so til that Planet of the Apes was originally a french novel from the early 60s called La Planète Des Singes, and when the book came out in English, it was published in the US as Planet of the Apes, and in the UK as - as Monkey Planet

and I'm immediately picturing a British version of the film called Monkey Planet, probably starring Jacob Rees-Mogg, and we hear him caught in that net declaring "I say, unhand me you frightful grubby monkey" - and then the end of the film is him and some girl riding a tandem along a seafront esplanade, until they come upon a half-buried Nelson's Column and he loses his composure slightly and murmurs "oh poor show, poor show"

"On est toujours des singes essayant d'exprimer nos pensées avec des grognements, alors que l'essentiel de ce que l'on aimerait communiquer reste coincé dans notre cerveau."

J'ai terminé "Là où les arbres rencontrent les étoiles", de Glendy Vanderah.

On dirait un livre feel good en lisant le résumé: C'est l'histoire d'une doctorante en ornithologie, Jo, qui rencontre un jour une jeune demoiselle, Ursa, lui annonçant qu'elle est une extraterrestre, qu'elle a emprunté le corps d'une enfant qui venait de décéder et qu'elle cherche 5 miracles, après quoi elle retournera sur sa planète. Jo, plutôt habituée à être une ermite dans la forêt, dans ses recherches et dans sa méfiance va voir son quotidien s'enchanter petit à petit. Les personnages : Jo, Ursa et Gabe (le voisin) sont aussi attachants qu'ils sont cabossés.

Joli pitch, lecture chill du dimanche aprèm ? Sur Babelio, les critiques les moins sympas parlent d'un style trop simple, d'une fin attendue et un peu trop naïve mais c'est précisément ce qu'on attend d'un livre feel good, non ?

Ce sera un peu plus profond que ça, puisque l'histoire abordera sans filtre des sujets plus graves comme notamment le cancer, la dépression, le pardon, l'amour et la résilience.

J'ai passé un moment agréable, la plus grande partie de l'histoire se déroule dans la forêt, j'ai trouvé les descriptions immersives et je ressentais comme un apaisement quand les personnages revenaient de la ville, prenaient des routes de plus en plus isolées pour ensuite se retrouver parmi les arbres. Je me suis moi aussi attachée à Ursa, sans savoir avant la fin de l'histoire si elle venait effectivement d'une autre planète ou si elle s'était inventé une histoire pour remplacer son passé douloureux.

Bon, il y a une histoire d'amour entre Jo et le voisin, ça n'apporte pas grand chose à l'histoire mais ça complexifie les personnages.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (encore 5 étoiles, ça va devenir une habitude de lire des pépites !)

Planet of the Apes is a 2001 film directed by Tim Burton.

It is a remake of the 1968 film of the same name, based on the novel Planet of the Apes (La Planète des singes) di Pierre Boulle.

In the year 2029, the daring astrounat Leo Davidson works in the Oberon space base in close contact with primates trained to carry out space missions; His favorite is Pericles, a chimpanzee. Once inside, Leo loses all contact with the Oberon and ends up crash-landing in the swamp of the alien planet of Ashlar, in the year 5021.

Leo will soon discover that this planet is populated by talking, evolved anthropomorphic apes who treat humans like slaves. The astrounat, captured by the apes, is later bought by a human trader named Limbo, a greedy and inept orangutan.

Due to a series of circumstances Leo manges to escape from prison and frees other humans and slaves, including the gorilla ex-soldier Krull, whose military career was destroyed by the evil general Thade, a chimpanzee, who manages the hunt to humans since the death of his father Zaius and is assisted by the ferocious gorilla Colonel Attar. The destination of the escape is "Calima", a sacred place for the monkeys, the temple of their god Seamus: according to their religion, in that place the god gave rise to the life of the monkeys.

In the finale, Leo reaches Earth in what he believes is his time, crashing near Washington. Walking inside the Lincoln Memorial, Leo is horrified to discover that the giant statue of the president possesses the face of General Thade.

The film came to light after a very intense development hell: ideas for a remake of Planet of the Apes date back to the 1980s, when Adam Rifkin was brought to 20th Century Fox studios with the desire to make a new film about apes. His film was to be called Return to the Planet of the Apes and described apes in Greco-Roman customs and habits fighting against a society of intelligent humans, the lineage of the protagonists of the 1968 classic, inspired by films such as Spartacus.

Peter Jackson later wanted to adapt a similar project in which the ape society was modeled after Renaissance culture and Roddy McDowall, the actor who had played Cornelius and Caesar in the original films, was open to the idea of having a part in the role of a monkey with an appearance inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. Jackson, however, dedicated himself to the creation of heavenly Creatures and only decided to resume the project in 1998, only to abandon it again when McDowall's death took away his enthusiasm.

Les pensées s'uniformisent grâce aux réseaux sociaux, et bientôt, comme un terrible accélérateur, grâce au puçage des cerveaux humains auxquels Elon Musk travail actuellement - le gouvernement américain vient de lui en donner l'autorisation. Les épidémies ne manqueront pas d'arriver avec la fonte du permafrost, la généralisation des perturbateurs endocriniens, l'hypermédicalisation et la résistance aux antibiotiques et, quand elles seront mortelles à coup sûr, les derniers hommes retrouveront les instincts de leurs temps primitifs : le cannibalisme cohabitera avec l'embarquement dans les vaisseaux interplanétaires ... L'inculture transformera l'homme surnuméraire en sauvage. Les émeutes de Juin 2023 ont montré des bandes débarrassés de surmoi sont capables. Cris de bêtes et dances sauvages autour des butins, des voitures incendiées, des magasins pillés.

Nous allons vers un état total, un état unique planétaire. Cet état induira une civilisation totale. Le Divers aura disparu. Si l'on veut une idée de ce à quoi tout cela ressemblera, il faut lire 1984 d'Orwell ou Le Meilleur des Mondes D'Huxley, deux livres dits de science fiction qui relèvent bien plutôt de la science politique - du jour et de l'avenir. Notre planète redevenue la planète des singes, les élus seront choisis par les GAFAM pour quitter cette jungle et vivre une vie où le virtuel prendra la place majeur. L'odeur de haie d'aubépines ne sera plus qu'une sollicitation neuronale dans une vie dématérialisée.

L'air de l'extra-terrestre

Finally heard the full "air de l'extra-terrestre!!"

It was only ever included in its original form on the 78 studio vinyl (not the CD) and in two of the early Quebec recordings, and is not included on any of the most well-known recordings I've found or in any of the well-known stage productions -- even the 79 show had already turned it into the "Final" which is sung by Balavoine as his soul ascends or whatever, and the ensemble reprises "Petite musique terrienne," and the alien guy doesn't get to berate them about being stupid idiots lol (Apparently the 1980 Québec had a child sing it? Which might be the only time it was actually done live!)

BUT when you listen to it a LOT of things start to make (more obvious) sense, and I'm so happy that there's a nod to it in the new show!

First of all, musically, you need the reprise from the "Petite musique terrienne" air to close the show so it echos the beginning of the Ouverture. If you don't have that air in the show at all, the Ouverture is basically orphaned.

Then, lyrically, the air EXPLICITELY spells out that the whole show is meant as an indictment of the fame-seeking behaviour that all of its characters exhibit (which is obviously implied, but the point is never really hammered home in a song) :

Qu´est-ce que c´est que cette Starmania? Vous vous prenez pour qui, pour quoi? Moi qui suis d´une autre planète Je vous surveille dans ma lunette Et je vous trouve bien minuscules Bien ridicules!

What the hell is this 'Starmania' / Who or what do you think you are / Being from another planet / I'm watching you through my lens / And I find you so very small / So very ridiculous!

It also gives a moral to the story and makes it clear there are no good guys here:

Un rayon de soleil suffit Et vous êtes tous anéantis Vous n´avez encore rien compris Avec vos bombes et vos fusils Vous êtes tout petits, petits

A ray of sunlight / And you are all destroyed / You still don't get it / With you bombs and your guns / You are so, so small

(Just in case you thought Berger and Plamondon advocated violence from any side)

But it also acts as a sort of reality check to the human tragedy & darkness of the story by putting things into a wider existential context:

Habitants de la planète Terre Vous n´êtes pas seuls dans le monde A cent millions d´années-lumière Nous avons su capter vos ondes [...]

Non, ce n´est pas la fin du monde Le temps qui passe est infini Le temps d´une vie N´est pas une onde Dans l´espace

Sur des millards d´années-lumière Que sont vos heures et vos secondes? Comment voulez-vous que la Terre Soit le centre du monde?

Earthlings / You are not alone in the world / A hundred million light-years away / We were able to receive your signal [...]

No, it's not the end of the world / Passing time is infinite / The span of one life / Is not a wave / In space

Compared to billions of light-years / What are your hours and your seconds? / How could you think that Earth / Is the center of the world?

And I think the "Final" with Balavoine in the 79 show does try to fulfill the same role with its own lyrics:

Maintenant, pour moi tout s'éclaire Je n'ai fait que passer sur Terre Le temps d'une vie Mais le temps est infini

Now for me things are clear / I was just passing on Earth / For the span of one lifetime / But time is infinite

But it loses the moralizing outsider POV (maybe not a bad thing!)

Plus, let's face it, the second half of the air itself isn't the most memorable or the most momentous -- I think it is nicer musically to close the show with the "Petite musique terrienne" than with the weirdly poppy "Qu'est ce que c'est que cette Starmania" chorus.

The 2022 show references this air in two places: just before "Le monde est Stone" you hear the Roger Roger voice (Thomas Jolly) say the first couple lines: "Quelle heure est-il en ce moment, est-ce la fin du monde ou le commencement ?" [What time is it right now, is it the end of the world or the beginning?] and then after the curtain falls, the main cast come back and reprises "Petite musique terrienne" together, which is a lovely and moving way to end the show IMO.

ANYWAY those are my wayyy over-thought thoughts! (I have to put them somewhere!! Do you have thoughts?? Put them here!!)
