I READ A BOOK: “To Die For” by Joyce Maynard

One of my favorite Nicole Kidman movies is To Die For. Hell, it’s one of my favorite Joaquin Phoenix, Casey Affleck, Illeana Douglas, and Matt Dillon movies. (Unfortunately, it’s not my favorite Kurtwood Smith movie - I’m looking at you, Robocop.) I recently pulled it out for another rewatch, only this time was the first time I paid attention to it being based on a novel. Loving the movie, and figuring I would naturally enjoy the book, I quickly found time to read Joyce Maynard’s To Die For.

Inspired by the Pamela Smart scandal, To Die For follows Suzanne Maretto, neé Stone, an overachieving news anchor wannabe and massive narcissist. With dreams of becoming the next Barbara Walters, Suzanne does whatever she can to succeed, including marrying the handsome and doting Larry Maretto. When Larry suggests that she start thinking about raising a family, which would pull her away from her local news channel career, Suzanne plots to get rid of him. She seduces Jimmy Emmett, a high school student born on the wrong side of the tracks, and convinces him and his friends Russell and Lydia to take part in murdering Larry, under the pretense that with Larry out of the picture, she and Jimmy can finally be together. With her husband murdered and a small-town scandal brewing around her, Suzanne finally gets the fame and attention she always craved. Her only mistake is thinking she could get away with it.

To Die For is written with each of the characters telling their sides of the story to an unseen interviewer. This style of storytelling is excellent for this type of story, given how outrageous and perfect for the tabloids it all is. Suzanne is a hilarious unreliable narrator, feigning innocence and bringing up how much she loved Larry, so she couldn’t have possibly planned his murder, while also tossing in a lie about his cocaine addiction to make sure she is the most sympathetic character. Maynard also includes perspectives from Larry and Suzanne’s family, along with Suzanne’s boss at the news station, to fill in the gaps that Suzanne conveniently leaves out.

To Die For was a lot of fun, filled with witty dialogue and the perfect line to end each chapter making you want more. It was also a lot more raunchy than I expected. The only other Joyce Maynard book I’ve read is Labor Day, which I enjoyed but also found to be incredibly saccharine. If you haven’t seen the movie To Die For, I highly recommend it, as it is one of the best satires of tabloid culture I’ve seen. Finding out that the book is just as deliciously fun as the movie makes it even better.

Suzanne Stone est prête à tout pour passer à la télévision et devenir célèbre. A vingt-cinq ans, elle a tenté sa chance partout mais n’a réussi à se faire embaucher que par une petite chaîne locale, et encore seulement pour un travail de secrétariat. Elle se marie avec Larry Maretto, chic type fou amoureux d’elle. Et décide de faire un reportage sur la vie des adolescents de sa ville. Lydia, mal dans sa peau, Russell et Jimmy, délinquants notoires, vont être entraînés malgré eux dans la folie meurtrière de cette jeune arriviste... Prête à tout (1992) est un roman choral. Chaque chapitre donne voix à un personnage différent qui va raconter l’histoire et les différents rebondissements avec sa manière de les voir, sa voix et sa personnalité : Suzanne, ses parents, les parents de son mari, les adolescents et leurs parents... Cette multiplication de points de vue et la personnalité perverse et vide de Suzanne sont les atouts de ce roman dont on connaît la tragédie des les premières pages du livre même si on en apprend les tenants et les aboutissements au fur et à mesure de la lecture.

Originally a teen star (generally in “troubled youth” roles), who has since matured into one of Hollywood’s most enjoyable actors to watch on screen with a remarkable versatility in his acting range, tall, lean and handsome Matt Dillon was born in February 1964 in New Rochelle, New York, and was identified by pure chance. Talent scouts were roaming the halls of Hommocks School, spied the good-looking Dillon, and asked him to attend a casting call. He showed up, put on a swagger and petulant attitude for the casting director and landed his 1st film role, appearing in Over the Edge (1979), a “troubled-youth” film about bored Colorado teenagers fighting developers, their parents and the police. His next role was as a teen bully who turns into his comeuppance in the “truly feel-good” movie My Bodyguard (1980). He was the object of teenage female desire in Little Darlings (1980), and followed that as a poor boy eloping with a rich girl in Liar’s Moon (1982).

Dillon was now a hot property, and his next three film roles were in quality productions of best selling novels by author S.E. Hinton that cemented him as the US’ #1 teen star. First he starred as a fatherless country boy in Tex (1982), then he headlined a cast of superb young actors, including Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze, in the moving The Outsiders (1983), and finally he was back in trouble once a lot more in the superb Rumble Fish (1983).

As his seems matured, Dillon moved into broader roles such as the smooth-talking Brooklyn teenager conning everyone at a posh Florida country club in The Flamingo Kid (1984). He made his first foray into adult action with Gene Hackman in the thriller _Target (1985/I)_ , followed by a lot of B-grade romantic efforts, before striking gold with the critics with his performance in the uncompromising ‘Gus van Sant’ film about drug addicts, Drugstore Cowboy (1989). Unfortunately, his next few films fell back into a degree of mediocrity until another intriguing performance as a young schizophrenic in The Saint of Fort Washington (1993), then another romantic comedy role in Mr. Wonderful (1993). He worked again with van Sant as naive husband Larry Maretto opposite murderous Nicole Kidman in the icy thriller To Die For (1995).

Dillon remained busy and turned in excellent performances in the sexy thriller of murder and double-crosses, Wild Things (1998). He was hilarious as a sleazy private eye lovestruck by Cameron Diaz in the box-office smash There’s Something About Mary (1998). He starred in the black comedy One Night at McCool’s (2001), made his feature film directorial debut with City of Ghosts (2002), had a working day that goes from bad to worse in Employee of the Month (2004). And, for his work in the Best Imagine Academy Award winner Crash (2004/I), Dillon received a long-overdue Oscar nomination, as Best Supporting Actor.

Nicole Kidman, 20 Haziran 1967’de Honolulu, Hawaii, ABD’de dünyaya gelmiştir. Tam adı Nicole Mary Kidman’dır. Aslen Avustralya’lıdır ve Avustralya ve Amerika Birleşik Devletleri çifte vatandaşı. Annesi Janelle Kidman hemşiredir . Babası Anthony Kidman, biyokimyager, klinik psikoloğu ve yazardır. Ayrıca bir kız kardeşi vardır.

Aradan bir yıl sonra, Tom Cruise ve Robert Duvall ile birlikte rol aldığı, “Days Of Thunder” adlı filmden sonra , 24 Aralık 1990’da Tom Cruise ile evlenmişlerdir.

Evliliğin tazeliğinde henüz bir kaç ay geçtikten sonra, Dustin Hoffman ve Bruce Willis ile başrollerini paylaştığı , “Billy Bathgate“adlı filmde oyunculuğuna devam etmek için kamera karşısına geçmiştir. Ardından kariyeri için bir adım daha ileriye atacak filmi olan , Ron Howard’ın tarihsel filmi “Far and Away“de eşi Tom Cruise ile birlikte rol almıştır. Bu film büyük sükse yapmış , hem eleştirmenlerden olumlu not almış hem de iyi bir ticari başarı elde etmiştir.

1995 yılında süper kahramanlardan Batman serisi için “Batman Forever” adlı filmde rol almıştır. Bu filmin ardından başarısının ödül almasına sebep olan film , “To Die For” adlı filmde yırtıcı, şöhret hayalleri kuran ev kadını rolünü canlandırmıştır. Bu film ona Komedi/Müzikal Filmi En İyi Kadın Oyuncu dalında Altın Küre kazandırmıştır .

1997 yılında eşi Tom Cruise ile Stanley Kubrick’in erotik psikolojik gerilim filmi “Gözü Tamamen Kapalı/Eyes Wide Shut” adlı filmde rol almışlardır.

2002 yapımı olan”Saatler/The Hours“da Meryl Streep ve Julianne Moore ile başrollerini paylaştığı bu filmde canlandırdığı, başarılı rolüyle Altın Küre‘yi bir kez daha kazanarak Oscar‘a aday gösterildi.
