A couple new observations from my annual viewing of Wait Until Dark...
~Near the end of the film, when Susy tries to bluff her way out of the apartment, she tells Mike that she would have remembered about the doll if "that awful Sgt. Carlino" hadn't been hounding her...and Carlino looks so offended. First of all, dude, how did you expect her to feel about you? Secondly, it's an interesting layer to his character...as he used to be a cop, and at some point, left the force in disgrace (one can assume)...and that reaction shows that, at some point, he really did want to be a good police officer and help people...but he ended up as a con artist instead.
~When Susy calls the "6th precinct" to speak to Roat, Jr., Mike taps on the van window to tell Roat about the call...and when Roat exits the van, he looks so annoyed. You can tell he's getting frustrated with Susy and this entire charade, and he just wants his damn heroin. But all he shows on the outside is a quick gritting of his teeth.
~When Roat shows up as Roat Jr. for the first time (in that terrible wig), I noticed that he wasn't wearing both of his gloves, which I found odd...especially since he's so careful about fingerprints. Granted, he's holding a hat the entire time, but you never know. Then I noticed that he's wearing a wedding ring. But for who? Susy can't see it, and Mike and Carlino know it's all a ruse. Yes, he uses the costumes to make sure that his true face isn't seen by anyone outside the apartment (or Gloria), but the wedding band is such a small detail. It really shows how Roat is so dedicated to playing these characters. A true theatre kid..."if I'm playing a married man, I need a wedding ring." And I double-checked, he's not wearing one at any other point in the movie (though you do see him wearing one in a couple promo shots).
~And probably the biggest thing I noticed...after Susy has doused Roat with gasoline and starts lighting those matches, I saw that Roat was still holding that scarf...and I thought "wow, he's committed to that being his murder weapon, he didn't let it go after all that." But then I re-watched the scene and realized that when she strikes that first match, he is holding it in both hands like he was reaching out to strangle her with it. I never noticed that before! I think I always saw the fire from the match first and then Roat falling backwards. But he was actually trying to find her in the pitch dark to just end it all then and there!
Also, I love Roat/Alan Arkin's accent. The way he says "photographer" always makes me smile. I almost think he leaned into his accent more than he normally would have in other roles.

i wanna hear about the play actually! can u tell me about it? (like. everything/hj/silly)
yes yes I can indeed tell you about it :) :) I'm really normal about this play !! this is really fucking long by the way uh. definitely the longest post I have ever made
i explained the synopsis in an earlier ask so there's that, gonna put a cut because this might be long !
spoilers for wait until dark both the play and the movie
tw for mentions of violence, death by strangling, knives, heroin, and discussion of dead bodies from a costuming perspective
THERE WAS MEANT TO BE A CUT HERE BUT IT DELETED AND I CANT PUT IT BACK AHH
okay so this is mostly going to be about the characters and the costume designs we have so far. so we're in the second week meaning we've started analysis and characterizing through mood boards and seen the cast read through the full play (we <3 table read day) next week we do measurement day and then consultations with the actors and get the final mood boards approved by the director
basic plot summary a bit more expansive than the synopsis- harry roat, a con man (the main villain) is hired by a woman named lisa to steal a doll (full of diamonds, heroin in the original movie) back from a new york couple that has ended up with it by accident. roat enlists the help of carlino, a brawny ex-policeman, and mike, a kind ex-marine by drawing them to Sam (an ex-marine and photographer) and Suzy's (a fierce and strong blind woman) apartment where he has murdered Lisa and hung her in a closet while sam and suzy are away. roat blackmails mike and carlino by making them suspects in lisa's murder. mike's involvement with roat is not revealed to the audience until later. a recurring theme in the play is sam's desire to have Suzy be independent and not rely on Gloria or him to do things for her. as a result, she is extremely precise and independent.
suzy is visited by all three con men in quick succession while sam is away, and mike gains her trust under the guise that he worked with Sam in the Marines. however, the con men misjudge Suzy to be extremely dumb because of her blindness, and, with the help of her neighbor Gloria (a tomboyish 13 year old girl that helps with the groceries sometimes and has a pretty bad family life), she figures out the plot to steal back the doll and sends Gloria to get Sam and bring him back home. they find the doll and hide it in the icebox.
eventually, mike is murdered by roat as he frantically tries to explain to suzy that she is being tricked, and roat chases Suzy around the apartment in the dark (Suzy and Gloria have turned out all the lights and disabled the fuse box so only Suzy knows how to navigate the apartment) as he tries to find the doll, threatening her in increasingly horrifying ways and using a towel to keep the icebox open so he can use the light to see her. eventually, Suzy manages to stab him several times and lodge herself in a safe space behind the icebox to hide and wait for sam. when sam and gloria finally come home, they finds roat slowly bleeding out and Suzy trapped and exhausted behind the icebox, pinned in place. finally Suzy manages to get up to unplug the icebox. she does this by herself, without sam's help.
other really interesting things about this play 1. it's only 3 scenes- scene 1 is roat blackmailing carlino and mike, scene 2 is Sam leaving for work and Suzy meeting mike, carlino, and roat (also when we meet Gloria). act 2 is Suzy and Gloria figuring out the con and all the other stuff. 2. there are no set changes- it's entirely set in Sam and Suzy's apartment 3. the use of lighting is really good- the con men often use the apartment's venetian blinds to signal to each other, the main conflict not being what's inside the doll but rather if roat is able to overpower Suzy to get it, the entire last like 10 minutes of the play where roat and Suzy fight happening either entirely in the dark (the audience will be able to see vague shapes but not much else) or with the only light being a single beam from the icebox 4. we have to costume a fucking dead body??? and she has to be hung. so there's either gonna be a mannequin or some heathers movie fake hanging type shit with lack of air makeup. also there's a lot a lot a lot of knife wounds and bruises that will have to be quick changes. we have to have live matches onstage (the actors have to be able to strike them quickly) and real cigarettes that smoke (Suzy needs to be able to smell the smoke) and a working fridge and running water. roat throws a switchblade across the room and it sticks in the wall but the switchblade comes out of a tiny porcelain figure that he calls Geraldine. roat has to speak perfect italian. we have to have access to a shitton of 40s photography equipment for Sam??? so much is going on. 5. our actor for roast is FUCKING TERRIFYING. literally no hate ever for them because they proceeded to give one of the best performances I have ever seen at the READ THROUGH, I was pissing myself in sheer terror, and then I went and congratulated them after the table read and they spoke in their kinda broken English telling me how much they appreciated it and then shook my hand!! and said they were excited to work with me !!
now for me to talk about my babygirl Sam. there are a lot of babygirls in this play. from most to least babygirl: 1. Sam 2. Mike 3. Carlino 4. Suzy 5. Roat 6. Gloria think of Suzy as having 0 babygirl, Sam has 10 babygirl and Gloria has -10 babygirl. hope this makes sense.
anyway we're doing mood boards so here's the one that I worked on for Sam because I fucking love sam (he's such a small character that only one person works on him)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and his character description ^^
here's why sam hendrix should be your new babygirl. 1. he treats his wife right. they r so sweet to each other I could go on and on and on about how cute they are. they argue in a playful way. he encourages her to grow and fend for herself and this ends up saving her life. she helps with developing his photos. he takes her to the movies and describes them for her. they trust each other soso much and they love talking to each other and Gloria is their adopted child. I don't make the rules. 2. he's a photographer!! he does weddings ! and babies ! because he needs to photograph happy things after coming back from war. their first date was in the baby ward at the hospital :) 3. he's a fucking wet cat. his desk is disorganized as hell and he spends all his time in his darkroom. his kenergy is unmatched. he would do anything for his wife. he's smart and funny! he definitely has big sad brown eyes. he really likes interior design. he adopted the local feral cat (gloria) and they love eachother. he's my little wet cat I have adopted him.
yes I am babygirlifying him. yes I am projecting because we both like photography. no I will not be taking criticism.
anyway here's some other pictures from mood boards and shit

B-5 : Oscars 2023 Predictions - A Film fan's perspective (Part - 3)
We are just a week away from the 95th Academy Awards, a.k.a. The Oscars®. It will happen on March 13 at 5:30 PM IST. The celebrations of the Oscar season are at their peak. Amid the fun and excitement, here's a look at the final segment of the technical award categories and our predictions of the winners:-
Tumblr media
Best Sound
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Viktor Prášil, Frank Kruse, Markus Stemler, Lars Ginzel, and Stefan Korte
Avatar: The Way of Water – Julian Howarth, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Dick Bernstein, Christopher Boyes, Gary Summers, and Michael Hedges
The Batman – Stuart Wilson, William Files, Douglas Murray, and Andy Nelson
Elvis – David Lee, Wayne Pashley, Andy Nelson, and Michael Keller
Top Gun: Maverick – Mark Weingarten, James H. Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon, and Mark Taylor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prediction(s): All Quiet on the Western Front/Top Gun: Maverick
It's usually a war/military movie or a musical that wins the Sound award. Topgun: Maverick seems to be a strong competitor because of the Action-filled dogfighting scenes and final combat in the climax. Western Front is also a strong contender because of the battle scenes.
Best Production Design
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Production Design: Christian M. Goldbeck; Set Decoration: Ernestine Hipper
Avatar: The Way of Water – Production Design: Dylan Cole and Ben Procter; Set Decoration: Vanessa Cole
Babylon – Production Design: Florencia Martin; Set Decoration: Anthony Carlino
Elvis – Production Design: Catherine Martin and Karen Murphy; Set Decoration: Bev Dunn
The Fabelmans – Production Design: Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Karen O'Hara
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
From the 1950s to the 1970s, the sets well-exhibit the story of the King of Rock n Roll - from his home to the carnivals to the stadiums to the TV and recording studios to the lavishing hotels of Las Vegas.
Best Cinematography
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – James Friend
Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths – Darius Khondji
Elvis – Mandy Walker
Empire of Light – Roger Deakins
Tár – Florian Hoffmeister
Tumblr media
Prediction: All Quiet on The Western Front
It's because the camera work of James Friend captures the horrors of the First World War. The fighting in broad daylight is realistic and gives chills every time you see it.
Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Heike Merker and Linda Eisenhamerová
The Batman – Naomi Donne, Mike Marino, and Mike Fontaine
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Camille Friend and Joel Harlow
Elvis – Mark Coulier, Jason Baird, and Aldo Signoretti
The Whale – Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Anne Marie Bradley
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
Is it possible to make a movie on Elvis Presley without his puffed hair and sideburns? Hairstyles play a crucial role in his era of the 1950s-70s.
Best Costume Designing
Nominees:
Babylon – Mary Zophres
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Ruth E. Carter
Elvis – Catherine Martin
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Shirley Kurata
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris – Jenny Beavan
Tumblr media
Prediction: Elvis
The film is all about colors, nostalgia, and costumes of the Presley years.
Best Film Editing
Nominees:
The Banshees of Inisherin – Mikkel E. G. Nielsen
Elvis – Matt Villa and Jonathan Redmond
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Paul Rogers
Tár – Monika Willi
Top Gun: Maverick – Eddie Hamilton
Tumblr media
Prediction: Top Gun: Maverick
The editing of the sortie scenes and the final aerial battle is what makes the Top Gun sequel the ultimate winner of the editing award.
Best Visual Effects
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Frank Petzold, Viktor Müller, Markus Frank, and Kamil Jafar
Avatar: The Way of Water – Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett
The Batman – Dan Lemmon, Russell Earl, Anders Langlands, and Dominic Tuohy
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Geoffrey Baumann, Craig Hammack, R. Christopher White, and Dan Sudick
Top Gun: Maverick – Ryan Tudhope, Seth Hill, Bryan Litson, and Scott R. Fisher
Tumblr media
Prediction: Avatar: The Way of Water
Cameron's film can become the first sequel to win the same award in this category. The beautiful visuals of the world of Pandora would surely take the trophy home.

Do you have any Wait Until Dark headcanons and could you share any if you do?
*cracks knuckles* Sure do, sure will!
- Mike went to two years of college as a mathematics major before dropping out due to personal and financial reasons. Less than a year later, things got dire and it became Crime Time.
- Susy’s favorite colors used to be lilacs and rose pinks. She may not be able to see them now, but Sam helps her to buy clothes in those colors because simply knowing that they are around makes her feel a little better.
- Gloria can play poker. Really, really well. She once jokingly mentioned it to Sam, who didn’t quite realize that this child could flatten him in a betting game of Texas hold ‘em.  - Carlino knows absolutely nothing with the exception of weirdly in-depth facts about American birds. He can’t tell you what seven squared is, but he will tell you about the pinion feathers of chickadees. He is very proud of this very niche thing, but knows nothing about anything else. (Insert Wii theme music joke here)
- Roat has a cosmetics hoard for costuming reasons. By hoard, I do mean hoard; it looks like he raided a Sephora and took their entire stock. It’s kept in a bunch of plastic bags (one for foundations and concealers, one for lip & eye, one for glue-on hair and mustaches, etc). All of it is stolen, because he could.  - Susy can play the piano. She took lessons as a little girl, and has retained quite a bit of it (her memory is excellent). Claire de Lune is one of her favorites.

Wait Until Dark: A movie Review
Wait Until Dark: A Movie Review
“Wait Until Dark,” (directed by Terence Young) stars Audrey Hepburn in a thrilling and dramatic story with great suspense. The film masterfully uses lighting to build tension in certain scenes, which adds to the story, as the heroine (Susy, played by Hepburn) has been semi-recently blinded. The lighting forces the viewer to see things from Susy’s point of view, and to constantly guess what is happening in the story.
Tumblr media
The movie starts with a beautiful woman (Lisa) carrying a doll stuffed with heroin through the airport. She hands the doll to a random man after noticing she is being watched. She tells him she will get it back from him later. Soon after, we see the man (Harry Roat) who was watching her blackmail “professional” criminals- Mike Talman and Sergeant Carlino- into helping him retrieve the doll. Shortly, the men find Lisa, dead, hanging in the closet, and realize that they are in the house of Susy and Sam Hendrix, a married blind woman and ex marine. The men take advantage of Susy’s blindness, but she figures out that they are up to something. With the help of her young helper Gloria, (and some very suspenseful fight scenes) she must keep the men from finding/taking the doll and hurting her or her husband.
The focus of this film was lighting. As stated previously, Susy is blind, so in the last half of the movie, the lights are often completely off- the screen is dark. Because the audience can not see what is going on, there is much more suspence- who has the knife? Who just got stabbed? The lack of lighting also gives the audience some of Susy/Roat’s perspective- (they are the only ones who participate in the fight scenes)- but the audience also knows that Susy can use the dark to her advantage. In other parts of the movie, lighting is used less obviously- for instance, there is a scene where someone gets run over by a car. You first see a figure walking in the street, then out of nowhere, a car’s headlights flash and all of a sudden, the figure is being crushed up against a chain link fence. Because of the shadows, the audience first believes the figure to be Roat, the clearest antagonist. However, because the lighting was so shadowed, the audience was unaware that the figure was actually Carlino! Dramatic irony was also in play here, because Talman did not know of his comrades death either, and he was about to walk away from the whole mess. Lighting was also used to show the goodness of each of the characters- Susy and Talman were both shot in soft and comforting light, while Carlino was in slightly less flattering light, and Roat was shot to look sleazy and menacing. So, lighting created tension, suspense, and helped paint the characters in different lights, both literally and figuratively.
Other focuses of the film included Mise en Scene, Camera, and Editing. The Mise en Scene of the movie included much of the transactions between Lisa, Sam, and Roat at the beginning of the movie, because the audience could not hear what was being said, but could see Lisa handing Sam the doll, and Roat suspiciously watching. Camera angles played a large part near the end of the movie, where Roat and Susy were fighting. There were many exchanges of power in these scenes: Roat started off with the knife (shot from low camera angle) and Susy was defenseless. (high angle). Then, Susy took control, and walked to the top of the stairs to escape, while Roat stood on the floor. (Switching of angles). Then, the angles switched again when Roat opened the ice box, (ice box=light) and Susy was shown frantically trying to escape the apartment. The Editing of the film was hard to notice, and not a main feature of the film, as it was made in the 60’s where CGI had not yet been invented. Most of the movie seemed to be one continuous shot, so if there were transitions, they were very smooth.
Tumblr media
I enjoyed this film thoroughly. I was already an Audrey Hepburn fan, and this movie did nothing but heighten my love of her. I loved the dark scenes- the suspense, the drama! I wish that today’s films would use the element of suggestion about what might be happening instead of showing everything outright. All in all, this film might have moved into one of my favorite films of all time.

Your Friday Morning Roundup
It was a back-and-forth game for the Flyers, who led by a goal after two periods.
But Dave Hakstol decided to sit on a one-goal lead, and it bit back as the Devils scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the game en route to a 4-3 loss.
Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds scored the two first period goals for the Flyers, before Shayne Gostisbehere gave the Flyers the lead midway through the second.
Damon Severson and Nico Hischier helped give the Devils the lead in the final period.
Alex Lyon stopped 18 out of 22 shots in his first career NHL start.
The Flyers will return home to host the Ottawa Senators Saturday afternoon at 1 PM.
The Roundup:
Our live show from Carlino’s is available to listen.
Thursday’s injury report sees an uptick in an illness for the team:

Darby missed media availability and Mychal Kendricks also has an illness. And Rob Gronkowski was cleared to practice for the Patriots.
This new Birds pump up video is everything.
In more videos, a New England guy decided to spike a below average cheesesteak early in the morning to get views.
Sean continues his previews with the New England defense. Kevin dives in with some advanced stats and more.
The Birds appear to be relaxed as if it’s another game:
Torrey Smith, won Super Bowl XLVII with the Ravens vs. the 49ers: “We had a great practice yesterday, so that’s kind of our M.O. I think everyone is in the right place. I knew coming into this week it’s kind of crazy. Your schedule is off, your routine is off, but once Friday hits it kind of starts to feel like a normal game. For us, we have to go out and continue to have great practices.
“But overall, I think our team is in a great place. We’re still having fun and we’re still working our tails off.
“It’s just a game. I think experience is overrated. Someone asked me about Coach Pederson. I’m like, ‘We all graduate from college, and we can’t get a job because we don’t have enough experience.’ But the reality of it is when you get the opportunity to do it, you can go out there and perform just like anyone else. And so you learn on the job. Just as that was true for Coach Pederson, it’s true for this team. We’ve been playing games all year. Our team is experienced together, and the Super Bowl is no different. The only difference in this one is if you win there’s a huge celebration. That’s really the only difference. And there’s a long halftime and a little longer pregame.
“Otherwise, it’s football. We’re studying the same. We’re preparing the same. We expect the same results if we play our best.”

Former #1 overall pick and Phillies minor league pitcher Mark Appel is leaving baseball:
And now, Appel is leaving the game behind, he tells Bleacher Report, taking an “indefinite break” from professional baseball. Should he never return to baseball, he would become just the third No. 1 overall pick to never make the major leagues, along with Brien Taylor of the New York Yankees (1991) and Steve Chilcott of the New York Mets (1966).
“Maybe we should all get together and have a party,” Appel says with a laugh in his Houston home. “I don’t know what the future holds. I’m pursuing other things, but also trying to become a healthy human.”
Appel is currently rehabbing shoulder inflammation that hampered his 2017 season, but he has battled injuries his whole pro career. He pitched through soreness during his first season amid expectations that came with being a No. 1 overall pick, which only further exacerbated the pain. In 2016, he underwent season-ending surgery to remove a bone spur, and this season, as he sat alone in his Florida hotel room rehabbing his latest injury, Appel began to ponder life beyond the game.
“I’m 26, I have a Stanford degree, I have many interests beyond baseball, which I still love, but I have a lot of things I care about,” Appel says. “I enjoy challenging my mind. My last four years in baseball have challenged my mind.”
In college hoops, Temple upset 16th ranked Wichita State 81-79 in overtime.
Top-ranked Villanova made 19 threes in a 98-78 win over Creighton.

A weird Wait Until Dark related question I would love to hear your thoughts on: One line I always found interesting was when Susy is talking with Mike in their last scene together and she says, "It's different with Mr Roat, isn't it? It's that he wants to do evil things." I always wondered what about her brief interactions with Roat made her intuit he was the worst of the three? Because she only really knows she's interacted with him as Sr and Jr, one of which is a crazy codger and the other is a mild-mannered irritant. Was she that freaked out by "Sr" ransacking her room or did she get the sense that he enjoyed psychologically tormenting her about her husband's alleged infidelity more than the other two?
Hmmmm, that's an interesting question!
I feel like it's probably a combination of the two, but leaning towards the latter...I think she might have thought about the fact that he's putting on more of a charade than the other two...pushing Sam's "infidelity" narrative, playing two characters, etc. I mean, Mike and Carlino were basically playing themselves, which did make me wonder last night why they didn't use pseudonyms, since they were planning on just walking away if everything had gone as planned, and they do have records.
Add to the fact that he barged into the house and "trashed" her room (still weird that he didn't actually do that when they said he did), she probably got the sense that there was something wrong with him, compared to the other two...but little did she know how evil he was.

so those wait until dark villains, huh…any thoughts on them + any quirks with how your production is portraying them that you’d like to share?
yes oh my god the wait until dark villains are so good
genuinely tysm for this ask anon please send more questions if you're interested im so normal about this play and i love talking abt it online
i especially have thoughts on mike because the version of the play has us not revealing mike to the audience as a villain until the very end when he fucking dies so you honestly grow to trust him a lot, like he's the most dependable character in the show
it's never explained but to me he has a very tragic story because he was forced into this elaborate scheme by carlino and roat and he genuinely seems to get on really well with suzy for a while, he's actually murdered by roat right as he's confessing and apologizing to her
and it really pains me that we never get to see what's going on in his mind because we don't know if he really is on suzy's side or not
we're also trying to make carlino more of a teddy bear vibe because it'll be a really nice contrast to how slick and snakelike roat is
also our understudy for carlino is a girl so for at least one performance we're gonna have carlina instead of carlino and she's going to play the character really differently, we're talking about her being a bit of a femme fatale and having her contrast suzy in that way, carlina will also be played as everything that sam expects suzy to be and that'll kinda give suzy more frustration and distrust to sam because of her insecurity caused by carlina
yeah !! that's basically it sorry if this made no sense or if it didnt answer your question lol im always just happy to ramble about this play

Harry Roat, Jr for the ask game! :)
1, 18, 21, 22, 24
Ah, that delightful bastard.
My first impression of them.
Tbh, when he first opened his mouth and came in with his dumbass haircut and Doc Ock sunglasses, I was like "oh my God, that's the villain? I'll never be able to take this 'scary movie' seriously." But as the first apartment scene goes on, you realize he's a bit off and this off-ness becomes really creepy, culminating in him pulling the knife on the other guys-- and then the guy is terrifying.
18. How do you think they were as a kid?
Probably very quiet and to himself. Considering he's a psychopath, he probably tortured animals and pulled the wings off flies when bored. My own personal headcanon is that he was probably raised on the street and in a bad environment anyway, making those traits even worse.
21. When do you think they were at their happiest?
It would be easy to say when killing or torturing people, but I'd make it as broad as when his plans fall in line. I imagine he got a lot of satisfaction from conning people in general, controlling them psychologically. Like, even when Mike and Carlino corner him in the chair during their near-battle, he smiles as he drops the knife, because he knows he's about to get them under his thumb once they see what's in the closet.
22. When do you think they were at their lowest?
Probably getting killed by a blind, traumatized housewife after a lifetime of criminal activity.
24. What is a secret you think they've never told anyone?
His real name.
Thanks!!

Wait Until Dark Review
Tumblr media
In my opinion, “Wait Until Dark” was a good suspense film. I was very impressed with the unique setting of the movie, climax, and mysterious things that happened during the film.
The opening scene was Lisa packing her stuff to go to the airport. I noticed after that the setting mainly took place in Susy’s home. Obviously they could’ve film many places but they decided not to. Susy’s home was the key to upcoming events and what made the movie better because that’s where most of the events occured. For example, when Mike introduces himself to Susy to find out where the doll was. Susy’s house was introduced when three men Roat, Carlino, and Mike were all in the house wanting the doll. From there, you can see that the movie mainly surrounded Susy’s home. Another way that I really liked the setting was that Susy never left her house. I was in shock that Susy knew her house that well and knew where her things were. For example, she walked like she wasn’t even blind walking to her kitchen and going to her room. The only way that Mike, Carlino, and Roat knew she was blind was when Susy (I think) said, “Who’s there?”, and she was staring at the direction where Roat was and she didn’t have a reaction. Susy was just so comfortable because she knew her house and she took advantage of it. For example, she hid the doll where no one would expect it to be.
For the climax, I thought it was fantastic. The climax thrilled when it was dark. Susy goes out to the hallway to break the light bulbs, and breaks every light she knows in her house. Carlino kills Mike with Susy not knowing, and this is where the climax begun. Carlino spreading out gasoline on the floor while threatening Susy to give up the doll. Somehow Susy got the gasoline and lighter and now she was the one threatening Carlino that she was gonna light him on fire. Susy was very smart because she used the cane to know where Carlino was. There was so much suspense in this scene because when Susy had to turn on the lighter, the camera shifted to Carlino. As the viewer, you didn’t know if Carlino was going to do something or if Susy was going to. Carlino eventually reached the fridge to use it as light, and now he has the advantage to see where Susy was and she gave up the doll. Susy while walking backwards, her hand grabbed onto a knife. When Carlino was walking Susy to her room, Susy stabs him out of nowhere. She tries to escape but the door was all locked up and there was a sudden jump scare of Carlin’s jumping and grabbing Susy’s ankle. The most intense part about this encounter was when Susy had nowhere to go but hide behind the fridge door. Carlino comes forward with a knife, and then you hear Susy scream and you see a black screen. I really liked that whole encounter and it kind of relates to the title of the movie. It was very enjoyable to watch because you didn’t know what was going to happen, and you don’t know if Susy was still alive after the black screen, which kept me guessing and intrigued.
Now for the mystery aspect, it was quite interesting to me. I wasn’t really sure about Sam. We only saw Sam with Susy when he had to leave for work and that was about it, which he later appears at the end. I also thought his screen time played a role that I thought there was something fishy about him. Also, the doll was mysterious. The film does a great job introducing the doll by having a close up shot of the doll, and Lisa giving it to Sam because there was people watching her. As the viewer, you are wondering what was the significance of the doll. We later see in the film, Carlino cuts the doll open it was drugs. I wish the doll was cut open at the end of the film by Susy.
Overall, “Wait Until Dark” was a good suspense film because of the unique setting, the climax, and the mysterious things.
