Kui Mulang headcanons?
ah, this question
STILL A HUGE BELIEVER IN HIM LOVING DISCO
like disco is shiny, he's shiny, it's a good match.
But other than that
Five bucks says you could beat him with a head scratch, just right behind the ears and he'll go down like a sack of bricks.
He's probably also a theater kid and will spring his heartbreaking story on just about anyone in ear shot. Like you let you guard down and boom wolf dude's there trauma dumping.
Going with the theater kid thing he's probably into Shakespeare and totally kins Romeo and Juliet.
For some reason he seems like a caramel guy, like idk why but I feel like he'd like caramel.
I also think he's really smart when it comes to jewelry, like he can tell what's fake or expensive and he can tell you you what'll go good with what along with the names of plenty of jewels.
He really leans in to the yellow thing but purple is his second favorite color because it matches his eye (which I also headcanon to be purple) .
I think he actually enjoyed being a demon a whole lot more then being a celestial because being a demon gave him a lot more freedom, freedom most celestials don't have.
UHHH, yeah! hope u enjoyed!!

Mini theory
Dragon Princess of the West and mei
I just realized something
in Court of the Yellow Robed Demon
Ao Lie mentioned to Mei that her impulsiveness reminded him of his sister
What suggests that mei is similar in personality to ao lie's sister?
the fact that ao lie mentions her sister could indicate that she could appear in the next few seasons and maybe be important to mei's character arc
or maybe i'm just over analyzing

Do you think SWK would go platonic-yandere Dad mode on MK in the modern times? Trying to get him to move to the mountain instead of living/working for Pigsy, monopolizing his time with "training" so he can't hang out with Mei and all that
(i don't really do general lmk asks, so im going to answer this as if it were for the lmk version of bad end. it's gonna get x reader type shippy.)
let's say MK is bad ends adopted son in the modern bad end au, where swk never went on the journey and is one of the major villains (despite this he's surprisingly chill for most of the show? even helping MK and his friends occasionally. though the gang doesn't know that swk is mks adopted dad until later)
so, in this version of the universe, macaque has sorta taken the role of normal wukong, as in he went on the journey and is training MK in secret. he's also protecting the reader here, who's a reincarnation of the reader from the journey, i.e. target numero uno for swk for...reasons. reader is also sorta a mother figure for MK.)
i think, as MK's adopted dad, villain swk would be the strict/fun/scary type of parent. he loves his kid and wants him to be happy, but also won't allow himself to be disrespected and can be harsh. knowing that, the fact that MK's constant begging to "see the outside world" actually worked is a miracle.
MK makes all his friends and convinces his dad to let him stay with the nice shopkeep who gave him a job. swk begrudgingly agrees, thinking that knowing how the modern mortal world works would be good for him.
however, after a few years of this, swk notices that his son is spending more time in the city than with him on the mountain. he decides to visit his son at work to surprise him with a...
...mandatory home visit.
the monkey king disguises himself, knowing that looking like the notorious villain he is would attract too much attention. his deeds have left such an impression that people would still panic at the sight of him even all these centuries later, after all.
when he arrives at the noodle shop, he can't help but sneer at it. this is the place that MK gets so excited about? that he likes enough to spend hours talking about during training? hmf. at least he'll get to meet these "friends" that his son cares so much for. he's particularly interested in–
the king freezes upon entry to the noodle shop.
there, manning the register. she looks exactly the same as when he lost her, though her traveling robes have been exchanged for a shirt bearing the shops logo, and jeans, a yellow hoodie tied around her waist...
it's her.
reader. that insufferable, annoying, wonderful, beautiful, achingly gentle mortal from so long ago. the one who saw the best in him despite it all, the one he had intended to marry. the one that that traitor macaque hid from him so that she could live and die and move on without him.
she's here, reincarnated. it's got to be her. his eyes of truth can't lie, and this mortals' aura is the same as hers. she looks over at him and he's paralyzed for a moment. even her eyes are the same color.
there's a slight pinch in her brow as she gazes at him. does she recognize him after all this time, he wonders, even with the disguise? he allows himself to hope for a second... but the look passes and the customer-service smile easily takes its place on her lips.
"Hello there! What would you like?" reader says.
For you to come home with me, is wukong's first thought.
"Hey," he says instead, somewhat nervous smile on his face. it's been a while since he's interacted with regular people (that weren't cowering in fear).
"Is MK here? I've come to check up on him,"
"I'm his dad, by the way." he quickly tacks on, somewhat bashfully.
"The kid's not here," the chef and presumed owner of the shop cuts in gruffly. the pig demon is scrutinizing him, suspicion written all over his face. "He's makin' deliveries."
huh, the king thinks. one reincarnation so close to another isn't uncommon, but it's still odd to see two of the monks' traveling companions all these centuries later. especially considering the fact that these two didn't get along that well, if he recalls. but, on a more important note-
"Ah, alright then! Perhaps I'll just have some noodles while I wait. Do you know when he'll be back?" wukong attempts to sound calm, but the fact that he doesn't get to see MK right now is grating on him. that and the unease he can sense in reader at his presence.
"Well, who knows with MK. He's a good kid, but he has a tough time focusing on certain tasks," reader says, some of her anxiety fading at the chance to talk about her work buddy. "He tries his best, though."
"Yeah?" wukong smiles at reader. he can see the color in her cheeks. he knows she likes his human form, even if she's wary of him. "Y'know, he's told me about you. You're Reader, right?"
she nods, and the nervous energy flowing off of her fades a little. he can tell she's still unsure if he's actually MK's dad. he supposes he did just...walk in and say it with no way to back it up. the distrust and uncertainty radiating off the pig demon as he subtly watches the conversation is palpable.
wukong watches as reader turns at the chef's call, taking the bowl of noodles carefully and setting it in front of him.
"Here you are," reader says, setting chopsticks down beside the bowl. the king thanks her before digging in. "If you'll excuse me a moment."
though he appears occupied with his meal, wukong takes note of reader saying something in a low voice to the pig demon. he nods, and reader heads out a back door. she pulls her phone out of her pocket as she goes.
hmf. probably to call MK and ask if the (incredibly handsome) stranger claiming to be his dad is really who he says he is. wukong can imagine the way his son will stutter and panic at the fact that he decided to come here instead of one of their regular meet up points.
sun wukong can't help but be glad he did, as he uses his gold vision to watch his little wayward soulmate pace in the alleyway outside.
now that he knows that she's here, he gets the feeling he'll be spending a lot more time in the city. after all, it was because of his lack of vigilance that she taken from him the first time...
...
he won't let her get away again.

Legend VS LMK Characters:
Kui Mulang (LMK):
Tumblr media
[Kaui Mulang, Guard of the Celestial Court, Mansion of the White Tiger, Devourer of Earthly Souls]
Korean: Gyumokrang Mandarin: The Wood Wolf of Legs
Former Celestial Guard turned Yellow-Robed Demon.
After Falling in Love with Jade Maiden and having their love rejected by the Celestial Realm. He gave up their immortality and he awaited for her to reincarnate. As he waits to make sure he will be there to see her he consumes mortal lives to longavit his own.
The 28 Mansions mentioned by him are part of the Chinese constellation system as to why there is so much star imagery is in his castle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kui Mulang (Ledgend):
Tumblr media
Kui Mulang originated from the ancient Chinese worship of the constellations, a spiritual practice that combines Chinese mythology and astronomy. He is considered to be one of the 28 Mansions, which are Chinese constellations. These are the same as those studied in Western astrology. He appears in Chinese mythology literate notably the JTTW & Fengshen Yanyi.
He is linked to a historical figure called Ma Wu, a general who hailed from the town of Huyang in Tanghe, located in the Henan province.
Tumblr media
Kui Mulang is associated with the constellation Andromeda, which appears in the sky in the middle of November. In this constellation is Kui Xiu, described as the "four-legged fish palace" of Heshansu (和善宿) because its shape is similar to a fish. Another constellation, the White Tiger, is also associated with this cluster of stars.
Tumblr media
According to the novel Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi), Kui Mulang was originally named Li Xiong. After he died in the Battle of the Ten Thousand Immortals, Jiang Ziya deified him as the Wood Wolf of Legs, one of the twenty-eight stars.
Tumblr media
In JTTW
Kui Mulang appears as a demon named Yellow Robe Demon . He lives the Moon Waves Cave on Bowl Mountain in the Kingdom of Baoxiang. In his past, the Yellow Robe Demon falls in love with the Jade Maiden in Heaven and decides to elope with her. He becomes a demon lord and the maiden is reincarnated from a goddess to a human who is named Baihuaxiu . She is the third princess of the Kingdom of Baoxiang. The demon then kidnaps the princess, though she has no memory of her existence as a Jade Maiden. He marries her and the couple has two children. Sun Wukong manages to defeat the demon, which mysteriously vanishes after his defeat. Wukong then seeks help from Heaven to track down the demon and learn his true identity. The Jade Emperor discovers that one of the 28 Mansions is missing, so he orders the remaining 27 to subdue the demon. The demon is revealed to be a disguised as Revatī, the Wood Wolf of Legs, a star deity in the heavenly court, and one of the 28 Mansions. The Wood Wolf is then subdued and brought back to Heaven. As punishment, he is ordered to become a furnace keeper under Taishang Laojun.
Jade Maiden:
Considering she is a huge part of Kui Mulang's life I thought maybe also some info about her as well.
Tumblr media
[ Yunü / Jade Girl or Jade Maiden]
Yunü is a common designation for a beautiful woman or, in Daoism, for a fairy or immortal
A Taoist deity or goddess in Chinese mythology and Chinese traditional religion who, along with her male counterpart Jintong (Golden Boy), are favored servants of the Jade Emperor and Zhenwudadi.
They are also believed to serve as guides in the underworld and the protectors of houses and temples. Some of the Golden Boy and Jade Girl pair could be found on some graves at Bukit Brown Cemetery as they are believed to serve as guides in the Spirit World or the Underworld.
During the spring festival, pictures featuring the two can be found on the doors of many households.
This couple helps virtuous souls over a golden bridge to paradise and helps souls whose good deeds outweighed the bad, over a silver bridge to paradise. Therefore by erecting the Golden Boy and Jade Maiden by the grave of the deceased, living family members hope that the deceased will not venture into the courts of hell but instead lead their afterlife in paradise. Yunü and Jintong have appeared in several stories since the Song and Yuan dynasties and have become important figures in Chinese mythology.
There are several mountain peaks bearing her name.
In Journey to the West, Yunü is a servant maid of the Jade Emperor in Heaven. She falls in love with a star god called Kui Mulang and decides to elope with him. However, she doesn't want to ruin Heaven's pureness, so she decides to reincarnate as a human. She enters the human world as Baihuaxiu, the third princess of the Kingdom of Baoxiang.
In Other Literature:
Specific examples are the southern opera version of the legend, Jintong and Yunü, In this context, Yunü is called Longnü and Jintong is called Shancai Tongzi. According to the Shenyijing, Yunü and her companions loved to play touhu, a Chinese game in which arrows or darts are thrown into a vase. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, she and Jintong seek enlightenment and are acolytes of Guan Yin. In this context, Yunü is called Longnü and Jintong is called Shancai Tongzi. Some folktales say that Xue Dingshan and Fan Lihua were originally the Golden Boy and Jade Girl. The Jade Emperor was furious with them and wanted to punish them for breaking the celestial utensils. Fortunately, the Old Man of the South Pole begged for their mercy and was demoted to the mortal world. In the Hanyi ji play, the protagonists Qi Liang and Meng Jiang are reincarnations of Jintong and Yunü. In most popular versions of The Butterfly Lovers, the protagonists Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai are human reincarnations of Jintong and Yunü who are expelled from Heaven Court by Guanyin or the Jade Emperor for their sin and forced to live as a thwarted couple for three or seven generations before being reunited and restored to their original status.
Thoughts:
Yunü has a lot of love and being kicked/leaving heaven tales.
But did love she was more than just known for this story alone.
The JTTW and LMK versions of Kui Mulang are not too different. However, in the retelling of their love tale he only mentioned himself ridding them of their immortality it almost sounded like in that tale she might have had second thoughts and he did it by force. But I hope not but we can never know because the LMK changed a lot of the characters and tweaked some backstories.
I think the real change in the LMK is that Kui Mulang captured Ao Lie before the JTTW. From the way he talked about the Jade Maiden, she had not been reincarnated or at least he had not captured her yet. For Ao Lie It had to be after his banishment of course because he talked about his powers causing damage he felt bad for aka when he burned his dad's stuff.
Well, I hope you, readers enjoyed:)

I read your azure lion and Wukong fic. You have my whole heart. I fell in love with the ship even if shadowpeach is still my main.
I was wondering, because Wukong has to be oblivious to not see what he does to people, if you would ever be willing to write azure and Macaque competing for affection from Wukong.
Spoilers for LMK Season 4!
This was the life.
“Welcome, viewers, to a shadow play!” Macaque spread his arms to oohs and ahhs from the crowd. He had no idea what village this was, but it didn’t really matter. They were all the same, with the same faces. As Macaque launched into his intro, explaining the tale that would be told, his eyes scanned the crowd.
There were lots of humans, but he saw a few demons here and there. One of them made him pause. He looked to be a lion demon dressed in fine white and gold robes, but his purple eyes weren’t looking at the stage. Next to him, a person straightened, and Macaque’s heart went boom.
This wasn't just another face.
It was another monkey.
He was dressed in soft yellow and touches of blue, the color complimenting his gold fur. His gold eyes, like his companion, weren’t focused on the stage. Instead, he was helping a few kids get on his shoulders and arms, holding them up to see the stage better. He laughed and the sound echoed in Macaque’s ears.
Like liquid sunshine.
A loud “Hey, what’s the hold up!” made Macaque snap back to his narration. However, he couldn’t help it. His eyes lingered on the gold monkey, happily whispering to the lion. The taller demon chuckled, pulling him close. The touch seemed rather friendly and, the moment he saw it, Macaque's heart twinged with an unfamiliar emotion.
The curtains closed on the sight before he could think about it.
Macaque took a deep breath before he hopped off the stage, his clones setting into motion. Well, hopefully, the play would do its thing.
And he would get to talk to that monkey.
-_-
“Did you enjoy the shadow play?”
“Yeah!” Wukong’s grip on his arm was warm and Azure was happy to let it linger. “You were right, that was pretty fun.” He paused to let his smile grow bigger. “I think those kids really liked it.”
Ah, yes. Just another reminder of how wonderful a person his beloved was. Taking him to a shadow play, among humans, hadn’t exactly been Azure’s top idea. But Peng had suggested it as a date and Azure couldn’t help but admit he was right, especially when Wukong noticed the kids unable to see. “I think they were more impressed by you,” he said.
Wukong blew a raspberry, even as his tail began to swish back and forth eagerly. “Aw, what? Those puppets were way cooler!”
“I’m glad you enjoyed them.”
The two stopped as a figure appeared, as if he had been waiting for them. Azure opened his mouth to say something, but the narrator stepped closer to Wukong. And then, before Azure could blink, he grabbed Wukong’s hand and pressed a kiss to the back. Wukong’s entire body stiffened as his eyes went wide. “It’s truly a joy when my art is seen by lovely patrons like you.”
“Oh, uh, thanks!” Wukong sounded like he wasn’t sure how to react. “You did a wonderful job.”
The narrator leaned back before gripping the hood and pulling it down. Dark fur revealed itself as a monkey stared at Wukong. An adoring smile filled his face. “I hope to see you at another one, then…”
His date blinked. “Sun Wukong.” he said, softly. Something squeezed in Azure’s chest at the sight.
The narrator chuckled. “It fits you.”
Without another word, he was gone.

People consistently forgetting Ao Lie is both sad but also something I very much e joy because it feeds into the crouching koron hidden badass trope that just oozes Ao Lie's entire character! Out of all the Pilgrims, Ao Lie is probably the only one who could truly take Wukong, the eldest and strongest, in a fight. And I'm here for it!
Ao Lie's a very good method actor; and his current role is Horse.
But yeah in a one-to-one spar, I can envision Ao Lie unexpectedly equalling or even winning in a fight with Sun Wukong.
The reason being is that Ao Lie in the novel represents the philsophy of the "Will Horse" that has to work with the "Mind Monkey" in order for both to work in harmony. One without the other is aimless - hence why MK and Mei in the LMK series are besties, they represent this balance of Will and Mind. Also why SWK is constantly associated with horses throughout the lore.
In Wukong's absense in the Yellow-Robed Demon chapter; Bai Longma deliberately breaks character to help save his friends - showing off that Ao Lie is able to transform and trick on par with Wukong.
My fave interpetation of Ao Lie is ofc "Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass"; to many he's a weird, mindless dragon-horse without much goals other than to say "sorry for eating your horse". But he's immensely perceptive and physically powerful, he just has very strong willpower. He knows that people underestimate him for being "a little odd" and he's fine with that - makes it easier for him to form a plan of action or a way to help his friends.
Its also why in even in an unfair fight, Kui Mulang freaking lost despite being a celestial star wood-wolf;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can't defeat Will.

Some of Ao Lie bonding with Long Xiaojiao (Mei) in LMK AU:
Xiaojiao (Mei) as a kid making flower crowns and other little crafts for Ao Lie, but he’s unable to hold them without them phasing through him. He appreciates them all the same.
Long Xiaojiao: I made you a drawing!
*she holds it up to show him*
Ao Lie: *smiles softly* Thank you, Mei *he reaches out and gently ruffles her hair* it’s a lovely drawing.
Little Mei catching bugs and showing them to Ao Lie. She reads him books about various types of butterflies, beetles, and whatever other books she can find about them.
Long Xiaojiao: This is a “giant Chinese stick insect” the longest known stick insect! *she shows him a picture of it from the book*
Ao Lie: Interesting, and what’s this one. *he points to a picture of another bug*
Long Xiaojiao: Oh, that’s a Asian long-horned beetle! *continues to tell him about the bugs in the book*
Ao Lie telling Mei stories about his adventures during his life. She asks him a lot of questions, particularly about any battles he fought and the dangers he faced.
Long Xiaojiao: Can you tell about the time you fought the celestial guard who became a yellow-robed demon again?
Ao Lie: *hums and smiles at her* I’ve told you that one over a hundred times now?
Long Xiaojiao: *nudges his side with her elbow* Come on, just tell me about how you bravely fought him off! One dragon against the fierce and vicious demon who had you imprisoned! The odds against you as he attempted to take your soul!
Ao Lie: *chuckles* Well, alright.
*he proceeds to retell her the story*

LMK Season 4 spoilers
Ok so knowing that Princess Iron Fan was a celestial being really explains why, despite both being referred to as demons, she and Red Son look so human-like.
I guess goddess genes are more powerful than bull genes.
Also I can't help but remember that scene in the original JJTW where Yellow Robe and Hunderd Flower Shame's half demon children were killed and it wasn't really considered a bad thing.
Clearly that's not how the story went down in LMK but it does make me wonder if A, Red Son knew (is that how he knew how to transport them to the celestial realm?) and B, if there is a prejudice kids like him amongst either heaven or demon kind. Seems like there would be.
