i learned that during the Spanish Succession War, prostitutes in Madrid, like most of the city, were sympathizers of the candidate for the throne Felipe V de Borbon.
So when English and Portuguese troops arrived in the city to crown Archduke Charles as Charles III in 1706, the prostitutes devised a biological attack on the troops. In collaboration with some doctors, they fixed and perfumed sick prostitutes. Within a month there were 6,000 cases of syphilis and gonorrhea among English soldiers, enemies of Philip V.

okay so it might be becuase i'm not on socials that much but like i see so many tumblr writers talking about the hate lucy recieves and could you like explain it/ show examples by any chance?
x
it's not necessarily hate but it's sort of this expectation on all of the Barca players to do really well in all of their games. On heaps of feeds, people will be talking about how it is usually not as stressful to watch Barca in comparison to teams like Arsenal, etc, etc, where they all have a more competitive range of teams within their league. I'm by no means saying that the other Spanish teams are bad (I'm a Real Madrid fan), but the Barca team is ABSOLUTELY stacked with players, meaning that the outcome of their games is usually much more positive.
I just think that those girls are put under an insane amount of pressure by not only other team supporters by the fans themselves. A great example is when Georgia Stanway had an own goal for Munich in the Champions League (which, let's be honest, wasn't her fault), and the majority of the comments were sympathizing with her (which is how it should be). Whereas with Lucy’s own goal (again, it was always going to go in), people were saying ‘Oh it's alright because she got a goal in extra time’ or ‘she redeemed herself’ etc. Like no one was really acknowledging the fact that it wasn't her fault?? Or that if she didn't get the next goal, would people have had less faith in her?? I don't know if that makes sense (pls tell me if you don't understand) but yeah
Barcelona is an incredible team with outstanding players but I think the fanbase is so used to the team winning by a significant margin that they’ll jump to mistake their players will make.
I'm not saying fans should be any softer towards players but there seems to be a lack of empathy (or even acknowledgment) towards the way of football. Idk, but I think that game was a healthy detox for Barca fans, and even Woso fans in general. You should back your team no matter what, through the highs and the lows.
But thank you for asking, I can always expand more if you want xxxx

“If my soul was not more elevated than the throne...”
All of Napoleon’s family members whom he had placed in high positions were in a similar position: they owed their thrones or titles to the emperor and were expected by said emperor to do his bidding because of that. Yet they of course also wanted to do what was best for their subjects and to gain some footing in their new domains, to be esteemed by “their” people and to make themselves popular. Joseph’s position in Spain surely was the least enviable, and yet I cannot bring myself to sympathize with him in the same way I can sympathize with Eugène, or with Murat.
The passage translated from a letter below helped make me understand why:
Joseph to Napoleon, Madrid, 31 August 1810
[…] In my current position, I need absolute confidence, Sire. If I do not have that, absolute retirement, whatever you wish.
That’s about the 8th or 9th time Joseph expresses his wish to quit the throne since he has put his ass on it in 1808. And he’s still here. Just saying. “Absolute confidence” of course means: I want to act as I see fit, without interference from Paris. Except for the troops, you can leave me those.
Your interests, Sire, and I dare say your glory, do not allow you to prolong any further the shameful agony of one of your brothers on the throne of Spain, exposed, in such a high place, to the mockery of your enemies and the contempt of his friends.
I feel like Joseph is trying to exploit Napoleon's insecurities here. Napoleon was always very careful not to give the "old powers" any reason to consider him as beneath them. When he scolded one of his family members he often argued along the lines of “you’re making us the laughing stock of Europe”. So Joseph now says: If you brother does not have the aboslute power of a true king, people will laugh about our family.
If my soul was not more elevated than the throne, I would accept the help that they want to give me, [...]
Hold a second! Joseph admits that people actually want to help him? 😮
[...] I would wait for time, and in the meantime I would live on the protections of my inferiors; for Marshal Soult declares in Andalusia that he loves me, as well as the Andalusian nation [emphasis in the original], where he has consented to establish himself. This is what a royal commissioner from Seville wrote to me; so we could come to an arrangement with him: Kellermann and many others would not be intractable either. But no, Sire, I will only ever come to an arrangement with you.
And here it comes. “O, sure I could try to arrange myself and find a modus vivendi with the people around me, as those are actually quite willing. But I don’t want to! I do not want to negotiate with them, I want to command them, so give me that command!” For a diplomat - that Joseph passed for during the Consulate - this is a highly suprising attitude. Also of note: the term “inferiors” [mes inférieurs].
If it does not suit you to keep me on the throne of Spain in the way that a man of honour, your brother, should be there, then make up your mind, and be sure that in my retirement I will be able to believe that the Emperor has made a great mistake in depriving himself of a man inspired by my feelings; [...]
Keep me on the throne, but on my conditions. Why? Because I am of such indispensable value to you due to my “feelings”.
[...] but I will always retain a good and tender feeling for my brother, because in the end he will not have degraded my character by keeping me in a position unworthy of me; and by restoring me to my original obscurity, he will preserve for me my self-respect and the conviction that he will not be able to remember me in the distant intervals when his thoughts, free from business, will be able to dwell on his first affections, without being forced to admit that he has not found men, in the long trade he has had with so many, who deserved more, and perhaps as much, his true esteem and his complete confidence.
Or kick me, your dearest bestest brother, the only person who truly loves you, back into oblivion. I totally will not mind [*in a breaking voice, intermingled with audible sniffing and sobbing*], I will always remain your loving brother, and one day, when I’ve died of secret grief, you will tell yourself what a huge mistake you made and that you had no better friend than your dearest bestest brother whom you’ve treated so shamefully...
So, I’m obviously exaggerating. But this is how Joseph comes across to me in many of his letters. He’s the embodiment of entitledness. He’s king like Murat, but unlike Murat who has a long list of services rendered to Napoleon to merit such a position, Joseph has done little for the empire except cash in his monthly treatment as prince of France. He owes his position entirely to the fact he belongs to Napoleon’s family, but unlike Eugène who is very self-conscious about it and does whatever he can to belatedly merit it, Joseph sees his elevation as something he has a right to, treats everybody around him (and among them people who have done decidedly more for France and Napoleon than he ever would) as “inferiors” and is only ready to discuss matters with Napoleon.
Following my first impulse, in Napoleon’s place I’d tell Joseph to stuff his elevated soul back into his arse and get some work done...

that american neighbourhood has me reeling as someone who lives on the outskirts of a city, at least what wouldve been the outskirts if they didnt build townhouses and a new neighbourhood with a very small mall there within walking distance and man. i thought it was whoville for a while until i saw that tweet. i cant believe americans are real......
There was a before and an after I knew how American housing really was. I truly don't think Americans know that we just... do not understand what it truly means to not be able to walk anywhere?? It's so ingrained in me - walkable cities are this huge thing that Americans talk about and we HAVE it. In our fucking doorstep. So it's insane to me, a lot of it.
It makes me feel very sympathetic to the plight of the American people for liberty with housing, transport and a life free of cars, tbh, because we Europeans take it all for granted.
Whenever I'm able to just step out of my house and go around town for a mental health walk, I remember that I truly should be grateful about it, because not everyone has the opportunity.
And anon: Americans ARE real. And they're suffering under an oligarchy that is not going to get better if we keep mocking them instead of the laws imposed by those in power.
Sympathize with them, don't mock them. I see a lot of fellow Europeans do it.
I love love LOVE Madrid. And I love walking about Madrid. And I love that I don't have a car and yet I can get wherever I want. I only wish that for Americans as well.

Hi I know its been years, but I was going thru your blog and I came across the failure of the wc2018 and I read that you compared the team spirit to the euro 2012. As I said its been years but can you explain me with more details why was the team divided and what players were part of this in the euro 2012? Idk why but I remember loving how the team played until the Italy game where it was notorious that they lacked motivation also what changed from that year to change the spirit for the wc2014?
Hi anon, it really has been years, hasn't it, my brain feels a bit rusty at this point, since, admittedly, I have "logged off" myself for a while now. And, as always, I only ever get back when I'm on vacation and have the opportunity (and energy) to actually collect my thoughts on stuff like this.
Going down memory lane, I do remember having a few posts me and @miasanfamilie have created to explain the whole information, if you're curious, feel free to search for my "mh" tag (and this reply in particular).
To keep the story very, very short - I loved the German NT team of 2010, which got me into football in the first place. Right after the WC 2010, Dortmund had risen to become quite a competitive team, winning the league 2 years in a row in a remarkable fashion. Thus, it was only natural that players would have been called up from that team, especially those that helped winning the U21 EUROs 2009. And basically... It all came down to Bayern and Dortmund players not getting along. Thus the team was split up into basically three groups at this point (Bayern players+sympathizers, Dortmund players+sympathizers, the neutral rest). Those barely interacted and if at all, they took the p*ss out of each other, but pretended to get along - which they obviously didn’t. The main aggressors here, as mentioned in the post above, besides Mats Hummels (this is a great read about it btw), PRESUMABLY were Thomas Müller and Toni Kroos, as they were the most “vocal”, even though we don’t have 100% confirmation on that. Manuel Neuer might have been involved as well. As for others being involved... We can’t tell, as they were probably just “tagging along”, without actively “bashing” one another. (Iiiiif I remember correctly, Marco Reus and André Schürrle tagged along with Götze and Schmelzer, who tagged along with Hummels. I’m not 100% sure who was on the neutral group, but I feel like Julian Draxler might have tagged along with Benedikt Höwedes, who was on somewhat neutral grounds, altogether with Per Mertesacker, Tim Wiese, Ron-Robert Zieler, Miroslav Klose, Lars Bender, Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira. Podolski probably just did what he wanted. :D)
The EURO 2012 was the following (thank god for the team charts I saved through all these years): Legend for: regular starters, subs, players who didn’t play at all (A for playing abroad)
1 – Manuel Neuer (FC Bayern München)
2 – Ilkay Gündogan (Borussia Dortmund)
3 – Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund)
4 – Benedikt Höwedes (FC Schalke 04)
5 – Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)
6 – Sami Khedira (Real Madrid CF, A)
7 – Bastian Schweinsteiger (FC Bayern München)
8 – Mesut Özil (Real Madrid CF, A)
9 – André Schürrle (Bayer 04 Leverkusen)
10 – Lukas Podolski (1. FC Köln)
11 – Miroslav Klose (SS Lazio, A)
12 – Tim Wiese (SV Werder Bremen)
13 – Thomas Müller (FC Bayern München)
14 – Holger Badstuber (FC Bayern München)
15 – Lars Bender (Bayer 04 Leverkusen)
16 – Philipp Lahm (FC Bayern München)
17 – Per Mertesacker (Arsenal FC, A)
18 – Toni Kroos (FC Bayern München)
19 – Mario Götze (Borussia Dortmund)
20 – Jérôme Boateng (FC Bayern München)
21 – Marco Reus (Borussia Mönchengladbach)
22 – Ron-Robert Zieler (Hannover 96)
23 – Mario Gómez (FC Bayern München)
I feel like the time between 2012 and 2014 had been a wake-up call. I remember that when more players went abroad (f.e. Arsenal Germany), Bayern had regained their winning spirit again and more “diverse” players were called up, the team dynamics changed. I can’t really put my finger on what exactly it was, but the WC qualification matches, while just as bumpy sometimes as the matches today, already felt different. More alive. Happier. The groups had started to mingle again and the bad blood was just... Gone. I assume someone hit the three names mentioned above on the head and told them to pull themselves together. It had worked. Not to play the bias card here, but players like Per, who lived and breathed team spirit, may have had some impact here on the sidelines as well. He himself mentioned he was quite depressed during the EUROs 2012 and had taken this experience for himself to grow stronger. And I can only assume that this applied to other players as well.
It was indeed a lovely transformation and I gotta say, the post 2012 era up to the WC winning in 2014 had been my absolute favourite of eras. It was a lovely team, a lovely dynamic, “villains” had managed to redeem themselves by becoming team players, the more experienced players getting the same opportunities as the youngsters, it was a great mix. And it is what today’s team severely lacks - the team of 2018 had a vileness about it that I cannot really explain. It did feel like 2012 all over again, with a huge divide between experienced and young players this time. It felt like the “WC winners” had not been willing to give up their spots for the “Confed Cup winners”, an experience that the pre 2004 players would have reconized as well. And, sadly enough, I feel like THAT was PROBABLY one of the reasons why two of the three aggressors mentioned above may have been axed after the tournament (while the third one gets hyped to no end, which makes it feel a bit random to me, not gonna lie).
As said, we might never really get to hear what actually happened, there’s a lot of speculation out there.

A bit of life
Madrid's streets were noisy today, jackal hides under the collar of his dark purple trenchcoat, his footsteps are drowned by the vigorous life, walking around him, laughing, buying and so much more.
His eyes catch the green light of the pharmacy sign, just a couple of blocks and he Will be there, and soon enough back to his apartment.
He often ponders why he doesnt go out more often, for example, today the blue Sky hasnt had a single cloud on it, the sunrays were quite nice, and people didnt seem to bother him so much, and yes, the fresh air does make his head a bit clearer.
The little bell hanging just above the pharmacy's Door clinks as he enters, the place buzzing with people of all walks of life, children and their mothers, teens who are helping with some chores, and older people buying whatever medications they were prescripted.
And talking about prescriptions, he was just on his way to collect his.
-hello , how May I help you-The pharmacist said , with a smile on her face, and bags under her eyes.
That tired smile is something ryad knows very well, he slips the doctors note as he gives a few details about the sleeping pills.
The woman nodds, saying she would be right back with the medication.
Jackal's eye scan the room, there is certain atmosphere of peace that seems weird to him.
He supposes its because of his line of work, always running around, Saving the world and training as if tomorrow is the day the world ends.
Now he is not the sappy type, but seeing siblings playing and talking makes his heart warm, altough a certain thought,or well demon, creeps from time to time, kind of jealous he didnt get to experience that.
But then a certain girl enters the pharmacy, he guesses shes in her teenage Years, maybe around sixteen, behind her is whats he supposes her younger brother.
the girl tries to Grab something from a high shelf, seeing that she couldnt, her brother made a quick excuse and his big eyes looked for the tallest person in the room.
Ryad.
The boy approached him and with a very shy tone he asked.
-Excuse me , could you help my big sister over there?-
Jackal looked over at the woman who was standing there with the medication, she nodds as a way to tell him to go and help the girl.
He quickly walks over and grabs the item the girl needed.
-Thank you sir!-the younger sibling said.
The girl picks the item from ryads hand.
-Im sorry he went to bother you Sir-she says grabbing the boys hand, walking to the queue.
-its not a big deal really, he didnt bother me at all, nor helping you-
She looks up at him, finally figuring out who he is, ryad seem to notice it as he grabs his pills.
-I wont make a scene here, but im a big fan sir, of everything you've done in your time in team rainbow...and I also heard the rumors about your life here, if they are true, im really sorry about what happened to,well, your brother- she looks down- im im sorry,If I came off as blunt there or too nosy,I just..as an older sibling I can understand the pain, and I just wanted you to know that uh, I I sympathize with you-now she is just a Fumble of words.
Ryad finds it really cute, he chuckles and shakes his head.
-Hey kid , its okay, I get it, its really nice of you-
The girls cheeks are red, she quickly pays for her stuff and thanks him again, speeding to the door as her brother makes fun of her for getting so flustered.
The cashier sighs.
-Kids right?- Jackal nodds- they recently moved here, that little girl over there?, she is so Smart for her age, well, Also went trough a lot from what I heard, sometimes kids can be mean to good people-
Jackal pays and quickly glances over his shoulder, there is no-one after him.
-How so?-Now he is the one that doesnt want to be too nosy.
-well, kid got throw into a Primary school with a bunch of shady kids, kids are mean and well, now she is here, still strong-
Jackal pieces the parts togheter, and sighs.
-But, she is always nice with everyone, and from what I saw, she liked you, trust me here, if the kid doesnt like you, she doesnt talk with you...at all, you Sir, are the lucky few she trusted right away-
Both share a chuckle and ryad leaves the place, walking slowly back to his apartment.
His mind thoughts about everything that happened there.
Some of his turmoil clears out, Knowing that he is not that bad of a person he thinks he is sometimes.
After a couple of minutes he is finally in the complex where his apartment is ,The keys on the door click, now it is Open and ryad enters his home.
He leaves the pills on the table and looks at the time.
'Already afternoon?' he thinks.
Soon enough the smell of food invades the house, ryad seems calm until the fast footsteps approaching down the corridor are heard.
-come on lau!, we are going to be late for lunch!-
-Im coming im coming!!, youre too fast !-
Those are the voices of the siblings in the pharmacy.
He shakes his head and chuckles.
He does need to get out more often.

Both leaders received around €65,000 in total. The NCRI had an armed wing that was on the United States’ list of terrorist organizations until 2012, a year before the group funded Spain’s ultra-nationalist party.
Alejo Vidal-Quadras, ex-president of Vox, which is now the third-largest force inside the Spanish parliament with 52 lawmakers, was created in 2013 with around €1 million donated by the NCRI. On December 17 of that year, the day that it was registered as a new party on the Interior Ministry’s records, Vox received its first transfer from abroad by sympathizers of the Iranian exiles. The transfer was in the amount of €1,156.22.
A month after that, then-secretary general Santiago Abascal and senior official Iván Espinosa de los Monteros began earning salaries paid for by the opponents of the Iranian regime. The money reached Vox thanks to the mediation of Alejo Vidal-Quadras, the party’s original founder and first president. Abascal’s monthly salary was fixed at net €3,570 (€5,000 before taxes), which he received between February and October 2014, for a total of €40,000.
Espinosa de los Monteros received a monthly net amount of €2,300 (around €3,083 before taxes), according to two former party officials. Espinosa de los Monteros, who is now the spokesperson for Vox in Congress, earned this salary during the same period of time as Abascal, but invoiced the payments through a company. Another Vox lawmaker, Javier Ortega Smith, turned down the salary.
The monthly amounts were determined at a breakfast meeting at the home of Espinosa de los Monteros and ratified at Vox’s Madrid headquarters. Both Abascal and Espinosa de los Monteros have declined requests for comment from this newspaper.
The gross €65,000 that both lawmakers earned for eight months came from a common party fund fed by 141 international money transfers made from various countries by NCRI sympathizers, according to a secret internal spreadsheet revealed by this newspaper last year.

The match between Rayo Vallecano and Albacete in the Segunda División was suspended after Rayo Vallecano supporter chants denouncing Albacete striker Roman Zozulya of being a Nazi. This is the first time La Liga has suspended a match due to supporter chants.
Rayo Vallecano, despite being the third club in Madrid, is known for its passionate fans and anti-fascist leanings. Zozulya was loaned to Rayo Vallecano in 2017. His contract was canceled after strong supporter opposition when they discovered his Nazi sympathies.
So throwing bananas at Dani Alves is fine, telling Griezmann to die is fine, and threatening Piqué and his family is fine, but calling a Nazi sympathizer for what he is is not ok? FFS I don’t even know why I enjoy this sport sometimes.

Veronica
Alright so I watched Veronica tonight and honestly I don’t have a ton to say about this one because honestly it was pretty middle of the road. Like I can’t really praise it a lot or trash it, it’s just kind of there, in my brain, and so I just don’t have many strong feelings on it.
This is one of those horror movies that’s supposedly based on true events, specifically a police report that was written after a bunch of spooky shit went down in Madrid in 1991, though obviously your mileage may very here. So  Veronica (Sandra Escacena) is a high school girl who lives with her three siblings and her overworked mom, so our protagonist ends up being the mother figure for her sisters and brother. During a total solar eclipse, Veronica and her friend Rosa (along with annoying tag-along Diana) perform a seance with a Ouiji Board in a creepy basement, because Veronica wants to contact her deceased father. Obviously, if you’ve seen a horror movie before, you know what comes next here.
And that’s my main problem with this movie, that it doesn’t really break any new ground. Things move on their own, doors creak and shut themselves, and spooky voices whisper through walkie-talkies. If you’ve ever sen a horror movie before, you’ve seen most of what happens here, and you don’t get enough time to really know the characters to sympathize with their plight, which would at least invest you in what’s going on. The ghost itself isn’t really much to look at, being a black naked shadow monster kind of thing that only looks good when the camera isn’t focused on it, since it’s made of some dodgy CG.
It also suffers from the classic horror problem of too much exposition (I couldn’t tell if the darkness in the school scene was from the eclipse or the goddamn foreshadowing). There’s a blind old nun who has the unenviable job of Explaining the Ghosts, and meets up with Veronica in the creepy old basement for some good, old-fashioned info dumping. Also she goes down there to smoke too I guess.
The direction and soundtrack, however, is pretty good in Veronica, which makes the monotony a bit more interesting to watch. Director Paco Plaza was the man behind the chilling and technically brilliant first REC movie, so it just goes to show he’s still got the goods here. There’s some interesting camera work that’s used to show off the ghosts, and the soundtrack is a mix of synthwave and what I assume are Spanish pop songs from the 90s, and it all works pretty well. The acting is solid too, though after awhile the little kid whose only character trait is pissing the bed kind of grated on me.
Honestly I wanted to like this one more, but there’s just not enough to make it stand out. I don’t know how much of what happened in the movie was tied to the police report its based on, but I imagine there was a lot of creative license taken with the events. For a movie that articles are calling so scary people couldn’t finish it, I expected something a bit more novel. If you’ve never seen many horror movies I could see how this one could scare you, but to horror veterans, I’d say skip it. You’ve seen this movie already.

Courtois Sympathizes With Mendy After Real Madrid Beat Chelsea
Courtois Sympathizes With Mendy After Real Madrid Beat Chelsea
Real Madrid goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois has sympathised with Edouard Mendy of Chelsea following the Senegalese’s error which allowed Benzema to complete his hat-trick in first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Karim Benzema scored two brilliant headers to give the 13-time European champions a two-goal lead after 24 minutes. But through much struggles,…
