The case of the Mignonette
"Attention it is about cannibalism"
In 1844, an Australian lawyer John Henry Want, eager to impress his fellow sailors back home, bought an aging but primarily British yacht named Mignonette in England. There he found a crew to sail the ship from Southampton to Sydney, inadvertently securing the fate of four men: Thomas Dudley, Edwin Stephens, Edmund Brooks and Richard Parker.
Tumblr media
Sketch of English Yacht Mignonette by Tom Dudley (1853-1900)
As the Mignonette sailed towards the Cape of Good Hope, a fierce storm blew up. The yacht, built of rotten wood, sank within minutes. In their haste, the four sailors took refuge in a four-metre long dinghy with two cans of turnips but no water. The dinghy drifted westwards, towards South America, some 3,000 kilometres away. But without water, the continent offered little salvation. Days turned into weeks, and the men grew weaker and weaker. In such desperate situations, sailors invoke the seafaring custom of casting lots to decide who will be sacrificed for food so that their comrades can survive. But rather than leave it to chance, Captain Dudley and his first mate Stephens decided that Parker, a 17-year-old orphan and Cabin Boy who had become delirious after drinking seawater, was the obvious choice. Dudley stabbed Parker to death, and the three remaining men feasted on the young man's flesh. Only four days later, the German Bark Montezuma rescued the survivors. Back in England, Dudley and Stephens were convicted of murder, although they were not the first sailors to resort to cannibalism. What set them apart, however, was that they departed from the customs of the sea by deciding for themselves which man should be killed and eaten - a presumptuous decision that Victorian England considered too encroaching and against all ethics and morals. But the survivors' story of desperation and the fact that Parker would probably have died anyway eventually aroused public sympathy, and Dudley and Stephens were spared the death penalty. They only had to serve six months in prison for killing the teenager.
Tumblr media
What happened to Dudley and Stephens was enshrined in an infamous precedent in England that the taking of a life can never be justified - even if it is to save one's own life - and since then, compulsory cannibalism at sea has also been punishable - because it need not always be the case that the victim had already died before being eaten. A fact that had always been disregarded in other cases at the time and the people involved had therefore always been acquitted.

Oooh the prequel would be exciting! I miss those Gen One Grimalldis ❤️ But I do hope you eventually are able to finish the current timeline stories. I would love to see Willanor get married and how Chris settles into his future. And of course the final send off for the legendary Helena Migonette Grimalldi! Her OUAD post was so beautiful.
I swear we will see Eleanor Grimalldi marry William Geraldi if its the very last thing I do!! 😂
And I promise we will know Chris' future too!

Well I know why Genovia has to be fictional, because the people in charge there are too good for this world…. Like first Clarisse is the queen and then Mia but also the prime minister! In the first movie when Mia eats too much of the sorbet, him and his wife their reaction is “we have to do that too so it doesn’t look weird!” Like ZERO hesitation between Mia eating too much sorbet and the three of them hopping up and down with brain freeze. Like who will ride or die as hard as the prime minister and his wife!
Well Joe.
BUT WHO ELSE I ASK YOU.

1. a book that is close to your heart
The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth, which I think I've blogged about before. It's about a young lesbian growing up in an extremely oppressive religious environment and struggling with guilt over her parents' deaths, and in the second half of the book her guardian sends her to conversion therapy. There is a movie, which I haven't seen and don't plan on watching, because by all accounts the movie mostly focuses on the conversion therapy half of the book and that's not why I connected so strongly with it. So much of the first half of Cameron's story reminds me of myself; I didn't start figuring out my sexuality until nearing the end of high school/beginning of college, but even as a kid I could tell something about me was different (besides being biracial Chinese in a largely white community and also being undiagnosed autistic, lmao). Cameron's experiences resonate more strongly with me than almost any other fictional character, even if I didn't literally have most of them. (I should caution, this book is quite old by queer YA standards and thus may not be as resonant to readers who are used to a different bookish climate: it contains the T-slur once and some questionable depiction of a two-spirit character, along with pervasive and at times violent homophobia and secondhand descriptions of self-harm. If someone would like more info I'd be happy to elaborate via private ask.)
39. a book featuring your favourite character
You know...I'm gong to have to go with Amelia "Mia" Migonette Thermopolis Grimaldi Renaldo from the Princess Diaries series on this! And I guess the one I would choose to highlight is Princess in Love, my favorite, because I think it's the one with some of the best plot shenanigans and also I'm a sucker for the incredibly cute ending. I started reading these books when I was 13, right after I saw the movie (I didn't see it until it had been out for several years), and I've read every single one at least three times and the older ones probably more like five or six times at this point. These characters genuinely feel like old friends to me. Mia is such a fun character and her growth is so great to watch as the series progresses. I like the movie version as well but she really doesn't hold a candle to book Mia.
43. a book that you have read more than three times
Actually both of the above books qualify, lmao. But in the interest of bringing it up again, Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, which is my Cool Literary Answer to "what is your favorite book." I've read this four times now and every time is just as good if not better than the last. I notice something new every time I read it. (I also feel this way about her first book, Everything I Never Told You.)
133. a book that you came across randomly and fell in love with
I'm not........a huge fan.....of Maggie Stiefvat3r in general but when I was in high school I read The Scorpio Races, which is a horse girl book with graphic man-eating horse violence, and I've read it like five more times by now lol. I think the horse girl market is wildly untapped once you get out of like, middle grade, and this book has bonus fantasy horses that can EAT YOU and a dangerous horse race and a plucky heroine trying to save her family's farm and a boy who has a bond with a man-eating horse and they don't even kiss till like the last page so you can ignore that part if you want to and most of it is about how much they love their respective horses tbh and I just really love it a lot!

MIAMI ART WEEk 2018
(photo of Scouted Artist, Johanna Boccardo  by Matt Rice Photography)
It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  Miami Art Week 2018 is almost here. From December 4th through December 9th, Miami will be taken over by art collectors, gallerists, artists and celebs for the 17th installation of Art Basel Miami Beach.  With the addition of 15+ satellite fairs and art related events, it is an overwhelming territory to cover in just 6 short days.  As such, we’ve put together a quick guide to help you tackle the week.
If you have one day or if it’s your first time, you must see Art Basel  at the newly renovated Miami Beach Convention Center.  This year’s event is set to take place December 6th-9th.  Grab a glass of champagne and peruse 267 of the world's leading modern and contemporary art galleries displaying premier paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, prints, photography, film, video, and digital art by over 4,000 artists.   This show is like going to one of the world’s finest art museums.  The most recognizable artists, such as Twombley, Calder, Basquiat, and Bourgeois, are usually at the front of the show while the newer “up and coming” artists are towards the back.  The added twist that everything is for sale lends a real air of excitement to the room.  In 2017 Art Basel offered over $3.5 billion in art for sale.  In addition, there is great people watching between the celeb sightings and general audience attire.  Spotted last year were Drake, 50 Cent, Jaime King, Cindy Crawford and Val Kilmer to name a few.  The hot ticket is the Preview party on Wednesday night, but best of luck getting in to this invitation-only event.  The fair opens to the public Thursday, December 6th at 3 PM.  Tickets are $50 online, $60 onsite.
If you have an extra day or are feeling like getting an ambitious start to Miami Art Week, ART MIAMI and CONTEXT  open to the public on Wednesday, December 5th at 11AM.  Located on the mainland at One Herald Plaza between the Venetian and MacArthur Causeways, Art Miami showcases significant works of art from 20th and 21st century artists.  Here you can see a few of the high end pieces that you may find at Art Basel - works by Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein or Helen Frankenthaler to name a few - but will also see more works of young, emerging artists and galleries.  Sister fair, CONTEXT, highlights newer and cutting edge artists.  Together, these fairs are very manageable and parking is easier than on the beach.  Much of the art is priced a little lower, starting in the $25,000 range.  Plan to spend about 4-5 hours between the two tents.  One day passes are $55.

Feel like adding a third or fourth day to your Art Week?  There is definitely more to be seen.  Head back to the beach to take in ART PULSE,  UNTITLED , SCOPE MIAMI BEACH , and SUPERFINE   .  ART PULSE opens to the public on December 6th at its beachfront location at 4601 Collins Avenue.  I’ve ‘discovered’ some of my favorite artists here including Jordi Alcaraz and Eva Sussman.  You can pick up a piece of art here starting around $7,000.  Tickets are $25.  UNTITLED, located between Ocean Drive and 12th Street, opens December 5th.  Tickets are $35.  In addition to contemporary art, visitors to Untitled can see an ongoing performance of #NeverNotWorking which invites everyone to assess their privilege by highlighting the plight of domestic and service workers in the United States. .  Then a little further South, Scope Miami Beach enters its 18th year and celebrates international emerging contemporary art and multi-disciplinary creative programming.  This fair is located at 801 Ocean Drive and opens to the public on December 5th at 11AM.  Tickets are $40.  Just next door at the Art Deco Welcome Center is SUPERFINE!  Open December 5th-9th, SUPERFINE! features artwork that is affordable and representative of the local art scene.  Tickets are $8-$10 depending on day.
Looking for the Next Big Thing?  Then you must check out NADA .  The 16th edition of this fair will feature over 124 galleries and will take place from December 6th-9th at the Ice Palace Studios.  NADA was founded in 2002 and is is dedicated to showcasing new art and to celebrating the rising talents from around the globe.  Tickets are $20.
DESIGN MIAMI  opens December 5th.  This fair features museum quality exhibitions pertaining to interior design.  Don’t miss this year’s commissioned piece by contemporary artist Pedro Reyes and fashion designer Carla Fernández which will feature curved steel walls and a map that shows the names of the more than 300 original settlements on pre-Columbian Americas.  Design Miami is located next to Art Basel at Meridian Avenue and 19th Street.  Admission is $27 online, $32 onsite.
I love works on paper and if you do too, don’t miss INK MIAMI .  This fair is unique among Miami’s fairs for its focus on modern and contemporary works on paper by internationally renowned artists.  The Old Print Shop, Tandem Press and Durham Press are a few favorites.  INK Miami is located at the Suites of Dorchester, two blocks north of 17th, and opens on December 5th at 9AM.  Admission is FREE.  While you are there, travel 3 blocks south and check out AQUA ART MIAMI  Featuring 52 galleries from around the world, this fair opens December 6th at 12PM and is located at 1530 Collins Avenue.  Admission is $25.
Spectrum Miami  and RED DOT  will return to Wynwood this year with shows focusing on certain themes.  Spectrum features an international slate of artists and galleries as well as five days filled with Art Labs, Art Talks, Meet the Artist sessions, music, and entertainment.  This year’s curatorial theme is Allure which will be demonstrated through atmospheric abstracts, provocative photographs and seductive sculptures.  Sister fair, Red Dot, showcases over 75 galleries who will be curating around this year’s theme, Illuminate.  These fairs, located at Mana Wynwood, run December 6th-9th.  Admission is $25.

All of these fairs have opening night previews.  If you have a friend in the know, try to score an invite as these times can be far less crowded. Otherwise, here is a suggested schedule for the general public days:
Wednesday, December 5
ART MIAMI + ART CONTEXT at 1PM.  Check out works by TSG Miami featured artist, Carola Bravo at Bernice Steinbaum Gallery’s booth at Art Miami.  End the day with a glass of sparkling rose and lobster deviled eggs at Migonette.
Thursday, December 6
SPECTRUM + RED DOT at 1PM.  Refuel with a Taco Alambre at Coyo Taco and a coffee from neighboring Panther Coffee and head south to NADA around 5:00PM.  Finish the day with drinks and gorgeous views at Cipriani’s when the fair closes around 7PM.
Friday, December 7
DESIGN MIAMI at 11AM followed by ART BASEL at 3PM.  Grab lunch at the Garden Cafe by Michelle Bernstein, located at the adjacent Miami Botanical Garden, and pop into INK MIAMI in between.
Saturday, December 8
ART PULSE at 10AM + UNTITLED at 2PM + SCOPE MIAMI + SUPERFINE!.  Slip out the back of Art Pulse and take the boardwalk to La Côte at the Fountainbleau for lunch with a beach view.  Head south to Ocean Drive for the remaining 3 fairs.  You can catch up with TSG Miami featured artist, Jamie Jones, at Superfine! (Booth B04.)  Then, finish the day with the late night Happy Hour at The Upland.  We recommend an Upland Old Fashioned and Crispy Duck Wings to nibble on!
Sunday, December 9
Revisit your favorite fair from the week and make a last minute deal on a piece before the gallery packs it up!  There are also many other events hosted by individual galleries and museums.  TSG Miami featured artist, Liv Dockerty will have a pop gallery in Coral Gables at 279 Giralda Avenue while Johanna Boccardo will be part of a group show titled “Mis-placed” at Collective 62.

Carolina Hurricanes All-Star Chefs Series
Tumblr media
Acclaimed North Carolina chefs teaming up together to serve a multi-course meal is something typically associated with highbrow dinners. But this years version of the Carolina Hurricanes has been having fun at the expense of more traditional sensibilities, queue angry NHL analysts getting upset at the post-win celebrations. So with this era of fun in the PNC Arena, the All-Star Chefs Series brings the all the elegance of a chefs’ dinner to the hockey rink.
Tumblr media
On the surface, gourmet food and hockey have no correlation but in this town, I’d argue it makes perfect sense. In what seems to be a quest for the Hurricanes to reconnect with everything that make them Carolinian other than their location, to the Petey Pablo goal song to taking the fellas out to the NC State Fair, giving a platform for this foodie crazed town to enjoy the state’s best chefs is just the next step.
Tumblr media
Coming from the Queen City, Chef Chris Coleman leads the kitchen at Stoke. Chef Chris served a whimsical collection of farm-to-table dishes with a Southern twist. No other dishes were as fun as the Farmer Dan’s lettuce cups.
Tumblr media
The build-your-own lettuce cup station offered grilled maiatake mushrooms, soy and ginger slaw, and the crown jewel of the dish - Pepsi boiled peanuts. Each flavor and texture built off each other - earthly mushrooms and sweet peanuts, fresh lettuce and crunchy slaw.
Tumblr media
Another vegetarian dish that impressed was salt-roasted turnips with turnip green-Calvander cheese mouse.
Tumblr media
Deceptively tasty morsels, packed a lot of flavor in one bite.
Tumblr media
Turning a fried Italian treat into handheld shrimps and grits, Chef Chris’s served a shrimp, spicy young mustard, rice grits arancini.
Tumblr media
While not the most photographic dish, the Shepherd's Pie Stuff Potatoes’s braised lamb and crispy cheese teamed together to make for a hearty bite.
Tumblr media
Coming from the coast, Chef Dean Neff from Wilmington’s Pinpoint Restaurant brought all the fresh seafood you’d imagine a coastal chef to serve. But to prime our palates, Chef Dean served a pleasant shot of peanut soup.
Tumblr media
Chef Dean’s fresh cobia with garlic-ginger dressing showcased Dean’s willingness to get out of the way of the seafood.
Tumblr media
The dressing and grapefruit provided just the right amount of acid for the meaty fish.
Tumblr media
Two types of oysters occupied Chef Dean’s table. One was broiled with shrimp and chilies piled on top.
Tumblr media
The other was raw served with a Haw River Brewing Rusty Plow migonette, which ended up being my favorite bite of the night. Chef Dean also had a ghost pepper hot sauce to dab on top of the raw Masonboro oyster which engulfed my palate with spice.
Tumblr media
Not all of Chef Dean’s dishes came from the sea. For the plant eaters, he offered a beautiful butterbean hummus.
Tumblr media
For the carnivores he served a ghost pepper spiced short rib. Though the description sounded a little intimidating, Chef Dean was able to balance the heat with star anise and sourgum glaze.
Tumblr media
As this dinner was sponsored by the seemingly restless G Patel’s Social House Vodka, a signature cocktail was crafted by featured bartender Matt Schwab. My tolerance for black licorice made me wary of the night’s signature cocktail that featured star anise but I decided to take a chance and use my one drink coupon on the featured cocktail. The results was a sublime mixture of sweetness, vodka and just the right amount of licorice.
Tumblr media
Beyond just the food, the event itself was just plain fun. The chefs were approachable and accessible. Chef Chris even gave us the leftover Pepsi boiled peanuts after we raved about them. The food was plentiful, as we made multiple and frequent trips to the food. Even the Hurricanes’ GM and President Don Waddell made his way through the crowd, where I almost convinced him to try the signature cocktail.... he’d need it after the team blew a two goal lead and loss in a shoot-out that night.
Tumblr media
With happy bellies we took to our lower level seats (included with the dinner package) to enjoy the rest of the night. It was nice to be able to sit down and enjoy the game without having to balance handfuls of food as you descend down the stairs or go on constant food runs. And despite a frustrating ending to the game, the action was still entertaining to watch. And fun is something that this All-Star Chef’s Dinner and this season of Carolina Hurricane hockey is definitely providing.
