From a 1987 profile of Donna Ludwig, Ritchie Valens' girlfriend and the subject of the song, "Donna," when La Bamba was released:
"For almost 30 years now people have been asking her if Valens was the love of her life. "I was 15 years old, for heaven's sakes," she exclaims. "Who knows? I liked Ritchie a lot, I really cared, but I can't say I loved him. I was a kid. I loved my mother and sister and brother."
It's no accident that Fox-Coots doesn't list her father among her dear ones. She has never forgiven him for his "bigoted" rejection of Valens or for the recording deal he pressured her into after the singer's death. Hoping to capitalize on the brief romance, her father arranged for her to sing two songs, "Lost Without You" and "Now That You're Gone," on the Pop label.
Fox-Coots consented to sing the songs, she says, but only after a contract was drawn up ensuring that her share of the royalties would go to Valens' mother. The record, which never became popular, remains an acute embarrassment to Fox-Coots. "I don't want to talk about it," she says. "It was horrible. It just upsets me too much." She moved out of her father's house on her 18th birthday and never visited him again....She's only consented to a few interviews, she says, and then only because she wanted to promote "La Bamba" for the Valenzuela family, which is receiving a percentage of the film's profits. She feels strongly that Valens' recording company took financial advantage of the family after his death."

50′s/60′s Movie Recs
By request, here’s a list of some 50s/60s movies and shows I watched to help me write Milk & Honey.
Most of these movies are BASED on the 50’s, as opposed to MADE in them, especially if you’re looking for the more black side of the times, there weren’t many movies that showcased it MADE in the 50′s, so hope that’s cool
Anyways, If you like the story, I suggest watching these movies, and if you do let me know what you thought of them!

CADILLAC RECORDS (2008)
The history of Chess Records and it’s place in the Blues/Rock & Roll community. Touches on the racial struggles within the music industry as well as singer Etta James struggles with being mixed.
Watched this 20x this month alone. I base A LOT of Honey’s background off this movie
Elvis: The Early Years Vol. 1 & 2 (2005)
Y’all. This movie and the new Elvis movie are SO similar. A lot of the scenes are shot exactly the same, Baz was definitely inspired, but this one goes a bit deeper into his life.
Sun Records (2017)
The beginnings of singers Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Good for learning about teenage Elvis

Y’all, these two are an interracial couple. I was SHOCKED when I found out this was allowed on TV back then, let alone got as popular as it is. Anyway, it’s really cute and funny 10/10

Why Do Fools Fall in Love (1998)
Life of singer Frankie Lymon.
This movie doesn’t touch INCREDIBLY so on the 50′s but it mentions the racial struggles within the music industry during the time. Little Richard’s in it too and he’s great so
Loving (2016)
The story of how interracial marriage came to be legal
Pillow Talk (1959)
Don’t have much to say about this movie, It’s just cute. Helped with getting down some 50′s lingo
Mermaids (1990)
This movie is so weird, but I like it and it’s based on the 60′s so
Blue Hawaii (1962)
I literally based Pearl off Ellie (the blonde on the far right)

The life of singer Ritchie Valens. Another movie that touches on racial issues in the music industry. If you haven’t seen this, I’m just warning it’s so f-ing sad omg
Sparkle (1976)
3 young singers from Harlem become a successful girl group in the 50′s. Honestly, it’s not my favorite movie but Giving Him Something He Can Feel is a banger so I had to add it
