One week following the Royal Menagerie

The weather had shifted early that evening to Quicklevin, bringing with it a surge of aether. While none of the Scion Dominants were Thunder-aspected, the extra ambient aether in the air immediately started to work wonders for their current situation. Sebastian was able to slip into an actual healing sleep, while Reinhardt and Augustine found that they could actually stomach solid food. Mathye had elected to follow Sebastian's example for a nap, while Riven had felt strong enough to risk going outside. Zoissette joined her, and out in the open air, the younger Dominant felt her wits slowly come together.

Well, together enough to venture something that had been on her mind...

"Curious. You said it felt like you broke through something?" Zoissette asked. Riven nodded, extending out a hand to catch the stray sparks of levin-aether against her palm.

"I don't...have any other way to describe it." She said. "I know from school that there is a barrier to keep the air we breathe and the other cycles of nature separate from what's up there. I know of the aetherical currents. But this...this was different."

"Describe it." Zoissette ordered, adjusting her glasses. Riven frowned. How could she put into words what she and Valefor had sensed, all the way up there? Or what they'd possibly seen?

"Imagine...the thickest, heaviest blanket you can think of." She began. "How it would feel on your person, against your skin. Now picture just...fighting against that blanket, moving in it--through it. That's what it felt to me. Like I was fighting my way free of a thick blanket made of pure aether." Zoissette hummed, crossing her arms as Riven continued.

"And when I broke free and got up there..." The younger Dominant trailed off. "It was silent. Quiet. And there were so many stars..." Riven closed her eyes, remembering. The darkness around her, the curvature of the planet below. The beautiful shimmering blue of the sky she'd just broken free from, the stars twinkling like diamonds, so many diamonds, as far as her eye could see...

"...For a brief moment, I swore I saw aether wrapped around the planet. Not in the form of the currents, but something else." Riven opened her eyes, watching as sparks flared briefly against her skin. "That same blanket, like how you'd put a cover over something. Only...it was covering the world beneath me." Zoissette tilted her head, her eyes darting back and forth as she thought. She shifted position, tucking a hand under her chin.

"A shield." She breathed. Riven nodded. "A shield of aether...around the planet? I've never heard of such a thing!"

"You see why I told you. I honestly don't know if I'd taken a hard crack to the head from Zenos and it was making me see things."

"You weren't." Zoissette said gently--but firmly. "Valefor has sharp senses for aether, sharper than most. If you and her picked up on something, it exists." Now it was the elezen's turn to pause, mulling over what she'd just been told.

"A shield of aether, separate from the currents." She mused aloud. "Mayhap something created by Hydaelyn, for extra protection against Zodiark?"

"That was my thought, but then we've had to deal with surges of Zodiark's power before. If this shield was supposed to be some type of protection against that, it failed." Riven answered.

"True, true. This is something worth looking into."

As the stag rested his arms against the windowsill in one of the more barren hallways, leaned over to tentatively observe the raindrops trickle down the stained glass, it became apparent that today was one of such days. He wasn't as upbeat as one would usually find him. He wouldn't be able to tell you why that was.

The weather, mayhaps?

His voice echoed through the dark, empty hallway. A solemn tune. Slow. Fitting of whatever mood had taken hold of his body.

neuvi & beisht-

she feels very protective over him & will defend him by any means if necessary. there's more to this bond than him simply being the hydro sovereign: they're kin, however distant it may be. neither of them have much of that left in the world, so you can be sure she will cling to what she has and ensure she doesn't lose him, too. let this be a warning to anyone who has ideas on harming the iudex: he has a giant three-headed dragon-serpent guard dog. and she bites.

she bullies him into underwater races whenever she can. whilst she accepts that he (currently) has his place amongst humanity, she is reluctant to let him lose touch with his draconic blood, and will drag him by his hair into the sea if she has to.

the steambird routinely prints stories full of rumours regarding the "lady li yangxing" and the chief justice. beisht finds these hilarious and definitely keeps copies of them. she even plays up to them occasionally (especially if she spies a certain reporter lurking nearby), insisting on walking arm-in-arm with him or gracing him with gifts in public. she's a menace.

she can sense when he's saddened or troubled. hear me out: we know water carries emotion and memory, that's established fact, and with beisht being a (lesser) hydro dragon & an empath, it makes sense that she, too, can feel that emotion and memory in water. add to that a bond between hydro dragon kin & she becomes gradually attuned to his particular signature. it's probably weaker the further from fontaine (and its more concentrated hydro resonance), but she just gets this feeling that something is bothering him - and, mayhaps, she schedules a trip to make sure.

neuvi & vautrin-

neuvi earned vautrin's loyalty very early on, and it was all to do with the melusines. perhaps he caught the typically stoic iudex softening when interacting with a melusine (perhaps it was even carole) & seeing that side of him triggered a bittersweet memory in vautrin's mind. the evident care and affection neuvi displayed for the melusines reminded him of how he adored his little sister. anyone who could care so strongly for such kind, innocent beings clearly had a good heart, and therefore deserved his unyielding loyalty.

though at first he found neuvi hard to read, vautrin eventually learns the subtleties in neuvi's expressions or tone of voice & is able to understand his thoughts and feelings more than others who work alongside him. whilst others might see his stoicism as him being cold / detached, vautrin knows better.

following from that, he absolutely finds subtle ways of explaining human behaviour to neuvi when he thinks the iudex is confused about something. vautrin is aware neuvi isn't an ordinary human (though he doesn't care what he is) & so he does what he can to help him assimilate more smoothly into society. (i also think vautrin would help teach him things if neuvi ever asked-)

and now for the big one.... vautrin was absolutely in love with neuvi, but he was also In Denial about it. even if he wasn't, he would never have done anything about it (unless invited to, which he believes is an impossibility). romance was never at the forefront of his mind: still so shaken by the loss of his sister so young, he threw himself into work and closed off his heart to any kind of relationships, romantic or otherwise. carole managed to worm her way in first; then neuvi. carole's death & the fallout that followed closed him off again for a time. vautrin never really accepted his feelings himself until long after he was sent to the Fortress*

hihi I do indeed! I’ll stick my thoughts beneath a readmore for ease of skippability and also for spoilers:

leif ≠ leif. like is’s less “leif was resurrected and came back complicatedly different” and more “leif super dies in snakemouth and leif as we know him is the cordyceps”. I mean they aren’t as mutually exclusive as I may be presenting them as but idk! I like leaning into how weird leif’s whole deal is. let him wrestle with legacy let him wrestle with his borrowed yet vividly personal memories and feelings let him grieve leif and muse and elizant I and continue to live. let him be a weird not-quite moth

a bit along the same lines, leif having health issues as consequence of leif stuff. wounds that don’t quite heal right (thinking his injury in ch4 is a big one), some form of vision impairment, and poor dexterity are the main ones I’ve got in mind and that last one is maybe a little bit of projection as a treat

leif being a fantastic actor is already canon but I would like to extend that off stage. I think he’a scarily good at putting on fronts acting however he would like to present himself. I think his facades even fool himself sometimes

vi being raised as a potential successor to the queen when she was young before getting a bit older and being moved to the honey factory and ultimately striking out on her own is maybe not canon compliant but I think it’s potentially very interesting and funny. could’ve been a princess but she chose violence.

vi being wholly able to fly the entire game but not even bothering to until the end when she is directly ordered to do so by the queen is so funny I don’t think there’s some deep rooted psychological reason for that I think she’s just like that. maybe one day down the line she’ll appreciate the oddly elusive gift of flight for what it is but as of now she just walks everywhere since bugaria’s built to be accessible to flightless bugs so why not y’know! she just likes to walk! maybe she has really good lower body strength for a bee as consequence

kabbu’s a theatre enjoyer! he can be too enthusiastic sometimes (he’s not always great at volume control) and he’s seen enough plays that he knows what makes a play good and bad and he’s not a good liar if asked about it, but he’s a well-liked regular at his local theatres. he’s occasionally mistaken for an aspiring actor himself with his passion and his boisterously earnest nature but no, his heart lies elsewhere. he just really likes the theatre

kabbu gets shy about it but he’s a really good singer too. mothiva will never know

chompy’s favorite bug is leif (of course, likewise leif spends the most time with chompy and talks to/about her often, although he kinda spoils her and she usually goes to him for sympathy whether earned or otherwise). she considers vi a playmate/rival much to vi’s chagrin. she sees kabbu as a firmer authority she can’t weasel past, but finds his approval all the more special, and often accompanies him/comforts him on his worse days whatever the reason may be.

chompy thinks todd (leif’s turbo nephew) is another chomper.

postcanon neolith fluent in roach

zasp and mothiva childhood friends mayhaps

more of a worldbuilding headcanon (because bug fables’ worldbuilding is a little bit flimsy for my tastes cough cough) but I think the bugs that exist outside of the strict “species = kingdom” is fun to consider. like moths being more nomadic and individualized, and it’s families and their descendants that align themselves with the kingdoms rather than a whole flutter of them. maybe it’s more common to see lone unassociated beetles than bees, for example. idk if I were braver about bugs I’d be attributing those traits more I like it when creatures are creatures with creature traits :] bug enthusiasts who attribute those traits for me are my heroes

also I know it’s a common headcanon but bug fables and hollow knight existing in the same universe is really fun. I don’t think they’re all that close to each other spacially or tonally but thematically and for the antics!! idk. maybe quirrel shows up on his precanon travels and warns about the folly of eternity and the numerous bugs devoting their lives in some way or form to finding the everlasting sapling just kinda. politely nods along vehemently disagreeing

Okay okay, for real I do think it would be fitting Sampo has a similar end like the mythical item, Sampo. To be lost at sea after giving countless treasures to others after people decided to be selfish and claim it (him) for their own.

Or if it's my writing and not the game, I think it would be a fitting end where he still continues his schemes and cons but still being this strange moral Robin Hood-esque thief. The Masked Fools and Aha loosen or have no hold on him and he gets to live a carefree life.

Mayhaps with a certain Silvermane Captain? 👀

But that's just me. Still want him dead though :p

Yearly Toppers

Looking back at the data from 3 years, I wanted to honor and reflect on the top 3 fics from each year (2020, 2021, and 2022)! A note for 2022: I am highlighting the fics with the most notes at the current moment. I have fics that I’ve not posted yet and older fics will have an edge up on newer fics simply because of how time works.

2020

Safety (Namjoon x Reader)

Summery: You can’t lie to your soulmate. It was a fact that many people knew, including you. You just didn’t expect to find your soulmate during your night shift at the MSN book store you work at. You also didn’t expect them to be the Kim Namjoon, an up-and-coming star.

Angst, Fluff

I think something that struck me about this fic is it was my first time writing a soulmate au. I really enjoyed it and found the story something that I easily fell into. Just as I hope readers were, I found myself rooting for the reader in the climax and anxious with them as the show started! I’ve been meaning to write another soulmate au but I’ve simply not had time yet. Mayhaps next year I will try to!

Midnight Musings (Jungkook x Reader)

Summery: You just moved to Korea for a teaching job and on your first night, you decided to visit a local cafe. You even took a photo to commemorate the move! That photo actually lead to something very unexpected happening though.

Fluff, smut, a touch of angst

One of my first smuts! 2020 was truly a year of exploration for me! I think it was my first year trying mxm and branching out into got7 fics! I must admit, I don’t think I will write smut much more because though I am sex indifferent, the idea of sex really... I don’t enjoy it. It just sort of is something. I laughed all while writing this fic and my other smut. It was a fun experience and I greatly admire all smut writers but it isn’t something for me as a hobby writer.

Slow Mornings (Jungkook x reader)

Summery: You decide to make Jungkook breakfast in bed.

Honestly. I was shocked by this looking back. I don’t often think of drabbles as stuff that really leads to much but please don’t underestimate the power of drabbles for getting eyes on your blog! It was a fun and short fic and I think it makes me want to get back into doing some drabbles! I’ve been thinking of how I want to start of 2023 and playing around with the idea of a drabble series. Maybe... if you all have drabble requests, I could take those instead!

2020 was truly a year of exploration for me. I had a lot of fun with all the stuff I wrote! It is quite fun to look back and see what range of stuff I did! Interestingly, the notes on these fics haven’t changed tons since I took note of them in 2020 but that’s ok. These stories hold a special place in my heart. Especially safety!

Taking it Slow (Namjoon x Reader)

I had a lot of fun writing this piece. I started as half a page free write. Then I made it the length of a full page. Then I wrote it up on a google document and tried to double its length once again. I enjoyed it a ton and writing this piece made me feel quite calm! It was an attempt of mine to spark some creativity and while I found some creativity with writing this piece, I didn’t find much that carried over.

A Spark in the Commons (Yugyeom x Reader)

Summery: You help an anxious deer shifter in the shifter union commons and a friendship buds.

This might’ve been one of my first posted Got7 fics! What are my thoughts on it... 1) I am happy I started writing Got7! I really love them a ton and I am glad that I finally branched out again! I had leaned into BTS after starting to write for Seventeen. 7 is much less than 13 and only recently have I started branching out again! 2) I am... not the biggest fan of this fic. I’ve been open about my struggles with writing in 2021 so it isn’t personal to the event or anything like that... but I was using events to push me to write and while I am glad I wrote this and glad people enjoy it, I do not have a strong bond to it.

Drawing Blood (Taehyung x Reader)

Summary: An attempt to get over a two year crush on your friend (and a suspected vampire) leads to interesting discoveries.

I uh... remember making the graphic more than I remember writing this fic. TO BE FAIR! I WROTE 24 FICS IN 2021. TO NOT REMEMBER A FEW HAPPENS (plus I think because it was posted on sssc, I didn’t get the notifications of interest and thus had to check it rather than seeing it on my notif bar). That being said, I did have some fun writing this fic and when I look back, I am really curious about the world I was writing in. I think if I could go back and do this fic again, I would. I’d expand on it and add another plot that really highlighted the vampirism rather than just had it be a characteristic. It is 3.8k afterall. I wonder what more depth I could add to it if it became 8k! This fic was a gift for a dear friend of mine, @voiceswithoutlips. Potentially it could be something that I further expand on with Kas’s help!

A year of distance between me and 2021, I still don’t fully know how I feel about the year. There are stuff that I do hold dearly, but I really do think I was nearing or at burnout. I was tired and fried and I think it shows in my writing some. I wasn’t fried for the whole time but I was for a while. I think as well... I hold a lot of guilt for the year. As mentioned a few times on my blog, part of why I took time off from school early 2021 was because of a surgery and mental health struggles... last time I had a major surgery though, my writing surged forth like a protective barrier and this time... it got hurt with me. Again, I had fun and I look back on some of my stuff fondly but I also look back at stuff and wonder “when did I write this??” and I see the hurt and scared person I was. I see how I was struggling to cope and wishing desperately that my writing would be a safe space for me again while somewhere in me, I knew it wasn’t.

2022

Heated Blanket (Jungkook x Reader)

Summery: After finals, you choose to take a nap. Your favorite heated blanket comes to join you.

I posted this fic before I really started changing my writing habits... or at the very least, I wrote it before that happened. It was hard to write this fic on many layers. I was low motivation and energy, I was recovering from the first inflammation of my nerves, and I was battling the feeling of needing to do more. This fic was a gift to a good friend of mine ( @ditttiii) and I am really glad I managed to write something for her! It’s a fun little drabble!

A Story From a Different Time (Taehyung x Reader)

Summery: Love. Love is such a wonder. Your love story is especially wondrous to your grandkids who love love as much as you and hang on to every word as you relive the time in your life as a teacher when you met a soft hearted tattoo artist.

Fluff, hint of angst

This fic was a year in the making! I started it sometime last year (maybe October? Or early November?) and had some bones of it created. That being said, I wasn’t happy with it. Throughout this year, I’ve worked on it bit by bit and tried hard to get it out in time for @taegularities birthday! Seeing it already able to make it to the top three was a shock because it’s only been a month or so (then again, most of my fics this year get like 10 notes or less so...). I am fairly happy with the writing process and how this fic came about! It’s full of tons of references and nods to Rid and I also got to write a fic that passes the Bechdel test this year (if you’ve not heard of it, essentially to pass it you need a woman talking to another woman about something other than a guy)! Having fics that pass the Bechdel test when I have women in my story is something I want to do more of (similarly, I want more representation of disabilities, sexuality, and of people all around the gender... cloud? I know spectrum is commonly used but like... it’s not really a spectrum so idk what to call it otherwise).

Let You Fly (Jimin x Namjoon)

Summery: Namjoon and Jimin have been together for only 7 months and it’s been near perfect. The two fit together wonderfully. All changes when Namjoon’s dream job offer slides itself into his inbox. He’d been eyeing the position in Japan for years… It wouldn’t be fair to Jimin to pack up his bags and join Namjoon, but it wouldn’t be fair to Namjoon to try to force him to stay. Instead, Jimin must let him fly.

Angst, hint of fluff

THIS FIC! I AM SO HAPPY THAT THIS FIC IS ONE ON THIS LIST! It’s based off of a song (Seven Months by Sunshine State) and I had so much fun writing this fic. This was written shortly after I realized something must change. I was very intentionally working on trying different things and I feel like it really paid off for this fic. I got immersed in it, made a playlist, made a graphic for it, did character interviews, and tried doing a teaser. Most of it’s notes came from BWC’s bookclub and honestly, I am so content with that because it came with people giving me their thoughts on it. It’s a brainchild of mine and I am so honored to have people share their thoughts on it and to have people read it!

It’s not lost on me that all the fics that are on my top 3 for 2022 are ones that were gifts or bookclub fics. Why do I think this is? Well... a multitude of reasons. 1) I posted half as much as I had in 2021 and 2020 (24 and 28 respectively in comparison to the 14 I posted this year). And almost half of what I posted (6 fics) were for my series A Fae’s Brew to Take You Away. Something I started 3/4 years ago and let collect cobwebs for two of those years. It gets less than 10 notes and half of the notes are just nets rebloging. Please know, I am ok with that. I am not complaining. I just want to finish this series. 2) Aside from ASFDT and Heated Blanket, all I wrote was MxM which doesn’t do well on tumblr. 3) I post infrequently. 14 fics is roughly 1 every month. I know I didn’t post that regularly though. And on tumblr, there’s an expectation to churn from readers. It’s social media. You’re rewarded for more posting. 4) I don’t get a lot of traction to my blog. I sit contently at 750 some followers and many of my fics don’t reach the top page (or if they do it’s only for a short time).

That being said, keeping in mind the few notes and the traction being from other writers reblogging, I am really happy with the stuff that I’ve posted. I finished writing AFBTTYA so hopefully I will be able to edit and get to a point where I am posting something from it every month all next year! In the past few months, the amount I am writing has increased. I am feeling creative with what I am writing! I think that this devopment may take a bit of time to shine through on my blog because with series, I am trying to finish it before I start posting. I am trying to widdle away my 30+ wip list. I am still in school. I still have nerve inflammation. But I think this year has been a year of me trying to better my relationship with my writing. It will take time and I still struggle (just yesterday, after writing 3.5k the day prior, I got anxious about not writing that much again) but I am learning better coping strategies. In some ways, the low notes help because I can really work to untangle my love of writing and want to post from those notes which will hopefully help me keep that boundary if I get higher notes.

I think I am going into 2023 excited for my writing. It’s refreshing.

There's the foreign sensation of something scratching against his insides, against his rib cage and collarbone. And where before it was a fleeting, seldom occasion, it's now grown more frequent, sometimes overbearing in its intensity that it steals the Phoenix's breath. He feels as though the shard sealed within him is trying to claw its way out by force.

Yet it's never been so agonizing that he jolts awake in the middle of the night. A gasp escapes him as he sits up and doubles over, hands clutching at his chest uselessly. Yet, even through the pain, he wonders ━ if Ultima is trying once more to claim Clive as their vessel right this instance, if that is why they struggle so fierce against the prison that Joshua has made of his body. Just what ━

A hand on his shoulder draws him from his thoughts. Ah. Of course. Jote, ever a steadying presence. She'd not simply sleep through this, attentive as he is. Joshua lifts his head only enough to be able to look at her. He sees her lips moving, knows that she is trying to talk to him, but... What is she saying? He can't hear her... Yet he doesn't struggle when her fingers wraps around his wrists, gently guiding his hands to his sides so that she can inspect his chest ━ the deformity embedded in its mid. There's a crease in Jote's eyebrows, the displeasure and worry edged so plainly on her features ere she reaches to the side. Presumably procuring any medication and ointment they have on hand currently, as limited as they are while traveling. Joshua swallows, shifting his focus on calming his breathe, reigning his emotions in so that his powers may mend the seal and his body. When Jote presses a cloth against his chest, he grows vaguely aware of the blood that must be trickling from the purple mass. How odd. But his knight's soft command has him remain still instead of trying to have a look for himself.

━ Would that she didn't have to dirty her hands like this.

"Thank you, Jote," the Phoenix finally murmurs after a few minutes have passed, raising his hands to grasps both of hers gently. He should be stronger than this. Needs to be stronger than this. "Forgive me. For making you worry so."
