“Crazy For You” by Madonna (1985)
So as “Crazy for You” has been circling my mind, I’ve been wanting to write about how Madonna was this tough-as-nails New York chick and the reason “Crazy for You” hits so hard is because of the level of vulnerability Madge shows in her performance. And there’s validity to that. “Crazy for You” has a level of emotional tension that was not as present on Madonna’s work up to that point (and wouldn’t reappear until some of the more disconcerting songs on Like a Prayer). If your heart hasn’t melted by the time she murmurs the title phrase after the final chorus, you’ve got some emotions that you need to work out.
“Crazy for You” also hits so hard because it’s such a great marriage of songwriter, producer and vocalist. John Bettis had a nice roll as a lyricist in the early-mid ‘80s, between this song, MJ’s “Human Nature”, and the Growing Pains theme song. Producer Jellybean Benitez proved his bona fides beyond dance music, and Madonna not only got her first ballad hit and her second chart-topper, but she also garnered her first Grammy nomination behind “Crazy for You”. She lost to Whitney, but I don’t know…”Crazy for You” feels way more authentic to me than “Saving All My Love for You” does. Which isn’t to say the latter is a bad song. But there’s a difference between technical singing and emotional singing for sure. The latter goes a much longer way for me.

Top 10 Sports Brands on Instagram
New Post has been published on https://popularchips.com/dailies/top-10-sports-brands-on-instagram/
Top 10 Sports Brands on Instagram
In the what seems to be a never-ending battle between Nike and Adidas, we all have that one friend who would swear by Puma. What does a pouncing panther have that the slick swoosh or legendary trefoil not have?
A brand is so much more than a logo or name. It can serve as a point of connection for communities or even provide a sense identity and belonging. The best brands not only promote their products, they inspire a new lifestyle, offer the promise of transformation and invest a considerable amount of time and effort on connecting and building up their communities.
While it might be difficult to nail down the exact definition of a brand, Seth Godin, the best-selling author, and marketer, comes pretty close.
A brand is the set of expectations, memories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another
In that spirit let’s explore the top 10 sports brands and their best performing posts on Instagram.
Stats provided by Popular Chips an Influencer Marketing Analytics Platform
1. Nike (71.5m followers)
Worlds collide. ⠀ @iomatrix23 reflects on the moment that started his @jumpman23 obsession.
A post shared by nike (@nike) on Oct 7, 2016 at 6:58pm PDT
That is right. Nike just did it again. They are the most followed sporting brand on Instagram. This short video about Marco Materazzi, an Italian soccer legend and his passion for Jordans received a whopping 4.8 million views. The video starts off with “When there’s a story. It has to be followed.” We followed and we couldn’t agree more.
  2.  NBA (22m followers)
Have a HAPPY & SAFE 4th of JULY!
A post shared by NBA (@nba) on Jul 4, 2016 at 6:31am PDT
NBA, the basketball franchise has 30 teams ranging from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Boston Celtics. Regardless if you are a fan of basketball or not, it’s hard not smile at this whimsical 4th of July greetings.
  3. Adidas (14.2m followers)
GLITCH. A modular football boot with a core inner shoe and changeable skin. Create endless looks and performance edges without ever losing the same feel. Coming soon to London.
A post shared by adidas (@adidas) on Oct 31, 2016 at 2:00am PDT
Adidas launching the world’s first fully interchangeable football cleat. It allows the user to combine differently colored uppers and chassis for an even more personal football boot experience. Talk about bringing personalization to a whole new level. Mind sending us a pair of these?
  4. Jordan (12m followers)
“If we had lost, I would have been devastated.” Relive the iconic game where MJ showed the world how #GreatnessOvercomes. 🕘 9PM EST ESPN Classic.
A post shared by Jordan (@jumpman23) on Jun 11, 2016 at 6:24am PDT
Die-hard Jordan fans know this legend. His Airness was to be grounded for the pivotal 1997 swing game between the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz. He did not let the stomach flu stop him. He pushed himself and his undeniable heroism led the Bulls to win by 2 points. Michael Jordan beating both the flu and the Jazz definitely deserves #GreatnessOvercomes.
  5. Premier league (11.6m followers)
Congratulations to Newcastle United on promotion back to the Premier League 🙌
A post shared by Premier League (@premierleague) on Apr 24, 2017 at 1:37pm PDT
I am sure we all missed Newcastle United in the Premier League but fret not. They secured promotion with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Preston at St James’ Park. Is it me or does Rafael Benitez look relieved?
  6. NFL (9.3m followers)
Welcome back, @BeastMode! (via @raiders)
A post shared by NFL (@nfl) on Apr 26, 2017 at 1:17pm PDT
That is right. There is only one beast mode and his name is Marshawn Lynch. He is set to return after a 20-month absence. I am sure I am not the only one glad that the Raiders and Seahawks finally sealed the deal. Seems like more than 400,000 fans are glad too!
  7. Vans (7.6m followers)
@LinaBugz keeps it classic in her Sk8-Hi’s. Show us how you rock your favorite pair with #MyVans.
A post shared by vans (@vans) on Apr 28, 2017 at 6:45am PDT
Most of us know Vans for their “off the wall” sneakers. This collaboration between Vans and Lina Assayed, a fashion blogger is a great example of a brand that constantly engages with its community through influencer marketing.
  8. Converse (5.6m followers)
Like a breath of fresh air. The #ChuckII Spacer Mesh Collection. Take your pick at converse.com
A post shared by Converse (@converse) on Jul 28, 2016 at 7:02am PDT
Nothing says “Shoes Are Boring. Wear Sneakers” better than this post by Converse. Sharing their Chuck II Spacer Mesh Collection, this is one of the top posts for Converse. Another great example of an established brand (founded in 1908) constantly adapting to the latest trends to engage their customers.
  9. Puma (4.3m followers)
Let’s ride. #DoYou @pumawomen
A post shared by PUMA (@puma) on Apr 7, 2017 at 7:17am PDT
Puma created a new Instagram handle in support of its women’s clothing line. Its community focused on celebrating brave, confident and determined women. Did you know that Puma is the only sports manufacturing company that doesn’t have a slogan? Go #PUMAWomen!
  10. MLB (3.4m followers)
“I told you I wasn’t gonna slide.” – Chris Coghlan.
A post shared by MLB ⚾ (@mlb) on Apr 25, 2017 at 7:26pm PDT
Finally, who can forget Chris Coghlan’s spectacular home plate dive where he jumped over the catcher’s head to score! It is no surprise why this post received over 1 million views! Seriously, go watch it!
Conclusion
From Nike to Puma, MLB to EPL, we have explored all four directions of the top sporting brands on Instagram. The one thing all these 10 brands have in common is that they are great examples proving consistent and captivating visual content is a great way to engage and nurture communities of brand advocates.

The Basic Movement: Our Favorite Tees
Tumblr media
Runway trends usually get watered down—simplified, commercialized, and tweaked for mass production (aka RTW). Not that we’re complaining, we do want to wear an Alexander Wang jacket appropriate for this weather, but recent seasons show the rise of everyday wear as premium pieces. The t-shirt for example, ridiculously distressed as seen in Balmain or digitally printed with telephones like Mary Katrantzou’s, could be a statement of luxe when styled properly, be it with sneakers or pointed black pumps. So the basic tee has become one of our go-to pieces for an instachic look without trying too hard, and even when trying too hard, the t-shirt tends to dress down the boldest blue liners and killer studded heels. Here are a few of our favorites— yes, from our own closets— that we love to throw on during lazy days that still require editorial dressing.
Tumblr media
"I have an affinity with black shirts because of their simplicity and versatility. The phrase (stitched on, not printed) on this loose men's tee won me over. Coincidentally, wearing this shirt reminds me of indie band, Pains of Being Pure At Heart." - MJ Benitez, Editorial Assistant
Tumblr media
"An ultra-comfortable men's shirt emblazoned with Batman logos? Sold."
Tumblr media
"A cult classic and because sharks have been my obsession ever since forever. An added bonus? The print glows in the dark." - Daryl Chang, Fashion Director
Tumblr media
"It's my favorite shirt simply because it's of The Police. They were one of the many bands I grew to love listening to as a kid." - Trina Razon, Editorial Assistant
Read more about our favorite pieces in our August issue!
