California Snowpack
Howard has prepared a report on the snowpack in the Washington Cascades. I thought that I might provide an update on the snowpack in the California mountains traversed by the PCT. We had an unusually warm autumn and the precipitation that fell was often rain. As a result, on January 1st, the Northern Sierra/Trinity Mountains snowpack was a paltry 32% of normal. The Central Sierra recorded 28% and the Southern Sierra 20% of normal.
The series of atmospheric rivers that have focused on California since have begun to make a rather dramatic improvement in the snowpack. By February 1, Northern Sierra/Trinity Mountains were at 63%, Central Sierra was 54%, and the Southern Sierra was 40%. This is a dramatic improvement that has continued for the first 19 days of the month . . . as of February 19, things looked like this:
Tumblr media
From all reports, this coming week will continue to help the snowpack approach normal.
Big Bear Lake in Southern California is reporting a snowpack of 105% of normal. Mt. Laguna has forecast highs well above freezing now and through the coming week.

Small pines fighting for a foothold in some rough shale rocks along the hiking trail to the Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout in Sierra County California. I captured this image in late day golden hour light as I descended the trail on this amazing hike last summer.
As the top is at 8500 feet, it's a later season hike. I tried it two years ago in mid-June and didn't make it, lost the trail in the snow on the way down (still don't know how that happened), and ended up trekking much longer than I planned on trekking, for a short time wondering if I'd taken an unplanned camping trip. Bodega Eguren Ugarte, Spain (No. 4)
Many of our vineyards are located at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, on steep slopes, where erosion and washing of the land is frequent.
To avoid soil loss, one of the most important environmental problems in agriculture today, we evaluate the adaptation of different formulations of green covers to our vineyards.
The preliminary results have been very positive, especially in vineyards settled in fresh lands, where it also allows to control the vigor of the plants in a very positive way.
Together with the Basque research institute Neiker, we are preparing a cartography of the soils where we cultivate our vineyards, located in the Alava municipalities of Labastida and Páganos. This study aims to know well the terroir where our grapes are raised in order to extract their maximum expression.
All our studies, as well as many others, are produced on a small scale in our microvinification room. There, the grapes are destemmed, vatted in mini 30L tanks, pressed, and bottled, following strict protocols in order to observe the results of the experiments on final wines. After a short time in the bottle, the wines are evaluated by a tasting panel made up of expert winemakers, colleagues from wineries in the area.

Man I miss the rain, it's been years of drought in Northern California. Had to move a bit east and it's nothing but snow, I love the sound of raindrops against my window. It's probably one of the few things that truly make me feel at ease. Snow, a newer experience to me in my 31 years of life, is the most miserable thing on this planet outside of Chrismas movies and postcards. Anyways here's a little chop I did, not the first or the last, and certainly not the best because this was just a quick cookup. Still, the sample speaks for itself it is just a few bars of melancholy and soul.

Starting the PCT - Pacific national crest trail, CA, April 2023
on the first day of my PCT thru-hike attempt last year everyone quickly realised that the main challenges of the desert; heat and water access, would be greatly mitigated in '23 because of the record snowfall. there would be ample water access throughout the desert, with the longest dry section being a mere 13 miles.
this did of course mean that doing the sierra nevada immediately after the desert would be next to impossible because most resupply stops would still be snowed in.
in the end I would quit the PCT at kennedy meadows because I got the chance to buy a house in my ideal location in amsterdam. while I did try to come back and restart the trail in north california in july, I quickly found out how important the people hiking along with you are when you hit a boring section like the logging forests of northern california.
while i did hike a bit more in Lassen national park (really underrated US park) with someone I met in sacramento, I quit after that to start working on the house instead.

“I am happy to share photos of a rarely reported species, Diacheopsis kowalskii, which to date has only been found in a few mountainous areas in Europe, western USA, and Canada. This is a nivicolous species, meaning that it develops near the edges of melting snow during spring. Diacheopsis kowalskii has gorgeous iridescence on the peridium (outer membrane covering the spores), and tiny white needle-like crystals, which you can see more clearly in the close-up. These were on bare dead wood (alder i think) at Yuba Pass, (elevation about 6700ft) in the northern California Sierra.” - by Alison Pollack

Bodega Eguren Ugarte, Spain (No. 3)
At Eguren Ugarte we are committed to applied research and development, leading different cutting-edge projects in our Rioja vineyards. Our lines of research are mainly focused on environmental sustainability and in-depth knowledge of our vineyards, all with the ultimate goal of excellence and improvement of the quality of our products.
In this line, studies of early defoliation have been carried out in Tempranillo vineyards in glass and trellis.
This innovative early defoliation technique, which runs around flowering, makes the passage from flower to fruit ("fruit set") imperfect, making the clusters smaller and looser. In this way, we obtain more homogeneous, more concentrated and higher quality fruits.
The first results of this experimentation are very encouraging, both manually and through the use of mechanical defoliators, in the case of trellised vineyards. Much looser clusters are obtained, with less incidence of diseases, and with better content in color and polyphenols.
Looking for the maximum knowledge of our vineyards, we carry out field measurements using new technologies, such as remote sensing (aerial flights with infrared cameras) as well as other soil sensors, grape color, etc.
Our goal is to acquire as much information as possible about our vineyards, which allows us to extract the maximum potential and quality from each small part of them.

“Exceptionally rare animal spotted in California for only 2nd time in 100 years. Shock, excitement as second wolverine in 101 years seen in California. Wolverine spotted in California for only the second time in a century.”

Tumblr media Tumblr media
‘A trio of rare wolverine sightings in California has been verified by scientists, marking just the second time in a century the animal has been spotted in the Golden State. All three sightings were reported by different people last month in various parts of the Eastern Sierra Mountains. One was seen in Yosemite National Park and two in the Inyo National Forest, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Thursday [1 June 2023]. [...] [T]here are thought to be only about 300 wolverines in the country [Lower 48, contiguous United States]. [...] The last time a wolverine was spotted in California was documented by scientists between 2008 and 2018 in the Tahoe National Forest. Before then, the last sightings were in the 1920s.’

The closest known healthy/permanent populations of wolverine are far away in the Northern Rockies in Idaho and the North Cascades in Washington.
One of these wolverines was seen at Yosemite National Park, which is about 450 miles/720 kilometers away from the wolverine populations in the Rockies northeast of Boise, 500 miles/800 kilometers away from the Wasatch Mountains near Logan, and about 1,000 miles/1,600 kilometers away from North Cascades National Park.
