Mentor? I Hardly Know Her!
Tumblr media
wc: 2.6k pronouns: none used; reader belongs to a mixed gender idol group warnings: a couple swears; fluffy fluff; the last sentence is very flirtatious but its just meant to be a joke and obviously so is the title summary: kum junhyeon is totally smitten with planetmaster/idol!reader in this semi-accurate fictional retelling of boys planet episodes 6 and 7 ~bp masterlist~ ♡ ~kofi (no pressure at all)~ i literally adore little kum junhyeon
Standing in the hallway in front of an intimidatingly large set of doors, you wring your hands nervously as you wait for further instructions.
This week, you had been asked to participate as something called a "Planet Master" on a new Mnet talent survival show called Boys Planet. Having been an idol for over five years now, you had been asked to make dozens of appearances at award shows, promotional events, concert tours, and fansigns with your group...
But this was your first time being asked to head a solo appearance. Being the leader of your group, as well as the main vocalist and the choreographer, you were used to playing a role similar to that of mentor. At the very least, you had experience providing your members with help, guidance, and oftentimes comfort throughout the past five years.
Waiting inside the set of giant doors was a room full of 51 ambitious boys that wished to shed the label "trainee" and finally debut as an idol.
You remember it like it was yesterday: your life as a hopeful and terribly sleep deprived trainee. It was admittedly unpleasant a good portion of the time, but it ultimately led you to be able to achieve your life's dream.
"We're ready for you in three..." A producer says now, forcing you out of your thought spiral. As he counts two, one, and cue on his fingers, the giant doors begin to open for you to walk through and onto the set.
Planting each lug-sole boot-adorned foot carefully on the ground as you walk forward, you make your best effort to appear as cool as possible as you make your entrance.
You figure eating shit in front of fifty boys on international television is not the best move for your career or your self esteem.
The lights brighten and then dim slightly on the stage to signify your entrance as you finally set your eyes on the group of trainees standing in lines on a set of risers. You watch as the first one spots you, eyes nearly popping out of his head as he points and stares at you in awe.
"Really... REALLY!?" The petite boy shouts, prompting the rest of them to look at you and begin reacting similarly. You stand there a bit awkwardly, mic in one hand and script card in the other. Unable to contain your laughter at the trainees' over-the-top reactions, you bring the script card up to cover your smile.
You clear your throat lightly into the microphone to get the rowdy boys' attention. After a few seconds, the noise finally dies down as the trainees look up at you expectantly with the widest of eyes.
"Hi Boys Planet trainees! I'm leader and main vocalist (Y/N) from Virtual Reality."
"WE KNOW!" One of the boys shouts.
You giggle and continue with your lines. "Today I'm here as a Planet Master to announce your Second Mission and to let you know I'll be helping to evaluate your progress this week. The Second Mission is: Dual Position Battle."
~
You finish your appearance with care and diligence and are asked to stick around to greet each trainee that wishes to meet you. Apparently, every single one of them wishes to meet you and their undying enthusiasm makes it easy for you to happily oblige.
You've seen a few familiar faces so far and wished many boys luck on their journeys, conveying sincerely that you look forward to working with them later this week.
"Congratulations on the win," you say to your old friend Kim Jiwoong. "I look forward to your debut. What is it they say? Third time's the charm?"
He rolls his eyes and laughs, pulling you in for a hug. "I'll make it come true."
As he pulls back, he points behind him to another member of his team this week.
"This is Kum Junhyeon," Jiwoong says, pushing the boy forward. You recognize him now, the silly, but very talented trainee that was always shouting in the first few episodes. A bit of concern seeps onto your face as this usually outgoing boy stares back at you in what appears to be immense fear.
"I'm so scared of you," Kum Junhyeon confirms quite earnestly, causing you to laugh.
"Oh? What's so scary about me, huh?" You tease.
He sighs. "It can be terrifying for a man to unexpectedly come face to face with perfection in his lifetime."
You'd be lying if you said you didn't feel your breath hitch in your throat. Now you're the one staring with wide eyes.
"This kid," Kim Jiwoong scolds, patting his back. "But can you really blame him?"
"Sorry," Junhyeon apologizes, but there's a look in his eye-- a look that is much more like what you're used to seeing on Junhyeon-- that suggests he doesn't really regret his words.
You smile slowly. "Sure you are."
The brightest grin spreads across his face now, clutching his heart a bit in a humorously dramatic display. You laugh as Jiwoong starts to drag him away.
"Why'd you do that, huh? Now we'll never get him to shut up," the older boy whines as he shoots you a death glare. You just wave as you watch Jiwoong and another trainee push a babbling Junhyeon out the door.
~
You've seen eight teams already from the Vocal & Dance and the Vocal & Rap categories. You stuff a granola bar into your mouth as pH-1, Lee Seok-hoon and Choi Young-joon finish filling out notes for the last team.
In the back of your mind, you can't help but wonder why you haven't seen that kid from the other day yet. Isn't he a singer?
The Rap & Dance teams start to shuffle in through the door now as you stuff the wrapper of your granola bar into your bag. The last person to enter is Kum Junhyeon.
He doesn't look fearful today. He looks kind of sad.
"Ggang team, let's go," Young-joon announces, prompting five boys including Junhyeon to stand up.
They line up in front of your little panel, Seok-hoon asking to hear a run-through of their rap and vocals first. As the team performs, all except Junhyeon sing and rap with enthusiasm. His eyes stay locked on his paper as he seems to do only the bare minimum.
When they finish, the Star Masters in the room nod as they think. As they're checking their notes, you turn to Seok-hoon.
"May I say something?" You ask politely, to which Seok-hoon nods enthusiastically.
"Please do," he allows.
You nod, chewing on both cheeks as you look down at your paper. "Kum Junhyeon."
The silence in the room is deafening before Junhyeon finally responds, "Y-... Yes?"
You look up, meeting his eyes now with a completely unamused expression. It takes everything in you to hold it when Junhyeon suddenly returns to looking like Bambi.
"Was this supposed to impress me?"
Junhyeon's mouth falls open slightly and so does everyone else's in the room as they take in your rhetorical question.
"I've been waiting for your performance all day and that was all you've left me to sit with. Am I supposed to feel this insulted? Was that the intention?" You ask, not letting up.
"No, no! Of course not. I'm sorry, sunbaenim," he apologizes and you're sure he's never looked so sad in his life.
"The only form of apology I'll accept is a good performance," you say, now all of your effort going towards suppressing a smile.
He nods vigorously.
"Well, I don't have any other notes," Seok-hoon confirms, nodding at pH-1 in agreement. "Young-joon, are you ready for the dance?"
But Young-joon is staring at you. "Wow... I will pray for your members daily from now on."
You can hear the boys sitting on the left side of the room chuckle. "I think it's important to make sure the most talented people are performing to their potential," you say with a smile, the whole panel turning back to watch the Ggang team's full performance.
As you expected, Junhyeon performs flawlessly-- an energy radiating out of him that is utterly infectious.
"So..." Young-joon starts. "Will you forgive him?"
"Oh, um..."
Looking up, you see Junhyeon biting his lip so hard in anticipation that you're afraid he'll start bleeding.
"Yes," you answer simply with a smile.
Junhyeon suddenly falls to the floor in a full bow. "Thank you, sunbaenim!!"
Everyone bursts into laughter as he sits up, absolutely beaming at you.
You click your tongue, looking around disbelievingly as you can't help but smile back at him. "Just don't do it again, yeah?"
He nods furiously.
"Good job," you praise softly, sinking back into your seat as the Ggang team's evaluation concludes.
~
"Open wide," Kel-C says, popping a piece of caramel popcorn into your mouth lovingly.
On the screen of your dorm's giant television, this week's episode of Boys Planet is coming to an end. This means, your appearance is soon to be aired any second now.
"I can't believe you went without us," Eunwoo whines with a pout. "Do you not need us anymore?"
You laugh, ruffling up the hair of your maknae. "I'll need you for as long as you need me. And maybe then some."
"Yet you're out here getting caught in dating scandals left and right," Mari accuses, scrolling through her phone disinterestedly as she stirs the metaphorical pot.
"What? Left and right!? That's--," you stutter, caught off guard by her statement. "That's hardly true."
"OH MY GOD!" Eunwoo cries, taking both of your hands in his. "You met someone while you were filming!? Who!?"
"Ssh! Look, it's happening!" Kel-C shouts, directing everyone's attention back to the television as music signals the appearance of someone on the stage.
You cover your eyes as past-you comes onto the screen, the elements of the set becoming so hilariously dramatic for your silly little entrance. Mari bursts into laughter and you groan in response.
You watch through your fingers as the camera pans to capture the reactions of the boys. Most of them are appropriately excited to see you, jumping around and shouting with their friends.
But one reaction in particular has you suddenly ripping the remote from Eunwoo's hand, rewinding the show and crawling towards the television to make sure you're hearing and seeing properly.
"Seriously..." Kum Junhyeon stands uncharacteristically still with Taerae and Jongwoo on either side of him. "How am I ever supposed to perform in front of the love of my life?"
Taerae laughs, comfortingly patting Junhyeon's back. "It'll be okay."
The screen cuts to a confessional of Junhyeon. He's biting his lip, almost shy as he speaks to the camera. "(Y/N)-nim has been my crush since Virtual Reality debuted. There's nobody else like (Y/N)."
A producer off camera says, "You looked like you'd seen a ghost."
Junhyeon laughs lightly and then nods. "Unfortunately I couldn't react with proper excitement, because I was so nervous. I hope I can be forgiven for this."
The producer off screen speaks again. "Maybe aegyo will help?"
Junhyeon grins now, his voice becoming child-like and his hands producing two finger hearts. "I'm sorry, sunbaenim! Saranghae!"
You hit the pause button, hugging your knees to your chest tightly as you failingly try to suppress a squeal. What was wrong with him? How could he be so careless? And how could he be so damn cute?
As your members suddenly yank you back towards them, shrieking their simultaneous approvals and disapprovals, all you can hear is that absolutely crazy boy confessing his love for you on international television.
~
"ARE YOU INSANE!?" You yell, smacking Junhyeon's shoulder in the hallway behind the stage.
The mission two show has already begun and any minute now, you are supposed to make your way backstage to introduce the first team: Junhyeon's team.
"Yes," he answers seriously. "Please hit me again."
Your eyes widen, guffawing at the absolute nerve of the kid in front of you. "Junhyeon! Are you really going to be this reckless? Don't you want to debut? You know that people won't vote for you if you keep acting like this."
He nods. "You watched the episode this week."
Unsure of what to say, you just sigh.
"I meant it," he says simply, eyes staring back at you sincerely.
"It doesn't matter if you meant it. You're... Junhyeon, you're so talented. You really have a shot here. Please don't waste it on saying cute things to me."
He smiles. "You think the things I'm saying are cute?"
You can't help but laugh now. "I can't stop you, can I?"
"No," he confirms. "Unless you really want me to. I don't know if you've noticed, but... you haven't actually told me to stop yet."
An exasperated sigh escapes you as you seriously consider hitting him again. "No. I guess I haven't."
He grins. "Do you have your phone on you?"
"Yeah," you say, pulling it out of your pocket. "Why?"
Before you can even react, Junhyeon gently snatches your phone from your hands. He holds it in front of your face for a second to unlock it.
"Hey, what are you--?" As you begin to protest, he finishes typing something and hands it back to you. You look at the screen to see a new contact by the name of Hyeonni.
"You can delete it if you want. But I had to try, right?" He smiles so sweetly that all you can respond with as he walks toward the stage door is:
"Right."
With the Ggang team all lined up on stage, the boys make their individual introductions.
Reading your line from the teleprompter, you direct your attention towards Junhyeon to speak. "Trainee Kum Junhyeon, I heard that the atmosphere was not good when this team was formed. What happened?"
He nods, bringing the microphone closer to his face. "When we got Ggang, I was perplexed," he begins, using his whole body to speak in that classic Junhyeon way. "I thought of the opportunity as a crisis."
You expertly suppress the urge to facepalm.
~
As the Ggang performance begins, you watch from offstage as the team shows off their talents. Junhyeon's choreography and all of the members' raps are absolutely killing with the audience. But you're ripped out of your spell of admiration when you hear someone suddenly shout:
"SUNBAENIM!" Junhyeon yells, pulling up his shirt to reveal a t-shirt underneath with a set of washboard abs printed on it. A camera is on you immediately, trying its best to caption your reaction and you're absolutely sure it's TV-worthy.
"Do you think this is too reckless!?" Junhyeon sticks the hem of his over shirt in his mouth as he proceeds to "seductively" gyrate his hips.
Both of your hands are covering your gaping mouth, eyes wide as you're unable to look away from the absolute maniac of a man on stage. Junhyeon turns around, humorously sticking his butt out and wiggling it around.
You find yourself unable to contain your laughter now, shaking your head in disbelief at the boy's impossible antics. Yet, in an instant, Junhyeon returns to his professional self, completely annihilating a dance break and singing perfectly the funny new lyrics he wrote.
In the confessional from the episode you'd watched this week, Junhyeon had said there was no one else like you. You wonder now if he knows the same is true about him.
After the performance is finished, you run out the backstage doors into the hallway. You only have a minute or so to pull out your phone before you have to go back inside to introduce the next group of contestants. But its enough time to send your new contact a text:
You're a fucking enigma.
Smiling like an absolute idiot, you send a follow-up:
Dinner's on me if you show me what's really under the shirt.

Boys Planet Episode 9: Master Post and General Episode Recap
Tumblr media
Hey, fellow Star Creator!
It’s time to talk about Episode 9!
This post is actually just going to be a master post for the episode, in which I cover:
The great reshuffling of the teams
The beginning of the show (fans outside, returning trainees, etc)
The field day
The visit with the parents
An overview of what’s going on with the teams
I’m going to cover the five teams’ rehearsals and performances in separate posts, which means that Supercharger and En Garde will be ready soon, while the other three teams will be covered later.
So, let’s go!
If you want to skip the preview and whatnot, the episode actually starts at 2:37.
We start the episode at the end of the previous elimination ceremony, watching the boys hug and cry and say goodbye to each other. We see a few of the boys sobbing disconsolately, including Brian and Lee Yedam. It’s pretty heartbreaking.
Later, the surviving boys go back to their dorms and talk. They seem to be gathering in little bunches for comfort. Kim Tae Rae is sitting with Lee Jung Hyeon -- they’re both WakeOne trainees and came to the show together, along with Lee’s good friend, Mun Jung Hyeon, who was just eliminated. TaeRae is telling his younger friend Lee to keep going and keep trying on Mun’s behalf.
In another room, Kim Guyvin says that he wants to win first place in something so that he can “call the names of the eliminated trainees one more time.” That’s sweet and everything but it sounds like he’s in the Hunger Games. I am kind of worried about Gyuvin -- he was so confident when he arrived and the judges seem to have beaten him down to pulp. He’s always so bummed out and nervous now. I want to see that confident mop-headed kid again. You’re still in there, right Gyuvin-ah?
Tumblr media
That’s my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon in the bed on the left, and the one curled up in the corner is Lee Seunghwan, based on his pajamas, which we saw in the Ggang segment, but I can’t see the others clearly enough to recognize them. The sign over the middle bed says something like “one chicken per person.”
But then… in the next scene, it’s a bright and cheery new day! All the sadness is gone completely!
3:48 The Great Re-shuffling Begins
Tumblr media
So, it’s time for THE GREAT RESHUFFLING. Some teams were left with too many trainees, and some teams were left with too few, and now some teams will have to kick some of their own members out, a process that’s so stressful that people actually feel kind of sorry for the team whose entire contingent of ten survived.
The stakes are pretty high here. There are at this point only three or four days before the actual performance. Changing to a new song at this point could be disastrous for anyone who is slow to learn choreography or lyrics. Also, the song with the most open spaces is Supercharger, which is not only a terrible song,* but also features choreography so difficult that even Haruto had trouble with it after many days of working on it. Anyone who gets kicked out of their team has approximately a and you have a decent chance of being stuck with Supercharger.
*So, I ran a poll on the topic of the song Supercharger, asking people if they liked it or not. A lot of people said they genuinely liked it, so… I guess I stand corrected. For me, just the fact that it got stuck in my head doesn’t mean that I like it.Being sticky isn’t the same thing as being good. I mean, I’ve had honey get stuck in my hair. That doesn’t mean I want it there. But yeah if you like Supercharger, that’s cool -- you do you, boo. I like Danger by Wooah and Firetruck by NCT and Obsession by Exo and Wing Wing by Kepler and a bunch of other weird songs, so I get it. People should like what they like! I’m still not adding Supercharger to my playlist, but I understand why maybe someone else would.
Anyway, so here’s our team status report:
Team En Garde, wearing light pink, have 7 members remaining and need to lose 1.
Currently on the team: Kim Gyu Vin, General Park Gunwook, my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon, Hui, the formerly blue haired Park Hanbin, that peach Lee Seung Hwan 🍑, and Hiroto.
Members who have gone home: Lee Yedam, Oh Sungmin, Ji Yunseo
Team Over Me, wearing white, have 8 members and need to lose 3.
Currently on the team: Chen Kuan Jui, Jay, Keita, Lee Jeong Hyeon, Ricky, Wang Zi Hao, Yoon Jong Woo, Zhang Hao
Members who have gone home:  Lim Jun Seo, Ma Jing Xiang
Team Say My Name, wearing black, have 10 members and need to lose 5
Currently on the team: Cha Woong Ki, Han Yu Jin, Kim Ji Woong, Kim Tae Rae, Ollie, Seo Won, Seok Matthew, Sung Hanbin, Takuto, Yoo Seung Eon
Team Supercharger, wearing purple, is down to just Haruto from the 11 members it used to have. The team needs five more members.
Members who have gone home: Bak Do Ha, Chen Jian Yu, Cong, Jung Min Gyu, Lee Da Eul, Lee Dong Yeol, Mun Jung Hyun, Park Hyunbeen, Park Ji Hoo
Side note: For this scene, MNET uses piano music that is so over the top dramatic sounding that it would be appropriate for a story about a family losing everything they owned in a house fire. Because it’s so over the top, a viewer will probably subconsciously disconnect with the very real and reasonable pain and anxiety Haruto is feeling right now. Nice work, MNET!
Team Switch is just Na Kamden and Z-Bo, kind of sitting there looking uncomfortable. The team needs 4 more members.
Members who have gone home: Anthonny, Brian, Cai Jin Xin, Choi Woo Jin, Dang Hong Hai, Jung I Chan, Krystian, Lee Dong Gun, Wumuti, and Zhang Shuai Bo
The teams aren’t totally sure how they will be reshuffled because it has worked in different ways in different seasons. The leader of team Over Me, the comeback kid Yoon Jong Woo, suggests voting. Woongki on Say My Name is worried that it might just immediately be decided by ranking, which, ha ha, it kind of will be!  And everyone is slightly worried that the surviving members of Supercharger and Switch will get to come steal the people they want.
And in to En Garde’s rehearsal room comes Haruto with big glasses and a clipboard. I love this guy.
Tumblr media
I love how Kamden and Z-Bo can’t quite keep up with Haruto’s complete commitment to his bit. Good stuff. So yeah, Haruto manages to almost convince the teams that he and Kamden and Z-Bo get to steal whoever they want from the other teams and make them join Supercharger or Switch. Of course, they can’t. They can make their sales pitch, however, and they do, trying to poach some of the higher ranked team members with promises of big parts like main vocal or the Killing Part. Haruto will peel off that Killing Part sticker right now and slam it right on your solar plexus if you will just join him in Supercharger, assuming you are Park Gunwook.
So En Garde has to figure out who to eliminate. The team is really strong, and its members survived in a convenient distribution, with one person per part, except for the Killing Part and Main Rapper.
Tumblr media
Looking at the roster, I theorize that the team would have voted out Hiroto (who is not only the lowest ranked on the team but by total unrelated coincidence the only non-Korean member of the team) and then made one of Gunwook or Gyuvin the main rapper, and then given the other one the Killing Part + Sub Rapper 1.
But that’s all theoretical. Looking at the part distribution gives us a hint as to what really happens, because Park Hanbin, who won top spot in Law, who led both his teams to victory, who was given All Star ranking both times, THAT Park Hanbin, is currently subvocal 3 with 10 seconds of center time?
Um, no.
Park Hanbin tells his team that he has decided to just walk away and join team Switch.
Naturally, Kamden and Z-Bo are delighted to have him join their team. I think team En Garde is just glad that they don’t have to vote someone out.
You guys, the story is going to get even better but we’ll get there.
Next, the recruiting teams go to Over Me and pull the same stunt with their clipboards and self-assurance. Kamden makes a passionate play to try to recruit his friend Jay, offering him the main vocal part. It’s like, 10% cringey, but I don’t mind too much.
Tumblr media
So, after Hiroto and co. leave, the Over Me team talks about it. No one wants to leave, so they have to vote to decide who will be kicked out. Each of them makes an argument for why they should stay, and Yoon Jong Woo’s mini speech is about how he’s poured himself into this, deciding on costuming, choreography, etc. Hmm.
Here’s the team as it stood, with their rankings -- those with the Killing Part are marked with a *:
*Zhang Hao             2
*Keita                         8
Jay                         12
Ricky                         14
L - Yoon Jong Woo 15
Wang Zi Hao             19
Chen Kuan Jui 22
Lee Jeong Hyeon 24
They vote for the teammates they want to keep, and Haruto and co. wait in the hallway to see who will be kicked out.
The first to walk out is the smiliest man on earth, 😁Wang Zi Hao😁. Haruto is so happy to him, because if anyone in this whole show can handle Supercharger, it’s 😁WZH😁.
Everyone is shocked to see Keita when he comes out of the rehearsal room, but I really can’t tell if Keita is surprised or not. He’s smiling in a way that is hard to interpret. Last to emerge is Yoon Jong Woo, who is clearly so shocked and angry at the betrayal that for now all he can do is smile.
I have theories on how each of them ended up getting kicked out, because it obviously wasn’t just ranking. Shall we walk together for a while? We shall! Here we go.
My theories on all this:
First off, Zhang Hao wasn’t going to get kicked out -- he’s Zhang Hao. Jay’s voice is super well suited to this song and they need him. Ricky is well suited to the vibe of the song, as well. Chen Kuan Jui is a fantastic dancer who can dance in this style, and also, he’s really good friends with Zhang Hao.
As for why they kept Lee Junghyeon, my theory is that it was in part because he’s their maknae and they care about him, in part because he wrote that rap for the song already and they feel like he has to do it, but mostly because even though he’s good during the performances and won’t ruin anything, he isn’t a threat to steal votes from them.
So in some ways, those who got kicked out are just those who weren’t those five. But I think there were a few other factors in play.
I went back and rewatched the bits of the team interacting from Episode 8, and I noticed that when they circled up for a group convo, Wang Zi Hao ended up sort of on the outside, and they didn’t open the circle for him.
Also, look at them sitting in the producer’s office, also from Episode 8:
Tumblr media
Left to right: Wang Zi Hao, MJX, Lee Junghyeon, Ricky, CKJ, Zhang Hao, Jay, Lim Jun Seo, Keita, Yoon Jong Woo
I don’t know what order they sat down on the couch, but look at how cozy Hao is with Jay and CKJ. Look at Yoon Jong Woo inexplicably taking up too much space on the couch so that Lim JunSeo has no room to move his elbows? Does JongWoo not notice or not care? Why doesn’t JunSeo say something? And look at Wang Zi Hao sitting politely to the side, just completely separate. So much to unpack…
You guys? I think they voted out Wang Zi Hao because they’re not friends with him. It’s just that simple. I’m sure he could dance in this style, and we heard him singing in the previous episode and he can actually sing just fine. They don’t dislike him, I mean who would dislike him? -- but he’s not their friend.
Now, Keita. It’s my belief that they voted out Keita because he’s a fucking THREAT. Plus, I don’t get the feeling he’s really their friend, either.
Consider, in episode 8, when they were voting for the Killing Part. Keita, being honorable, voted for Zhang Hao for the killing part. Who did Hao vote for? Chen Kuan Jui. Come on. We all love CKJ, but in what world is he better at a killing part than Keita? I really believe that Hao is smart and strategic enough that he voted for CKJ not because he thought CKJ should get it, but rather to waste his vote and make it less likely that Keita would get it. And it worked, in that Keita ended up coming in second in the vote.
And, now that they’ve both survived, Zhang Hao must be worried he might lose the Killing Part after all. So. Remember how Zhang Hao and Ricky are friends from the same agency (Yuehua)? They’re likely to team up. We’ve also seen how much Zhang Hao and CKJ get along -- they’re really good friends. It wouldn’t have shocked me if Hao, CKJ, and Ricky got together the night before and agreed to vote for each other to stay, and to make sure that Keita was out. They might even have gotten Jay in on it.
I actually think that Keita didn’t see this coming. He’s really smart, and he must have known it was possible, but I think that maybe he isn’t as good at social engineering as he is good at literally everything else. He strikes me as a direct and honest kind of person, so maybe it never occurred to him that his team would do this to him because he himself would never try to vote out the best teammates. He’s friendly and always appreciates how good everyone else is. Yet you rarely see anyone hugging him, you know? I think everyone likes him, but not a lot of people are close friends with him. So he’s not in the cool kids clique, and when push comes to shove, he gets the shove.
So what happened to Yoon Jong Woo? Well. I have a lot of answers to that.
First and foremost, I think he was a threat too. I think he really really suits the style of this song, and he’s a great dancer, and I think he would have been great at this. He might have even won the vote on D-Day. They weren’t going to risk that. Plus, he keeps climbing up the charts. They don’t want him climbing up into top 9! Tossing him out and having him risk landing in Supercharger is a sure way to sabotage him and keep him out of the Top9 so there is more room for Ricky.
Also, I think -- and this is wild speculation on my part but -- I think they were getting sick of him. I really do. I think that Jongwoo’s aggressive attitude toward MJX made the rehearsal room a little unpleasant to be in, and I think stress has made him a little anxious and sharp. His little speech about how he was contributing so much to the song was designed to make them want to keep him, but maybe it reminded them that he’s doing too much (in their opinion)? Something like that…
So yeah, those are my thoughts on what happened with that team!
Anyway.
Back to the reshuffling!
Next, Haruto and co. go see team Say My Name and again, they make their pitches. Here are the ten Say My Name trainees, along with their episode 8 ranks:
Sung Hanbin               1
Han Yu Jin               3
Seok Matthew               4
Kim Ji Woong               5
Kim Tae Rae               7
Yoo Seung Eon   17
Seo Won               18
Takuto                           25
Cha Woong Ki               26
Ollie                           27
The only one who seems interested in the sales pitch is Matthew, who listens to Switch to see if he likes it, but then also jokes that his name is Seok Woohyun (that’s his Korean name, apparently) and that he doesn’t know who Matthew is. So no Switch-switch there.
However, as we find out, Kim TaeRae does in fact want to switch to Switch, saying: “I think this team [Say My Name] has a lot of members who can do a better job than me. In order to show my strength more, it might make more sense for me to join them.”  His choice is quite interesting and I will get to it in a bit. It’s not clear how he ends up on Switch as opposed to Supercharger, but maybe since presumably all five trainees wanted Switch, the Switch team was allowed to pick the trainee they wanted. Or maybe because TaeRae was was ranked the highest, or because he volunteered to leave, he was allowed to choose.
The other four SMN teammates who get kicked out are coincidentally the four lowest ranked, Takuto, Ollie, Seo Won, and Woongki. I’m sure you’ve noticed that they are the four cutest on the team, so it could also be theorized that they were kicked out for being a threat, but I don’t think that Takuto was a threat.
I actually think that Takuto and Ollie in particular were kicked out because they’re so young looking. I know that Ollie is older than Han Yujin, but even so, and even though he’s so tall, he comes across as younger. Knowing as I do now that the team is going to go for a “high teen” concept, you can’t have actual teenaged looking people on the team or they’ll make Sung Hanbin look old (he’s not, but he looks older than his age [21], in my opinion).
If you watched Girls Planet 999, you might remember this performance of Yes or Yes, with the 25 year old Wen Zhe and the like, 15 year old Kim Sein. This is also a high teen concept, and having little Sein there made Wen Zhe look like a 35 year old, which in kpop is the same as being an actual brontosaurus. It made the whole team feel out of balance, too.
So yeah, it made sense for the Say My Name team to kick the "little kids" out.
As for Seo Won and Woongki, I really think it was mostly that they’re low ranked. I don’t think that the team viewed them as a threat either, because they’re low ranked and don’t stand a chance at winning the vote compared to them. I mean, Woongki couldn’t win the vote against Z-Bo in Feel Special, you know? I love Seo Won and Woongki too, and think that after the show they will probably have tons of offers to be on reality shows and stuff, because they’re lovable AF! But I still don’t think their teammates viewed them as a threat.
In any case, all four of them end up on Supercharger, much to their intense chagrin.
Tumblr media
Ollie is being sort of comical about his distress, but he also kind of means it. It’s cute to see his friendship with Haruto, but it also makes sense. Haruto is completely fluent in English, as we see in this episode, and Ollie seems to speak English possibly as a first language, so it makes sense that these two friendly, English speaking dancers would have gotten close. In any case, this team is going to have a tough time, as we’ll soon see.
Ok, so here is a final list of the trainees and their songs they ended up in. I include the song they originally had if they switched. Incidentally, everyone originally had the song they asked the audience for, except for Lee Seunghwan, who originally wanted Say My Name but ended up in En Garde.

And thus ends… t h e   g r e a t    r e s h u f f l i n g.
Then from 17:10 to 17:40 it’s just a preview of the performances, so you can skip that if you want.
After that, we visit each of the five teams for 4-8 minutes each, to see how their rehearsals are getting started.
Supercharger (average rank: 21.8)
At 17:40, we visit team Supercharger for almost six minutes.
The gist of what’s going on is that they’re super discouraged, since most of them don’t feel like they’re a good fit for the song. They’re also worried about learning new and incredibly difficult choreography, and they’re sad that they got kicked out of the group they’d been in, especially Woongki, who had a ton of ideas for Say My Name.
For a more in-depth review of their rehearsal and performance, click here.
Say My Name (average rank: 6)
At 23:30, we endure the gut-churningly uncomfortable atmosphere at team Say My Name for a solid eight minutes.
The gist of the situation is that Matthew wants to have a big part and makes everyone feel bad when he is given a smaller part, even though (a) it’s not a tiny part and (b) it suits his voice so much better than the original part that it actually is a benefit to him as well. I know some people think this is “evil editing.” But this is stuff he’s actually doing, and if anything the show seems to be on his side, as far as I can tell.
It’s ok if you still like him -- in fact, good for you for showing such grace and kindness to him! We all deserve kindness when possible. And his negative behavior is a consequence of an extremely stressful environment, and doesn’t mean that he’s a “bad person.” I am not saying that Matthew can never be forgiven or that I hate him. But I am saying that he’s being immature, entitled, oblivious, and just an enormous pain in the butt right now.
I’ll talk about this a lot more when I post my in-depth review of their rehearsal(s) and performance. When it’s ready, you’ll be able to click here. (It’ll be posted when Ep 10 is up.)
Switch (average rank: 14.5)
At 31:45, we visit with team Switch for four whole minutes!
The gist of what’s going is that Park Hanbin has already learned the choreography to the song, because he pretty much planned all along to switch to Switch. This shit is amazing. He ends up with the killing part, because that’s how good he is at the choreo already. Kim Tae Rae, who has switched here from Say My Name, ends up with the main vocal, so a win for him as well. He also ends up having a bit of trouble with the choreo in the very first lesson, which is hardly surprising in any way. He’s a main vocal, folks. And…?
I’ll talk about all of this a lot more when I post my in-depth review of their rehearsal(s) and performance. When it’s ready, you’ll be able to click here. (It’ll be posted when Ep 10 is up.) But I’ll tell you right now that I’m super excited for this performance!
En Garde (Ave rank: 14.2, but without Hiroto would be 11.4)
At 35:50, we visit team En Garde, and spend about 7.5 minutes with them, most of which are unnecessary.
The gist of what’s going on is that they need to pick who will get to keep the killing part, and they choose Gunwook over Gyuvin. Then later on they prank Gunwook and tell him that they’re taking the killing part away and he’s actually pretty nice and mature about it, and then they reveal that it was a prank.
Then Hui says something interesting. “I worried if things were going too well.” Why would you worry about that, Hui? Hmmm…
I’ll talk about this a bit more when I post my in-depth review of their rehearsal(s) and performance. When it’s ready, you’ll be able to click here. (It’ll be posted when Ep 10 is up.)
Over Me (Ave rank: 14.8)
At 43:13, we visit with team Over Me for about 4.5 minutes. The gist of their situation is that they’re trying to shake off the guilt of having gotten rid of Yoon Jongwoo, and they do just that by electing Zhang Hao their new leader and re-distributing the parts. Jay is confirmed as main vocal, and Hao get the killing part. Again, we don’t see them rehearse at all.
I’ll talk about all this a bit more when I post my in-depth review of their rehearsal(s) and performance. When it’s ready, you’ll be able to click here. (It’ll be posted when Ep 10 is up.)
Time passes, and now it’s…
Showtime (47:50)
Fans are waiting outside the studio, holding up signs, excited for the show. There’s a sign that just says “Yujin” and one that says “Park Hanbin” in Hangul and then in English “PHANBIN”.
I know most of you can’t read Korean so here’s a few screenshots with translations of whatever I was able to read:
Tumblr media
By the way, I’m doing my last editing pass on this and I just noticed that that light blue rectangle that says “Lee Sunghwan” in the top image should be in the middle of the bottom image, over that light blue sign in the middle. Don’t know what happened there. Sorry. Oh, and the red and black sign says Keita I think.
There are signs for Kim Gyubin, Ollie, Lee Sunghwan, Zhang Hao, Kim Tae Rae, and tons of other trainees. There are Na Kamden signs in English, Keita signs in Japanese, and look, it’s Haruto’s mom with a group of Haruto’s fans! Aww, she looks so much like him! (That’s his dad in the back, with the tinted glasses.)
Tumblr media
As the fans go inside, we spot some of the eliminated trainees, here to see the show and perform in it, too.
Tumblr media
In the top photo, that’s Wumuti waving, then Choi Woojin in the dark jacket, then Lee Hwanhee partly hidden by Jung Mingyu (who is wearing a white shirt). I can’t quite place the guy in the blue and white shirt or the guy in the middle with the reddish hair. 🙁 In the bottom photo, that’s Hwanhee, Brian, Ji YunSeo, Wumuti, and the guy in the blue and white shirt again. If you know who he is, or who the guy with the reddish hair is, let me know! I feel bad that I don’t recognize them.
Mingyu says that they will get to show off the performance they’ve been practicing, which is nice! From what I’ve heard there are lots of long pauses in these performance stages while the show is filming reactions and stuff back stage, so while they’re doing that, management could let these guys perform to entertain the audience. It’s win/win!
So, then the teams start entering. Switch team is super brightly colored. I’ll have to see what it looks like when they’re in motion -- I mean, Exo’s Obsession outfits were a LOT but they worked on stage.
Tumblr media
Then Team En Garde comes out, in military-esque leather outfits that aren’t thrilling me, but I reserve judgment. Supercharger jumps up and down with the audience, who seem happy to see them. And then the Say My Name team come out in a “cool school boys after school” look -- a  style they call “high teen” in Kpop land. It’s designed to be immediately loveable to the majority of the age groups and sexual preferences of the audience. Finally, Over Me comes out, and Chen Kuan Jui sees something in the audience that really gets his attention.
Tumblr media
It’s such a weird moment. Ok, he’s been making hand half-hearts and stuff, right, but then he stops and almost reflectively makes a butterfly hand gesture, while staring in amazement, then his hand goes to cover his mouth while he continues to stare. It happens at 49:20 or so -- I can’t figure out what he saw. I assume a fan was holding up some sort of fan art of the Butterfly performance, or was dressed like a butterfly, or something…? I wish I knew! It obviously really surprised and touched him.
We see that each fan has been given a light wand that they can also use to vote.  I’m not going to say what I think those light wands look like, but they definitely look like sex toys.
The boys are all gathered on stage, and it looks like the performances will start any minute…
Tumblr media
… but nope. Instead, it’s time for…
52:09 A special video of a special surprise fan meeting
The boys are out at a sort of field day event and find out that they have a surprise fan meeting later that day. They have to win prizes they can use to prepare for the fan meeting.
It’s hard to recap this kind of thing because there’s no point to it, so I’ll mix recap with just random stray thoughts!
🌟I thought it was funny when boys joked that they might have to be in a “zoning out competition” and we see a montage of Na Kamden zoning out. Fun fact -- I showed my fella the dance practice of Switch and he was like, “that guy” (Kamden) “needs to show a facial expression of any kind.”
Tumblr media
🌟I loved Woongki going “woooOOOOoooh!”
🌟What happened to Keita? Why does he have a band-aid on his nose?
🌟I’m glad that they’re all performing as a big team instead of competing against each other. Yes, a common enemy!! Co-op board games keep me and my fella from getting too competitive! Co-op games for the win!
The game where they wore party hats over their eyes to restrict their vision and have to try to match childhood photos to their subjects was pretty cute. They end up getting 5, which means they get to give their fans some tissues. I love how at the start of the game, the staff tells them that the other boys can’t help the searchers, and how they do anyway and no one cares.
Tumblr media
I also love how someone says, of elementary school aged Hui, “He looks like he would’ve liked potatoes.” I have no idea what that means or if it’s a Korean saying or what. But I love it and am going to start saying it about people given the slightest opportunity.
🌟Aww, Ricky says of his 11 or 12 year old photo, “I was so ugly.” Every human being is a little bit ugly at that age. And he already had great eyebrows! I bet girls had a crush on him.
🌟Aw, Woongki was the same as a kid! But hold on, I’m still not clear on whether or not that kid in the swimming pool really was Hiroto.
Next game is a quiz game, whether they’re shown random photos and have to recognize them -- other trainees, the judges, etc. They managed to win the mics. I think the show threw the game to make sure they at least got mics.
The third game is to win food for the visitors -- they have to throw each other candies and catch them in their mouths. If they get 20, they win a steak dinner; if they get only 15, they get galbitang, which a beef short rib soup; if they get 10, they get only gimbap, which if you’re not familiar, is a bit like sushi in that it’s seaweed wrapped around rice, but it has a really different flavor -- there isn’t vinegar on the rice, it’s sesame oil instead, and the fillings can vary a lot. It’s tasty and all that, but it’s considered a sort of casual comfort food in Korea -- not exactly fine dining. It’d be a bit like serving your guests PB&J (USA) or beans on toast (UK) or whatever the version of that meal is where you live. Anyway, turns out Jay is really good at catching candies in his mouth, and catches 11, and hey, gimbap is better than nothing.
🌟 I liked them joking that it would have been great for TaeRae to be the one who catches the candies, because his mouth is so big, and TaeRae just being like, yep.
Then all of a sudden they tell us that the boys won hair and makeup and costumes in games we didn’t get to see…? What the everlasting fuck, MNET? Was Haruto just too charming in the bit that you had to cut it?
Tumblr media
So, with the field day over, the boys return to the dorms to get ready for their show and put on regular but nice looking clothes, then get their hair and make up done. Then they go to the venue and hang up balloons and other decorations for their guests. But who will their guests be?
When the guests are revealed, my first thought was, “there’s more men than I thought there’d be.” My second thought was, “wow, they’re all middle aged, or a little older -- where are the screaming teenagers?” and then I was like ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. It’s their families!
🌟 I love Haruto’s mom -- of course his mom would be so outgoing and silly.
🌟 Park Hanbin’s mother is saying, “Our son became this pretty? Our son became so pretty!” First, if you’re not aware by now, the Korean word translated as "pretty" (it sounds like "yeppo") is applied to men and women alike in Korea, so don’t be throw off by the word choice or think it's a veiled insult. Second, hey, Hanbin’s mother, he’s always been pretty!! And he looks just like you so…. I mean…
🌟Seo Won’s parents make bunny ears at him -- he looks almost irritated at them. Maybe it's a family joke he's really sick of.
🌟We get to see 😁Wang Zi Hao’s😁 dance teacher, who is named Trix. In an interesting coincidence, my fella recently sent me a video of this dance crew called Monster Woo fam. Well, Trix is a member of that crew. Since he’s Korean, it's probably much easier for him to come to something like this than it would be for 😁WZH’s😁 parents to come, and I'm glad that 😁WZH😁had someone to support him, but I'm sorry it couldn't be his family. It's also kind of interesting that he had a Korean dancer teacher, but seems to still be not that great at speaking Korean. Maybe he understands a lot more than he can say.
🌟Keita’s dad, who looks exactly like MMA star Choo Sung Hoon, is also there. (My fella came in while I was writing this and was like, “wait, why is Choo Sung Hoon on your Korean singing show?” My fella watched Physical 100 and recognized him from that.)
🌟 Wumuti is also there! Wumuti is everywhere. Wumuti is IN YOUR BRAIN. I love that Wumuti is so glad to see who is on team Switch -- it’s like, he can relax knowing that if Keita is there, it’s going to be ok.
🌟Woongki is crying, and in a kind of a surprise, so is TaeRae. TaeRae’s mother, who totally has his exact cheekbones, is like, “Oh no, our TaeRae is so sensitive.” P-Hanbin is also tearing up.
🌟15 year-old Han Yujin says “my heart just felt strange” when he saw his mom. I can imagine that -- you kind of build up a wall and almost convince yourself you’ve never been anywhere but here, and then you see people from your old life and the wall crumbles down. Side note: his mom is really pretty. She looks like she could be an actress or something.
🌟Na Kamden has an identical twin brother! Wild. Kamden is the younger of the two (by however many minutes) so has to call his twin “hyung.”
Tumblr media
🌟Ok, this is weird -- when the staff is bringing out the gimbap, we see that Haruto’s manager and Dongmyeong from k-band Onewe (check out their song “Gravity”) are there. That’s random. But Dongmyeong’s been on ALL the reality shows so maybe he’s just there because he gets it? But I really don't understand -- Haruto is under WakeOne and Onewe is under RBW, and I double checked but neither of those companies owns the other so really, this is super perplexing.
They’re all nervous to perform in front of their parents and other family members. Keita says it’s the first time he’s ever performed for his parents, which seems wild to me -- they’ve never seen Ciipher perform?
🌟We find out that Kamden’s brother came all the way from the US to be here. And I love the way the two of them greet each other -- like vague acquaintances. I have cousins who are twins, and they’re like that with each other. They ask the brother if he’s ever seen Kamden’s “aegyo” (over the top cute behavior) and the brother is like please no.
🌟TaeRae is crying so much he almost can’t sing.
🌟Oh, that’s Cai Jin Xin in the audience! Maybe some of the Chinese trainees had a hard time booking the flight home or had a flight home scheduled for some weeks from now, so they’re stuck in Korea for the time being -- something like that? Anyway, CJX was on the original team Switch and can’t help but dance along. It's cute. Both CJX and Wumuti look great styled in their natural personal style (I assume). I'm low-key obsessed with CJX's bizarre hoodie cape thing.
Tumblr media
🌟Oh, Keita’s mom is also so pretty. Keita says he had a hard time preparing for this mission, and I think he’s just so exhausted on every level, giving it his all this whole time. I'm voting for you, sweetie.
When it’s time for “Over Me,” I couldn’t help but think about how embarrassing it must have been for the trainees to perform that song in front of their parents! Here are some sample lyrics, from the video on a youtube channel called ms start+ . The parts that were in English originally are in green -- the rest is translated (kind of poorly, I think) from the Korean.
I swear that I won’t leave without you / this breathless emotion is through/ come closer and hold me tight, tonight with you / I want to stay with you … Burning more and more we’re on fire, you and I are going to the end of the night. / We don’t need to hide our desire/ to wake up with you over me
Doesn’t matter whether you speak Korean and no English, or English and no Korean, you’re going to understand this song. Seriously, I would be so uncomfortable performing this in front of my parents. I noticed that they didn’t use the red fabric ties -- did they just not have them, or did they scrap them at the last second to make the dance less overtly sexy?
🌟We see that Zhang Hao and Ricky’s agency manager is here, watching proudly. She’s wearing a gray hoodie over a white turtleneck with a black coat over the hoodie, so I hope she’s warm enough. We also see that some of Yoon Jongwoo’s chingus are there, finding the whole thing pretty cringey. Love that.
Then they do this awful thing where they make Han Yujin tell his mom he loves her, and he cries, and I hate all of this, but his mom is also really pretty! So is Gyubin’s mom -- we see her at 1:14:53. Aw, all the moms are pretty. Yay! But no one is eating the gimbap -- ha ha. First time I watched this I may have been a bit... lofty... and I was like, damn, if you guys don't want that gimbap, give it to me...
So the families all love the performances, and then the boys are told that this is actually an evaluation performance and that their families will be filling out evaluation sheets. The boys go back to their rehearsal rooms to read their evaluation forms. The show seems to vastly overestimate how much suspense they can eek out of this as the trainees react to the eval forms. It’s so obvious why they’re reacting the way they are, I mean, duh, MNET. Shock of all shocks, the families really just wrote notes of support and love instead of criticizing them harshly! WUTTT?????? It’s still really cute and made me tear up a little because as you know, I’m a light touch.
🌟We never see Takuto reacting to any of this -- I think maybe his parents weren’t there? If they had been, I think that the show have focused on that. Poor Takuto, not being able to see his parents! He's like, a high school sophomore. He's not even old enough to take the SATs.
Side note: we get to see a bit of the note that Keita’s dad wrote for him, and it’s almost all in hiragana. That’s a Japanese syllabary, kind of like their alphabet, as opposed to the kanji characters, which are the more complex characters that have been adapted from Chinese. It’s considered a sign of good education to use kanji where applicable, and just supplement with hiragana as needed to conjugate verbs and stuff. So Keita’s dad is either maybe not super well educated, or is just writing very casually to his son and chose a more simple method of writing. I remember in a few animes, characters being made fun of for writing in just hiragana -- like Sailor Moon, noted ditz, only uses hiragana -- but I don’t want to base my cultural understanding just on anime, so if anyone knows the sort of ins-and-outs of writing quick notes in Japanese, and whether people are likely or unlikely to use kanji in a casual note, let me know! The reason I’m interested in not at all to insult Keita’s father -- it’s more that knowing that Keita comes from a more working-class background makes what he’s doing all the more special. So many idols come from super upper class backgrounds -- Jay from Enhypen, Tzuyu from Twice, Wendy from Red Velvet, Umji from G-friend, those are just a few that pop into my head. Keita being able to develop his talents without the financial backing of rich parents -- that’s just extra cool. We stan a self-sufficient talent.
Anyway, that was a cute interlude, but I’m glad I was able to skip it when I watched the episode the first time to get to the next segment! I don’t mind filler per se, but when you’re dying to see what happened to team Supercharger, you just want to go to…
1:21:28 Supercharger
The team introduces itself as “96.” Subtle. 😛We see their rehearsals -- a study in misery, desperation, and hard work -- and then their performance, which is… surprisingly good?  We all knew Haruto would nail it, but this is the first time I feel like I saw Wang Zi Hao look like an idol, rather than just a really good backup dancer, and everyone (but poor Takuto) really pulled it off.  I’d say Woongki surprised me, but he didn’t really -- if you watch some of his performances with T01, you’ll see he can totally rock this kind of thing. Hiroto comes in first with 852 votes, which is well deserved.
For my more in depth discussion of their rehearsals/performance, click here.
1:41:57 En Garde
The team introduces itself as "En! Butter." It’s apparently kind of a reference to redbean butter bread, and makes sense with the name of the song. This team really had nothing to worry about, so they kind of invented problems to overcome (at least, that’s my take on what happened) and then put on a perfectly good performance that oddly doesn’t sway me much, despite the fact that I like all these performers a lot. I think it’s just that the song is kind of boring to me, personally. I know other people like it and that’s totally cool. We all like different things. Gyuvin comes in first with 742 votes -- I suspect this is controversial because apparently a lot of people don’t like Gyuvin, but I like Gyuvin just fine and don’t mind.
For my more in depth discussion of their rehearsals/performance, click here for my En Garde recap!
1:58:43 Say My Name (not really)
We see the team backstage, then immediately flashback to their rehearsal time. It’s all really uncomfortable. I know people probably are curious about what I have to say about Matthew, but I don’t want to go into too much detail here and now. My short answer is, again, I don’t see this as evil editing. I see this as immature unpleasant behavior from Matthew. It’s not unforgivable or beyond understanding, and there are times that certainly we can see that he’s trying his best, but overall, I don’t love what I see here. I mean, his team is still super uncomfortable even as they go up onstage!
I’ll talk more about it in a separate post, linked in the episode 10 recap!
Side note: Ok, hey, LipJ, like, I thought it was kind of funny how you found the boys attractive, but back off from Han Yujin, ok? He’s a child. You’re twice his age. It’s really not ok. Alright! That’s enough of that.
Interim ranking posting:
And then the show posts a few of the current ranks, just enough to achieve some nefarious purpose. This is what they show:
?
?
?
?
?
Keita
Ricky
?
?
?
?
?
?
Park Hanbin
Lee Jeongyheon
Kim Gyuvin
Yoo Seung Eon
Cha Woonki
Enhh. You guys, the purpose behind this seems so obvious I almost feel like I don’t need to say this, but I’ll just say it anyway, in case you’re thinking the same thing as me and wondering if you’re imagining things. You’re not imagining things. MNET revealed that Keita and Ricky are ranked so high in order to hurt them, and revealed that those five Korean trainees were ranked comparatively low in order to help them. The idea is that people won’t want to vote for the trainees that are ranked high, because they don’t think they need help, and will want to vote for the trainees that are ranked low, because they think they DO need help. And no, it’s not a coincidence that the higher ranked trainees are foreign and the lower ranked trainees are Korean.
So, that's my ep 9 general recap. Here's a link to my general recap of episode 10! As always, thanks for reading and stay tuned! You're the best.

I Am The Boyfriend, Sir
Tumblr media
wc: 1.5k pronouns: she/her (he/him and they/them versions are below original!) warnings: junhyeon being unhinged, ~flirtatious ending~, allusion to strict parents, fluff summary: kum junhyeon is SO excited to finally meet your parents... what could possibly go wrong? ~bp masterlist~ ♡ ~kofi (no pressure at all)~ THE HOURS. ARE DWINDLING. THE END. IS NYE. THE APOCALYPSE NEAR. BEP1ER IS APPROACHING RAPIDLY. i don't want to stop writing about any of these guys. i don't want to stop seeing any of themmm. i love them so much. catch me in therapy tomorrow only talking about boys planet istg.
"I think they're gonna love me," Junhyeon predicts as he hops out of the car. You grab your bag from the floor and start to open the passenger door, but your boyfriend beats you to it. He holds his hand out to help you chivalrously with a cheeky grin.
"Thank you, kind sir," you tease as you step out of the car. He laughs, taking your bag from you and throwing it over his shoulder along with his own.
"I'm so excited," Junhyeon relays, grabbing your hand and forcing you to jump up and down with him as you walk up to your parents' front door. "I can't believe I'm about to meet the people who made you who you are! I bet they're just as fun as you."
"Well..." You start to interject, but he continues on.
"Ugh, I've seen this moment in dramas a bunch of times. The male lead is always stressing out about meeting 'the family'," Junhyeon babbles as you ring the doorbell. "It's so annoying! Like, what are you so worried about? That your father-in-law is going to--."
Just then, the door swings open to reveal your dad. Six-foot-four and brawny, a greying mustache, and wearing his Marines t-shirt that you always begged him not to wear when you had guests over, your dad blinks back at the two of you in the doorway.
"Kill you," Junhyeon finishes his sentence in a whisper as he takes in your dad's massive build.
Your dad gives you a warm smile. "Hey, peanut," he says gruffly, then turns to Junhyeon; giving him a once over. "So you're the boyfriend?"
“YES, SIR!” Junhyeon jumps to attention, dropping your hand as quickly as possible and saluting your dad. "I AM THE BOYFRIEND, SIR!"
Your dad shoots you a concerned look as you reach up and pry your boyfriend's hand from his forehead. "Dad, this is Junhyeon."
"Junhyeon, huh?" Your dad nods thoughtfully. "I had a buddy in the service named Junhyeon."
Your boyfriend grins and you can tell he's revving up for a joke. "Is he handsome, too? I wouldn't want you to get us mixed up."
"He's dead," your dad announces dryly.
Your bag drops from Junhyeon's shoulder to the ground as shock takes over his whole body.
Your dad snorts. "I'm just messing with ya, kid. Come on in; your mother's setting the table."
Shaking your head hopelessly, you finally step past your dad through the door and into the house. When you realize Junhyeon isn't following you, you turn around to see what the hold up is.
"Junhyeon?" You begin to question before you see your boyfriend on the ground in a full bow in front of your father.
"Thank you for letting me into your home, sir. I appreciate so deeply your hospitality and kindness," Junhyeon pleads as you walk back over to him and pull him up by the neck of his t-shirt.
"Let's go," you say exasperatedly, dragging him through the front door and into your house. Your mom walks out from the kitchen into the living room, smiling at you.
"Hi, peanut," she greets softly, giving you a pat on the cheek before turning to your boyfriend. "It's nice to meet you, Junhyeon."
Junhyeon nods respectfully at your mom, whose hair is tied up in a tight bun with her rectangular framed glasses sitting towards the end of her nose. A research librarian, your mom was quiet and caring by nature-- but she valued discipline and quiet just as much as your dad while you were growing up.
"You kids can drop your things off upstairs and freshen up before we eat," your mom directs. "There's clean sheets on the guest room to the right."
Junhyeon's eyes bug incredulously. "We--... You want us to sleep in the same room!?"
Your mom glances at you. "Is that a problem?"
Junhyeon nods vigorously, checking over his shoulder to see your dad sitting in the arm chair behind you. "We won't be sharing a bed until we're married!"
You grab your boyfriend's sleeve, pulling him towards the stairs and up to the guest room-- shutting the door quickly behind you.
"Baby, what the hell are you doing?" You ask, watching as Junhyeon sits down on the bed quite cautiously.
"I--... I don't know," he says, shaking his head in disbelief. "I'm so scared."
You can't help but laugh at your boyfriend's complete attitude change. In the car he couldn't shut up about how good he is with parents; how his friends' dads always adore him more than their own sons...
And now, here he is: head in his hands on the verge of combustion from terror.
"I know they can come off a little intimidating at first," you soothe, walking over to Junhyeon. He rests his head on your stomach and you run your fingers through his hair soothingly. "But I promise their bite isn't nearly as bad as their bark."
"He's so big," Junhyeon whispers. "How does he even fit through the door?"
"Well, they actually had custom doorframes built in this new house..." You trail off when you see him looking up at you with a worry you'd never really seen on him before. "Hyeonni, it's going to be absolutely fine. Didn't you say you were excited to meet the people who made me who I am?"
Junhyeon laughs sadly. "But you're so... I mean, you're..."
"Fun? Light-hearted? Whimsical? Care-free?" You suggest, Junhyeon nodding enthusiastically in response.
"Exactly!" He agrees, eyes widening as he makes a clarification. "Not that there's anything wrong with them or anything! You're just really different, is all."
“I actually evolved more in response to my upbringing," you say with a sigh. "Not in accordance with it."
Junhyeon puckers his lips cutely and you lean down to kiss him. He wraps his arms around your waist tightly, deepening the kiss.
"Two minutes!" Your mom calls up the stairs, causing Junhyeon to jump back up to attention-- almost knocking you over in the process. He catches you quickly with one arm and spins you around, placing you down firmly in the spot he was just sitting.
"Trying to steal my innocence," he shames, clicking his tongue and shaking his head disapprovingly as he makes his way to the bathroom. "It's like you want your dad to bury me in the backyard."
~
You watch as Junhyeon takes very careful, calculated bites of his steak; cutting respectfully with the knife and fork provided to him. Usually he'd just shove the meat in his face and nearly swallow it whole.
"I heard you were thinking of moving in together," your mom says, smiling politely at the two of you.
Junhyeon blinks nervously. "No, no. Me and her? No. No way. Absolutely not."
"Oh," your mom replies in surprise. "(Y/N) told us that--."
Junhyeon interrupts: "(Y/N) is an evil temptress and I am but a mere victim."
Your dad chokes on his water.
"Junhyeon," you try to intercept to no avail.
"We will not be moving in together. We don't have any physical contact-- not even platonically. This is actually the first time I've seen her in a month," your panicked boyfriend rambles, the lies just rolling off his tongue.
"Son, if you're worries about offending us--," your dad tries to deescalate but Junhyeon continues.
“I don’t even look at her, sir!"
“You don’t look at her?” Your dad repeats, brows furrowed concernedly as he glances at you.
Junhyeon shakes his head furiously. “I respect your daughter far too much to taint her with my gaze, SIR!"
“Junhyeon—," you try again.
“I only plan to look at her for the first time on our wedding day!”
One last time, you try, “Hyeonni—.”
“Hyeonni!?” Junhyeon’s eyes bug out of his head incredulously, his voice lowering to a whisper. “Are you crazy!? Your dad could kill me with his bare hands.”
Your dad looks down at his hands with a frown as he freezes in the middle of cutting his steak.
“He’s literally holding a knife!” Junhyeon exclaims, giving up on his piss poor attempt to be discreet. “(Y/N), I know you want me, but you can’t have me if I’m dead!”
Suddenly, your dad begins to laugh heartily-- something you've only heard about a handful of times in your life. “Where did you find this guy, peanut? He’s got quite the sense of humor.”
"He does. Doesn't he?" You agree tersely, glaring at your boyfriend.
Your dad places his fork and knife down, announcing decisively: "I like him."
Your eyes widen in surprise as Junhyeon stares back at your father, equally stunned. "You do?"
"You do!?" Junhyeon repeats hopefully, clasping his hands together as if he's praying for it to be true.
Your dad picks his fork and knife back up, continuing to cut into his steak. "He's a little odd, but I think he really likes you... In his own way."
Junhyeon nods enthusiastically. "I do! I really do!"
You smile at him, biting your lip as you look at the sweet, considerate, and absolutely insane boy sitting next to you.
"I really like him, too."
~
Junhyeon flops down on the bed, arms above his head as he smiles happily to himself.
The night had passed by fairly smoothly after that-- your parents patting you on the back lovingly and congratulating you on finding such a good match for yourself.
"That was awesome," Junhyeon says with a sigh. "I don't know what you were so worried about!"
You chew your cheek as you grin, suppressing the urge to smack him. "You wouldn't even kiss me, you were so worried," he says, sitting up and looking around with his eyebrows raised as if he's checking that no one else is in the room. Finally, he gazes back up at you with a shrug.
"Wanna make out?"

"No, no. Me and (Y/N)? No. No way. Absolutely not."
"Oh," your mom replies in surprise. "(Y/N) told us that--."
Junhyeon interrupts: "(Y/N) is an evil seducer and I am but a mere victim."
Your dad chokes on his water.
"Junhyeon," you try to intercept to no avail.
"We will not be moving in together. We don't have any physical contact-- not even platonically. This is actually the first time I've seen them in a month," your panicked boyfriend rambles, the lies just rolling off his tongue.
"Son, if you're worries about offending us--," your dad tries to deescalate but Junhyeon continues.
“I don’t even look at them, sir!"
“You don’t look at them?” Your dad repeats, brows furrowed concernedly as he glances at you.
Junhyeon shakes his head furiously. “I respect your child far too much to taint them with my gaze, SIR!"
“Junhyeon—," you try again.
“I only plan to look at them for the first time on our wedding day!”

He's Doing The Thing Again
Tumblr media
wc: 1.2k warnings: angst, but it's so not serious; fluffy fluff pronouns: n/a; none used summary: junhyeon gets jealous when he sees your bp voting certificate ~bp masterlist~ ♡ ~kofi (no pressure at all)~ hi hi hi here's a drama king junhyeon drabble... he's only 5 so i think we can let the behavior slide
"Give me that," Junhyeon says, reaching to take the bottle of ketchup you're struggling with out of your hands.
You pull it back. "I've got it."
He snorts. "You absolutely do not. You're so cute, but your weak little fingers are so useless."
"Okay, rude," you reply with a huff, but you surrender the bottle to Junhyeon anyway. He was right: it was either your pride or ketchup. And you needed ketchup.
Junhyeon screws off the cap with ease, passing it back to you to drown your burger in. But just as you're about to squeeze, a faint alarm starts to sound.
"Is that your phone, babe?" A concerned look crosses Junhyeon's face as he lowers his voice to a whisper. "Do you need to take medicine or something? Are you okay? Did you develop a disease while I was gone and not want to burden me with it?"
You pick up your phone, reading the name of the alarm:
VOTE FOR BOYS PLANET
You hold up your phone so Junhyeon can read the name of the alarm from across the table and then hit 'stop'. He grins back at you and takes a sip of his Coke.
"Way more important than any secret disease honestly. You better get on that immediately."
You nod, giggling. "You're right. I'll do it now so I don't forget."
Opening the Mnet app on your phone, you quickly pull up the voting screen and start scrolling through the various contestants. Your boyfriend stands up from his seat and slides into your side of the booth, gently tugging your phone towards him and placing it flat on the table in between both of you.
"What are you doing?" You ask with a laugh, praying your cheeks don't noticeably redden as he snakes his arm around your waist and pulls you in closer to him.
"This is exciting! I haven't been here to watch you vote for me in person. I need to see it with my own eyes," he explains ecstaticly, his leg bouncing up and down a bit with anticipation.
You bite your lip, suppressing a grin at Junhyeon's entirely contagious energy. "Okay, okay. Watch away."
As you resume your scrolling, you can feel the blush you were dreading spread across your cheeks as Junhyeon stares at the side of your face rather than the screen-- playing sweetly with the hem of your shirt. Not so carefully, you finish selecting the three boys you're voting for today and hit confirm, proving that you're not a robot and turning down the volume of your phone when the annoying ad starts to play.
"Yay, all done!" Your announcement reminds Junhyeon to finally turn his attention away from you and towards the phone screen. You feel your body temperature start to return to normal.
"Look at my love voting for--," Junhyeon starts, absolutely beaming with pride. But he soon cuts himself off, his eyebrows furrowing as he picks up your phone and brings it closer to his face to examine it. After a moment, he continues, "...Gunwook."
You look up at him with confusion. "What?"
"Gunwook," he repeats softly.
You observe him now, the pout forming on his lips and the forlorn look in his eyes. "Baby, why are you saying Gunwook?"
"BECAUSE YOU DON'T LOVE ME ANYMORE!" The exclamation is paired with the sudden folding of his arms on the table and his head thumping down atop them. The dramatic display clamors your silverware loudly and you smile nervously at the onlookers in the booth across from you.
"Hyeonni!" You whisper-shout at him, trying to pry him back upright to no avail. "What are you talking about? Of course I still love you!"
He groans loudly, causing the people at the booth across from you to glance over again. You smile and nod apologetically, now resorting to softly but rapidly hitting your boyfriend's back to get him to stop.
"Junhyeon, please! Stop making a scene, baby."
He sits up at that, sinking back into the booth with his arms folded across his chest. "You never let me make a scene," he says, sulking to the nth degree. Mumbling, he adds, "Bet you'd let Wookie make a scene."
You close your eyes and take a deep breath, trying to maintain your composure at your boyfriend who was always willing to demonstrate his dramatic acting chops no matter the location.
When you open your eyes, you reach for your phone to text your friend the phrase you so often texted her: he's doing the thing again.
You're stopped in your tracks, however, when you see your Boys Planet voting certificate still open on your phone screen. Your eyebrows raise as you see the list of trainees you'd chosen while very clearly distracted by your boyfriend's affection. Listed in order of chosen first to last, the certificate reads:
Park Gunwook. Zhang Hao. Kum Junhyeon.
"Oh my god! Hyeonni... I'm really sorry," you relent, turning towards him and meeting his eyes.
He sighs dejectedly. "It's fine, just invite me to the wedding I guess."
You hit him playfully and laugh, latching onto his arm and cuddling up to him in the restaurant booth. "Baby, of course I was going to choose you first. And I always vote Gunwook third. But you completely sabotaged my voting process with your charm. I haven't seen you in awhile-- you should have know I would be more susceptible to it! When you really examine the whole situation, it does seem to be your fault..."
He sits up abruptly, grabbing both of your shoulders and grinning from ear to ear. "So you DO still love me!?"
"Of course I still love you!" You exclaim, reaching up to pull his cute cheeks closer to you so you can kiss each of them.
You could swear you see a light blush color Junhyeon's face as he smiles affectionately back at you. "Waaaaah! I was really my own downfall there. And to think I was considering making a scene..."
You roll your eyes at the crazy person that is your boyfriend.
Junhyeon is visibly swelling with pride as he affirms, "But your boyfriend's irresistible charm kept you from voting him first like you always do."
You laugh nervously. "Um... Exactly, Hyeonni..."
"Let me see the rest of your voting certificates! I want to see one with me listed first," he says, quickly snatching your phone from your hand to open your photos.
"Junhyeon, wait!" You warn, but your effort is futile. You watch as he scrolls through weeks of your voting certificates and, though you know the upsetting data they contain, his smile doesn't fade.
It's somehow even more concerning than watching it fade.
Finally, Junhyeon puts your phone back down on the table. He stares blankly at your dinner plate for a few moments before he quietly and carefully speaks. "So when you said that I messed up your voting order... what you meant is that I kept you from voting Zhang Hao first."
You wince. "I don't vote him first every day! I vote you first more than half of the time, baby-- you saw that! I have a... very specific rotation."
"OH, COME ON!" Junhyeon cries, his whole upper body collapsing back onto the table with a thud.
You pick up your phone and dial a familiar number, hearing it click and not even waiting for a hello to speak:
"Hi. He's doing the thing again..."

Gummy Worms
Tumblr media
wc: 2.3k pronouns: none used; n/a -- reader is a trainee at boys planet, but it's just a story so you can pretend any gender is allowed to compete; it doesn't affect the story! warnings: light swears; some mean!junhyeon but fluffy ending; gunwook and gyuvin being absolutely on one summary: junhyeon has really messed up by using an immature method to get rivaltrainee!reader's perpetual attention; can the en garde team convince him to turn it around? ~bp masterlist~ ♡ ~kofi (no pressure at all)~ guys i just know gyuvin and gunwook are actually like this. this is basically just as much about the rest of dog union as it is about junhyeon so it's slightly insane in the best way. somebody save hao from all those nutcases in zb1 LMAO. had a bunch of requests for junhyeon, because he's the best. so i just compiled a couple of them into this baby. :)
"I can fit ten gummy worms in my mouth," Gyuvin brags, smiling smugly at his friends as he stuffs one, two, five, ten gummy worms into his cheeks.
"That's so gross," Gunwook replies, his face twisting up in fascinated disgust. "But I bet I can fit twenty."
The tall boy is just about to shove a gummy worm in his mouth when the door to the En Garde practice room opens. Hoetaek, Seunghwan and Hiroto come rushing in, joining the three members of the Dog Union where they're sitting on the floor.
As Seunghwan plops himself down, his face contorts. "Gyuvin, what the hell is in your mouth?"
"Only ten gummy worms," Gunwook answers for Gyuvin, who is trying to chew the gelatinous mountain of candy in vain. "Wanna see me fit twenty?"
Seunghwan shakes his head. "No, I do not."
Junhyeon sighs audibly. It's only now that the other three boys notice that the loudest trainee has yet to say a word.
"Is something wrong, Junhyeon?" Hiroto asks politely.
Junhyeon sighs again; even deeper this time for dramatic effect as he bemoans, "No."
Hoetaek snorts. "You clearly want us to know something is wrong, so please just get on with it already."
"Geez, tough crowd," Junhyeon relents, leaning back on his hands.
"ISJ COAUGE YARNOIME ISJN HIUA YIH!" Gyuvin tries to say through the gummy worms in his mouth.
"What?" Seunghwan asks, eyes filled with judgment as he stares at the younger boy.
"He said it's cause (Y/N) isn't here yet," Gunwook clarifies, popping a gummy worm into his own mouth.
Hoetaek's brow furrows in confusion. "Why would you be upset about that, Junhyeon? I mean, you've been pretty vocal about your dislike for (Y/N)."
"ISJ AHR OM OCK!" Gyuvin attempts to contribute again.
The other boys look to Gunwook expectantly for a translation.
"He said it's all an act," Gunwook relays, whipping his hair from his eyes and throwing another gummy worm onto his tongue.
"What? What do you mean its all an act?" Hiroto asks.
"HIJ OCKSH--."
"That's it," Hoe Taek reprimands sternly, pointing to the garbage can in the corner of the room. "Go spit all of that out right now!"
Gyuvin pouts, chipmunk cheeks still stuffed full of gummy worms as he stands up and walks over to the garbage can sadly.
"And Junhyeon-- just speak for yourself, please," Hoe Taek adds.
Junhyeon nods slowly, chewing his bottom lip. "I actually--."
"HIJ OCKSHOOIRE EEN LUBBIT YERUNOIWE!" Gunwook jumbles, mouth now full to the brim with gummy worms as the rest of the boys turn to look at him. He holds up two fingers and three fingers on either hand respectively to indicate the number of gummy worms he was able to stuff in his cheeks.
The other three boys groan exasperatedly as Gunwook hops up and skips over to the trash can next to Gyuvin.
"That was awesome, buddy," Gyuvin praises with a grin, giving his younger friend a high-five on his way back to the circle. As he sits down, he adds, "Oh, and he said it's cause Junhyeon's actually in love with (Y/N)."
Junhyeon's eyes widen in panic as he hits Gyuvin's arm. "That's--... That's not--... I wasn't gonna say all that, you idiot!"
"Ow," the taller boy whines, rubbing the spot where Junhyeon had hit him. "And I didn't say it-- I was just translating for Wook, remember?"
"Wait," Hoetaek interjects, eyes filled with confusion. "Is that true, Hyeonni? Then why do you fight with (Y/N) pretty much every chance you get?"
"Uh," Junhyeon stammers, wincing as he gives his answer. "Because that's the only way I could get (Y/N) to talk to me..."
"WHAT!?" Seunghwan exclaims, turning his head to glare at Gunwook and Gyuvin who have resumed eating gummy worms. "And you two knew about this? Why didn't you stop him!?"
"We tried to tell him it would be better to just be himself," Gunwook attempts to defend. "But he said he wouldn't take advice from us even if we paid him to."
The other three boys stare at Gunwook and Gyuvin for a moment, remnants of gummy worm mush still on their baby faces. Finally, they all nod in agreement.
"Yeah, no, that makes sense," Hiroto concurs.
"Can't blame him for that," Seunghwan chimes.
Junhyeon sighs. "What am I gonna do now? If I keep picking on (Y/N), then I'm hated. But if I stop, I go back to basically not existing."
"You could just be honest, Junhyeon," Hoetaek advises, eyes softening at the much younger boy in front of him. "The next time you see (Y/N), you can just tell the truth about why you've been acting so mean and you can drop this--."
In the middle of Hoetaek's pep talk, the door to the practice room flies open as you quickly run in and sit down in the circle; completely out of breath.
"Stop panting so hard-- I can smell your breath from here," Junhyeon jabs immediately.
"Oh god," Hoetaek mumbles, head falling to his hands hopelessly.
"You should hold your breath then," you reply with a sneer. "Forever."
Junhyeon glares, jaw setting irritatedly. "Why were you so late anyway?"
You nod to Hoetaek and the others apologetically. "I'm so sorry, I had to take an urgent call. It won't happen again."
"No worries," Hoetaek forgives with a smile. "I think we should probably start this afternoon by solidifying our parts now that we're down a few team members. Should we begin with the Killing Part?"
Everyone nods, preparing themselves for another mini audition.
"Wookie has it now, of course, but I think you'll find it hard not to give it to the handsomest member of the team," Junhyeon jokes, pointing to himself and smizing.
The rest of the boys laugh, but you just roll your eyes. “You might have a shot if you miraculously develop some talent to match those looks.”
Seunghwan and Hoetaek glance at each other nervously as Hiroto looks down awkwardly at his lap.
Gunwook's eyes widen in bewilderment. "Wait, did (Y/N) just inadvertently agree that Junhyeon’s handsome?"
Gyuvin reaches his hand into the bag of gummy worms beside him, eyes locked on the scene playing out in front of them. "Ssssh," he hisses, shoveling the handful of candy into his mouth and chewing loudly. "It's getting good."
"Well, you might have a better chance at the killing part if you had any looks to back up that talent..." Junhyeon counters.
You laugh at his comeback. “At least I can meaningfully contribute to my team’s performance.”
“What does it matter when no one wants you on their team to begin with!?”
"Oh shit," Gyuvin whispers.
"This is bad," Gunwook agrees, shoveling a handful of gummy worms into his own mouth now. "This is really bad."
You can’t help the way your face suddenly falls.
“You’re only on this team in the first place because your fans voted you in,” Junhyeon digs in further. “And you’re only still on it because Park Hanbin self-sacrificed.”
“Junhyeon—,” Hoetaek attempts to mediate, but it’s too late.
“What are you trying to say?" You ask, a lump forming in your throat.
"That literally nobody here likes you!"
The room is silent as your eyes begin to sting. You fruitlessly try to blink away the unexpected tears welling up in them.
"Junhyeon," Hoetaek scolds, frowning at the younger boy.
“What!?” Junhyeon’s eyebrows raise incredulously. “(Y/N)'s the one who called me untalented!”
As you look around, you now notice that all of your teammates are staring directly at you. Was Junhyeon telling the truth? Did nobody here like you?
You’re not sure why, but you’re becoming a bit overwhelmed. You didn’t sign up for this stupid show to be part of some bullshit rivalry with a boy you had once thought was really nice. Why had Junhyeon decided to pick on you that day? And why had you played along?
Embarrassed, you stand up from the circle and rush out of the practice room. You can hear Hoetaek call your name, but you just don't want to talk right now as you find your way to an empty practice room down the hall and step inside. Wiping your tears, you wonder why the boy that told you he liked your shoes on the first day had become such an affliction to your journey here.
Suddenly, the door bursts open and you're shocked to see Junhyeon standing in front of you looking quite distressed.
"(Y/N), I--," he starts, but you cut him off.
"Save it, Junhyeon. I'm just… I’m just gonna go home."
His eyebrows raise in shock. "What!? Why would you do that?"
“You said it yourself, Junhyeon,” you spit angrily, but your trembling bottom lip gives you away. “Nobody here likes me.”
"You--..." The boy in front of you swallows hard before softly shaking his head. “That’s not true.”
“Yes, it is,” you counter. “I know I can be too much of a perfectionist and it comes off harshly. I know I’m not great at making conversation— especially when there are so many extroverts here. And I know that I—.”
“I like you.”
You stare back at Junhyeon unblinkingly. “What?”
“It can’t be true that nobody likes you,” he explains, biting his bottom lip anxiously. “Because I like you.”
You’re not exactly sure what it is that Junhyeon is trying to confess. You study him, waiting for his expression to give away his intentions.
"I--... Ugh," he groans exasperatedly, leaning against the wall and sinking down to the floor. Head in his hands, he rubs his forehead as if he's relieving some tension before finally looking back up at you. "I'm sorry I've been so mean to you. But you wouldn't pay attention to me any other way. You just saw me as a nuisance then."
"I never stopped seeing you as a nuisance," you respond quietly.
"No, I became more than a nuisance. I'm a plague," he replies, nodding at you slowly. "Your own personal plague. And I'd do it all again if it meant you'd keep saying more than two words to me every day."
You suddenly feel entirely breathless as you process his words. Junhyeon's eyes are wide and earnest, lips parted as he seems to grapple with the confession himself. He looks innocent... almost cute like this, you catch yourself thinking. Just like you had thought he looked that first week. But as the shock fades, an immediate anger takes its place.
"Oh my god," you whisper, shaking your head in disbelief at the absolute idiot sitting in front of you with his knees hugged to his chest. "Where are we-- ... A playground? Are you five freaking years old!?"
Junhyeon starts to pout, raising his hand up to give you his signature aegyo but you swat it down before he can extend his five fingers.
"Don't you dare," you warn, narrowing your eyes as you frown at him in disapproval. Junhyeon sighs, pout remaining on his lips as he averts your gaze. "You must've talked to Gyuvin and Gunwook about this. Didn't either of them tell you that you were being a childish jerk!?"
Junhyeon nods sadly. "Yes. Many times."
"And you just decided not to believe them or?"
"Don't act like you don't know that Gyuvin, Gunwook and I share exactly one braincell. And if you'd experienced that braincell first hand, you wouldn't trust anything they say either!"
You tilt your head slightly as you consider it. "Okay, that is a valid point actually."
Junhyeon stands up now, taking a deep breath as he steadies himself on his feet. "I'm really sorry, (Y/N). None of what I said earlier was true. You're a bit intimidating, but it's just because you're so good at everything. Everybody thinks you're really cool-- including me. And..."
Your eyebrows raise expectantly as Junhyeon gives you a sheepish smile.
"And you're definitely not ugly either. Like, not at all. You're like... You're, like, really attractive," Junhyeon confesses clumsily. "And your breath actually smells really good, like, always. You smell really good in general. And sometimes you act really cute, too-- like when you think nobody's looking."
Your bottom lip tucks between your teeth involuntarily as the boy who's given you hell for the past month rambles quite passionately about how eye-catching he thinks you are.
"But I'm always looking," he finishes; throwing up his hands in defense as he reconsiders his words. "Not like in a creepy way though! I just meant, like--."
"Thanks," you say simply. "That's... thank you."
He nods quickly. "Yeah. You're welcome."
An uncomfortably awkward silence falls over both of you as you stare at each other. Finally, you gesture to the door.
"Uh, I guess we can probably--," you start to motion.
"Oh, yeah, for sure," Junhyeon agrees, walking to the door with you. You can't help but notice how glum the usually hyperactive boy looks now. And you also can’t lie that his rambling confession had sort of really made your heart flutter.
As you grab the handle, you pause for a moment and turn back to Junhyeon. "I'm sorry you felt like I thought you were a nuisance that first week. That wasn't my intention."
"Oh, it's okay--," he starts to brush off your apology humbly, but you interject quickly.
"I just had such a big crush on you that I could never figure out what to say," you finish, turning away immediately as you push the door open and step out into the hallway.
As expected, you don't hear footsteps behind you as you exit the room. What you do hear is the door to the practice room clicking closed, followed by the only slightly muffled sonic boom of Junhyeon shouting:
"LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!"

Boys Planet Dual Position Battle, final bits and thoughts
Tumblr media
This recap will cover the final point reveals from the end of episode 7, as well as my final thoughts on the performances, including my own ranking and my analysis of MNET screentime allocation (I have the numbers, my loves).
Ranking announcement from the end of ep 6
Ok, here’s the ranking announcement from the end of episode 6. At this point, ep 8 is probably out, so this is out of date, but it’s still kind of interesting.
What I did is, I put the votes in my spreadsheet and found the average number of votes per trainee, which turned out to be 818,005. Then I had the spreadsheet calculate what percent of the average vote each person’s vote was. I think that helps put the number of votes in perspective. For example, international sweetheart Sung Hanbin’s 3.3 million votes represented 404% of the average (in other words, more than four times the average!). Meanwhile, poor Feel Special member Lee Donggun’s 81,739 votes represents about 10% of the average. Ouch.
What’s kind of interesting is that the top 15 were all 123% or more of the average or higher, while from 16 to 51, they were all 89% or lower of the average. It’s really a kind of haves and have-nots situation here.
People who were on a team that got the 100,000 benefit will be marked in blue. People who also got the 150,000 personal benefit will be marked in purple. Members of Zoom are marked in green (because I think they should have won.)

The Performances, the votes, and the rankings
In the last ten minutes or so of episode 7, they gather the trainees together in what might be the space where the audience usually stands, and torture them for a bit before finally revealing how many votes each team got. The winner within each category gets to perform on MNET countdown, each member gets 100,000 extra points, and the number one ranked team member on that team gets an extra 150,000 extra points.
Below, I list the songs, the audience votes they received, and the total screen time (adding up the episode 6 segment and the longer segment in episode 6 or 7). I list them in order of audience vote.
Vocal and Rap
Tomboy 860 votes, 27 minutes of screentime
Man in love 752 votes, 14.5 minutes of screentime
Limousine 719 votes, 13.5 minutes of screentime
Not Spring… 617 votes, 15 minutes of screentime
Winner: Tomboy; Zhang Hao gets the extra benefit
My thoughts:
My favorite is easily Limousine. I just loved this performance. Man in Love and Not Spring were about tied for me; each had one singer I quite enjoy and a few singers I don’t enjoy as much, and neither was a song that I exactly want to listen to over and over. I guess Tomboy actually came in last for me -- I would rather listen to any of the other three again than listen to Tomboy again. If I’m watching the performances, then I’d rather watch Limousine the most -- the performance is so emotional and so good -- but after, that I’d obviously choose to watch Man in Love to see TaeRae’s weird elf face that I like so much. So, putting all that together, my rank is:
Limousine
Man in Love
Not Spring…
Tomboy
Vocal and Dance
Love Killa 840 votes, 20.5 minutes minutes of screentime
Home 716 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Feel Special 677 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Butterfly 664 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Winner: Love Killa; Kim Gyuvin gets the extra votes
My thoughts:
None of these performances exactly floated my boat. Love Killa was marred by sort of blank performances, in my opinion (though it’s cool with me if you liked it, hope I’m not yucking your yum). Home was lovely at times but marred by tight, strained vocals here and there. Feel Special was a mess, brightened by Woongki's cuteness and, honestly, Z-bo's cheerful performance (I'm not his biggest fan, but it's not like the audience vote came out of completely nowhere). And Butterfly just sort of fell apart, as beautiful as Chen Kuan Jui's dancing was. I don’t really want to watch any of these performances again, or listen to them either.
I tried thinking, ok, which one would I want to watch a fancam of? For example, if it was a fancam of Gyuvin from Love Killa vs. a fancam of Woongki from Feel Special vs. a fancam of Chen Kuan Jui from Butterfly vs. a fancam of Yoon Jong Woo from Home, which would I prefer? And I found myself just ranking them based on how much I like the song itself. So my ranking is meaningless. They're all tied for 2nd place. No one is in first. First place is held in reserve for how good Love Killa would have been if Yoon Jong Woo and/or Ricky had been in the group instead of Matthew and/or Seo Won. (Sorry! I love Seo Won and want to get fro-yo with him, but the song didn't really suit him.)
Rap and Dance
Law 846 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Zoom 813 votes, 14 minutes  of screentime
Gang 798 votes, 12 minutes of screentime
Rush Hour 742 votes, 20.5 minutes of screentime
Winner: Law; Park Hanbin gets the extra votes
My thoughts:
This one is easy. Zoom. Zoom is my winner, hands down.
I can see why Law won. It was exciting and sexy and the boys looked good. I like all five of these trainees a lot and think they're great performers. But here’s the thing about Law -- it’s so fucking good the first few times you watch it, but then it gets kind of dull. It’s just all kind of monotonous dancing, you know? Yeah, there’s the stupid flag wave, but there’s nothing else to break it up.
In contrast, I keep noticing more cool things about Zoom as I watch it over and over. Like, the detail of how, when Wumuti does that kind of lifted leg butt wiggle on the line, “Wumumutiti!,”  the other trainees do a far scaled down version of the move, so that they’re supporting him but your eye still stays on Wumuti. It’s so subtle, but it’s cool because it controls where your focus is. I like being led around visually as I watch a dance -- tell me where I should look, choreography! Also, and I’m aware that this isn’t a unique take, but I love the way that the end of each rap section connects to the beginning of the next one. It makes it all feel like this is a real team, not just trainees who got stuck with each other. And I get so excited when I hear Wumuti’s awesome screech “Lights Camera Action baby!” and I know it’s Haruto’s dance break. YES!!!! Haruto, hit that breakdance pose and hold it for the camera click sound! It’s also so fun to watch Haruto’s fan cam and see him cheerfully clowning around with the other trainees when they were on the sidelines, during the performance. Ollie's cute rap, Hyunbeen saying "braggadocious," it's all so charming. They’re just all having so much fun. They’re IN the performance.
For the record, I assume it was Keita behind most of what’s good here. From what I’ve heard, he did basically everything for this song, and did a lot in previous challenges, too. Keita’s so good that even MNET’s editing can’t hide him. The judges won’t shut up about him and every single other trainee respects him. I’m so glad that the audience sees it too.
So, Law won over Zoom in part (in my opinion) because Law was sexier -- I have a whole other post about how I think that Zoom’s styling really brought them down. But it may also have been the scheduling. I saw someone talking (in the comments section of The Bias List) about how she was in the audience for the taping of these performances! Jealous. According to her, it took ages and ages, with lots of time in between performances. She says Zoom was the last performance and by then, it was midnight and the audience was exhausted by then. But the team started performing and it was so energetic and fun that everyone in the audience jumped into life again. This is all according to a person on the internet, I can’t substantiate it, but I don’t know, it kind of rings true.
It would be like MNET to try to sabotage Keita. Production had to know how good Zoom was and that it was likely to win, which would give 100,000 points to Ollie, Wumuti, Haruto, and Park Hyunbeen, and almost certainly would mean 250,000 points for Keita. If you look at the vote list above, you can see how much 100,000 points would mean for most members on this team. Yes this is just an interim vote and the final tally would be bigger overall, but even so, 100,000 points would help lock Haruto into safe territory, it would probably ensure Ollie's survival, and it would give Wumuti and Hyunbeen a fighting chance. 250,000 more votes might also move Keita up one space in the top 9. Scheduling Zoom last meant that it was an exhausted, cranky crowd who were voting, and that probably hurt it.
Anyway, enough about Zoom and Law. What about the other two groups?
As for Ggang, I think it was never going to appeal to me much because the song itself isn’t really my style. It’s not the trainees’ fault at all -- they did a decent job. But nothing about this performance specifically grabbed my attention to where I’d want to watch it over and over, and my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon's shirt lift joke didn’t strike my fancy.
And of course, Rush Hour just drags my spirit down when I try to watch it. I don’t know if I’d feel differently if I didn’t know the back story, but I do know the backstory, and I can’t turn that part of my brain off.
So in the end, I guess my rank is:
Zoom
Zoom
Zoom
The other teams
Oh, and here’s my pie chart of the number of minutes devoted to each team. It’s kind of wild to see how little time was devoted to Zoom compared to Tomboy, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
As for the new songs that they’re going to be performing for the “Artist Battle”...
Oriental Pop “Switch” - sounds like a lost NCT Dream song
Sentimental Hip Hop “SuperCharger” - fast paced, kind of like Law
R&B Pop “Over Me” is sexy and charismatic
New-tro synth pop “Say My Name” is cute and lighthearted
Funk Pop “En garde” is sort of weirdly forgettable.
Based on my theory on how important sexiness is, I think most of them will want #3, whether it suits them or not. Dancer types like Wang Zi Hao will probably want #2, and cutie pies like Woongki will probably want #4. It’ll be fun to see who ends up in which group, and whether it was the song they wanted or not. I’ll especially be interested in where the fans put Matthew, because he keeps trying to do sexy concepts and I think he’d be much better suited for something more like #4.
Ok! We're finally done! And episode 8 is out. In fact, it's been out for a week if you knew where to look, and I did know where to look, but I have held back and didn't spoil myself.
Hope you're having a lovely day, hope that good things happen to you, and hope that all your pants are real sparkly. See you in the next one!

Boys Planet Episode 8 Recap and Guide, Part 2
Tumblr media
Ok, welcome back to Boys Planet Recaps! In the previous post, I covered the reveals of trainees ranked 27 through 12. This post will cover 1-11, as well as chair 28. Let’s go!
So, let’s look over the full list of trainees whose names have not yet been called.
Trainee Recap
For each trainee, I’ll list their rank at the first elimination in episode 5, as well as their rank mentioned at the end of ep 6, and the songs they did for the two previous missions.
Name                      rank-5/ rank-6             Previous Songs

So, I’ll give you a moment to decide for yourself who you think the top 11 most reasonably are.
Yeah, that’s what I think, too.
It’s pretty obvious that the top 11 are, in some order: Han Yu Jin, Hui, Keita, Kim Gyu Vin, Kim Ji Woong, Kim Tae Rae, Kum Jun Hyeon, Park Gunwook, Seok Matthew, Sung Hanbin, and Zhang Hao.
And I’d say any of the following are conceivable for chair 28: Anthonny, Brian, Cai Jin Xin, Hiroto, Jung Min Gyu, Ma Jing Xiang, or Mun Jung Hyun.
So the only real suspense here is which person will survive in 28th position, because we already know that the top 11 all survive. MNET VASTLY overestimates how fascinating I will find the ranking within the top 11, and tends to drag it out. Am I alone on this? Does anyone else feel like, well, they survived, and the ranking can and will change, so who gives a rat's butt as to who came in first versus second or third?
Anyway, let's get to the ranking!
At 2:14:10 the trainees are settling in to this phase of the eliminations. My little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon tells little muffin Mun that he’s nervous, and Mun tells Kum that he [Kum] is a candidate for top 9.
Just then, we’re told that the candidates for 9th place -- in other words, those in spots 9, 10, and 11 -- are General Gunwook, Hui, and yes, my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon.
Tumblr media
Gunwook was expecting this in a good way; Hui was expecting this in a bad way; and Kum Jun Hyeon didn’t even know he could hope for this.
Everyone is shocked that Hui could have dropped so far, but he just nods kind of resignedly. As he said earlier in this episode, even he wouldn’t vote for an idol in his 30s, after all.
So who is 11th place?
At 2:16:15, Huta announces that it’s Hui.
Tumblr media
For a moment, there’s just silence.
Low key saw this coming from the start. For one thing, because Hui is great at everything he does, there’s very little vulnerability there, so it’s hard to feel that affection for him that I feel for some of the other trainees, even the ones I wouldn’t vote for, like Takuto or Bak Doha. For another thing, Hui is already a debuted idol. A lot of people would say that he had his shot.
There is also the Pentagon Paradox.
Consider: Everyone in the world is either a Pentagon fan, or not a Pentagon fan. I'm not talking about antis, I'm just talking about people who aren't specifically big fans of Pentagon. If you are a fan, like I am, then of course you’d want to support Hui in general in his endeavors. I wanted Hui to survive and do well on the show because I didn't want him humiliated or made miserable. But now that we're coming to the home stretch, my feelings are changing. As a Pentagon fan, I want Pentagon to be out there doing stuff -- as I imagine a lot of other Universe do. So I -- and I think other Universe -- actively want Hui to NOT be in Bepler. Meanwhile, think about those who are not Pentagon fans. They probably wouldn’t support Hui in the first place, unless they just happen to really like him on the show. So, neither Pentagon fans/Universe nor Pentagon non-fans are likely to want Hui in the top 9, so... who will be voting for him, exactly?
And that is the Pentagon Paradox.
Huta asks Hui to say a few words, and he says: “As I joined Boys Planet, I could feel what it means to enjoy the stage after a long time. Since I was able to perform with very talented chingoos, I was so honored. It’ll be a performance that I’ll remember forever.” Then he makes a big heart with his arms, as his lips smile but the rest of his face doesn’t.
(Chingoo means “someone the same age as you”/”friend” but can also be roughly translated to “guys” -- you’ll often hear the judges call the trainees “chingoo”.)
Tumblr media
I mean, it was pretty classy of him to focus on how much he enjoyed performing with the guys, but why not thank the Star Creators who voted for him as well? That seems mandatory, to me anyway.
Now it’s time to find out who came in 9th and who came in 10th between Jun Hyeon and Gunwook. We find out that apparently the two of them have been friends since the start -- I wonder how many other friendships we have no clue about? They’re both in the same Artist Battle song -- En Garde -- and are apparently currently roommates.
Tumblr media
They’re also sort of friendly rivals.
We see that they’re both trying to cast a spell to be chosen ninth -- well, you gotta do something with your brain while you stand there endlessly waiting for the producers to let Huta announce 9th place. After like full on 5 minutes of dicking around, at 2:19:27 we find out that Gunwook is in 9th place. Kum jokes that he’s not going to say congratulations, but you can tell he doesn’t mean that too seriously.
Gunwook says: “I couldn’t get rid of the 10th place tag. I felt the wall of Top 9 was too high for me. I was able to grow after meeting Team Tomboy. Thank you.” Also no thanks to the Star Creators? I don’t know, feels wrong to me.
Then my little cousin says: “I thought that I should not regret whatever rank I got. I don’t have any regrets because my ranking has risen much more than I thought. I was able to improve from my Ggang performance, so I’m thankful to my team members.” Then he pauses, and says with a slightly thicker throat, “The last chingoo from my agency, Woo Jin, is here” -- and he gestures to Woojin, who was ranked 50th in the 6th episode and who was in Man in Love. We can see that, for one of the first times in Jun Hyeon’s whole life, his eyes have tears in them.
Tumblr media
Somehow, that gets to me more than it does to see someone who is always openly emotional.  “I… I hope I get good results and I can be a hyung who Woo Jin can be proud of,” he says. Then, gathering himself together, he shouts, “Woojin, I love you!”
Tumblr media
Honestly, that’s why I watch this show. FRIENDSHIP! Fuck yeah!
I just noticed that we didn’t see Park Gunwook say anything to Park Hyunbeen, the last survivor from his Jellyfish team. Well, maybe it was edited out.
The trainees take their spots, and the rest of team Tomboy is happy to see Gunwook take a seat on one of the comfy chairs. But Gunwook doesn’t look super happy.
Tumblr media
Next is 8th place, and Wumuti says to Keita, “I hope you don’t get called.” It’s so weird how for the first two hours, the trainees were both hoping to be called, and now they’re all hoping not to be called.
Our clue is that whoever it is, he placed first in his team. Well, that means it’s Zhang Hao, Kim Gyuvin, Kim TaeRae, or Keita. It’s also someone who has had a killing part, which means it’s either Keita or TaeRae.
At 2:23:12, we find out it’s Keita. TaeRae’s teammates from Man in Love are like, “wow, how far are you going to go?”
Huta says, as Keita takes the stage, “Trainee Keita, the master of the stage, showed perfect rap that’s close to a perfect god through Zoom performance and secured his top 9 place.”
Tumblr media
Keita says, “Thank you so much to Star Creators for letting me sit in the Rank 8 seat again. I’ll prove why I have to stay in the Top 9.” His former teammates are happy for him, as is Park Gunwook, who leans over to shake his hand with a look of real happiness on his face. (I couldn’t find a still of when they were both in focus, so enjoy my delightful non-photoshop job here.) Aww, Gunwook has the cutest puppy face smile sometimes, I swear. I think he could pull of cute concepts really well.
Tumblr media
Next, is the trainee in 7th place. It’s someone in the K-group, so it’s not Hao or Matthew. We don’t wait too long to find out, at 2:24:40, that it’s Kim TaeRae 💖.  Naturally, he would have wanted to go even higher, but 7th place is already plenty good enough.
Kim TaeRae appreciation photoset:
Tumblr media
Then we get to listen to his nice speaking voice as he says, “I’m truly thankful to Star Creators for giving me a great ranking of 7th place. I’ll return the favor with better songs and more confident performances. Thank you.” But as he settles down in the squishy 7th place chair, it’s clear that he’s a bit anxious and uncomfortable.
Just for fun, I’m going to measure the time between when they show the rank number on the jumbo tron and when they finally reveal who has that position.
Now it’s time for 6th place. Will it be Han Yu Jin, Kim Gyu Vin, Kim Ji Woong, Seok Matthew, Sung Hanbin, or Zhang Hao? The stakes have never been lower!
We get the clue that the person in 6th got the benefit from the Dual Position Battle, which means it’s literally any of them, because they were all on either Law, Love Killa, or Tomboy.
Then Huta says something that Viki translates as, “He has a unique face and is praised for his good looking.” So again, it’s all of them!
At 2:26:47, after 80 seconds, we find out it’s Kim Gyuvin. He’s a little sad, because he wanted to go even higher, but he did get more than 5 million points.
Huta, reading directly from a cue card, asks him if he only did Love Killa for several years. Sigh, ok, fine, I guess this is a runner. Then Huta says something that Viki translates as, “Please tell us any memorable remarks on survival,” which I think is hilarious.
Gyuvin says, “Thank you for making me win first place in Love Killa. Seo Won, Matthew, and Ji Woong, thank you.” Then he adds in slow, but well-pronounced English, “And thank you for all the support and love. Whatever happens to me, I’m always able to stand strong because of you. Thank you, and I love you.”
When Gyuvin switches to English, Kim JiWoong asks Matthew if Gyubin is doing a good job, and Matthew confirms that he is. “Why didn’t you smile when I speak English?” JiWoong asks, and Matthew says, “Gyuvin is speaking well.” They seem to have a cute report.
Side note: I watched some dumb Youtube video in which someone ranted about their Boys Planet opinions. I say it was dumb because while I don't mind someone disagreeing with me on who they like or dislike, I do mind someone saying something like “Gyuvin needs to get out of Top9 right now,” while refusing to even explain why. And a bunch of people in the comments agreed, but no one had any substantive reason why. What on earth did Gyuvin do to you, people? He’s been a great performer since the Star Level Test. He’s the only one on Love Killa who managed to fucking SMILE the entire performance. He seems like a sweet kid with a nice face and great performance skills whose confidence has really been shaken by these psychopath judges. You can like other trainees better, but it’s weird to just hate Gyuvin. It’s like, these people just hate him because he gets in the way of their ships, or something. Ick.
Next will be the fifth place trainee. Will it be Han Yu Jin, Kim Ji Woong, Seok Matthew, Sung Hanbin, or Zhang Hao? And why does MNET think I care all that much of the specific order amongst these five? If I weren’t recapping this, I’d just skip ahead.
Zhang Hao is getting nervous, so Hanbin takes his hand. That faint noise you just heard in the distance is a shipper squealing. Maybe it was a noise that you made. I don’t know your life.
Huta says that the trainee in 5th place is unexpected. Hey, Huta, you said that about 20th place, and the person turned out the be the person who was in 21st place previously, so I don't trust that comment at all. Then we learn that it’s someone whose ranking has fallen since the first ranking announcement, so it’s it’s not Zhang Hao, who was 5th place before already. It’s also someone who didn’t do the Vocal and Rap position in the Dual Position Battle, so it’s not Hanbin.
Which of these three is it?
Tumblr media
I am on the edge of my seat!
Wait, hang on, let me sit back -- I have plenty of room. That’s better.*
At 2:29:35, after 80 seconds of waiting, we find out it’s Kim Ji Woong, who has dropped a bit in the ranking.
People are surprised that his ranking fell, but I’m not really that surprised. Kim JiWoong was sort of subdued and depressed seeming through most of episodes 6-7. There seemed to be some sort of heavy dark cloud hanging over his whole team, and while I think that this cloud may have condensed from evaporating drops of Matthew's flop sweat, the net outcome was a sad sad sad JiWoong. It wasn't a cute look -- people like smiling idols. Also, it seems increasingly clear that JiWoong is sort of a weirdo. He makes weird jokes, he has weird takes on things, he is comfortable with things that make other people uncomfortable, he's just an oddball. Personally, that makes me like him a lot more, but I don't know if most people are like me on that.
*That was an old MST3K joke, but it really fit here.
See, to my point about him being kind of a weirdo, when asked to say a few words, Kim Ji Woong says: “Besides rankings, I think the most important thing is an unbreakable heart. If Star Creators keep watering, I will bloom a huge flower. Thank you.”
Tumblr media
You guys, JiWoong is a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a fitted suit wrapped in other people’s sweat. Does he know how sexual this sounds? Is this all an accident? There's no way to know, but I love it.
Then Huta says that he’ll announce that the top four, and even though it couldn’t possibly be more obvious that it’s Matthew, Hanbin, Hao, and Yujin, we still have to wait fully 45 seconds for them to actually tell us.
The fourth place trainee actually came in first place in 70 countries, including the US, France, Italy, and Switzerland. At 2:32:47 we find out it’s Matthew, who has fallen two spots. And for the record, he still would have been in 4th place without all the benefits.
In fact, the only differences in ranking caused by the benefit at all is that (a) the formerly blue haired Park Hanbin, currently 13th, and Ricky, currently 14th, would be in the opposite order without the benefit and (b) Na Kamden, currently 20th, and that peach Lee Seunghwan, currently 21st, would be in the opposite order without the benefit. So… not that important, really.
Back to Matthew. Again, I’m really not surprised that his rank has fallen. As I hinted at earlier, his leadership of the Love Killa team was low key a disaster. He came across as officious and anxious, like a yippy chihauhua. I'm not trying to be mean, because I empathize. I'm a teacher -- as I've said before, I don't teach at a school and I work with all age groups, from little kids to adults who are my parents' age -- and I know how it feels to try to lead people from a place of anxiety. People smell it on you and don't like it. It makes them feel anxious, too. They push back more. And then it makes the leader even more anxious, which creates a feedback loop. The only way to get out of it is to take deep breaths and try to relax control a little. Give the conversational ball back to the students. Ask more questions, and accept more answers. But I'm not sure that Matthew ever figured out what had actually gone wrong with his leadership, and we get a sense in the beginning of this episode that he still has a lot to figure out about how teams and leadership work.
I guess I've digressed a bit, but the point I want to make is that Matthew showed a somewhat unlikable side to himself in episodes 6-7. And then his performance in Love Killa was nothing to write home about, since he was not a good fit for the song concept (as he himself seemed to realize later). I think it's not too late for him to right the ship, but I also think that the show's editors may have turned against him, and I'm not totally sure that he's a lock for Top9 anymore.
Anyway, for his speech, Matthew says, “I’m so thankful that I’m still in Top9. Star Creators, since you send me support and love, I’m becoming a stronger and happier Matthew.” Then he does that dumb little motto thing again and in the future, when he does that, these recaps will not mention it.
Tumblr media
Now it’s time for third place. The trainee was number one in China, which makes everyone think it’s probably Hao, but apparently Yujin is also really popular in China, and without much ado, we find out that it is in fact Han Yujin.
I love Park JiHoo in the peanut gallery saying, “So Hao-hyung will be 2nd place?” because it’s so obvious who first place will be.
Han Yujin’s voice is surprisingly deep, considering his young age. He says, “While watching survival programs since I was young” -- you are currently young, my friend -- I thought about how I’d feel if I sat in such a high place. I can’t believe this, and I’m so, so happy now. I’ll work harder to be a person who deserves this high place.”
Tumblr media
Then Huta teases him into doing his "thigh grab" move from Law again and we see several instant replays.
Tumblr media
Han Yujin is 15 ½ in international age. He’s only a few months older than Takuto. Ewwww.
Hey, psychopath child who told me to k!ll myse!f for “sexualizing” legal adult Park Gunwook, are you writing letters to MNET about this shit? Maybe you should be. Get your misdirected rage out that way, maybe.
So, Yujin takes his seat, and now we’ll spend almost seven minutes wasting time before we find out who came in first and who came in second, as if we don’t already know. But there was NO TIME to hear what Ricky, Chen Kuan Jui, or Zhang Shuai Bo had to say when they got their ranking, right?
Huta begins by commenting on Hanbin and Hao’s chemistry, and then we’re reminded that they were the two centers for Na Bina.  We see Matthew with a slightly weird expression.
Tumblr media
He almost looks angry. But who knows, maybe he's just trying not to sneeze.
Then Huta asks them things like “How do you feel about being a candidate for number one?” and “Do you think you can be number one?” They say the exact same stuff you’d expect them to say. Seriously, take a moment, imagine what you'd think they'd say. You got it right. That's what they said.
Tumblr media
The only thing that’s at least slightly interesting is when Huta asks Hao if he has anything to say to Hanbin, and Hao says, "Let's debut and drink zero cola every day." Also, we find out that Number 1 has 914,268 more points than number 2, which makes it even less likely that it’s not Hanbin.
So after all that, we find out the first place is, of course, Hanbin again.
Tumblr media
Hanbin pouts, which is a choice. I guess he feels a little uncomfortable with it--?  Hao doesn't even react because he already knew.
The trainees all say “as expected” and that Hanbin is really named “Han Bina” (like Na Bina, I’m Shining). Hanbin and Hao embrace as the void itself closes in on them.
Tumblr media
Somehow they escape the void, and then we get to hear from each of them.
Hanbin says: “I gained strength from many people who supported me. Thanks to them, I'm spending a meaningful and memorable day every day. Team Love Me Right, including [Han] Seo Bin who I really miss, and team Tomboy that brought me luck. And not everyone is here but while watching the passion of 98 trainees in Boys Planet, I think I've grown up more. I'll continue to try hard, rather than just stay in the same place. I'll keep the number one place to the end." Then, he switches to Chinese, and while Hao rubs his back and various Chinese trainees smile, he says, " I think I'm getting better because of you. Thank you, Star Creators."
(In case you forgot who Han Seo Bin is, he's Park JiHoo's friend, the rapper kid who Hui chose to be on Love Me Right. )
Zhang Hao says, “Hello, I'm trainee Zhang Hao. Today's Zhang Hao isn't perfect yet. But I will try my best and make a performance that exceeds your expectations. I'll prove that you are right to like Trainee Zhang Hao." Then Zhang Hao switches to Japanese and Zhang Hao says, “Thank you for supporting me. You're my strong supporter. I will do my best to be your pride." Thank you, Zhang Hao for giving that speech about Zhang Hao!
My theory is that Gyuvin, Hanbin, and Hao were talking in their Love Killa group about how to get more support from areas where they're less popular. Gyuvin targeted the international market in general, Hanbin targeted China, and Hao targeted Japan.
So, now that we've found out who is ranked 1-27, only one chair remains...
The final spot: 28th place
At 2:42:50 it's time to find out the last trainee who survived elimination in rank 28. Who are the candidates?
Sung Hanbin, Kim Gyuvin, Keita, and Tumblr user Boys Planet Recaps are all hoping it's Lee Yedam. Thanks, MNET, for first screwing him over by not showing his audition in episode 2, and then turning the screws now, just letting us all know that the highest ranked trainees all respect the shit out of him but that we’re going to lose him from the show.
Tumblr media
Anyway, we find out our three “candidates”, ie those ranked 28, 29 and 30 in some order, are..
Tumblr media
Mun Jung Hyeon, Hiroto, and Ma Jing Xiang.
And then we find out that 30th place is…
Tumblr media
Ma Jing Xiang. Oh Sungmin is shocked.
He bows politely, and trainees call out encouragement. Huta says that MJX has “shown passionate drive all this time”, and that is a nice way to put it.
MJX seems to be ok -- he’s got to be at least slightly relieved to be able to get away from this stressful environment. He says, “Actually, I don’t have any regrets, because many Star Creators have voted for me and cheered me on. So it’s so heartwarming for me. I love you all.” Aww, that’s nice! I wish more trainees would focus on that -- yeah, you may have lost, but look at the hundreds of thousands of votes you got!
Now it’s down to Mun Jung Hyeon, who I’ve liked ever since his performance in The Real for the Star Level Test, and Hiroto, who I don’t feel like I know very well, and who has never like, blown me away with his performance. So, obviously I’m hoping for Mun. But at the same time, we only have three Japanese trainees in the top 27 -- Keita, Haruto, and Takuto. (What is with all the Japanese trainees going just be their personal name? Did MNET make them do that?) So it would be good to have another Japanese trainee around, just to make this not so much of a K-fest. And I know a lot of people really like Hiroto, so it’d be nice to get to know him better.
We scan the audience, and oh, Mun’s label mate and hyung, TaeRae, is crying a little, while his other hyung, Park Hanbin, has his hands lifted in prayer. We know that Takuto is hoping desperately for Hiroto-kun. And Huta tells us that the difference between the two is only 60,510 points -- oh, ouch!!
Tumblr media
And at 2:47:35, we find out that….
Haruto has survived, and Mun is out.
The two of them hug. Kim Tae Rae covers his eyes with his hands.
Haruto says, in Korean, “I am so fascinated by everything that’s happening. I can’t tell whether this is a dream or reality. But I’ll do my best going forward to return the favor. Thank you.” Aww, he probably prepared that speech. Then pretty much all the trainees come running over to hug him, including a sobbing Takuto.
Then Huta says, “Trainee Mun Jung Hyun has to leave Boys Planet at Number 29 for the difference in one ranking.” Nice! What a great comment to make! So helpful.
TaeRae is really crying now, so Mun calls out “Uljima!!!” (Don’t cry!) But he’s low key saying it to himself. He goes on, “Up until Hiroto’s name was announced, I wished that I could leave after performing in the last stage.” (He means the Artist Mission.) “I’m very disappointed, but I’m sure Hiroto will perform very well in my place. … I didn’t want to make you cry!” he adds, as many trainees do, in fact, cry. “Thank you for everything, and especially, to the Star Creators who enabled me to perform twice already, I want to sincerely thank you. Thank you!”
And that’s the end of the second elimination. We pan slowly over the remaining trainees…
Tumblr media
…and Brian is just a study in misery. Ji Yun Seo, who is actually two years younger than Brian, looks at his fellow Yuehua trainee with concern. YunSeo is such a papa bear type for someone so young, isn’t he?
Huta says some stuff about how they did a good job and will be remembered forever, but a tear is rolling down Cai Jin Xin’s face. Awww, he’s not really that good at anything but I’m fond of him. He seems like a real nice guy. Not a Nice Guy, but a guy who is nice. You know what I mean.
Then Huta congratulates the trainees who have made the cut, but warns them that they’re still not safe. To the Star Creators, he says, “For the boys who are desperately awaiting your love and cheer, we would be grateful if you would give them your precious one vote.” Park JiHoo looks dead to the camera and mimicks tapping on a phone. I love that kid.
Tumblr media
And Dang Hong Hai says that’ll be voting. Yeah, DHH! He’s staying classy. I love it.
The voting opens! From now on, we can pick three boys only. Oh no, my heart is already broken.
But that’s about it for this episode, and this post!
In my next post, I’ll list the order I found online for the rankings 29 to 51, and give you my thoughts/ideas on what might happen next for the trainees who were eliminated. Then in another post I’ll address the five Artist Mission songs/groups, and what happened for that first hour of Ep 8, along with some thoughts on those videos they released.
Thanks as always for reading! If you're enjoying the recaps, please consider sharing them in non-Tumblr spaces because it'd be cool to get the word out and help people who like this kind of recap find me!
See you next time. <3

Boys Planet Episode 2, Recap Part 1
Tumblr media
In this watch-along-if-you-want-to recap, I’ll cover Episode 2 of the popular MNET show, complete with my usual screen grabs, gifs, helpful information, and snark. Let’s get to it!
A few quick notes -- ages given are international ages; ranks given are as of the end of ep 1/ beginning of ep 2; when I say "Space Council" I mean the other trainees watching the audition.
If you want to skip past the teaser, go to 1:14.
The boys have gathered in an auditorium to watch the first episode. And who is that coming in but Sunmi, who I would basically summarize as a performance artist at this point. Man, I love her.
Tumblr media
Haruto asks her where she’ll be sitting, and all the boys strongly suggest she sit by them. She puts a chair in the middle of the aisle, so she’s in between pretty-boy waacker Sung Hanbin and charming Canadian Seok Matthew, and she makes this face for some reason.
Tumblr media
And then they start playing the episode.
The boys enjoy each other’s trash talk, especially Yoon Jong Woo’s comment that G Group can’t win because “our roots are different.” (We’ll be seeing more of Jong Woo very shortly, trust). I feel like maybe this comment loses something in translation, because everyone reacts like it’s the quip of the century. Jong Woo is clearly a “personality” and is most likely here more to jumpstart a career on Youtube or something -- at least, that’s my take.
Everyone dies of laughter at the My House performances, and Sunmi can’t even stay in her seat. There’s also a lot of laughter at Team Hot’s performance (in the red leather jackets). Everyone’ shaving fun but I mean, oh boy, this is going to follow them around for the rest of their lives. I hope they can… deal with it.
Then the ranking is revealed.
Tumblr media
Someone had to be 93rd, and it’s 18-year-old Japanese trainee Riku. He interviews in Japanese that he was shocked and disappointed.
Tumblr media
Sung Han Bin, who performed Beautiful Beautiful at the end of last episode, is crowned first place winner, and Hui, who is sitting next to him, congratulates him sincerely. This would have bene several weeks into filming so Hui and Hanbin could have gotten close in the last few weeks, but maybe they really did know each other from Cube.  Hanbin is overjoyed at his ranking.
If you’re curious, according to my spreadsheet, the average ranking of the G-group trainees is 52.8, while the average ranking of the K-group trainees is 41.0, which is a pretty stark difference. Of the top 10, only two are G-group; of the top 20, only 7 are G-group. Of the bottom 20 (74 to 93), only 6 are K-group. This despite the fact that we saw more auditions from G-group trainees in episode 1. You’re going to get some of that when they weight the votes the way they do, but hey, it’s their country, it’s their show, it’s their prerogative.
More stuff about how to vote. Feel free to skip to 7:57 for the episode to really start.
Time for more auditions!
Team Redstart ENM
The four Redstart trainees come out, covered in a total of 37 star stickers. So, I guess they’re confident.
Tumblr media
I had never heard of Redstart ENM, so I looked them up. They don’t have any acts signed to them that I can find evidence of. This agency seems to exist only to promote these four trainees.
Choi Woo Jin is 18 years old and ranked 41 as of the beginning of this episode.
Hong Keon Hee is 18 years old and ranked 87 as of the beginning of this episode.
Kim Min Seoung is 19 years old and ranked 78 as of the beginning of this episode. He was on another show called Loud.
Kum Jun Hyeon is 19 years old and ranked 31 as of the beginning of this episode. (31)
The judges joke about how Kum Jun Hyeon’s loose baggy pants are very hiphop, and then they dive into their performance of Jessi’s Nunu Nana, which, as always, I watched the full cam of on Youtube before I exposed myself to MNET editing.
My take:
This was a brilliant choice of song. It was a huge hit -- 200 million views on Youtube -- and it was originally performed by a woman, so there’s that slight thrill of gender flipping it. It’s primarily a rap song, which suits their skillset, with rather minimal choreography that gave them almost a blank slate to embroider on to make this performance their own.
Their dancing and performance (as in, stage presence, charisma, that kind of thing) were both excellent, for all four of them. Watch their footwork, their angles, their consistent facial expressions even when they’re not vocalizing. They’re powerful yet controlled. And Min Seoung did that killer flip. (I love the loud appreciative wooooah from the Space Council you can hear clearly when he flips.) Both Min Seoung and Jun Hyeon had decent enough vocals that they could be a main dancer in an idol group, though I don’t really love Min Seoung's rapping vocals. He wasn’t bad or anything, I just didn’t love the sound. I liked Keon Hee’s natural deep vocal tone when he rapped, but his singing was a bit off key. Woo Jin’s vocals were shakier, both in rapping and singing. I think I’d give Jun Hyeon and Min Seoung higher scores over all -- either give them both a 3 and the others a 2, or give them both a 4 and the others a 3.
The MNET editing makes the performance look even better -- they might have brushed up Jun Hyeon’s vocals a little, but I’m not sure. We get to see Min Seoung’s flip three times, and there aren’t any shots of the vocal judges making that sour face they make.
The Space Council thinks they did great and might all get four stars.
Omigod, I’m in tune with the judges for once.
Keon Hee 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐
Woo Jin 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐
Jun Hyeon 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐
Min Seoung 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Hang on, let me just double check that it’s not raining frogs or anything…. Nope, it’s just a normal day in our climate hell. I am just somehow agreeing with the judges!
Jun Hyeon is really happy to get 4 stars.
Tumblr media
Jun Hyeon has a lot of personality, folks. He reminds me of one of my younger cousins, so I find him irritatingly endearing, if that makes any sense. I just want to tell him to shut up, but in a nice way, you know?
11:50 Tall and Short Teams Perform Conduct Zero and Reveal
Back stage, two teams are waiting -- a team from China who are very tall, and a team from Japan who are kind of short. They great each other in Korean.
Tumblr media
The Chinese trainees interview (in Korean) that the Japanese trainees are cute, and call them “dongsaes” -- the Korean word for a younger sibling/friend. Snarkily, the show tells us that the Japanese trainees are actually older by a few years. A little number floats over the trainees heads, saying that Hiroto, Keita and Ma Jing Xiaoh are 22, 23, and 20 respectively.
Tumblr media
(I love the constant look of bewilderment on Jing Xiao’s face throughout this encounter. He must have been really nervous to perform, but it almost looks like he’s confused as to who these hobbits are.)
Jing Xiao is 19 in the international system, so that checks out. What’s weird is, I have Hiroto’s and Keita’s ages as 20 and 21 in the international system, which would make them 21 and 22 in the Korean system…? I used their birthdates and an online birthday → age now calculator because I was too lazy to do all that math. Anyway, must be something I don’t really understand about the Korean age system. That’s why I just use the international system in these recaps.
Anyway, no one cares. Let’s watch the Osaka team perform!
Conduct Zero
Tumblr media
Yuto is 18 and, if you’re wondering, 5’7. He’s ranked 69 right now, and is the only member of his team to give himself a confidence ranking of 3 stars instead of 4.
Kei is just 16, is also 5’7, and is a member of a “dance and vocal unit” called Edamame Beans, a subunit of EBiDAN, which seems to be some sort of AKB48 style giant “music collective” under Stardust Promotion. I don’t know much about it, but there you go. He’s in a dance position in that group. He’s ranked 76 right now.
Hiroto, not to be confused with all-star Haruto, is 20, was on Produce 101 Japan, and is signed under RBW and is on their pre-debut team. (RBW is the agency home of Mamamoo, Oneus, Onewe, and Purple Kiss.) Probably from all his pre-show exposure, and his cute face, he’s ranked 11 as of right now.
Keita is 21, a former YG Treasure Box contestant, and is a member of idol group Ciipher. He’s ranked 14 right now.
So yeah, the team comes out and Keita introduces them as “charming as takoyaki,” which Wikipedia tells me is a “Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special molded pan”, filled with diced octopus, and that it originated in Osaka.
Tumblr media
Oh man. That does look charming, now you mention it.
The judges talk to Keita about how long he’s been a trainee - 9 years - and how he is a debuted member of Ciipher. We have a sad piano segment about how hard it’s been for Keita, that debuting in Ciipher didn’t solve all his problems.
I didn’t know much about Ciipher, so I looked into them. They have three title track MVs, with 3-11 million views each. I liked “Blind” best, easily -- I added it to my playlist, let’s see how long it stays there. I don’t know, they have their charms -- I hope they find a song that really breaks through.
Everyone assumes they’ll do a cute song because they’re all “cute” and short (they’re all around 5’7, as far as I can tell, which isn’t THAT short but whatever). It seems obvious to me that they won’t do a cute song dressed in all black, and of course, they don’t.
After encouraging each other with pats on the back -- very “got your back” before an improv show vibe -- and to the shouts of “ganbare!” from the Space Council (ganbare/ganbatte = fighting!) they dive into Conduct Zero, a 2015 release from Block B’s subunit called Bastarz.
My take on their performance:
Overall, an enjoyable watch.
All four of them danced pretty decently in my opinion. Yuto and Hiroto didn’t have quite enough power, while Kei was maybe too powerful, needing to relax a little more. Keita struck the right balance between giving the moves power while still seeming relaxed in his performance.
Vocal wise, they were all fairly decent too. Yuto’s vocals were the shakiest,  but not by a lot. Keita’s rapping stood out -- good breath control, specific tone, all that good stuff. He also put some expression into it.
I would give Keita four stars, and the others 2 or 3 -- leaning more toward 3 for Kei for his strong dancing. I think it’s better to overdance than underdance.
The MNET editing is, if anything, kind, but it really looks like it’s the Keita-and-friends show.  The judging seems to be just about Keita, too. They say the “K” in Keita must stand for K-pop. Lip J, addressing him as Keita-san, tells him he got 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐. The others get 2 stars  ⭐⭐, which I guess is pretty fair. They seem happy with that.
At 17:05, the tall Shanghai team comes out in slow motion, and everyone freaks the absolute fuck out. Like they’ve never seen such tall, handsome people in their lives.
But the guys stand on stage in fig leaf position, clearly nervous.
Tumblr media
Here’s some info on them, including their heights since the show is obsessed:
Ma Jing Xiang is 19 years old and currently ranked 16th, and he’s 6’2. He’s a member of a predebut team called Midsummer Cubs, which is one of my favorite names for anything ever. Per kpop fandom wiki, “His specialty includes model walking and posing.”
Cai Jin Xin  is also 19 and currently ranked 42nd. He’s also 6’2. He claims to be good at “mind controlling.”
Zhang Shuai Bo is 20, 6’1, and ranked 22nd. He was also on Youth With You 3, but eliminated in 100th place (out of 119). Oh noooooo.
*Tao Yuan* is 23, 6’0, and has already left the show. I couldn’t find a reason why, but it has been mentioned that he’s going to debut as a member of a group called XODIAC, so maybe that’s it.
Everyone absolutely loses their shit about how handsome Jing Xiang is, which again reminds me that I am not always in tune with who is and who isn’t considered handsome on shows like that. Please understand, I’m not calling him ugly or anything, not at all. I’m just saying that if you were to ask me to pick out the most handsome guy on this whole show, it wouldn’t be him.
They look great just standing there…. But then they start performing.
My take:
Yeah, this isn’t good.
It’s tough to tell whether they’re all equally bad or if some might be better than others. For example, right at the start, Tao Yuan in the white fringed shirt does a movement about a full second after the others, which makes you not sure at first, were the others early or was he late, or both? And when many of the members are that far off key, it’s hard to tell if maybe some of the others might be on key, because your ear loses where the key should be. Also, if you’re on a team with people singing off key, it’s likely to throw you off key too. I feel like maybe Zhang Shuai Bo did a little better than the others, singing wise, but I really can’t be sure. I don’t have the energy to watch this performance any more times than I already have, so I’ll say that I’d give Shuai Bo 1 star and the rest no stars.
MNET editing could have been a lot worse. The Space Council think the team members look good with their long limbs, and credit is given for them attempting the song in its original key, but a series of bad notes makes the vocal judge make this face:
Tumblr media
In the MNET editing, they end to complete silence, but of course, in real life the trainees in the Space Council cheered for them when they were done. (You hear it in the Youtube full cam video.)
The dance judge, who choreographed this song in the first place, wants to say nice things about the performance because he likes his own choreography. He says he enjoyed watching their performance, which makes Shuai Bo smile so happily.
Tumblr media
Aww, my heart. He wasn’t expecting a single word of praise, you can just tell.
But the good times can’t last. The vocal judge says they were completely out of tune the whole time.
Ma Jing Xiang gets 2 stars⭐⭐, I assume for his handsomeness, because I see literally no other reason.
Cai Jin Xin with the mesh sleeves gets 0 stars.
Zhang Shuai Bo gets 1 star ⭐.
*Tao Yuan* gets 1 star ⭐.
For once, the judges were kinder than I was.
20:23 Uncomfortable Sexy Times
At 20:23, there is a break during which the trainees and the judges pose for the cameras and try to look sexy. Then Kim Ji Woong shows up on camera and everyone says “woah!” at his expression,
Tumblr media
but this is his constant facial expression. He’s not doing anything. He just always has that same, slightly confused look on his face. It might all be an act -- impossible to say.
Then there’s this strange segment in which Ji Woong’s neighbor and teammate, Yoon Jong Woo, pretends to kiss / actually kisses Ji Woong on the lips, interviewing that his heart was fluttering, yadda yadda. Ji Woong seems completely unbothered either way by this, and then they both admit it was just a show, something fun for the audience. So like, full on queerbaiting? Several trainees interview about how handsome Ji Woong is. Anyway feel free to skip to..
0:23:15 Mirotic
The judges tease Ji Woong about how he isn’t wearing a shirt under his suit jacket, then grill him about his acting career. And yeah, it seems that yeah, this was just a queer-baity act, because Ji Woong has thus far only appeared in BL (“boy love”) genre dramas, including one called “Kissable Lips” and another one called “Roomates of Poonduck 304.” (Those NAMES!) So it seems his whole team is doing a sort of sexy BL concept for their performance of Mirotic.
I don’t know much about this topic, but my impression is that once you’re in BL genre dramas, you kind of are stuck there. I do know that there is at least one Kpop group with a BL concept -- OnlyOneOf. They have really good music, as it happens, and I’m holding back from ranting about how much I loved their series of solo songs that they put out over the second half of 2022. From what I’ve seen, the gay community has embraced OnlyOneOf not as queer baiters but as representation for an underrepresented group. It feels fetishy to me, and inauthentic, but for a country with so much out-and-out homophobia, I guess it’s a step in the right direction…? I defer to any gay/queer/etc folk to weigh in on this, as it’s not really my place.
Ji Woong seems to live his life in a daze, just sort of accepting the fact that everyone who sees him, male and female alike, wants to fuck him. It’s just the background noise of his life. But he really loves singing and dancing (and maybe he wants to get out of the BL rut? No way to know) so he saw Boys Planet as a great opportunity.
Anyway, the performance.
It’s hard to separate the performance from their concept, which is, “What if Mirotic, but gay?” I wouldn’t mind that at all if it weren’t so fake and fetishy. It’s just as fake and fetishy as Madonna kissing Britney Spears at the MTV Music Awards 100 years ago. I have to remind myself that this might actually be representation for young gay folk in Korea, and maybe that makes it good…? Overall, it’s a decent performance, with 3+ star dancing, 2+ star vocals, and varied performance.
Tumblr media
*Jung Hwan Rok* has already dropped out of the show, perhaps to return to his group, withus. (Judges gave him 2 stars.)
Jeong I Chan age 21, ranked 52. He used to be known as Jeong Jaebeom when he was on the show I-Land (that produced Enhypen); he  spent most of his time on I-Land in the “Ground” team (low ranked) and was eliminated at the end of the first half. He has legally changed his name to 정이찬 Jung “Ee” Chan; he seems to want to go by “E-chan” now, but the show seems to spell it I-chan. I’m kind of surprised at his low rank, as I thought he had a fan base. On the other hand, oof. These vocals. He was about a full half-tone sharp right out the gate, and I think it threw off his whole team. Not great. I also got the impression he was uncomfortable with the concept. Maybe I’m wrong.
The judges give him 2 stars ⭐⭐, which seems fair.
Kim Ji Woong is ranked 2nd; he’s 24 years old.
He has a kind of surprisingly interesting vocal color, actually, and overall was a lot better than I’d feared he would be. He looks good dancing -- elegant, even. I was surprised, really. The judges give him 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐, which I actually think is pretty fair.
(Side note: you can’t hear the rose crumble in the youtube version; that was definitely the foley artist. For once, they got to add a sound effect other than the “gulp” noise!)
Lee Seung Hwan is 22 years old and ranked 13. He has really made the rounds of reality shows and whatnot. He was on Under19 and finished in 8th place, so he debuted as a member of project group 1THE9. When that group disbanded, he went on the show LOUD, where he was eliminated in the first round. He apparently was a backup dancer for Oneus during their US tour, so he must have some dancing chops.
And he does! But his performance style is a little flat, somehow, like unexciting, so I understand how he’d make a great backup dancer. He is the one who hits that high note (”yeahhhhh!”), and it sounded pretty good until he cracked. He didn’t let it show on his face either, so I give him that. They’re tired, IDK. I think he did fine, just not special. But I bet he’ll do well on the show, because he probably can pick up choreography quickly if he worked as a backup dancer.
The judges give him 2 stars ⭐⭐, which seems slightly low but not wildly so.
Yoon Jong Woo is 22 and currently ranked 73. He is listed as a rapper and was “Ze:U” in the very short lived idol group Black Level, whose debut single was called Infection. Really? Infection? In 2022? Read the room, folks. I mean, it’s like every mid-tempo kpop boy band song got thrown in a blender with one or two trop-house songs and then poured onto a pile of monochrome outfits. Not the fault of the trainees or anything.
His performance is fine -- he’s committed to the theme, I’ll say that. He does more rapping than singing, and both are fine. The judges praise him for dropping an octave at one point, and give him 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐, and that’s fine.
The MNET editing focuses on how sexy it is and how it makes everyone a combination of turned on and uncomfortable, apparently. The main vocal judge says repeatedly that it made him really uncomfortable. “I’ve never watched a boy group perform and feel strange like this,” he says. “This was a valuable first experience.”
28:21 Takuto Time
Honestly, I’m watching this so you don’t have to. Takuto comes out, makes big hearts with his arms, and everyone talks about how cute and young he is but how kind of weird he is for making hearts all the time.
My favorite moment is when he gives his age and the far more mature looking/behaving Han Yu Jin turns to his teammate and says, “He’s the same age as me.” I mean, Yu Jin is 15 and acts 25; Takuto is 15 and acts like he’s 5. I don’t have a lot of patience for this. Sorry if you like him a lot. He’s doing a thing, and maybe it’s secretly genius and I don’t get it. I know that Korean tolerance for over the top cutseyness seems to be higher than mine.
He does a song that Korean singer/legend Rain did in 2002 called “Instead of Saying Goodbye” (which Rain performed in boxing gloves). I bet it's a sentimental fave, but it's not good. It's like, what if “Party Up (Up In Here)” by DMX had its life and soul sucked out? And then its dry, brittle corpse was filled with stale bubble gum?
Tumblr media
Ah, the very early days of kpop.
Tumblr media
The song has been edited to include the voices of children laughing and saying “who are you?” (in English). It’s very Kidz Bop. He starts off with a random back flip, and then immediately loses his balance and falls when he lands, and that’s about it in terms of skills displayed. I’ll keep my comments short and sweet and say that the judge’s assessment of 0 stars seems very accurate to me, though I’ll add that the MNET editing that makes him seem half-witted is kind of unfair since he obviously just doesn’t speak or understand Korean, no matter how loudly and emphatically Solji speaks into her microphone.
Both “My Housers” feel like they’re welcoming Takuta to their house, as the beginning of that now cursed song begins playing ominously in the background.
Tumblr media
32:40 Replay
The next segment features the two trainees we met at the very beginning of the first episode, who rated themselves with just 1 star. They’re ranked pretty well, though -- all that camera time did them some good, rankings wise.
Lee Da Eul, with the lighter colored hair and light blue jacket, is 18 and ranked 4th.
Lim Jun Seo, with the darker hair and brighter blue jacket, is 17 and ranked 19th.
They are performing Replay, originally by SHINee, which I think is a smart choice for two teenage trainees. It’s one of those songs I never get sick of, even though it was already many years old when I first got into Kpop. They say it’s their first time performing in front of people -- they’ve only trained for a few months.
Tumblr media
As for their performance, It’s the same in the whole video as it is in the editing. They do their little talent show dance, sing semi on key, and are cute and spunky. I didn’t notice one being better than the other. When they’re done, the judges make them freestyle dance. Jun Seo freezes up at first, while Da Eul hams it up, dancing like a class clown trying to get attention. Finally Jun Seo does a summersault. The judges give them both 2 stars⭐⭐, which is obviously too high. They gave Jeon Woo Seok (barefoot Criminal performer) 1 star! Honestly, these judges are just trolling us.
I love these reactions from K-group:
Tumblr media
Top, left to right is Haru ⭐⭐ and Riku⭐, who perform in Maniac. In the second row is Na Kamden’s ⭐⭐⭐ denimed legs, then Jay⭐⭐⭐⭐; those two sang Rush Hour. Then we see tall Ichika⭐, be-hatted Itsuki ⦰, and Ouju⦰, who performed Shine. (We’ll be seeing a lot more of Ouju this episode). Directly under Riku two rows down is Ma Jing Xiang ⭐⭐ in the choker, with a squinting Cai Jin Xin ⦰next to him, and then Zhang Shuai Bo ⭐ -- those three performed in Reveal earlier. You also see a bit of Winnie, the Thai idol.
What I think is funny is their reactions. Yeah, Jay is fine, and Ichika seems like a sweet, classy guy who would clap for anyone. But msot of the rest of them are showing their irriation, disbelief, and annoyance. Yeah, of course, they might just be bummed that the competition to see who can get more stars and thus see the Signal Song a day earlier is very much not going toward the G-group. But they might be extra bummed that the judges are just handing out stars willy-nilly to the Korean trainees.  Were Da Eul and Jun Seo really that much better than Itsuki and Ouju, who got no stars? Were they better than Zhang Shuai Bo, with his hesitantly happy smile, who got 1 star? Were they as good as Haru, who got 2 stars? I don’t know.
So, yeah, the competition between K and G is heating up. Who on EARTH will win? No way to know, even though all along G groups have scored poorly and K groups have scored better. Who will win?
Then we have the briefest clips of multiple auditions, all of which the judges scored poorly:
Maniac, originally by Stray Kids, performed by Haru and Riku
UN Village, originally by Baehyun of EXO, performed by Wumuti
Love Scenario, originally by IKON, performed by Choi Seung Hun and Jeon Ho Young;
Lullaby, originally by GOT7, performed by Jung Ho Jin, Kim Min Hyuk, and Park Gwan Young
I’ll be covering these, and other audition performances that were skipped completely, in a separate post.
35:50 Things Get Real
The five members of Team The Real come out.
Tumblr media
Park Min Seok, age 20, is currently ranked 64th. He says his favorite song is Love Again by Baekhyun. Good choice.
Kim Tae Rae, age 20, is currently ranked 9th. More on him shortly.
Park Han Bin, age 20, is currently ranked 34th. He went on LOUD but was eliminated in the first round. He lists Woodz as someone he looks up to, which is a huge point in his favor.
Lee Jeong Hyeon, age 20, is currently ranked 35th.
Mun Jung Hyun, age 17, is currently ranked 24th. We’ve been seeing him a lot in the Space Council, like when he sat in Chair 1 in episode 1. He’s a former child actor -- he was in four movies between 2012 and 2017 (so when he was aged 5 to 10).
I have to rant a little more about Kim Tae Rae because I love him so much but don’t know why he’s ranked so high. He was on another reality show before, one called Top 10 Student, when he was 18; click here to watch him skillfully sing a boring duet on that show. (He’s on the left.) But I don’t know if that appearance explains his high ranking. Maybe it’s his cute intro video, where he plays the guitar and sings? I don’t think so, because it doesn’t have an unusual amount of views.  Could it really just be that people like his voice? I mean, that would fill me with joy. He’s so good, you guys. I get so happy when someone in Kpop can actually SING. He has a fantastic voice. It’s a tiny bit Baekhyun-esque, a similar vocal color anyway. Now I want to hear him, Baekhyun, and Lee Hwan Hee all sing together in close harmony. Ahhhhh….
Back to the point.
The judges think that Mun Jung Hyun looks like Kang Daniel, and I mean, maybe? The judges tease all the trainees about their relationship with the WakeOne team from G-group (Anthonny, Haruto, and Min, who did Glitch Mode) and Anthonny gives us this angry, eyes-like-daggers look:
Tumblr media
Just so we know that the rivalry runs deep and that they hate each other.
Interestingly, the judges completely fail to mention the other two WakeOne trainees who are going to do Bloom Bloom later on. WakeOne sent 10 trainees in total, which is wild but makes sense -- they manage Kep1er, so obviously have a good relationship with MNET and this franchise. WakeOne also recently took over management of T01 and they manage popular soloist Jo Yuri. I’m excited to see the team they debut out of this!
The judges ask them what is their unique strength, and blue-haired Hanbin replies, “There’s nothing we can’t do.” Out in the Space Council, Anthonny says that they’re good but that they (the G-group trainees) can beat them. And then they start.
My take:
You guys. I LOVED THIS PERFORMANCE. Just watch it on Youtube. The MNET editing is trying to make it look better with all the instant replays and reaction shots, but it is so much better if you just watch it and enjoy it. This is hands down my favorite audition from this round. A lot of the lyrics are “Look at our dance” and they sell that idea to the audience, as a group. If you watch each guys individually, yeah, you notice some little things to improve, but if you watch it just all together, there isn’t an obvious weak link.
Tumblr media
Kim Tae Rae with the light brown hair sang so well. Yeah, he cracks a little on that high note, but he’s a human being and god knows how exhausted they all were. He’s a genuine talent. He also brought a lot of energy and personality and performance to his dancing. He did drop his “face” here and there -- I think he may have been trying to look serious/determined, and it just came across as blank. But these are minor quibbles for the obvious main vocal. I give him 4 stars.
The judges give him 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐, just to make me angry, I guess.
Little Mun Jung Hyun did really well too. MNET didn’t air this part, but he does this cool raspy rapping rap in the middle and pulled it off. Not to mention his “chum deureogayu” (the dance starts now) he does, holding out the finger heart. So fun, so much personality. I did notice that his footwork needs a bit of work -- but from the waist up, he’s doing great. I showed this performance to my fella, and he picked out Mun Jung Hyun as his favorite performer. My fella has good taste -- he picked out Ten as the best dancer in The Seventh Sense. I’d give him 3 stars, just because I think he could use a tiny bit of work on his dancing, but I think he’s great. (I mean, I'd give Jung Hyun 3 stars. I'd give my fella 3 million stars!)
The judges agree with me -- Jung Hyun gets 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐.
Blue-haired Park Han Bin was obviously a major presence in the performance. My fella thought his big facial expressions were too big and annoying, but I didn’t feel that way about it. I thought it suited the song and the style they were going for. Also, he was the center, so it made sense for him to be doing that. All in all, I think he deserved what the judges gave him: 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐. But I disagree with LipJ, who says that he carried the whole team on his back. He didn’t have to do that; everyone here pulled his own weight.
Lee Jeong Hyeon in the white short sleeved jacked did some really excellent rapping, and had fun and varied facial expressions. Honestly, I don’t see a reason not to give him 4 stars, but the judges do -- he gets 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐.
Park Min Seok in the leather jacket must have been the lead vocal here -- he does some pretty good singing, perfectly on key and with good support and a pleasant tune. Sometimes you can kind of see him mentally counting the steps as he dances, but on the whole he does a great job. I would have been stuck between 3 and 4 stars and probably would have gone with 3, but the judges take another puff on their crack pipe and give him 2 stars ⭐⭐.
God this whole performance gets better every time I watch it. If I had seen this exact performance on some music show, I’d be stanning this team. Yes, part of it is that this song is good, but I have to say that I’m not the world’s biggest ATEEZ fan. Their music is just not really my style, as skilled and talented as the guys are. I guess I’m just not that into pirates. So I had never heard this song before. And honestly, I like this version better than any live version that ATEEZ themselves did. They bring so much energy and enthusiasm to it.
The Space Council loves the performance, too.
Haruto turns to Anthonny and reminds him that Anthonny said that the G-team was better than the K-team…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The judges tell them that even though they must have practiced a ton, they looked like they were having fun on stage, and yeah, that’s the point.
39:40 Trainee Lee Hoe Taek
Final boss Hui comes out, and everyone tenses up.
The judges ask him why he came on this show, and he says:
“I had hundreds of reasons. The biggest reason was… I needed change.” He interviews that when he got back from my military service, and returned to PENTAGON, things had changed a lot. He says that it’s been difficult for his team to even work with who they wanted to, that they were rejected a lot. He thought to himself, “We’re no longer appealing enough to work with.” It made him sad. “It was hard to overcome the invisible wall,” he says, as Solji blinks back tears. “The only option for me now is Boys Planet.”
We get a short montage, set to soft piano music, of other trainees who have already debuted, starting with the immensely talented Lee Hwan Hee from Up10tion, who we see in an interview wearing his embroidered red jacket. Thanks, MNET. Be sure to show him talking about how sad he is while showing a brief clip of his audition, instead of just, you know, showing us his fucking audition. (Although, to be fair, his audition wasn't good so maybe it was kind.)
We also hear from Seowon from NINE.i, then Cha Woonggi who used to be in T01, then Seowon again, saying “I thought everything would work out if I debuted.”  The judges are sympathetic, knowing that the competition is stiff in the industry: “It’s like entering the eye of a needle now.”
Lee Dong Yeol, better known (maybe) as Xiao in Up10tion, says, “I can’t perform just because I want to… I questioned what was in the future for me. I think I’m more desperate because I debuted.”
Ok, quick note: Up10tion has some really good songs. Check out Spin Off. It’s so fun. Big and brassy and bright. I also like What If Love a lot. Give them a chance, ok?
Anyway, the judges tell “trainee Lee Hoe Taek” to perform, and he does.
Tumblr media
My take: He does his version of BlackPink’s Shut Down, which probably means something to him emotionally, and he shuts it down, and fuck anyone who says otherwise.
Why do we have this thing that everyone has to be an all-rounder? Hui is a top tier vocalist and he can write and produce songs. Why should he have to be the best dancer in the world, too? He isn’t the best dancer; he’s good enough to be a main vocal who dances next to the main dancer. Is D.O. from EXO a fantastic dancer? Is Chen? Nope. They dance well enough that they pull their weight, and then your eye goes to Kai, hamming it up in the center. Is Kai a fantastic singer? Nope. He has improved a ton, but he’s still not as good as most of his teammates and that’s OK. That’s why we have groups in k-pop. Jesus fuck.
So, I refuse to say, “Oh, his dancing is a tiny bit stiff, I hate this performance.” He MADE that the remix. He brought in the original violin piece that BP sampled, and used a larger clip of it. He sang and then layered his backup vocals. I bet he choreographed it himself because no way is his agency supporting him, and he’s probably too proud to ask for help. Then he sang, live, impeccably, while dancing well enough to entertain.
So fuck the judges for implying they might have given him 3 stars because his dancing “wasn’t good enough.” If you’re going to give some nearly-tone-deaf trainees 4 stars, then give Hui 5 stars. Fuck.
Tumblr media
48:00 Who won between K group or K group?
With that, they end the auditions and announce the winner. They hem and haw and drag it out of course, but K group won by a landslide.
Tumblr media
Out of 200 stars awarded, 119 went to K group, representing 59.5% of the vote, and making the ratio of stars awarded just about 3:2 in favor of K group. K Group is excited to get the benefit of being able to practice the Signal Test Song one day earlier, but I don’t know why that’s such a benefit, since it’s obviously the exact same song they used for every other male version of this show.
Click here for my take on the auditions that weren’t aired: Attention, Bloom Bloom, Freak, Gambler, Love Scenario, Lullaby, Maniac, UN Village, Veil, and Who. That’s a total of 18 trainees we didn’t see perform at all.
Click here for the second half of this recap of Ep 2, 49:34 to the end.
Thanks for reading! If you're enjoying the recaps, tell a friend! This kind of recap appeals to a specific kind of person so I'm not sure how people will find me, so word of mouth would help a lot. Thanks! <3

Boys Planet Episode 10: Recap/ Guide
Tumblr media
Hi there, fellow Star Creator! This post will be a general recap of Episode 10 of Boys Planet. I’ll dive into more in-depth discussion of each team and its performance in separate posts, which will be linked within when they’re ready. So, click “read more” and let’s go!
As usual, all my time stamps are from the Viki version.
Most of the time when people are talking, their name and current rank shows on screen. So, in case you’re wondering who’s saying what, here is a list of the current trainees in rank order, with their three mission songs to help jog your memory or make connections.

1:15 Checking In With the Boys
We start off with some “hang out with the boys time.”
They’re rehearsing until late in the night. They’re so tired they can barely move. They’re eating snacks, they’re putting blankets over each other. There’s a budding bromance between Hui and Gyuvin.  Yoo Seung Eon farts at Keita, which (1) indicates that Keita is, in fact, good friends with the other boys contrary to how he’s been edited in the past and (2) ensuring that Yoo Seung Eon will not make Top9, per my theory about smells. Jay and Yoon Jongwoo compare notes -- Jay is sitting on a bed that has Na Kamden’s nametag on it -- and Jongwoo says he feels like he’s growing from this. He sounds exhausted. We see many of the trainees practicing their weak spots -- Z-Bo is working on his lyrics, Tae Rae is dancing in the stairway. It’s actually pretty interesting insight into their states of mind.
3:38 Back to Showtime
Tumblr media
We return to the performance night. The judges are talking about how much better the trainees have gotten in general, and the editors use their conversation as a way to sort of review the first two performances of the night, which we say in the previous episode. They all agree that Supercharger did a great job. Their praise for En Garde seems focused mostly on Gunwook and Gyuvin.
5:41 Time for Some Filler
Star Master Key announces that before we can see more performances, we will be watching a video! Yay…?
The boys get sent somewhere for a secret mission, and someone comes out, already singing -- it’s Jo Kwon, the leader of 2AM and noted high heel enthusiast, I guess. If you’re not familiar with them, 2AM formed at the same time as 2PM. The idea was that 2AM would perform ballads and 2PM would do dance songs.  (You know at least one 2PM song -- “My House.”)  I don’t really know a lot about 2AM, and this is my first time “meeting” Jo Kwon, too.
Jo Kwon is there to reveal a surprise mission -- the trainees will pair up and perform a scene from musical theater, specifically, a scene from the musical of The Little Prince.
They have two special guests who will judge: Jung Dong Hwa and Nam WooJu, neither of who I recognized. The stakes are high -- the trainees will be given a rank out of 4 stars, and if they win 4 stars, they get a huge collection of cosmetics and promotion on social media. The best trainee of the day will get big posters of his face hanging in store windows all around Korea. That’s huge.
They pair up and have to hold hands with their partners, which is an opportunity for skinship, and for Matthew and Haruto to speak English, and this weird part where Hui is forced to choose between all the trainees who want to work with him, and he chooses Gyuvin. Relevant side note: Hui has actually acted in musical theater before, because he’s a 30 year old man who shouldn’t be on this show.
They see the scene that they’ll be performing, and it looks really difficult -- tons and tons and tons of lyrics to learn. You, dear reader, are going to learn a bit of Korean in this scene -- swibji ahna (sounds like they’re saying “ship-shee ahna”) -- which means “it’s not easy.” The performances begin at 20:45.
I’ll summarize the pairings and results below, because I don’t want to spend too long on this:
Yoo Seung Eon is with Lee Junghwan, and they both get 2 stars, mainly for not knowing the words. Wow, going last here is a huge advantage if you’re graded based on whether or not you’ve learned the lyrics.
Park Gunwook and Han Yujin also both get two stars, I think
Yoon Jongwoo and Keita- Jongwoo raps (looking at the lyrics) while Keita beatboxes, and they both get 1 star, I think
Ricky and Ollie - they get 0 stars, probably have lyrics problems
Sung Hanbin is with Zhang Hao, and girls worldwide actually explode watching them hold hands. They do great, so great I almost wonder if the show gave them the lyrics the day or two before, I mean, wow. They both get All Star
Hiroto and Takuto - Takuto is stuck with the Fox role, and really can’t sing it at all, and this is a form of torture for all of us.
Kim Ji Woong is with Kum Junhyeon - Junhyeon is stuck with the fox part and has trouble memorizing the lyrics, and they kind of go off the rails.
Hui is with Kim Gyuvin, and of course Hui seems like a professional because he IS one, and shouldn’t be on this show, and they both get All Star
We don’t see:
Haruto and Matthew
Park Hanbin and Seo Won
Na Kamden and Jay
Kim TaeRae and Chen Kuan Jui
Cha Woongki and Lee Seunghwan
Wang Zi Hao and Zhang Shuai Bo
It’s especially weird that we don’t see Kim TaeRae and CKJ because CKJ gets All Star. Also I wanted to see TaeRae doing things. I also especially wanted to see Woongki and Haruto. I get it that they can’t show the same scene 14 times in a row, but they could have put it online, and they didn’t, so screw you, MNET.
The winners get nice beauty products from Olive Young, which is like the Korean Sephora, a big deal kind of store with tons of locations. And Hui wins the top prize, which means he gets to have his photo up in stores all around the country. Fun fact: Olive Young already sells a few albums by Pentagon! So Hui’s photos have probably already been up in Olive Young stores! Because Hui shouldn’t be on this show! Sigh.
I swear, I’m a Pentagon fan and I like Hui. I just… you know. You get it, right?
30:00 Switch
Tumblr media
The boys come out and introduce themselves as Smushies, here to smush our hearts. Consider my heart fully smushed already, you cuties.
In the rehearsal footage, the focus is primarily on the trouble that TaeRae is having with the dancing. Yes, of course he is. He’s a main vocal. Main vocals traditionally need to work harder at dancing. Also, it’s hard to “dance powerfully” when hitting the B above middle C, a fact that the psychopath dance teacher seems completely unaware of, since the only things he knows about are (a) dancing and (b) completely destroying the emotional well being of others.
Park Hanbin takes over leadership from Na Kamden and teaches everyone how to dance.
The performance is super cute and cheery, with a set designed to look like a video game. Their bright pinks and greens are such a nice change from the all black landscape of kpop these days.Even if the song isn't your style, I think the performance is so cute that it deserves a watch. I actually prefer the dance practice to the stage performance, because I feel like you can see the dancing so much more and they’re actually really great. Also, I actually kind of like the song, if you listen to the official audio. The mix in the live version doesn't do the song justice.
Afterwards, we find out that Zhang Shuai Bo got the low score, with an obviously punitive 402 points. Poor Z-Bo -- I think he did a good job in the performance, and it’s a shame that the audience just… hates him. The high score is obviously Park Hanbin, with 741 points.
For a more detailed description of the rehearsal and performance, click here (it’ll be ready soon).
49:30 Say My Name
It’s time for the show to focus back on Soek Matthew for a while, and the whole Say My Name team. Well, we barely see Han Yujin but maybe that’s good. Keep that boy safe.
The gist of what’s going on is that Matthew still isn’t handling it well that his team wants him to be Sub Vocal 2 instead of Sub Vocal 1, which they think should go to Yoo Seung Eon. Matthew is really defensive and upset for a while, and makes up some bullshit about wanting to sing in English for his mom (I’m sorry, but it is complete bullshit), but in the end he realizes that the team is what matters most, and he pulls it together, and good for him. I don’t hate the guy or anything, to be clear. It’s just that when something is bullshit, it’s bullshit, you know?
In the end, they put on a cute performance with no mistakes. It’s not my kind of song, but it’s cute and they do a great job. Matthew is the standout in terms of stage presence, Seung Eon does a fantastic job with the vocals, and Hanbin wins the audience vote with 826 points. (We don’t find out who came in last.)
For a more detailed description of the rehearsal and performance, click here (it’ll be ready soon).
1:09:45 Over Me
The gist of what’s going on is that Zhang Hao isn’t the best leader because he’s trying too hard to be nice and listen to everyone, so the team is getting frustrated. Also, it seems that they’re a little embarrassed about how sexy the song is. Then Zhang Hao requests a meeting with Solji, who advises him to be firmer and more in control as a leader, which he does, and then things get better.
The performance goes fine, even if I think most of them hold back a little and don’t really pull off the sexy concept. I think Chen Kuan Jui is the only one who fully commits to what he’s doing, and I think that Jay’s vocals are a highlight when you’re listening to it.
Then audience puts Jay in last place with 485 votes, which upsets me really deeply, like, I have been stomping around my house swearing I’m going to just stop watching. But of course that’s not really true. Zhang Hao comes in first place with 852 points.
For a more detailed description of the rehearsal and performance, click here (it’ll be ready soonish).
1:33:00 The final results
Tumblr media
The boys gather to find out which team won the audience vote and will get the benefit. Heartbreakingly, Switch team thinks they have a chance to win, and hope to at least not come in last. But they come in last.
Tumblr media
When the Over Me team finds out they won, they’re, you know, exquisitely happy. Chen Kuan Jui pretty much breaks down.
Tumblr media
Ollie, Woongki, and Z-Bo congratulate him.
Remember how I said, over and over again, that people vote with their genitals? People vote for the thing that gives them sparkles in their pants? Well, Switch team was cute and charming and I personally liked it, even if no one else did, but it wasn’t sexy, so it came in dead last.
Supercharger was a tiny bit sexier, so it came in second. En Garde was trying to be sexy, and had Gyuvin and Gunwook, who people find sexy, so it came in third. Say My Name was “cute sexy”, like NCT’s Touch. But Over Me was overtly sexy, and won.
Remember, when I say “sexy”, I don’t necessarily mean that I find it sexy. I mean that it supposed to be sexy or is likely to be perceived as sexy.
Consider, what was the sexiest performance of the following lists:
Backdoor, Hot Sauce, Kill This Love, Love Me Right, Danger, and Burning Up
It was Backdoor, specifically the one with Kim JiWoong lifting up his shirt. That’s also the song that won the night.
Tomboy, Man in love, Limousine, and Not Spring?
Tomboy was the only one that was at all sexy. And it won.
Love Killa, Home, Feel Special, and Butterfly
It’s pretty obvious which one is the sexiest -- Love Killa -- which, not coincidentally, won.
Law, Zoom, Gang and Rush Hour
Law was definitely the sexiest of that group, and it won.
Before this battle started, I predicted that Over Me or Say My Name would win. I wasn’t totally sure if sexiness could overcome Sung Hanbin, Matthew, Kim JiWoong, and Han Yujin all in one group, but it did. That’s the power of sexiness.
I don’t know, my friends. I liked Switch best, I guess. Is it because it had Park Hanbin and Kim TaeRae and Keita? Maybe? But I genuinely like the song (the studio version) and it was so cute to see bright happy colors for ONCE. It was never going to win, of course.
I liked Over Me too, of course. And I’m glad they won, because those 200,000 benefit points will help ensure that Jay makes it into the finale.
I think at this stage of the show, the trainees are all tired and anxious, and it’s starting to show in their performances. I also think the audience has largely already made up their mind as to who they’re voting for.
I still like all these trainees as human beings, yes, even Matthew and Z-Bo, and just want all of them to be ok.
And that’s about it for this recap! We’re at the home stretch -- the finale is on April 20th!
I’ll see you in the next one! It’ll be another elimination episode, featuring hours and hours of filler! Whee!! (And those individual song posts are drafted and should be up soonish.)
🥰Thanks as always for reading! 🥰Right now, though you can't see, I'm holding up a handmade sign with your name on it! 🥰Yes, you! 🥰You! 🥰The one reading this! 🥰RIGHT NOW! 🥰

Boys Planet Episode 9, En Garde
Tumblr media
Hi! I already wrote a general/master post that covers episode 9, but this post will focus on the rehearsals and performance of the En Garde team. It’s all after the Read More! Thanks for being here, and ready, set, go!
As a reminder, here are the trainees on the En Garde team, with their episode 8 ranking and their previous songs, to help you remember who is who:
Kim Gyu Vin                   6   Love Me Right Love Killa Park Gunwook               9        Kill This Love       Tomboy Kum Jun Hyeon             10       Back Door             Gang Hui (Lee Hoe Taek)     11       Love Me Right Tomboy Lee Seung Hwan           21       Danger             Gang Hiroto                             28       Very Nice             Rush Hour
First Rehearsal Segment
At 35:50 in to Episode 9, we visit team En Garde, and spend about 7.5 minutes with them, most of which time is unnecessary. This team didn’t have to go through much trauma in The Great Reshuffling, since the only teammate who left (Park Hanbin) left voluntarily. Also, their members were left in a convenient distribution, one trainee per part…
Tumblr media
Clockwise from top left: Hiroto, Kum Junhyeon, Lee Seunghwan, Hui
… with one exception: both of the Killing Part members survived.
Kim Gyuvin and General Park Gunwook audition for who will get to keep the Killing Part. Kim Seunghwan throws his name in the hat as well. The remaining three trainees decide on who will keep the part. They annoyingly drag out the reveal for a while but finally say that they choose Gunwook.
For me, the constant auditioning for the part seems to make it worse and worse because Gunwook is now overdancing it to the point it doesn’t even look good, to my eyes anyway. I don’t want to feel like someone is combining their dancing with their boxing workout, you know? Maybe it’s just me. I actually like Seunghwan’s audition best, but I understand why the team wouldn’t give him the killing part, not at this stage of the game. And I still like Gunwook. I wonder things about him, like, if he were presented with several pizzas, how many pizzas would he eat? Not slices, pizzas. How many whole pizzas could he eat? I say… three. Like three full size pizzas. And drink like two 2-liter bottles of soda. And just be like, fine. Do it again tomorrow like NBD.
So yeah, once Gunwook is chosen, the trainees don’t have much else to do but practice. And Hui says something interesting. “I worried if things were going too well.” Why would you worry about that, Hui? He doesn’t explain why he’s worried. But I infer he means that if things go too well, then they won’t have a STORY for MNET to show.
Then there’s this kind of dumb bit where they prank Gunwook and tell him that they’ve actually decided to give the killing part to Sunghwan instead. It’s uncomfortable because it makes Sunghwan look like one of those who doesn’t accept a judgment and ask to audition again later on, which is so not the kind of person Sunghwan is. As you recall, Sunghwan is a peach.
Throughout the prank, Gunwook, to his credit, just sort of deals with it. He doesn’t get angry or storm out of the room. He just sort of breathes in and out and tries to accept it. Even as it sinks in, he’s sad, but not kicking things or screaming, just…. trying his best to accept it. Finally, his team makes it obvious that it’s just a prank, and Gunwook lies down on the floor in a combination of annoyance and relief. But throughout, he doesn’t ever whine or try to get people to change their minds or complain that it’s unfair. Aww, Gunwook is a good egg. His patience and fortitude really stand in stark relief compared to Matthew’s behavior.
(Ok team, turn out the lights, put on this hype track, and get close to whatever screen you’re reading this on. Let me whisper in your ear because I have a conspiracy theory. Mmmmaybe Gunwook knew the whole time that this was a prank and just went with it, to create good content. I’m not saying that he knew. I’m just saying, maybe. I’ll let all of you decide for yourselves.)
They give Gunwook back his sticker -- he gives it a little kiss -- and that’s the end of the segment.
1:41:57 D-Day
It’s time for the performance! The team comes up on stage to introduce themselves.
Tumblr media
We see Wumuti and co in the audience, holding up signs:
Tumblr media
They introduce themselves, and it’s like, Gyuvin’s soul is leaving his body as he tries to speak. I hate aegyo too, Gyuvin.
WHAT IS HUI WEARING AND WHY DOES THIS GARMENT EXIST?
Tumblr media
What kind of Loki-cosplay looking crap is this?
Ok, so it’s mixed media -- we got some matte polyester imitation worsted wool in the front, pleather on the shoulders and sleeves, and a single pleated rubber shoulder… device? Also it’s really a jacket that he’s wearing over a button up shirt and tie? And it has a weird belt thing? And shiny buttons that don’t look functional because it’s not really a jacket after all it’s just a thing you wear over a shirt even though it can’t be buttoned or unbuttoned? WHAT IS IT?
Tumblr media
And we can’t even blame the stylist noonas or anything. This is just Hui living his best life. Sigh.
I guess I’m the wrong person to ask because I don’t like faux military styling. I probably mentioned it when I was writing my recap for Law. At least with Law they were wearing sort of olive-khaki shades and not black, and they didn't have huge shoulder THINGS . All of these En Garde outfits are just generic “all-black vaguely military mix of fake worsted wool and leather with unnecessary belts and buttons and weird shoulder details” and I am really, really over them. They ride up as they’re performing and they’re weird and ugly.
I was talking about it with my fella and he theorized that maybe, since South Korea has been in an active war for a few generations now, that military-chic is more a part of their collective thought process than it is for most other people, and that’s a valid point, but I still HATE IT.  Half the boys did their Star Level test in some variation of this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But it seems to be a thing in K-pop, so what’cha gonna do?
Anyway, it’s time for a flashback.
We find out that, unlike the other teams who are already hard at work at the scheduled rehearsal start time, the whole En Garde team is at least 10 minutes late, some more like 30 minutes late, for their first rehearsal after the reshuffling. They get scolded by the producers, which is actually kind of interesting.
Tumblr media
Assume the fig leaf position for your scolding, please.
Later, they have a training/judgment session with the even more psycho of the two psycho dance teachers. They put on a performance that looks completely fine to me. I mean, we only see a few moments of it, but it seems like they know the choreo and the words, and they’re doing this kind of forgettable song to the best of their ability. But when they’re done, the psychopath dance teacher tells them that their performance was complete garbage. I watched it again, knowing that, and genuinely, I don’t know what I’m supposed to find wrong with it. It just sort of isn’t as good as he wanted it to be, and I don’t… know… what… is… wrong.
The only specific issue that he raises was that Kum Junhyeon didn’t organize his hand gestures. I assume that means that he failed to make up his own gestures to use for his part, or customize them -- he just followed the choreography. Hey, 19-year-old trainee vocalist (not dancer) Junhyeon, why didn’t you know you were supposed to ORGANIZE YOUR HAND GESTURES??
Side note: I actually really hate preplanned arm/hand gestures that are always the same -- like when Seungmin from Stray Kids does that one face cover in Backdoor, always at that same spot, like, switch it up a little? Like 5%? No? Ok. But I get it, they’re standard in the industry.
Anyway, the dance teacher tells them, “Your idleness strikes the sky.”
Afterward, good-guy Hyung Sunghwan tries to cheer up dongsaeng Gunwook, but uber-hyung Hui tells them all that they should be using this time to reflect on their bad behavior.
Tumblr media
Really internalize that scolding, guys. Let it get inside you and just squirm its way into your stomach lining. You want to make sure that you are shitting rivers by the end of the day. You want to not be able to sleep tonight because the words are just replaying in your head louder and louder and louder. That way you’ll definitely put on a better performance on D-day.
Then they all interview about how they want to win the performance on behalf of the eliminated trainees. That’s kind of… not… relevant. What, and Supercharger and Switch don’t want to win it on behalf of their eliminated trainees? Winning is for you, guys. It won’t help Lee Yedam.
We cut to later that night, when they’re rehearsing with renewed vigor.
Tumblr media
They begin tweaking small details to improve the choreo. Gunwook suggests dancing “dynamically,” and grabs his crotch. I guess that’s what dancing dynamically means. They end up rehearsing until 4am, which, again, is a great way to make sure you stay healthy and put on a good performance on D-day.
Then we hear a series of interviews from the boys, professing that they care deeply about the performance and are trying as hard as they can. And then it’s time for the performance.
Ok, before we get to the performance, I just want to say that something felt off and weird to me about this whole segment, like it was just manufactured drama. Is it possible that they held back a little in the performance for the judge so they’d get a good scolding? I don’t know. Or even more conspiracy theory level stuff, like was the judge even in on it? That seems coocoo but… also not coocoo?  If they did manufacture the drama, it was smart to do so, because most of the Star Creators vote based on the rehearsal footage, not the performance. If Gunwook, Gyuvin, little cousin, and the rest look self sufficient, they don’t need your vote, right?
Or maybe they really did get scolded for no real reason by the judge. That’s possible too. I really have no way to know.
The performance begins.
My take:
It’s kind of mentally helpful to differentiate between “flawless” and “perfect.” “Flawless” means that there are no flaws. There is nothing specifically wrong with it that could be considered an objective mistake. “Perfect” has a less specific meaning but the way we often use it, it means “exactly what I wanted.” For example, maybe a particular diamond is flawless (has no flaws) but is in a cut or style you don’t personally like, and thus isn’t perfect for you. Or like, someone makes an absolutely flawless carrot cake, but if you don’t like carrot cake, it’s not perfect for you!
So, for me, this performance is flawless, but it’s still not perfect, if you dig me?
I don’t want to yuck your yum. If you enjoyed this, then yay! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the performance and I’m glad that these performers found an appreciative audience. I like all these performers individually and I know they tried hard. I just can’t get with this performance as a whole. I’m sorry. 🙁
Part of it is the staging and the outfits. What is this staging? Hui has really thought himself into a corner again, hasn’t he? It’s like that awful version of Follow that he made for Kingdom, that assaulted your ears. I don’t even want to link it here because I dislike it. It’s like the sound of pain. I really respect Hui’s talent and work ethic and all that, but seriously, what is this staging? It’s some weird Cat Women Of The Moon shit, with columns and giant torches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Are they in space? But sometimes there’s lightening? Are they in ancient Greece, with those columns? Are they in medieval times, with those gargoyles? Are they in some futuristic war, in those outfits? What the fuck is going on????
I mean, I’m sure Hui has some long weird explanation of their characters or whatever he was thinking in those twenty minutes in the bathroom in episode 8, but… if you don’t demonstrate it to me immediately, what’s the point? Supercharger was like, “we’re tough motorcycle riding cool guys who are singing about how we’re cool and tough and full of super powered energy.” It’s silly but it’s fine, it all checks out. But for En Garde, there’s no coherence. It’s just absolutely random disparate elements, yet they’re not disparate enough for it to be an obvious attempt at that either. It just defies my brain.
My other issue is the way they performed it, though I will say right now that I don’t think it’s their fault. So let me explain. Part of it is, I think that they were all trying to “out-Gunwook” Gunwook and it made them all dance with too much power, so even the parts that should have been lighter, more sly, more sensual, were done as if they were in cardio class. Their outfits worked against them  -- it’s hard to look sensual or light when your shoulder pads are poking into your ears and your suit jacket is riding up into your rib cage. But a lot of it is their dancing intensity, and it’s a problem, because when the whole performance is powerful, there’s no up and down, there’s just onslaught for three minutes.
It’s like the difference between Law and Zoom. Law was three straight minutes of dancing, and Zoom had ups and downs, peaks and valleys. I can watch Zoom every day and not get sick of it. I can barely make it through watching Law all the way through at this point, I get so bored of it.
But as I said, the trainees really can’t be faulted for performing it this way. This is what they get praised for doing. Law beat Zoom at that performance, right? So why not emulate it for this performance?
One symbolic thing kind of worked for me -- the arm bands thing. The symbolism is obvious (we’re shedding these 3 star/4 star labels and moving on), and I think it meant something to them. But I think having the arm bands be the same color as the rest of the outfits, and not being that visible most of the time, diminished the impact and meaning of tearing them off at the end. No way could the audience see which arm bands had 3 and which had 4 stars. Even if there was a big jumbotron kind of thing, I still don’t think it would have read.
I wish, though, that they’d done more with that theme, because it fits the song so well. Consider the lyrics:
“En garde and pret [ ready], before the curtain starts, enjoy the most intense tension, Now it’s my show time… We don’t break, go ‘way, laugh like it’s nothing, an irreversible night, twist of fate… I can’t stop for you, ready set and go.”
The song seems to be about performing, about working hard and ultimately achieving a goal. Which is what they were doing. The dance teacher says that the finger moving in a circle bit at the beginning is meant to refer to the hands on a clock, the hours and hours spent rehearsing and working. If that’s what this song is about, why not lean into that? Why the weird staging?
Here's my thought: Have them start with big loose sweatpants on and have them wearing big name tags with their stars on them. Decorate the stage like it’s a rehearsal room. Then partway through have a red curtain drop down or something, and they can tear off their stars and do a quick change to show a stage outfit. Something like that, something to show a story about preparing for a stage and then being on it, if that’s what the song is about. It would have been autobiographical and fun, and the audience would have understood the references. More importantly, it would have connected with the performers, so they would have engaged fully in what they were presenting because they were telling their own story! Sigh. But instead we got this confusing mishmash.
I guess the biggest problem, though, is that I just don’t really dig the song itself, and I don’t know why. As one of you said in an ask, the song kind of sounds like a b-side or something. I dislike Supercharger, but in a weird way I think I prefer it to this song, because at least Supercharger sounds like something, and this sounds like the absence of a song. Ceci n'est pas une chanson. You know?
I’m sorry if my negative thoughts on the performance bummed you out. I’m extra sorry about it because I like Gunwook, Gyuvin, Hiroto, Hui, Junhyeon, and Sunghwan, really I do. I know they were doing their best and their best is very, very good.
Let’s see, the dancing was good. I thought they were super well synced -- it’s obvious that they worked hard to get that perfect. Also, I liked how the the choreography had levels, in the sense that their bodies were physically up high and down low at different times.
Tumblr media
All their vocals sounded super good -- I think they had MR* but you could hear live vocals over it and they were all great. Kum Junhyeon, Lee Sunghwan, and Hui’s vocals were all perfect. Nice job on that ad lib, Sunghwan! Hiroto’s rap sounded good too. And I always like Gunwook’s total commitment to performance.
*MR is a kpop term. It stands for “music recorded” and it refers to a background track that carries some of the burden of the vocals, given that they’re dancing while they’re performing. What you actually hear when kpop artists are performing “live” is usually a mixture of the MR and the live vocals. Some artists rely more than others on their MR -- one of the reasons I love Exo so much is that their microphones are ON when they perform (that’s from 6 years ago, they’re even better now!).
Gyuvin has just sort of not lived up to the performance quality that I saw in him in his star level test, and I blame those psychopath dance teachers who have squashed any spark of life out of this kid. He is the only one whose outfit flattered his body, though, so I kind of assumed he’ll win the fan vote the minute I saw him walk out on stage. In fact, I asked my fella to guess which one would win based solely on the outfits, and my fella picked Gyuvin too. I really hope he gets his spark back. I genuinely believe he’s having mental health issues being on this show.
Tumblr media
Seriously, Gyuvin’s cropped jacket and nipped in waist make him stand out in this group.
The Edit
The edit is kind, as I suspect all these edits will be. I’m sure they could have found some teeny mistake and played it 5x in a row, and they didn’t. They spliced in some reaction to make the whole thing look cooler and exciting, as per usual. The judges go completely nuts for it, throwing their clipboards around again, and the audience goes nuts too. That’s good!
Afterwards
Time for them to wait in the white room of doom to find out their numerical values on a scale of ??? to ???.
Tumblr media
The other trainees are sure that the high score will be really high, but it’s only 748 --good but not outstanding. And, as I predicted, it’s Gyuvin.
Tumblr media
I’ve talked about this before: if your outfit gives people sparkles in their pants, they are much more likely to vote for you. And his outfit flattered his body really well, while the rest of these attractive, fit guys ended up looking boxy and pointy.
We don’t see who came in last. That makes me think that it wasn’t Hiroto, because if it had been, they would have shown that. I wish they told us these votes! It’d be so interesting.
Gyuvin says, “All six of us on this team really put our heart and soul into this performance. We worked so hard on it. That’s why I think all the Star Creators thought positively about our performance.” And he smiles sweetly, but still looks like he’s going to cry.
Tumblr media
Seriously, I hope someone is checking in on this kid. I’m worried about the mental health of all 93 of them, but something about Gyuvin just really makes me put up my noona-antenna.
And that’s it for this recap! I hope you’re doing well.
Here’s something to cleanse the palette a little. Honestly I prefer this to their stage performance. I just wish it were in focus.
See you in the next one!
