Mirror image
Adjacent to my bed, which was just a mattress thrown haphazardly onto the floor, and hanging on my closet door, I had a mirror, floor-length, and up to the ceiling. It was no different from any mirror appearance-wise. But I knew better, I’ve seen what that mirror can do to someone, can do to me, more times than I can count.
During the day time, it was unassuming, nice even. It was just another part of my bedroom that, honestly, wasn’t used all that much. More often than not I felt no need to plan my outfits in front of that mirror, what good would it be to me anyway. The mirror would only change come nightfall, and it didn’t care how good I looked in my clothes.
The way it changes is extremely subtle, apparently unnoticeable to anyone else but me. It always stayed the same appearance-wise. but it would never let you if you’re unlucky enough to look at yourself in it at night. You never come out of that mirror looking quite the same.
I often wonder if there are other predatory mirrors out there. Mirrors that take in your image and distort it to drive you mad until you lose a piece of yourself to the thing. Maybe it’s just one creature in all reflective surfaces. The more I think about it I see it in shop windows while I walk by. Jumping from surface to surface. Maybe it’s one thing that lies in wait for when I’m most vulnerable. It would make sense for it to wait in the bedroom mirror the most.
Vulnerability must be a big thing to do with it. When there are people everywhere and I’m trying desperately to just blend in. It just has to make me obvious, not quite fitting in where I should, subtle differences to make look wrong and upsetting to everyone else. I once thought it was only in my head and I was going crazy, but I’ve heard crowds whispering. “What is that thing?” I hear while walking down the street. Forcing me to run back home, hiding until I feel safe again, I could easily get hurt by somebody. People do seem to be afraid of perceived differences after all.
On those unfortunate nights when I find myself lured in by its spell, it can take days, weeks even, to find a semblance of myself again. But really, it has some sort of permanent control on me. When I see myself In there I almost don’t notice when I see my eyes roving over every inch of my form. I always turn into the same monster, my hip bones widen to the point that they no longer resemble human proportions, each of my legs balloon to the size of my torso, which now resembles a wasp’s while my face is just a mess of almost human features. I have become monstrous, and with a sob, I realize I’m trapped again.
