Maison Ikkoku is a shining example of the romance genre because it really perfected that classic formula: boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy is tormented by the mysterious man who lives in his wall

This gal still needs some work, but I figured I'd post her design here in hopes of praise to create a paper trail of accountability so I might actually finish work on this. I love designing aliens partly because of the goofiness of flipping between image search tabs of such disparate subjects as horses, praying mantises, and Queen Victoria XD

I don't want to connect her too strongly (or offensively) to any real-world religions, so definitely let me know if her outfit looks like any particular religious costume. I'm worried that trying to make the outfit look less like a nun's habit may have pushed it closer to a Middle Eastern or Indian look, but I wouldn't know what terms to look up to check on it

Character design ramble time (+ new-story-in-development announcement to pressure me into actually working on it)

When I design characters (or at least when I used to, I haven't done it much in recent years), I'd usually only do a couple of quick and very similar-looking sketches before moving on to the final art, because I usually have a pretty strong idea of what I want the character to look like before I ever put pencil to paper. You can see that with human guy Virgil here (a mashup of the protagonist of Failsafe and actor Harvey Guillén), how little he changes from the first sketch to the last. So it was extr-e-e-e-emely frustrating that I just couldn't figure out a design I liked for Pik, his alien love interest.

The first two pages were done back in December, and I felt like I'd finalized Pik's design, it checked off basically everything I wanted to communicate about his character. But there was just something about it I didn't like. The digital sketches came last week, when I decided to focus on developing this story again, but again I just didn't like anything. The story is completely written (except for some revisions), so Pik's personality is pretty solidly set on the page, and none of these visuals seemed to fit him. Besides which, since it's a love story from Virgil's point of view, I felt like I wouldn't be able to draw it properly unless I could empathize with his feelings, and there was nothing about looking at this mouse guy that made me think "Yeah, okay, I can understand falling deeply in love with him." I felt like Guillermo del Toro trying to make The Shape Of Water's fishman sexy so the viewer would believe the romance, except that I'm asexual with a very different design sense XD

The page-o'-faces happened after putting together a collage of various animal and alien designs that spark joy in me and looking for design similarities between them. My main takeaways were an egg-shaped head, low facial features, big angled eyes, and a dainty short snout, but even then I went through a lot of variations and none of them seemed right for the character.

Finally in the last two pages I combined the ideas from the page-o'-faces back with the first "final" Pik design, which still felt the most Pik-like to me, and I think I've actually got it. With some adjustments to Virgil and costume changes, looking at these characters makes me genuinely happy and excited to draw them, VS just shrugging and going "Well I guess I could draw that over and over."

Now here's hoping the rest of the design work isn't this tough :'D

i admire your love for an underrated dragon ball character! yamcha's grown on me a lot, especially his earliest depiction. his girl-driven anxiety is....strangly relatable 🤨

Oh yeah, I never even noticed Yamcha as a kid, but as an adult I love him 😂 For me it's seeing that Former Gifted Kid feeling in him, where he was super cool and in control (except for the girl anxiety) living as a bandit out in the desert, but as soon as he left he started getting consistently knocked on his butt. BUT ALSO that he's persistent enough to keep trying, thinking "it'll totally work this time!"

So I understand when people get frustrated watching him constantly fail and be killed and be mocked by other fans, but I LOVE to watch him fail because he reminds me of me. (Except I wish I had his confidence)
