Untitled Cyberpunk Magical Girl Project characterization prompt response:
Original prompt by @gallusrostromegalus!
Tumblr media
OC Recap (left to right):
Suzi: Dance student, part-time magical girl/virtual celebrity, half-stoic, half-upbeat depending on the mood.
Kim: Botanist, semi-retired veteran magical girl and mentor, awkward “cool” mom with baggage.
Crash: Delinquent spirit, first magical girl, currently hyperactive virtual ghost, born troublemaker.
Nano: Rebellious slave class member in hiding, uses magical girl powers for personal investigations, comically deadpan.
HD: Gifted rich girl/conspiracy theorist unknowingly chosen to be a magical girl, quiet but eccentric personality.
A. On a scale of “is occasionally forced to bathe” to “Instagram model with sponsors to hoe for” how involved is your OC’s Skincare routine?
Suzi: She’s a teenage girl, so a bit. Even disregarding her online presence, she’s in the know of cosmetics just to look good to friends.
Kim: Very basic hydration and cleanliness, only gets special treatment if something’s actively acting up.
Crash: Currently doesn’t care due to being a virtual ghost. Didn’t care much in her physical life either except for concerts.
Nano: Very basic cleanliness; she’s very out of the loop of many things, optimal skincare included.
HD: Focused a lot. Part of it is casual access to high-brand cosmetics, part of it is natural obsession with cleanliness.
B. What are your OC’s food preferences (flavors/textures/spiciness/calories/ when and how they eat) and how did they get that way?
Suzi: Has a pretty varied middle-class palate, likes even mix of savory and sweet. Very fond of fish and rice (sushi of course) and sugary drinks (boba, lemon tea).
Kim: Very light diet. Just needs something only mildly flavorful like tea or natto rice she can easily have at work, sometimes forgets to eat in general.
Crash: Likes cheap/instant ramen and other fast foods; grew up on the stuff and hates the taste of “real” food. She also likes things spicy.
Nano: Currently expanding taste buds due to lifetime being served nutrient goop. Likes sweets, but only has them on occasion because they cause headaches (taiyaki’s pretty good).
HD: Regularly gets to enjoy high-quality “real” foods, but very frequently jumps to easier-to-access comfort foods like strawberry milk or curry rice.
C. What’s something pointless/petty/unimportant that IRRATIONALLY ANNOYS THE HELL out of your OC?
Suzi: When the train arrives earlier than scheduled, so she misses it and has to wait for the next.
Kim: Zoning out while steeping tea and realizing it’s cold after forgetting about it.
Crash: Anti-aliasing, and the inability to turn it off. NOOOO SMOOTHENIIIIIIING
Nano: Her senior chef’s taste in music. She recently got a job as his apprentice, and she can’t stand the pirate rock he blares in the kitchen. She hates the accents.
HD: Lacking the right word to articulate an emotion or idea she wants to express and being unable to look it up.
D. What’s your OC’s response to being asked for money by a homeless person?
Suzi: “Some other day.”
Kim: (quietly looks to her phone)
Crash: “Nah fam, not today.”
Nano: (completely ignores them)
HD: (quietly looks the other way)
E. Does your OC get lost easily? What do they do when they do get lost?
Suzi: Checks the skytrain routes and maps at the stations.
Kim: Knows her path from home to work enough to never get lost.
Crash: “Thanks, GPS!”
Nano: Checks street signs and looks for maps at skytrain stations.
HD: In order: check maps, call guardians for directions, ask strangers.
F. What would STOP your OC from Doing The Right Thing in a tense situation?
Suzi: If she’s in physical danger without her powers. She don’t punch above her weight.
Kim: If she has no personal stakes in the matter. She doesn’t like escalating conflict, she’s already tired as is.
Crash: If it’s a strictly physical conflict where she’s unable to interact.
Nano: If it’s none of her business. She’s in hiding; attention is bad.
HD: If she doesn’t have powers for it. She’s not even in her teens, fam
G. Realistically, could your OC (in their normal circumstances- i.e. at their own house/battlecamp/spaceship etc.) keep a small child alive for a week if they had to?  A Dog?  A Houseplant? A rock with a  smiley face painted on?
Suzi: She underestimates her ability to accommodate someone/something. She’d start off nervous, but she’d probably pull through.
Kim: Pretty well. She wants to ensure others are safe, she’s just very awkward at it.
Crash: Even in life, she was a mess, so probably not.
Nano: She’s only just learning to take care of herself among the surface world, give her some time.
HD: She’s like 12! She might take care of a plant just fine tho
H. If your OC had to take the S.A.T. tomorrow with one night to prep, how would they do?  both emotionally and academically.
Suzi: Print out practice tests, head to a cafe, get some boba, and hunker down.
Kim: Work at home, take a shower, prepare some tea, scented candles, and some ambient records.
Crash: Wait for Kim to take her to her apartment and force her to do the same thing.
Nano: Internet biiiiiinge. Get the taiyaki ready.
HD: In her room going over various books with some music playing, and probably with a tab open for streaming.
I. What would cause your OC to chose to do something petty/pointlessly cruel?
Suzi: If she’s good friends with the target and another friend dared her to, and/or if she stands to get free food from it.
Kim: If she’s REALLY had enough of you but doesn’t have it in her to tell it to your face.
Crash: If she thinks it’d be funny. It isn’t always funny, but when it is, it is.
Nano: If she’s really angry at you and thinks she can get away with it without notice.
HD: If she’s feeling especially exhausted and has briefly given up on being nice to you.
J. On a scale of “Complete and Justified nervous breakdown” to “Conquer The Entire Galaxy and become an Immortal God-Emperor”, how well would your OC handle being abducted by Aliens?
Suzi: “Oh shit.”
Kim: “Is this a spaceship?”
Crash: “Kickass!”
Nano: “Are you from The Corporatocracy?”
HD: “I was right!?”
K. What song is 100% guaranteed to get your OC beyond turnt and will be sung loudly and embarrassingly, either in public or the shower?
Suzi: “Crazy Crazy” by Yasutaka Nakata.
Kim: “Sad Machine” by Porter Robinson.
Crash: “Whole New World” by SOPHIE.
Nano: She’s not the singing type, but “Giving Bad People Good Ideas” by Death Grips gets it done.
HD: “Feel Good Inc.” by Gorillaz.
L. What perfectly-normal-to-them-thing does your OC do that confuses/pisses off/terrifies their neighbors?
Suzi: Dances to loud mixes in her room.
Kim: Very frequently lights candles or incense in her apartment.
Crash: She used to practice a lot of vocalizations, ie scream a whole lot.
Nano: Have virtually no furniture aside from a bed and table for her laptop.
HD: Own an entire floor of an apartment building.
O. How often does your OC “zone out” or do things on autopilot and how severe have the problems that have arisen from that been?
Suzi: Often, but basically only during boring times where nothing is happening, including stuff that could potentially cause problems.
Kim: Almost never when at work, but frequently gets contemplative when at home.
Crash: As a virtual entity, she’s very active and almost never blanks out. In physicality, CONSTANTLY.
Nano: She doesn’t exactly zone out so much as she gets locked into one sensation/action and is unused to the need to adjust on her own.
HD: She can get twitchy at the worst of times, her mind going on extended tangents if there isn’t a lot of stimuli.
P. How strong or weak is your OC’s Impulse control? What’s the worst thing that happened because of their Impulsivity or inability to be so?
Suzi: Generally gives things careful consideration, but if a prospect is extremely exciting, she may need a reminder to step back a bit.
Kim: Very mellow and not one to making particularly decisive decisions, unless it’s regarding someone’s safety, where she’s very firm.
Crash: Very impatient and prone to making bad decisions without thinking through them. Ever since becoming a ghost, she’s a little more careful for Kim’s sake, but still needs a lot of work.
Nano: Very methodical and calculative, but feels the need to make fast decisions if she decides she has no time to be careful.
HD: Very patient and careful, almost glacial in terms of getting her onto another mindset.
Q. How does your OC sabotage themselves?
Suzi: She’s forming a double-life as a civilian and as a Magica for excitement, but she isn’t fully realizing the consequences of it or what she must do in the future, potentially barreling into danger for a brief thrill.
Kim: She simultaneously wants to have a normal life away from supernatural shenanigans but is irreparably locked into it with her relationship with Crash, ironically denying herself closure by wanting nothing to do with her trauma.
Crash: Constantly seeks to rebel introduce excitement to the world, but is often dishonest about her own motivations, resulting in an inability to think through her plans or the consequences of her actions, some very deadly for herself.
Nano: Her extremely methodical and calculative approach to everything leads her to make an enemy out of everyone. Her inability to trust anyone to not screw up leaves her pretty ineffectual in her goals.
HD: She’s extremely smart and critical, but constantly traps herself in loops of obsessive paranoia, often isolating herself from anyone else to support her or give her better grounding.
S. How Dehydrated is your OC right now? Are they going to fix this?
Suzi: Keep a reusable water bottle for water, occasionally gets ice tea/coffee if she feels like treating herself.
Kim: Keeps a thermos of hot water/tea.
Crash: Currently NA, previously just gets water from the tap.
Nano: Usually gets her fresh cups at work, enjoys municipal tap water at home. Blame Crash.
HD: Fills a cold water mug from a filtered fridge.
T. What’s your OC smell like?  no, not that “Vanilla and Anxiety” evocative stuff, realistically.  Body odor? what have they been touching all day? When was their last shower? Did they put on any kind of artificial scent?
Suzi: Takes regular care of her hygiene and attends clean facilities, often showers with a peach fragrance that sticks with her daily.
Kim: Smells sanitized and like a dentist’s office when traveling from work, smells like tea and “herbal” everywhere else.
Crash: Like electrons. In life, she showered, but always smelled like a combo of light sweat and coffee.
Nano: Often times faintly like dirt, sometimes with a literal fish-y stench from work.
HD: Very presentable, often has the aroma of strawberry and bread.

Brassaï, the Outsider Who Photographed Paris after Dark
Tumblr media
Brassaï, Kiki de Montparnasse and her Friends, Thérèse Treize and Lily , ca. 1932. © Estate Brassaï Succession, Paris. Courtesy of the Estate Brassaï Succession, Paris.
In one of Brassaï’s most famous photographs, a man and a woman canoodle in the corner of a Parisian coffee house in the early 1930s, smoke curling from a lit cigarette between the woman’s fingers. Mirrors on either side of the couple’s well-coiffed heads reflect their loving looks and blur the surrounding restaurant. His jacket and her thick sweater suggest winter weather, from which this single, cozy booth offers refuge. Titled Couple d’amoureux dans un petit café, quartier Italie (Loving couple in a small cafe, Italy district), the photograph exudes lust and old-world glamour, exemplifying just what made the photographer’s vision so enduring; more than eight decades after its creation, the image remains as evocative and seductive as ever.
While Brassaï (1899–1984) was a veritable polymath—he wrote novels, sculpted, and painted throughout his career—his pictures of Paris at night remain his career-defining masterworks. Before World War II struck the city, he captured foggy avenues with bare trees, the gate to the Luxembourg Gardens, bridges, and street façades. He snapped pictures of the meat porters and kissing couples of the streets, and the giddy inhabitants of restaurants and lounges. Lights from cars, windows, hotel signs, snowy grounds, and watery reflections enhance the sense of drama in his dreamy nocturnal shots. In a 1968 catalogue for a Brassaï exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, novelist Lawrence Durrell wrote: “He is very much a child of Paris, and in some ways the city’s most faithful biographer.”

Yet a seminal stateside exhibition tells the larger story of both the man and his oeuvre. Organized by Fundación MAPFRE and former MoMA curator Peter Galassi, the show, entitled “Brassaï,” opened in Spain earlier this year and landed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) this month. The survey includes Brassaï’s pictures of street graffiti, female nudes, and his famous friends such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. Self-portraits also populate the galleries. One, On the boulevard Saint-Jacques (1930–32), even captures Brassaï in his element: He stands on a snowy Parisian street in a heavy coat and a brimmed hat, cigarette propped between his lips, peering into a tripod-mounted camera.
“We should never forget that ‘the eye of Paris,’ as Henry Miller called him, was a foreign eye,” writes Antonio Muñoz Molina in his catalogue essay for the show. Indeed, Brassaï wasn’t a native Frenchman, but a Hungarian born in Brassó, Transylvania (in modern-day Romania, which was previously under Austro-Hungarian rule). After fighting in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I and studying art at Berlin-Charlottenburg’s Academy of Fine Arts, the artist moved to Paris in 1924. There, in 1932, he changed his given name, Gyula Halász, to a doctored version of his hometown’s name—his roots as a foreigner remained crucial to his vision and identity. Working as a journalist, Brassaï quickly integrated into the city’s cultural milieu. Throughout the 1930s, he met Picasso, Henri Matisse, and the Surrealists. Altogether, they contributed to the art magazine Minotaure, edited by Surrealist forerunner André Breton.

In 1933, Brassaï published around 60 photographs in Paris de Nuit (Paris by Night), which accompanied text by French writer Paul Morand. The book was a quick hit, and Brassaï received new commissions for publications ranging from the erotic magazine Scandale to Harper’sBazaar. In 1935, he published his second book, Voluptés de Paris (Pleasures of Paris).

Despite his social clout and early professional successes, Brassaï still viewed himself as an outlander of sorts. “He was roaming a lot of the streets in the evenings, trying to really understand the communities, the activities that were taking place at night,” says Linde B. Lehtinen, a curator at SFMOMA. His photography wasn’t about exploiting Paris, but about assimilating to his chosen home.
Tumblr media

Even when the Germans invaded Paris during World War II, Brassaï refused to leave the country. He briefly fled to the French Riviera, but quickly returned to Paris, where his negatives (and inspiration) remained. When the allies liberated the city in 1944, Brassaï leaned out of his apartment window to watch—he was, as ever, the fearless voyeur. According to Lehtinen, the French mistakenly thought he was a German sniper and shot at him. They missed, but the bullet shattered Brassaï’s mirror. Of course, he took a picture to document the damage, which Lehtinen included in the show.
“Things were very dire then,” she says. “I think that was a big turning point for him.” The world that Brassaï had photographed with such adoration was gone, though he continued to live and work in France until his death in 1984. By the end of his life, he’d published 17 books and even produced one film, Tant qu’il y aura des bêtes (As long as there are beasts), which was released in 1955 and won a major prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Of course, Brassaï was just one of many photographers captivated by Paris. Fellow Hungarian native André Kertész and Frenchman Henri Cartier-Bresson were two of the major talents working with the same subject material in the 1930s. “What set Brassaï apart from Kertész, and indeed from all the photographers of Paris,” writes David Travis in At the Edge of Light: Thoughts on Photography and Photographers, on Talent and Genius, “is that he wanted to picture what was obscured from everyday view, what was dangerous, and, most of all, what was forbidden.” Brassaï’s camera lingered on prostitutes, gang members, and the queer community in the interwar era—he gained entrance to Le Monocle, a lesbian nightclub in Montmartre; and Suzy’s, a brothel, among other underground venues.
“We’re looking at these views of 1930s Parisian society,” says Lehtinen, “but they’re also these incredible reflections on broader themes of community, labor, sexuality, gender, class, solitude…alienation, strangeness.” The surface glamour and appealing sinfulness of Brassaï’s pictures may initially captivate us. Yet it’s their deeply emotive, cinematic quality that transforms his subjects into characters with intergenerational appeal—none more so than the city of Paris itself.

My Island Batik Boxes - What's Inside?
As an Island Batik Ambassador one of our biggest events is the opening of our semi-annual boxes of goodies from Island Batik.
To celebrate this early Christmas-like event, each Ambassador makes a box opening video. The videos reveal what’s inside of course—a preview of upcoming Island Batik collections and the latest tools from our program partners.
Don’t miss any of the excitement this year—new quilts, blog hops, free patterns and for sale ones, and giveaways! You’ll find ways to follow at the top of my sidebar.
As usual I received two huge boxes from Island Batik filled with the freshest batiks just now arriving in stores. Gorgeous! The boxes are also filled with great things from our program partners—awesome tools and accessories for quilting that you can’t do without.
To shoot my videos I enlist the help of my daughter. Together, we gather quilts and pin them to my design wall, set up the studio lights, and ready the camera. Then we gather the items in the boxes and prepare them to be presented one by one during the video.
We’ve also planned a surprise or two to liven things up.
After we shoot the video, Katerina edits it all together and adds little fun flourishes. The result is below. Go ahead and watch! I’ll wait. <grin>
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HtatuCujRFk" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Now wasn’t that fun? The generosity and support I’ve received from Island Batik and the program sponsors is overwhelming. I’m humbled and so very grateful.
Let’s take a closer look at what I got!
Stash Busters
Island Batik included two Stash Builders in my box. Stash Builders are an easy way to build your stash is a wide selection of batiks. They are also an easy way for you to create a scrappy batik quilt. Each Stash Builder contains a mix of batiks in a particular color, such as green and violet.
A Stash Builder roll includes four 5” x WOF strips; there are 5 rolls in each pack giving you almost 3 yards of batiks! To see how I’ve used these strips in the past, take a look at my January challenge and my March challenge.
Want a chance to win a few Stash Builder rolls? Be sure to enter my giveaway at the end of this post.
Featured Spring Collection
My featured Spring collection is Midnight Dazzle. I’ll be designing a quilt for the August blog hop using this beautiful collection.
I was sent two fat-quarters of all the fabrics in the collection. In the background here you can also see the coordinating fabrics Island Batik sent from the Foundations (Solids, Basics, Blenders). I received half yards of each of those. In addition, I was sent 2 yards of two coordinates (one light, one dark) also from the Foundations to use as possible backgrounds for the quilt I design.
Neutral
Island Batik always sends along a lovely neutral batik that I can use as a background in my quilt designs. This time they sent Doughnut—a lovely creamy tan.
Solids
Island Batik has been making solid batiks for a few years now, and I simply love them! Lovely rich colors that are deep and solid—no show-through here! If you are a lover of solids for your quilts you really need to try these solids!
Island Batik included some lovely solids with the Spring and Summer Coordinates (scroll down to see) plus neutral solids in grey, black and white—the perfect background for a modern quilt.
Studio 180 Ruler
Studio 180 Design is a challenge partner. Our August challenge is to create a quilt using the Studio 180 Design ruler we were sent. I got the Rapid Fire Hunter’s Star ruler. They also sent the book Hunter’s Star Hidden Treasures to fill my head with ideas on how to use a Hunter’s Star. I’ve been wanting to make a Hunter’s Star quilt for quite some time so I can’t wait to get started!
Deb Tucker from Studio 180 Design creates clever rulers that help you make over-sized blocks fast, and to trim them to perfection for show stopping quilts. Check out her other rulers here.
Aurifil Threads
Aurifil is a program partner and they sent a box of coordinating threads for a thread challenge later this year. I love the quality of Aurifil—how little lint it produces, how strong a stitch it makes and how precise.
The box they sent is from their Color Builders program, a thread of the month that you subscribe to. They sent a 40 wt. collection called Red Panda, inspired by the fur of that endangered animal.
BYANNIE
ByAnnie is another challenge partner. Like last year, we’ll be challenged to make a ByAnnie bag or tote using Island Batiks from a Spring 2021 collection.
For the challenge, we selected a ByAnnie pattern and batiks from a specific collection we were assigned for this challenge. ByAnnie then selected zippers, mesh, hardware, batting, strapping, and fusible for the bag we chose.
THE SURPRISE BUNDLE
Also included in my box was a surprise bundle from a Summer 2021 collection. The bundle is wrapped so I can’t show you what’s in it just yet. The Summer 2021 collections will make their debut during our second blog hop in November.
Be sure to mark your calendar for November so you don’t miss the parade of Summer 2021 collections across the Ambassador’s websites and my quilt, made with my Summer 2021 collection. And yes, there are no purples this time so that’s a challenge for me I guess except not really because the collection they sent me is yummy! (even without purple <grin>)
Coordinates for Spring and Summer 2021 Collections
Island Batik typically sends a grouping of half-yard coordinates for each of the collections in our boxes. These coordinates are pulled from the Basics, Blenders, and Solids collections. Batiks in these collections are designed to be useful staples in your stash because they go with so many designer batik collections. Also, you should have no problem finding Basics, Blenders, and Solids at quilt stores that carry Island Batiks.
The bundle on the right with yellow, orange, browns and blues coordinate with the Surprise fabrics from the Summer 2021 collection I was sent and your only clue as to what might be inside. Twist my arm and I’ll tell you that the browns and blues go more closely with the collection than the pop of yellow and orange. I can also tell you that the collection is absolutely gorgeous and I’m super lucky to be tasked with the joy of designing a quilt with it.
The bundle on the left with the greens and blues coordinates with the featured Spring 2021 collection I was sent. Again, that collection (Midnight Dazzle) is simply stunning. Scroll back for another view.
Hobbs Batting
Hobbs is a program partner, and they always send a selection of their high quality battings. I truly love using Hobbs—lovely drape, easy and smooth to quilt, and washes like a dream!
Hobbs included one Queen-size Thermore batting, one Throw-size Tuscany Cotton Wool batting, one Queen-size Heirloom Premium 80/20 Fusible Cotton Poly Blend batting, one Queen-size Heirloom Premium 80/20 Cotton Poly Blend batting, and one set of 2-1/2” Fusible Batting Strips.
Each batting has it’s own particular use. The 80/20 batts are my go to since they blend cotton with polyester for a soft, drapable, easily quiltable quilt. The fusible type saves time with pin-basting.
Thermore is a polyester batting created through a patented process that results in a super thin light weight quilt. Originally developed for garment making, it’s the perfect batt to use when looking for something light weight and soft to the touch such as a wall hanging, garment, or baby quilt.
Tuscany Cotton Wool is my go-to when I want a light weight warm quilt. And oh the softness and lovely drape! By blending cotton with wool you reduce the shrinkage and problems associated with a pure wool batt. The result is perfection.
The 2-1/2” fusible strips are perfect for small projects requiring strips of batting, such as woven projects, strip rugs, and tote straps. Oh so easy to use and a real time-saver.
The Unboxing Schedule
The Island Batik Ambassador unboxing videos are scheduled so you won’t miss a thing! The fun begins today (July 21st) with the first three Ambassadors sharing their boxes (including me!) Here’s the rest of the schedule.
Every Ambassador receives a different collection of batiks in their box, so be sure to visit each Ambassador in turn to watch their videos. You won’t believe the beauties you’ll see!
Note: The videos each day are released throughout the day, so the link may not work at first. Each day a video is released at 8 AM PST, 12 PM PST and 3 PM PST. I’m in the Eastern time zone so my video will be released at 3 PM PST or 6 PM EST.
Also I’ve been told that there may be some last-minute changes to the schedule so I’ll be updating the links as needed each day.

lantern, frost, harvest, ghost
Sgjdsbkmbjk sorry for taking awhile to answer these. You asked some tough ones!
“lantern: how did you meet your best friend? what were your first impressions of each other?”
I don’t really have one best friend. I met my three oldest and closest friends in grade school and we bonded at third-grade recess over reading and grandiose delusions of fame and obsessively discussing which breed of dragon listed in this book of dragons that we wanted to own when we were older.
“frost: if you could give some advice to your younger self, what would you say?”
@ middle-school me: It’s okay to embrace your individuality and take pride in the things that make you “weird,” but you’d be happier and way less of a douche if you stopped looking down on other people for interests that are different from yours, especially the “girly” ones. Get off your ass and socialize with people other than your three friends, idiot. Your writing is both better and worse than you think it is. You won’t always hate math. Don’t do That One Thing because it’ll turn out completely unexpectedly and you’ll spend the rest of your life feeling like an asshole for it. Also ur gay sweetie lol.
“harvest: what fictional character do you most identify with? Why?”
THIS IS THE HARDEST GODDAMN QUESTION. I don’t really think of characters being relatable so much as I focus on how much they interest or engage me. Uhhhh Jane Porter from the Disney version of Tarzan is always a #mood, I guess. And maybe Suzy Bishop from Moonrise Kingdom in a way? Oh, as a kid I vibed really hard with Inez from Cyberchase, though that was partly because I looked exactly fucking like her.
“ghost: is there someone you miss having in your life?”
A few people come to mind. I wish I’d stayed in better contact with the Ancient Greek teacher I had in high school, since she was wonderful and absolutely loved me and was a pretty great mentor for awhile…though I suppose it’s not too late to reach out again. I also sometimes find myself thinking about friends I made for, like, one summer at nature camp in like 2007. Like just out of the blue I’ll remember how we always sat next to each other on the bus or that one specific inside joke we had about that time in the canoe, and I’ll regret the fact that I never saw them again after that summer. I guess that’s the way things go sometimes and you won’t end up being lifelong friends with everyone you ever had a connection with, but it still feels a little bittersweet. On a similar note, I don’t necessarily miss her, but I do wonder what my life would’ve been like if I’d stayed friends with [girl that I was extremely close to in like the second through the fourth grade and in hindsight had a massive baby crush on lol].
Thanks for the asks!!! I ended up writing a lot more than I thought I would lol.

Timestamp #TW1: Everything Changes
Torchwood: Everything Changes (1 episode, s01e01, 2006)
Evolving from Excalibur, a science-fiction crime drama idea from Russell T. Davies, Torchwood was developed as a post-watershed (mature/adult audience) companion to Doctor Who. It was the first spin-off for the franchise since K9 and Company twenty-five years earlier.
The series (and this story) begins with murder. PC Gwen Cooper and her fellow officers are investigating the crime scene, but are quickly escorted away as Torchwood arrives. Led by Captain Jack Harkness, the team of Doctor Owen Harper, Suzie Costello, and Doctor Toshiko Sato get to work. Gwen, meanwhile, moves to higher ground in a parking garage to get a better view.
We’ve seen two of these characters before: Captain Jack last appeared in The Parting of the Ways, and Tosh chased a modified pig-alien around a morgue with the Ninth Doctor in Aliens of London.
Jack waxes about contraceptives in the rain as Suzie puts a metal gauntlet on her hand and examines the corpse. The gauntlet shocks the corpse back to life for two minutes, during which time the team interrogates the dead man for clues. The victim didn’t see who stabbed him, and Jack’s questions about death also prove fruitless. The team is frustrated and Gwen is startled when Jack asks her for advice. Gwen responds by running away.
Gwen arrives home later and joins her boyfriend, Rhys Williams, in front of a television drama as they catch up on the day. They go to bed, but Gwen spends the night sleepless. The next day, she asks Yvonne to look up Jack Harkness before taking coffee to the detectives investigating the murder. She and her partner respond to a bar brawl and suffers a blow to the head. At the hospital, she notes a familiar figure in a blue coat racing up the stairs and gives chase, but she stops at the top floor because it is sealed in plastic. She asks a porter about the seal, but he’s no help, so she breaks it and investigates.
She finds what she assumes to be a man wearing a mask – a standard Doctor Who alien, yeah? – and asks about the man in the coat. The porter returns to update Gwen and is soon eaten by the creature. The Torchwood team springs into action as Jack escorts Gwen from the room. When Gwen goes back outside, the Torchwood team drives away so she gives chase in her patrol car.
Her partner is left behind at the hospital.
She runs the license plates as Yvonne gives her an update on Jack Harkness and his history. The chase ends at Wales Millennium Center, but Gwen loses the team when she looks away. Control has no record of the license plate, and Gwen and her partner – he walked all the way there – can find no evidence of where the team went. Also, there are no missing porters at the hospital. Dismayed, Gwen goes home where she lies to Rhys and continues her investigation of the Millennium Center.
She follows a hunch and visits Jubilee Pizza where she learns that they frequently deliver to Torchwood. She orders a pizza and hand delivers it to the address on file. Ianto Jones points her down a secret passage and Gwen arrives at the Hub in Torchwood Three, home to the Cardiff team. She spots a water feature in the center of the room, a severed hand bubbling away in a container, and the team who are all apparently ignoring her as a joke.
They tell her that they have been watching her stalking them for the last three hours. They also explain how they erased the evidence of the porter’s murder. As a pterodactyl squawks overhead, Jack offers to show her the murderer. It’s the creature from the hospital, commonly referred to as a Weevil by the team, which is part of a group living in the sewers.
Returning to the Hub, Jack makes introductions to the team despite Gwen’s protestations that Torchwood is classified. Jack hands out job assignments before escorting Gwen out via the scenic route. They rise up on a platform into Millennium Center, shrouded in a perception filter. Jack presumes that it’s because “there was once a dimensionally transcendental chameleon circuit placed right on this spot, which welded its perception properties to a spatial-temporal rift” – we call it Boom Town – but otherwise it’s just cool. They head to a local bar where Jack challenges Gwen’s lack of belief with the undeniable evidence of the Christmas Invasion and the Battle of Canary Wharf. After a little back and forth, including Jack’s revelation that Torchwood scavenges alien technology to prepare for a future invasion, Jack dissuades Gwen of the idea that Torchwood is trying to solve the stabbing murders. They’re just trying to figure out the gauntlet, and the more violent the murder, the better for the device.
Jack gives her a little trivia: Torchwood One was Canary Wharf in London, Torchwood Two is in Glasgow, Torchwood Three is this team in Cardiff, and Torchwood Four has vanished. Jack also reveals that he drugged Gwen’s drink in order to erase her memory and maintain the team’s secrecy. She races home to jot down as much information as possible before she collapses. Ianto hacks into her computer and erases the file.
Oh, and the idea that all that alien technology is supposed to stay in the base? Tosh, Owen, and Susie have all ignored that mandate. Tosh scans a copy of A Tale of Two Cities with one touch and uploads it to her computer. Owen tries to pick up a girl (and ends up in a threesome) with an alien pheromone spray. Suzie uses the gauntlet to resurrect a dead fly.
Owen’s a bit of a git, honestly.
Rhys wakes Gwen the next morning with coffee and a kiss, concerned that she was drinking after a head wound. Later at work, Yvonne reminds her about Captain Jack Harkness. Gwen goes up to the detective offices and spots the mock-up of the murder weapon, an image that haunts her all day as images of her lost trip to the Hub flit through her subconscious. In her home office, she spots a brochure for Millennium Center with a note scrawled on it: “Remember”.
Gwen returns to Millennium Center and finds Suzie, who produces the murder weapon with the hope of breaking Gwen’s amnesia. Suzie pulls a gun, remarks that only Gwen can make the link, and reveals that although she loves her job it is driving her mad. She killed three people in order to get practice with the gauntlet. During her confession, Jack comes up the lift, presumably hidden by the perception filter. Suzie can see through it and shoot Jack in the head before turning the gun on Gwen, but Jack rises up behind her to stop the threat.
Suzie decides her own fate by committing suicide.
Gwen remembers, Ianto puts the gauntlet in storage, the rest of the team surrenders their illicit tech, Suzie goes into the Torchwood morgue, and Jack is immortal. Jack was made immortal by Bad Wolf, and he’s in search of the right kind of Doctor to help explain it. He asks Gwen to keep it quiet before asking her to join Torchwood.
She accepts as the pterodactyl flies overhead.
As pilots go, this was a great one. It’s dark and moody, establishing the direction and atmosphere for the series to come. We get to catch up with Captain Jack again, though the mystery of where and when he’s been since he encountered Bad Wolf is still a mystery. I also enjoy how we are in Gwen’s shoes for this story, uncovering the mystery as she does.
Since this is a spin-off and not primarily set in the Doctor’s timeline, there will not be a regeneration handicap. Not that it needs one at any rate.
Rating: 4/5 – “Would you care for a jelly baby?”
UP NEXT – Torchwood: Day One

BLUE MOON by Maud Dromgoole Bread and Roses Until 13th January 7.30 The Crown Inn, Old Oxted 15th – 18th Jan 8pm ‘sparky acting, tight directing and a well-drawn relationship’ ★★★1/2 An older woman meets a nervous younger man in a pub and money exchanges hands but all is not what it seems. In order to impress the girl of his dreams twenty-year old Matthew needs to learn to play poker so he engages woman of the world Suzie to teach him. Over wine, beer and banter the pair debate the finer points of various games and betting systems and slowly get to know each other. Suzie gently teases Matthew and the pair forms an unlikely friendship. Outside the cosy pub, however the world is changing for the worse. Through recorded news bulletins we learn about an increase in terrorist attacks, a restless population and the reintroduction of wild wolves into the British habitat. A dark tone creeps into the characters’ banter and a tipping point must surely come soon. Lucy Linger directs the play with a light but deft touch which puts zing into Maud Dromgoole’s already sparkling dialogue. The audience are seated in casual groups in the pub setting, silent observers as the stories are slowly revealed as each card is turned and bets are placed. As Suzie, Victoria Porter brings a real warmth and humour to her character enjoying being in the emotional driving seat in this relationship. Owen Frost as Matthew treads the line between gauche and passionate with skill and there’s a genuine warmth between the two. Dromgoole’s skill with dialogue is undeniable and she creates two very different characters with depth and affection. There’s a nice contrast between the ordinariness of the pub and the outside world which is being crushed by the twin nightmares of human and animal overthrow. We learn very little about why the outside world is collapsing and apart from a rather startling trip to the supermarket and the departure of the object of Matthew’s desire, this thread is left largely unexplored. Thanks to some sparky acting, tight directing and a well-drawn relationship that reaches a thrilling denouement this play works but somehow still feels like a piece of the jigsaw puzzle is missing somewhere. Blue Moon by Maud Dromgoole Directed by Lucy Linger Presented by Threadbare Theatre Company Bread and Roses until 13th January 7.30 https://www.breadandrosestheatre.co.uk/blue-moon.html The Crown Inn, Old Oxted 15th – 18th Jan 8pm Siân Rowland is a playwright and comedy writer represented by Kitson Press. Her five star reviewed play Gazing at a Distant Star ran at the Edinburgh Fringe as a Greenwich Theatre production.

Let Another Year Begin!
I could hardly wait to share my big news with you—I’ve been selected as an Island Batik Ambassador for 2021!
This is my fifth year as an Ambassador and I’m very flattered. Island Batik is so generous and supportive of its Ambassadors that it’s a pleasure to represent them even in my small way.
Let me tell you more about this year’s program and what’s ahead for you!
Unboxing Day
Island Batik Ambassadors get sent several huge boxes two times each year, filled with batiks and goodies from our program partners. We then share the contents of our boxes through an unboxing video.
Like last year, the unboxing videos are scheduled so you won’t miss a thing! The fun begins on January 20th with the first three Ambassadors sharing their boxes. My day is January 20th so I get to start things off with two of my fellow Ambassadors. I can’t wait to share the newest batiks and lovelies from our program partners!
I’ll publish the complete schedule of the unboxing videos soon so be sure to follow me so you won’t miss out. You’ll find ways to follow at the top of my sidebar.
Program Sponsors
Let me present our program sponsors - companies that have sent us goodies to share with you along with the luscious Island Batiks. See the two boxes below? I just got them and boy are they full! And there’s another box of goodies on the way. Wow!
AccuQuilt
AccuQuilt is a program partner again this year, and I’m ecstatic because I love their die cutters so much! In fact, I love them so that I couldn’t resist buying more dies over Christmas during the sales.
If you have a AccuQuilt cutter you might enjoy my AccuQuilt GO! Ready patterns. Look for them in my shop.
This year we have a monthly challenge that will feature the latest AccuQuilt GO! dies. Be sure to watch for it!
Aurifil
Aurifil is also returning as a program partner. Like last year, there is a special monthly challenge featuring Aurifil and their beautiful threads! Be sure to look for it because you’ll be so inspired.
In addition, I’ve signed up for the Aurifil Color Builders collection. This is a monthly program where you receive a set of three color coordinated threads and a free pattern. Be sure to follow me as I share what I receive each month!
Hobbs
Hobbs is returning as a program partner as well and I’m looking forward to trying out any new batts they send. I love Hobbs batts and have used them for years. The drapability and feel of their high quality batting makes them a must-have.
Schmetz
Schmetz is also returning as a partner this year. The needles they sent us last year to try were winners in my book, and now a staple in my sewing room. Stay tuned to hear what I learn as I try them out.
Challenge Partners
In addition to program sponsors who fill our bags with goodies, through our challenges we’ll be working with several wonderful designers. I can’t wait to be inspired by these industry leaders!
Studio 180 Design
I enjoyed working with Deb Tucker and her Studio 180 Design rulers last year and can’t wait to do it again. With her rulers you can make precise block units so easily, it makes me wonder why I’ve been struggling without them all these years. Stay tuned for the Studio 180 challenge!
ByAnnie
Last year ByAnnie sponsored a challenge and it was a popular one! If you’ve never made any of her bags or totes you are missing out. Her patterns are very clear and with her supportive videos you too can make a designer bag with ease. I’m looking forward to the challenge this year because her patterns are always so much fun. Be sure to watch for the ByAnnie challenge!
Blog Hops
Like last year, there are four blog hops featuring Island Batiks.
Yes, four times this year you’ll be able to visit each of the Island Batik Ambassadors and see special projects featuring the latest batiks just arriving in stores. There are also giveaways during the blog hops so be sure to follow me so you don’t miss out!
The first blog hop is coming in February and it features charity quilts like this one which I made for the survivors of the Pulse nightclub tragedy. I don’t know the parameters of the challenge just yet, but I look forward to finding a charity and creating a quilt just for them.
