Le Père Gaschon est l’enfant de l’histoire.
Père Gaschon is a child of history.
Charlemagne introduced what was to become feudalism under the dual authority of his crown and the Church. Land was unified in its ownership and shared between the nobility and the church at local and regional levels. The land was worked and tilled by peasants, most of whom were serfs. They were tied to the land and could not travel or move without a permit. But the Benedictines (or black monks) were known as the engineers of feudalism because they controlled most of the libraries inherited from the Roman Empire, and as such were able to unify the legal basis of this land ownership and the status of the population into three orders: the nobility, whose role was to maintain peace and order, and protect the various territories; the secular or monastic clergy, who ensured the spiritual and ritual well-being of society; the rest of society divided between serfs working the land and vilains doing other tasks such as all the trades necessary for the expansion of this society (trade and various services).
He never broke this link with the ten centuries since Charlemagne leading to a future beyond the French Revolution.

Here at the AH Club, we are thinking of sharing a bit more of our favorite French roads we have experienced in the past years. Because beside drinking red wine and eating frogs legs, driving is our favorite weekend activity. So let’s begin with this one we did 3 days ago: the D36. Starting from Mont Dore, here is the really fun part between Compains and Ardes. It goes on a quite fast road through a pine forest and then, superb hilly landscapes looking like Mongolia steppes. Then going alongside a river in the Gorges de Rentières, this is the most fun part of the D36, particularly under a heavy rain 🤌🏻💦 Then, the village of Ardes is another good starting point for new super fun roads around, mostly thinking of those in the Livradois-Forez park. Bienvenue sur le blog de la fashion week de cunlhat !
Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas trop, la fashion week c'est une semaine durant laquelle les styles et maisons de coutures présentent leurs dernières collections lors de défilés de mode. Il existe la fashion week de Paris, Milan, Londres, New york ... mais pas encore celle de cunlhat ! Pourtant la rumeur court qu'on est une grande capitale du style en Livradois Forez ... Il est temps de montrer au monde de quoi nous sommes capables !
Et le meilleur moment pour organiser ça me semble ... au mois de novembre ! C'est le brouillard qui tombe, la dépression qui guette, et le calendrier vidé de toute joie de vivre ... alors il y a de la place pour les paillettes et l’inutile ! Bon après, rassurons-nous, je parle de novembre 2024 pour cette première édition, bien sur !
Il y aura de la place pour tout le monde : mannequins (et pas forcément tailles mannequins), bricoleuses, couturiers, teinturières, sérigraphieurs, dessinatrices, brodeurs, maquilleurs, danseuses, coiffeurs, chapelières, bijoutiers, mais aussi journalistes mode, photographes, musiciennes, théatreux, constructrices de décors, créateurs lumières, relations presse, gestion des sosies de VIP, et plein d'autres trucs que j'imagine pas encore ! Et puis bien sur de quoi manger, boire, danser, et fêter ensuite !
On pourrait imager de se réunir en Maisons (de couture !) qui proposerait chacune son défilé. On est pas obligé de savoir faire de la couture ou de la création, on peut aussi présenter des habits qu'on ne mets jamais, se trouver une thématique (les superpositions par exemple), ou détourner des trucs improbables ... ou pas. C'est libre !
On pourrait faire par exemple trois résidences d'une semaine, étalées dans l'année pour commencer à coudre / fabriquer / teindre / broder / dessiner / peindre / coller ...
On installe le matos quelque part, et on y vient quand on veut, on en repart pareil, c'est juste pour se motiver ensemble et avoir du soutien si on bloque sur quelque chose. Lancer la dynamique !
Et puis bien sur, ce projet ne se fera que si on est assez nombreux.ses à l'organiser, alors si vous êtes intéressé.e.s n'hésitez pas manifester votre intérêt par mail, qu'on fasse un premier temps d'échange ! Et parler de tout ça à celleux que vous auriez envie d'inviter ...

TOMBE LA NEIGE…. ...Et pas seulement . En cette courte nuit de Janvier, pendant laquelle le sommeil s'est fait la malle, en attendant son retour, je reçois comme un appel du grand large. Une nostalgie de mes amours anciens vient gratter à la porte de mes souvenirs Il est là, bien présent, ce vieux Ronnie DREW, interprétant « the irish rover. » ou pour vous les inconditionnels de la langue de Molière, « le vagabond Irlandais ». Soit dit en passant, je plains Jean-Baptiste Poquelin , qui doit se mordre la langue en constatant les dégâts que nous ont fait les « anglois ». Cette chanson évoque avec une exagération humoristique l'équipage et la cargaison du voilier Irish Rover, ainsi que son destin tragique. L' interprétation n'a pas manqué d'évoquer chez moi une version plus édulcorée, au destin tragi-comique. J'ai donc le plaisir égoïste, (je ne sais pas quelle sera votre réaction après lecture ), de vous présenter « BOHEMIAN ROVER ». Je vous l'accorde c'est un pléonasme, il n'y a pas plus vagabond qu'un Bohémien ? Est-ce pour cette raison que de petites embarcations à voile sont appelées des «VAURIENS ».....Humour ! Nostalgie, J'ai eu le rare privilège d'écumer en compagnie de mon Beau-père les communes du haut Livradois Forez. J'exerçais cet excitant métier de brocanteur et dénicheur de trésors, cachés dans vos poubelles. Si Pierre PERRET, dans sa chanson « Marcel » avait « échangé des Chinois contre des porte-clefs », nous les Romanos, nous faisions tout autant, en vous fourguant du formica contre des trésors en bois. Fougueux conquérants des étendues boisées de cette région, chaque jour, nous voguions à bord de notre intrépide FORD TRANSIT plateau diesel , pour découvrir dans ces contrées sauvages, où même les corbeaux passent sur le dos pour ignorer la misère, les vieux meubles et vestiges du passé dont les jeunes accédants à la propriété voulaient se débarrasser. Si, en Espagne, il est coutume de « jeter le bébé avec l'eau du bain », ici, ce sont les objets témoins du temps passé que l'on jette aux orties après le départ des Anciens. LA CHAISE-DIEU MÉDIÉVALE & LA RÉVOLUTION BÉNÉDICTINE
On July 13, 2024, at La Chaise-Dieu, the European Network of Casadean Sites will present a public conference on the topic of the Benedictine Revolution in Livradois-Forez, led by the La Chaise-Dieu Abbaye, starting a bit earlier with the religious reform brought up by Charlemagne in the 9th century. The Abbaye was founded less than 200 years later. The conference will focus the discussion – and it has to be a discussion – on the consequences of the Carolingian religious reform, the agricultural revolution with the invention of the horse collar and the management of the land, the rotation of crops, cultivation, and fertilization. Then the proto-industrial revolution that will bring five types of watermills for grain, oil, tan, hemp (fiber and cloth), and slightly later paper. This will make Livradois-Forez an essential region producing hemp cables and hemp cloth for ships. The first result was 75 days without any work in the year, no work before and after morning and evening angelus, and a pause with midday angelus. The second result was better food and demographical expansion, up to the end of the 13th century.
Then things became darker. Overpopulation brought unrest and all sorts of contests and conflicts at the religious level itself (Crusades in the Middle East, but also against the Cathars in France. Then in 1346, the Black Death, a pandemic in Europe of the bubonic plague, caused a tremendous level of deaths. Then, the One Hundred Years War started in 1337. The resilience of the population enabled Europe in general to go through, and around 1450 the printing press was developed by Gutenberg enabling the printing of books for the highly-needed university training of great numbers of people to bring Europe back on its feet. The Renaissance was the result of this period, a tremendously positive and creative period, and at the same time, a highly-disturbed era with The Reformation, and the religious wars that concerned all countries at a time when nationalism was emerging.
Two speakers-debaters will present the five or six centuries concerned as fast as possible to let the audience debate questions like:
1- The influence and impact of Charlemagne’s religious reform.
2- The feudal system: land ownership and serfdom.
3- The role of technology to produce energy, replace human work, and develop new products.
4- Religious tensions with Avignon and Rome conformist Popes.
5- The role of The Inquisition and religious justice.
6- The fate of the cable industry when Omerin In Ambert is number one in Europe or the world for various high-security and high-technicity cables.
7- The culture: architecture, music, painting, carving, theater, oratorio and opera, literature.
It will take place at LA CHAISE-DIEU – AUDITORIUM GEORGES CZIFFRA
SAMEDI 13 JUILLET 2024 – 14-17 HEURES 30.
The two main speakers so far are Dr Jacques COULARDEAU (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) and PhD Graduate Student Clément GOMY (Université Clermont Auvergne) with a direct contribution by Ludivine BOURDUGE and Xavier OMERIN on the adventure of the Omerin Family.
Make it a day visit with the Abbey church to visit, the choir tapestries in their new shrine, Lavaudieu’s Abbey church of the female branch of the order, and climbing to the top of what they call in La Chaise-Dieu the scaffoldings of the abbey church. You may also come across Saint Robert de Turlande in the cloister if you can meditate on and contemplate twelve centuries of human history in this heart of spirituality.

Le 13 juillet 2024, à La Chaise-Dieu, le Réseau Européen des Sites Casadéens présentera une conférence publique sur le thème de la Révolution Bénédictine en Livradois-Forez, structurée par l'abbaye de La Chaise-Dieu, bien qu’elle eût commencé un peu plus tôt par la réforme religieuse élaborée par Charlemagne au 9ème siècle. L'Abbaye a été fondée moins de 200 ans plus tard. La conférence orientera la discussion – et cela doit être une vraie discussion – sur les conséquences de la réforme religieuse carolingienne, la révolution agricole avec l'invention du collier de cheval et la gestion des terres, la rotation des cultures, les méthodes agraires et la fertilisation. Puis la révolution proto-industrielle qui apportera cinq types de moulins à eau pour les céréales, l'huile, le tan, le chanvre (fibre et toile) et, un peu plus tard, le papier. Le Livradois-Forez deviendra ainsi une région incontournable pour la production de câbles et de toiles de chanvre pour la marine, marchande en un premier temps et royale au 17ème siècle. Le premier résultat a été 75 jours sans aucun travail dans l'année, aucun travail avant et après l'angélus du matin et du soir, et une pause avec l'angélus de midi. Le deuxième résultat fut une meilleure alimentation et une expansion démographique, jusqu'à la fin du 13ème siècle.
Puis les choses sont devenues plus sombres. La surpopulation a provoqué des troubles et toutes sortes de luttes et de conflits au niveau religieux lui-même (croisades au Moyen-Orient, mais aussi contre les Cathares en France). Puis en 1346, la peste noire, une pandémie de peste bubonique en Europe, a provoqué un terrible désastre. Puis, la guerre de Cent Ans éclata en 1337 et dura 120 ans. La résilience de la population permit à l'Europe en général de s'en sortir et vers 1450 l'imprimerie fut développée par Gutenberg permettant l'impression de livres pour les formations universitaires indispensables et l’éducation d'un grand nombre de personnes pour remettre l'Europe sur pied. La Renaissance est le résultat de cette période, une période extrêmement positive et créatrice, et en même temps, une époque très perturbée avec la Réforme Protestante et les guerres de religion qui ont concernée. tous les pays à une époque où le nationalisme émergeait.
Deux intervenants-débatteurs présenteront succinctement les cinq ou six siècles concernés pour permettre au public de débattre de questions telles que :
1- L’influence et l’impact de la réforme religieuse de Charlemagne.
2- Le système féodal : propriété foncière et servage.
3- Le rôle de la technologie pour produire de l'énergie, remplacer le travail humain et développer de nouveaux produits.
4- Tensions religieuses avec les papes conformistes d'Avignon et de Rome.
5- Le rôle de l'Inquisition et de la justice religieuse.
6- Le sort de l'industrie du câble, alors qu'Omerin à Ambert est numéro un en Europe ou dans le monde pour divers câbles de haute sécurité et de haute technicité.
7- La culture : architecture, musique, peinture, sculpture, théâtre, oratorio et opéra, littérature.
Elle aura lieu à LA CHAISE-DIEU – AUDITORIUM GEORGES CZIFFRA

Faites-en une journée complète de visite avec l'église abbatiale qui vaut un coup d’œil, les tapisseries du chœur dans leur nouvelle châsse architecturale qui valent un deuxième coup d’œil, l'église abbatiale de Lavaudieu de la branche féminine de l'ordre, et la montée au sommet de ce qu'on appelle à La Chaise-Dieu l‘échafaudage de l'église abbatiale avec un casse-croûte tout en haut. Vous pourrez également croiser Saint Robert de Turlande dans le cloître si vous avez la patience de méditer et contempler douze siècles d'histoire humaine dans ce cœur vivant de spiritualité.

Life on the Road: Week 1, France
A week ago we had just reached French shores and stayed the night near the Belgium border. Now, over a thousand kilometres later, I look back at life on the road in Suzi the HiAce.
The days before we left England, I was filled with nerves. A weird sort of apprehension-excitement-fear combo descended on me, especially as George left me alone for a day whilst he headed up to Manchester to do a last-minute video shoot. Then, Monday morning finally came and I was so glad we were ready to leave, given that my mind had been running in circles in the days prior.
Even if we had forgotten things, not planned for certain eventualities, I was ready to go and to start our long-awaited trip.
The drive to Dover was somewhat uneventful, punctuated by a welcome visit at my Aunt’s house in Ashford, and a lovely meal, sharing stories of places travelled and frantically jotting notes down from my knowledgeable relatives about the best routes to take (and tolls to avoid!) in France. We arrived at the ferry terminal with ages to spare, an unusual departure from George and my usual tendency to leave everything to the last minute.
Once on French soil, we really enjoyed taking in the surroundings of the north coast. Although an altogether flat and industrial area, Dunkirk and the neighbouring villages were peppered with characterful qualities: the ‘Gilets Jaunes’ hosting small road-side bonfires, faded signage painted on brick facades, and unusual Flemish-style housing with tiled roofs and shuttered windows. We started to search online for the history of places we saw and towns we passed through, often discovering impressive stories from both the world wars of soldiers’ resistance and the resilience of ordinary local folk. This activity of reading a place’s Wikipedia page as evening entertainment has become a bit of a habit!

En route to Paris, we risked the tolls and experienced the aggression of French drivers when they get stuck behind a 25-year old fully-laden campervan. Tolls are something we’re generally going to avoid; whilst they save you time, we’d rather save the money and enjoy the more scenic routes. But in this instance, we got to France’s capital nice and quickly, and found free showers at the roadside services as a bonus.
The two and a half days we spent in Paris were just perfect: we kept things slow and cheap rather than trying to see and do everything.
Based on advice from other vanlifers, we opted to park up in a suburb on the outskirts of the city and catch the train each day. Despite protests from railway workers and closed train lines making headline news whilst we were there, the line we took seemed unaffected and it worked out brilliantly - we would pop up at the station outside Notre Dame, and each day take in the sights of the city by foot. Road closures left streets feeling calm and quiet, combined with the fact that the freezing cold temperatures were keeping the crowds away!
Generally, we mooched around the Quartier Latin and the student areas, centred on the Pantheon and Rue Mouffetard, the city’s oldest street. I was impressed to see sustainable, human-centred initiatives across the city, no-doubt linked to the forward-thinking stance of Paris’ mayor, Anne Hidalgo (a renowned figure in urban design circles). There were lots of bicycles, generous pedestrian spaces, electric car charging stations and even billboards announcing the city’s ‘participatory budgeting’ scheme, although the lack of green spaces and trees was apparent too.

We were lucky enough to catch up with friends and family in Paris, which made the big city feel warm and welcoming.
On the first night, a girl who I had met back in Sydney when we both volunteered at a not-for-profit restaurant met up with us and showed us the local’s perspective into the best inner-city spots for wandering and socialising. On Thursday, what began as George randomly spotting that an old bandmate of his was also in Paris, resulted in a couple of beers that evening with him and his girlfriend. And the next day, we were able to see one of my cousins, along with his wife and newborn baby, in their apartment in the 11th arrondissement. These encounters were so enjoyable, and were a powerful reminder that it will be the people we see and spend time with along this trip that define it.
Sad to leave but ready for the next step, we left Paris in the knowledge that life admin was on the cards. We wanted to get a gas refill for our spare gas bottle so that when we run out on our first tank in some middle-of-nowhere location, we don’t have to eat cold spaghetti! After a few delightful days of being tourists in Paris, including filming our first episode of ‘Place Portraits’ about film photography through our documentary channel Broaden, spending a tireless day looking for the right gas refill felt like a fall from grace.
We quickly learned that all the little things like gas, electricity and water can take up a lot of time when you’re living in a van and you’re in a foreign country.
Eventually laden with a new (albeit pricey) bottle of gas, we headed out towards the countryside to find somewhere to stay for the night. We didn’t get that far, and stopped in the town of Fontainbleu - renowned for its historic connections to French royalty (also worth checking out the Wikipedia page). We found our parking spot through the fantastic app ‘Park4Night’, and this location reaffirmed just how awesome the app can be, as it led us to a space literally outside the gates to Fontainbleu Castle!

One of mine and George’s priorities has been to squeeze in exercise along the journey. Staying active is not only important to the two of us, but essential when you’re often sitting still in a van for long distances. The only thing getting in the way of doing lots of exercise is the fact that we don’t have a shower (though we’re looking into a small one with submersible pump and would love recommendations from folks who have used them before). Nonetheless, we did a 5K run around the eery castle grounds at Fontainbleu, and I’ve tailored a workout with the NikeTraining app that I can just about do lying in the van. As for the washing situation, well it’s either boiling a kettle and doing a face-cloth shower, or heading to public swimming pools (as we did in Lyon) and making use of the facilities whilst squeezing a swim in as well.
With dreams of snow, we spent two days headed south-east, through Lyon, towards the Alps. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a bit of a half-baked plan and we eventually decided to give up on the idea.
We had gotten quite close to the Alps before we decided it wasn’t worth it. We’d been tracking slower than expected, and had generally realised that Suzi can’t just whizz up hilly roads as we’d like. Given that we also had no plans to ski (and were just headed there for the views and hikes), it felt like a huge commitment for not all that much reward. It was a frustrating decision, but a good first experience in the reality of trip-planning and timing.
Almost a week in, and it felt like we’d hit our first slump: giving up on the Alps and generally being aware that Suzi is an old van with a somewhat unreliable engine. Although we’ve had no issues with her so far, other than underwhelming fuel efficiency, George is conscious that we may have worn piston rings. The piston rings are something that could cause us issues in the future, so we’re closely monitoring them for now and on the look-out for a reliable garage in South France/Spain that may be able to have a look at them and give us an idea of what repairs may cost.

Changing the plan and re-diverting west turned out to be a real positive. We ventured along some alpine roads through the stunning scenery of the Parc Natural Regional Livradois-Forez and ended the first week on a high - parked up in the middle of nowhere safe and sound in the van.
That evening, we ate fresh baguette with local cheese and snuggled under our blanket watching a BBC crime drama. With no other sign of life in sight, we finally felt free - next to a stream in a misty forest, accompanied by the soundtrack of light rain. It wasn’t the most stunning place, the most famous or the most extreme, but it was just right.

Throwback to a fun battle beyond the pines with two of our favorites modern cars. Lieu de Mémoire
fleeing through the Livradois-Forez
their branches reach for me, tear at my threads
they mean not to harm but to shield me.
i am running from, running to
Le Chambon-Sur-Lignon
whispers on the wind of sanctuary,
a star of hope for those who see it;
peace to be found among the Gentiles,
those at least who have not betrayed their humanity.
a song in the branches, echoes of joy
warmer than la burle which bites me
i hear the song, out of sight but near
i feel the warmth, friendship of an unknown
i see the sign above the doorway:
‘Aimez-vous les uns les autres’
(some 3,000 Jews were sheltered in Chambon, France in WWII, by Christians who themselves had been persecuted 2 centuries before)
