Some gunplay bookends this poetic western, but in-between it is a touching exploration of characters and relationships. Peter Fonda only directed three films and this is by far the best. He also does a good job playing the lead alongside the equally excellent Warren Oates as his long-time friend, and Verna Bloom as the wife he deserted but is trying to return to. Cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond shot McCabe & Mrs. Miller the same year and though not quite at the same level this has the same elegiac feel and is well worth tracking down.
