If you have already talked about this, I apologize, but what do you think about this scene ?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't remember the context, but it's quite heartbreaking that Merlin makes it into a joke, knowing fully well there's the possibility of Arthur dying.
Oh yay! A Merthur question! I've referred to it in the past but I haven't spoken it about it specifically. From a previous post:
but this moment:
Tumblr media
I love this moment so much because Arthur is doing his best to be stoic, to show as little concern as possible because as he said in season 2:
Tumblr media
but for one second when he clenches his jaw and sort of inhales, he’s about to break, his emotion is about to overwhelm him and he’s trying to hold it together but Merlin keeps asking to stay by his side, to just be with him and it’s making it hard for him to concentrate on being emotionless so he just ends up bickering with Merlin because he’s worried and upset and scared and can’t Merlin just do what he’s told and get better??
Um, the context is actually pretty loaded because this is the episode Merlin finds Balinor, and obviously Arthur doesn't know that Balinor is Merlin's father just that he's the [apparent] last dragonlord that will help them but Balinor dies so Merlin's going through the emotional rollercoaster of having met his dad for the first time and then losing him pretty immediately afterwards
Tumblr media
with Arthur being there for the whole thing but without knowing what's actually happening. He's focused on the fate of Camelot and so he thinks his only chance of saving his kingdom is gone
Tumblr media
so when we get to the scene, Arthur thinks he's going on kind of a fool's errand riding out to meet Kilgharrah
Tumblr media
and he's actually trying to prepare Merlin for the event of his death
Tumblr media
like you see him think about how Merlin would react to him dying
Tumblr media
and he's asking him not to be sad, don't grieve for me, don't cry for me because he doesn't like the thought of Merlin in pain especially in pain over him and it's this very patient, protective, he's-a-gentle-soul kind of conclusion and reasoning
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and it's not that he wants him to be hardened, he wants him to understand that these things happen and he just wants him to be OK and he communicates that by saying that he tells young knights to move on
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and when Merlin makes that crack, it's sweet because it really just speaks to the intimacy of the moment
Tumblr media
that he tries to deflect by cracking a joke like 'haha, you don't even mean that much to me, bro!'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"Anyway, let's go fight a dragon together because I'm never leaving your side!"
Tumblr media
which actually begets another vulnerable moment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that Arthur kind of backs away from because WHOA that's some direct intimacy there, bro
Tumblr media
[after quietly reveling in awe of how brave he finds Merlin just seconds before]
Tumblr media
so, another joke because HAHA WE'RE JUST TWO BROS WHO ARE INTENSELY DEVOTED TO EACH OTHER
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PLAYFUL-THANKS-BRO PUNCH
Tumblr media
These fucking dorks.

This scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*inhales and exhales deeply*
I think I know what they’re going for. I think they’re trying to show Merlin being worried about Arthur’s wound, that’s why he’s looking at him.
However, that is NOT what it looks like.
This isn’t even a context issue. I knew the context, but that’s not what I saw when I watched this scene. It’s still not what I see, even trying to look for that interpretation.
Breakdown Time:
From the beginning, the starting action of this scene is Arthur taking off his shirt. Makes sense, he usually sleeps shirtless and they’re clearly about to go to bed. Also works to let the wound breathe more and not be trapped under a sweaty tunic. Nothing wrong with this.
Then we get a deliberate shot of Merlin looking toward him following the action. Let’s see:
If it was simply a reaction to seeing movement, he probably wouldn’t have turned his whole head and most likely would’ve moved back once his brain registered it.
We can argue that he’s looking at the wound, which is definitely true to some extent, but the look on his face is not the typical “worried about Arthur” face he usually has. His features are too relaxed, too soft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Merlin’s worried about Arthur’s life or safety, he always looks very stressed and tense. He has no hesitations voicing his concerns. He never has!
And yet when he looks at the wound on Arthur’s back, there’s no reaction to it. He looks thoughtful rather than worried. Plus, if that’s what they wanted us to think, they could’ve had Arthur visibly or audibly show worse pain. If he had groaned or winced, Merlin’s attention on him makes sense, but Arthur really doesn’t do anything out of the ordinary.
Moving on, Arthur looks over his shoulder and sees Merlin looking at him. There’s nothing unusual about this situation, but Merlin averts his eyes like he’s been caught doing something he shouldn’t, or simply didn’t want Arthur to know he was doing.
There’s no real reason for him to look away if he was worried about the wound. Plus directly after that, when Arthur asks what’s wrong, he refuses to answer. Obviously we know there’s a bigger reason why he’s upset, but he ends up lying about it anyway, claiming to be worried about Camelot. Why not use the wound as an excuse? What? Is he nervous to bring it up, or worried it might irritate Arthur?
The next day he’s directly calling out the wound as a problem, so clearly he had no qualms about bringing it up. He’s definitely been paying attention to it the entire episode.
Tumblr media
After this opening, the scene goes back to “normal” but for these few moments, there is something seriously off about the vibe.
I mean off in the way Merlin’s behaving, specifically toward Arthur. Obviously we know he’s stressed as fuck about meeting Balinor, so obviously that can be blamed, and we know that’s what’s bothering him once they start talking. If they wanted him to seem upset enough for Arthur to notice, he wouldn’t even have to look over at him. Honestly, having his back completely turned would probably be a red flag by itself.
There is something so weird about the energy right before their conversation. It’s a very strange choice if that weren’t intending for it to have subtext; they claimed that gayness wasn’t intentional basically up until the finale. Could they have been lying? Yeah, but who can know for sure?
Anyway, that’s another reason why these two never leave my brain!

arthur 1x11 analysis
sort of
HERE to the other stuff i wrote about merlin
what i truly deeply love about merlin 1x11, the labyrinth of gedref is not merlin calling arthur out for killing the unicorn, or him telling gedref that he trusts arthur with his life, or merlin following arthur in the labyrinth against orders, or him being smart.
it's not even arthur wanting to sacrifice himself for the kingdom, or him taking the blame for what it's happening to his people and showing everyone that he will be a great, just king, or him not allowing merlin to drink poison in his place.
all these things are great, and beautiful, and they just say a lot about how great these two are, both as individuals and together, ready to sacrifice themselves for camelot and for each other.
no.
what truly gets me, what has my heart in a clench, what keeps me awake at night is this:
arthur saying that he is glad that merlin is with him.
Tumblr media
"I'm glad you're here, Merlin"
this is the part of the episode that most leaves me screaming and crying and sobbing.
because arthur, at this point, already knows he is going to drink the poison. he knows is he the one that will drink it, no matter what self sacrificing merlin has to say.
arthur here is not saying he is glad merlin is there because merlin is going to take his place and die for him. no, even if what he says just before may make someone think.
"I had no idea you were so keen to die for me."
"Trust me, I can hardly believe it myself."
this may make someone believe that arthur is glad that merlin wants to sacrifice himself for arthur (not that arthur will ever allow it).
but the truth is that arthur is glad that, since he will drink the poison and most likely die, he will at least be able to talk to merlin one last time. he is glad that merlin is there with him because he didnt want to die alone. he is glad merlin is there with him because merlin will be the last person he will see and the last person to see him.
and ultimately, he is glad that merlin is with him because merlin gives him the courage he need to do this.
arthur is brave enough. he is brave because he loves camelot and would die for his people, because he loves them.
but arthur is also brave because he loves merlin, be it friendship or something more, whatever suits you.
arthur is brave and merlin makes him feel brave as well.
and so, arthur is glad that merlin is with him.
he is glad that it's merlin the last person he may ever talk.
his first and true friend.
his loyal and brave servant.
his other half, even if he doesn't know it yet, but I'm sure he can feel it.
if arthur were to die, he is glad to do so with merlin by his side.
and the next thing that breaks me the most is that, whenever arthur has to face danger, he tells merlin to go away and save himself. and merlin always finds a way to tell him that no, he won't leave him. like in 2x13, the last dragonlord:
"Are you really going to face this dragon with me?"
"I'm not going to sit here and watch. I know it's hard for you to understand how I feel, but... well, I care a hell of a lot about that armour, I'm not going to let you mess it up."
which leaves arthur staring at merlin with undeniable affection.
Tumblr media
or in 3x12, the coming of arthur:
"Merlin, you should go with them."
"Nah, I've seen the woods already."
and i can go on and on about every time merlin refused to leave arthur's side, like any other servant may do, like even a normal friend could do. and every time, arthur looks at merlin with relief.
and i truly believe that, every time, arthur thinks: if i am to die today, I'm glad to die with you at my side.
he thinks, every time: I'm glad you're here, merlin

I have said it before, but Kilgharrah has a parallel-opposite arc to Morgana. His character is redeemed in the same streak of episodes where Morgana goes from an ally to a major villain. While Kilgharrah was often self-serving and manipulative in the first 2 seasons, this changes by the end of season 2 because Merlin chooses to show him mercy after incapacitating him. It’s the first real kindness that Kilgharrah has experienced in well over 20 years. Whereas, when Merlin shows Morgana mercy by making the deal with Morgause to save her after she’s been incapacitated, Morgana returns more vengeful than ever. Back to Kilgharrah, though…
Not only does he indebt himself to Merlin, he comes to see Merlin in an entirely new way. Before, when he would call Merlin kin, it was in the most literal sense—both are creatures of magic, cut from the same cloth, and should be allies. But now, they’ve formed a bond from that kinship (and in a literal soul connection sense, too, no less). Kilgharrah’s plea strikes Merlin with so much force because they’re both now the last of their kind, and Merlin cannot help but consider and understand what Kilgharrah has been through, despite the destruction he’s caused, because it’s happened to Merlin, too. When they see each other next, this is what they have to say:
Merlin: I didn't think you'd answer my call.
Kilgharrah: Merlin, I could not resist a dragonlord, even if I wanted to.
Merlin: I’m grateful, thank you.
Let’s focus on that: “…even if I wanted to.” Kilgharrah did not want to resist Merlin’s call for help because he’s come to care about Merlin in his own way. This development is easily traced back to Merlin’s show of mercy. It cannot be stressed enough: this was the first kindness Kilgharrah had been shown in over 20 years, after rotting away in a dungeon when he was betrayed in every way possible, suffering from the grief of his entire species going extinct on Uther’s orders. And with this one show of mercy, Merlin changed the heart of a creature that everyone had already dismissed as a monster (the same way Merlin sees himself), one who sought his revenge by razing an entire city to the ground. From the start, Merlin treats him as a person: “Why are you doing this? You’re killing innocent people!” No one who saw him as a mere beast acting on its true nature would ask a moral quandary of him. And in the end, this path leads to Kilgharrah being spared, and Camelot repeatedly being saved as a result.
Kilgharrah’s sincerity in his care for Merlin is consistent in later seasons, and is seen in more than just his rescues. In 4x02, he plainly urges Merlin not to sacrifice himself, despite the fact that Arthur’s life (and thus, Kilgharrah’s ultimate freedom) hangs in the balance.
Merlin: Arthur intends to sacrifice himself to heal the Veil. It is my destiny to protect him; you taught me that.
Kilgharrah: Merlin, you must not do this.
He shortly follows this with something we’ve known since Merlin mended the rift between them in 2x13:
Kilgharrah: From the moment I met you, I saw something that was invisible. Now, it is there for all to see […] It will be an empty world without you, young warlock.
Having failed to convince Merlin to let someone else be the sacrifice, Kilgharrah commends him. Not only that, Kilgharrah mourns him.
This is all to say that Kilgharrah’s actions in seasons 1 & 2 should not be the sole focal point for our judgment of him, when he undergoes such an extreme change of character. Furthermore, there is no reason to believe that Kilgharrah’s faith in the prophecies is anything but genuine. Alongside his newfound care for Merlin, his ultimate goal is his own freedom, and he believes that Arthur is the key to that.
Kilgharrah: We need Arthur to live […] Your destiny is to protect the young Pendragon until he claims his crown, and when he does, magic can be returned to the realm. Only then will I be free.
This logic is in line with what occurred in 5x13. Kilgharrah wouldn’t have said or done any of what he does in 1x13 if he did not believe that Arthur’s ascension to king would lead to his own freedom (even if it didn’t take immediate effect). Arthur’s place on the throne made room for an end to the wars, namely the one on magic. Kilgharrah did not make these prophecies up, nor is he the only one to believe in them. Alator and Finna possessed knowledge of the same prophecies, and both believed in Emrys’ vision/mission.
Kilgharrah had great knowledge himself, and tried to share that with Merlin to pave the best path, but he was not all-knowing, and he tells Merlin as much himself. Kilgharrah is merely a messenger, believer, and interpreter. So, he still believes the prophecy has come to pass, even if Arthur did end up dying anyways. The five kingdoms could now be united and magic restored to the land once the war was ended upon Morgana’s death. The prophecy was fulfilled within Arthur’s lifetime, despite the success of Arthur’s Bane. It did not go as Merlin expected, nor how Kilgharrah expected, but it still… went. This is what he means when he says, “No young man, no matter how great, can know his destiny.”
The idea that Kilgharrah simply played Merlin, when he was depending on Arthur as much as any creature of magic, and when he genuinely cared for Merlin as kin, is bad faith conjecture. How they got to the end point still mattered to him (i.e. Merlin must protect Arthur so that he has a chance to fulfill the prophecy), because that potential only existed through Arthur, and they all continued to suffer until that time came. Regardless of the age at which Arthur died, though, he was destined to fulfill these prophecies and return at Albion’s time of need. This, Kilgharrah knew. So is it any wonder that he maintained faith in it even after Arthur died? Especially after Arthur died, proving the prophecies true once again?
Kilgharrah: Merlin. There is nothing you can do.
Merlin: I've failed?
Kilgharrah: No, young warlock, for all that you have dreamt of building, has come to pass.
Merlin: I can't lose him! He's my friend!
Kilgharrah: Though no man, no matter how great, can know his destiny, some lives have been foretold. Merlin... Arthur is not just a King— he is the Once and Future King. Take heart, for when Albion's need is greatest, Arthur will rise again.
No, Kilgharrah did not predict the exact ending, but he did his best to help Merlin bring about the best possible outcome, and he said what he could to comfort Merlin when he was grieving Arthur. Kilgharrah was genuine, and his motives were in alignment with Merlin’s by the start of season 3.
