What do you think of D.C.'s M26, do you think it was just a fire of pairs for us Shinran?
SPOILERS FOR MOVIE 26
i think, in total there are two significant shinran moments worth talking about
i enjoy certain elements of the first scene:
ran impulsively goes after a member of the black organization and puts herself in danger because he poses a threat to haibara. their fight is AMAZING, i love how ran dominates pinga despite him attacking her with a knife
something similar happens in the manga as well (chapter 434), so the writing for ran absolutely tracks here
chianti sees the fight and interferes by attempting to shoot ran - shinichi barely manages to save her in time
here's the thing: i absolutely hate the writers for often reducing ran to a damsel in distress in these movies, that's an issue i'll further analyze in a bit
with that being said, i don't mind shinichi saving ran in this scene. it's an impactful shinran moment, cause so far the writing is similar to the manga
the only difference between chapter 434 and this movie is the fact that shinichi actually sees what's happening and is able to actively protect ran. i don't have a problem with that, because that's what shinichi and ran do - they protect each other.
what i love even more is how shinichi decidedly urges ran to stay put, i think that's also very in character for him:
he wants ran nowhere near the black organization, for very specific reasons that i'll get into another post
so far, this is a well executed scene, right? it's a very realistic, high-stakes moment that we'd expect from the manga. so far, so good, right? RIGHT?!
no. cause this is where the movie writers fuck up:
W H A T
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! SHE ACTUALLY STAYS?! AND WHEN SHIN TELLS HER TO RUN, SHE RUNS?! WHAT?!
this is is supposed be ran??? no fucking way.
my girl is the definition of reckless and stubborn. she's not just the type of person who'll enter a burning house to save a girl she barely knows (chapter 174), she's also the type of person who refuses to waste a single second when human lives are at stake. no matter how much shinichi begs her to stay away.
chapter 640
and she does this in chapter 822 on the mystery train as well: shinichi yells at the detective boys, sonoko and ran, he tells them not to leave their room, no matter what. and ran repeatedly attempts to go against his instructions because she's worried about haibara, despite receiving a text message that she's okay, btw. ran's intuition tells her that something is wrong with haibara, so she's gonna fucking look for haibara!!!
i need the movie writers to understand that my girl is absolutely unhinged. she cares about other people very deeply, to the point where she's incapable of watching from the sidelines as they potentially get hurt
so how would i have written this moment? what would've been a more realistic version of this scene?
shinichi and ran get into an intense fight: shin desperately urges ran to stay put, she refuses to listen. and then there'd be two possible outcomes:
a) ran continues to go after pinga and dies in the process (remember, ran was fully prepared to die for haibara in chapter 434)
b) shinichi realizes that he can't stop ran and offers her a safer way to help. ran accepts and they work together as a team to get haibara back
why didn't the movie writers go for this approach? my theory: they don't want ran to take a bigger role in these movies, so option b) was a no-go for them. obviously it'd make even less sense for them to kill off ran, but like i already explained, there's no way ran would just give up on haibara in that moment
so why include this moment at all? what's the point of starting such a strong scene if you're not gonna progress the plot?
the point is ran being a damsel in distress.
which brings me to the second shinran moment in this movie:
ran goes after pinga again and he kicks her off the balcony, she's about to fall and get hurt
kuroda ends up saving her and shinichi feels inadequate
..............
AGAIN, THERE'S NO PLOT PROGRESSION, THE ONLY POINT OF THIS SCENE IS TO MAKE HER LOOK WEAK
idk who this woman is but this ain't ran
HERE'S RAN FUCKING MOURI FOR Y'ALL
a woman who's consistently depicted as strong, fierce and very capable of protecting herself:
chapter 43
chapter 169
and that's not to say that shinichi doesn't worry about her sometimes, ofc he does:
chapter 493
but that doesn't take away from the fact that she's a fucking badass who can defend herself
and it's not just that she's capable of protecting herself, she protects shinichi too.
chapter 5
..........
it's like the movie writers read the manga, took note of moments where shinichi comes through for ran but completely forgot that it's mutual, they come through for each other:
chapter 389
chapter 1050
the movie staff doesn't get ran, they seem to have no idea how strong or caring she is and i hate how much it's hurting the fandom's perception of her
in conclusion:

And they expect me to believe NOTHING happened between them, while both of them were working under the Black Organization?
This is how they flirt

M26 // Antonio D'Abrosca
The open cluster M26, located about 5,000 light years away, was an original discovery of Messier's in 1764. One weird feature of M26 is that there are fewer stars at its center than there should be. There is no consensus on why that is; a common explanation is that there is a light-obscuring dust cloud between us and the cluster, but that has been ruled out.

guess this is a DetCo M26 live blog now, hu? (feel free to block the tag M26 Corvids)
and right off the bat: I KNOW THAT BRIDGE! EISERNER STEG MY BELOEVED!!!
Also: for once, just for once I wanna see a movie without those kids! Don't get me wrong, I don't hate 'em, but c'mon! You have no problem cutting out the entire Kudō Mansion, whenever none of the FBI are needed - as evidenced by M22 - do you?

Just finished Conan Movie 26 and holy shit
What an absolute fantastic movie, i'm so happy.
It genuinely had everything i'd ever want in a Conan movie and it was so fucking fun to watch. Half convinced they made this movie for me specifically. Hell, it even had a brazillian drink as a new agent. No way that's a coincidence.
And god, the CoAi? Absolutely fantastic. Seeing Gin being fucking terrifying? So fucking cool. Ran being a beast of a fighter like she is supposed to? Straight up fire.
The only negative is that I could not take mr fucking Pinga seriously. And honestly, i don't think any brazillian would be able to, either.
I thought M6 was gonna stay forever as my favorite Conan movie but boy was I wrong.
10/10, must watch for any conan fan.

kir appreciation post (m26 edition)
let the movie marinate in my head for a night and i still cant stop thinking about how from start to finish kir comes back to the franchise and absolutely one ups every other noc character for me
from the very beginning they introduce her character and bring in her values as a person: for an audience who doesnt remember who she is especially its very refreshing because right from the bat you know three things:
theres an obvious chase scene going on, but she's unwilling to catch the prey, meaning her allegiances lie elsewhere
her heart is in helping people, and risks her own cover AND life in the process
and that she's not above feeling fear about how close she was to screwing everything she's worked up for up until that moment.
the cold open shows us three things immediately about kir that sets the scene for her role in the movie, way better than how she's essentially been forgotten by our floating timeline canon. now you can argue these traits are absolutely present across our current babygirls bourbon (furuya) and former member rye (akai), but with kir (hidemi hondou) the way she actively faces consequences for her defiance (getting shot multiple times, both in movie 20 and movie 26) sets her from a different bar from those two
her next scene is when she's tying up the kidnapped haibara
which is a great scene overall because it furthers her position as a woman of heart and someone who stands away from the org, but also because it is an extremely subtle nod that makes use of her high perceptiveness that was present all the way from her introduction arc BACK IN EPISODE 425
where she sees immediately through conan's cheap ass lie but makes no effort to bring light to it. in fact, that whole case, you can straight up argue she KNEW she was being wire tapped the whole time. its nice that it made a comeback 18 years later
BACK TO THE MOVIE, THOUGH, biggest fave is that in her next scene, we get to see her display the difficulty of being part of an organization that actively goes against her core principles as a person AND brings back traumatic memories for her
as naomi is being psychologically tortured by being forced to watch her dad be assassinated, kir finds this extremely hard to watch. you are then shown the flashback of what made her into a CIA agent today which you know IS KINDA FUCKED UP
like imagine your dad killed himself in front of you. shes shaking with rage but also the core memory of having her beloved father ripped from her hands in pursuit of this seemingly endless goose chase that she's already too deep in to let go
and as naomi is distraught over the death of her father she is reminded of her own position; memories, the harrowing experience of loss and how she is part of the organization that robs lives away from families.
but even after all that it strengthens her resolve to do the right thing.
GIN THIS ENTIRE MOVIE (and arguably the whole franchise) is built up to be the most terrifying enemy for all the parties involved. haibara is traumatized from her experiences with him. conan is actively uneasy at the idea of him being anywhere close. his own damn coworkers still walk on eggshells around him. YET, kir — who had already been fucking shot by gin in the very beginning already — goes toe to toe with gin and challenges him.
THIS GIRL TAKES IT LIKE NO ONE ELSE IN THIS DAMN FRANCHISE
she shows
a) manipulative skill directly. playing on words, feeding on doubt. psychological tactics that she had been trained by the CIA for (a claim they had made 18 years ago but never bothered to show until now)
b) that she's dauntless. she pressed herself against that gun and walked that edge knowing full well she could die should gin feel like it, but also with the confidence that she can and WILL weasel herself out of this situation
AND AT THE END OF THE MOVIE SHE DOES!!!!!!
SHE LIVES AND MAKES IT OUT SAFELY. this girl knows her shit and will live to tell the tale. even if its just plot armour working, it damn feels good to have them show a character worth their salt this way
as an extended bonus, this woman-gaze directed promo art is crazy.
im in love with her actually.

Going absolutely insane with the tiny little details here. With how slightly bigger his hands are, how haibara's fingers are smaller and her nails look so pretty, how Conan's hand is actually the one gripping hers because he was dragging her up basically, making sure that she kept swimming up with him.
Look. See. It's the way their hands fit together just right. Like this is THEE scene Im losing my mind dawg

FINAL UPDATE: Detective Conan: "Black Iron Submarine" ends theatrical run at 18th place in the All-Time Japanese Box Office.
I wanted to wait until there was official confirmation that the film had been taken off of theaters, but given that they are now focusing on promoting the film's home release, as well as the upcoming 27th film, there's no time like the present.
The 26th Detective Conan film, "Black Iron Submarine," which first premiered in Japanese theaters on April 14, 2023, has consistently stayed in theaters for weeks, breaking not only records for the series, being the first Detective Conan film to earn more than 10 billion yen, but also records in Japan, climbing its way up the box office. After about 28 weeks just before the end of October, it was finally taken off theaters, claiming 18th place, earning around 13.83 billion yen total. This is the longest a Detective Conan film has consistently stayed in theaters to my knowledge.
That is such a huge feat. The second-highest-earning Detective Conan film, the 25th one from last year, "The Bride of Halloween," landed at 47th place, earning about 9.78 billion yen. That is about a 41% improvement from last year. It's hard to imagine if next year's film could even top what was just achieved.
Here are examples of the films that "Black Iron Submarine" outcompeted in Japan.
All Star Wars films
All but the first two Harry Potter films
All Disney films except Frozen I
All Tom Cruise films ("Top Gun: Maverick" is still in theaters and could overtake albeit slowly)
All The Lord of the Rings films
All Matrix films
"Jujutsu Kaisen: 0"
"The Wind Rises"
"Evangelion 3.0+1.0"
Congratulations to "Black Iron Submarine" for breaking into the top 20! While I'm a bit sad we weren't able to hit 14 billion yen, this is still a respectable showing. So far, the film has been premiered outside of Japan in Asia, the Middle East, Germany, and France. Hopefully, with its great success, that will expand to more territories.
