Day 5 Wed. May 31. Salt Lake City to Wendover to Elko to Wimmemucca, 600 km.
Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and the eighth-largest terminal lake in the world. Terminal means, although it has three rivers feeding into it, it has no outlet other than evaporation. The result is a briny body of water, saltier than the ocean. The results can be seen and felt all the way to the Nevada border.
When I woke up this morning, I thought I was in Phoenix. A hot, dry desert city surrounded by mountains.
As I drove west to Nevada, however, I saw something I had never seen before. Briny sand and stretching salt flats all the way to the border. Just before reaching Nevada I visited the Bonneyville salt flats raceway where so many land speed records have been set. I couldn't resist, I rode most of the way back at 200 kph.
I missed the Welcome to Nevada sign because I stopped into Wendover, Utah for gas. Crossing into West Wendover, Nevada, it was immediately obvious I was in Nevada. Population 4,492, five casinos - and one enterprising pawn shop, although by the look of the sign and the parking lot, it is having a slow month. And even the gas stations have slot machines.
As you hit Nevada, the elevation starts to rise as you climb the Pilot mountain range. I finally made it through a mountain pass today at the Pequop Summit 6,960 ft., nearly 3,000 ft higher than Salt Lake City. The result is much more greenery and comfortably cooler temperatures.
Unfortunately, there is no other way here from there than via Interstate 80. Long, a little monotonous, an 80 mph speed limit, and way too many trucks. But all ended well in Winnemucca, population 8, 431, to a cold beer and a beautiful desert sunset.

tell me abt your fake indie film guys ok?
ok soi don't have like. full plot for them yet it's mainly vibes but I do have some background info for the characters and things but I'll start with vibes to keep it simple 👍 read more bc I want to ramble <33
a lot of the story relates back to relationships (both platonic and romantic) and themes of loneliness. it's about three kids who are on summer break after their junior year in high school. the trio travel away from home for a few weeks together. it turns into learning more about themselves and the people around them than just a vacation. they end up staying in the area around wallowa lake, oregon.
there's three main characters, starting with trent. a lot of the focus is on him for the exposition. his mom died when he was nine and his dad left him with babysitters and weekly deposits until he was 13 and deemed well enough to be on his own with his dad vacationing full time. he doesn't come back for the summer anymore, so Trent decides to use some of the money he's saved from his dad to go to wallowa with cassidy and ricky. he's always been interested in the arts and videography. he was given a video camera when he was little and has never let go of it since.
cassidy, or cass/cassy, is the first person asked to go on the trip with trent. at first they wanted to go alone but felt it would be wrong not to include ricky. cassy is on her school's cheer team and is raised by a mother who wants to live a better life through her only daughter. her father is also out of the picture. cassy is the most outgoing of the group, but still needs time to slow down and see the world around her. the pressure her mother put on her catches up to her as she goes low contact over the break. she wants to go into prop design or anything behind the scenes for theater.
ricky is our last little guy. him and trent were friends since middle school and trent was ricky's only friend for a while. he met cassidy through trent, though trent was introduced to cassidy through a mutual friend named teresa (who sadly isn't that important to the story because i really like her. she's chill.) ricky was isolated since he was little, only interacting with other people in the house and occasionally other kids on the block. he was homeschooled until 7th grade where he had to completely relearn how he makes friends. trent introduced him to some bands he likes during one of their art classes together and bonded over that. he's thinking of dropping out of high school before his senior year.
the story starts in winnemucca, nevada, but most of it takes place either on the drive to or in wallowa city and its lake. trent realizes how lonely he's become since his mom passed and him and ricky bond over it. cassy's issues with her self worth resurface and she tries to come to terms with not being what her mom wants. ricky struggles to connect with the world around him and tries to find ways to make the loneliness more bearable.
and finally after three days, here's the art to go with it. from left to right we have ricky, trent and cassy.

hello and welcome to my oc blog!! i have so many projects and so many characters so feel free to ask about literally anything and everything. it may take me a while to finish asks but i always see them and try to answer them as soon as i can! some of the information present on my main blog will be transferred to here so you'll see a few repeats as i actually start working on the blog.
my current projects:
shadow fields: shadow fields is a collection of different stories in the shadow fields township. from the disappearance of charles ellis to the possession of abel greene and the vivisection of eric laura vallery, many stories can be told. there is no one reason and no right answer.
the shadow fields sun bears: the township baseball team. our main character, atlas, is presented with the issue of a failing team. the sun bears start out as a good team but they quickly fall into a slump when they begin to ignore their god. this god is present to the human eye. you can see her at the edge of the stands or vanishing around the corner back into the locker room. she makes the grass hiss and sounds like wooden chimes clinking together in the wind.
this god appears most often to atlas, a newcomer who has to hold up the weight of the team by himself. after their most recent drought, the god presents herself to atlas but doesn't say anything he can understand. its up to him to interpret it and try to help the team himself.
moonlight hills: with no rhyme or reason- mayor midas drops dead. an unexplained and unfinished murder where midas only dies of blood loss. its up to adenine scott to watch over the autopsy and begin investigation into who killed mayor midas. its a cycle. each mayor for the past thirty years has dropped dead unexpectedly. adenine is the one to tie it together- to uncover how and why the town breathes.
the grey lake: three kids trying to relax before senior year leave winnemucca, nevada and travel to wallowa, oregon for summer break. the story is styled in a way to make it similar to what you think of when you think "indie film." trent realizes how lonely he's become since his mom passed. cassy's issues with her self worth resurface and she tries to come to terms with not being what her mom wants. ricky struggles to connect with the world around him after thirteen years of homeschooling and together they try to take a break and figure things out.
the house by the sea: three kids living in an orphanage on the seaside leave their home and travel by train out of the city on a journey of self discovery. their caretaker marnie has to find them while still keeping the other kids safe, though the story mostly revolves around ella, joey, and david- the three kids who ran away.
geophilomorpha: forming in 2002 and releasing their first album (self titled) the same year, geophilomorpha hit the punk rock scene hard. on lead vocals is caine butcher, one of the bands founders. on guitar is eddie mortan, floyd marilyn on the upright bass, matthew cadorna on electric bass, and on drums is jeremiah ashley, the other founder. the band has been in the queer rock scene for years, making albums about personal experiences regarding addiction, angels, transsexuality, and bloody noses.
ode to aphrodite: inspired by the poem made by sappho of the same name, ode to aphrodte formed in 2008 with the help of the members of geophilomorpha and released their first album in 2009. inspired by afro-punk voices like pure hell and fishbone, as well as classical jazz and blues, the bands vocalist and bassist thelma richard-ashley wishes to continue uplifting voices from music artists of color like herself. ode to aphrodite is a tribute to lesbianism and black joy. though their music can be on the heavier side instrumentally, their main goal is to create and share a meaningful message.
the exhibitionists: starting in 1996 and releasing their first album in the same year, the exhibitionists is an electronic and industrial band founded by seth (vocals and keyboard) and stanley davis (guitar). the twins, inspired by artists like skinny puppy, tool, ministry, and nine inch nails, welcomed jane evans (bass) and audrey kim (drums) to help make the music they loved. the band stands out from most others- making dark and ambient electronic music great for stage performances. with an almost cultish fanbase, the exhibitionists quickly got their name out in the electronic music scene.
collaborations:
deciding exousia: founded in 1993, deciding exousia is a nu metal band, releasing their first album, hermeneutics, in 1994. with a harsh sound and large group, exousia took local basements by storm. founded by stella jansen (rhythm guitar), sebastian dalton (lead vocals), trevor neilson (bass), liam morrison (drums), and kevin hayes (lead guitar). eventually graduating to the stage (and bigger basements), they introduced new members to the group. damon bauer on keyboard, ethan walker for orchestral accompaniment, blair hyde on woodwinds, zachary quinn on percussion, and wyatt payne on synths.
the springfield prairie dogs: the first of me and erin's two fan teams, the springfield illinois prairedogs are a collaboration between me and her. there's so much to say about them, so ask anything and everything.
the austin bats: the same goes for the bats. they're located in austin texas rather than illinois, and is the rival team to the prairie dogs.

The Telegram Game
These documents are immediately sent by courier horse to Pueblo Ola, a stop on the railroad linking Salt Lake City with the capital of Monterrey, taking 5 days to get there. From there, telegrams are sent to the Interior Ministry and the President’s office and the courier boarded the train for Monterrey. In 20 hours he was at Winnemucca, the TAF headquarters on the Deseret side of the Sierra Nevadas, and in Monterrey 30 hours after that.

Frog Lake and Lake Winnemucca Lake are located off of Highway 88 in Alpine County. And for alpine lakes these are both fantastic. Clear cool water surrounded by pine trees and granite peaks with bits of snow still left covering them. We hiked out to these lakes last July when the wildflowers were blooming and the trails were packed with fellow adventurers. The bright blue sky gave us the perfect setting for the endless views of the beautiful land. I really have loved that we decided to start hiking more off of Highway 88 when we go to the sierra nevada’s as there is so much beauty there and new things to explore.

Water Softeners Water loosening up takes hard water and makes it sensitive by clearing out separated minerals (calcium, magnesium, and iron) from water. Smoke from Western wildfires through much of MT and NV. Highway 80 is open to Sacramento. Juliette’s family evacuated from home in Camino. Cousin Leslie and Gary from home in Placerville. Haley reports heavy smoke from Superior fire (Greenwood?) near Gunflint Trail but rains should help there.
Good news- 5 manners of Afghanistan’s women’s robotic team were evacuated and accepted by Mexico. Wise decision MX.

Day 6: Thursday, June 1 - Winnemucca, Nevada to Reno to Susanville, California to Redding. 643 km. Left Wiinemucca (pop 8431, elev 4295') at 7:00 AM and rode I 84 to Reno to visit with my friends Guy and Pat. Did I mention the speed limit here is 80 mph. Got there by 10:00 with almost half my days mileage under my belt. On the way, lots more dessert scrubbrush and scattered ranches. I am constantly amazed how people carve a living out of this topography. As for Reno (pop 265,000, elev 4,505', casinos, tourism and tech.), there's no friends like old (biking) friends. Thanks, Guy and Pat, for an awesome visit. And for the afternoon route tips. Took off for California through the High Eastern Sierra Nevada Foothills on Nev 395 and 44 through Susanville to Redding. As you climb, it gets cooler, wetter, and greener, and you see lots more farms and ranches. Also, there are lots more snow-capped mountains, lakes, trees, and rivers. And unfortunately, signs of forest fires. My ride topped out in Lassen Volcanic National Park (tops out at 10,460') where, fortunately, this time, there was a ride around my third closed off road over a mountain peak.

Franny Robinson and Daniel Maitland often cover this song at Dara & Danny shows. When they perform this song they substitute all of the place names in the first verse with places in Alaska, Georgia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. And occasionally a couple other places in the song, to celebrate their Alaska Native (Daniel) and Southeast Asian (Franny) heritage, and Georgia, where they met and became best friends in middle school.
They even sing this sing a smidge faster than the Hank Snow recording. Where does Franny even breathe in this song? Who knows.
Franny sings lead on it and Daniel comes in with harmony on some lines.
The first verse is actually more difficult than people think because Franny is pronouncing these city and town names from Khmer, Lao, Vietnamese, and various native Alaskan languages without as much of her natural twang as the English. She isn’t pronouncing them perfectly because doing so does throw off the rhythm some, but she’s consciously pronouncing them close to correctly and rapidly flipping from one language to another.
These are the lyrics Franny and Daniel sing when they do the song:
I was totin' my pack along the dusty Winnemucca road,
When along came a semi with a high an' canvas-covered load. "If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride." And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside. He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand. And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"
I've been everywhere, man. I've been everywhere, man. Crossed the desert's bare, man. I've breathed the mountain air, man. Of travel I've had my share, man. I've been everywhere.
I've been to:

 I've been everywhere, man.
I've been everywhere, man.
Crossed the desert's bare, man.
I've breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I've had my share, man.
I've been everywhere.

Sarah Winnemucca
Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins (born Thocmentony, meaning "Shell Flower; also seen as "Tocmetone" in Northern Paiute;[1] c. 1844 – October 16, 1891) was a Northern Paiute author, activist and educator.
Winnemucca was born near Humboldt Lake, Nevada, into an influential Paiute family who led their community in pursuing friendly relations with the arriving groups of Anglo-American settlers. She was sent to study in a Catholic school in Santa Clara, California. When the Paiute War erupted between the Pyramid Lake Paiute and the settlers, including some who were friends of the Winnemucca family, Sarah and some of her family traveled to San Francisco and Virginia City to escape the fighting. They made a living performing onstage as "A Paiute Royal Family." In 1865, while the Winnemucca family was away, their band was attacked by the US cavalry, who killed 29 Paiutes, including Sarah's mother and several members of her extended family.
Subsequently, Winnemucca became an advocate for the rights of Native Americans, traveling across the US to tell Anglo-Americans about the plight of her people. When the Paiute were interned in a concentration camp at Yakima, Washington after the Bannock War, she traveled to Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress and the executive branch for their release. She also served US forces as a messenger, interpreter, and guide, and as a teacher for imprisoned Native Americans.
Winnemucca published Life Among the Paiutes: Their Wrongs and Claims (1883), a book that is both a memoir and history of her people during their first 40 years of contact with European Americans. It is considered the "first known autobiography written by a Native American woman."[2] Anthropologist Omer Stewart described it as "one of the first and one of the most enduring ethnohistorical books written by an American Indian," frequently cited by scholars.[3] Following the publication of the book, Winnemucca toured the Eastern United States, giving lectures about her people in New England, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. She returned to the West, founding a private school for Native American children in Lovelock, Nevada.
Since the late 20th century, scholars have paid renewed attention to Winnemucca for her contributions. In 1993, she was inducted posthumously into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame.[4] In 2005, the state of Nevada contributed a statue of her by sculptor Benjamin Victor to the National Statuary Hall Collection in the U.S. Capitol.
Tumblr media
Winnemucca's legacy has been controversial. Some biographers have wished to remember her primarily for her activism and social work to better the conditions for her people, while others have criticized her for her tendency to exaggerate her social status among the Paiute. Among the Paiute, her assistance to the US military at a time when they were at war with the Paiute has been criticized, as has her advocacy for assimilation of Natives to Anglo-American culture. But the Paiute have also recognized her social work and activism for indigenous rights.[5]
