Me and a large Leccinum I found the other day. (Not L. insigne because there wasn't an aspen in sight; maybe what David Aurora calls L. aurantiacum, as it bruised reddish before turning blue-black.) This wasn't even the largest I found; others were easily twice as big across, but unfortunately too rotten to pick up. I haven't eaten any yet, because Colorado Leccinum give some people GI issues in a way they don't often elsewhere and I'm too busy this week to end up stuck on the toilet.

Leccinum Aurantiacum ~ "Red-Capped Scanner Stalk" or "Birch Bolete" or "scaber stalk"
Edibility: Good edible mushroom. Best when dried first to break down toxins and apparently to improve flavour, but sufficient cooking will also break down toxins. Insufficient cooking will lead to very bad tummy times such as vomiting and the shits.
Ecology: I found this in a mixed forest of birch and coniferous trees, grows connected to the roots of birch trees in symbiosis.
Distinguishing Features and Look-alikes: red, brownish, or orange cap that has a velvety texture when young and a smoother texture as it ages. The cap becomes slimey when wet. Cap is 5 cm to 15 cm diameter, stalk is up to 20 cm long, white with distinctive black markings called "scabers" that I think look like barcodes or TV static. Underside of cap is NOT gilled but instead has white/cream coloured porous flesh.
No lookalikes other than other boletes, some may be toxic. just pay attention to the distinguishing features and never eat a mushroom you havent fully 100% identified. Consult an expert or a guide !!

Orange oak boletes (Leccinum aurantiacum) from a couple of weeks ago in France. These were plentiful, and there seemed to be less competition from other foragers for them than the Ceps. It's definitely worth learning slightly more obscure edible species, as there are many which rival the taste and texture of more sought after mushrooms. @markwildfood aka gallowaywildfoods has a brilliant write up on this mushroom and other Leccinum on his website. #mushroom #mushrooms #fungi #fungus #wildfoodlove #shrooms #nature #foraging #forage #foraged #walk #bushcraft #survival #outdoor #walking #hiking #outdoors #mycology #wildfood #survival #wilderness #woodland #woods #forest #countryside #outdoorsman #france (at Pays de la Loire, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHaFoZ9hfsx/?igshid=1vc0qc3ji91wc

A tweet from Velma Dinkley:
“I am not a medical professional, but, from what I know of fungi, I don’t think shoving a leccinum aurantiacum up your rectum would be the best idea.”
[in reply to “Sam”: “Alright but hear me out: Mushrooms, the big brown capped ones, as anal plugs?”]

5, 14, & 61 for those asks! I'm sending you love and good energy for your surgery and recovery
Thank you! ❤❤5. If you were a type of tree, what would you be?Is this the world's worst job interview? 🤣🤣 I have been asked this at a job interview, and the guy also asked me what ambition do I have that I would never tell anyone about. Buddy, if I had one of those, why the fuck would I tell you? An aspen tree, by the way. In Russian they're frequently called the trembling aspen, or the bitter aspen, and have a number of superstitions associated with them, both good and bad. Specifically aspen, not just any wooden stakes are driven through the heart of a vampire, or the body of a sorcerer, vurdalak or witch; any place where only aspen trees and mountain ash (rowan) trees grow must be cursed with bitter soil or otherwise cursed. But aspen tree branches will protect you on a long journey, and keep supernatural enemies and fever away. The True Cross is believed to be made from aspen, and the tree may have been cursed by Judas, Jesus, or Mary. Plus, my favorite edible mushroom, the Leccinum aurantiacum, grows under aspens.14. What is your current desktop picture? At work? A sci-fi space station (not the Death Star) being built in orbit around a strange planet. On my phone? Varric's tarot card from Inquisition. My laptop? Art of Ben and Hux @lia-rei drew for Care and Control. 61. Do you often read your horoscope? Not really. I don't believe in publicly available generic horoscopes, daily/weekly/what-have-you, nor do I really believe in individualized ones nor astrology as a whole, all that much. With some occasional caveats. I do believe in Tarot, though, because I think it's a good way to organize and analyze one's thoughts and concerns, and @theweddingofthefoxes does helpful readings, imho.
