hello! First of all, thank you for creating the Yanqing's Happy Family AU! I'm kind of obsessed with it, ngl, it's like, they're soooo cute!!!

Anyway, do you have any HC of when Yanqing doing his first mission as a Cloud Knight? In my head I always thought of the dads as the kind of parent that would secretly follow (*cough*stalk*cough*) their kid on their very first errand to the market, and the thought of that happening here is hilarious lmao🥰🥰

Then again, I just love all HC of the dads being protective of Yanqing in general, like maybe from an assassination attempt? It'll make a good angst :D

They are very protective of Yanqing and I do have an assassination attempt on that is in the works. Still at the brainstorming phase thought so it'll be a while before it is written.

I wasn't sure which kind of mission you wanted so I provided 2 different ones. I love them being protective but anxious dads. Feel free to send more asks!!!

Supervised Mission

Up until he was 13, Yanqing's missions were always supervised by Jing Yuan or Jingliu. While the Xianzhou Alliance at heart was always at war, they did not have it in them to send Yanqing out on his own regardless of his skill. For those who stay behind, they are a bundle of nerves that grow more frantic each day. The battlefield is unpredictable and their little bird is so young and little. They could not bear it if his wings were clipped too early.

Even during supervised missions, there were always constant calls and follow-ups. Jing Yuan was always strict about not missing personal relationships with work, especially since it could lead to talks of Yanqing only achieving his position through nepotism. However, he would give constant updates and was only on the lookout for Yanqing's well-being. While he would sit back so his son could learn, any opponent that targeted his son would be quickly killed by Lightning Lord.

Jingliu, on the other hand, does not coddle Yanqing on missions. Coddling would only harm him and it is best he learn about the battlefield in a controlled environment. it was also why she refused to let the others join any mission Yanqing was on with the exception of Jing Yuan. Jingliu blocks the others before a mission due to their constant questions. One would think Dan Feng is the worst, but it's actually Yingxing. Dan Feng texts constantly at the beginning but will stop after a couple of hours. Yingxing sends a text every hour on the dot. "You guys are annoying. He's fine, if he wasn't I would text you."- JIngliu

First Solo Mission

A full-fledged assault by the Denizens of Abundance on a planetary system was met with the combined might of all six ships. Due to the scale of the battle and the need for all available personnel to be on the frontline, Yanqing's first solo mission on the battlefield was as reinforcements against the Windguard mecha beasts. At the same time, other members of his family were sent to different battles as well, leaving them unable to reach him.

Dan Feng, who was stationed on a water-filled planet due to his powers, was absolutely ferocious in battle. He cut through enemies without mercy. To him, the more they died, the less they were threats to his child. He also was extremely angry at being so far away and had no qualms about using his power to the fullest extent to end the battle quickly. The sooner he returned, the sooner he could see his child and tend to injuries. He could not find it in him to look at updates for Yanqing's battalion but he assumed if no messenger came, then his son was okay. "I need all of you to quickly die so I can go home and see my family."- Dan Feng after drowning a third of the enemy forces

Yingxing, despite being the most composed when it came to Yanqing, was filled with worry. He double, tripled checked his son's weapons before he left. He provided as much information as he could on the working on mechabeasts in the hopes the situation would be resolved before Yanqing arrived on the battlefield. Due to the days of waiting and overseeing the production of weapons, he was incredibly short with everyone though many understood why. Yingxing refused to check on anyone's status, partially because he was sure they were fine but also because any distressing news could impact his work and delay supplies and weapons to the frontlines. "You can tell that idiot of a supplies officer if he keeps delaying supplies to the front lines I will kill him!" - Yingxing to one of his students

Baiheng had joined other foxian pilots in a vicious battle against the wingweavers. She was the closest to Yanqing in terms of location and would constantly man the communication lines for updates on his situation. It went to the point where she would fall asleep with her radio tuned into the communication line and each morning she would check the casualty list. "Casualty list. Search. Yanqing. Unit name. Comet Orbit Fleet. Nothing! oh, thank Lan!"- Baiheng

Jingliu is easily the calmest in the situation. Older and more experienced than anyone else, she is very aware of the path of the Hunt and what it demands. Also, as Yanqing's teacher, she knows he will be fine. If he is old enough to copy her attacks, he will have no problem against the enemy. However, after every battle, she also checks the casualty list. "Baiheng, fine. Dan Feng, fine. Yingxing, fine. Jing Yuan, fine. Yanqing, fine. Good, they're all fine."- Jingliu

Jing Yuan was incredibly anxious. He did not fight as his time was spent strategizing not only for his fleet but the entire alliance. He did not have time to watch over matters concerning Yanqing much to his chagrin but he had ordered Qingzu to notify him of any updates no matter how small. He also found himself unable to sleep due to worry and during rare quiet periods, he spent it watching videos of Yanqing as a baby or looking at photos of them as a family to quell his aching heart. "He was so small back then. Soon, you'll be home Yanqing."- Jing Yuan who was getting teary-eyed after looking at photos of Yanqing playing with Mimi.

Yanqing made quite a stir on the battlefield. Not only did he take the Windguard head-on and chop its head off, but he also managed to strategically destroy their fleet. With their main offensive weapon out of the picture, the remaining enemy was in disarray and open to a swift and decisive offensive. "This is exhilarating!"- Yanqing developing a penchant for for fighting and the battlefield.

Yanqing was the last to make it back to the Luofu due to him being stationed the furthest from his family. He was, however, greeted with great excitement. Jing Yuan, who was the first to greet him once they were away from the other Cloud Knights, pulled him into a hug and checked over the wounds he got. Yingxing was next, having rushed over from the Artisanship Commission. He also pulled his child into a hug before demanding to see all his weapons, hoping to assess the damages and repair them before he was sent out again. Dan Feng had come rushing from treating a nasty cut on Baiheng's leg and demanded to see Yanqing's wounds. He later spent the next hour redressing everything and criticizing the handiwork of an amateur medic, stating that Yanqing could have suffered from sepsis due to the wounds not being cleaned properly.

Baiheng and Jingliu had come over later after ensuring that each other was okay. Baiheng had ordered food and was hell-bent on feeding Yanqing, saying that he had gotten so skinny in the week he was away. Jingliu, having read the report, was more than proud of her student especially his actions him severing the Wingguard's head.

After that mission, it would be another 6 months before Yanqing was sent out again. Dan Feng refuses to let Yanqing out of his sight and Yingxing and Jing Yuan agree, saying he is too young to be doing back-to-back missions like that. It totally has nothing to do with the fact that the week he was away was the most stressful week of their lives and how Yingxing was losing so much hair from the stress.

I might have gone a bit overboard with answering this but I was just so into it!

Some thoughts on Mazinkaiser! (2001)

I was expecting a fun time and I sure got one.

Mazinkaiser is short 7 episode mecha OVA animated by Brain's Base (Well known for their works on Getter Robo, Natsume's Book of Friends, "Durarara!!" and so on) that is an absolute love letter to Go Nagai's work, bringing an beautifully animated thrill ride of a series.

Mazinkaiser is just... a joy to watch. Its not too deep, its not too complicated, its just... koji kabuto gets his ass beat and then finds a robot with the power to become a god or a demon. While I do enjoy when my mecha delves into deeper themes using the big robot as a narrative device... its fun seeing when the robot is just a big robot and just a simple simbol of hope.

Mazinkaiser doesnt really go too deep on the idea of becoming a god or demon thing as much as Mazinger Zero, and it doesnt really have to honestly, but the theme is kinda present.

So in a runtime of arround 210 minutes (This is just a rough estimate assuming that every episode is 30 minutes long, most hover arround the 25-27 minute mark so that number is pretty off), how does it fare? pretty damm well

Its really enjoyable, kinda episodic in a way. It doesnt really shoot for a sequencial story like that of "Change! Getter Robo!" but there are elements that carry over from one episode to the next.

It is mostly a monster of the week type of deal which is neato!

Ya get to see this big hulking robot defeat things with increasing stakes with some jawdropping animation.

I know saying Brain's Base animations are fantastic has a similar energy to saying water is wet but god damm it, Water IS wet

Its a treat to the eyes

Fantastic use of color, particularly black. Using strong shadows while not shying away from beautifully vibrant reds.

Its all fantastic. Heres a small clip of it in action.

Another thing I have to give to Mazinkaiser is its great sense of scale on the robots.

The mechabeast are bigger than buildings, alot of damage is done to houses, hotels, towers and so on.

Mazinkaiser is often presented as this huge hulking beast of a robot and I LOVE IT! They give it great presence and an amazing silouhette that is often used to create some of the best shots of the OVA.

I might as well go ahead and talk about one of my favorite parts of the OVA while im at it... Mazinkaiser itself.

Absolutely striking design, Brain's Base did slight tweaks to its SRW F design in order to create this machine with a menacing presence, you can feel the power it has by the way it looks

and I feel the way its portrayed in the OVA itself is great! Working towards making it feel like an unbeatable beast in an exiting way that does not make the entire thing boring.

Lemme give a different example so you have an idea of what I mean.

Getter Robo. Most Getter OVAs portray the titular robot as a glass cannon that recieves mayor damage but can in turn dish out insane damage and that is very clearly seen in the multiple shots dedicated to the damaged robot. This often creates desperate scenes where the main characters have to fight in dire situacions as the machine is falling appart. This is quite engaging for the viewer as the result of the fights is often uncertain with this in mind.

Well Mazinkaiser goes ahead and showcases... a robot with no weaknesses

This in paper might create a boring experience where the viewer will always expect the invincible robot to win. Brain's Base had to walk a fine line of making the unbeatable robot beatable and unbeatable at the same time... yet they somehow did it... by not making the robot beatable

Koji being a human makes for some scenes where its not about the survival of the robot... but its pilot

and thats how they get the element of uncertainty and the exitement of the viewer.

The power of the robot is often too much to handle for him, the fact that a ship has to be inserted at the top of the machine to work leaves him vulnerable for prollonged periods of time, electric attacks get to the cockpit, Koji passes out in the damm robot like twice.

Koji being the only pilot for such a machine and him being so vulnerable adds stakes to everything and the OVA uses this idea to its fullest, presenting ordeals with Koji outside of Kaiser that are incredibly tense (the bike fight against the androids come to mind)

Sidenote: A smart choise that I apreciate is the fact that the only visible sign of mayor damage done to Kaiser is on the final battle. It makes the final beast even more threatening, setting the scene. "Oh god this thing can actually damage the robot, it even broke Koji's manual controls!"

I love it! its a great way to make the experience thrilling while not sacrificing the concept of a robot with no weaknesses

The story itself is not much to talk about. As I said, is as deep as Koji blowing up and getting a cool new robot. While it does have serious moments, its often lighthearted and hopeful with some great touches of comedy, mazinkaiser can be a really funny OVA some times... emphasis on sometimes, some jokes dont hit (Not a big fan of EP.4) but it has more hits than misses imo

Imo what trully makes the simple premise click is the characters.

Koji is such a fun guy to have as your protagonist, arrogant and passionate in the best way possible, very much inline with his other appearances in media.

Its an absolute joy seeing his chemistry with Boss and Sayaka! who are also an absolute joy here.

Boss, despite mostly being comic relief, is a great character! He is being a bit of an ass at times, you can genuinely tell he cares for his friends.

While yes I am not too happy about how much boss gets shit on at times... he does deserve it sometimes ngl and he does get a huge role in episode 6 which works as a bit of a redemption for him. (I absolutely love what they did with boss in ep.6)

Sayaka is a bit of the straightman of the group, keeping Kouji and Boss in check and giving them crap at times (for good reason most of the time).

Despite it, all that you can tell that she deeply cares for these two and wants to see them safe.

Confident and bold always wanting to help in battle, shes great

(also Its always fun seeing when Koji and Sayaka hang out as a couple, they are cute.)

The three have always had alot of chemistry together and Mazinkaiser does a good job with em

The background characters are also a joy! The scientists, Lori and Loru, Prof. Yumi, Mucha, Nuke, they are all great.

The whole thing goes to great lenghts to create a genuinely enjoyable cast of characters that are all brought to life by an incredible cast of voice actors

We have:

Hiroya Ishimaru who gave a great performance as Koji (This was his last role as the character and what a great way to go out on), Ai Uchikawa as Sayaka, Fumihiko Tachiki as Boss (Voice of Gendo Ikari from Evangelion), Haruko Kitahama and Hidekatsu Shibata as Baron Ashura and it goes on and on.

They all give a fantastic performance (ASHURA SPECIALLY LIKE GOD DAMM- THEY WENT OFF.

May you rest in peace Haruko)

Only complain here is that Tetsuya kinda just leaves for... most of the story which makes me sad, I wanted to see what they did with him but I understand how it would be hard to fit him in (specially without great mazinger)

Alright, lets move on to another aspect I quite enjoyed! The Soundtrack!

Kazuo Nobuta (Composer for Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo and New Getter Robo) and JAM Project made the soundtrack for this and they went above and beyond for this!

Creating a score that perfectly compliments every scene... they did it again god damm it.

I became an absolute fan of their work after Shin vs Neo and my god... Mazinkaiser is right next to Shin vs Neo in terms of score and mayor themes.

Lets start with the Opening and Ending themes and then move on to the score

"FIRE WARS" is a FANTASTIC opening theme

I absolutely love the small period of time JAM Project had were they were leaning hard into rock, it lead to some killer songs. Id say Fire Wars is the poster child of this period.

"TORNADO"... fantastic ending theme, starting with a fantastic piano, then hitting you with a sudden rise followed up by a beautiful acoustic guitar... and then it hits ya with the drums and violins that go along with the hopeful lyrics.

Even if the future is uncertain, even if the night is ever restless, there is reason to fight on. Fight for those that you love.

With bonds as strong as steel, we will fly again. Spirit as strong as a Tornado.

The entire thing is amazing and it feeds into Mazinkaiser being a symbol of hope, emphasing Koji's endless fight for everything he loves.

Fantastic

While this isnt an OP or Ending theme... Its still necesary to bring up:

"THEME OF MAZINKAISER"

HooHOOO... this song is used as the backdrop to some of the best fights. What a wonderful theme

Ichiro was KILLING it in the studio for this soundtrack!!

They killed it with the three mayor themes!

And it just keeps going with the score!

Take a listen!

You can easly hear Nobuta's style come through in all of the mayor compositions.

Distress, Passion, Hope.

Perfectly encapsulating the feelings of each scene... even the goofy ones!

Its a total treat to the ears!

I could keep going and going on some aspects I thoroughly enjoyed but I think you get the idea.

My only mayor problem with it is the Episode 4 in leaning too hard on beach tropes and... well the escape scene... eghhhh I dunno

Maybe Getter Robo conditioned me into expecting great hand to hand combat (especially New Getter) so seeing Koji just use Sayaka- eghhhh thats a no for me chief.

If you know you know.

Anyway.

Mazinkaiser is another hit by Brain's Base! Creating a fantastic action OVA that pays respect to its source (Mazinger Z) by mainting good character writting and by creating greatly choreographed mecha fights.

A thrilling ride that any fan of mecha has to check out!

Trully amazing! I don't regret checking it out one bit

Finally posting this from my drafts bc I need to talk about them.

Okay so I mentioned a lil about my view of Yingxing's family before so here are some of my headcanons for them

His mom:

Extremely kind and confident woman. Very sure of herself, when Yingxing thinks of a confident person to act like in order to start giving himself confidence again, that will eventually turn into his arrogant attitude, he thinks about what he remembers of his mom. She was a very cheeky woman and incredibly smart. Her field of expertise was astronomy, and she taught Yingxing all that she could about the stars. He always thought she seemed happiest when gazing into such a wide open sky, even if she never got a chance to travel much beyond their home.

To say Yingxing was closest to his mom out of all his family members would be an understatement, he truly was a mama's boy.

If Yingxing resembles anyone the most, it's his mom. His mom has long dark, navy-ish black hair, a mole underneath her left eye slightly right to what would be the exact middle, and deep blue eyes. Her hair was long, always either put up into a bun or into a braid. Her eyebrows were thick and dark, with a sharp arc at the end. Her face always gave away what she felt even if she tried to hide it, though she wasn’t typically the kind of person to conceal what she felt anyways. Just by the look of her face you could tell she was a bold woman, but any place for sharp edges on her face was instead rounded as if letting her softer side shine through and making her more approachable. Her eye shape was similar to Yingxing’s, a little less flat across the top, more of a faint curve towards the inner corner of her eye coming down to a point at the outer corner. She truly was beautiful, but her beauty was not merely in aesthetically pleasing features. Most of her beauty came from how bright and lively her face was, always alive with her emotions.

The very last gift she gave him, and the only object Yingxing still had from her was a very simplistic music box that played a lullaby she would sing to him. Over the years, he forgets the lyrics little by little, but he'll always remember the melody. Even as Blade, sometimes he can still remember some of the notes though he no longer knows where it came from.

She unfortunately was taken while trying to help Yingxing and his sister flee and later... well if you've read VotU you already know about the Mechabeast

His sister:

She was a very determined girl from what he remembers of her, more reserved than their mother but incredibly passionate about certain things. She always did her best to control her emotions, never wanted to lose herself to them fully other than the accidental overindulgence in her interests at times. But unfortunately that made her a lil prone to bottling stuff up and letting them out all at once later. She was also definitely an angry crier

When they had to flee from home she was 14 and Yingxing was either around or about to turn 9. So she was about 5 years older than him.

Her passion had been found in many things, but she seemed to want to study space travel. Most of it was inspired by the way their mother talked about the sky and how she wanted to be able to create her own ship and take them up into the stars. Eventually she also planned to use what she had begun learning to improve travel overall on their planet. (Their planet did have space travel, but space travel usually was expensive or just very big yknow? And on their planet there wasn't fast transportation between places)

After they had escaped with their mother's help, she did everything that she could for Yingxing. Tried her best to make sure to keep them both alive. Unfortunately, she didn't make it and she passed away with Yingxing at her side.

Her hair was lighter than Yingxing's and their mother's just by a little bit. And it had a slightly stronger teal/green-ish undertone compared to their more blue-ish undertones. She had a mole on the right side of her neck, one along the left side of her jaw, as well as two on her nose. Her eyes were more of a lighter sky blue. She had thicker brows like her mom, just slightly thinner and a bit lighter since she had still been young. She (unfortunately for her) inherited her mother’s overly expressive face and anything she tried to bottle up usually showed on her face for a while, more often than not they could see her with her brow furrowed for any number of reasons on most days. Her face was rounder, still fresh with a layer of baby fat covering her naturally rosy cheeks. The most charming feature on her face would probably have been her eyes, brilliantly blue and would seem to sparkle like the shining sea with excitement when something she was related to her interests.

His father:

Okay so, this man was a nerd and not as loud and expressive as his wife. Not in an “I’m shy” way, he was just a bit more reserved and stoic. However, you could get him to be rather loud and passionate if you poked him about one of his interests. He was a very interest driven man, the obsessive tendencies that Yingxing and his sister had come from their father who had many obsessive tendencies in his own right. However, rather than mechanical, he was more of a man invested in literature and history especially the history of other planets and the universe around them, all of the coexisting and overlapping events, the ascension of the Aeons, etc. He liked to research any things and he was a teacher actually.

Even with his more stoic nature, there was no doubt that he loved his wife and children so intensely.

Though he and his daughter tended to be closer, this man loved Yingxing immensely and didn’t show any kind of favoritism between them. Often when his wife was caught up with her own work/research, he would tell the two of historical tales of all kinds from all over the universe to get them to go to sleep. He had even told them legends of the Xianzhou Alliance and their illustrious Cloud Knights.

He unfortunately never got to say goodbye to either of his children before the Borisin army attacked and his wife

While I have less personality wise in mind for him, I do have a clearer picture in my head for how he looked. He has a few moles not on his face but on his body from his back to his neck to his legs as well as a few very faint freckles specifically on his nose. His eyes are a bright lavender purple, hidden behind thick framed rounded square glasses. His hair had already begun to gray a little bit early, but you can still see hints of his pale greenish hair, so he had a bit of a salt and pepper hair coloration but with a greenish instead. It was a very dull green though. His eyebrows were thinner, a soft curve leaving them to appear more flatly complimenting his wife’s arched brow. His eyes were faintly more downturned, but not too heavily. He was one who could more easily hide things on his face, but unfortunately his eyes would give him away at times. Similarly his eyes would almost seem to shine with the sparks of his excitement. His face was thinner, chin a bit sharper.

[minor spoilers for TOTK but also please don't give me *more* spoilers as I'm just starting this area of the game. not quite meta? but mosty just frustrated queer thoughts I guess.]

just started the Gerudo Town line (right after having done the Tarry Town one) and having been dealing with/reading a lot about TERF mentality and gender essentialism and cults lately. and it's, uh....... whoof.

(especially when you put the games side by side with the quote about link purposefully being created as gender-ambguous.)

like in botw there was the "man in woman's clothing to infiltrate the Sacred Woman Sanctuary" Joke™ that was..... yeah. followed by the "if you don't perform The Female Gender Correctly Enough to our rigid idea of feminity you're an evil man and must be thrown out into the wilderness"

like. that was shitty but also felt kinda par for the course for a multi million dollar company to throw in their game without any thought. you could make a joke about changing into Woman Clothes™™™ directly in front of the guards and strolling right on in and like. okay. also anyone else remember that goron that was supposed to be funny because he's a guy and the guards don't realize?

also just as a nonbinary person the excruciatingly strict "there is NO middle ground. you are a woman or you are an evil man." if you like. put on a piece of jewelry or even the motherfucking sacred helmet of Urbosa Herself even when the whole rest of you is still in the Vai clothing set. nope! fuck you you dirty man! get that creep out of here immediately!

and then. you walk into Tarrey Town in TOTK. and the main quest is in detail telling you how Gerudo children are forcefully removed from their families at like. five or whatever. to be taken Home to the City, regardless if mother, father, or child wants it to happen. it Will Happen and must be treated with the resigned sadness of inevitability and under no circumstances should be fought. their loving father will never see them again and they are forbidden from returning, or ever interacting with any Man from then-on until they have to go and 'make the next generation of girls' shall we say to continue the city.

there's a tiny girl in the bunker that is constantly calling for her mommy and daddy as she sleeps. and if you talk to the nearby adult? tldr "Foolish child, she will get used to it and stop asking silly things. She will learn we're all One Big Family here after all." (YIKES)

(her family DID come with her to the town. except her father was immediately thrown into a jail cell. meanwhile her mother was ostracized for Daring to make Man™ Clothing™™ and has been trapped outside the bunker, blockaded inside the Secret Shop on the surface surrounded by giant skeletal monsters none of the Gerudo can fight.)

and then you get to the effect this has on the kids raised in this city! you sit in on a class of full grown adult women and the one instructed to talk to you is literally so terrified by the sight of a Voe™ you are forced to wear a full-head MASK for her to even be able interact with you! what the fuck!

it's very "terfy cult utopia" vibes is what im saying, honestly.

there IS promise, that the city is apparently now oh so generously allowing a group of men ambassadors to stand at an entrance after years of building connections. and link gets to be the sole exception at the shelter (solely because he saved the entire region with the chief from the raging mechabeast and defeated The Motherfucking Calamity Itself) to the repeated exclamations of shock of everyone there. so narratively they seem to maybe be building up to a "hmm. maybe this is Not The Greatest Idea After All Everyone" but like. I think you can understand why my feelings right now are very. hm. "🙃"

I've been avoiding spoilers so far and HOPE this goes in a decent direction, but please forgive me for having Doubts about nintendo handling this with the best tact. or just, you know. not handling it at all. considering like. they don't have the best track record following up on narrative exposition and worldbuilding. 🫠

Based off Mr frosty the snowman's comment. Read below to decide if this is worth restarting the damn story line around Slugterra with magic and stuff.

“I’m going to start with a very simple question.”

His engine roared, motorbike speeding it’s way across the caverns, Trix scowling as they sped towards the twins. Dumber of the pair shouting back as they chased him.

“LODE!!”

She dragged the blade behind her. Red curled hair boiling back as she strode forward. Anger in her eyes as she strode towards the man, grey skin, body strengthened in the darkness. Burning red eyes meeting demonic yellow.

“Under who’s fucking orders-”

Speeding away, shouting back at his stupid brother. Blakk was gone. Their lives gone, Ma shot dead with whatever That was chasing behind, a strange mechabeast driving towards him. Black bodied helmet, leather clothes, a strange blaster that seemed to shoot slugs of metal and death. Arm bleeding as he continue to ride.

“STOP CHASING ME YA NUB!!!”

Yelping, loud shots ringing behind him, ducking his head as the woman oddly cursed in that weird easterner’s tongue.

Chinese. Something like that, cursing loudly as she sped past the Shane. This new program of Eli’s, it’d been trouble after trouble. Days spent coupled, protecting the caverns had clearly awakened something, turning the criminals into a police force that would have worked with the Shanes to keep the peace. Earn glory and gold through generally legal means. A mad pitch, but the first Shane to defeat several world ending disasters was something nobody could truly dare argue against.

And now? Well, she’d blown her way in, lightning crackling as she shot down an illegal dealing.

My head still ached from whatever impact that weird crystal that’d vanished into nothing she’d thrown to the floor. Revving engines, Eli calling behind me.

“GRA-”

“YEAH YEA-”

She’d managed to shout back, sparks of lightning erupting as whatever weapon she had. A ‘gun’ or pistol, or whatever it was. It didn’t use slugs, Beatrice didn’t hear most of what Eli had said, most of anything didn’t make sense. Sure, they’d saved the world over a period of years. And then a few months. But this had only been a day. Pounding against her skull, body pushing back before she could half hear something.

“OH FUCK ME.”

English. For the first time since she’d arrived, eyes growing wide. Strange woman’s robotised voice cutting through as she dropped the gun to her bike’s side. Popping a wheely, lightning sparking out of the vehicles engine as storm clouds gathered above.

“…”

And now she stood, frozen in place. Head turning to the massive expanse of black stone, the courtyard of the underground holding cell. The coupled up cave system in this small corner of Hell, court standing a few metres aside as she turned to the entrenched fort leader.

“What the HELL did you do?”

Bravado long gone. Birthright in her eyes, the man smirking, snarling as blood rain erupted over one half of the twin.

“What our kind has alway done.”

He replied. The woman shook her head. Releasing her anger, flames erupting at her fingers as she drew her blade back.

“And I’ve long explained that belief is what caused us to fall.”

Locke managed to force his brother to stop, woman loudly cursing as she gripped the encased stone item.

“JESUS FUCKING- OH SHUT THE FUCK- EMARCHINA- CUNT!!!”

And evidently. Whatever it was she tried to do, wasn’t working.

“GUYS…”

The stranger’s bike floated up, item cracking. Red shards expanding into what looked like a circle, my heart sank. Stomach swallowing as Locke stammered out.

“I- That-”

“GO HOME.”

Snarling through her teeth, glaring at the bandit as his thicker headed brother slapped his head.

“I TOLD YOU WE SHOULDN’T HAVE TAKEN THE JOB!”

“H- HEY!”

And then they turned, my head shifted back. I’d seen this only a few times, body tugged back. Letting out a gasp as he managed to mouth out an instruction. Not like I needed one, trees started to uproot themselves, thunder booming as an ancient voice roared out in… French??

Accent cutting through, cursing as flames erupted across and then…

'Undercover' Slugterra comic.

The first few weeks for Sarai going undercover at Blakk Industries were rough. Being away from her brother, Eli Shane, only to keep a safe profile was making her homesick and it doesn’t help that she’s known as a newbie.

So when Sarai overheard her mentor, Elyssa Moon, was managing the Shane gang’s infiltration, of course she wanted in (I could imagine she misses Eli and just wanted to see him).

Eli is aware on Sarai’s whereabouts at the time but never really acknowledged it. As much as Elyssa is irritated that her work shifts are back to back, she does tries her best to mentor Sarai. Now conflicted, Elyssa isn’t sure what to do if things go south, cause she has a clue on Sarai’s actions but isn’t quite sure why just yet. She can only for now, keep a close eye on her.

- Art trade with the marvellous @ariaterramoon!! Both Sarai and Saphira belongs to her too!! Now Im aware that Sarai’s job at the industries has to do with things outside the compound, but i guess you can take this as a soft-launch onto her permanent work placement since she is still new 😭

Anyways, hope y’all love this!! Sorry I couldnt do Trixie and Kord justice 😔 I haven’t done a comic in so long omg i was in the trenches.

Super Robot Rollcall - The Photon Power Lab Crew

Koji Kabuto

A young man who was burdened with enough power to become a god or a devil, Koji Kabuto is a cocky yet ultimately good-natured kid.

When the wicked Dr. Hell marched upon Japan with his army of ancient Mycenaean Mechabeasts, the tremors caused a cave in within Koji's grandpa's secret underground lab. With his final breath, he told Koji to wield the Mazinger Z's unmatched power to change the world...

After many tough encounters against Dr. Hell, his minions, and their Mechabeast Army, Koji and the Mazinger came out victorious... or so it seemed. From within the Earth, the Mycenaean Empire merely laid dormant, and awakened not too long after Koji's final battle with Dr. Hell, they were also intent on world domination.

Though Koji bravely fought them back even when clearly outmatched, he and the other members of the Photonic Power Labs crew only barely made it through thanks to the intervention of Tetsuya Tsurugi and his top-secret successor to the Mazinger, created by Koji's own (once assumed dead) father; the Great Mazinger.

Now, Koji, Tetsuya, and their respective teammates work together to thwart the ambitions of the heartless Mycenaeans.

High Melee, VERY high Defense, and a Potential skill that can reach even the max level 9. Koji is one hell of a defensive behemoth, and his Spirit Command learnset matches that. Not much else to add.

You can swap him (and all the other Mazinger pilots) around to other machines, but there's hardly much point in doing so when the side cast's machines are so bad. I suppose you could put Koji in the Great Mazinger in case you really really liked Grendizer vs Great Mazinger.

Fun Fact: Koji was originally to have a scarf, but Kamen Rider came out and became explosively popular around the time Mazinger would come out, and Nagai decided to cut it so as to not look like he was just riding the trend.

Mazinger Z

The sky-soaring fortress of steel that grants its pilot the power to become a god or a devil! The mechanical devil god itself! Mazinger Z!

Designed by Koji's grandfather, it both grants Koji the power to shape the world and burdens him with the tremendous task of controlling its power.

A mainstay of Super Robot Wars, with a nearly perfect track record.

High-ish Armor, decent HP. It's not unfitting for Koji, but it's hard to say it truly lives up to his stats. On the attacking front, it's decent as well, but has the usual issue that Mazinger has in a lot of games with Great and no Mazinkaiser; Great has better finishers on top of having the Great Booster, a one-use only finisher that serves as a proper nuke.

If only Mazinger got its own high damage one-use finishing move... Alas, that is but a dream. Unless...?

Sayaka Yumi

"Don't you know an angry girl is MUCH scarier than an angry guy? Huh? C'MERE!!"

Daughter of Professor Yumi of the Photonic Power Labs, pilot of the Aphrodite A and Diana A, and Koji's rival/love interest/comedic foil.

As she's rather short-tempered, Koji often picks on her by saying crazy misogynistic stuff. From how he acts around other women in the show, it seems like it really is just to pick on Sayaka. In any case, Sayaka rarely chooses to be the bigger man and instead beats the everliving shit out of Koji. Kids anime in the 70s was not here to give you healthy relationship role models, it was here to make you watch Koji and Sayaka throw furniture at each other, scratch and hit each other, and make the rest of the cast visibly worried.

This relationship might have been a bit more palatable if Sayaka ever got a single W against a mechabeast, but she's below Boss in that regard. Still, she does get her own mini-arc later in the series where Koji apologizes to her for a lot of his past deeds, which is surprisingly nice for a show of its age. She still continues to job afterwards.

In SRW, Toei Koji and Toei Sayaka's love-hate dynamic is usually very toned down if at all present, which is an understandable approach, even if it makes her less distinct than other versions of Sayaka.

No way around it, Sayaka is terrible. Awful stats and absolutely nothing good for her to pilot. That's right, you can't even fix her by shoving her in the Mazinger or the Great, because if her other stats are terrible, her Melee is ABYSMAL.

At level 40 she does learn one of the best support Spirit Commands in the game, but that'll be a LONG while of dragging Diana A around the battlefield to Repair to slowly crank up those levels.

Diana A

After the Aphrodite A gets destroyed by Harpia π7, Diana A rises from the ashes! Even Koji, who once advocated for phasing out Aphrodite A altogether, ended up being in support of the Diana A's construction after seeing how hurt Sayaka was to lose Aphrodite.

Born from Sayaka's determination to keep on fighting, Diana A will never die! (but it WILL endlessly job)

Decent Armor, but pathetically low HP makes Diana hardly fit for even its Repairbot role. As a Super (even if only nominally), it also has no Mobility to speak of. To make matters worse, it's got a Movement Range of 5.

If it has any upsides, it's that it's a version of Diana A that actually has its Ranged-attribute attack be its strongest move, to go with Sayaka's higher Ranged stat (even if it's technically only tied with the Melee-attribute Scarlet Beam).

Even the Methuss is a better pick. Don't bother unless the Diana A episode moved you so much it made you cry. Which i wouldn't judge you for. It's rather earnest and truly makes you feel for Sayaka's pl- huh? N-no, i didn't cry at it. Shut up.

Boss

Delinquent with a heart of gold, Boss is the mysteriously-named gang leader in Koji's town. Though initially they fought over Sayaka's affections, they would eventually become closer than even brothers.

Between the line quoted above, Boss' constant dreams about being saved from the clutches of the heartless Tetsuya by Koji in Great Mazinger, and following Koji to bumfuck nowhere, Japan, to fight literal aliens in Grendizer, Toei Boss is likely the incarnation of Boss that is most fanatically dedicated to Koji.

He's often followed by his two incompetent lackeys, Nuke and Mucha, but most SRW games featuring Toei Mazinger cut them for one reason or another.

Statwise, Boss is... alright, all things considered. He's completely outclassed by Koji and Tetsuya both, but he's still a few degrees of magnitude better than Sayaka.

Of note though is that his Spirit learnset is very underwhelming. He starts out with Daunt, letting him lower enemies' morale and helping with boss slaying, but other than that, he doesn't get much of interest.

Not really much of a point to using him, unless you hate Tetsuya for some reason like i do but still want the Mazinger combo moves.

Boss Borot

Dan-da-daaaan!!! Lovable lug and friend to children all over the world, the Boss Borot is here! It's made out of scrap, it's a miracle it even moves, it's falling apart at every seam, and yet it somehow jobs less than any of the girl robots. Thanks, 70s Toei!

Well, you can't complain much because the Borot is such a perfect design.

Originally designed by the (then) trio of brilliant scientists from the Photonic Labs, who were kidnapped coerced convinced to make this thing at Boss and Sayaka's request. Since they made it in secrecy in a dumpster, this is the best they could come up with.

Boss is always coming up with convoluted plans to make the Borot fly... it rarely works.

It's bad, even for Borot standards. 5 movement, Boss has no sub-pilots, all of its moves are 1-range, until it gets upgraded with a 1-3 range move (which is also its only option to attack flying foes). It doesn't even have high HP to make use of Boss' Self-Destruct Command and its Repair Cost of 10.

Making matters even worse, it is completely outclassed by later Resupply machines. Diana A might be outclassed by the Methuss in terms of Repairing, but at the end of the day they're both pretty meh. You get actually decent Resupply-capable machines in this game.

Do not bother.

Fun Fact: In Mazinger Z VS The Great General of Darkness, Boss Borot is the only Photonic Power Labs machine to successfully down a Battlebeast... though it did destroy itself in the process.

Also, sometimes this thing is fucking sentient. Eva-01, eat your heart out.
