“I added clauses to the contract so it will account for Mahiru being a Japanese citizen. We’re all in agreement with the payment schedule and Mahiru has provided the necessary documents and his banking information. That should be all and the only thing left is for everyone to sign.” Misono said and he handed a copy of the contract to Mahiru and Hyde.

“Of all the lawyers you had to choose, you had to pick the Alicein family. They’re the only firm that can rival our own lawyers. They drafted this new contract for you in a single night. Still upset about that five percent of the onsen sales you couldn’t pry away from us, Misono?” Hyde chuckled even as Misono’s eyes narrowed into a glare. He turned to Mahiru and asked: “Did you pick them for their reputation? Or did you look through the directory, chose randomly and got lucky? The latter sounds much more interesting.”

“You two shouldn’t fight in front of Mahiru. He’s a customer and it’s unprofessional.” Lily said to stop their argument. Mahiru glanced between Misono and Hyde and he wondered about the tension between the Servamp and the Alicein. He knew it wasn’t his place to ask them. He watched Lily casually lean against Misono’s chair and he thought the two were friendly at least.

“There’s nothing wrong with fun banter between friends.” Hyde said and signed the contract. He placed a cheque and a key card on the papers before he slid it back across the table to Mahiru. “Kuro talked to me about your situation a little bit. You need a place to stay and an advance on your prize money. Since it will take a few days to process your bank information, we’ll give you this cheque first. We even arranged for someone to help you move everything into your new home.”

“I’m grateful for the help but you didn’t need to make one of your employees carry my things. The discounted room is more than enough for me.” Mahiru insisted. He liked to live modestly and the only expensive items he had were his cameras. He could fit everything he owned into three suitcases. Hyde’s offer surprised him and he wondered if all jackpot winners were given the same luxuries by the casino.

“Do you have a car?” Hyde asked and Mahiru silently shook his head. He waved away Mahiru’s concerns before he could voice them. “Use our chauffeur service. If it’s the money you’re worried about, this is another perk of the VIP program. I already called the driver and he should be here in a few minutes to pick you up.”

“If the person is already waiting for me outside, it would be a bigger waste of time to refuse.” Mahiru relented with a sigh. “Do you also want a ride back to your office, Misono? You can join us.”

“Thanks for the offer but I already have plans with Tetsu.” Misono said politely and shook his head. His eyes became cold when he addressed Hyde. “I hope you won’t make a habit of forcing these gifts and services on my client.”

They heard the door open behind them and Mahiru turned towards the sound. Kuro walked through the doorway and Mahiru stepped towards him. He wanted to take the opportunity to thank him for his kindness the previous night. More than giving him the winning dollar and the new home, Mahiru was grateful that he spoke with him.

Mahiru noticed how Kuro leisurely twirled a keychain around his finger. Hyde had mentioned that a driver who would help him move into the hotel. The possibility made him more excited than it should have and he told himself not to make assumptions. The Servamps owned the casino so he wouldn’t be a chauffeur. “Good morning, Kuro. Are you here to speak with your brother? Our meeting just ended.”

“That means you can go help Mahiru pack.” Hyde quickly added before his brother could speak. Confusion passed over Kuro’s face but he didn’t voice the questions he must’ve had.

“Kuro, can we stop by the mall?” Mahiru was grateful that he offered to drive him but he didn’t want to take too much of his time. So, he added: “I want to buy some camera equipment for work. I shouldn’t take more than an hour. In return, I’ll cook you a meal. It’s been too long since I’ve cooked. What do you want to eat?”

“I like ramen.” He said and he nodded in return. They exchanged goodbyes and then Mahiru left the room with Misono. Once the door closed between them, Kuro turned to Hyde. “You texted me about an emergency. I didn’t know that you were still in your meeting with Mahiru. It looked like everything went well. There was no reason for you to call me on my day off.”

“Mahiru needs a car to bring his luggage to the casino and I volunteered you for the job. You better run after your four-leaf clover or else you’ll leave him waiting.” Hyde told him and gestured for him to leave with a wave of his hand. While he was laughing good-naturedly, Kuro’s eyes narrowed with suspicion. “What’s with that face, Nii-san? Don’t you want to make our customer happy?”

“What are you planning, Hyde?” Kuro asked him bluntly. He knew that it was best to be direct with his brother. “You’re an adult and you shouldn’t be playing pranks on people. Mahiru’s a customer and Hugh will yell at you for involving him in your silly games.”

“He was the one who told me about Mahiru. He likes to gossip about the employees’ love life and he jumped at the first moment you showed interest in someone.” Hyde brushed away Kuro’s subtle threat with a confident smile. He leaned back in his chair and tapped the contract that Mahiru signed. “People would say he’s lucky to win seven million dollars but we know that a jackpot comes with its own trouble. Forgotten friends will come crawling to him for money. You don’t know who to trust. Then, there are the reporters.”

“Our casino has a policy to not send the winner’s name to the newspapers. Reporters are troublesome for everyone.” Kuro trusted that his brother wouldn’t speak with the press about the large jackpot. However, he was all too aware of how reporters could discover Mahiru’s story even if the casino tried to protect him. Why did Kuro feel so protective of Mahiru?

Kuro let out a soft curse and he ran his hand through his hair. “The only time you and Hugh get along is to mess with me. Can’t deal. I’m going to help Mahiru move into the hotel but don’t expect anything to happen between us. He might not be interested in guys or a relationship.”

“You should ask him that while you’re carrying his bag.” Hyde suggested. Kuro didn’t respond and merely walked after Mahiru.

“I didn’t know cameras could be so heavy. Didn’t technology advance for all of these things to fit onto your phone?” Kuro and Mahiru walked down the hall to his hotel room. While his tone was dry, there was a subtle smirk on his lips that told Mahiru that he was joking. He chuckled along with him. Kuro carried his luggage and bags for him while Mahiru held the grocery bags. He admired his strength and watched him in the corner of his eyes.

“My room number is on the first floor so I thought it wouldn’t take us twenty minutes to walk all the way here. It’s great exercise though.” Mahiru laughed softly. His voice was beautiful to Kuro and it held less tension compared to the night they met. He overheard his conversation with his uncle so he could deduce his situation. He hoped the benefits of the jackpot would outweigh the complications that sudden fame it would give Mahiru.

They reached his room and Mahiru took out the key card from his pocket. This was the first time he was able to see his new home. He preferred simple things so he asked the hotel if he could stay in a suite rather than a condo. He glanced around the room as he entered the lounge and he was glad that they followed his request. The money he won was a large help but he didn’t plan to change himself.

The suite had a single room with a corner set aside for the kitchen. While it was simple, it was far more than he had at the motel he stayed in. Mahiru immediately walked to the kitchen and he set down the groceries. “You can put my luggage next to the bed, Kuro. I’ll unpack later. For now, I want to start cooking right away. I promised to cook ramen for you and it takes a while to make the noodles from scratch. Sit down and wait.”

“You don’t need to give me a reward for doing my job. Though, I’m never going to refuse a free meal.” Kuro placed the boxes on the ground. He rubbed his tired shoulders and he sat at a short table. His brothers gave him the job to drive Mahiru because they wanted to tease him. He didn’t want to play along with their matchmaking plan. However, he didn’t see anything wrong with sharing one meal with Mahiru and getting to know him.

Mahiru removed a dinnerware set from its box. He would only be staying in Las Vegas for the next two months so he bought plain plates. He placed them in the sink and then turned his focus onto the groceries. As he arranged the ingredients on the table, he said to Kuro: “Can you wash the dishes while I start prepping the food? It’ll be quicker that way. The ramens will be worth it too.”

“This wasn’t the free meal I was expecting if I had to give you manual labour.” Kuro joked sarcastically. He stood in front of the kitchen and washed the dishes like he told him. “You have a lot of confidence in your cooking. Are you a cook?”

“I’m a photographer but I’ve loved cooking ever since I was a kid. I taught myself twenty different recipes by the time I was sixteen,” Mahiru boasted. His grin was filled with excitement as he began to cook. Between his lack of money and how he couldn’t cook in the motel, he wasn’t able to make a homecooked meal. Most would find it strange that he missed chores like washing dishes and cooking.

As they worked, they started a casual conversation. Kuro asked: “What made you move from Japan to Las Vegas? Did you get a job offer? You said you were a photographer. Your workplace needs to pay their employees better if you need to win a jackpot to move out of your motel.”

“I came here to help a friend.” Mahiru’s answer confused Kuro. If he had a friend in the city, they could help him with rent. He didn’t know whether he should ask Mahiru about his friend from how a shadow passed through his brown eyes. “You don’t need to worry about me and money, especially since you gave me a dollar that won me seven million. I’m a freelance photographer so work can be inconsistent but I get by well enough. Can I ask about your work? I thought you were a security guard but you own this casino.”

“My siblings own it, actually. How they bought the casino is a long story.” Kuro turned off the water and he faced Mahiru. “Our father died when I was still in high school and we struggled with money. “Wait, that means you have seven siblings! I can’t begin to imagine what that’s like.” He exclaimed and his eyes widened. Kuro had to chuckle at his reaction. When he heard his laugh, Mahiru’s back straightened and he said, “Is that a challenge? I will cook you and your family a delicious meal next week. Maybe we can also invite Misono since he seemed close to Lily and your family.”

“You can read people well. Not many people would think that after they saw how Hyde poked at Misono. Misono and Lily have been friends since they were in preschool. He found himself more curious about the type of person Mahiru was.

“It was the way they laughed together.” Mahiru smiled. He hadn’t been able to make new friends after Kyoya stole his cameras. He needed to work everyday and he rarely had time for himself. Hopefully, Kuro could be his friend.

Mahiru loved taking photographs of landscapes and memorable events. Most of the jobs he took as a photographer were for weddings and other celebrations. He found something new that he liked though. Kuro sat in a circle of cats and the sight was endearing to him. He couldn’t help but point his camera at them and capture the moment. The flash caused Kuro to look up from the cat and their eyes met through the lens.

“Is there something on my face, Mahiru?” Kuro asked and he became more curious after he saw how he blushed at his innocent question. He stood and a few cats clung to his body. Careful not to step on the cats on the ground, he made his way to Mahiru. He sat on the ground next to him and he placed a cat on his lap. “Can I see the pictures you took so far?”

“Of course. I’m proud of the photographs I took but a few of them need to be touched up. I want to correct the hues. Once I get home, I can edit them and send them to Lily.” Mahiru handed him the camera and took the white cat in trade. The casino was planning an event where customers could stay in the hotel with their pets. They asked Mahiru to take promotional pictures of animals and he happily agreed. A month had passed and he grew close with the family—especially with Kuro.

The casino sectioned off a corner of the lobby for them to work and they were alone. Mahiru created a small backdrop and carefully positioned the cats. It was fun watching him photograph the cats. His brows would furrow together in concentration whenever he took a picture. The proud grin Mahiru made after he captured the photo he wanted was worth more than seven million dollars. It was easy to see how passionate Mahiru was about photography.

As Kuro scrolled through the photos, Mahiru played with the white cat. He waved his fingers over its nose and chuckled when it tried to grab his hand like a toy. His hand froze when he felt Kuro’s warm fingers in his brown hair. Mahiru almost turned his head but he stopped himself. He didn’t want Kuro to stop stroking his hair. The tender gesture surprised him yet he quickly relaxed into the moment and his touch.

“You have cat fur all over you.” Kuro said and he flicked white fur onto the ground. Mahiru was a little disappointed that he only touched him to remove the cat fur. He turned his head and a soft gasp escaped him when he found Kuro leaning close to him. “Your face is red, Mahiru? Are you getting a cold?”

He started to answer but they were interrupted by someone walking towards them. They had a sign to warn customers not to enter the photoshoot space. Kuro assumed that he didn’t see the sign and he stood to ask him to leave. Mahiru suddenly gripped his sleeve to keep him beside him. He had been blushing before but now his face was pale. A wave of protectiveness washed over Kuro. He didn’t know who the man was but he wouldn’t let him hurt Mahiru.

Mahiru bit his lip and then he asked the stranger: “Kyoya, why are you here?”
