roofin
so this week has been a bit hectic, and i worked the farmer’s market yesterday and still feel like if anyone wants to write an accurate farmer’s market a/u of anything they should hit me up. (hint: there should be more politics and somebody should be a little bit mad with power)
but anyway today was The Big Day for the Roof Going On and it went really well. Firstly the weather was glorious; low 40s (F) to start and then it warmed right up to the mid 60s, clear and sunny, blue skies, very aesthetic fall color on all the leaves. I got my real camera out, it was so pretty. No wind, unlike yesterday. No threat of rain. I have exhausted all my karma points; that was all i could have asked for. It was really just perfect weather.
Cut for pics & too much detail, of course.
We got a crew of five-- Dude came out for this purpose, and so it was me, Dude, BIL, Farmsister, and then I called in the favor for M-L of having helped her move, and she said of course she’d come.
I went out at 8am with BIL, and we tore off the two top half-planks at the roof peak, so there’d be a proper air gap for ventilation. Had to cut out a little strip of the roofing underlayment too, and this made me so nervous, because it meant destroying what weatherproofing I had.
Tumblr media
image: looking up at my cabin’s sleeping loft, the sky is visible at the peak of the roof through an opening approximately six inches wide.
But we got all set up, and double-checked the plans and got our materials set up. And then we set to work.
Tumblr media
image: the cabin, with the roof covered in green Tyvek, my brother in law sitting across the peak, a ladder hung from the peak next to him and two stepladders in the foreground. Note to the right that there is an exposed bit of rafters-- those are the fly rafters, built off the end of the building to be an extra bit of overhang for the roof. In the background, the trees immediately behind the cabin are a riot of fall color, mostly sugar maples in shades of oranges and yellow and some red, with some of it still green.
I started off being on the stepladder, screwing down the bottom edge of the roof, but I gave that job to Farmsister because my left elbow has never been the same since I overdid things helping M-L move. (She showed up at 10, which was when we’d told her to come; we realized before that that we probably weren’t actually going to need her, so we told her to take her time and bring us donuts. Which she did, because she’s a sport.) M-L then saw me flexing and rubbing my elbow and was like “oh no what did you do to it” and i did not have the heart to tell her, so I just said I’m getting old.
Part of the reason I’d figured ML could be the 5th crew member is that if we didn’t need her, I knew she’d be fine just standing around being the peanut gallery. Anyone else would feel weird or be mad, but she wouldn’t care, and I was right, she mostly stood around and chased down screws the actual workers dropped, and Dude and I were not terribly busy but spent our time carefully prying apart the metal roof sheets which were damp and so had stuck together, and then carefully carried them over one at a time and handed them up to the folks on the roof.
Tumblr media
Image: half of the south side of the roof is clad in metal; BIL is on the ladder hooked over the roof peak, and Farmsister is on the tall stepladder leaning on the screw gun as she puts in the screws right above the eaves.
We went up one side and then went around and did the other side, and started putting the ridge caps on as we went-- there were three sections of ridge cap, so one for about every four sheets of roof-- and we found the foam insulation that’s meant to go in as a spacer there, and got that put in. Still need to add the little insulation thingies under the eaves but that’s something for another time. (The kit hadn’t come with those, so Dude had to go drive around to several home improvement stores to find them all in the afternoon.)image
Tumblr media
image: Farmsister and BIL each separately operating an electric screw gun, screwing down the metal roof panels in an artistically-framed photo that shows the very blue sky and the brilliant fall foliage of the tree overhanging the cabin.
We stopped for lunch at 1pm with one ridge cap still off but all the roof panels in place, and went in and had a white bean chicken chili that Farmsister had put in the crockpot overnight. It was very good. And we dismissed M-L at that point.
Tumblr media
image: This is what the cabin looked like when we stopped for lunch. You can’t see that the last section of ridgecap isn’t on yet. You can see how bright the foliage is all around! It’s so pretty.
After lunch, just BIL and I came back out, and I handed him a few things but then he mostly was just puttering, getting the foam spacers in under the ridgecap and so on and so forth. So I went in and dug out the insulation batts I’ve had in the corner ever since we put the insulation in under the loft where it overhangs the porch, and I put on a mask and a kerchief over my hair and long sleeves and went up in the loft and stapled those batts up until I ran out of staples on the last batt.
It was only enough to do one wall, and not the peak, so it’s not enough that it’ll really be any warmer up there. But it’s something, and it’s a bunch less I’ll have to do later. The rest of the insulation batts are up in the barn loft and I was not feeling up to going and getting them.
We got the last ridgecap up finally, when Dude got back with the esoteric insulating pieces he had to drive all over robin hood’s barn to find. (BIL had also gone and borrowed a set of power shears from the neighbor; the plans said to overlap the last sheets a little extra but the measurements did not actually work to allow that, so we had to trim the edge of the roof to fit; it was too floppy to be left overhanging.)
Tumblr media
Image: this is the last picture I took, which is of BIL still on the roof peak ladder just putting a few final screws in, but it shows the ridge cap in place and the overhang trimmed to fit correctly, and the way the light caught in the foliage as the sun got close to setting.
We finished just in time to go in for dinner. Mom had made steak and mushroom pie, which is just about my favorite thing ever. I’d brought a bottle of champagne, so we had that before dinner.
I am feeling absolutely delighted; it’s not anything tangibly different in living in the cabin but it’s so nice to have a real roof. I’m very excited and I still haven’t picked up all the pots and pans and dishes and trays I had set out to catch drips the last time it rained but I’m going to, and take them in and wash them somewhere, because I don’t need them anymore!!
so anyway. that was sunday. but i got no writing done this weekend, needless to say, LOL. Still. Big news! Big progress.
I kind of really want it to rain now...

Wooden Barn for haydrying loft and equipment storage in Dolenjci, Slovenia
The barn has an external structure with inboard enclosure plank walls. The straw roof appears to have an added light metal ridge cap. The rear of the roof has a full hip and the front a pent-hip form. Each of the wooden columns has braces to the head plate; the bases of the columns appear to rest on large stones. The wooden purlins accept the straw roofing material directly to allow for ventilation of the organic material. (photo 1988)

TW: guns, blood, death, dismemberment, mention of claustrophobia
Private Leah Conroy surveyed the snow-swept shoreline through binoculars as her team splashed ashore from the drop boat. The biting arctic wind cut through her insulated fatigues as she moved to join the squad assembling on the rocky shoreline.
Vkhodnoy Island was known for its relentless snowfall, a frozen wasteland where everything was veiled in a thick blanket of white.
Clad in white camouflage tactical outfits, the team blended seamlessly into the snowy surroundings, their presence almost ethereal against the backdrop of the frozen landscape.
The frigid weather wreaked havoc on their ability to establish a stable connection, causing the transmissions to crackle and distort. “Copy that. Hicks out,” The captain signed off contact with the base and focused on the mission. Twelve hours to infiltrate an enemy stronghold in some of the harshest conditions on earth. Just another day on the job.
Captain Hicks turned to his squad in their winter camo. “Alright, listen up. Intel says the Russkies have a secret research lab about 10 klicks inland. Our boys are being held there against their will. We go in hard and fast, extract the package, and call in the exfil. Stay frosty and keep your eyes peeled for hostiles,” The team disembarked swiftly in their white camo gear.
Leah shivered dramatically. “Brr, it's colder than a penguin's behind out here!” The others chuckled quietly at her theatrics while checking weapons and gear.
“Mission first, frostbite second. Focus up, Private,” The Captain shot her a look.
The team double-checked weapons and gear before falling into patrol formation behind the Captain. They trekked through dense snowfall under leaden skies. Navigation was difficult but the battle-hardened Captain Hicks pushed his team relentlessly towards the coordinates of the research station in which the kidnapped scientists were being held.
Captain Hicks led the squad at a brisk pace through the blizzard, trusting his inner compass to stay on course. Somewhere up ahead were hostages in need of rescue. And nothing, not snow or Russians, would stop him from bringing them home alive.
The squad fell silently into patrol formation, sticking to cover as they advanced. Captain Hicks scanned constantly through his night-vision goggles, alert for any movement through the swirling snow. They moved with practiced efficiency, communicating via hand signals.
Within an hour, the welcome sight of scout Corporal Chen emerged from the whitewash. “Cap! No contact, but I've got the lay of the land. This way to the facility,”
“Lead on, Chen. Let's go get our people and get the hell off this ice cube,” Captain nodded. “Hoohah,” Leah muttered into her collar. Time to raise some hell.
As the squad crested the ridge after an hour of walking, Captain Hicks signaled a halt. Finally it loomed into view - a hulking metal complex half-buried in snowdrifts, ringed by guard towers. The Captain signaled a stealth approach.
“Facility spotted, no guards visible on the perimeter. Orders Captain?” Leah asked.
The dark shape of the facility loomed through the blizzard ahead. No patrols or guards in sight - a red flag if ever she saw one.
“Ramirez, Puckett, do a perimeter sweep. Keep low and watch each other's six,” Captain ordered and the two peeled off with nods, vanishing into the whitewash. “I don't like this one bit,”
Half an hour later the perimeter was secured, Ramirez and Puckett were on overwatch and everything seemed to be under control, so much so that the Captain sent Private Conroy and Corporal Chen to infiltrate the structure.
Leah pulled up her night vision goggles and crept closer to the facility, scanning for points of entry. The main doors were sealed tight, but a ventilation shaft beckoned on the roof.
Leah and Chen grabbed gear and made for the duct entrance. As she pried open the grille, cold tendrils of unease crept up her spine. Something wasn't right here… but their orders were clear. With a grim look to the Corporal, she led the way into the gaping black maw of the facility.
Alongside Chen, Leah fired off a grappling line and began climbing, bracing against the icy wind.
The two descended into the claustrophobic darkness of the air tunnel. The tight squeeze and suffocating darkness threatened to overwhelm them.
Peering inside, Leah saw empty corridors stretching away in the green glow of her NVGs. Too empty. She dropped down. The Captain’s voice crackled through her comms. “Conroy - report. Anything?”
“Looks like we hit the party late, Cap,” Leah chambered a round and advanced, senses screaming that something was very wrong in this silent, snowbound place, she added, “No lifesigns detected on exterior scans,”
Hicks frowned, his voice cracking in the comms. “Those ultranationalist scumbags are up to something. See where they’re holding our boys,”
Private Conroy and Corporal Chen crept through the silent facility, flashlights cutting through the darkness.
Damaged walls and strange claw marks greeted them, raising hairs on Leah's neck. She played her light along the floor and froze. Partial footprints unlike any bootprint led away into the gloom.
She didn’t know what to make of it, her training was failing and nothing could have prepared her for the carnage she was about to experience.
Rounding a corner, they found the control room door hanging off its rails. Inside was worse than anything they could've imagined. Shredded remains were strewn everywhere, congealing pools of gore coating every surface. A half-eaten arm still clutched a torn-off leg.
Leah's light fell upon a grizzly scene. Chen swore softly in Mandarin as he raised a fist, halting her advance as he moved ahead to scout ahead. Leah fought down a surge of bile. “What the hell could've done this?”
Corporal cautiously took a closer step when a guttural roar shook the halls before the man could even react, something massive charged from the shadows. Chen cried out and opened fire even as massive claws closed around his torso. He was ripped away into the void, bullets spraying wildly.
“Corporal!” Leah shouted, hesitating to unload her rifle at the dark mass, fearing she might hit the Corporal in this darkness. The—whatever it was, bellowed in pain but did not release, dragging Chen deeper into the facility's bowels.
Leah contacted the Captain as she sprinted behind, “Contact! Something's in here, sir - it's got Corporal Chen! Request immediate back—”
Her voice was cut short by an ear splitting crash. Leah whirled to find the source - a set of pipes had burst, spewing toxic gas in a noxious cloud. Through watering eyes, Leah saw the gas was spreading fast through the facility's vents.
She gave chase to the sound of gunfire deeper into the maze of halls coughing as noxious fumes began to fill the air. Finally, she spotted Chen's flashlight rolling on the floor up ahead. Beyond, his rifle fired on full-auto as heavy footfalls closed in.
Whatever was in here with them, it had the upper hand - and time was running out to even the odds.
As Leah fled down the blood-slicked corridor, a strange hissing sound began echoing through the vents. She skidded to a halt, the noise triggering an instinctive sense of danger. Then, without warning, grates burst open ahead, belching clouds of vapor into the hallway.
“Fuck…” Leah rasped. The noxious fumes were already thick in her lungs. Her head spun as she sank to her knees. Behind, she heard the monster roar, uncaring of the poison seeping into the facility.
Through watering eyes, Leah glimpsed a maintenance closet. With her last reserves of willpower, she lunged inside and slammed the door. This was no human enemy. As Leah backpedaled, she choked out into her comm, “C-captain, it's not the Russians… It's…”
The gas was already taking hold, dragging Leah down into darkness. Her last thought before losing consciousness was of Chen, and hoping he'd somehow survived.
Then she knew no more, slumped helpless in the tiny room as the creature's howls echoed nearer. Somewhere in the depths of the facility, ominous forces were at work - and Leah feared the team had stumbled right into a nightmare not of their own making. She had to wake up, had to warn the Captain...
The gas held her in its paralyzing grip, and all she could do was slip further into oblivion's embrace.

Metal Roof Ridge Vent
Maximizing Ventilation Efficiency with Metal Roof Ridge Vents
In the realm of roofing, ventilation is often an overlooked aspect, yet it plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy and durable roof system. Metal roofs, known for their longevity and durability, require proper ventilation just like any other roofing material. Among the various ventilation solutions available, metal roof ridge vents stand out as an efficient and effective way to ensure optimal airflow within the attic space. In this article, we'll delve into the intricacies of metal roof ridge vents, exploring their benefits, installation process, and how they contribute to the overall performance of a metal roof system.
The Importance of Ventilation in Metal Roofing:
Effective ventilation is essential for metal roofing systems to prevent moisture buildup, heat accumulation, and premature deterioration of roofing materials. Without proper ventilation, hot air can become trapped in the attic, causing the roof to overheat, leading to various issues such as shingle damage, reduced energy efficiency, and even structural damage over time.
Understanding Metal Roof Ridge Vents:
Metal roof ridge vents are designed to run along the peak of the roof, allowing hot air to escape while drawing in cooler air from the eaves or soffits. This continuous airflow helps regulate temperature and moisture levels in the attic, preventing the buildup of heat and humidity that can compromise the integrity of the roof.
Benefits of Metal Roof Ridge Vents:
Enhanced Air Circulation: Metal roof ridge vents promote efficient air circulation, preventing heat buildup and reducing the risk of moisture-related issues such as mold and mildew growth.
Improved Energy Efficiency: By reducing the amount of heat trapped in the attic, metal roof ridge vents can help lower cooling costs during hot summer months, making them a sustainable and cost-effective solution.
Extended Roof Lifespan: Proper ventilation provided by metal roof ridge vents can prolong the lifespan of the roof by minimizing temperature fluctuations and reducing the risk of thermal expansion and contraction, which can cause premature wear and tear on roofing materials.
Prevention of Ice Dams: In colder climates, metal roof ridge vents help prevent the formation of ice dams by maintaining consistent attic temperatures, reducing the likelihood of snow melting and refreezing at the eaves.
Installation Process:
Installing metal roof ridge vents requires careful planning and precision to ensure optimal performance. Here's a general overview of the installation process:
Preparation: Before installing the ridge vent, it's essential to ensure that the roof is properly prepared, including removing any existing roofing materials and debris from the ridge area.
Measurement and Cutting: Measure the length of the ridge and cut the ridge vent to size using tin snips or a saw, ensuring a proper fit along the entire length of the roof peak.
Securing the Vent: Position the ridge vent along the peak of the roof, ensuring that it is centered and aligned correctly. Secure the vent in place using roofing nails or screws, making sure to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for spacing and fastener placement.
