"Bodyguard" || James Valdez x Reader (PART 1)
Tumblr media
Summary: You are Camila Vargas' daughter and you're used to your mother's meetings with people who don't seem trustworthy at all. One day, however, your mom invites you to one of these meetings along with a man, James, who she says will become your bodyguard.
I apologize in advance for any possible grammatical errors, English is not my native language.
Pairings: James Valdez x Reader
Word count: 1,5k
Warnings: Swear words, description of sexual content
Mi amor, I need to introduce you to someone.
This was the message I had received from my mother, Camila Vargas. The tone of the message was neutral, but it didn't bode well. I walked through the long hallway of our villa, arriving at the door of her office. I knew perfectly well what my mother's job was, but I had never wanted to get involved, and neither did she feel the need for it.
I knocked on the door twice, and from inside, I heard a voice telling me to come in. I had never been in that room before, and at first glance, it looked like the typical office of an accountant. Standing next to my mom, there was a man I had never seen before. He didn't seem like one of those men with questionable faces that I often saw around the house.
"Mi pequeña, I wanted to introduce you to James Valdez. James is one of my trusted men, and he will be tasked with being your bodyguard," said my mom.
My bodyguard? I looked at the man, and from his expression, he wasn't thrilled about babysitting me and following me around.
"Is something going on?" I wasn't stupid; if things were calm, she would never need someone to protect me.
"Let's just say I'm working on something. Anyway, that's all for now. James, your job starts now," and with that, my mom dismissed us.
I left the room with James behind me, and as I walked down the hallway that led me to that room, I turned to get a better look at James.
"So, you're my new babysitter?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Seems like it," he replied, trying to look elsewhere. He wasn't thrilled, and it was obvious.
"I'm sorry you're forced to do this; it's clear you're not happy," I said sincerely. He seemed surprised that I spoke to him so candidly.
"It's not so terrible to take you out for food and shopping," he said, winking. At that moment, I was quite irritated.
"Do you think that just because I'm Camila Vargas's daughter, all I do in my free time is shopping? Darling, you've got me all wrong," I replied angrily and quickly walked away.
He ran after me trying to catch up, but I reached my room first and locked the door. I couldn't stand the idea that he thought that of me. If he thought it, anyone could.
"Open this door," he said firmly from the other side. I didn't respond to him.
"Y/N, open this damn door, or I'll kick it down," he said again. In the end, I gave in and opened it.
"Thanks," he said, forcing his way in and locking the door behind him. Then he grabbed me by the arms and pushed me against the wall.
"Listen, kid," his face was inches from mine, "I have no desire to make this job harder than it is. I respect your mother; she entrusted me with the most important thing to her, and that's fine. But you're still a kid, and you need to learn that you can't behave like this with me." His words hit me hard and made my head spin. I didn't actually know if it was spinning because of his words or because he was so close to me and in a rather inappropriate position. I nodded, and he let me go. I was nervous; how dare he call me a kid?
"I want to sleep now," I told him, moving away from him and getting under the covers. He settled in the chair at my desk. If I told him to leave, he would get angry again, so I tried not to think about it and tried to sleep.
***
I woke up groggy. I didn't know how long I had been sleeping. As soon as I woke up, I saw James in the same position I had left him, and he was staring at me. "Good morning, princess, slept well?" He was mocking me. I was starting not to like him. I huffed and got out of bed. I was all disheveled and needed to freshen up.
"I'm going to take a shower," I said, stretching. I noticed he was watching me, so I looked at him too.
"Want to come with me?" I teased him. He looked at me with a mix of hatred and excitement. After all, he was still a man. I shrugged and headed towards the shower.
"Keep the door open," he said firmly. "Forget it," I snapped.
"Fine," he replied, getting up and following me into the bathroom. He leaned against a cabinet and gestured for me to do what I needed to do. I rolled my eyes.
"Fine, I'll keep the door open, but get out of here," I finally replied. He went back to sit on the desk chair. I undressed behind a corner and wrapped a very large towel around myself. I only took it off when I was in the shower with the door closed. The warm water was so relaxing that I stayed there for a while. Maybe too long, because at one point, I heard a knock on the shower door.
"Oh my God, everything's fine, I'm just relaxing," I replied to the figure of James tapping on the shower. He backed away, and I tried to finish what I was doing quickly before he came back to bother me. After getting out of the shower, I dried off quickly behind the corner and then went to my room. I took out some underwear and a very short and colorful summer dress.
"Can you at least turn around?" I said to James, and he did. I made sure there were no mirror surfaces where he could peek, and then I quickly got dressed. "Done," I told him, and he turned around, still looking at me. His expression ran all over my body. I felt a bit uncomfortable, so I was the first to look away. Then I grabbed the hairdryer from the bathroom and started drying my hair. At one point, I saw James behind me; he took the hairdryer from my hand and started drying my hair. I didn't know how to react to that situation, so I let him do it.
"Thank you," I said at the end, and he didn't say anything. I looked at the clock; it was almost eight, and my stomach wanted to be filled.
"Do you want to go grab something to eat?" I asked him, and he nodded.
He insisted on taking his car and driving me to a place. When we arrived, I noticed it was a typical American diner. We sat at a table and ordered food. The waitress almost had a heart attack seeing James, as if he were the most handsome man in the world.
"Hey, look who it is," a voice behind me said. It was my ex-boyfriend, one of the people I hated the most in the world. "Hi," I barely replied.
"And who's this, your new boyfriend? Are you fucking?" He said. He was starting to irritate me.
"Listen, asshole, do you leave by yourself or do I have to make you leave? I'm not as nice as I seem," James replied.
"Ohhh, so she really gave it to you. Man, you're lucky, she didn't want to do anything with me, using the excuse of virginity," he laughed.
"Maybe ask yourself some questions then," I said, rolling my eyes.
James suddenly stood up, grabbing him by the collar and shaking him.
"Wasn't I clear enough?" His face was inches from my ex-boyfriend's, and it was quite menacing. My ex began to tremble in fear.
"Sorry, man, I'll leave you guys alone," he said, still trembling, and quickly ran away. "You associated yourself with a guy like that?" James said to me, but noticing that I was embarrassed by what my ex-boyfriend had said in front of him, he dropped the subject, and silence fell between us. When the food arrived, I attacked the plate without looking at James and finished it very quickly.
"It was very good," I said only, still looking down. James remained silent, but after a few seconds, he began to speak. "Listen, Y/N, you did well not to go with that guy. You would have regretted it for sure," his words were understanding and comforting, and they made me feel good.
"Anyway, I didn't think you were still a virgin," he added as if it were a normal thing to say.
"What do you mean?" I asked, curious about his statement.
"I mean, you're a beautiful girl, you could have anyone at your feet," he said. "Once again, you've judged me as someone I'm not," I replied, but this time I wasn't angry.
"It seems so," he replied, smiling at me. It was the first time he smiled, and I understood why the waitress had felt faint when we arrived. He was really handsome. I tried to brush off these thoughts, but he seemed to notice. "What's wrong, do you like my smile?" he said, winking, just like I had done earlier inviting him to come into the shower with me. I looked away. At one point, I heard the beep of his phone. He looked at the phone.
"Okay Y/N, we have a problem. I need to take you away from here, to an isolated and safe place," he said, suddenly becoming serious.
I didn't understand what was happening, but with him, I felt safe.

Based on your recent answer about why you watch BL in which you mentioned many narratives like to punish lesbians with death, I wanted to prompt you to speak on that a bit more if you're willing. I will wait here chin in hands for when/if this is interesting to you because it's a bugbear of mine and I'd love to read your thoughts!
Hello Twiggy! (can I call you that? What should we shorten your url to? t-t?)
Anyway, I would be happy to speak more on that!
To establish my lens, I am a Westerner, I grew up with no queer elders, and did not really realize I was queer until after I graduated college, so my experience with queer media was limited at best. I know there are films and television out there where the sapphics live, and there are films and televisions where I am completely fine with a queer character dying. I am not a “if any queer character dies they are burying the gays!” kind of person.
Now, I’ll admit that when I wrote that in my answer, I was mostly saying it based on knowledge of the tumblr discourse I’ve observed over the past decade I have been on this fucking website. In other words, I didn’t know the full extent of the issue, because to be perfectly honest, despite the absurd amount of television I do watch, seeing queer women in my shows has been few and far between. I don’t think I saw a girl kiss another girl until I stumbled upon the YouTube web-series Carmilla in high school. SO, your ask required me to do a little bit more research.
Here is a link to an article listing 230 dead lesbian and bisexual characters and their causes of death which include toxic envelope glue in Seinfeld??? The list is so long that the article is split up in to FOUR PAGES!
Tumblr media
Here are a couple of names from shows I either have seen or recognize:
Tara Maclay in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Lexa in The 100
Tosha in The Wire
Poussey in Orange is the New Black (which I will absolutely never forgive this show for)
Toshiko Sato in Torchwood
June Stahl in Sons of Anarchy
Patty O’Farrel and Veronica Cortes in La Reina del Sur
Jamilah Olsen in Black Lightining
Dani in The Haunting of Bly Manor
Tumblr media
I do not want to count how many times I have seen the words “died in her girlfriends arms” in this list, and I’m only a page and a half in. I do not want to count how many times I have read “Cause of Death: shot/stabbed/blown up/murdered/throat slit” I have seen three separate queer women from True Blood on this list, three separate queer women from Boardwalk Empire, four from Orange is the New Black, four from Killing Eve. The cause of death for a character named Emily in Teen Wolf is five lines long. We know how Supernatural is about killing women and killing queers, and killing queer women (there are three on this list I’ve seen so far). And there are some truly convoluted deaths in here, and unsurprising a number of the most fucked up ones are…you guessed it, committed against queer women of color.
And there are plenty on this list from like…American Horror Story, or like Scream, or you know other shows with very obvious ‘this is kind of an everyone dies’ situation. Like I’m not surprised if multiple queer characters from The Walking Dead die, I’m not going to hold it against the television show Spartacus for killing a bisexual woman in the final battle where everybody dies. (I will blame them for systematically killing off any and all interesting, complex female characters until we were left with almost nothing, when we had such good ones in Season 1). I do not see Dani dying at the end of Haunting of Bly Manor to be a ‘Bury Your Gays” situation in the least.
Tumblr media
And I am a lot more prone to being comfortable with a queer character dying if there are other queer characters in the story, as long as they don’t all die, you know what I mean?
Hell, even in shows written and/or performed by queer people where at the end everyone lives, they’ll still sometimes kill (and then resurrect) the characters. Laura in Carmilla  for instance.
According to a study by LGBT Fans Deserve Better, 62 lesbian and bisexual female characters had died over the past two seasons of television (at the time, which I think was like 2014-2016) and the 2015-2016 year saw the highest number of deaths of queer women in one season of television (42 characters accounting fro 10% of all deaths for scripted television shows that season)
In 2016, a GLAAD analysis was published stating “25 lesbian and bisexual female-identifying characters have died on scripted broadcast and cable television and streaming series since the beginning of 2016” and went on to say that most of those deaths were used to further the plot of the often cishet main character, and violent death was the most repeated ending for queer women in media.
Tumblr media
Looking further back in time, the Hays Code of 1930, which had major influence over United States television, did not allow for positive portrayals of queerness. And those impacts linger for far longer than those rules were put in place. I’m thinking of the very obviously queer coded lobster person in PowerPuff girls (which was one of my childhood shows) named HIM who was the personification of evil. Ursula in The Little Mermaid being inspired by a drag queen. [And it is here I will put an aside to say, I love queer coded villains, I think the person that made most of DIsney’s villains in like my generation of Disney films was queer himself, yada yada I’m covering my ass from anyone who wants to engage with this post in bad faith blah blah].
Tumblr media
Hell, I’ve seen one GL out of Thailand, which was GAP the Series and even they killed off another queer female character and made Sam suffer abuse at the hands of her grandmother. I’ve heard about how The Shipper treated its lesbians.
The TL;DR version of this is that, for a very long time in (at least Western) television, a sapphic existed in a narrative, and a sapphic died, often violently, often in their lover’s arms. And thanks to studies like the one by LGBT Fans Deserve Better, these disparities were made glaringly obvious, and rates of lesbian death in shows has been going down since 2016.

La Reina del Sur 3: Review
It was so good to see again Teresa Mendoza new adventure, even better to discover all those beautiful countries in South America.
Unfortunately, the final left us unsatisfied. They could add another episode to put everything in place, such as: - Teresa discovering a truck full of money, - Batman starting a new life with his family, - Faustino having an uncertain future after avenging the death of his wife, - Did Teresa and Sofía meet again? - Did Sofía and Fedor get together.  - Did Teresa follow Oleg? Are they together finally? - What happened to Paloma? Did she got with Teresa and Sofía?
To this point, I still don’t understand why they killed Rocío?
Also, what happened with the plane’s explosion from the trailer? And we clearly saw Teresa and Batman in a limousine.
Finally, why Oleg and Teresa didn’t at least kiss in the last episodes?? WHY?

On vacation, watching the beautiful Kate Del Castillo in La Reina and enjoying some Tequila Reposado. I'm very happy right now.😊
I drink a shot every time Teresa and Oleg have a moment where they almost admit their feelings for each other then don't. I'm addicted to their chemistry. (OMG episode 1 where he freaks out when he thinks she's dead, let's just say, it was the most intense ambulance scene I've ever seen in MY LIFE, seriously. Holding, hugging, crying, screaming, he did everything...and she friendzones him every time.)
If you like drama, action, a strong leading actress, (and a VERY hot woman with a gun) La Reina Del Sur is a fun show.
If anyone else watches this show, let me know. I didn't see much fandom for it.

I'm screaming I just rewatched episode 2 of season 3 and Pablo's first words to Teresa are basically "unlike these guys, I am not your fan." QUITE a road to travel to "please take care of my father after I die protecting you oh and also the key to my bank account is your birthday".

Rocío y Faustino (La Reina del Sur 2x58 & 2x59)
- “Tu entends comme mon coeur s’emballe de te voir ? Je te l’ai déjà dit, je te le répète. Tu n’as pas à subir... (Faustino) - Tu me répètes toujours la même chose.
(Faustino - Episode 59)

I definitely did not just finish season 3, all 60 episodes of La Reina Del Sur in 5 days......
Not proud...but it was hella worth it.
That said...there will most DEFINITELY be a La Reina Del Sur 4. With an ending like that...there has to be. I think the song at the end "La Nave Del Olvido", is proof that the story is not over. Teresa and Sofia have to reunite (For like...the 5th time lol), and Oleg needs to know Teresa is alive. He needs her in his arms again (especially after he--accidently--killed her 😬😵). (I might’ve written a short fanfic for them)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her gunshot wound might terrify him though (He freaks out everytime she gets injured, it's kinda cute).
About that revival scene...it KILLLLED ME.
Tumblr media
Damn, it was the most intense revival scene I've ever seen on tv. I went through a ROLLERCOASTER of emotions in 7 minutes (before the title credits even started y'all lol). The "Oh Shit" look on Oleg's face when he reaches the ambulance and sees her flatlining...I felt that.
And MASSIVE KUDOS to Kate for really acting this scene so well. She looked hella dead y'all.
Kate Del Castillo has found the role she was born to play, and it's so beautiful 😭 I remember watching her on screen many years ago but NEVER thought I'd see her do a show like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope (I know) she'll give us at least one more season. I LOVE her Teresa Mendoza. She's gritty, sexy, hot, compassionate, funny, dangerous, scary, crazy, loving, masculine, feminine, and even more. Kate portrays each so perfectly. There were times I forgot that her character was actually a drug lord. She's so complex...and it's awesome.
My two-cent predictions for Season 4:
-Teresa Mendoza rises to riches but also gets further sucked into her dangerous life. This causes tension between her and everyone around her, everyone she loves. More people will die.
-Oleg and Teresa's relationship will grow but also break because he wants her safe but she can't leave the life behind.
-Sofia will get hurt and Teresa will lose it.
Anyway, thanks for putting up with these long posts. I love this show, and really hope more people start to watch it.
La Reina will return...
