June 17, 1959
1959 – On this date a London court awarded pianist Liberace (May 16, 1919 – February 4, 1987) $22,400 in damages against the “London Daily Mirror” for implying that the flamboyant entertainer was a homosexual. Throughout his life, Liberace publicly denied he was gay. In Britain at the time, where he was popular enough to enjoy sell-out tours and be mobbed wherever he went, homosexuality was illegal. He was gay and died due to complications from AIDS.

How can you make your voice heard in a democracy? If anyone should know, it’s Mark Segal. As a publisher, journalist, and civil rights pioneer, Segal's career in LGTBQ activism stretches back almost 50 years. In June 1969, a teenage Segal traveled from his home in Philadelphia to New York City, and within weeks found himself in the middle of the Stonewall uprising—a historic series of confrontations between the city's gay community and police. Moved by that experience, Segal helped organize the first New York Pride March in 1970 and devoted his life to activism. As a protester, Segal realized the power of media. (He once leapt in front of Walter Cronkite on the CBS Evening News with a sign that said “Gays Protest CBS Prejudice”). During a ceremony last month, Segal donated a range of objects and records that will help the museum document LGTBQ history from Stonewall to today. Segal's donation included his personal papers—roughly 16 cubic feet of rare journals, flyers, posters, letters, and other materials. Planning a visit? Segal's papers are available for research in our Archives Center.
