R.I.P Grandma Honey/Helena Stockwell: To those in my Extended Family Tree who’re Instagrammers or Tumblr users should already at least know what’s happened to my maternal grandmother, and to those who happen to be my followers who don’t know what’s happened to my maternal grandmother, especially to those who’ve probably just discovered my Instagram Posts Gallery or Tumblr Blog and are new to coming across my art on Instagram or Tumblr, I believe should know what just happened. According to what my mom had just told me last morning, Grandma Honey had passed away at 5am or 7am on Tuesday April 23rd 2024, my Mom and Siblings and I visited Grandma Honey one last time, we cried, we mourned, and today the rest of my Extended Family Tree and I who were closest to Grandma Honey are now currently grieving, some of us are pulling ourselves together, and some of us are still processing her passing, and as for me: I’m currently doing both, which is why I made this memorial portrait for Grandma Honey, so I hope my family, friends, and followers like this as I hope my late grandma in the afterlife likes what I’ve made for her too of course.

This is how the finished portrait turned out. Overall I’m pretty happy with it. I definitely feel that where I’m at currently my drawings look better than my paintings, but I’m trying to work on that. I have a theory that most people see the world in either line or color, and because of that either painting or drawing will come more easily to them. I’m definitely the kind of person who sees line before color/shape. I’ve been trying to notice patterns of light more lately, and be more free and bold with my use of color. This is the 30th portrait in a series I've started to memorialize lives lost to covid. This is Gregory Allan Leigh. Gregory passed away from covid in September of 2020. He was a mechanic from Southaven MS. Gregory was a loving husband, father, brother, son, nephew and uncle. His sister described him as funny, a prankster, loyal, and sarcastic. Greg enjoyed playing the drums, fostering pit bulls with this wife, and spending time with his wife and daughter. He was a father figure and friend, and was the glue that held his family together. Look closely to learn more about Gregory and the many reasons he was special ❤️ Project information: I am finishing up a series of portraits to memorialize lives lost to covid. I am no longer taking submissions for portraits. Portraits are drawn entirely with text (provided by families) describing who they were and the many reasons they were special. So many families were unable to grieve together or even hold funerals for their loved ones due to this awful pandemic. Participants in this project are offered the opportunity to come together to provide text, photos, and handwritten notes to be included in these collaborative word portraits. The hope is to help families through loss with art. The idea is to address the humanity behind the statistics. So many of us just see a staggering number of deaths, and don't entirely equate them with actual people.
