Something About the Night
Chapter 6: Crash and Burn and Fall
Polly furiously slams each document on the table, "Two trucks were hijacked while transporting goods. Three pubs got stolen from, and one club was attacked by those Triplets group and one got burned down. And they were fucking wannabe gangsters. What the hell is going on?"
"That's what we're trying to figure out, Pol." That's all Tommy could answer.
"You better fix this, Tommy." She points her finger directly at him. It wasn't a request, it was an order.
Everyone was silent, and it was only the silence that was loud. All heads were down, steps ahead of everyone else, but weren't ahead enough.
Misfortune after misfortune. Trouble after trouble. Staying on their feet wasn't enough. Even the fixed races was a disaster at the very last minute causing them a lot to loose.
Someone was messing with them, and it wasn't funny.
"America wants to end the deal." John says entering the room.
"Fuck," everyone silently groan.
Tommy runs his hand on his face in annoyance. This wasn't part of the plan. America was their biggest venture and they made their call in backing out.
"What the hell is happening?" Polly quickly stands slamming the wooden table. "None of you got itchy hands, righ? Or might have put their bag down on the floor these past few days?" She asks looking at each one of them.
Arthur takes his drink in one gulp, "Calm down, Pol. You going back to those gypsy superstitions-"
"Because you don't forget where we came from!" Arthur looked down ashamed of what he said.
"What about her?" Esme ask.
"Who?"
"The lady of Asia, with a French name."
Tommy send glares to her, "What about her?" His tone wasn't happy.
"She said something about to take what is given." She clarifies, then her husband added. "But Asia still stands."
"Until when? Was it a threat?" Asking the same people who were there that night.
"Or a curse," Polly murmurs to herself. "What else did she say Tommy?" She asks her nephew.
Tommy took a drag, "I don't know Pol. You were the ones talking to her remember?" He was getting annoyed; being put on a difficult position. He need to keep his walls especially now that his family was blaming her for something she hadn't done.
Esme wasn't backing down, "She didn't seemed pleased when she left." Which she receives another glare from his brother-in-law.
"Who is she, Tom?" Polly asks again. And this time she was expecting an answer.
"I don't know Pol," he stubbornly answers the question lookingthe other way.
"You better not play fool with me, Thomas. If she cursed us then that would explain everything."
"I don't fucking know alright?!" Tommy was on the edge of breaking, he was ranging, everyone wanted answers so he give them an answer. But no matter what answer he gives them, no one wants to accept. They needed someone to put the blame on and Tommy won't give them the satisfaction. "I first met her at the engagement party, then at Carisi's social party and at that fucking restaurant. Only those 3 times, so I don't know who she is." He lies, but only a half lie. He knows who she is but doesn't know who she is.
"I'm sorry, all that's been happening was a little overwhelming," Polly calmly explains, "you should head home and rest, your wedding is in two day."
Fuck. That's what he could have said, but didn't. He didn't want to be reminded of that day. It was like he was waiting for an execution, with the invisible rope around his neck getting tighter and tighter.
"Asia heard the news about America, and wants to reconsider. I sent someone to check on it so you shouldn't worry," It was Polly at the other end.
"Alright," he ends the call.
One can easily take what is given. He hears her voice whispering in his ear. It wasn't his fault but something inside of him was telling him it was his.
Tommy grabs his coat and puts on his peaky cap, he was on his way through the door when Grace emerges from the study, "Leaving?" She asks, it was obvious but she still asks anyway.
"Polly called. I need to go back to the office to sort things out." He lied again.
Grace approaches him and gives a peck on the lips, "Alright, don't forget about tomorrow. I'll see you at church."
Tommy just nods and went straight on his way.
Grace wasn't worried at all, everything was all set. Tomorrow she was going to marry Thomas Shelby. Tomorrow she will be Mrs. Shelby.
"You can stop here Eddie, I'll take it from here." The driver stops the car as Tommy steps out. "Take this and go home, enjoy the rest of the day. I'll see you tomorrow." He hands him some money as he sets his driver on his merry way.
He got in and drives. He drives to the place where only they both know.
Adrenaline course through her veins, dirt stains the hem of her white dress as she ran as fast as she could. Cold air bit into her lungs, heart rapidly beating, she was getting tired but she must make it. The veil on her head had already fallen somewhere along the way, her hair was in an unruly state, with all her might she pushes the church doors open.
Everyone inside was looks at her, she looks around seeing their expressions. She could see it all, there were sadness, concern, frustrated, terrified, panicked painted across their faces, but most of all they were sorry.
She recognizes the faces but she couldn't find the face she was looking for. Tears starts to break down, Ada approches her and all she could see was her.
"Where's Tommy?" She asks her. Ada just stayed silent, she didn't know what to say.
"He's not here," Polly answers her question. "We looked for him and still looking. The boys are looking for him now."
"He's an hour late," Ada knew what was happening and so did Polly, and so did everyone else. "I don't think-"
"There'll be a wedding," she tries to argue Ada. "He's just running a little late. I'll wait. I'll wait."
Time kept on moving as she sat by church's steps, people had started to leave, others stayed; even her family looked at her sympathetically when they left. The church smelled like scented candles, flowers had started to dry as the sun slowly sets.
Ada came to her side wrapping a shawl over her shoulders, "It's getting dark, we better go back."
She was being hopeful - hopeful that a bridesmaid of hers was just telling a terrible joke when she ran through the doors bearing the news. She was being hopeful as she patiently waited for her fiancée to come. She knew that he wouldn't come back home when he walked out through the doors, but she was certain that he was going to come. Because it was suppose to be their wedding day.
"Grace," Ada calls on her for the second time. She just looked at her defeated, it was dark and Tommy wasn't going to come.
She could feel her legs shaking as she stood, seeing the last ray of sun as it fades into the night realization shook her.
That woman knew.
She told her. She warned her. She knew.
Tommy stumbles forward and grabs the night stand for support. While holding the bottle of whiskey he pulls himself upright, as he continues to walk by the window. The night was still, very still. The stars twinkling in happiness and the cold air dancing with the lights.
He to a swing from the bottle, he had given up on the glass as it was doing no good. Cigarette after cigarette. Bottle after bottle. Alcohol was poison, and drinking too much can kill. Maybe there was something inside of him he wanted to kill.
He tried to reach for a cigarette on the table but only resulted in falling backwards. He tries to push himself up but failed, his world was starting to spin, everything was becoming two, he could feel all the whiskey coming up. He closes his eyes to shut everything but water started to fall, emotions were slipping through his fingertips. He sobbed silently, his world was slowly crumbling and it was all his fault.
The door opens, he kept his eyes close as he could hear the silent footsteps approaching; it stops just above him. He opens his eyes to see her looking down on him, from where he lays she stood as tall as the trees touching the skies, her dress whirls like dried leaves in the wind.
"You didn't come."
"You didn't call."
"I waited," for two days.
"I know."
With all his force he slowly gets on his knees, slowly walking towards her. He places his head on her hips, feeling the softness of her dress in his skin, his arms wraps around her, "Please don't leave me." He pleads.
"I'm sorry," he holds her tighter than ever, afraid that if he loosens she'll disappear. "Don't leave me. Please." He sound so broken..so lost.
She tenderly runs her hand through his hair, to brushing his cheek,he looks at her meeting her eyes.
He looks at her full of yearning and adoration, he closes his eyes again feeling her touch as she caresses him.
He look at her once again, "I never left, Tommy." The warmth of her words made roots to his heart, "You forgot yourself, and you forgot me."
