Atlantic Runaways (Part 3)

Lol we got part 3, which is mainly just a lot of fluff and plot developement uwu

He rolled in bed as his alarm went off, the familiar tune of the able sisters calling him into awakening. Much to his displeasure. How dare this alarm tell him to get up when wait- shit! He had a job!

He came to his thoughts as he shot out of bed, checking his phone to see that the alarm was late. “SHIT!”. But then stopped for a minute, he remembered it was a Saturday. Why would his alarm be going off on his day off?

Then he realised he was going too late for his meeting with Tubbo.

He grabbed his hoodie, rushed downstairs and ran across the street to the nearby park that he and Tubbo would meet up in.

As he ran his best friend came into view, with an unamused face of course. “Tubbo! My man!”. He managed to get out as he came to a halt, panting his lungs out. “About time, you dickhead!”.

“Sorry! Sorry! A lot of things happened yesterday…”. It came out almost abrupt but confusing as the reality of yesterday’s events were finally hitting him. No wonder he overslept, he was exhausted.

“You okay Toms?”. He snapped out of his mind and looked to Tubbo, “Fine! How about we grab some coffee from the café?”, “Sure, but I’m not grabbing coffee. I’m getting hot chocolate!”.

…

“Tubbo, it’s the middle of fucking summer…”, “THAT WILL NOT STOP ME FROM CONSUMING AND ENJOYING MY CHOCOLATEY BEVERAGE!”.

The two made their way to the café in the middle of the park, it was quite a famous public area so many people frequented the place. They took their orders, the hot chocolate and coffee with a side of biscuits. Because Tommy didn’t have breakfast.

The two just sat on their phones for a moment, the atmosphere of awkwardness raising, it was apparent to Tubbo that something was off about Tommy, he was normally more hyperactive, talkative, and well, energetic. Something was clearly on his mind, and he didn’t want to talk.

But Tubbo was determined to get answers. The drinks soon arrived and Tubbo put away his phone, sipping at his hot chocolate. Ignoring the boiling temperature in favour of looking dramatic. He looked at Tommy with narrowed eyes, but his attention was focused on his phone.

“So…”. Tubbo spoke up, Tommy’s attention went from his phone to Tubbo. “What’s up?”, Tommy asked while furrowing an eyebrow, Tubbo was acting differently.

“What’s going on? You’re acting differently.”. Tubbo usual tone is gone, replaced with a serious one. Oh god, it was a serious one. Did he do something? Was he suspicious? He didn’t really want to tell Tubbo what had happened.

“Uhh, nothing?”. Tubbo slammed his fist on the table. “Okay! Okay! Maybe almost got murdered yesterday at work?...”. Tubbo always held a level of intimidation so Tommy couldn’t help and spit it out, much to his displeasure.

“What?”, Tubbo spoke quietly, not wanting to get more attention from the customers that were already staring at them. “Okay, let’s finish this outside.”.

The two then quickly ate their biscuits and finished their drinks, Tommy grabbing a can of Coca Cola on the way out. The two then made their way to their usual bench, secluded from the rest of the park.

“So, what do you mean you almost got killed?!”, Tubbo asked the moment they sat down. Tommy almost choked on his cola. “Right uhm…”. He tried to find a way to put it.

“Basically, you know that trainer guy who was really sketchy?”, “Yeah…”. “Basically, he threw me into the water with a dangerous Mer? Well, not really dangerous now... But-“. Tubbo slapped a hand over Tommy’s mouth and pinched his own nose and sighed. “Slowly.”.

Tommy in turned sighed when his mouth was released, he was going to have to go into more detail. “Trainer guy I was working under was treating Wilbur like shit, course me and Wilbur weren’t on the best of terms but that isn’t a right to treat a creature like us like total shit! So, I stood up for em’ “.

He continued, “In turn, he got mad and pushed me into the water. As you know I’m not the brightest out there and I didn’t manage to suck in any air. So, I was drowning…”. “That’s how you almost died?...”.

Tommy looked down and nodded, his arms hugging himself. Tubbo comforted him with a hug, rubbing his back as Tommy leaned into the touch. “Mhm…”. He mumbled. The two stayed there for a moment, in comforting silence.

“How did you get out?” he asked once Tommy had calmed down. “I- Wilbur saved me. I don’t know why but he did, he fucking ate me while doing it too!”, “What?!”.

“Turns out some Mers have what’s called a brooding pouch, a place where they store young. Wilbur put me there for a while”. “Wait- Brooding pouch?! He ate you but didn’t eat you?”. Tubbo said in confusion to which made Tommy laugh.

“Yeah, turns out he can speak too! So, now I can actually talk to the bitch! And now we’re friends, I guess? Well, that and he actually comforted me after what happened, so after all that I walked home at whatever time it was and fell asleep.”.

Tubbo went straight into protective mode, hugging Tommy with a lot of strength, “I’m glad you’re alive! But Wilbur, you think you guys are friends?”. “I guess so, he seemed rather friendlier than usual”.

“Whatever it is, be careful. He could still be dangerous!”, “I will don’t worry! I just, I feel bad for Wilbur. I’m gonna try and do whatever I can to help… Wait- how come you’re okay with all this?”.

“Because I know you Toms, and I know I won’t be able to stop you even if I tried so you have my support, okay? If you need a hand lemme know”.

The two did their usual antics after that, playing around and such like they have since childhood and after all that he went to bed.

The next day went by quickly as he was mainly playing games and stuff. He tried to think of plans, something of what he could do to help Wilbur.

He woke up with a lot of energy that morning, he had plans and he knew that work is going to be absolute chaos.

The moment he arrived at work that day there was a sort of rush of anxiety and excitement, he was excited to see Wilbur again but also scared of the fact of how Wilbur would react.

He walked past the halls and into Wilbur’s containment. There stood the trainer, sitting on a stand, smoking his darn cigarette.

He heard the door open and looked over to see Tommy. His eyes widened in shock, coughing as he clumsily inhaled his cigarette. “Y-you’re!”. “Yeah, I’m alive. Shut it”.

The man opened his mouth and stood up, approaching Tommy menacingly. Tommy’s confidence faded as he brought up his arms to shield himself from the man. But the man didn’t even stand a chance as water splashed around the two.

And there was Wilbur, barring his sharp teeth, his eyes dilated as he saw the man staring down at his trainer. The trainer immediately backed off when he saw the Mer, running away cowardly out of the room. Leaving him and Wilbur alone.

Tommy looked nervously to Wilbur whose harsh expression turned softer as he looked down at Tommy, he leaned down to Tommy’s height. “You, okay?”. “Yeah, fine. Thanks Wil.”.

Wilbur smiled as he brought out his hand, offering it to Tommy to which he looked down at it in confusion, to which Wilbur responded by just picking him up completely. “Glad to see you’re okay, I’ve been worried”. He nuzzled Tommy.

“Oi, stop it bitch!”. It made Wilbur laugh. “Why are you so cuddly?!”, “You should know this, it’s common knowledge for mers”. Tommy took a minute to understand what he meant then the realisation hit him.

“Right, you bitches get attached to things easily”. And in response, Wilbur brought a claw to gently rub Tommy’s hair. “Right there, gremlin boy!”. “I am no gremlin!”.

The two then settled down with Wilbur swimming around in his small pool, which honestly made Tommy cringe with how small it was. “You hungry?”, he yelled out as he pulled out a heavy bucket towards the pool, it was filled to the brim with fish.

Wilbur popped his head out of the water, “Always hungry, honestly”. He swam towards the end of the pool where Tommy was, “Right”. He brought the bucket to Wilbur, to which Wilbur opened his mouth wide.

Tommy could make out the many sharp fangs, he could easily be swallowed whole. It freaked him out, he shrieked and stepped back. Wilbur closed his mouth and tilted his head in confusion at Tommy’s sudden yells. “What’s wrong?”.

“N-nothing, just you kinda scared me for a second “, “Oh! Sorry! Just thought you’d feed me like that”. “O-oh…”. Tommy then took a breath and came back close to Wilbur, Wilbur picked up on what Wilbur was doing and opened his mouth back up.

He then threw the bucket of fish into Wilbur’s mouth, who immediately swallowed the fish. Although not normally a part of a whale mer’s diet, it was the only thing that he could really give Wilbur to eat out here.

Wilbur then went back to swimming whilst Tommy laid his feet in the water and surprisingly, Wilbur didn’t mind it.

“So. Uhm- you okay Wil?”, “Just fine, Tommy” he answered as he swam. Fortunately, Mers could hear just as well from above the water, even if they were underwater. So, the conversation would be rather normal.

“How are you feeling after that day?”, “Fine, I talked to a friend about it. Got it off my mind and shit.”, “You told somebody about me?”, his tone changed. Tommy looked to Wilbur, “Y-yeah, I hope that’s okay!”, “Are they trustworthy?”, “Yeah!”, “Okay.”.

There was another moment of silence until Tommy spoke up, “Wilbur, don’t you hate being here?”. “Yes, I do, I absolutely despise it here. I hated it the moment I got here”, “Do you wanna go back to the ocean?”.

…

“Yes I do, but that isn’t possible.”.

“What if it is though?”.

“Tommy, you’d have to be a maniac in order to pull off an operation on your own”.

“Well I am a maniac, I’ll do it!”.

“Toms-“.

“Let’s run away Wilbur!”.

…

“Tommy!” Wilbur pinched his nose and sighed, “I get it, you wanna help and I’m all up for it. But it’s dangerous. I don’t want you getting hurt”.

“It’ll be fine Wilbur! Come on! Don’t you wanna get out of here?!”. Wilbur looked to Tommy who had determined eyes, he couldn’t help it, he found them adorable. He sighed again, “Finee, but we’re going to be really careful about this okay?”.

Tommy smiled and stood up, reached out for Wilbur, Wilbur happily hugged him back with his hand. It made Tommy laugh, which brought a smile to Tommy’s face.

“We’ll run away!”.

Grumble grumble

Gonna grumble about life below the cut, lol! I’m mostly talking about covid-19 in the states.

A few states have closed down public schools for the next two weeks, which means that many parents are unable to go to work (many daycare centers follow local school shut downs).

My workplace responded by telling everyone who can work from home to work from home. I am a hands-on lab researcher, which means I must continue coming in. However, they created a temporary category of leave for folks who have been exposed to covid-19, or who are showing symptoms. They are paying workers to stay home if they are symptomatic. So really, this is a generous and effective policy... Provided people use it properly.

And any system that relies on people behaving sensibly is a bad system.

What people don’t seem to realize- even people who work in pharmaceuticals?!- is that covid-19 symptoms aren’t limited to coughing and fever. It can also look like the common cold, especially in young, healthy individuals.

I nearly lost my cool yesterday because two of my direct, lab-bench buddy coworkers have been coming to work with cold symptoms. Another was coughing all day, until people shamed him into going home. Meanwhile, one coworker was explaining that her husband’s coworker was exposed to covid-19. I asked why the hell she was here, and she said she’s quarantining on Monday when our telework option officially starts.

Guess I’ll just die potentially become a walking incubator of a disease that could kill other people, then?

Situations like covid-19 call for strict, clear rules stated by the federal government and enforced all the way down. All travelers from impacted areas must be tested/quarantined. Telework is mandatory when possible. Anyone showing any kind of illness symptom must be sent home and put on paid admin leave. Is this disruptive? Yes. Will people abuse it? Yes. Will it drastically reduce the scope of the pandemic and save lives? Yes, so it’s worth it.

Sadly, Trump removed the people who handled the Ebola threat with clear, country-wide enforced rules and... Never... replaced them. We do not have much in the way of federal guidelines, leaving state leaders to decide what to do about covid-19. When Congress tried to get approval for mandatory paid leave for people exposed to covid-19, it was shot down. We don’t have enough covid-19 testing kits. Our federal government has done nothing to protect us, even though they had time to prepare compared to China, and even Italy, which is... beyond frustrating. Beyond the pale, really.

I’m trying to do stuff to help? I pointed out to my boss that our water bottle filler operates by pressing a lever to release water... And people press it with the mouths of their water bottles. He blinked and said, “Yikes... I dispense the water with my cup, too.”

Humans are humans. Scientists are also short-sighted humans, just like everyone else. And if people who have dedicated their lives to creating life-saving medicines can be this ineffective in a pandemic situation... I dunno, I don’t think the future is looking good.

As for the non-scientists in my life, they’re literally more worried about toilet paper than the disease. I told my mom that I’d get her a bidet attachment, and she was insulted? I dunno what it is about Boomers that makes them derive genuine pleasure from hating anything that reduces waste.

If you’re interested, here is what I’m doing to try to stay safe:

-Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, frequently. Do not substitute this with hand sanitizer.

-Do not touch your face.

-Sanitize your phone and computer daily with alcohol wipes (Lysol is better, but check your device documentation to be sure it can withstand it).

-Don’t worry about toilet paper, buy a gosh danged bidet attachment. Also, food and TP shortages are not the problem. Even in quarantines, food stores should be open. But, if you buy produce or anything loose that people can touch, clean it thoroughly. A sick person could have handled it.

-Don’t eat out. Sadly, food industry workers rarely have sick leave and are forced to come in to work when ill.

-Avoid crowds whenever possible, push to telework if you can, don’t travel.

-If possible, stay home if you have any kind of cold or flu symptom.

-Sanitize your home. Look, I love gentle solutions as much as the next Millennial, but it’s time for bleach and Clorox.

-If you must report to work, inspect the communal coffee/water dispensers. Could they potentially spread disease? If yes, report the concern and don’t use them until they are replaced with safer alternatives. Also, do not eat food left out in communal areas following meetings.

-(Edit: I walked back this stance in a new post after talking about this in therapy. I no longer recommend what you’re about to read in this bullet. Check the post linked at the bottom of this post for why.) If your coworker is sick and your company offers sick leave/admin leave, shame them, report them, get them out. I have coworkers who call this a dick move. I respond that taking the risk of turning everyone around them into covid-19 incubators soars beyond ‘dick move’ and into the realm of ‘endangerment of the elderly and the immunocompromised.’ (Seriously, at least two of my coworkers have immediate family members who have no immune system and wouldn’t stand a chance against covid-19).

-If you’re in the states, you might not be able to be tested for covid-19. I really don’t know what you’re supposed to do if you think you have it, other than immediate self-isolation. Calling your doctor for advice is probably the best place to start. I would not roll into a medical facility without calling ahead. There might be infected people there, and they might not even have the kit to test you.

In closing, if you are healthy and under age 65, you will most likely be fine if you are infected at this point in time. But about 3.6% of the USA is immunocompromised. About 12% is elderly (over 65). In 2018, there were 327 million people in the states, ish. So that’s, what... About 51 million people at risk in my country alone?

If the pandemic grows beyond the point where our medical system can handle it, even young, healthy people will be at risk, since people won’t be able to receive proper treatment.

I realize this is scary and disruptive. I’ve never had trouble sleeping in my life outside of jet lag and situations where I was in too much pain to sleep... But now I’m struggling. My costochondritis is having a field day, lol!

It’s a fascinating mini case study, so please read it! Also: please don’t force your ideas of what should be done on other people, like I suggested above, that’s the main thing.

‘Let me see him! Move out of the fucking way, I need to see him!’ You shouted, trying to shove people out of your path.

Your colleague and husband of two years, Spencer Reid, had been injured in a shootout with an unsub. He had been swiftly carted off in an ambulance, leaving your heavily pregnant self in the protection of your team mates. ‘No!’ You screamed, as Prentiss and Garcia came running into the group. Right at that moment, you felt a sharp pain in your stomach.

‘Uh… Y/N? Did you spill some water on the floor?’ Emily asked, pointing at the pool of liquid residing at your feet.

A second wave of pain hit you, as you fell to the sofa.

Your entire body was in agony, as you screamed out and clamped down on Penelope’s hand in the process.

‘Unfortunately, honeybun, I don’t think you have a choice right now.’ Penelope said, as she and Prentiss helped you up off the sofa.

Prentiss and Garcia placed you in the backseat, as you sprawled out next to them, gripping their hands throughout the waves of agony. Tears streamed down your face, as you thought of Spencer in surgery, and the fact that you might lose him. You couldn’t do this by yourself. You couldn’t keep going without him. The baby needed their father, and you needed your Spencer.

‘Here she is.’ The nurse said, handing you your baby girl after wrapping her in a blanket. You had just made it to the hospital in time, and you chosen Penelope to stay with you throughout the labor.

You looked down, your face wet with a mix of sweat and tears, at your daughter. She made every second of pain worth it. Garcia was gazing at her newly born goddaughter with tears in her eyes, as the nurse let Hotch and Prentiss into the room.

You saw Hotch, and sobbed. ‘I’m so sorry Hotch, for what I said. I didn’t mean it. It wasn’t your fault.’ Hotch smiled, an expression that you rarely see from your boss, and walked over to your bedside.

‘It’s fine, Y/N. She’s absolutely beautiful.’ He said, leaning down and planting a gentle kiss on your forehead, as you leaned into him. Before Prentiss had chance to meet your daughter, a doctor rushed into the room.

‘Mrs. Reid, congratulations. I am here to tell you that your husband is out of surgery, and is now awake. The surgery stopped the bleeding and he should be able to make a full recovery.’ He said, with a smile.

‘Can I see him?’ You asked. The doctor nodded, as the nurse brought a wheelchair to your bedside. You are escorted down the corridor, Hotch, Prentiss and Garcia in tow. You see Rossi, Morgan and JJ waiting outside the room, with grins on their faces.

Rossi leaned down and kissed you on both cheeks, as your BAU family stood around and admired your daughter.

Morgan gently touched her head and smiled. ‘Babygirl has a baby girl!’

You looked down at your sleeping baby and whispered. ‘Are you ready to meet your daddy?’

JJ and Prentiss each embraced you, before the nurse wheeled you into the room. You were greeted to the sight of Spencer, sat up in bed with a sling on his arm, smiling at you with tears in his eyes. The nurse positioned the wheelchair next to the bed, as Spencer moved over to allow you to shuffle onto the bed. Tears were rolling down your cheeks as you supported your daughters head, and Spencer cradled her in his free arm.

‘This is Eden Diana Reid.’ You whispered, as you leant your head on his shoulder. Spencer’s expression softened as he gazed down at his daughter with a look of unconditional love.

‘She’s perfect.’ He croaked. ‘You’re perfect.’

‘I thought I was going to lose you, Spence.’ You sobbed. ‘I couldn’t do it without you. I couldn’t live without you.’

‘Hey, hey, hey.’ Spencer whispered, turning to place a kiss on your temple.

‘I am not going anywhere. Never. I promise. You and Eden are my whole entire world, and nothing will ever take you away from me.’ He murmured into your skin.

‘And... Spence?’ You began. ‘I kinda screamed at Hotch and blamed him for what happened today. I feel really bad. Can we let him be Eden’s godfather?’

Spencer laughed. ‘Yes, I can deal with that. Penelope and Hotch will be the best godparents ever, I already know it.’

So basically. Im an 18 year old male. I passed my driving test in june 2013. My car insurance is too high. Now normally i wouldnt care but the reason i am asking this question is because. Hello - I was involved in an auto-accident in March of 2006 in which both insurance companies (mine and hers) agreed that it was the other party's fault and I was a zero-liability. So it's October 22, we are here in Ponta Delgada, and we've had a few interesting things happen. In the never ending wait for our self steering unit, we actually had a hurricane come past us. Very well south of us but we had strong wind warnings and being in this particular marina, we were concerned about the surge that comes in and starts rocking the boats all over the place. We thought about making our way back to Vila Franca, since the harbour is a little more protected, but decided against it, thinking we are already here, our self steering should be coming and then we will just have to come all the way back. We knew the storm was coming by Oct 9, and everyday we wrote down the forecasted position of where Hurricane Ophelia was predicted to go. Then we took those coordinates and plotted them on our raymarine chartplotter to see the curve of the hurricane and how close it was coming to us. As long as she didn't curve hard north too soon, we would be well clear of any real weather, but we prepared for it anyways. Mike worked on tying line after line from boat to dock to give us a really good holding on it for the strong north winds we were going to get during the worst of it. But before the north winds came we would have strong southerly gusts. So Mike tied a line to the far dock pylon, connected our heavy CQR anchor in the middle and then attached it to the boat. This way, we could pull ourselves off the dock when the south winds were blowing and save our fenders, but other boats could still pass by if they wanted to. It was a pretty genius set up and Mike had it all figured out and ready to go way ahead of the winds coming so there was little to worry about. I decided that since we would probably get some heavy rains (which we didn't), that I should finally re-seal the last two windows that we didn't do when we were in Nova Scotia. These two windows are port lights, which mean they open up and have screens to let airflow in, whereas all the other windows are just for light. I got one done in a day, and the other one the next. They proved a lot more difficult than the regular windows, because there was way more sealant I had to try to pry apart. You would think that they couldn't be leaking with how much sealant was there, but they definitely were. Anyway, it was a good job and now every window is sealed on our boat with sikaflex to keep us dry, except the head, because we need to replace that one, but if it leaks, it drips right into the sink so no real problem.

By the time Saturday came, there was nothing to do but wait for the wind gusts to come. During the day we had the south wind, not as strong as we had thought which was nice. Mike's little setup kept us off the dock the whole time and the surge wasn't too bad. In the afternoon the wind did a full swing to come from the north. We stayed up until 12:30 or so to feel out the storm and see how bad it was going to get. There were some pretty strong blows, and you could feel the boat heel a bit until the lines tightened up. One blow pushed the kayak a little across the foredeck, it was tied up on one end but the other end did a bit of a slide, which sounded so loud down below. Mike went up and tied it down, but that was the worst of it. We both slept well and the next morning, although the air was cool from the north wind, it was a sunny blue sky day. We enjoyed our Sunday and smiled at "surviving our first hurricane" hopefully our last lol. The next day... I can't believe I'm saying it, but we received our self steering unit!!! UPS finally delivered it to us at the marina! We were ecstatic to get it and after so long it just didn't seem real haha. So we opened her up and started looking through everything, and wouldn't you know, we are missing some pieces. Are you kidding me? So the actual unit was all there, although it wasn't made to the right specifications for our boat. The length of the unit is determined by the length of your boat and the height of the transom. We gave the guy our exact plan which has all the dimensions but for whatever reason, the unit was actually a little too long. Mike was able to modify it a bit and make it work. We also ordered a wheel drum adapter, which connects to the steering wheel, instead of using the tiller clamp that comes with the unit (which wasn't in the box either!). We also paid for an offshore kit, which are replacement pieces, in the event that something breaks or is lost at sea. Ya those were missing too. I swear every single thing that could have gone wrong with ordering this unit, has gone wrong. Thankfully Mike is actually a genius when it comes to making these things work and until we get those pieces we will make do with what we got. We've talked to the guy and he's not sure how the pieces were missed being shipped and will send them to us, however we will probably have to get them sent somewhere else since we do not have the time to wait around, nor do we want to be stuck in Sao Miguel any longer. The unit we purchased was a South Atlantic windvane. I'm sure there are great units out there from these guys, but they just moved their business to Argentina and the quality control clearly went out the window with it. I highly recommend you do NOT go with this brand. Spend a little more and get a Windpilot or a Monitor. It will definitely save you loads of stress and aggravation, and the bit extra you pay will be worth it in the end. Anyway, we got what we got. Mike has mounted it on the transom, we have the steering blocks in place and all we have to do is connect the blades (rudder and windvane) and connect the steering lines to the wheel somehow and our self steering will be operational. I read some guys using bicycle tires and even a frying pan to make their own wheel drums so I think we will be able to do it easily.

That has been the main focus for the last week. We have been tied up in this marina for just over 2 weeks which will be depressing when we get the bill haha. However with the hurricane that passed and other issues, we didn't have much choice. Oh well. So while we are waiting to leave, (beginning of November) we will do sea trials with the self steering and make sure everything is ok. We decided to purchase a windcharger for the boat. It will be here next week and it will be our power saviour. We have solar panels, but if it's a cloudy day, we don't get enough charge to run the fridge. With a windcharger, the wind will power it up and we will be able to run our fridge all the time. Almost every cruising vessel has one, some even have two. So as a gift to ourselves, we decided we should just buy one. It will be cheaper to get it here and have it sent here, then waiting to get one in the Caribbean. We ordered a Rutland 914i and out of all the units it has a good charge with a small amount of sound. In total with the charge controller, mounting package and the actual windcharger, it was about $1100 Canadian. Which is really not bad, considering the silent wind brand was €1400. It just means we will have to make a little extra cash in the Caribbean. We've met some really nice people here in the marina. A Canadian couple from Trenton, Ontario that are spending their winter here. They are really nice and super friendly. We had them over for dinner one night, which was nice to have people come over and hang out. Do some hosing again. Plus dinner was absolutely delicious 😋. We also met a really cool Dutch couple. They just left for Madeira, but told us of a beautiful island called Cariacou in the Caribbean that we have to go to. It's in our cruising guide and looks gorgeous, so we will absolutely be making our way there. Last night, it was a bit of a windy night, and we were rocking around a bit. I didn't sleep great, and at one point there was a loud bang and a scrabbling sound. We have a plywood board in that is shorter, instead of the full size washboard to close the cabin. This way we can have some airflow through the night but not have the companionway fully open. Anyway, so the loud bang, I woke up and looked out the bottom gap and could see something that looked like a shoe or flip flop, but with a weird texture on the cockpit floor. I grabbed my phone and put the flashlight on and peeked out the gap again. Well damn, that weird texture was feathers, and then it moved. Holy smokes, there is a bird on the cockpit. It must have crashed into the mast or the back stay and it wasn't leaving. I woke Mike up and he said to just leave it and go back to sleep. So I laid back down and after about 5 minutes I could hear the birds feet scratching along the floor. Ya, no... I woke Mike up again and told him to do something haha. So he got up and slowly pulled the washboard out, I was worried the thing was going to jump into the cabin. So as soon as Mike stepped up, I was holding the board to block it. It was a seagull. Like a good size bird. Mike picked it up, and put the seagull down on the dock, it skittered away and went into the water. I don't know if it broke it's wing or what but it started swimming away. I thanked Mike for being my hero and saving me from the seagull and we went back to sleep. So that's the boat stuff that been happening. I know it's not nearly as exciting as it was a couple months ago, but I promise we will get moving here again eventually. Cape Verde is a beautiful set of islands that I am really looking forward to going to. We have received some bookings for the Caribbean which is great, looking forward to getting more! So, book us for your vacation people!! January is wide open and oh so cold in Canada 😜

Ask a Husband #2: The No Spouse Rule

Inviting or excluding significant others is always a touchy subject. It starts when we are teenagers, waiting all day to hang out with our best friend after school, only to be devastated when he brings his new girlfriend along and you spend the whole day uncomfortably trying to play Halo as they dry hump each other two feet from you in your parents basement. It's like f&k you Steve, I wanted to beat The Maw on legendary today, not spend four hours avoiding eye contact with the boner lump in your sweatpants.

Even into adulthood you run into it from time to time. My wife gets invited to weddings without a plus one every once in a while even though we're married presumably because the couple to be is trying to keep head count under control. If we're being honest in this situation, this is fine with me as I have no interest in attending Janet the HR person's wedding so that I can spend three hours at the weird leftovers table with someones socially awkward work friend Peg, the bride's asthmatic cousin Barry with the lazy eye and sweating condition, and a suit jacket that sits by itself on an empty seat all night because whoever was assigned to that spot did the smart thing and got the hell out of there.

I guess what I'm saying is that in all stages of life, sometimes there is going to be friction over when you do or don't bring along significant others.

That being said, this seems like it is much more commonly going to be a dating conundrum than a married person one. Married couples tend to have integrated into each others respective groups of friends, so it becomes less of an issue as opposed to when you are just dating someone, especially if it is a new relationship. Even so, I get the appeal of the no spouse rule on occasion for everyday social situations. Sometimes you just need a night with your friends minus significant others, it's healthy.

Now, it seems in your particular situation we're looking more at boyfriends and girlfriends as opposed to spouses. When you throw significant others into the mix with a group of friends, especially a 'new' significant other where they don't know anyone besides the person they came with it changes the whole dynamic of the group. Sometimes that's fine. In the sage words given to us by the Spice Girls "If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends". If a significant other is going to be around for a while, they've got to become familiar with the group at some point, otherwise you end up with that friend nobody sees anymore because his new girlfriend or boyfriend is dominating all their time. Still, sometimes you just want to go bowling or something with the old gang.

I don't know any of the people involved in this situation, so I can only speak in the most general of terms and operate on some basic assumptions.

The first basic assumption that I am making is that your friend is pretty much a good guy and not a raging self-centered douche scooter. With that assumption in mind, I don't see the request for the no spouse rule at the first gathering as totally out of the blue. As I mentioned, sometimes it's nice to just hang out with the old gang, and really nobody wants to be the only one at Applebee's who can't order the 2 for $20 because he's by himself. Is it maybe a little selfish to institute the no spouse rule if the rest of the group isn't really down for it? Sure, but I can sympathize with being socially uncomfortable as the odd man out. I feel for the guy, so I can't get too bent out of shape over it.

Now the second get-together is maybe a little harder to justify. To play devil's advocate, I guess I can understand after having been the only single guy in the group and now finally having a boyfriend or girlfriend to bring along he was excited to show them off to his group of friends. It's mildly annoying but really I guess it depends on the fit of this new significant other in to the group. If they turn out to be awesome and get along with everyone, no harm no foul for the most part. If they are an insufferable mule that makes everyone want to slam their hands in a car door so they have an excuse to leave early not so great.

As for how you proceed with this friend, I'd like to introduce you to a philosophy by which I try to live my life. A philosophy that I believe keeps me from being an insufferable piece of garbage in many situations where folks tend to take the aforementioned human garbage route. I always ask myself "Is the aggravation of pressing this issue worth the potential reward, versus just letting it go?"

Let me give you a few examples from my own life of the application of this mantra:

I used one of those photo printing kiosks you see in drug stores or Walmart to print up a few pictures that my wife wanted to frame. On one of the pictures, the printer screwed something up and left a black ink smudge across the center of the photo. I could have gone back to the store, shown the incorrectly printed photo to them, asked for a refund and had the pictures redone. Or, I could eat the $2.14, not have to fight with anybody, and just reprint that picture. I did not consider the reward of maybe $2.14 and some sort of pointless moral justice for my screwed up picture worth the inevitably awful interaction I would have had to have with an employee. I just reprinted the picture.

An additional example: Once something malfunctioned with our cable and took out our TV and internet service. I spent an hour on the phone with customer service troubleshooting before it was determined that a technician was going to need to come out and replace hardware. When it was all said and done, by the time they were able to get someone out to us, we were without TV or internet for three days.

I love my wife dearly, but there is no reward too small for her not to go through any amount of headache in the pursuit of justice. She insisted that I call our service provider and demand a refund for the time we were without cable.

To break that scenario down, I would have started this process by spending a minimum of an hour on the phone, most of it likely listening to hold music as I resisted the urge not to bite through my tongue and bleed to death rather than listen to another second of a synthesizer rendition of "I'm sailing away". Once I finally reached someone I would then have to petulantly demand that I be reimbursed for my inconvenience. I would be making this demand to someone who has likely already had this conversation approximately eighty-seven times today and gives exactly zero fucks. After all of that, presuming that I don't walk away empty handed and get I my reimbursement what have I actually won? If I pay $140 bucks a month for cable, I'm paying roughly $4.60 a day which would come out to a whopping $14 reimbursement for the days we were without service. Thanks, but I'll take not ruining my evening for maybe getting fourteen dollars or maybe getting politely told to go fuck myself by Verizon's customer service associate and have the recording of it immortalized for quality assurance purposes.

Now, apply this principle to this trouble with your friend. You may have a different barometer for your hassle/reward ratio than I do, but were I faced with this situation, at least where it came to the two get-togethers already passed, I would just let it go.

At best it goes well and you have a decent conversation with them about it, but still ends up being a whole thing. You can't get away with just texting them "Hey Ur GF can't hang with us anymore LOL!" and be done with it.

At worst they get offended and defensive and everyone gets dragged into a fight about it. A poorly handled no spouses rule violation helped break up The Beatles, don't let it happen to you and your friends too.

In all reality probably the best thing you can do is let what is done be done and take a proactive approach for future outings. Knowing that this friend has a history not quite getting the memo just realize you've got to be extra clear with them on expectations going forward.

If you do find yourself in a situation where this person is the dissenting voice in the group on if significant others should or should not invited along, avoid terms like "hypocritical" or "rude" even if they may be fitting. If you put someone on the defensive, they often shut down and you get nowhere with them.

Demonstrate that you understand their point of view and offer them your alternative. Try to make your points focused around the group as a whole rather than singling this person out as a problem. If you can win them over to the rest of the group's way of thinking without making him feel like you lectured him or hate his partner's stupid face it'll make life a lot easier for everyone.

If the group is looking for a "no spouse night" let him know that you all still like his significant other and would love to plan something soon for everyone, but that tonight other folks have already worked it out with their own significant others and you'd like to keep to the plan this time.

If its the other way around and he's pouting about significant others tagging along, make it clear that there will be plenty of opportunity to have a "just the gang" night, but it's important to welcome the partners of members of the group into the fold as well.

As I said before, this all operates under the assumption that your friend is not a rabid uppity twit and is capable of being reasonable like an actual person. I don't know him, so maybe he is in fact a giant bag of assholes. If that's the case my advice is the group just tells him to jog on.
