MtG: Halloweenmander #3
Spooky scary skeletons season! It’s horror time! It’s creepy movies and dark mystique and what we need now is to sit down and play a bunch of Magic: The Gathering, a game that has been periodically terrorised by fairies and goblins.
Let’s look at some horror-themed commander decks!
Five years ago (good GOD) I wrote two articles about different horror commanders you could use to make the heart of a spooky horrifying Commander deck that could be used for a halloween card game night. And that was 2018, so many years ago, and that means surely there are some more commanders printed since then, to revisit the idea.
How many commanders have been printed since then?
Oh.
In case you don’t read these numbers well, when the last article was published, there were 786 potential commanders printed. Since then, 1,170 more have been printed, and isn’t that a number.
Anyway, point is, I’m sure I can belt out five more commanders to make for a spooky horror deck, based on something about this card makes it a good spooky horror card!
I’m going to present here, then, a set of four different commanders, one for each different partially-black colour pairs, that, hopefully, pull in different enough directions that they don’t all feel like they’re all the same deck playing with the same ideas.
BW: Burakos, Party Leader // Folk Hero Zombies
WUBRG order predicts we have to start here with a white base creature. The combination of Burakos and Folk Hero is pretty obvious – as long as you have both out, any time you cast a creature that shares a creature type with Burakos, you get to draw a card, as long as you’re only playing one a turn. Burakos is a Cleric, Wizard, Warrior and a Rogue and an Orc, which means any time you cast those, Burakos can get you a card, which is a steady ongoing source of cards.
Thing is, if you just look at black and white’s top edhrec cards, you’re going to see some bangers. You can build for lock pieces, with things like Grand Abolisher and Mother of Runes, or you can build for aggressive Aristocrats effects with Zulaport Cutthroat and friends. But know what else you can build for?
There are a lot of zombies that are clerics, wizards and warriors. Death Baron is a Wizard. So’s Undead Augur. Archghoul of Thraben is. Mikaeus, The Unhallowed is a cleric. Shepherd of Rot, Rotlung Reanimator, Corpse Harvester, Boneknitter, they’re all Clerics and Wizards. You can get some bodies out there, and then there are cards Death_Priest of Myrkul, Ratadrabik – some stuff that’s midsized, and that means you benefit from dumping cards out there. You can build a hell of a party with a lot of dead meat, you’ll draw lots of cards, and Burakos even makes it possible to score treasures if you can make him hard to block.
It’s black, it’s white, it’s a swarm with control and ways to reload!
UB: Umbris, Fear Manifest
Making a blue black deck out of just the coolest things you can find isn’t hard, and there’s already a lot of cards you can cast that exile things off your opponent’s deck. This is a feeling of horror, of macabre dreadfulness, but also, the trick is, you want to make Umbris big enough to start one-shotting opponents, and then you want to protect them. That means you’re not trying to exile whole libraries, you just want to be able to exile chunks. This means that instead of focusing on beating up people’s graveyards en masse, you can treat other people’s graveyards like they’re a resource, which adds Uchuulon to your options.
The thing is, Umbris cares about entering the battlefield, which means if you can protect Umbris with flicker effects, you’re going to get something out of them! Things that bring Umbris back from the dead? Also handy!
The best thing about this kind of deck is if you make basically a blue-black flicker deck, around horrors, you have this sort of jump-scare effect and you have a lot of cards that are really good at pushing your game forward, that are good at protecting you, but don’t leave the other players at the casual table panicked that you’re going to counter their creatures.
Don’t get me wrong, when you start chomping chunks off the top of people’s libraries, they are going to want you dead, but at least you have a sort of blue-black voltron deck whose backup plan is melting minds.
BR: Kardur, Doomscourge
Man, I want an alter of Kardur that just looks like he was airbrushed on a van.
Where Burakos’ folk story is trying to make a swarm deck that cares about hitting the board and Umbris wants to turtle up, a Kardur deck? You want to make a bunch of goad cards the backbone here. Kardur wants creatures attacking and blocking. Kardur wants people on the board crashing into each other, and Kardur’s creatures want to be part of that. It’s okay for you to kill off your stuff with Kardur, and you don’t even mind if they come back symmetrically.
Here’s my thinking: Black red Berserkers, built around tribal effects, including Patriarch’s Bidding. You don’t mind if your bidding gets a bunch of other people’s stuff back: You want that stuff back, you want it on the floor so you can get them to crash into one another again!
BG: Old Stickfingers
Okay, that’s three decks that aren’t just ‘more stuff Talen already was going to play,’ right?
Well, here’s Old Stickfingers.
Old Stickfingers is a card that, for, say, four mana, loads two creatures into your yard, and just creatures. Since Stickfingers leaves spells alone, it’s not a source of flashback or jumpstart spells, it’s just a way to get just creatures into your bin. That’s okay though, because there are some creatures that can do stuff from inside your graveyard.
Any given creature from your bin, if it has more than 1 power, is better on the board than supporting Old Stickfingers. Stickfingers is a kind of hydra as a commander, and it can ‘draw’ you like, X cards while it’s doing it, especially if you build with cards like Skyclave Shade, Ghastly Remains, Genesis, Loathsome Troll, Gigapede, Brawn – that kinda stuff can be part of an engine. Genesis is obviously the best one!
This can be hard to deal with in terms of gumming up the ground though. Like, cheap cards like Bloodsoaked Champion and Dread Wanderer, they can jump from your graveyard to the battlefield, but they don’t gum up the ground well. I like Hormagaunt Horde in this space a lot, too!
Wrapup
Hm.
Anything else?
No, I guess not. Mask up and stay safe at your Magic: The Gathering halloween parties!
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

Loyal Cathar + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed
AKA: The undying-est damn creature you’ve ever seen.

Note
Let's say I have Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Solemnity on the battlefield under my control. Then I cast my commander, Ghave, Guru of Spores. What happens?
Solemnity won’t allow Ghave to enter the battlefield with any +1/+1 counters on it, so it’ll just enter as a base 0/0 creature that’s getting +1/+1 and undying from Mikaeus. Nothing else special happens here.
Tumblr media
But that’s not very interesting, so let’s say that there’s also a Night of Souls’ Betrayal on the battlefield, giving every creature -1/-1 and causing Ghave to be 0/0 again. In this case, Ghave will immediately die and Undying with trigger. When the undying trigger resolves, Ghave will return to the battlefield without counters and die again. This loop will repeat endlessly. If no one chooses to (or is able to) break the loop and the game doesn’t otherwise end due to somehting like Zulaport Cutthroat triggers or the like, then this is an endless loop which will end the game in a draw.

I was in the middle of writing a Second-in-Command article, explaining how Walking Ballista had usurped Triskelion in a Mikaeus, the Unhallowed EDH deck as “Second-in-Command”, when I realized the combo doesn’t actually go infinite. Can you figure out why not?

Is there lore behind 'Grimgrin, Corpse-Born' from the Innistrad set?
Yeah! Grimgrin was created by Geralf and named in honor of Gisa's face. You can read a little bit of fiction about him here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/preview-article-mikaeus-unhallowed-2012-01-16

planebound accomplice + prof onyx + smog isn't worth it outside of commander, it's just 100% worse than Sneak Attack for Griselbrand or Emrakul. six mana vs five, and needs an extra card. smog spiking still makes sense but onyx is only gonna see commander play imo. 6 mana's fucking expensive for any format where aggro is possible
yeah that's why i said it was "theoretically" possible, i saw someone mention it in passing but i don't think it's replacing griselbrand any time soon. i just think people are excited that black commanders have another 2-card instant win combo (the other being Mikaeus the Unhallowed and Triskelion), with one of the cards even being playable on its own

Legendary Commentary: Dark Ascension
Dark Ascension led to a lot of strange and interesting tech including Drogskol Reaver and Havengul Lich. Today we have just two entries into your options for commander.
Tumblr media
Do you like combo? Or do you like the flavor of an undying horde in an ever darkening night? We have both here in Mikaeus Unhallowed after death. Freshly rez’d he’s ready to make sure things stay out of the grave and in your opponent’s face. Undying is an interesting mechanic because removing the counter with cards like Power Conduit it lets it trigger again. If you can grant Persist through Cauldron of Souls you get an insane loop. Run with death tech and swing recklessly or sac profusely.
Tumblr media
Its stax 😎👉👉 were you expecting something different? Stax n Tax.
That’s all for Dark Ascension. Next up we have a set so awkward it was used as a case to restructure the entire block format of mtg. Safe planeswalking out there.

EDH Report
I played some 1-on-1 with my brother today, here’s a breakdown.
Game 1:
I managed to ramp into Mikaeus turn 5, but turn 6 he dropped Dragonlord Silumgar and stole Mikaeus to hit me for 5. On my Turn 6 I removed Silumgar with Scour From Existence, getting Mikaeus back and equipping Chariot of Victory to my Nantuko Husk, sacrificing Phyrexian Totem for Husk’s ability and hitting in for 9. Turn 7 he used Vessel of Paramnesia to throw my Swiftfoot Boots into the graveyard, but I managed to gain some evasion by casting Fallen Angel. I eventually won by getting out Grinding Station and Tatterkite, then using the undying from Mikaeus I milled him out.
Game 2:
Was fairly uneventful. He stole Mikaeus again, but this time I removed Silumgar with Victim of Night. I managed to get Fallen Ideal on Mikaeus, so I ended up winning through flying commander damage.
I had a lot of fun!

Judging a card
Decided to share a bit of insight on my thought process when considering a new card for a Commander deck. In this case we will be looking at a possible 2-drop mana dork replacement for my Sidisi, Brood Tyrant deck.
Tumblr media
Checking the boxes for mana ramp in Sidisi’s deck;
- Is the mana ramp a creature? First things first, Sidisi cares about creatures, not only do we want creatures so that we can create tokens off of Sidisi, but they also fuel other aspects of the deck, such as numbers for a craterhoof win. The fragile nature of mana producing creatures versus the land based ramp that green is normally favored for is lessened by the fact that the deck typically only needs to be able to produce 5 mana to do what the deck aims to do, cast a living death.
Tumblr media
-Is the mana dork castable on turns one or two? Stage 1 of this decks game plan is to cast our commander, Sidis, on turn 3, since Sidisi acts as the grease that gets the decks gears rolling.
Tumblr media
-can the mana-dork produce a color of mana that wasn’t required to cast it? Blightsoil Druid for example cost black mana to cast and produces green mana. Which not only ramps us into our desired T3 Sidisi, but fixes our mana if we keep a hand that can’t produce green.
Tumblr media
-Is the mana-dork non-human? This may seem like an odd requirement, but since we do run mikaeus the unhallowed, it’s not an irrational request. Since we are a self-mill mass-reanimation deck we see a lot of our deck every game, Mikaeus shows up more often than not.
Tumblr media
Those are the major hurdles a mana dork must jump through before it can even be considered for the deck. Outside of that we do try and squeeze any extra value from our mana-dorks that we can, such as from deathrite shaman, but cards such as that are not overly common. We also prefer that our mana-dorks can attack, to feed into the previously mentioned craterhoof win, I also like to send mana dorks at unguarded planeswalkers. I do make an exception for sylvan caryatid, hexproof and producing any color is nice.
Now that we have our requirements out in the open, let’s talk about Incubation Druid.
Is it a creature? Sure is
Does it come down on turns 1 or 2? Yep
Can it produce colors outside it’s casting cost? Yes, but with restrictions.
Is it a non-human? An elf Druid works, BUT it’s adapt ability doesn’t place nice with undying, that being said undying can allow it to access to it’s gilded lotus style ability without adapting.
Extra utility? It can become a gilded lotus of sorts and boost its own stats.
So does Incubation Druid make the cut? Well the answer is a hard maybe. Unfortunately the Druid isn’t a good color fixer, since it only produces colors that I can already produce. Meaning that if it’s turn 3 and I can only make green and black, with this being my only mana dork I can’t make blue to cast Sidisi. We do try and keep that sort of mana production to a minimum, since we already run a handful of mana-dorks that have limited/restricted color producing ability, such as voyaging satyr.
So having restricted color producing ability is definitely a negative, as well it’s adapt ability which doesn’t play nice with mikaeus, though that’s more of a grey area since undying can also turn on its gilded lotus ability as mentioned above.
If I were to make a cut for Incubation Druid it would most likely be Utopia tree or manaweft sliver, which are arguably our worst 2-drop mana dorks. The sliver being able to be stolen by a silver overlord and the tree not having any base power, though that’s shared by Incubation Druid. Both the sliver and tree can produce any color of mana, as well as meet all the above requirements, so it’s still not a sure thing if Incubation Druid finds a home in Sidisi’s deck.
