May I ask what your MerRen is based off of?

Hello! Sorry for the late reply, Tumblr has been pretty bad about sending me notifications. I wouldn't say I based Ren's design on any one thing in particular.

The most direct thing I referenced were the shape of lionfish fins for his dorsal, pelvic fins, and spines. I also referenced frilled sharks for his general body shape and fin placement. I'm very fond of long, eel like mermaids similar to medival sea monsters.

I based the colors off of his black and red color scheme, but shifted the tones and hues to make them a bit more saturated. Hence the dark blue/black and the more vibrant reddish pink. I wanted him to look dangerous, but still approachable.

A few people tell me he looks like an oar fish, which would have been easier to use as a base reference, but I hadn't considered that until someone pointed it out, lol.

Merry MerMay! Self indulgent Akechi mermaid designs to stave off art block. I liked the idea of him being able to shift the color of his scales to camouflage or trick prey into thinking he's a chill guy that definitely won't eat you.

I don’t know why I take forever to do a decent illustration but I do. For those that know about my Merren AU that I’ve been planning for a while, here’s how they look like in color. I headcanon that merpeople’s fin are usually determined by the eye color. Something about melanin I didn’t go too deep with the science of it.
