowed in the village at the base of the temple. At first Tomas had no idea why Hallvard wanted to have lunch alone with him but after the younger boy confesses his feelings Tomas pieces things together. He doesn’t return Hallvard’s feelings right away though, Tomas doesn’t know how he feels about men, women or anyone for that matter but he was flattered his friend was so interested. He continues to have lunch with Hallvard and he too goes to Bi-Han for help sorting out his feelings, it’s rough being the oldest and most experienced of the bunch; and gradually realizes while he likes men and women but he also likes Hallvard as more than a friend.
How often do they say “I love you”?
Hallvard is more lovey dovey and more affectionate in general than Tomas is and he often tells Tomas he loves him. For Tomas it’s usually reserved for leaving on a dangerous mission and coming home from one. It’s not that Tomas doesn’t love Hallvard he’s just not as talkative as Hallvard is, Hallvard is quite boisterous and an open book so there’s no hiding anything for him. Hallvard is totally a Golden Retriever boyfriend and showers Tomas in words of affection and attention to the point it gets embarrassing for Tomas. Especially when Bi-Han parrots Hallvard in order to tease Tomas, Bi-Han might be a good older brother and might be supportive of their relationship but that doesn’t mean he’s not going to tease both of them mercilessly.
How do they keep in contact when they’re apart? Do they write letters, talk on the phone, or simply wait out the time?
Technology is not huge for the Lin Kuei in this timeline (or at least it doesn’t appear to be) so they communicate by carrier pigeons and other birds. Hallvard often sends frivolous birds with sweet little messages like “miss you”, “love you”, “thinking of you” while Tomas sends practical messages like “here are my coordinates”, “target sighted” and “target terminated”. Every so often though on long missions Tomas will give into Hallvard’s affectionate messages and send him similar ones in return. Tomas definitely does better with separation than Hallvard does.
How do they care for each other when one of them is wounded/sick?
Being professional thieves and assassins both men spend a lot of time injured and both have a very good knowledge of how to treat said injuries. Due to the nature of his powers being based largely on self inflicted wounds and being injured in general Hallvard is almost always in most need of care. Tomas has spent many a night not so happily stitching his boyfriend back up, he understands that Hallvard has to be injured to tap into his power but that doesn’t mean Tomas has to like it. He’s very tender and soft during these moments and is very meticulous when tending to Hallvard. Likewise Hallvard is just as attentive treating Tomas’ injuries but luckily Tomas doesn’t get injured very often. When Tomas got his nasty scar over his eye however he was so scared and terrified trying to treat it. He was so worried that his eye was permanently damaged and there was so much blood. Hallvard might have struggled pretty hard to hold back his panicked tears as he cleaned and dressed it and may have cries in the bathroom afterwards. He can be quite emotional for a big scary assassin.
Is their relationship a secret? If so, why?
Yes. Bi-Han and Kuai Liang know about their relationship but the rest of the Lin Kuei have no clue. People definitely have their suspicions but no one is stupid enough to start anything with the Grandmaster’s younger brother. Their relationship is primarily a secret because while homosexuality isn’t forbidden in the Lin Kuei it’s also not the normal. Tomas is also a relatively private person and would rather not announce to the world he and Hallvard are together, the people who are important to him know and that’s good enough for him. Hallvard on the other hand finds it hard not to let things slip and has almost called Tomas pet names in public hundreds of times. When he does screw up he plays it off and being a “foreign thing” he’s usually reasonably convincing but he has definitely gotten strange looks.

I feel like l’ve been neglecting Hallvard and Smoke ever since I decided to self ship with Syzoth too. Bad Sol. Bad! I will try and write something for them next, maybe headcanons? Maybe smut? I’m not sure. I just don’t want Smonk to feel like I don’t love him too because I do! I just felt he was too close to Bi-Han to do anything with personally what with them being adopted brothers now. I swear everyone in this game is too hot now lol I need a harem instead of poly shipping. I’m also thinking of getting a commission of me and Syzoth too well honestly I’d love me, Bi-Han and Syzoth but I don’t know that I can afford a three character commission. Maybe I should get one of Hallvard and Smoke instead? I really don’t know I’m kind of all over the place right now aren’t I? What I’d really love is a family portrait but fuck me lol I definitely can’t afford three adults and four kids lol maybe I can do some shitty stick figures myself? I can draw but I can’t color lol I also can’t draw without a reference so I would have to find kids that I would think are what my kids with Bi-Han look like and go from there. Oh hey look! I’m rambling! What a shock! I did take my nails off because one broke so I can type and doodle and stuff again so I guess that’s a plus at least?

Hallvard is definitely calling Smoke Cupi, it’s too cute to pass up. I don’t care if animalities never exist again, they did and that’s the important part and furthermore they are perfectly adorable pet names. Hallvard needs an animality, maybe a Dire Wolf as an homage to his dogs? Is that too close to Nighwolf’s though? Oh oh maybe a Reindeer?? He can gore the shit out of people with his antlers? I think that might be the winner. Christmas will never be the same.

Okay so I'm a suckered for self torment regarding food flavors that are spicy (due to some slight traditions i've picked up in recent years), so this got me thinking.
Is Bi Han tolerant to such flavors? Are his brothers? (Kuai Liang, Hallvard and Tomas), your kiddos and other Lin Kuei? I understand the Lin Kuei would be the type to have a strict diet to follow, but on that off chance they got to eat food outside this restriction, who's likely to have the better tolerance?
I like to think Bi-Han handles spicy very well, but that’s just a personal headcanon? There are a lot of spicy cuisines in China so I don’t think the brothers are strangers to spice. I tend to think Bi-Han and Kuai Liang are part Teochew, a Chinese minority; based on one of Noob’s shadow gears in MK11 so a lot of the food they ate growing up was Teochew Cuisine. It’s known mainly for their braised dishes but there are also spicy noodle dishes, so Bi-Han and Kuai Liang would be used to the spice from an early age on. The Lin Kuei diet I imagine is primarily protein heavy and vegetable heavy for nutrients and probably isn’t Teochew since the Lin Kuei is most likely in Heilongjiang and is mostly known for stews and spicy, rich, salty dishes, so there’s still the element of spice in the local cuisine, but please take what I say with a grain of salt. I’m going off of food blogs about Heilongjiang province and Teochew cuisines, I’m not very familiar with them myself, but we do have Sweet and Sour Pork here which is a very famous Heilongjiang speciality! I love asks like this by the way, it makes me research and look up fun and interesting new facts and I get to learn new things!
Tomas and Hallvard eat what the others eat, but Hallvard is kind of a wuss when it comes to spice, us Norwegians are not exactly known for spicy food, we just have shitty fermented shark that smells and tastes like piss. I personally haven’t eaten it since it’s against my morales to eat shark, but it’s common amongst my peoples and since Hallvard is like a boy me, he’d be familiar with it, especially since he was raised in a fishing village. Tomas is a little better with spicy, but nothing like the Sub-Zero brothers are who handle it without problem. Tomas and Hallvard always complain when the four of them go out for hot pot and Bi-Han and Kuai Liang want to get the mala base and Hallvard and Tomas want the chicken base, thankfully most hot pots allow for two different flavors and all the boys are happy. Out of the four it probably goes Kuai Liang, Bi-Han, Tomas and Hallvard, due to his pyromancy Kuai Liang tolerates all things hot a little bit better than his brother does, including spice, but they are fairly evenly matched. They’re both excellent at eating hot temperature foods, Bi-Han’s breath cools it off and the burning food just doesn’t bother Kuai Liang in the slightest because he often runs warmer than the food he’s eating.
When it comes to my kiddos, they have a good tolerance for spice thanks to their father introducing them to his native cuisine from what he remembers from his Mother’s cooking and dishes he had in the Lin Kuei, but they have a far more Cantonese style diet since a lot of the foods I love are traditionally Cantonese. They also get some Scandinavian fare from me, like my excellent Swedish Meatballs, but those aren’t spicy in the slightest. I would say the boys have a better spice tolerance than I do, but Bingbing doesn’t really at spicy yet as she’s not even three yet.

Semi serious question, this regards the sub zero bro's (plus hallvard and tomas) and the kids, it involves pets. More directly i own a Adult Male Siberian Husky (Brownish/Red/Ginger and White) irl named Bear who ill insert insert into the fandoms i favor and frequent on occasions, however an idea of mine i wanna write as a small (an i mean really small) oneshot keeps running into traps like kyrpt guy from mk11 on how interactions would pan out in such scenario involving a inside/outside/housepet.
As resident master at writing for Bi-han could you spare me your knowledge?
I’m honestly not too sure what you mean lovely? Do you mean Bear running into traps like Krypt guy or Bear out maneuvering traps the way Krypt guy does? I’m no slouch when it comes to gore and violence, MK has been my entire childhood, but I can only tolerate gore and violence towards humans, I’m a hard no when it comes to animals. I love animals, especially dogs immensely and the thought of anything bad happening to them makes me cry like a toddler, so I’m going to assume you mean to have Bear sniffing out and deftly avoiding traps. Dogs are very aware of their surroundings and can smell things much better than people can, so for example Bear could smell out a fire trap before triggering it because he could smell the gas. At least that’s what I would imagine? Hallvard has two big wolf dogs, Vali and Balder but they don’t accompany him into battle, they are housepets and are treated like family members, so they stay at the Lin Kuei Temple when Hallvard is out on missions. So, I’m not quite sure what it would be like bringing your dog along with you on adventures except I feel as though they would alert you to danger before you realized it was there? I’m sorry if I’m not answering the question properly, I’ve just never really thought about this before because my dogs have always been the biggest, spoiled little marshmallows on the planet, I’ve always had big dogs Jäger was around 90-95 lbs and Denny is 85lbs and they were/are just giant lap dogs. Denny being a literal lap dog and often has to be laying on me or he whines, he’s a quarantine baby who has major separation anxiety 🙃 So, I would never be able to see them accompanying me on adventures or anything like that, hell I don’t go on adventures, an adventure for me is successfully navigating the market haha So, I’m pretty much rambling at this point because I honestly don’t know how to answer this? I just figure Bear is clever and able to overcome any obstacles in his way.

Some crappy Hallvard sketches no one asked for, lots of Viking references used, and a cute little Smonk 🥺
I’ve decided his hair changes at Tomas’ whim because Tomas does his hair for him, it’s often braided in some fashion but it changes depending on how much down time they have. Sometimes it’s more shaved than other times but usually Hallvard’s head is partially shaved. Braids are hard to draw though so sorry it’s sucky. I also am having a hard time deciding what his mask should look like but one or my besties suggested an animal skull with horns and I loved that idea. So please imagine that! More hairstyles ideas after the cut!

Hallvard was orphaned at a young age and was forced to survive in the harsh wilds of Norway with the help of his dogs Vali and Balder but was taken in by a young Lin Kuei operative (Hydro) who was in the area at the time of his personal tragedy. He was taken back to Arctika and raised alongside his fellow Lin Kuei and trained to be a reaver. A reaver gains their powers from damage either self inflicted or received during battle, the more damage Hallvard takes the more damage he’s able to inflict. It’s a double edge sword however and he can easily get too injured and collapse in battle, his attack style is very aggressive and reckless, his goal is to get injured and it drives Tomas crazy who usually patches Hallvard up after missions. Hallvard is a verse, he’s just as happy to let Tomas take the lead as he is to take the lead himself. He’s very sweet and doting and very much a Golden Retriever Boyfriend, he’s good friends with everyone in the Lin Kuei but he’s particularly close to Bi-Han and Sektor, despite being horribly jealous of Scorpion they’re actually very good friends. He knows Tomas would never be unfaithful but sometimes he’s worries he’s not good enough for Tomas and that he deserves someone better and more refined like Scorpion. Hallvard is very loyal to the Lin Kuei as they took him in and raised him after he lost his family in the tragic fire, he looks up to and respects Bi-Han as Grandmaster immensely but also loves having drinking contests with him, usually ending in a tie when they both pass out from stubbornness. He loves spending his down time with Tomas and tinkering with his grenades and other weapons in his arsenal, he’s gotta make sure his baby is well stocked up. He’s very go with the flow and doesn’t have a lot of strong opinions and usually defaults to Bi-Han’s judgment.

I found my face claim for Hallvard! Norweigan model Thomas Liden, I’m laughing at the fact that his face claim is named Thomas.
Yes Hallvard does have dark hair even if his face model doesn’t, I swear dark haired Norwegians exist! One of my besties at my job ages ago was a stupidly tall dark haired Norwegian and even though I bleach the fuck out of my hair I’m also a darker haired Norwegian. I might sketch Hallvard sooner or later, I might not lol I’m not sure I can do his hair which is supposed to be like a messy Viking braid/dreadlocks situation. I would also want to draw him with Tomas and I’ve never tried to draw him either so who knows, it will probably never happen. 🙃 Well at least not until we know Tomas’s face model then maybe I can draw him, I could do them in their masks maybe though? Even if I do though I might not post it cause no one cares about my OC 🤣😭

OC stuff no one asked for!
Tomas is Hallvard’s first crush, he’s a little bit younger than Tomas and grew up admiring him. He’s also always been very impressed with Bi-Han and his incredible mastery of cryomancy but it never manifested into a crush. Hallvard has always only had eyes for Tomas.
Hallvard is a bit of a masochist thanks to his abilities, as a reaver he gains power from injuries and ingesting enemy blood. He has a nervous tick of injuring himself unless Tomas is around, Tomas keeps him relaxed and grounded.
Hallvard is a very enthusiastic lover and lives to please Tomas in whatever way he can. He’s also inexperienced, Tomas being his first and only lover. He often goes to Bi-Han for advice which is always a fun time because listening to what his adoptive brother likes in bed is exactly how he wants to spend his time. Bi-Han also has limited experience with men as he prefers women so it often ends in Bi-Han throwing his hands in the air and yelling “I don’t know what to do, lick his asshole or something! Ugh! Shut up Hally!”
Hally is a nickname only Tomas, Bi-Han and Sektor call Hallvard as he’s closest to them, the other Lin Kuei often refers to him by his full name or Hall. Hally initially started as a term of endearment from Tomas but Bi-Han and Sektor started joining in a a playful and teasing way and it just stuck.
