do you think diabolik lovers will ever be localised?
// I can’t give you a concrete answer but I hope that won’t ever happen. ^^”
Making otome games more accessible to the West increased hatred. Some players were genuinely helped by the localizations, but it's such an unpleasant feeling to see so many people from the Western otoge community claiming a game as bad and complaining about how much the love interests and heroines suck when, in the majority of cases, I end up actually enjoying the game + characters?? And I believe that others would agree if only they gave it a try and refused to listen to the popular opinion. It's true that some games received unfavorable reviews from both the West and Japan, demonstrating that they are actually generally bad, but that's really uncommon.
I get that Rejet released the HDB and MB Switch edition for Japanese fans, since PS vita is a dead console, but it saddens me how so many Westerners found out about it like that and wrote a bunch of negative reviews as a result. Those influenced a lot of people to mischaracterize and hate on the characters even after playing the two games themselves, which is honestly such a pity. Although there are several darker localized otome games available, the DL franchise already has a poor reputation and a localization would simply bring more haters than supporters. ;w;

I'd love to resume doing something on this blog. I miss yelling into the internet about stuff but mostly drifted away from otomes, now playing mostly games that don't exactly have any romance in them. I do have a blog for those but it's mostly just me complaining about my gacha pulls once in a blue moon.
I'm still reading a lot of manga though. In the last month I've binged so much of the backlog that was waiting on my shelf. I'm so impressed by how much manga and localisations changed in comparison to when I was starting out diving those 15 years ago into what eventually brought me to otomes.
And also Tumblr changed a lot in recent years.
Though I'd have to rethink a lot about this blog. Maybe return to the roots, which was aromantic reception of romance.
My perspective though also changed a lot over those years. I started this blog shortly after Ikemen Sengoku released in EN. That was 2017. Almost 7 years? Time sure flies.

My Personal Otome Game Route Rankings
Tumblr media
This is mainly for my own entertainment to see if I notice any patterns with my favourite LIs.
Code: Realize
1. Count Saint-Germain
2. Arsene Lupin
3. Abraham Van Helsing
4. Victor Frankenstein
5. Impey Barbicane
It was extremely difficult to put numbers 2-4 in any sort of order and I could have easily favoured a different order. Saint-Germain was my absolute favourite from the minute he opened his eyes on his route and Impey's personality annoyed me greatly so these two found their places quickly. Lupin, Van Helsing and Fran all had a few things I didn't like but I enjoyed their routes from different points of views. This ranking is based on all three games.
Collar x Malice
1. Takeru Sasazuka
2. Aiji Yanagi
3. Kei Okazaki
4. Kageyuki Shiraishi
5. Mineo Enomoto
Again, Sasazuka was number one the minute I heard his voice and Enomoto annoyed me for the same reasons as Impey. Numbers 2-4 were very close competition and again, I could have put them in a different order. I loved Yanagi for the mature love and natural development, Okazaki for his yandere personality and Shiraishi for the plot. This ranking is based on the first game, Unlimited is on my list to play.
Piofiore
1. Yang
2. Henri Lambert
3. Dante Falzone
4. Nicola Francesca
5. Gilbert Redford
6. Orlok
I'm starting to notice a pattern of liking angst and trashy men. This ranking is based on both the first game and episodio 1926. Originally I didn't like Nicola much, but his 1926 is route was brilliant so he jumped up quite a bit. Orlok is a sweetie, but I guess I prefer my LIs a bit more mature. Yang and Henri were the crazy ones and I loved that, absolutely amazing characters. Yang's episodio 1926 route was brilliant. Also an honorary mention of Gilbert's, Oliver's and Orlok's potato conversation. I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe.
Cupid Parasite
1. Jupiter / Peter Flage
2. Raul Aconite
3. Ryuki F. Keisaiin
4. Shelby Snail
5. Allan Melville
6. Gill Lovecraft
This ranking is based on the first game (I believe there is a fandisc which hasn't been localised?). This game threw me for a loop because I ended up liking the guys I least expected to. When I started the game, I was interested in Allan and Shelby the most and hated Ryuki and Raul. But all went completely differently than I thought it would. Gill also made my list of most annoying LIs, I couldn't stand him.
Cafe Enchante
1. Kaoru Rindo
2. Misyr Rex
3. Ignis Carbunculus
4. Il Fado de Rie
5. Canus Espada
This was a difficult situation because I loved Misyr but hated the ending so much. I'm currently working on fixing it with a fanfic haha. Kaoru was a favourite with his mature personality and looks (might be because I turn 30 this year). Ignis had gore with a sweet ending and I loved it. I enjoyed Il's route but he was a bit too much of a cry baby for me. Canus had a lovely personality, but I couldn't quite warm up to him having no head.
Olympia Soiree
1. Yosuga
2. Riku
3. Akaza
4. Kuroba
5. Tokisada
6. Himuka
Seems like the crazy one is my favourite again. I love Yosuga and his route so much that I have played it at least five times. The dark themes of his route really appealed to me. I liked Riku for his character development and Akaza for the plot and his upstanding nature. Kuroba was interesting because of the social issues. I wasn't overly keen on Tokisada because of his cutesy demeanor, although it did get better towards the end of his route. Himuka just wasn't for me at all. He didn't really annoy me, but I couldn't form any connection.

Even if TEMPEST
Tumblr media
It’s been a little while I haven’t played an otome ;p and I’m very satisfied with this one, it’s clearly the kind of otome I’m looking for, aka, an otome where the main story is well written and whose romance is not the central point of it. Also there was an interesting way to connect each routes (it’s not just you start the story again and pick a new path) so that they become one with the story ; it was smart and kept the immersion with the main story.
Also, it’s one of the rare otome where I enjoyed every characters and routes (not that all of them are flawless but they were nice) <3
————
To resume my thoughts :
❤ An otome with a very good story and whose plot doesn't just revolve around romance. A story full of drama and mystery and with its tenderest moments ❤ Routes connected to each other and whose sequence enriches the development of the story. ❤ An amazing MC!! She is neither the damsel in distress for the LIs, nor their savior (like their personal psychiatrist as in many other otomes :p), she is on equal footing with them, carrying strengths and weaknesses. ❤ Very good casting for each characters and I really liked their design too! ❤ The OST is grandiose and memorable
+/- The game surprised me to have an investigation/judgment phase where you really have to object facts with evidence. But it wasn't always easy for me to really know which answer option to choose...(kinda confusing sometimes)
✖ The biggest problem with this game is that it crashes a lot (for unknown reason) ==“ I checked and apparently, many players had the same. It forces you to save a lot and it breaks the immersion a bit. The game definitely needs a fixing patch! ✖ It will always be a negative point for me (even though it’s common in this type of game), but the heroine is not dubbed and she deserves it so much!!! >< ✖ Poor Lucien doesn’t have his own proper route, I mean, contrary to the other LI, his route is a mix of his own development with the MC but also the conclusion of the story with the resolution of each plot. And because of that, he will have less intimate moments with the MC so at the end, his romance with her feels either forced or unrequited...baby Lucien deserved more than that (;v;) ✖ It feels at the end that the writers wanted to tell too many things because we are left with unresolved details...that they will try to explain to us in a kind of "true end" in the form of Q&A... and it's a bit dumb ^^”
————
I finished it in about 15h that is pretty decent for this genre. Also the english localisation was very good, they only changed a name of a charac compared to the original but that’s not really a bother. If you enjoy otome like Taisho x Alice or the Psychedelica series, where the main story is the center of the game, you’ll definitely enjoy this one <3

Sitting here looking through otome fanart and thinking happy thoughts. Realised I actually really like all of the pairings in Hakuoki with Chizuru and don't have a particular dislike among them (except that Sannan and Yamazaki's stories didn't feel quite as fleshed out as they could've been; the actual interactions and dynamics of their stories were fine). This is unusual, because there's usually at least one LI that I'm kind of lukewarm about or actively dislike in the games I've played so far (Gill in Cupid Parasite, Frankenstein in Code:Realize, Ines in Steam Prison, to name a few).
I'm wondering if this is a bias based on Hakuoki having been my First Real Otome game (that is, not a poorly translated and chopped up mobile localisation) or something like that, actually. Or if the storytelling was just that good for the series? There's nobody in the cast of LI's that in particular makes me feel confused, angry or annoyed that they end up with Chizuru. They all somehow fit by the end of the route, and they all have at least one scene that really touched me on some level.

KNOCKOUTS: I'm in Love with the Villainess (2020 - ?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm in Love with the Villainess (or I Favor the Villainess) is an isekai light novel series by Inori, adapted to manga by Aono Shimo.
Ordinary office worker Rei Oohashi wakes up one day to find herself as Rae Taylor, the heroine of her favorite otome game, Revolution. Surrounded by attractive men all vying for her attention would be any maiden's dream—but that is not the case for Rae! None of them can hold a candle to the villainess, Claire François, whose blonde, drill-shaped ringlets only accentuate her haughty irresistible charm. In the original story, Claire harasses and bullies the heroine, which drives the latter closer to the male love interests. But Rae has no intention of pursuing any of the men; her heart is set on Claire herself! Unused to being on the receiving end of affection, Claire is left at the mercy of Rae's endless teasing. With the power of true love, can Rae successfully convey her heartfelt feelings to the villainess? - MAL
ENG localised by Seven Seas, JP available on Book Walker.
CWs under the cut. General severity ranking: mild to moderate.
no outright sex (yet - still ongoing), but there are some suggestive scenes iirc.
violence <- there's not much actual bloody violence or any gore (so far) but there's a decent amount of fantasy violence. like... nothing beyond what you'd expect from a relatively mild shounen.
incestuous relationship in the supporting cast, not portrayed as healthy/romantic.
homophobia <- mostly in backtories. mentioned regarding one side character & delves protag's experiences w homophobia in ch33.
SA <- alluded to that one character sexually harassed another
on the topic of sexual harassment, it's worth mentioning that (especially at the beginning) rei's fawning over claire could be construed as harassment.
also worth mentioning that, while the character she's living the life of is part of the school, rei was an office worker before getting isekaied. this is never really relevant to how she's characterised or even really drawn attention to, but best to give a heads up in case that's a hard no.
HEADS UP: i'm up to date with this, but my brain left my skull trying to remember any plot details so the above is very reliant on the submitted warnings and things mentioned in the story graph reviews. as usual, if i'm missing anything or if anything here is inaccurate, please let me know.

Have a happy holidays!
Otomate and Rejet’s games should’ve never have been localised in the first place and the fact that so many ppl in the fandom praise these games is fucking disturbing. So many good potential for romantic stories is ruined because all the writers are gross ass weebs who think being a predator or a stalker is the hottest thing but HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST THE MC HAVE A LESBIAN ROUTE

Diabolik Lovers x Cupid Parasite Crossover AU
Some quick notes before we start: For anyone not in the know, Cupid Parasite is an otome game that was localised in late 2021 and revolves around the concept of a heroine who works at a matchmaking service. The heroine is tasked with finding matches for the so-called “Parasite 5”, a group of 5 men who have proven so impossible to match that everyone else has given up on them. There’s also a whole bunch of Greek mythology mixed in (the heroine is literally cupid) but I won’t go into too much detail with that because spoilers.
The game is kind of wild but I absolutely love it so… I wrote a crossover with DL. You don’t have to have played the game in order for this to make sense, nor does this post contain any spoilers for Cupid Parasite beyond the synopsis I’ve included above. I originally intended to write this introductory post in prose but unfortunately I never managed to find the time so I’ve decided just post my planning notes as is.
Plan:
6 S boys are all human because there is no sensible way I can work vampires into this AU
-Ages:
Shu - 24
Reiji - 23
Laito, Kanato, Ayato -21
Subaru - 19
Reader works as a bridal advisor at the most popular matchmaking company in Kaminashi town(?), keep cupid corp name? Rename to something like aphrodite agency?
Reader is the top bridal advisor after working there for just 2 years.
The agency has been tasked by Karl to find matches for his sons to “help to better secure their futures and maintain the family image”. However the boys have proven unmatchable and been nicknamed the parasite 6:
Shuu - Lazy Parasite
Reiji - Strict Parasite (?)
Ayato - Oresama Parasite
Laito - Perverted (?) Parasite
Kanato - Unstable Parasite
Subaru - Tsundere (or Violent) Parasite
Thus reader gets tasked with matching them.
Fic plan:
Quick intro to reader and agency
First meeting with Sakamaki brothers -> interviews
Shuu - sleeps and then won’t stand to leave the office
Reiji - Manages to get Shuu out of the office, seems okay (currently doing a PhD in chemistry i.e. life sorted? lmao) then nitpicks reader, critiquing everything from their posture to their speech patterns
Ayato - makes unrealistic demands (mainly with regards to body type)
Kanato - says that the girl has to be able to bake but won’t be forgiven if she eats his sweets. Talks to Teddy and freaks reader out. Then says that the girl should look cute when she cries in fear. Reader is AFRAID
Laito - Flirts with the reader and is generally deplorable
Subaru - Earns brownie points by kicking Laito out of reader’s office and reader sympathizes that he’s young to be looking to get married but tries to comfort him on the fact. Thinks that they might actually be able to help him but then he punches the wall after he leaves and reader is forced to reevaluate.
Reader laments how difficult the task will be, goes home to find Karl waiting for them. They ask why he really wants to get his sons married and he simply says it suits his purposes. He then makes a comment about how easy it is to convince a landlord not to rent to someone, even one who has a trustworthy record. He goes on to say that in fact, someone with enough influence may just be able to stop a person from being able to rent in this city altogether and that were that to happen, the individual in question might be left with no other option than to marry into money, as it were.
The reader asks if that was a threat, and Karl (maybe he goes by Tougo here?) replies that it’s nothing so serious, just that if they fail in their job then he may have to resort to other means of getting his sons hitched and then comments that the reader themselves is unmarried and close enough in age. Karl leaves and reader realizes that they have to find matches for the Sakamaki bros or else they’re going to be forced into marrying one of them.
Some extra notes:
Reader’s gender here is up to you
There are no vampires in this AU, yes I know it’s disappointing, but if the reader is supposed to be matchmaking the Sakamaki brothers, I needed them to be, you know, not literal murderers.
The boys are not highschool age here because 1) the idea of highschoolers being forced to use a matching service makes me VERY uncomfortable, so the boys ages are the same/close to those of the love interests in Cupid Parasite and 2) while we’re not given their actual ages in canon, we know for a fact they’re all older than the ages listed for them in their profiles anyway.

I wish for all non-Japanese people to stop acting like otome game experts when they know nothing about them to begin with. Main hero has always been an official term in Japan, that’s an official role for a character and it’s always the English or Spanish fandoms that keep denying it not only in Ayato’s case. That’s like saying that all heroines are self-inserts. As you said you can use them as self-insert but that doesn’t erase the fact they’re still their own character with their own confirmed role in the story. The other guys are still important but they’re just not connected to the story or heroine as the main hero is. The creator just has a preference regarding that character and couple, why would this affect the player in any way? And we still wonder why we don’t get a localisation hah.
// FACTS! Japanese fans will always know better than Western ones, because otome games are made for them. The West and Japan have very different mindsets when it comes to certain things, therefore what Japan finds good, can be seen as bad in the West and vice versa. However, I'd rather trust the word of Japanese fans because, after all, otome games are aimed at them, and if they truly dislike something, it means that thing failed; it couldn't meet their expectations or be to their liking, and their liking is considered the most important because they're the ✨target audience✨
Unfortunately, teaching an entire fandom about otoge pop-culture is impossible; nobody is popular or convincing enough to truly open everyone's eyes, but whatever.
Main hero is and will always be an official term. Those are facts, lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for Ayato, he is seen as the main hero by Rejet and Japanese audience, that’s what matters the most. When he was asked if his opinion about Ayato changed before and after the anime, even his VA said “no”, because, according to him, Ayato is a character that can easily be the core of the story (主軸). In the least biased way, that's a true statement, given that he got that main character charisma and energy, plus background.
From my perspective, he got an amazing world building, and whoever thought of that is a very clever person (or people, if there were more)! I like how everything makes sense, it's a bit weird how they only released YB manga recently but at least it solved a "mystery".
We can see in the last YB chapter how he became addicted after eating that fig. "Addicted" is literally the name of his character song, and its lyrics perfectly describe the entire fig situation (translation by silvermoon249).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last but not least, I have such a love-hate relationship with this official short story (translation by Koiiro) because 1. that’s the best confession Yui has ever made and 2. it sounds kinda creepy?? The atmosphere was quite disturbing; Yui didn't even seem embarrassed, which is unusual for her, and even Ayato found the situation strange. It has a strong "everything is always connected" vibe to it…?
Welp guys, don't be sad if you haven't found your soulmate yet. Ayato had to wait hundreds of years for it. xD
Tumblr media
I truthfully agree with the part about localization. It's not like DL doesn't get one due to the themes presented there, because there are localized otome games with far darker themes, but I feel like the English fandom really doesn't deserve one (I'm not referring to everyone, there are some genuinely kind and calm people). They complain about everything Rejet releases, they are petty and too salty, they abet, and they have no idea how the otome game world works... To summarize, they aren’t able to appreciate anything. As a result, DL should be limited to the Japanese audience, who are far more understanding and supportive.
