Kayaking in the Adirondacks

On my 2014 trip to the Adirondacks, I was fortunate enough to learn about several great kayaking destinations. Please see what I think of a few of them, and don’t hesitate to reach out if there are any I should add to this list!

Indian River

The Indian River spans from the Indian River Village to Black Lake and offers outstanding kayaking, canoeing, and fishing opportunities. About 75 miles of the river are easily navigable by small boat, and there is public access to over 10 natural lakes along the river. These lakes range from shallow lakes that support crappie, bass and perch, to deeper cold-water lakes that are home to lake trout and Atlantic salmon. Most of these lakes are horse power limited at 10-HP for motorized boats, making them well-suited for paddling. The river slow-moving and spans several counties (Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence) across the Adirondack mountains. A 20 plus mile stretch of river runs along a restricted access part of Fort Drum Military Reservation, and a permit is required for canoeing or fishing. A permits can be obtained (for free) from the Provost Marshall's Office in Fort Drum.

Grass River

At the northwest corner of the Adirondack Park is The Grass River, a tributary of the St. Lawrence River. This river consists of 2 main branches, the North and South Branch. Like many rivers of the Adirondacks, it once served as a power source for several mills and manufacturing operations located in the towns that the river runs near. The evidence of this is visible from the river in the form of stone foundations, furnaces, and other long abandoned industrial structures along its banks. The grass is home to native brook trout, small-mouth bass, and walleye.

The North Branch - The Northern Branch of the Grass is thirty-six miles long and  flows from Canton to Massena. Kayakers and canoe paddlers with beginner skills can easily navigate this portion of the river, as most of the portages are short and easy. North Branch typically contains warm-water species of game fish: bass, walleye, and bullhead to name a few. Boat access to the North portion of the river can be found at road crossings, access roads that run nearby the river, and state game lands in the area. There are municipal boat launching sites at Upper and Lower Lakes Wildlife Management Area, Madrid, and on Andrews Street of Massena.

The South Branch - The Southern branch of the Grass is forty-nine miles long, flowing from Degrasse to Canton and typically is home to cold-water game fish. Brook trout (native) and brown trout (stocked) are the main attraction for fishermen on this part of the river. There are periods of time when the water is fairly shallow for paddling, so keep this in mind when planning. There are a few rapids below Russell on a somewhat remote stretch of the river that is not recommended for beginner paddlers.

Saint Regis Canoe Area

Saint Regis Canoeing Area, located in the southern part of Franklin county, is home to more than 150 individual bodies of water. The lakes and small ponds are the head-waters of three rivers: the Saint Regis, the Saranac, and a portion of the Raquette River. In the nineteen seventies, part of the area that is home to 58 of these lakes and ponds, was declared as a Canoe Area. Snowmobiles and motorboats are not allowed in the area since, and neither are permanent structures other than log lean-tos. The Canoe Area contains many small ponds with various routes that can be taken to explore the area. One of the best-known and oldest routes through the area is the Nine Carries route. This approximately twelve mile route was a popular route for canoes, kayaks, and guide boats in the eighteen hundreds. The route is accessible near the NYS Fish Hatchery, off of Route 30. There are lean-tos on the southern most shore of Saint Regis Pond, as well as campsites scattered around this area. Keep in mind, some of the trout waters located inside the Saint Regis Wilderness Area are maintained by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and are subject to special fishing and camping regulations.
