I found a #mermaidspurse out on a lovely bright beach walk today. These are egg cases from sharks or rays that protect a developing embryo ... 11.02.21 Typography [GDC]

We were looking at movement in typography last week in the GDC workshop. I was a bit stuck on what direction to move with in my design elective. Sharon suggested I work with paper cutouts, inspired by my research of the vibrant, playful illustrations of Annu Kilpeläinen. I have been thinking about my project so far, and linking ideas. I decided to work with the mermaids purse again. I  I felt the purse embodied a previous theme I touched on - the restrictive abortion laws which we were ruled by in Ireland - as mermaids purses are actually eggsacs of sharks and skates. I wanted to use a play on the word of ‘tide’ as the eggsacs are washed up on the shore by waves - and how women were tied up in guilt and shame in these situations, against their will. 

I did a couple of hasty sketches and colour charts and then did a mockup with paper (apologies for the terrible pritt-stick job and dog hair) 

My final illustration was done with coloured paper too, and touched up digitally on Krita.
