RIIL announces exciting changes for 2022-23 esports season

    WARWICK, R.I. (September 15, 2022) – The Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) is excited to offer a more cost-effective and more inclusive opportunity for its member schools to participate in esports for the 2022-23 school year.  With a renewed focus on the educational benefits of participation, the RIIL has been working with the North America Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF) to create a new league structure and championships in a range of esports titles. NASEF shares the core values and mission of the RIIL to provide education-based opportunities for the students of Rhode Island while adhering to the governing values of equity, fair play, honorable competition and good sportsmanship. NASEF’s model connects gameplay and competition to meaningful education around life and career skills.

    RIIL eSports competition will be hosted on the Ultimate Gaming Championship (UGC) platform, which is recognized for its ease-of-use and is supported by a highly responsive development team. The RIIL aims to combine competition with education about career pathways in the esports world and beyond, making high school esports a place where students prepare for global career opportunities while engaging in interscholastic competition.

    Based upon early enrollment activity, the number of registered schools has already increased from past years, and the RIIL is confident that this new structure will be give more member schools the opportunity to engage their students and join the RIIL esports movement.

     “The RIIL is excited to be working with NASEF as they will help us provide additional educational-based opportunities for our member schools and students,” said RIIL Executive Director Mike Lunney. “We are equally excited about working with UGC, as they offer a first-class platform for our esports competition and championships. The RIIL is committed to expanding school-based opportunities to allow all aspects of the school population to connect with their schools in a meaningful educational space.”

Plus, participating students will go ‘Beyond the Game’ and learn about college pathways and esports career possibilities including shoutcasting, streaming, design, event management, and more,” said Gerald Solomon, Founder and Executive Director of NASEF. “We’re excited to work with RIIL to leverage scholastic esports to help students to thrive and grow.”

If all they want is a hot guy, they're kind of disregarding the potential of a BLACK MAN being seen as angelic and supportive, something that's pretty much never seen in any form of media. What we're missing out on is that, not another hottie. The fact he's attractive is a great bonus.

Honestly, that is a large source of my salt - that I’ve genuinely only seen posts (and a lot of posts) about how he’s cooler and more attractive than Mercy, and a ‘silver fox,’ etc, etc, hard-focus on his attractiveness, and additionally that they are always framed in terms of replacing her rather than adding him.

But also: I feel like we have two types of brown men in Overwatch right now in terms of how they are represented as characters, and those are MURDERER (Reaper, Doomfist) and CINNAMON ROLL (Lucio), and I feel like adding one more to the latter category is... maybe not the best way to go about representation, necessarily?

When will you notice I migrated again.

Let's be real. He wouldn't fall into the fandom misinterpretation of Lucio being a cinnamon roll. He'd have his own entire category of being some "bad guy" because the fandom would actually bother to acknowledge and place blame for the awful thing that happened to Reaper.

But I can see why people would want a Mercy replacement. Her backstory isn't that interesting and the points that are meant to make her so are dunked in the white saviour trope.

Yeah - and, honestly, I wish some of that was addressed (eg. that it’s kinda sketchy to be implied to be pursuing a romantic relationship, if voice lines are to be believed, with someone whose life depends on you, eg. maybe follow up on the references to the fact that she fucked something up with bringing Reaper back, eg. her conflict with Ana over the useage of her biotic technology), because it feels like she had some interesting stuff going on (esp her previous voice lines with Pharah that were datamined and then removed) that was kind of passed over to turn her into a more palatable and easily-likeable hero-type character.

Sketchy doctor lady that’s made questionable decisions and potentially fucked people over with them and has to suffer the consequences, plus the resulting conflict over the use of power and technology would have been more interesting, but instead we had to have kinda sketchy het romance and a lot of simplification.

Like, there are definitely more interesting characters in Overwatch than Mercy as she now stands (playing Ana and D. Va and Sym has so much more flavor), and I think we hardcore need more positive POC representation in Overwatch (esp when literally all of Talon is POC except the one white lady whose skin literally turned purple...), it just... really rubs me the wrong way, the specific way I see people going about prioritizing their attraction to a dude in this context, and using it specifically to dunk on a woman.
