How many times has your new year resolution sounded like a weight loss goal? Mine has, almost every year.

For the longest time, the number on the weighing scale dictated how I showed up in the world. By the time I was fifteen, I had already been on Atkins, the Low-carb diet, the Paleo diet, and multiple detox diets, only to gloriously fail at each one. The crippling anxiety and frustration that followed each of these failures became a permanent part of my personality.

What started this madness? A medical condition I didn’t know I had.

I spent years losing my mind, but not my weight, because I didn’t know why I was gaining it in the first place. What boggles my mind is that I wasn’t even interested in finding out.

I knew one thing: I had to lose the weight and if I couldn’t do that, I didn’t deserve to be happy.

In 2021, the global market for weight loss products and services was valued at 254.9 billion dollars. This billion-dollar diet industry has an astounding failure rate of 95%. Interestingly, that is exactly what keeps feeding it.

The success of this industry is directly proportional to the degree you fail at accepting yourself as you are. In a media-saturated world like ours, that leaves no room for imperfection, self-acceptance is nothing but an abstract concept. So, we try, we fail, and we keep coming back.

Ein Leben als Veganer

Vielleicht erinnert ihr euch noch daran, dass ich vor einiger Zeit auf X/Twitter gefragt hatte, ob es euch stört, wenn ich hin und wieder doch private Dinge poste und scheinbar war niemand darüber empört, also berichte ich euch – so kurz und bündig wie möglich – über meine Existenz als Veganer

Warum bin ich überhaupt Veganer?

Die Antwort ist recht simpel: 2021 ging es mir absolut miserabel und ich dachte, ich sterbe – mein Neurologe hat keine Antwort für meinen Zustand gefunden, dass es durch die MS verursacht wurde, war allerdings eindeutig.

Was hat das mit Veganismus zu tun? Ganz simpel: mit MS sollte man sich auf keinen Fall von tierischen Milchprodukten ernähren – etwas, das ich allerdings erst durch die Deutsche MS Gesellschaft herausgefunden habe. Und da bei mir eine Intoleranz gegenüber tierischem Eiweiß festgestellt wurde, habe ich kurzerhand meine gesamte Ernährung von einem Tag auf den anderen umgestellt.

Hat es geholfen?

Definitiv. Ich habe seit der Umstellung vor 2,5 Jahren keinen schweren Schub mehr gehabt – neurologische Aussetzer sind immer wieder dabei, aber die sind auch absolut random und haben tatsächlich nichts mit der Ernährung zu tun.

Ist vegane Ernährung nicht teuer?

Eindeutig und absolut teurer als notwendig. Mit veganen Produkten wird sich eine goldene Nase verdient, aber ich habe dahingehend keine Wahl mehr. Wenn ich mich wieder wie zuvor ernähre, merke ich eigentlich sofort, dass es mir deutlich schlechter geht. Ich muss mir den teuren Kram also zwangsweise leisten. Mittlerweile ist das Angebot aber so groß, dass man nicht nur auf eine überteuerte Marke zurückgreifen muss, sondern auch günstigere findet.

Nach 2,5 Jahren habe ich so einiges an Produkten getestet und muss sagen, dass nicht alles brauchbar, das meiste jedoch sehr gut ist und sogar meiner mäkeligen Mutter besser schmeckt als das „Original“.

Hier im Ort gibt es einen Denn’s Biomarkt, bei dem ich einkaufen kann – ist natürlich nicht günstig, aber ich habe mehr Auswahl als bei anderen Supermärkten.

Außerdem habe ich zwei Online-Händler entdeckt, die sogar Kühlware liefern und mir das elende Schleppen durch die Stadt ersparen.

Aktuell habe ich bei „Lotao“ bestellt und warte nun auf meine Lieferung.

Ich werde berichten, wie sich die Produkte schlagen und eventuell auch andere vegane Marken in den „Test“ aufnehmen.

(Das klingt jetzt, als würde ich Geld damit verdienen oder für ein großes Magazin schreiben, aber nichts davon ist zutreffend :‘D )

Eigentlich war das Thema für ein längeres Video geplant, das ich aber so wohl nicht mehr umsetzen werde wie angedacht, da es nun doch schon zu lange her ist, seit ich die Themen dafür zusammengestellt habe und sich in der Zwischenzeit einiges geändert hat.

Every season gives someone a different feeling of emotions. For many, it's the colder months that bring the most discomfort. How can we try and make the best of such an unpleasant experience? Try keeping your same routine as before. I know the seasons can change and that can make it a little difficult. But, keeping your same patterns can help you stay on track. Taking the proper time to reflect on the future can also be a helpful decision. Sometimes we need to write down what it is that makes us feel this way. Is it a flashback experience? Change in temperatures? Certain holidays? Many of these causes can be a trigger for our depression episodes. Taking care of yourself mentally and physically is very important. Maintaining a healthy balance is key to keeping your brain fresh, alert, and healthy. Getting in walks to help clear your mind, many swear by exercises. Working out keeps your body healthy but it's also a simulator for your brain. You may want to consider therapy, sometimes seeing a therapist can help you face your challenges. Calling a friend to help you keep your mind off of the triggers is a suggestion. The last thing we should do is isolate ourselves, it will only become worse over time if we don't face the feelings head-on. Read blog post.
