CHIHUAHUA: The Official Dog of Mardi Gras

My name is Boudreaux and I’m a Mardi Gras Chihuahua. I live in Uptown New Orleans and I have friends all over the world. They think that I am lucky to live in New Orleans, because the king cake is tasty and the Mardi Gras season seems to last forever.

My friends come to visit at the same time every year. We like to wear costumes and dress up real crazy. We look so cute and have our pictures taken by people. We play so hard all day then at night we get very sleepy.

My little brother is Thibodaux and he loves to dress up, too. He lives in the Marigny and he likes to dress up for his friends. His friends love to visit and dance to Broadway show tunes. Thibodaux and his buddies love to be in the parades. Their costumes are so glitzy and sparkle in the flambeau lights. They wear lots of boa feathers and even fishnet stockings But Thibodaux is my brother and I love him just the same, even when he tries to eat my food. e can be such a pain. He loves Mardi Gras and to be with all his buddies. Mardi Gras puts a smile on his face and a gleam in his eyes.

I have a sister named Lacey who lives in Mid City. While I am a small Chihuahua, Lacey is really itty bitty. She acts like a princess in her beautiful silk costume. She always makes a grand entrance when arriving in any room. She has dozens of Chihuahuas who lineup for her attention. Lacey loves to be noticed and to be hugged by everyone. She’s always very happy and loves to be held. Mardi Gras is the time of the year Lacey loves the most

All the Mardi Gras Chihuahuas get together on Mardi Gras day. We can’t wait to wear our costumes and be in the Krewe of Barkus parade. We walk along the parade route and all the people cheer. They hand us doggy treats and tell us we look so cute.

Maybe this year I’ll meet some new friends. And we can become best friends only like Chi doggies can be. All of us will have on beautiful costumes with colors so bright. We’ll have fun all Mardi Gras day and then go to sleep late at night.

NO TE ASOMES AL BALCÓN

La noche, templada después de la #OlaDeCalor, me invitó a salir al balcón.

Jugué un rato con mi perra, regué las plantas, y me puse a mirar las estrellas.

El final del #MartesDeCarnaval había sido más tranquilo de lo que esperaba. Como en el barrio siempre hay #Corso, pensé que el #MardiGras iba a ser más estruendoso, pero no pasó nada.

"Ya es #MiércolesDeCeniza", pensé, y miré para abajo, hacia la esquina.

Justo, por la calle que corta la avenida venía una niña. Me llamó la atención su look tan amoroso. Una remerita rosa clarito, faldita de jean celeste, cabello largo color castaño y un muñeco en los brazos.

"¡Quiero ese peluche!", dije en mi interior cuando lo ví. Un gato rosado, de cola larga, parecidísimo al gatito de #Frutillitas. Ver al juguete que la nena tenía abrazado me llevó a los años 80 a la velocidad de la luz, y a la velocidad de la luz también me trajo de vuelta a la realidad actual.

La niña se detuvo de repente en la esquina, y comenzó a moverse. Por una milésima de segundo no supe qué estaba haciendo. ¿Arreglándose la ropa? ¿Estaba incómoda?

Abrió levemente las piernitas y se inclinó un poquito. Puso al gatito de peluche frente a su pelvis y comenzó a ¡perrear!

Suavecito, la niña sola en la esquina estaba moviéndose como en un encuentro sexual.

No podía creer lo que estaba observando. La nena giró y se puso de costado para seguir "bailando" con su gato rosado.

Rápido, miré mi reloj. Pasaba de las 21, y una niña estaba sola provocando con los movimientos de su cuerpo en una esquina de mi barrio.

Al ratito, por la calle de la que ella venía, llegaron dos mujeres jóvenes conversando. La nena se les unió y se fueron las tres caminando por la avenida, en la que doblaron. Como lo más natural, como algo habitual, las mujeres siguieron charlando sin decirle nada a la nena por su bailecito sexual.

Todo pasó muy rápido, tan rápido que parecía algo irreal. Pero lo que vi era había sucedido de verdad.

Miré a mi inocente perra, la acaricié, y dejé el balcón. Quise volver a la burbuja del interior de mi hogar, en el que no hay niños bailando como en un bar sexual.

"Pocas veces vi algo tan desagradable como esto", pensé con horror. "Y sólo fue en un momento que miré hacia abajo, desde el balcón... ¿Cuántos horrores no vemos mientras suceden todo el tiempo?"

Cada vez que vea al gatito de Frutillitas, lo sé, ya no me acordaré sólo de mi álbum de figuritas. Ahora veré a esa niña perreando sola en la esquina. Una imagen tremenda de la absoluta #Decadencia. Hemos perdido la #Inocencia.

Mardigras 2024

This year's carnival took place in beautiful warm weather that was already reminiscent of spring. This time the carnival did not have a special theme of masks, so the main attraction became the "Flujdumnátor", which fulfilled the inner wishes of everyone who sat on it. The procession started half an hour after noon and, after passing through the whole village, ended at approximately six o'clock in the evening in the farmhouse of the local pub.
