Clockwork Orange letter, signed by Robert Fraser, 1967-68
This item was up for auction at Christie's in 2014. Robert Fraser signed as Strawberry "Bob", which was Keith Richards' nickname for him, apparently due to his penchant for pink suits.
Tumblr media
Christie's Description: "A rare signed petition protesting against the selection of David Hemmings over Mick Jagger for the lead role of Alex in A Clockwork Orange, circa 1967-1968, the five line typescript document on black bordered mourning paper addressed to screenwriter Terry Southern, telling him: We, The Undersigned, Do Hereby Protest With Extreme Vehemence As Well As Shattered Illusions (in You) The Preference Of Devid Hemmings Above ***** Mick Jagger ***** In The Role Of Alex In 'The Clockwork Orange, the document signed in black felt pen at the foot by Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr, the four Beatles' signatures above that of Anita Pallenberg, signed as Anita ("the heater") [Pallenberg's signature in ballpoint pen faded] and close to Donald Cammell's signature Don the Drom and his caricature of a camel; fourteen other signatures on the document include: Peter Blake, Jann Blake, Marianne Faithfull, James Fox, Robert Fraser who inscribed a comment HEAR! HEAR! and signed as Strawberry "Bob", David Cammell, Sandy Lieberson and Christian Marquard, 1p. -- 13x7in. (33x17.9cm.)"
Christie's Essay: "According to screenwriter Terry Southern it was photographer Michael Cooper who first interested him in Anthony Burgess' futuristic novel A Clockwork Orange. It was also Cooper who was behind the petition in this lot. Southern said ...Michael turned me onto 'A Clockwork Orange' and so I took an option on the book and was going to write a screenplay. Then David Hemmings came out with 'Blow Up' and the agency said "We'll package this thing with David Hemmings because he's hot". Michael [Cooper] just freaked out and said "Mick Jagger has got to play this part". He drew up a letter edged in black which said: "We the undersigned hereby insist that Mick Jagger play the part". It was signed by all the Beatles, Marianne Faithfull and Robert Fraser...
Terry Southern's screenplay adaptation of Burgess' novel was rejected by the British Board of Film Censors in May 1967, the board declared that: ..any film of this script would not be shown in Britain.. It was at this point that Paramount, the studio backing Southern pulled out, and Southern gave the book to Kubrick who just put [the book] to one side and forgot about it for a year and a half....
Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones' manager in the mid-sixties, was also keen to make a film of Burgess' book with the Stones playing the violent quartet led by the hero Alex, who was to be played by Mick Jagger. In his book The Stanley Kubrick Companion, author James Howard records that at one point, Andy Warhol and David Bailey co-owned the screen rights to the book [presumably Warhol and Bailey's interest in it post-dated that of Paramount and Southern], and had wanted to use the Rolling Stones.... a project which folded when the group reportedly 'demanded exhorbitant fees' and the rights were subsequently allowed to lapse. Stanley Kubrick, who had been given a copy of the book by Terry Southern during the filming of 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1967, eventually took the project on, but was put off by...the reputation of decadence that Jagger already carried...and opted instead for Malcolm McDowell whose dynamic acting debut in Lindsay Anderson's 1968 film If... had impressed him.
The inclusion of so many names on this petition also associated with the film Performance suggest that its date is closer to 1968 when work first began on the film. Donald Cammell directed Performance with Nicolas Roeg and is also credited as the screenwriter. James Fox played one of the leading roles - Chas Devlin, and Anita Pallenberg played Pherber. Sandy Lieberson is credited as the film's producer. A number of those who have signed the document are also linked with another momentous artistic production of the late 1960s, The Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band released in 1967. The Beatles' and Stones' mutual friend, art gallery owner Robert Fraser signed the petition, as did Peter Blake, designer of the ground-breaking Sgt. Pepper album cover, who was introduced to Epstein and EMI by Fraser. Photographer Michael Cooper, who apparently devised the petition, also shot the Sgt. Pepper album cover."
Terry Southern, Michael Cooper, and many of the other signers were good friends of Fraser.

[A photo is posted of a great splashing in the water. It looks like one of the hippos attempted to wander closer to where the group of dinosaur-islands was grazing and ended up drawing the ire of something even more capable of throwing its weight around than it is. The long-necked dinosaur can be clearly seen now - half-raised out of the water and comprised entirely wood and vine - as it lunges after the now-retreating hippo.]
Leaving them alone for a minute.
I got the results back on the material coating some of the... decorative corpses at the mission village: It’s calcite, but not a readily identifiable variety of it.
And as can probably be expected, there are traces of Filth interlaced with the structure. Not enough to be infectious on its own but notable.
I’m not sure how much that really tells me about anything beyond
...Hm. The bishop’s body would have been difficult to move in that condition without breaking, so they presumably couldn’t have carried it that far from where the calcite was applied. A cave system near the mission then? And if there’s a larger Filth source in the area to infect the stone (water?), that could be Marquard’s interest as well.
Need to ask the missionaries when I get back after sorting this out.

Petroleum-Fuel Dyes and Markers Market by Size, Share, Demand & Trends by 2032
The global petroleum fuel dyes and markers market is expected to witness a steady growth rate by registering a CAGR of 4.8% during the projection period from 2022 to 2032. The global market is projected to be valued at US$ 445.60 Mn in 2022 and is anticipated to reach around US$ 712.1 Mn by 2032. The rising production of petroleum and petroleum-based products is predicted to bolster the consumption of petroleum-fuel dyes and markers over the assessment period.
According to the historical projection of the global petroleum-fuel dyes and markers market, the CAGR registered was about 4.2% between 2012 and 2021. Owing to the surging growth of end-use industries such as refineries and increasing usage and consumption of petroleum/fuel products, such as gasoline generators in various developed and developing countries, the global petroleum-fuel dyes and markers market is poised to grow at a 4.8% CAGR between 2022 and 2032.
Leading oil and gas companies are continuously searching for measures that can assist them to stop the smuggling of crude oil. In order to keep an eye out, specific dyes and markers are used. These solutions help prominent oil and gas companies to categorize the products on the basis of functionalities, and properties such as ignition temperature, boiling point,. Therefore, rising incidents of fuel theft all over the world along with the surging need to identify different grades of fuels are anticipated to augment the growth of the fuel-dyes and markers market during the assessment period.

Key Takeaways
Strict     gasoline pricing and taxation systems help in preventing mismanagement     that occurred during the trading of numerous gasoline and diesel grades.     Various rates of tax on leaded and unleaded gasoline grades are fully     charged at different levels and further, they are promoted to replace     unleaded with leaded gasoline. Whereas, from the technical means, colored     dyes are used to distinguish leaded and unleaded grades and brands and to     restrict mismanagement.
Most     countries are opting for fuel additives or petroleum/ fuel dyes as it is a     more preferred and convenient way to restrict the mismanagement of various     gasoline brands. In order to switch manufacturing of unleaded gasoline,     key players in the market are presently offering incentives for refineries     which is also known as the introduction of an environmental tax imposed on     the import.
According     to the U.S., numerous state governments have made it mandatory to use dyes     and markers for off-road diesel which is non-taxed in order to prevent its     laundering in the on-road diesel sector, specifically over the border     areas of the states.
Stringent     regulations help in differentiating various grades of different fuels     which are expected to drive the petroleum-fuel dyes and markers market and     the trend is likely to continue during the forecast period. Different     colors of dyes are used for coloring gasoline, lubricating oils,. and each     of these colors has a different purpose.
Competitive Landscape
Prominent market players in the petroleum-fuel dyes and markers market are concentrating on partnering with end users and entering into long-term supply agreements. Such leading key players in the market are focusing on investing in research and development for developing new products and introducing more sustainable products to minimize the carbon footprint.
Key Companies Profiled IN Petroleum-Fuel Dyes and Markers Market are Johnson Matthey (Tracerco), The Dow Chemical Company, BASF SE, SGS SA, Innospec, Marquard & Bahls, Pylam Products Company, Inc., John Hogg Technical Solutions, SBZ Corporation, United Color Manufacturing, Inc., Spectronics Corporation, Mid Continental Chemical, Organic Dyes and Pigments, Orient Chemical (Korea) Ltd., American Gas & Chemical Co. More Insights into the Petroleum-Fuel Dyes and Markers Market
According to the FMI analysis, the U.S. is expected to dominate the global petroleum-fuel dyes and markers market in 2022 by accounting for around 25.3% of the global share. Surging oil production across various sectors in the U.S. is leading to increasing demand for oil products and distillates, such as gasoline, off-road diesel, aviation fuel, kerosene,. This factor is expected to drive growth in the market.
India is also expected to remain one of the fastest-growing markets for the consumption of petroleum-fuel dyes and markers all over the globe. A crucial development in the refinery sector combined with growing fuel demand are both influencing the market growth over the projection period.

A History of Damien’s Earth
IN THE BEGINNING..... We don’t know anything about the beginning, beyond the word of various religious texts. However, at this point, a brief few points must be made before we begin.
The timeline of the Earth can be divided into Ages. Each Age is set apart from the next by Gaia resetting the Earth back to it’s factory settings, typically due to some apocalyptic tragedy.
Everything is true*, in regards to real-life legends, religions, mythos, conspiracy theories. If I reference something that sounds like a real-life myth, it’s because i’m referencing that real-life myth, as it exists. While Secret World Legends mixes and merges its myths to create a complete quilt of lore, most everything is taken from its original form and can be recognized.
“The secret world” is the name given to the cultures and communities that have been separated from the rest of the world due to their nature. This encompasses many communities across the entire Earth, on every continent, in every country. The deeper you go into the secret world, the more you come to understand why it is kept secret. Ignorance is bliss.
*Not everything is true. The world isn’t flat, but it is hollow. Aliens didn’t build the pyramids, but maybe they weren’t built for quite the reason you thought they were. SWL tends to avoid bad myths that they can’t do anything with.
Some names you might want to know:
The Host: Effectively God of this reality. Notably absent.
Gaia: The Immaculate Machine. The Goddess Machine. The World Tree. The Earth Mother. Protects Earth from outside threats.
The Bees: A group of humans that have been turned into immortal superhumans by Gaia, via bees swallowed in sleep. The protagonist is one. Sometimes referred to as Gaia’s antibodies.
The Protagonist: For all intents and purposes on this blog, Damien. But i’ll be keeping it vague because everyone else who plays this game will have their own protagonist.
The Dreamers: The terrifying Eldritch Gods that sleep below the surface of the Earth, and have since, presumably, the beginning of the Ages. If they wake for even a moment, the world may end, permanently, through being eaten.
IN THE FIRST AGE..... Very little knowledge exists from the first age. There are some mentions of the Garden of Eden, as well as the creation of the first humans. There are also whispers of a war between angels, the Grigori verses the Nephilim. (Can be paraphrased as, respectively, good angels vs bad angels, but it’s not quite as simple as that.) There are also still a few living beings from this age. Notably a number of angels, and Lilith, one of the first humans and mother of all monsters.
IN THE SECOND AGE..... the Hell Dimensions were made by The Host, and were introduced to Earth. Originally, this was just another form of reality; undergoing a test run. Demons and Humans associated freely during this age.   Samael, an angel from the first age, claims it was a time when iron cathedrals stained the moon blood red with sacrificial pyres. By the end of this Age, Hell had been abandoned as a flawed creation by the Host, and cut off from Earth and it’s Anima, doomed to become the Hell we know it as in the current age.
IN THE THIRD AGE..... human civilization rose to the highest level, as technology was created that could run indefinitely and repair itself infinitely. Humanity also gained the knowledge to warp the laws of reality as they saw fit. Cities walked on spider legs across whole oceans. With the power of Anima at their disposal, Third Age humans surpassed all others in terms of advancement. Several gods from other cultures are cited as being from this era, with mythos about them surviving through the catastrophic turn of this Age.
The third age ended apocalyptically, when Lilith and her husband Samael damaged an Engine, a device created to lull the dreamers into sleep, and woke one for but a single moment. It sleepily strangled the world, and fell back under. Thus ended the third age.
IN THE FOURTH AGE.... we come to the present day. 2012. The Mayans are cited as predicting the beginning of the end on their calendars. A filthy bomb goes off in Tokyo. Gaia shudders.
Centuries ago, the Secret Societies begin to form.
One: Blue. Ancient Egypt. The Children of the Eye and the Pyramid. “The Enlightened Ones.” Translation: Illuminati. They seek forbidden knowledge. They sit behind the Pharaoh’s throne. The original puppet masters. The New World, with the first colonizing ships. They weave infrastructure so tightly, a web so suffocating, that no other secret society can breathe on this land.
Two: Red. The Keepers of the Holy Grail. The Pureblooded. The Fighters. To take sword to demon flesh is to breathe. The Tower of Babel, once. Today, London. Not much has changed. Not much has to change. Where the Illuminati chase the next wave, the Templar stand still and true. Only recently have they begun to frequently admit women and people of color into their ranks.
Three: Green. Chaos. From it they come, and into it they go. A suicide a century ago causes a tsunami today. When you subscribe to Chaos, you follow no master, but that of the Algorithm. The Dragon spirals through the universe. it predates Gaia. It will outlive Gaia. Those who gather in Seoul will tell you this. They aren’t wrong.
Enter: Today. The Dreamers Dream. Their dreams manifest physically, as a black, slimy substance that corrupts absolutely. Body and soul. Today it is called the Filth. It leaks through dozens of dimensions on phantom gravity.
Lilith made a cult. She wanted to capture the Dreamers’ power for herself. The Morninglight, it is called. They worship the Dreamers, unknowingly. Their rituals mimic their desires. They pretend to eat stars. The cult is led by Philip Marquard. He was meant to be an easy puppet to control, but the Dreamers interfaced with him, and now he has a whole cult to use to wake them.
In an attempt to assassinate Lilith, a bomb was made. A filthy bomb. A man was recruited. Anxious, lonely, eager to please. John Copley took a bomb into the subway in Tokyo. He panicked. He detonated it too early. The filth overtook all of Kaidan. It spreads through the dimensions. It spreads across the Earth. It corrupts absolutely. Gaia shudders. She calls to the Host.
The Host does not answer. Her messengers, her bees, search for the next best thing. They find it in people.
A week after Tokyo, a bee flies into the Protagonist’s window, into their mouth, and changes them. They dream about voices, begging them to listen, to make the right choices. They wake up and spend the next week being genetically rewritten into a whole new entity. At the end of the week, they are contacted by one of the three secret societies, and conscripted into service.

Foulfellow and Gideon Terminal Texts
I THINK I got all the ones that pop up, but there might be some hidden ones :o
ENABLER:
 From the word of Marquard:
“A person is a collection of endless locked doors. Over time, preconceptions (our own and others') obfuscate those doors. We become flat, flaccid souls. Each lock is unique. Different key teeth trip the tumblers. It is vital to learn how to grow the teeth that will open a person.”
Enablers are specialists among our Morninglight siblings. They open the doors within. Their methods can be unorthodox, but we are beyond concern for the orthodox. An enabler has a certain, intuitive knack. Society will often try to shame this knack with imperfect words like “manipulative”.
Those who test favourably are groomed to be Enablers. Often there is little training, only direction. The Enabler is never to know the full ramifications of what they enable. That would cloud their purpose. The hand need not know what the eye and the mind divine.

BEAUMONT
Little is understood about the man known as Beaumont. He appears to be ageless. We drugged Che Hansson (a concoction of psychotropic narcotics set to his particular physiology). We interviewed Che while under the effects of this truth serum. A partial transcript of this infuriating conversation is attached below.
CHE HANNSON: So-so-so…amigo? Yeah. So that's how duck penises work. Cosmic horror, man. Duck vagina? Spiral maze with false passages and…
FAVOURED INTERROGATOR: Let's focus back on Beaumont.
CH: He's got a spiral, ballistic dick too. *laughter*
FI: Beaumont's agelessness. Where does that come from?
CH: Hereditary title, man.
FI: Pardon?
CH: Beaumont. It's a title. Passed down and down through the ages, like, to the one who's worthy. I always hoped I would be the next Beaumont…
FI: Che?
CH: Wha…? What're we talking about?
FI: Beaumont's agelessness.
CH: Right. He swallows jelly fish.
FI: Jellyfish?
CH: Yeah. The immortal jellyfish. He swallows those. Every twenty years or so. With a cocktail of other shit. Sends him back to like…like a previous life cycle stage. Man alive, you don't want to have to deal with a post-adolescent Beaumont. Fuck, no!
FI: Torritopsis dohrnii?
CH: You fucking coming onto me, amigo?
FI: Beaumont's immorality! How does he achieve it?
CH: He's a God.
FI: What?
CH: Oh. Shit! You hear that? I said it all upper case. He's a lower-case god. You seeing the letters of our words, amigo? I am… The grammar…
FI: Che? Che!!!
CH: Jesus, amigo. Not so many exclamation marks. What were we…? Immortal! Yeah. Beaumont found the fountain of youth. In Guatemala. Set up a cult down there. Human sacrifice required. And… And…
FI: Che. Focus. Look at me and focus.
CH: You gr…hmmm. You growing tentacles, dude?
FI: Beaumont does not age. Why?
CH: Time traveller. Walks the branches of the great time tree. Visits multiple points. It's how he knows what he knows. Has to constantly go back and screw his own ma just to make sure he's born again. *laughter* Incestuous paradox! Hey. Hey-hey-hey! That's a bitching band name. *laughter*
FI: Che!
CH: *laughter*
We were unable to get anything of more substance from Che. He is highly unpredictable under chemical manipulation. As far as we can determine, he does not remember this session.
--
FOULFELLOW & GIDEON:
The Great Message must occur. Yuichi is to be the Bearer. Should he falter, we will activate John Copely as a contingency.
John shows promise, but he requires a push. He must have the paradox of insecurity and confidence. He must be pliant, yet believe he can enact great change.
We have assigned Che Hansson to be John's Enabler. Che will spend a week with John. Camaraderie and excess will put John in the proper focus for an audience with Marquard himself.
Should Yuichi falter, John will carry the Great Message. John the finger. Che the itch. Neither needs be aware of the ramifications. They are vessels, sacrifices to the Dreamers.
The unenlightened will call it the greatest act of occult terrorism since the 3rd Age. We call it the Great Coming Together.
Marquard's will be done. THE ENDLESS MOUTHS PAST THE PERIPHERY smile.
UPDATE: Yuichi is compromised. Enact Foulfellow and Gideon.
-
John Copley
Withdrawn, socially awkward. A loner. Hidden depths. John is ideal to be the bearer of the Great Message.
HISTORY:
All the signs are road-mapped in John's early life. Never chosen at sports. Kept at a distance by a career-driven father. A long dead mother. Lack of early development in social skills. An obsession with reading manga and fantasies of being a hero who triumphs over great evil.
Work brought John to Tokyo. Even more isolation. He was in the perfect state. He needed an outlet. We provide. The Fear Nothing Foundation drew him in as natural as gravity. We gave him purpose, he only needed a specialised push.
UPDATE: Foulfellow and Gideon enacted. Che Hansson became John's Enabler. A week of hedonism, mind expansion, and a bond with his new “big brother”. A boost in confidence.
UDPATE: Che has left Tokyo. The spike in loneliness has left John depressed. He is in just the right place for a personal visit with Marquard.
UPDATE: John has returned to Tokyo. He remembers little of his visit to Marquard, but he is ready.
UPDATE: John has delivered the Great Message. Marquard's will be done! May They Who Dream awaken!
--
Che Hansson
One of our more accomplished Enablers. His appearance hides a cunning mind, powerful skills of observation, and ruthlessness.
HISTORY:
Born 1952 in a commune in southern Oregon. Commune led by Beaumont (appears ageless, but how?).
Che left the commune at thirteen. Reasonable success as a petty thief and dealer in Venice Beach. In the late 60s, Che enrolled in CIA research program MK-ULTRA (experimented on with LSD).
We track Che's movements to Newcastle, England in 1970, where he travelled with a group of Deadheads. He does not surface again until 1972, in a camp in Guatemala, having no memory of the time in between.
Here, Che met Beaumont again and learnt certain disciplines to treat the worst of his addiction. The two founded a small, mystical sect.
In the late 90s, Che and Beaumont joined the Morninglight, setting up a recruitment camp in Baja. Che a valuable Enabler.
UPDATE: Che will never achieve Favoured status. However, it's important to let him believe he might.
UPDATE: Che went to Tokyo to prep John Copley. Che has formed too close of a bond with John.
UPDATE: Che served as the right hand of Beaumont in our New England mission. Che's loyalty to Beaumont surpasses his devotion to Marquard. This marks Che as expendable.

Probably overthinking.
In New Dawn's Favoured Precinct, there were a set of four warehouses marked with symbols - each with a different purpose.
Tumblr media
From left to right: Barracks, Comms & Research, Library & Occultism, Food Storage
The symbols were also incorporated into wards defending Marquard's mansion. Three on the front gate:
Tumblr media
And one on a hidden entrance:
Tumblr media
It's the set of three I'm mostly looking at, the triangular one in particular.
For some context: Supernatural affairs in my world are generally governed by the Council of Venice, through whom the standards of conduct were established and have been maintained. They function ("function") as a sort of UN of secret societies with the largest representation split between the Big Three: the Illuminati, the Templar, and the Dragon. Blue, red, green
Tumblr media
The three each have different approaches and ideals, and of them, the Illuminati are the most technologically oriented. Which strikes me as strange that the Morninglight's Comms and Research facility used such a similar symbol. The other two I'm wondering...
There was, I want to say a few decades ago, a fourth large faction represented in the Council: The Brotherhood of Phoenician Sailors.
Tumblr media
They've since gone their own way, as mercenaries and smugglers primarily. But in the even longer ago, in the time of the Tower of Babel supposedly, their founder and the Templar's were brothers who fought and split off.
And then there's the Orochi Group, who have become a superpower in their own right.
Tumblr media
So. The square and the diamond, and the circle and the spiral. The charnel house and the library.
I could make a point about the Templars deserving to be tied to a mass of corpses and the monster the Morninglight was containing there, and perhaps the Dragon could be linked to the ritual sect that formed under the circle emblem.
But I might be reaching. It could be nothing and I'm looking for patterns where there aren't any. It seemed... Maybe worth noting though. In case there is something there that I'm not quite seeing.

Foreign Exchange Giant CLS Admits: No, We Don’t Need a Blockchain for That
Foreign Exchange Giant CLS Admits: No, We Don’t Need a Blockchain for That
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blockchain technology is nice to have, but it’s hardly a must for rewiring the global financial markets.
So says Alan Marquard, chief strategy and development officer at CLS Group, the global utility for settling foreign exchange trades, owned by the 71 largest banks active in that market.
Nearly a year ago, it went live with CLSNet, touted as “the first global FX market enterprise application…

What players from the last Red Sox-Dodgers World Series have to say about the 2018 matchup
Tumblr media
The game has changed a lot since the last Red Sox-Dodgers World Series!
The Red Sox and Dodgers will meet in the World Series on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Fenway Park. It’ll be the first time these two clubs have faced each other in October in years: Fenway itself was just a few years old the last time they met in the World Series, and the Dodgers weren’t even the Dodgers then — they were the Robins, and still in Brooklyn.
With all of the ways the game has changed since then, we decided we’d reach out to players from the last World Series that featured the Red Sox and the team that would become the Dodgers, to ask them about that series and the exciting 2018 iteration we’re yet to see.
We sent off some emails and made some phone calls to get those answers, and this is what we got back.
Changes in Offense
SB Nation: The Red Sox and Dodgers both have great offenses. You could even argue the Dodgers have a better one, once you adjust for their stadium and remember they led the National League in homers. Dingers weren’t a big part of the game back in 1916: how did the Red Sox offense succeed back then?
Larry Gardner, the 1916 Red Sox leader in OPS+, and the only player to hit a home run in the 1912 World Series: [Larry Gardner did not respond to our inquiry; he died in 1976 at the age of 89]
SB Nation: Babe Ruth led the Red Sox with three homers, even though he was a pitcher. Do you wish the designated hitter existed back in 1916, so that Ruth could have swatted a few more big flies?
Tillie Walker, who also hit 3 homers in 1916: [Tillie Walker did not respond to our inquiry; he died in 1959 at the age of 72]
Changes in Pitching
SB Nation: The 1916 World Series was played during what is known as the “Dead Ball” era — today, we’re concerned the baseballs are too slick and make it too easy to hit home runs. How much truth is there to the idea that that baseballs in 1916 were made out of old socks and chewed up tobacco?
Rube Marquard, “Dodgers” ace and Hall of Famer: [Rube Marquard did not respond to our inquiry; he died in 1980 at the age of 93]
SB Nation: The game has changed so much that, even though you had a 3.06 ERA and threw over 180 innings the year of this World Series, you were the worst Red Sox starter and a below-average arm. Do today’s numbers ever make your eyes pop out a little, metaphorically speaking?
Rube Foster, Boston’s worst starter in 2016: [Rube Foster did not respond to our inquiry; he died in 1976, at the age of 88]
Changes in the Game
SB Nation: Major League Baseball didn’t allow black players to play in 1916, but you, Chief Meyers, a Native American, were an integral part of multiple World Series teams in your playing days. How did you wrestle, internally, with the struggle of your people, treated so horrifically throughout America’s bloody history, being allowed to play while another group of Americans who also dealt with racism, violence, and the worst tendencies of white America were no longer allowed to play “America’s Pastime”?
Chief Meyers, the “Dodgers” catcher: [Chief Meyers did not respond to our inquiry; he died in 1971, at the age of 90]
SB Nation: They play the World Series at night now — how wild is that?
Casey Stengel, Hall of Fame player and manager: [Casey Stengel did not respond to our inquiry; he died in 1975 at the age of 85]
SB Nation: With the way language has changed over the decades, it has to be kind of embarrassing, in 2018, to have an embarrassing “boner” named after you since previously “boner” used to just mean mistake. Today we’d call that baserunning mistake a “TOOTBLAN!”
Fred Merkle, the guy who has a boner named after him: [Fred Merkle did not respond to our inquiry; he died in 1956, likely due to the embarrassment of having a terrible boner named after him]
The 2018 World Series will be broadcast on FOX, starting Tuesday, October 23!

Banks Don’t Really Want to Use ‘Blockchain’ for FX Settlement After All
It seems that whenever members of the legacy financial establishment talk about Bitcoin these days its only to bash it in comparison to ‘Blockchain’, claiming that they can usurp the technology while ditching the cryptocurrency. However, when given a chance to actually use a blockchain-based product, the banks are also reluctant to do so.

CLS Net
CLS Group, which provides FX settlement services to the likes of Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Barclays and Citigroup, has been forced to “water down” a blockchain project two years in development due to banks’ reluctance to participate. Back in September 2016, the company announced it started working with IBM on a new settlement service, with committed support by: Banco Actinver, Bank of America, Bank of China – Hong Kong, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Citibank, First Rand, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, HSBC, Intesa Sanpaolo, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Neuberger Berman and Northern Trust. Now the service is undergoing final tests ahead of a planned launch later this summer, but only about half of the originally-backing banks are expected to actually sign up in the beginning.
Alan Marquard, CLS chief strategy and development officer, explained to FN London that it was “a big ask” for banks to integrate blockchain. “You are not just installing a piece of software. They need to build operational knowledge and know-how,” and “it has security implications”. Without disclosing the cost of development, Marquard also added: “Building on new tech is always more expensive. We took the step and made this investment. Nobody has a crystal ball.”
A CLS spokeswoman responded: “It was always CLS’s intention to launch the service in phases, with the first phase clients will rely on Swift connectivity for inputs submitted to and received from CLSNet. As the service continues to grow with functionality and client adoption, and the DLT [distributed ledger technology] matures, CLSNet will enable clients to host their own node.”
Ledger Connect
Undeterred by the challenges their previous product is facing, CLS and IBM today announced a new collaboration on a proof of concept for Ledger Connect − a blockchain-based platform designed to enable banks, buy and sell side firms, fintech startups and software vendors to deploy, share and consume services hosted on a shared distributed ledger network. Users will be able to access services in areas such as, know your customer processes, sanctions screening, collateral management, derivatives post-trade processing and reconciliation and market data. Nine financial institutions, including Barclays and Citi, are said to be participating in the test.
“Together IBM and CLS have been early pioneers in advancing blockchain solutions for the financial services space,” said Marie Wieck, general manager, IBM Blockchain. “Building on the success of CLS Net and leveraging the strong relationship CLS has with the world’s leading financial institutions, Ledger Connect is uniquely positioned as a blockchain marketplace for the financial services industry, which will accelerate innovation across the ecosystem with value added services for blockchain networks.”
