black eagles d&d
- Hubert is the DM and he always tries to make the story ~edgy~
- “Before you lay two paths. The first is decrepit, lined with the bones of charred trees. Dark clouds block your path, and you swear you taste the dying cinders of a life once brimming with vitality in the air.” “Let me guess: the second is lined with blood?” “If you would allow me to finish . . .” “. . .” “. . . the second is a scarlet path--” “WE’RE NOT TAKING THE BLOOD PATH AGAIN”
- “Well I will take the blood path that Hubert was kind enough to prepare for us!” “EDELGARD NO”
- Caspar’s character is usually an orc barbarian. He tries to fight everything, even when it’d be counterproductive.
- “The bartender asks you to pay your dues.” “Oh I’ll make him pay!” Hubert always allows it, but he makes a snide remark every time.
- Petra (canonically) hates math so she gets incredibly frustrated when trying to understand how much damage she’s dealt/been dealt. Bernie walks her through it.
- Petra is one of the few who varies her characters every time. She likes to pick different classes, though rogue and ranger are her favourites.
- Bernie’s character has 50 pages of backstory. She picks homebrew race every time and has an additional 50 pages of notes on it. Last game she played as a half-siren, full-vampire druid. Hubert gives her the most content because she’s the best at the story part.
- Edelgard’s character is a very obvious self-insert but she refuses to admit it
- “So . . . ‘Adrestiana’ is a human barbarian fighting to free her land from the rule of a corrupt religious order.” “I fail to see your point.” “She has an enchanted axe.”
- Dorothea always plays as a elven bard and she never wants to fight anything she doesn’t have to. Is constantly groaning whenever Caspar initiates another fight. Tries to flirt with everything except Ferdinand’s oc.
- Ferdinand, while not as blatant in his self-insertion as Edelgard, always plays a nobleman looking to either restore his house’s honour or enter the fight against some blight upon the land. His oc always has a horse that’s arguably more developed than the actual player character. Always a paladin, and always tries to hook up his oc with someone else’s. So far he’s dated Petra’s, Bernie’s, and surprisingly, Linhardt’s.
- “Fair Leonore, lend me your hand in battle, and I shall fund all your academic endeavours!” “Alright Ferdinand, you got me. Here’s my hand in marriage.”
- Linhardt acts like he’s not paying attention or didn’t put any effort in, but he always seems to know what’s going on even when he fell asleep.
- “It’s because you spent 30 minutes deciding on whether to go to the tavern or not. I’m simply skipping through the drudgery of your decision-making.”
- Byleth comes up with the most batshit, off-colour solutions for every situation. It suddenly occurs to everyone that they’re the one who answers all those advice box questions.
- “I thought it was Seteth this WHOLE TIME!” “I was knowing it was someone else when I am receiving a note back saying ‘Petra!? You’re doing amazing, sweetie!’” Byleth, gripping her by the shoulders: “because you ARE”
- “So when you told me ‘traditions are meant to be broken’ . . . did you realize what you were encouraging me to do??” “El, an ominous drumbeat started playing when you shared your tragic backstory with me. It wasn’t exactly subtle.”
- This tangent completely derails the session that night.

black eagles relationships i like but don’t see talked about enough
Ferdinand and Petra - I adore their supports. You see a lot of Ferdinand’s dorky side with his reading about historic weapons, and you see that he is genuinely curious about Petra’s culture. He admits that he initially didn’t realize how sophisticated Brigidian techniques are and I just adore his vulnerability with her. And then there’s Petra in their A support, admitting she found a second home in Fòdlan, and the two discuss their loneliness? It’s such interesting insight into both characters (especially Ferdie; I’d say these are some of his most well-rounded supports)
Hubert and Dorothea - Dorothea sees right through Hubert’s edgy theatre kid persona. She approaches him like she would any friend right from the beginning and teases him about his love life. She also respects and believes him when he says that unrequited love isn’t his motivation. I would’ve liked a conclusion that wasn’t Dorothea suggesting they marry, but it is really funny that she did that. I love their paired ending too--completely platonic espionage opera! What could be better?
Hubert and Byleth - in my head they have a quirky sitcom where Byleth keeps trying to arrange Edeleth/Ferdibert double dates and Hubert has to attend them. (but seriously, the appeal of Hubert is looking at this man and saying “I’m gonna make you like me”, and then you do it). Outside of my shipping biases, his threats to you are funny as shit considering that he has no power over you and he’s always dying in battle, but once you win his trust he admits that despite looking Blatantly Evil, he truly abhors TWSTID and is already planning their follow-up war. I could easily see him and Byleth co-leading the war in the shadows (and that’s where the dialogue of the aforementioned platonic Huleth workplace comedy takes place). Also my friend who played as m!Byleth told me the “we could be a couplet of birds” line in the A-support still exists regardless of gender. Hubert is demiromantic bi and you CANNOT change my mind
Edelgard and Petra - “Don’t settle for being the bird. Be the arrow instead” Both have a great deal of mutual respect for each other, even though Edelgard is heir to the nation that has kept Petra’s country down for years. You see the same beliefs Petra holds in her supports with Caspar here--that being, “we are not our parents, we can make different choices”. It’s a shame they only have 2 supports. I think it would’ve been cool to see Petra asking Edelgard for Brigidian independence or otherwise talking about how she can achieve her goal.
Edelgard and Linhardt - I actually think people talk about this a bit, but it’s one of my favourite Black Eagles support chains so I have to mention it. This one is the key to understanding that Edelgard’s better world is only possible in her route, when she has the support and opportunity to trust others enough to learn how to listen to them and consider their perspectives. I advise anyone who thinks Edelgard would be a brutal dictator to watch these supports, because they so blatantly contradict that idea? Linhardt initially frustrates her because she knows he’s talented and smart but he doesn’t want to do anything to help the world with that. Characters like Linhardt are usually given an arc in which they overcome an initial selfishness to help others. This is not that. These supports are about Edelgard learning to understand Linhardt and accommodate him. Edelgard agonizes over finding the perfect way to allow him to do his research in a way that suits him--and when she senses his hesitation at her initial plan, she presses him for the problem and reconfigures the idea because she won’t put him in a situation he’s not fully content in. This is astounding character growth (from both of them, but mostly Edelgard). Also the struggle depicted in this chain is just something that spoke to me when I first saw it--”be useful” versus “learn for knowledge’s sake” is pretty much my exact struggle in life 😂 Seeing two of my favourite characters reach a resolution that satisfied both of them was hopeful, to say the least.
Caspar and Ferdinand - What strikes me about their supports is that it compares and contrasts these characters’ ideas of justice against each other. Honestly, the Black Eagles as a whole have takes on morality that are just slightly skewed, and these characters’ arguments about it exemplify it. Caspar just thinks that people who hurt others should be hit right away, head empty no thoughts but j u s t i c e. Ferdinand initially believes that all sense of justice comes from being nobility, and with that comes an obligation to be morally superior. Having Caspar just go “uh yeah, what does nobility have to do with it? I just had to hit that guy” is one way in which Ferdinand’s ideals are challenged. It’s a cool contrast that I think highlights an interesting aspect of the Black Eagles and what they were taught.
Dorothea and Bernie - I love everything about their interaction. If Dorothea were a lesser character, she’d be the mean popular girl who shames Bernie for her messy hair and her anxiety. Instead, Dorothea is patient and Bernie is like “oh no she’s Too Cool for me”. Dorothea also makes note of what Bernie says as she gets too anxious to continue the interaction and aims to comfort her in their next support. We get a good Bernie character moment in their B-support, where she mentions her father ruining her friendship with a commoner boy--and a cathartic moment where Dorothea tells her that her father’s an asshole and that they’re going to be friends anyway. Bernie cries in Dorothea’s arms and AHHHH why didn’t we get MORE of this???
Bernie and Petra - If I could add any support and ending to the game, it would be Bernie/Petra. They have such a good starting point--because of Bernie’s anxiety and Petra being a second language speaker of Fòdlandish, they are prone to miscommunications (which is the general theme of early Bleagles supports). They had a nice 2-support arc where they understand each other a little better--but then there’s the paralogue, where Petra encourages Bernie to come to her homeland with her and Bernie realizes she wants to travel and see amazing things like carnivorous plants. This is fantastic character development for her and is a satisfying conclusion to her arc. I feel like most of Bernie’s endings involve her just reverting back to her hermit self instead of developing a balance between who she was at the beginning and who she’s grown into. I think Petra would offer to let her come to Brigid again, where she helps her navigate a new language and culture. Bernie’s anxiety is still bad but Petra has been in her position and can offer advise and reassurance. Petra is also patient and would give Bernie a safe little house near the carnivorous plants for her to retreat to when overwhelmed. It becomes both of their refuge, with Petra taking time away from her regal duties to spend time with Bernie and her art and her stories. Whether it’s romantic or platonic is up to preference but I low-key ship them 😏

The true biggest flaw of Fe3h is Fódlan doesn't have a Halloween. Can you tell me Hubert and Bernadetta wouldn't go all out for Halloween?
The idea for the event comes about during the White Heron Cup, where Bernie expresses that the dance would be a lot less scary if she could hide her face. She and Hubert had just undergone their B support and Hubert is still looking for ways to make Bernie comfortable around him while not sacrificing his own self-expression. Event Planner Hubert, who secretly enjoys parties but wishes they weren't filled with pretention, invites everyone to a "mysterious costume party" and frame it as a masquerade ball. (We're ignoring the fact that in canon he's like "really, the archbishop wants to throw a party right now?"). With the Vestra planning skills passed down for generations, he takes over the dining hall one night and books Manuela and Dorothea as entertainment (Ferdinand also joins, because he will take any and all opportunity to sing). Ideally, he decorates with as many skulls as he could possibly accumulate (”where did this come from?” “*evil laugh* wouldn’t you like to know”) and many candles. Even for Hubert, however, skulls are hard to come by, so Bernie ends up carving faces into pumpkins. Her weird idea is met with delight. The whole scene is slick and dark and the dance itself is held at midnight.
It 100% gets shut down in the middle, but it sure as hell was worth it.
What Everyone in Black Eagles Wears:
Edelgard - *slams fist on table* valkyrie Edelgard!!! She and Hubert make a set of black wings with leftover feathers from the Flame Emperor costume and she uses her armour from class as a template. She is many girls' gay awakening that night.
Hubert - a Dark Falcon Knight costume complete with a black helmet with plummage. It covers his eyes sharply, in red, and his cape trails behind him on the ground. The black feather details are kinda sus, but people go "oh it's just Hubert being dramatic". He's just too obvious to be involved in the Flame Emperor plot, come on now . . .
Bernadetta - of course I'm putting Bernie-bear in a bear costume. She has an adorable brown cloak with little bear ears on top that she made herself. The hood comes down really low, so much so that she put slits for her eyes. After the event she starts attending class like that. Byleth wants to make it the house uniform on the battlefield.
Dorothea - she borrows one of Manuela's old costumes, from one of her starring roles as a showgirl who marries into nobility. There are full peacock feathers circling her and there’s more jewels on it than she’d ever worn in her life. Manuela’s performance as this role was her bi awakening and wearing the costume feels too sacred (”if I sneeze in this outfit I will destroy it and owe the opera money even though the production is long over and Manuela owns it”). Petra notes that Dorothea is reminding her of home, because she looks like an exotic bird. She takes breaks from singing to flirt with the Bleagles girls mingle!
Ferdinand - Dorothea tells him he'll be in her good graces if he comes dressed as a bee. Not only does he oblige, but he goes all out. He wears a black jacket with sharp tailcoats to emulate a stinger, a black-and-yellow striped shirt, a gold vest, and a set of wings. He wears a bee antennae headpiece with flowers attached to it. Dorothea feels a little bad for making him go through the effort but he is genuinely embracing the bee lifestyle and everyone is super impressed with him.
Caspar - he just wears his battlefield clothes. (I made him a grappler in my first playthrough, so I’m imagining him in that beautiful outfit). When asked if he dressed up, he claims that he’s a warrior.
Linhardt - draws whiskers on his face and claims he's a cat. Everyone teases him for being low effort until Byleth walks in, also with cat whisker face paint and no other effort.
Petra - she initially panics because she wants to attend but has nothing suitable. She doesn’t want to wear any of her Brigidian clothes because they are not costumes. Inspiration hits her one day when Byleth accidentally hits her with their trailing jacket sleeves while zooming through the monastery at a speed no one goes at in their everyday life. She borrows a jacket and slumps it over her shoulders, puts her hair down, and tries to keep her expression blank. She even makes a copy of the Sword of the Creator. The costume is a massive hit.
Additionally, consider the following interaction:
Edelgard: It's no use. Nothing I own is suitable for the occassion!
Hubert: Well, save for that one costume.
Edelgard: . . . I am not exposing myself as the Flame Emperor for a party

broke: haha linhardt is so relatable bc he’s always tired!!
woke: linhardt von hevrig exemplifies the struggle of living in a society where one’s skills are used for “productivity” at the expense of personal enjoyment. his refusal to monetize his passion is a near-radical stance. many other characters challenge it in their supports with him, only for the resounding conclusion to be “that’s just how he is”. they accept this. linhardt is an anti-capitalist power fantasy where the world can change to let us do what we want and our work is for our own knowledge. linhardt is not tired because he has a “weak constitution”. linhardt is tired of the system, and we recognize that.

black eagles music tastes
Edelgard - Carly Rae Jepsen and ABBA exclusively.
Hubert - no one can tell me this man’s music taste isn’t nightcore and vocalloid. you also can’t tell me he and Edelgard didn’t plan their entire coup to Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)
Ferdinand - the most insufferable Disney Adult you can imagine
Caspar - cursed mashups
Linhardt - lo-fi hip-hop chill beats to study/relax to
Bernadetta - anime openings and k-pop
Dorothea - theatre kid, particularly of the Wicked/Les Miserables/Phantom variety
Petra - sea chanties/Enya

So according to the library in the game, House Vestra is responsible for “the darker tasks of the Empire” and “coordinating things such as events and rituals”, which i have taken to mean one thing . . .
. . . Hubert is a wedding planner

a very unfocused analysis on why edelgard stans are mostly lgbt
I am constantly thinking about how Edelgard just doesn’t seem designed to appeal to cishet men. Like the joke is that Bleagles is the Gay House, but everything about her feels deliberately non-hetero. She’s dressed in sharp outfits covering her upper body, with proportions that don’t seem exaggerated. Her poise and the way she effortlessly flourishes her axe exhibits an air of coolness. While titties out =/= character of no substance, Edelgard being dressed more modestly suggests that she wasn’t designed with male-centred fanservice in mind. And she still looks absolutely stunning in her more modest attire (like seriously, I haven’t felt the need to return to cosplay in years but I want to do her academy look so bad).
Edelgard is intense. She does not mince her words and she is constantly evaluating you. Though she tries, she has a difficult time understanding her peers initially. Early on, she talks about how she would sacrifice herself and others in the name of some greater good. She is terrible at communicating with her peers. She has to be seen as infallible. Her heart has been hardened for years and she assumes she has to stay that way. She also assumes everyone mourns the same way she does - which is why she (kind of insensitively) insists you move on when Jeralt dies. Because to her, grief has to be channeled towards action, or else you’ll get lost in it. This attitude is demonstrated time and time again as she presses on. It can make her come off as cold and unfeeling - but look closer, and she’s anything but. Her story is ultimately about her realizing that to achieve her goals, she needs to let people in and allow herself to want things like cakes and tea parties and lazy days in peace. The game leaves the player guessing as to how involved the Flame Emperor was in each Part I event, makes you feel hurt by her betrayal, and leaves you with a choice: do you follow the orders of the woman who tried to make you a god without your consent, or a young girl with questionable morals about to throw the world into upheaval?
Choosing her of your own volition (not for completionist reasons) requires the basic ability to sympathize with a woman’s pain. It also requires the player to read beyond her unwavering will and dubious methods to get a sense of how deep that pain goes and how the theme of humanity relates to her differently in each route. The player must be able to see a young woman’s desperate resolve to change the world so it stops exploiting people and ruining lives. They must be able to accept the fact that women can make the same morally wrong and ambivalent decisions that complicated male characters get to make all the time and still be the one to root for. This is not unique to LGBT+ people, but this population is likely to understand why Edelgard feels so strongly about why she has to change the system.
I don’t think “Edelgard gets undue criticism because she’s a woman” captures the full picture. An important aspect of her treatment by certain parts of the fandom is that she’s a radical woman. Her hatred of the Church and the Crest system resonates way harder with people who have been hurt by institutions that are deeply engrained in our society. Siding with her means siding against the Church - which, while different from real world religious institutions, still invokes language about “sin” and “punishment. Choosing Edelgard will likely hit different if homophobic and transphobic Christians used that rhetoric against you. I’m willing to go out on a limb and say that the reason F/F Edeleth is the more popular iteration of that ship because most people who would choose to S-support Edelgard are LGBT+ themselves. This is not a revelation. To anyone in the community, it’s fairly obvious.
Crimson Flower was my first route. I went into the game knowing absolutely nothing. I played it during the last week of 2020 and hoo boy was it cathartic. I felt like I was living out a gay revolution power fantasy, where I could truly change systems of oppression while fighting alongside a group of troubled students I’d shaped the lives of. Through your unwavering support, Edelgard learns that she needs to be human, that she must listen to her friends, and that she’s allowed to enjoy the world she’s creating. I love this character so much. It has been six months since I first played and I am still analyzing her, because there’s so much depth. Yet so many people fail to see that depth and dismiss her as evil, because they never had the will to understand complicated women in the first place.

hubert is objectively the funniest character
evidence:
- just listen to any line of dialogue he has
- “von Vestra” is the absolute rawest surname I can think of. It sounds perfectly ominous and suitable for a character who looks Like That. but like . . . his first name is HUBERT
- Me: “Oh, maybe it’s pronounced the French way!” Edelgard: *very much not the French way* Hubert
- His entire deal is his obsessive and steadfast devotion to Edelgard. Edelgard is a character who can throw axes around like they’re nothing. Hubert, meanwhile, is made out of tissue paper and will die from a single hit.
- Threatens Byleth, a trained mercenary, in their C-support. Has to attend class the next day.
- seriously listen to any Edelbert support
- Felix has hilariously edgy lines too but Hubert does it in a more theatrical way? Like to me Felix is Shadow the Edgehog and Hubert is Scar Lion King. or like, Felix is Simple Plan and Hubert is MCR (no shade to Felix btw, I laughed at all his lines too)
- I forget who the op of the post was but someone said “Hubert is the Evil Advisor trope except the person he’s advising is 100% in on it”
- He killed his father. this is mentioned once and is never brought up again. nobody reacts to this
- I’m obsessed with El’s Hubert impersonation but on my second CF run I got to remember that Hubert impersonates his father and I am. OBSESSED with these dorks.
- He acts like he’s too good for school events and then goes “Lady Edelgard I hope you save one dance for me 🥺”
- DO YOU NOT LIKE THE SCARLET PATH I HAVE PREPARED FOR YOU
- “Hey Hubert is this your NOXIOUS HANDKERCHIEF?” “Yes, that is mine. Thank you.”
- He’s genuinely one of the more complex characters (if you look beyond the surface) and I am so so passionate about his character development but I mostly like him because every line he has sends me
- Hubert only blushes for two characters in the game: Byleth . . . and Ferdinand.
- he likes board games
- when you feed him something he likes he’s like “i don’t particularly care for food, but i will admit weakness for this one dish” which i take to mean that hubert is so edgy he thinks he’s too cool for EATING
- or alternatively, he is an actual vampire
- the evil laugh
- my best friend conceptualized the Byleth/Hubert relationship as a dad trying hard to impress his angsty teenage son. she calls him Hugh and I demand that this catch on please can we make Hugh happen
- by giving him traditionally “scary” facial features he actually gets one of the most interesting and unique character designs. this means that a lot of fanfic writes him as “sexy, but in a rat way”
- WOULDN’T IT BE TERRIBLE IF THE ARCHBISHOP GOT MURDERED
- he’s afraid of heights
- that one existential horror advice box question where he’s like “I used to fear the goddess. Now I fear the living” or something
- he is a massive edgelord to everyone else but he deliberately stops laughing around Bernie bc it scares her
- when Jeralt dies in Black Eagles Part I, Hubert gives you dry facts about the enemy’s position as his own odd way to comfort you. however, in any other route, he says “I’ve never been one for condolences” and leaves it at that
- he is 2 years older than his classmates. that fact alone makes everything he does 100x funnier
- the Hubert Stanning Experience is just laughing at this emo man until he’s wormed his way into your heart and soul and now he’s stuck there as your weird murder son
