Darkwing Beyond*

*(Just some corrections)*

It's a Darkwing Duck fancomic by Snark (AKA darkwingsnark) and Mica (AKA micaxiii).

Years after the presumed death of Drake Mallard (better known as Darkwing Duck), the now 17 year old Gosalyn Mallard has decided to take up her late father's mantle in protecting the city of Saint Canard as the new Darkwing Duck. It won't be easy as she'll have to balance out her regular teenage years while being a vigilante.

Basically this is just a 'what if' AU on what could have happened at the end of the Darkwing Duck cartoon show. It's yet to go any farther after the prologue as it's been stuck in an indefinite hiatus for four years now.

My knowledge of Darkwing Duck is relatively limited. The artstyle looks competent at least. Even if I don't know the series that well, I can still riff it in case it has bad writing. That being said, if it has been on a four year hiatus, that's a good indigation that it's just straight up cancelled.

I'm new in the tma fandom so I'm not super familiar with the going ons within the fandom. what is this about the fandom being homophobic regarding twinks? not trying to stir anything up, I'm just curious as to in what way this is a thing.

a lot of fandoms, TMA included, seem to consider twinks an Acceptable Target. calling Elias the token White Podcast Twink, and referring to any headcanon of Martin they don’t like as “twinkifying” him, and catapulting from that to be insulting.

what people mean to say is “skinny.” but instead they say “twink” and it’s frankly pissing me off. treating twinks as an Acceptable Target when just a few years ago the Pulse shooting in my state happened sure makes me uncomfortable.

and again, it’s not just TMA. my friend is in Fire Emblem fandom right now and the exact same shit anytime anyone writes/draws a certain character even a lil bit soft, and i am still baffled at someone throwing shade at “that twink from Check Please!” you know the webcomic that is about hockey and about living with homophobia in sports? yeah

as a trend, i hate it. it makes me fucking uncomfortable and it’s getting so common i see it at least once a week (though sometimes i hit jackpot and it shows up on my dash like five times in a day! whoo)

i’m not here for looking at an extremely visible group of queer people and making them into a punchline. or, at worst, portraying them as a bad thing. every time i’ve seen someone referring to “twink martin” it someone insulting another person’s headcanon, and fuck that and fuck off and get a life.

like two weeks ago, my boss at work noted with bemusement that gay men (as in, gay men she can recognize as a straight person) always carry pepper spray. and i laughed with her about it but also. there’s a fucking reason they do. esp in Florida.

my point is... twinks are good. twinks deal with a lot of bullshit. twinks are not our Acceptable Targets. when you say “twink” when you mean “conventionally attractive” you are showing your ass. no one is immune to homophobic propaganda.

Lap, yes. Hair, no. And not from his own lack of persistence, I assure you. Nevar, that monstrous crow, certainly enjoys testing me with that.

He seems to assume that since Jonathan allows it, I’ll do the same. I’ll have you know I take a bit more stock in my appearance, and do my best to keep my hair in order. But, when he plays by the rules... my frabjous little Jubjub bird knows he is always welcomed to rest in my lap and soak in my affections.

I was kinda defensive about the "B99 is cop propaganda" before reading what you wrote on it. simply because you made good arguments but also did not deny that the show is doing so much good in other aspects. before now I've only seen "fuck this show because ACAB!" with no nuance whatsoever. he way you talk about it makes me feel like I am allowed to like the show. I know that should go without saying, but I'm very anxious and you know how it is on tumblr... so thank you

There’s a persistent assumption--one that I myself am prone to as often as not--that if something has bad messages, that not only counteracts any good it has done but meant it should not be seen/read/heard by anyone, and that the only moral action is to blockade it.

But, the fact of the matter is, that kind of thinking just leads one to defend censorship. I used to do it myself. For about 6 months, I honestly and unironically believed that steven universe of all things was a danger to society because.... it showed Lapis Lazuli entering into a violent, abusive, toxic relationship with Jasper. And I could not conceive of a way where that was okay, where that was allowed.

I’m ashamed of the things I said during those months, now, because I realize that the show wasn’t trying to say abuse was good or that abused people fighting against their abusers are just as bad, or any of those things, and that realization, that something I love could have something I so utterly loathe shown in it, and still be a force for good was my first step towards realizing that even shows which have terrible things in them and present those terrible things as good or natural or praiseworthy can still be forces for good, too.

And even further still, if some piece of art is bad, is presenting bad ideas, is a mockery of all I hold dear... that doesn’t mean there is nothing to be learned from it, and that doesn’t mean that a well-informed audience cannot consume that art, critique it, and engage with it.

Things can be good and still hae bad points, and things can be bad but still sere a aluable purpose.

I just wish that criticizing something I love weren’t treated as hysterical iolence and demanding that anyone else who loes it too be punished for Bad Think.

I understand how peopel got this defensie. A lot of genuinely cruel things are said under the guise of “necessary criticism,” but like....

Criticism is still necessary. It doesn’t stop being useful to think about the flaws in a beloed piece of art just because some peopel will blow those flaws out of proportion and pretend that art should not exist.
