things that i think thrawn + the ascendancy gang would love (part 2)

thrawn: earning as many doctorate & masters degrees as possible (he loves being able to say that he’s a master at everything from art history to underwater basket weaving - & he has the diplomas to prove it)

eli: the dying crafts list + being the one person preventing so many crafts from not being practiced anymore (he tries to teach them to the sky-walker girls with varying degrees of success)

ar’alani: women’s sports in general, but also really niche sports (you know she was playing pickleball way before everyone else, but now that it’s kind of popular she’s moving on to like roller derby or something)

wutroow: the duolingo owl - not the app, the owl specifically (even though she speaks like 5 languages already & will 10000% learn another just so she can gossip without other people being able to eavesdrop). also chappell roan.

che’ri: spontaneously chopping off all your hair in the bathroom at 2am (&& probably giving yourself bangs too for good measure)

samakro: renaissance festivals (you know he’s got a giant turkey leg in one hand, a mug of ale in the other + is booking it to axe throwing)

thalias: modern adaptations of jane austen novels (no one appreciates yearning like she does)

faro: driving late at night with your windows down & a killer playlist blaring (bonus points if it like just rained & you can smell it in the air)

ba’kif: sam reich on game changer (he wants his cedf officers to experience just a fraction of the stress they put him under so badly)

thrass: the headspace meditation app (also under so much stress, but handling it in a very different way)

thurfian + zistalmu: the reesa teesa ‘who tf did i marry’ tiktok series (this much hot goss? for free?! they’re sat)

First post🫣🫣 hope yall enjoy it! I'm certainly enjoying scrolling through everyone's artwork.

I wanted to put this out there! I'm working on a digital version today since it looks like he was dropped on his head. This was a work doodle done on my lunch break I didn't have much time.

I also probably imagine him way older than he is but oh well. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Ps. My drawing software is Krita (which is amazing for me) and I work on a Galaxy Tab 6 Lite i got in like 2020. It's trusty, and I've been using it on and off for the 4 years I've had it.

Some thoughts on Chiss names!

There’s a lot going around regarding Chiss names and linguistics these days, and it’s awesome! One question I see come up is: what if moving to a new family gives a Chiss a really stupid name?

Maybe the name means something dumb. Maybe it’s really hard to say. Maybe it just sounds weird.

My answer to this is: what if it can’t?

What if Chiss names can’t be stupid, by design?

Here’s my proposal:

Chiss names are made up of three parts. The first is the family name, which may change by joining another family. The second is a personal name, given at birth (presumably). The third part we know little of (in canon, there’s legends material but it’s been superseded and is no longer accurate). My favorite headcanon is the third part is aspirational. Parts can be added, such as the -odo ending.

Core names are a combination of these parts: Mitth’raw’nuru becomes Thrawn, Irizi’ar’alani becomes Ziara, Ufsa’mak’ro becomes Samakro.

We are never told what any of the family names or any other name component mean, if anything. But what if they do have meanings?

Being Chiss, and Cheunh being a complex tongue, every sound or syllable could be its own meaning.

For example: Mitth could mean “Honorable House of the Sun” or some such.

With the Th- meaning “honorable,” or “honor”, etc.

Thus, appending Th- to a core name wouldn’t change the name’s meaning, only add “honorable” to it, like a title in English. Likewise, the third name would add a suffix, with additions adding to that suffix.

I like the idea of Cheunh having multiple writing systems, including a logographic system like Chinese. I don’t speak or read Chinese, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but from what I’ve heard characters can be added to by adding strokes with certain meanings. So, changing the family name or adding a new suffix wouldn’t be difficult.

(I believe Chinese names can also be written in different ways to emphasize different connotations? Could be wrong on that. Please someone who knows how this works correct me.)

I also like the idea of Cheunh being tonal, especially given the brief discussion in Outbound Flight, and canonically has glottal stops. So, in Cheunh, no name would be unpronounceable, and would likely sound fine no matter how torturous the consonants to English speakers.

Thranto wedding designs !!!

In a lot of western military weddings, men often wear their dress uniforms and so that’s what I decided to put them in as a base. The dress uniform is a little fancier than a normal CDF uniform, featuring a sash, more embellished belt, gold epaulets - yes I spelled it wrong on the sheet lol - to display honor chains, and other gold details such as on the boots and gloves (not shown).

Thrawn being a member of one of the Ruling Families wears a burgundy robe over his uniform - burgundy being the Mitth family color - and a long, thick, embroidered cloak/cape custom to him (I like to think he designed it in his twenties, never thinking he’d ever wear it 🥺) The two also wear a gold Mitth family belt buckle.

I wanted Eli to have some Lysatran traditions and decided to go with the exchange of grass/grain wreaths that are made of local plants from their homeworlds. Eli then exchanges his Lysatran wreath with Thrawn’s wreath made out of plants from Rentor, with a vow along the lines of “my home will always be your home”.

To signify Eli’s transition into House Mitth, Thrawn will drape Eli in his cloak/cape - I did steal this from Game of Thrones, see Sansa and Tyrion’s wedding - that is uniquely his. I decided to go with the double snake design that (I think?) comes from the ring Thrawn receives in Chaos Rising.
