The Relief of Comedy
In case you didn’t notice it was Comic Relief last weekend: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b006zrvr/comic-relief Before I go any further I want to say that I think it’s an excellent charity; they help people here as well as in other countries and seem to work by getting alongside people rather then deciding what they might need in a ‘lady bountiful’ sort of way. So far so good. Sadly…

Lenny Henry as the 9.5th Doctor
For Comic Relief 2023, Lenny Henry regenerated into David Tennant as a handover for hosting Comic Relief. Officially he's been called the 9.5th Doctor, but as he seemingly turned into the Fourteenth Doctor that numbering is even stranger than it first seems. Or am I taking this too seriously?

What to Watch This Week
I don’t pretend to be anything but an armchair (or sofa) critic, but jeez, there’s a lot of stuff out there! I’m not particularly nostalgic for the time when there were only three channels and people frequently complained that there was ‘nothing on’, but sometimes it’s quite baffling deciding what to watch. Still, our lives have got a bit simpler in that regard, as we’ve now cancelled Netflix and…

V, V, V — Day 13 : Blues
This morning someone came up to me and asked me “What is the blues?”
So I nailed his nuts to a tree.
I said “Does it hurt?”
He said “YES”
I said “Multiply that pain by a lifetime and you nearly got the blues”
Teach a policeman to ask me stupid questions.
I have to admit that, for the most part, my life is not that hard.
I mean — my health has never been all that good, and I’ve been required to have quite a lot of surgery to deal with the health problems I’ve had.
And because of the various problems I’ve had, my……. life choices, for want of a better phrase, have occasionally been limited. I’ve also been subject to some (not a lot, but some) bullying and teasing and so forth because my health problems left me vulnerable to such things.
Then there are other parts of my life — while I can’t say that I’ve conducted a study of comparable people of my age, I would say I had suffered more tragedy than would be reasonably expected of my age group. Certainly I think there was more tragedy early in life than most people would expect,
And there was the added bonus of the fallout of all of that, which comes back ever so often, and never really goes away.
Plus, of course, the on-going disagreement with my employer about my place of residence.
But even with all that — the persistent and on-going health problems, the persistent and on-going fallout from the early years and the persistent and on-going employment problems — I would still say that my life is better than 90% of the rest of the country.
There is an episode of a show called “Girl Meets World” that illustrates this quite well. The show itself is quite good at illustrating all sorts of things, but this episode is kind of appalling for the most part. However there is one single part — one scene — that throws the point into sharp relief.
Cory (who is now a teacher, and oddly enough teaching his daughter and her friends) draws a pie chart on the board. He fills about 3/8 of it in, and says “This is the people in the world who have access to pie. The rest of the world lives on $2 a day”. This is met with silence.
He then looks at Maya — a young woman (around 14/15) who lives with her mother, in a walk up apartment with holes in the ceiling, the wall, who has a ferret living under her bed, who sometimes doesn’t have enough to eat, who doesn’t have enough for a new coat, who — until the series started — couldn’t afford a mobile phone, and colours in another slice of the pie in pink — around 1/16th of it.
“This is us — all of us — who wake up with a warm bed, access to medical care, and who get to eat waffles for breakfast in the morning and who don’t live in abject poverty. This is us”
Now just to be clear — when I say that my life is better than 90% of people in the country, I mean in the UK. I am not including the rest of the world. I just mean the United Kingdom.
I have had, from a certain point of view, a truly shitty life, and the parts that made it truly shitty are not going to end. My health isn’t going to magically heal itself, and the fallout from the early years isn’t magically going to go away.
But still — my life is still…….. better than most. I have a house that is, for all intents and purposes mine. I have a job where I like the people I work with, that I am very good at, that pays well and — residence issues aside — I like.
And, of course, my most beloved is the most wonderful woman in the world, and without her I would be lost. She makes every day — every moment of every day — better.
But here’s the thing that is most interesting about this — there are people who would look at my life, with everything that has happened — and go “Oh gods, how could you bear it?”. Or possibly “How could you bare it?” because I can never entirely remember if it is bear or bare, but given my previous post about language you have to wonder if it actually matters so I will get back to why it is interesting and not whether it is bear or bare.
But here’s the thing that is most interesting about this — there are people who would look at my life, with everything that has happened — and go “Oh gods, how could you live with all that?” (Do you see what I did there?) They would wonder how I can put up with a life that they would believe is so terrible, so appalling, so bad.
I know I had a point when I started this, but now I am mostly thinking about Fozzie Bear not wearing any clothes. Which — you have to admit — is kind of a weird image given that all he wears is a hat and tie. And did you know that Yogi Bear has never been voted Tie Man of The Year?
But my point, which I have remembered, is two-fold.
You would think there are people who have demonstrably worse lives than others — right now there are those living in war zones, areas struck by natural disasters, areas governed by warlords and dictators and so on.
But walking a mile, or even a yard, in someone else’s shoes is really uncomfortable — don’t do that. They probably won’t fit and they will pinch.
However if you could live their life for a week, or even a day, then………… perhaps you might change your mind.
And perhaps when the policeman asks you that question you would also nail his nuts to the tree.

David Tennant / The Fourteenth Doctor at Comic Relief Red Nose Day March 2023 (Part Two)
Excerpt from Doctor Who Magazine #589:
Executive Producer Phil Collinson: "Things got slightly complicated on 23 February, when David and Sir Lenny shot what's called in 'appointment to view trail'. The plan was for David to be in his normal clothes. But they ran out of time, and he stayed in his Doctor costume. So the bonus is, you got to see more of that costume than anyone had ever planned. And for the best possible cause. If you were glad of that, then Comic Relief is still accepting donations."
